Lumberjack Days to keep the small town tradition alive
BY NOELLE OLSON EDITOR
The 89th Lumberjack Days will return to Stillwater from July 13 to July 16. Lumberjack Days is the longest running festival in Minnesota and is organized by the The Locals 501c3.
“We got the contract from the city way back in 2014,” said Paul Creager, founding board member of the Locals. “We started working on that contract in 2013 and we’re coming up on 10 years now. This will be the ninth time we’ve produced the event.”
This year’s musical lineup includes — The Suburbs, Your Smith, Kiss the Tiger, Monica LaPlante, Humbird, Ruben, The Sunken Lands and more. “The whole weekend is full of great music with mostly rock, blues and pop music,” Creager said.
“Our Friday night headliner is Your Smith led by an amazing performer, Caroline Smith, and she and her husband recently opened a bar in downtown Stillwater called Howard’s,” Creager said. “And on Saturday night, we have a very famous band from Minnesota called The Suburbs.”
The festivities kick off with a boat cruise on the St. Croix River, followed by the Downhill Derby Car awards. Throughout the weekend, guests can enjoy live music, lumberjack shows and a medallion hunt.
There are also activities for kids, food vendors and a beer garden for adults.
Meet the Monster Athletics is hosting a 5K and 10K race that starts at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, at Pioneer Park. The scenic course is a loop around Stillwater and finishes near downtown in the heart of all the Lumberjack Days action. Each registration will include a T-shirt, refreshments after the run and a free beer (21+) at the Lumberjack Days beer tent.
The Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce Foundation will be hosting the Lumberjack Days parade in partnership with the Locals. The parade will start at a new time this year at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 16.
“It’s easy for towns to kind of lose some of it’s traditions just through a perpetual change and there’s a lot of things that change in Stillwater but the event is something we want to be a reminder of this town’s history,” Creager said.

New cafe brings neighborhood feel to Stillwater
BY SEBASTIAN STUDIER PRESS INTERN
From freshly brewed coffee, to pastries, to a breakfast menu, to a lunch menu featuring delicious flatbreads, and even cocktails, newly opened You and Me Cafe in Stillwater has you covered.
Co-owners and couple Dariush and Sarah Moslemi are no strangers to owning a business together with the twosome owning a number of other restaurants, as well as three yoga studios across the metro and a candle manufacturing company called Carpe Noctem Candle Co. with locations in Stillwater and Las Vegas.
“We’ve made our career out of forms of art, and we’ve really loved the creativity of it,” Dariush said.
Tucked into the corner of Churchill Street and Fourth Street, You and Me Cafe is a unique form of art for the couple because of the location and atmosphere existent in the building.
“It is different than our other restaurants and businesses, those are really high traffic and you’ve got a lot more tourists,” Dariush said. “This is really specifically neighborhoodoriented.”
You and Me Cafe was formerly known as Chilkoot Cafe under its former owners and the Moslemis would visit with their children, loving the cafe and the location. In 2018, the location changed owners while the couple was busy with their other restaurants before Dariush got a call in December saying that the previous tenants were leaving, and asked if the couple wanted it.
“Absolutely,” Dariush remembers responding.
What then followed was an extremely rapid turnaround with the couple signing the lease in December, starting construction in January and flipping the location, updating the spot to become cozier but also more modern, before opening You and Me Cafe in the spring.
The cafe features multiple menus and a wide array of foods and beverages including a pastry menu that is always changing with a variety of sweet and savory scones that are wildly popular.
Numerous different coffee beverages are available, including a new drink that Dariush said is becoming extremely popular very fast called Japanese iced coffee.
Behind the delicious coffee is a programmable pour over machine called the “Poursteady” that Dariush says makes coffees “perfect and unbelievably good.” The cafe owns the only “Poursteady” machine in the state of Minnesota and utilizes it to
make high-quality drinks.
Carly Fitzenberger is an employee at the cafe who has been in the drink industry for 10 years and the drink menu is entirely from her own personal recipes. Carly loves using the “Poursteady” and loves the creativity that comes with new drink ideas and collaboration with her coworkers.
“The heart and soul of the place is the staff, the people who are here every day making coffee,” Fitzenberger said. Moving to breakfast, the cafe offers all-day breakfast and popular breakfast items include corned beef hash and biscuits and gravy, along with a dish unique to this location called “egg smoochy,” which is a garlic potato whip with a poached egg on top served with toast.
The momentum does not stop once you reach the lunch menu, where you can find large portions in sandwiches and soups, but is headlined by the delicious and popular flatbreads such as “jalapeno popper,” and “walnut beet pesto” cooked in a specialized pizza oven.
“Jamming all these things into one place was really complex, but it works,” Dariush said.
The Moslemi couple continues to use their creativity by adding additions to the cafe, including selling their own branded coffee that can be bought and brewed at home as well as creating an online ordering system that allows customers to order from their phone and pick up their order quickly.
Dariush wanted to create the “cheers” of the cafe world, where people can come in and be comfortable and cozy while having the staff remember their faces.
The cafe is unique because there are “regulars” that will come in five to seven days a week, allowing the staff to remember their name and their order. Although Dariush appreciates the neighborhood culture that this forms, he still emphasizes the welcoming nature of the cafe that exists for anyone who walks in.
Sarah echoes the thoughts of her husband and thinks that there is a neighborhood atmosphere in the cafe but also recognizes the openness of the location.
“Our vibe is community, it’s passion,” said Sarah. “Our esthetics are intimate but airy, open and inviting.”
Walking through the doors, customers are greeted openly by staff and can find themselves a place to work against the bar facing the window with outlets and USB connectors or can find themselves a table to enjoy a meal with loved ones.
Sarah is highly appreciative of her staff that “knows the difference
between coffee you can get anywhere and a cup of coffee that changes the trajectory of your day.”
A family has been created at You and Me Cafe and Sarah loves being a part of that family.
“Within its operation, the best part is that I love being a part of a staff that becomes like a family, neighbors that become friends and watching the patrons use this space for themselves,” Sarah said. “I love the opportunity to make someone’s day.”
You and Me Cafe is located at 826
Fourth St. South in Stillwater. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, visit www. youandmecafemn.com/.

Happy anniversary
My husband and I just celebrated our eighth wedding anniversary. I can’t believe it has been eight years.
My husband Patrick and I met through a mutual friend while I was attending the University of Minnesota Duluth. One of my classmates was actually staying with Patrick at the time and I met him in passing many times while hanging out with her. (My husband is originally from Esko.)
Shannon’s Shenanigans
Shannon Granholm
Let me introduce myself
Iam Sebastian Studier, a summer intern at Press Publications.
I graduated from Forest Lake Area High School in 2021 and just completed my junior year at Bethel University, where I am majoring in English education and minoring in journalism. At Bethel, I have explored my journalistic interests by serving as the sports reporter for the student newspaper, the Clarion, in addition to completing a spring semester internship in writing with Bethel’s athletic department where I wrote game recaps as well as feature stories. I also play on Bethel’s club hockey team and serve as a BUILD student mentor, tutoring and serving as a mentor for students with intellectual disabilities.
Rewinding a bit, I was born in Maplewood and spent the majority of my early childhood life in Cottage Grove from age zero to 5. I attended my first day of kindergarten at Columbus Elementary, and my family shortly thereafter moved to Columbus, where I still reside today. Growing up, my days were filled with school of course, but sports, and then more sports. My elementary school days were spent playing a full plate of baseball, basketball, hockey, and lacrosse before I attended Century Junior High and eventually, Forest Lake High School where I narrowed down my sports interest to lacrosse alone and played through my senior year.
This summer, I will be growing as a journalist and professional at Press Publications, working a full-time internship through the week, coming into the office Monday through Friday while spending my weekends ideally outdoors, avoiding mosquitoes, and spending time with the people that matter to me.
My internship at Press Publications will last through the three months of summer and I will be working a full 40 hours per week. In my first few days in the office, I have been impressed with both the friendliness and interconnectedness that exists in the building. I have seen many different smiling faces and have already received valuable advice from multiple different voices. From the news department where I will be working, to the sales department, to the production department, and beyond, it feels like a team rather than a collection of individuals. Growing up competing as a member of multiple sports teams, I know that a successful team is one that features unique individuals with individual strengths but works together towards a common goal utilizing teamwork. I can sense this team atmosphere already at Press Publications.
I’ve always had a passion and drive to write. Writing always came easily to me, and I always found that I could say what I couldn’t put into words aloud into writing. I remember my parents always telling me before I went to college to minor in something you’re passionate about, and that’s what I did. Although I aspire to become a high school English teacher, I truly believe that my journalistic experience will weave itself into my future career in some fashion, whether that be teaching journalism classes to high school students while advising a student lead newspaper, or simply continuing to write freelance in my spare time. Even though I don’t see myself working as a real-life journalist in the future, I still look forward to the invaluable experience and opportunities that my summer spent in this newsroom will create for me, whether those experiences contribute to educating the next generation of journalists, or even pull me into a fullon career change, because you just never know, after all.

It didn’t take long before we started dating. We were technically only dating for one month before we got engaged. People thought we were crazy, but as cliché as it may sound, when you know you know. We spent two years saving up for and planning our wedding and on June 27, 2015 we said “I do” at Crystal Lake Golf Course in Lakeville. It was close to 90 degrees that day.
Since that day we have been through a lot together. I often say 2015 was both the best year and worst year of my life. That December, right before Christmas, my dad passed away. At a time when we were supposed to be happy newlyweds with not a care in the world, my whole world fell apart. But Patrick stood by my side, as he always has, and got me through a really tough time. Throughout the years we have been through job changes and many moves. We have lived in Carlton, West Concord, Oakdale and now Hugo.
We have also been through some scary times with our pups, Frosty and Twinkie. When Frosty was just 8 months old, she was diagnosed with Lyme disease. Thankfully with treatment she was able to get rid of it.
When Twinkie was just 8 months old, we discovered she had a genetic heart defect. If she didn’t have surgery, the doctors predicted she would only live about a year longer. Thankfully, the surgery went well.
Years later when she was 5, another emergency surfaced that required surgery. One of her eyes was not producing any tears. We tried a variety of different eye drops but none of them seemed to do the trick. One day she developed an ulcer on her eye and we had to rush her to the emergency hospital so her eye did not rupture. They had to remove her eye but we are so thankful she is still with us.
We have had lots of happy times too, from our mini moon in Okoboji, Iowa to our honey moon in Destin, Florida, to our baby moon Lake City, Minnesota. We have also enjoyed many trips up north as well as attending car shows with my VW bus or Patrick’s hot rod.
Now eight years into our marriage we have welcomed our first child, Royce.
ºFor our anniversary this year, the three of us are going on a dinner cruise with Stillwater River Boats.

Commissioners approved an application from the Bayport American Legion Post 491 to offer pull tabs during the Washington County Fair in Baytown Township Aug. 2-Aug. 4. PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS
Washington County warns of scam
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office continues to field multiple reports of residents receiving calls from someone claiming to be a Washington County sergeant. In some cases, the scammer has even “spoofed” the real dispatch phone number to appear as if the call is coming from the Washington County Sheriff’s office, and they are using real Washington County deputies’ names to seem more convincing.
Residents are reminded that no law enforcement agency, including the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, will ever ask for money or gift cards over the phone. While most agencies will not contact you by phone if you have a warrant, none will demand money or personal information in an attempt to clear the warrant.
The names and circumstances of these scam calls may change, but remember to never give out any personal or financial information over the phone. If a call seems suspicious, hang up and dial 911.
If you are concerned you may have a warrant, you can visit www.wcso.info and click the “warrant search” tab.

What’s ‘too hot’ for animals left outside in the summer?
When Animal Humane Society (AHS) agents get calls from the public about animal cruelty, it’s mostly related to the weather. Every year, its agents are flooded with calls about dogs and cats outdoors during the hot summer months.
When it comes to hot weather animal reports, it’s important to gather specific information about the animal to help our humane agents conduct the most thorough investigation.
Here’s some things you should consider:
• What breed is the animal, and how old is it? Short-nosed have an increased risk for breathing issues and heat stroke when it’s hot, due to their facial structure.
• How is the animal acting? Is it active? Is it lethargic or panting or drooling excessively?
Lethargy and excessive panting or drooling may be a sign of dehydration or
heat stroke.
• Does the animal have a water bowl within reach in the shade, and is there water in the bowl?
• Outside animals that are subject to hot weather conditions that affect their health or welfare must have access to appropriate shelter.
• Minnesota does not have tethering laws, so an
animal may be tied out. However, animals that are tied out must be free from entanglement or injury from the collar or tie out cord/chain.
Lastly, animals should never be left in unoccupied vehicles when adverse weather conditions could affect their health or welfare.
If you find an animal
in conditions that appear questionable, please contact your animal control division or AHS humane agents for assistance by visiting www. animalhumanesociety. org/resource/reportinganimal-cruelty-minnesota

Scandia founders implement cutting-edge technology
Frank Lake’s mercantile was a center of community life in Scandia in the 1890s and early 1900s. Located just across the road from Elim Lutheran church, it offered the latest fashions as well as shiny new farm equipment.
When Lake built a barn just behind his store, it was not simply to stable his delivery horses. He added a windmill to pull water from deep underground and an elevated water tankhouse. Wooden pipes supplied his business, home and neighbors with fresh water. A horse-drawn wagon delivered water to outlying homes and farms. Scandia businesses flourished.
Lake also sold the famous Aermotor windmill, which had taken the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair by storm, soon dotting the Midwest landscape and transforming life on small family farms. While crucial, the age of the windmill was relatively brief. By the 1930s, rural electrification offered a modern alternative for pumping water. But windmills are more than just a symbol of a bygone era. They represent a spark of human ingenuity that employed wind and water to make an entire way of life possible. Such is the deeper story of Scandia’s Water Tower Barn, the last structure of its kind in Minnesota.
Lake’s windmill was gone by 1940, but water still flows from the barn’s well to local customers. When it appeared that the barn itself might be demolished, Scandia citizens disassembled and stored it in hopes of rebuilding it with a new purpose and home.

July is... U.V. SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH
Picnics, outdoor sports, the pool, the beach, relaxing with a drink in your hand and the breeze in your hair — sound cool? It sure is! What isn’t cool is skin and eye damage caused by excessive exposure to the sun’s U.V. rays.
The sun emits radiation in the form of Ultraviolet or U.V. light, which is classified into three types: U.V.A., U.V.B., and U.V.C. The ozone layer protects the Earth’s stratosphere and blocks the most damaging U.V.C. light, but U.V.B. and U.V.A. light pass through it. U.V.C. radiation can come from artificial sources such as sunlamps or tanning beds.
Radiation from U.V. light is invisible but is always present during the day even when you can’t see or feel the sun. These rays can be harmful to our skin and eyes. Aside from wrinkles and sunburn, exposure is associated with the development of skin cancer. Our eyes can be affected by cataracts, cornea damage, and vision loss if left unprotected in the long term.
The sun is at its peak between 10 am to 4 pm. Head indoors or under shade during these hours. If you stay outside longer for work or play, sunscreen with a high S.P.F. of at least 30, a broadbrimmed hat, sunglasses, and breath-
able clothing that covers you up can offer the most protection. U.V. rays can pass through clouds. They also reflect off surfaces like sand, snow, cement, and water. That’s why sun protection is important in any season, all year round.
Children need special attention to keep them protected from the sun. They usually spend more time outdoors and burn more easily. Sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 is the minimum recommended by the Amer-
ican Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)— although the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) suggests using SPF 30 or higher. “Choose at least SPF 30 with broad-spectrum protection, which means it blocks both UVA and UVB rays,” advises Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. No additional benefit has been shown for SPFs higher than 50. Mineral sunscreens, which contain
active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are the most highly recommended for children as they are less irritating for sensitive skin. They also minimize the risk of harmful chemical exposure, as these minerals sit on top of the skin to block the sun’s rays rather than being absorbed into the skin.
While most sunscreen ingredients are either considered generally safe or are undergoing further research, you should try to avoid sunscreens with the ingredient oxybenzone. This chemical may have hormonal properties, says the AAP.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t recommend sunscreen for infants under six months of age. Infants should have their skin covered by hats and loose, long-sleeved clothing or be kept out of the sun whenever possible, such as under an umbrella or shady tree, says the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Babies younger than six months old should be kept out of direct sunlight. They should also wear hats and protective clothing. Sunscreen used on babies should only be put on small areas of exposed skin.
