Councillor Bill Bennett said more than 250 presents were donated to needy families just in time for Christmas morning.

“Each year we are overwhelmed by the number of generous people in Whitehorse who take the time to purchase and donate a gift for families who are less fortunate,” said Councillor Bennett. VOLUNTEER FOR MEALS ON WHEELS

ouncil is looking for committed, caring, enthusiastic, flexible and positive people with exceptional communication skills to help deliver meals on wheels and monitor the wellbeing of meal recipients.

Whitehorse Mayor Councillor Andrew Davenport said that in Whitehorse, volunteers deliver more than 1200 meals each week. "Volunteers can apply to be either a 'driver' or a 'jockey', with two hour shifts available between 10.30am and 12.30pm." "There is also an opportunity for people to sign up as relief volunteers, to help out during those times the regular volunteers are unavailable." Councillor Davenport said that as well as making a real difference in the daily lives of elderly people and those with a disability, volunteering can have a positive impact on your wellbeing. "Research shows that volunteers are happier and healthier," said Cr Davenport. "Volunteering also provides a valuable social connection to someone who might otherwise not have family or friends close by." 51.12% Recycling: The amount of waste diverted from landfill to organics and recycling facilities in Whitehorse was 51.12% while the metro average* was 45.87%

SATURDAY 17 FEBRUARY, 11AM-11PM With 80,000 people in attendance each year, the Chinese New Year Festival in Box Hill is the biggest annual event in the City of Whitehorse.

Central Box Hill comes alive with people, colour, movement and sound. The festival showcases wonderful music, singing and dancing from our local community, as well as games, rides, firecracker displays and market stalls selling souvenirs and delicious food.

Like Santa, Whitehorse City Council, encourages residents to get on their bike and explore the great paths we have in our region – but do it safely!

Local residents come along in droves as do many visitors from across Melbourne. It’s a wonderful way to showcase Box Hill and all that it has to offer to both regular and new visitors.

join global fiesta 2018 Global Fiesta is Council’s Harmony Day event, celebrating the diverse cultural history, traditions, food and art of everyone who calls Australia home. The event will be held in the beautiful Box Hill Gardens on Sunday 18 March from 12 noon to 4pm. Whitehorse City Council is looking for local culturally diverse community and social groups and not-for-profit organisations to be part of the 2018 Whitehorse Global Fiesta. Expressions of interest are due by Friday 16 February. By holding a stall, community groups can showcase what they do, increase membership numbers and raise awareness. Local cultural groups are also invited to perform on stage and share their unique music and dancing styles. How to get involved Complete an Expression of Interest (EOI) form by Friday 16 February. There is plenty you can do to keep your cool when the temperature rises this summer. Whitehorse News presents key advice here to help you, your family and your home survive the heat and the humidity.

Preparing your home for the summer heat • Use curtains and blinds to block out the sun. Sunlight entering the home through windows is the biggest culprit for heating the house.

• When using an air conditioner, keep windows and doors closed to avoid wasting energy. Minimise the area to be cooled by closing doors.

• Install external blinds on your north and west facing windows. Awnings, roller shutters and shade sails are far better at keeping a home cool than indoor curtains and blinds. As a quick fix, try inexpensive shade cloth.

• Set your air conditioner between 24°C and 26°C – every degree lower will increase running costs by around 10 per cent. • A fan will generally keep you comfortable during warmer nights and will cost far less to run.

• Select the most comfortable room in your home on either the south or east side. Pre-cool it before the peak of the summer heat kicks in. • Consider operating your washing machine and dishwasher during offpeak hours to reduce demand when electricity is most needed.

Pets get hot too!

• Provide cool, shady areas throughout the garden and in the home. If you can, bring pets indoors on hot days. • Leave multiple bowls of water where your pet can easily access them, in case one is knocked over. You can also leave a bowl of ice for your pet, which will melt throughout the day.

• Turn the air conditioner off when the outside temperature drops and open doors and windows to let the cool air in. More information www.sustainability.vic.gov.au

• Pets with pink noses, not much fur on their ears and white skin under their fur are more susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer, so apply a special animal sunscreen to exposed areas. • Put a toddler pool in the shade and fill it with water for your pet to sit in

What's happening at Aqualink this summer? When the summer heat hits, our thoughts immediately turn to finding the closest body of cool water to plunge into. Luckily for Whitehorse residents, Aqualink Box Hill and Nunawading are enticingly close. Bring the kids down to Aqualink during the school holidays for the Chill Zone activities, free with the cost of entry. At Aqualink Nunawading, you can have a blast on the small inflatable from 12.30pm, the giant inflatable from 1.15pm and the Tarzan rope from 2.15pm to 3pm. At Aqualink Box Hill, the Chill Zone activities run from 12.30pm-4pm. After your swim, grab an icypole or icecream and spread out on the gorgeous lawns at Aqualink. If you're looking for some 'me time' over the school holidays, the Aqualink creches will reopen from 8 January. The kids will love the water play activities at the creche and can have their own summer fun with the toy BBQ and play ice cream stall. To sharpen up on swimming skills, the Aqualink swim schools are running intensive swimming holiday programs, and you can stay and play after the lesson.

Keeping cool • Drink plenty of water or other cool, nonalcoholic fluids, even if you’re not thirsty. • Reduce activity and avoid exercise in hot weather. If activity is unavoidable, schedule it for the coolest part of the day and rest often. • Whenever possible, stay indoors or in the shade. • If you don’t have air conditioning, visit an air conditioned shopping centre or library.

Rebates now available for solar battery storage units

hitehorse residents can apply for a $200 rebate after installing a solar battery storage unit.

Solar storage batteries store power generated by rooftop solar panels. The stored energy can then be drawn on at a later stage, such as night or on the weekend when more members of the household are home. The $200 rebate can be applied for once the solar battery storage unit has been installed, however the unit must be commercially purchased and installed (rather than a DIY project). This rebate is in addition to the existing rebate of $154 per solar panel system.

• Eat small frequent meals, especially cold food such as salad. • Wear lightcoloured, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibres like cotton and linen. • Place wet towels on your body, put your feet in cold water or take cool (not cold) showers. • Never leave children, older people or pets in cars. • Keep tabs on neighbours, friends and relatives, especially the elderly and those who live alone. For urgent help if you or someone you know is suffering from heat-related illness or stress call 000 and ask for an ambulance.

Parent Information Forums are back in 2018! B

That’s where Council’s popular Parenting Information Forums can help educate and solve some of the puzzles presented by the youngest members of our families. Whitehorse Mayor Councillor Andrew Davenport said that the program reflects Council’s belief that effective parenting influences a child’s lifelong development and overall wellbeing. “The Parent Information Forum program will once again tackle topics we know local parents want covered,” said Cr Davenport. “Guest speakers are carefully selected to reflect a diverse range of parenting approaches with sensitivity to different cultures and communities.

Forums in 2018 will explore: • transition from kindergarten to primary school • parenting in a digital world • promoting body safety and protective behaviours in children • positive and effective ways of managing behaviour • making sense of adolescents and their risk-taking behaviour • supporting children with their peer relationships and bullying • managing VCE stress • surviving high school Forums will continue to be offered for just a $2 donation, with these donations returned to the community each year.

ARE YOU A YOUNG PERSON INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING?

Places are still available for both the Whitehorse Youth Representative Committee (WYRC) and FReeZa Committee’s Flying Pig Events. Both committees offer the perfect chance to develop a range of skills and get valuable experience to add to a resume.

Whitehorse Creative Youth Community (cyc) lets you share and view creative work such as music, art, design, film and literature.

The WYRC is a committee focusing on youth leadership, youth issues, being a voice for young people, and communicating to Council and the local community.

You can also keep up-to-date with youth events and find information about support and youth services.

Training is provided in areas such as leadership and event management, and members have the chance to learn about Council and the local Whitehorse community. The WYRC gets involved in a range of annual events including Spring Festival and National Youth Week.

THE CHANTOOZIES Popular Australian girl group The Chantoozies appeared on every imaginable entertainment program in the country during the 80s and 90s, selling over 300,000 records, going Platinum and Gold. The fabulous Wendy Stapleton is back as MC and will introduce the Australian Women’s Choir who will sing the national anthem. A spectacular 10 minute fireworks display will cap off this wonderful night.

ALEX PAPPS Alex is currently one of Play School’s most loved presenters, having appeared on the award winning educational children’s TV show since 2005. Put your bins out at the right time. Place your bins out no earlier than 24 hours before your scheduled collection, preferably the night before, and bring them back in no later than 24 hours after they’ve been emptied.

I also commend our local RSL branch for their ongoing education programs in our local schools. Eastern Health At the end of each year I have the opportunity to attend an annual Eastern Health briefing detailing the results achieved over the previous financial year. A few fast facts you may find interesting: Eastern Health covers six municipalities and serves almost 774,000 people at 21 locations, 11 of which provide 24-hour care. They have 9437 staff supported by 860 volunteers and a budget of more $1.008 billion per year.

What a marvellous time of year to live in the Elgar Ward. The days are long, the grass in our parks is lush, the smell of BBQs is in the air, the school year is over and the cricket season is in full swing. It has been a hectic and thoroughly enjoyable time out and about in our community. A few highlights included the Rotary Art Show at the Town Hall, attending the Box Hill Model Boat Club at Elgar Park for a diabetes information session with Associate Professor Neale Cohen from the Baker Institute. Representing Elgar Ward at the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Box Hill RSL Cenotaph and the function afterwards was a great honour, and it was a delight to catch up with people who live locally that I served with in the Army. Other highlights included Whitehorse Carols, Council’s Bike It safe bike riding skills day, the opening of the new Pavilion at Elgar

Park, local T20 Cricket matches and several school fairs. Local Challenges There are of course the challenges I am tackling with vigour: how the proposed North East Link widening of the Eastern Freeway potentially impacts on our parks concerns me and the potential that Yarra Valley Water might seek to compulsorily acquire Council land for a sewerage treatment plant (or what they call a recycled water plant) is also a genuine worry. Please know Council is seeking further information on this proposal and will keep you informed about the area that we love. As you can see (right), my two lovely pooches were dressed for the occasion. Not sure they enjoyed the dress up, but they did enjoy the treats that went with the Christmas celebrations.

Council Budget

Some of the functions I attended prior to Christmas were Women in Whitehorse, the Vermont Garden Club, International Volunteers Day and the Whitehorse Business Group.

This year’s budget preparations are progressing well. By the time this column goes to print the Minister will have announced the rate cap for the next financial year. Keep an eye out for the information session/s that are to be held and come along to find out what is proposed. We are holding the community sessions earlier this year to allow the community more time to lodge their submissions.

Carols by Candlelight was an amazing evening. An enormous amount of work goes on behind the scenes and I congratulate all involved. Congratulations also to Bungalook Nursery on celebrating their 30th anniversary and to Vermont South Cricket Club for achieving 40 years. I also attended the opening of the Elgar Park North Pavilion. The linear, undulating roofline of this pavilion is really quite spectacular. Another enjoyable event was the launch of the Whitehorse Centre Theatre program for 2018. Delighted to see so many tickets sold on the night.

Australia Day Concert and Fireworks Don’t forget the wonderful Australia Day celebrations to be held at the Civic Centre on Friday 26 January. Bring your blanket or chair and come along with family and friends to enjoy the evening. Please, if you live in the area,

Happy New Year I hope you all had an enjoyable break over the Christmas and New Year period and are looking forward to 2018. New Facilities The latter half of 2017 saw the completion of several exciting recreational facilities in Whitehorse.

In October the new and improved Box Hill South Skate Park was opened and in November the new pavilion at Elgar Park was completed. If you get the opportunity during the summer months you should check out the skate park at Box Hill South (corner of Canterbury and Middleborough Rd). It is amazing to see some of the skills that the young (and not so young) skaters have developed.

EERN provides household goods for the most underprivileged in our local community. It works with some 140 agencies whose clients are in dire need. Nunawading Community Hub Update An Information Day at the hub’s site, on the grounds of the former Nunawading Primary School, was held recently. Purchased for $6 million in 2015, the hub will house all the groups currently located at Silver Grove in Nunawading. Construction is planned to commence mid 2018 with completion around late 2019. The Whitehorse Film Society Season Begins With A Roar! The Whitehorse Film Society has been screening interesting and thought-provoking LEVEL movies for ONE several decades. It first began in Blackburn Score! in 1958 with the film The Sentimental Bloke.

The films are screened in the Willis Room in the Whitehorse Civic Centre, 379 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading. Current Film Society members will be in attendance to welcome you.

New and existing members will be warmly welcomed to a special season of 20 movies from around the world throughout 2018.

Yearly memberships are $55 or $50 for pensioners and students. A free supper is served after the movie.

The season starts on 3 February with the film Lion and will be followed by A Man Called Ove on 17 February.

Other membership benefits include being able to borrow from the society’s DVD library, a detailed monthly newsletter and opportunities to discuss movies in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The Society meets on the first and third Saturdays of each month, with the film starting at 7.45pm.

Weaving stories into Creative Vessels S

imple materials have been turned into amazing works of art for the Creative Vessels exhibition at Box Hill Community Arts Centre (BHCAC) this month. Weaving students from BHCAC have used natural fibres from wool to wood and grasses to craft their intricate, beautiful and functional baskets, with a story behind each one. BHCAC tutor Monika Poray led the exhibiting students in their classes as they learnt the techniques involved in creating the objects. The tutor’s own artistic pursuits explore the geometries in nature and express them in an aesthetic language. She enjoys the mysteries in nature and finds how things grow very fascinating. Monika is inspired by Leonard Da Vinci’s drawings and his geometric findings, as well as artists such as Andy Goldsworthy and Chris Drury. Monika will work with aspiring artists again this year, taking weaving classes in the January school holidays and during term time. BHCAC Weaving Students’ Exhibition: Creative Vessels 16-28 January. his month we speak to Stuart Robertson, Venue Manager at Council’s Morack Golf Course, about what he loves most about working at Morack.

What do you like best about your job? Interacting with our customers. We’ve got really great clubs here and the staff get along really well with the members. What makes Morack stand out as a venue? This is a unique venue because it offers a course and driving range together, and there are only a handful of Victorian venues that do that. We are so close to houses and CityLink, but you would never know that when you’re on the course. It feels like you’re in the country. We have rabbits, birds and other wildlife, and that environment really makes Morack stand out from other courses. What do you like about summer at the course? It’s such a busy environment and there’s always so much going on. There are so many people enjoying the summer break and heading to Morack. I really like being busy! What are some memorable experiences? When one lady began here, she was very shy and didn’t know anything about golf. She joined one of the ladies' clubs and in five years was captain of the club! One of our junior golfers, Corey Wakeman, has played here since he was around the age of five and now plays golf for Victoria.

What are you looking forward to at Morack? I'm looking forward to further improvements to the golf course over the next few years, including a the implementation of the Morack Golf Course Strategy. Has your game improved since working here? I play off a handicap of five. My game hasn’t improved since I was 18 unfortunately, so I am a social golfer!
