Welcome to the Whitehorse
SENIORS FESTIVAL 2024
Whitehorse City Council is proud to present this year’s Seniors Festival, which will take place from 1 to 31 October 2024.
The theme for this year’s festival – Explore. Engage. Evolve. – encourages residents to stay curious and connected by exploring new activities, meeting new people, and changing how we think of ageing. Across Whitehorse we are lucky to have many vibrant and varied community groups that have contributed to this year’s program, offering an array of activities and events.
I congratulate and thank the remarkable clubs and groups that have embraced the spirit and participated in the festival. These offerings provide an invaluable opportunity for everyone to embark on new adventures or rekindle their passions. Our festival launches with the grand opening event to be held at the Nunawading Hub, hosted by U3A Nunawading on Sunday 6 October. Here you will be treated to live music, dance, crafts and more. Throughout the program, you will find more than 160 Council and community-run events, which are either free or low cost, including film screenings, dance classes, craft classes, health and wellbeing sessions, guided walks, karaoke and more. Don’t miss our grand finale, Yacht Rock Revival, which will be showcased in our state-of-the-art theatre, The Round.
I hope you embrace this opportunity to enjoy our Seniors Festival and the variety on offer.

Photography with Wilhelm Philipp
Tuesday 24 September, 11am – 12.30pm
Bring your smart phone or camera for a tour of the historic Box Hill Town Hall with Wilhelm Philipp, and get a sneak peek of its hidden spaces for creative photography inspiration.
For the past 5 years local emerging artist Wilhelm Philipp has focused his keen photographic lens on documenting the urban identity of Box Hill, taking photographs almost daily to record change and celebrate community.
The resulting body of work features in his exhibition at Whitehorse Artspace, Wilhelm Philipp – I Wish We Knew These Were The Good Times When We Were In Them.
Wilhelm has always been drawn to a documentary style of photography – an interest that began as a child when he was fascinated by the images that filled the newspapers and magazines that he would devour at home. His interest in photography was cemented when Wilhelm’s Mum gave him her prized Conica 35mm camera, and he began documenting the people and places that filled his days.
This exhibition reveals the artist’s celebration of light and his skilful use of the golden glow that often accompanies the late afternoon hours in Box Hill. The same light that drew the famed Box Hill Impressionists to paint the area surrounding Gardiners Creek in the late 19th century casts its warm glow in Wilhelm’s photography.
This body of work combines portraits of members from the vibrant and diverse community of Box Hill, with street scenes that reflect the shifting built environment of the suburb. He hopes viewers walk away with a sense of pride in the community and an appreciation of the present moment in the midst of change.
Wilhelm also shares his experience as a practising visual artist with secondary school students in Whitehorse, visiting schools to give professional development artist talks in the hope of inspiring the next generation of budding artists.
