October brings lots of excitement and energy to Whitehorse and you’re invited! Please join us as we celebrate the grand opening of The Round, our new performing arts centre on Friday 13 October. We’re very proud of The Round – Council’s $78m commitment to provide a creative community that is vibrant, diverse and engaged through arts, culture and language. See pages 8-9 for a sneak peek inside. With spring in air, we’re looking forward to hosting the Whitehorse Spring Festival on Sunday 15 October. Themed ‘Let’s Play’, this is a fun and free event with lots of kids activities, musical performances and more than 80 stalls to showcase what our wonderful community has to offer. Also, go on a tour of The Round and don’t miss out on

the Whitehorse News photobooth for your chance to be featured in next month’s issue. I was very impressed by three passionate Grade 4 students from Parkmore Primary School in Forest Hill. They presented to Council about how they’re challenging their whole school and the broader community to take the Wrapper Free October pledge – highlighting the damage that soft plastics have on the environment. They’ve created brochures about how to build wrapper-free lunchboxes which you can pick-up from the Civic Centre. Well done to Seb, Emily and Jake. Please get in touch via our Your Say page if you have ideas about the types of projects and services that should be considered in the 2024/25 budget. See page 5 for more information. I look forward to seeing you at Spring Festival.

Advocating for Whitehorse The Suburban Rail Loop Precincts Discussion Paper has recently been released for community comment. It outlines the high-level ambitions and priorities for the areas surrounding where the SRL stations will be built by the Victorian Government in Box Hill and Burwood. Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) is interested in your feedback and we encourage people who live, work and socialise in these areas to also have your say on what you think

the future infrastructure and services should look like. Council will make a submission and advocate for great outcomes for residents and visitors, based on community feedback over the past few years. L Details about how you can have your say can be found at engage.vic.gov.au/ precincts-discussion-paper Submissions close on 24 October 2023.

Council venues and initiatives nominated for awards We’re delighted to have three of our venues and partnerships recognised through recent awards nominations. Congratulations to all involved in the following projects:

“This is a third-party application which is the preference of our customers. We work closely with Snap Send Solve to ensure our staff can respond to customer and community requests through this app.”

Snap Send Solve

Nunawading Community Hub The Nunawading Community Hub has been shortlisted in the ‘Community Centres’ category of the 2023 International Architectual Awards, organised by the Chicago Athenaeum’s Museum of Architecture and Design.

The team established a hugely successful partnership with Snap Send Solve – a smartphone app which helps residents report any issues quickly and directly to Council for further action.

“Our tech team have embraced the community support for Snap Send Solve,” Council’s Executive Manager of Transformation, Siobhan Sullivan said.

The exhibition was supported by a Whitehorse Community Grant and opened earlier in the year as part of the National Heritage Festival. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on 10 October.

Council’s Transformation team was Highly Commended in the ‘Collaboration and Partnership’ category of the Municipal Association of Victoria’s Technology Awards.

The honour follows on from Whitehorse Council winning Snap Send Solve’s ‘Snapper’s Choice’ award last year, as voted by the community.

The society has been nominated in the ‘Volunteer-run Project of the Year’ category for its exhibition From Then Until Now: Exploring the Stories of the Whitehorse Area.

Mark Ackland, David Tillig and Siobhan Sullivan accept Council’s award at the MAV Technology Awards.

Schwerkolt Cottage The Whitehorse Historical Society’s permanent exhibition inside Council’s Schwerkolt Cottage has been shortlisted for the 2023 Victorian Museum and Galleries Awards.

Other Community Centres in Vietnam, China and South Korea have also been named as finalists. The hub, located on the site of the old Nunawading Primary School, opened in September 2020 after roughly two years of construction. It was designed by Melbourne architects fjcstudio, who incorporated the refurbished heritage school building into the centre’s design. The hub has also achieved a 5 Star Green Star Rating for its environmentally-friendly elements including use of solar panels to generate energy and rainwater harvesting.

Working for Whitehorse Meet Ashleigh Boyce, Council’s Administration and Events Officer. She plays a pivotal role in organising some of our biggest public events, including this month’s massive Spring Festival. Ashleigh joined Council at the start of 2023 after working mainly in arts and live events for more than a decade. She has a strong desire to contribute to events specifically designed to enrich and engage the local community. “Whitehorse was a natural fit for me due to its incredibly diverse community and its beautiful parks and facilities,” she said. “I saw this as a great opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the community through my work.”

“It’s always a good idea to check our website if you’re uncertain about the requirements for your event.” The other part of her position is with Council’s Festivals team, helping create engaging and fun events for the Whitehorse community, all of which are free to attend. Some of them include this month’s Spring Festival, December’s Whitehorse Carols and January’s Australia Day concert. “Community events offer numerous advantages, such as fostering unity, celebrating our heritage, providing leisure activities, supporting local businesses and even offering educational opportunities,” she said.

Ashleigh has a wide range of responsibilities “They ultimately enhance our community’s in her role, which includes organising overall quality of life. I’m proud to be part community events and filming permits. of a team that strengthens community “Many people might not be aware that connections and crafts unforgettable even hosting a party in one of Whitehorse’s moments for our residents.” beautiful parks may require a permit,” she said.

Students’ plastic-free crusade impresses Councillors Three Parkmore Primary School students have been educating their schoolmates – and Whitehorse Councillors – about the damaging impact of soft plastics and challenging them to do better. Grade 4 students Seb, Emily and Jake (pictured) developed the Soft Plastics Environmental Earth Defense (SPEED) project group as part of their studies. As they started researching, they uncovered the alarming impact soft plastics can have on the environment, biodiversity, wildlife and humanity. They also uncovered how much soft plastic was in their schoolmates’ lunchboxes. They discovered students were bringing 1300 pieces to school a month and 15,600 pieces a year, all of which was going into landfill.

This led the trio to develop a challenge for the entire school – to go plastic and wrapperfree for the month of October. To help their schoolmates and their families, they created brochures detailing how to make wrapper-free lunchboxes, along with recipes and helpful tips to avoid the purchase of single-use plastics. The trio presented to Councillors at their meeting on 11 September, asking for Council’s help to promote their work and encourage other schools to also take the challenge. They received a huge round of applause from the gallery and Mayor Mark Lane promised to put their brochures on display, which you can pick up from Council’s Civic Centre in Nunawading. L Join Parkmore Primary School and take the Wrapper Free October pledge! For more information email SPEED at speedsoftplastics@gmail.com

Artist takes flight with debut exhibition An artist who participates in various all-abilities classes at Box Hill Community Arts Centre is drawing awareness to a critically endangered bird species in her debut solo exhibition. Fiona Taylor, who enjoys printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and photography is shining a light on the Eastern Curlew in her exhibition Critically Endangered. The exhibition features bird-themed pottery and printmaking artworks she has compiled over the years. Punk/Alt Rock trio Volt Jolt won Whitehorse’s 2023 Battle of the Bands. Pictures: Maya Noyman

Volt Jolt triumph in Battle Of The Bands Following on from the All Ages Tour concert in May, Whitehorse’s FreeZa group Flying Pig Events held another successful event, the Whitehorse Battle of the Bands contest on 16 September. Eight local acts competed at Box Hill TAFE in the annual competition, cheered on by a crowd of more than 150 fans. Indie band Von Uan won a door prize for bringing the most supporters. Volt Jolt was voted by the judges as the winner of this year’s contest and awarded the first prize of studio time at Burwood’s Bradshaw Music Productions, which they can possibly use to record songs. Mongeese won second prize of practice time at Burwood’s Hydra Rehearsal Studios, while third prize of $200 was awarded to Offswitch.

The Flying Pigs Events team would like to thank all the acts who took part in this year’s contest and the fans who created a great atmosphere on the night. Come see us at Spring Festival!

Taylor has loved birds from a young age and has previously done various art and fundraising projects on migratory birds. “Like many others, birds symbolise freedom to me,” she said. “I want the visitors to the exhibition to leave with an appreciation and some understanding of how vulnerable migratory shorebird species are, and how they need our help in protecting their habitats when they return here annually from the Arctic.”

You can meet the Flying Pigs Events team, find out more about what they do, and enjoy the sounds of more local bands at the Youth Stage during Spring Festival on 15 October. The team has also started recruitment for 2024 – if you would like to be part of the team, contact Jac for more information at jacqueline.piper@whitehorse.vic.gov.au or call 0408 356 997. Special connections being formed at Strathdon House’s Repair Café In a world where technology often separates us, there are still places that bring people together in unexpected and heartwarming ways. Whitehorse’s new healthAbility Repair Café at Strathdon House in Forest Hill has already proven to be a place for special moments and connections, despite only opening in early August. On the opening day, a resident visited the café looking to get a much-loved pair of jeans fixed. The resident worked in IT, and as she chatted with the repairer, she said she felt a bit embarrassed that she didn’t know how to fix such a minor problem. The repairer told her not to be embarrassed, as there were lots of other handy skills she didn’t know. In particular, the repairer said she wasn’t great at using Microsoft Excel, and that she really needed a spreadsheet for her business. This sprung out to the resident with her IT background, and the duo realised they had complementary skills. What began as a simple request to repair a pair of jeans soon evolved into a meaningful exchange where two individuals could help each other.

This story serves as a testament to the transformative potential of this space. The healthAbility Repair Café is more than just about fixing things – it’s a platform that facilitates the exchange of knowledge, skills and stories and unites people from diverse backgrounds who might not otherwise cross paths. Get along to the next Repair Café event at Strathdon House on Saturday 14 October and get your items fixed – you never know what connections you might make. L The Repair Café is held on the second Saturday of every month from 10am-2pm. For more information visit www.healthability.org.au/services/repair-cafe

Our first shows in the venue have been a great success, and we are eagerly looking forward to this month’s official Opening Night concert and celebration on Friday 13 October. This $78m project represents a significant step forward in the City of Whitehorse’s artistic evolution. It is also the new cornerstone of Council’s commitment to provide for a creative community that is vibrant, diverse and engaged through our arts, culture and heritage. Here’s your ultimate guide to the fantastic spaces we have on offer at The Round.

THE ROUND BAR Featuring a lush design with elegant seating options overlooking beautiful parkland, your pre-show or interval visit to The Round Bar is sure to be a memorable experience.   Indulge in a variety of award-winning wines, premium sparkling beverages, local craft beers, non-alcoholic options and an exclusive cocktail menu, seasonally curated by bar specialists. On weekdays, The Round Bar transforms into a café during the day, serving baristamade coffee, toasties and fresh pastries with a smile.

CREATIVE SPACES The Round is also home to new Creative Spaces – two studios with a dedicated entrance, allowing them to function independently of the whole venue. The studios feature wooden sprung floors, natural daylight, access to change facilities and all-gender bathrooms. Our Creative Spaces will be ideal for dance, rehearsals, workshops, small events and classes of all varieties.

STUDIO

SOUNDSHELL

The 203-seat Studio has a retractable seating bank, allowing for a range of different configurations from theatre style to cabaret or cocktail.

The most unique aspect of The Round is our Soundshell, which is an extension of the Studio stage. The Soundshell opens from the Studio, linking state-of-the-art sound, lighting and modern backof-house facilities to the beauty of our parkland amphitheatre.

The Studio features a large upstage window which can provide bright natural light for events. The space can also be fully blacked out, making it ideal for movie screenings, comedy, music, award nights, dance rehearsals and smallscale theatre productions. The Studio is also cleverly designed to open to the outdoor Soundshell and amphitheatre, allowing it to be the stage for Whitehorse’s wonderful festival season.

This is an outdoor stage unlike any other in Melbourne’s East, offering enhanced protection and security from weather while providing performers and staff full access to our backstage facilities. The Soundshell will create a fantastic audience experience during outdoor events and festivals – and you’ll be able to enjoy it for the first time at this month’s Spring Festival on 15 October!

OPENING NIGHT Be part of history and join us for the Opening Night concert at The Round on 13 October, starring Gary Pinto and Lucy Durack. All ticket holders get to walk the red carpet and access to a post-show cocktail party.

There are three major award categories: ▪ Citizen of the Year ▪ Young Citizen of the Year ▪ Community Achievement Award

Spring has sprung and much is happening

Heritage Week - what an amazing array of events held in September

At Morton Park, Council has created a small area behind the scoreboard to store the goal posts during cricket season. Council is removing the goal posts at some grounds to see if this better allows the grass to recover.

On the 16 and 17 September Strathdon Homestead ran some activities on the theme “From orchard to market”. Strathdon showcased how fruit from the then working orchard was transported to the market place.

I want to acknowledge the Blackburn Football Club “back to back” (2022 and 2023) Grand final wins for the Men’s Development and Under 19 teams. It was great to see the passionate club support and lots of red and black on the day at Bayswater Oval. The player skills were most impressive. As a club with a strong focus and enduring commitment to also developing women in Australian Rules Football, congratulations go to Mia Chadwick who won the League Best and Fairest for Women’s Division 2.

The festival season is just around the corner and of course this year the season is extra-exciting with the opening of the new performing arts centre: “The Round”. They held a fantastic season launch with the Death of a Salesman an amazing first up show. If you missed out, visit the website for what’s on offer. Well done to our team(s) for their efforts in making this a great start to the new facility.

As we move to the many summer sports across all age ranges, I wish all teams much success and most importantly much enjoyment for all club members and visitors. A playspace upgrade is planned at Slater Reserve during 2024 and residents received information late last month. Signage at the site will encourage residents to use Council’s “Your Say” page to share their thoughts for the design. Our performing arts centre, “The Round”, will be opened officially in October and we will have Spring Festival back at Nunawading on 15th October 2023. Come along and enjoy the theme “Let’s Play”. Look forward to seeing you there.

Citizenship ceremonies remain a highlight of being Mayor with many excited people committing to Australia and its people. Welcome to all those who have become new citizens, I look forward to the ongoing involvement you have within our community. I have been advocating for council to have a more regular pavement cleaning regimen at Brentford Square and have taken some council officers down to see why! As a result we should already see some pavement cleaning being done. I have spent some time visiting local business in recent months to say “Hi” and to hear some of their concerns and how council may be able to help. Council’s Business Development team are always ready to chat with businesses about economic development initiatives and if you just need some help or direction within your business, please do not hesitate to reach out. Take Care and I hope to see you around Mahoneys Ward and don’t forget to say Hi!.

Budget Consultation 23-24

Expansion of Positive Ageing Services

Council’s budget process for 23-24 is kicking off, commencing with community engagement. We want to hear what matters to you, what areas you would like Council to focus on and any project ideas. As always, I welcome input from Sparks Ward residents and community members, your insights will assist us in shaping our budget moving forward.

I’m pleased to support expanding Council’s Positive Ageing service so Council services and facilities are developed with the priorities, interests and needs of older residents in mind. If you would like to contribute to the design of the expanded service, please complete a survey at yoursay.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/ positive-ageing by 30 November 2023.

Please stay tuned via the Council’s website for further information in relation to community engagement sessions and YourSay feedback opportunities. Suburban Rail Loop The Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) has released a Precincts Discussion Paper, seeking community input in regards to precinct planning and design – which includes the Box Hill and Burwood project areas. Council will be making its own submission to emphasise our local vision and to ensure that both locations are great places to live, work, study, visit and play. You can view the Paper and make a submission via this link: engage.vic.gov. au/project/precincts-discussion-paper/ page/box-hill Council is also undertaking community consultation in relation to public open space outcomes for Box Hill. The survey is open until 10 October 2023. We welcome your feedback, visit: yoursay.whitehorse.vic. gov.au/srl Event Highlights The Spring season always draws a number of wonderful and notable events, including the Moon Festival in Box Hill, Whitehorse Excellence in Business Awards and Council’s Spring Festival. I also look forward to the official Opening of The Round Whitehorse’s new performing arts and function centre - later this month.

Creative Whitehorse – the website to see “what’s on” Many residents have told me Council information is challenging to navigate and information on activities could be better presented. In response,Council has collated all activities into one website: www.creativewhitehorse.vic.gov.au It’s a great digital hub for all things arts and culture, especially during school holidays. Neighbourhood Houses in Whitehorse Wattle Ward has two neighbourhood houses, Bennettswood Neighbourhood House and Burwood Neighbourhood House. They aim to bring people together to learn, connect and participate in varied and interesting activities. Bennettswood Neighbourhood House is at 7 Greenwood St Burwood, and Burwood Neighbourhood House is at 1 Church St Burwood. Please visit them to see what activities may suit you. Budget 2024/2025 I’m pleased to report there has been a change to the budget process, which now allows for budget submissions to be made through your local Councillor at any time during the year. If you identify an activity that Council should be involved in or Council waste which should be eliminated, please get in touch with me.

Some of my most enjoyable moments over the past couple of weeks, have been the attendance at the Australian Local Government Women’s Association Bursary Awards. Congratulations to this year’s winner, Sophie Paterson from Glen Eira Council. I recently attended the Heatherdale Community Action Group 20th Birthday celebrations which coincided with their AGM. Founding member & former politician, Phil Barresi was on hand with Nick McGowan MP to congratulate HCAG by presenting a birthday cake complete with candles. It was also my pleasure to join members of the Vermont South Club to kick off their pennant season. Great fun to roll a bowl down the green with John Mullahy MP, Michael Sukkar MP and son, Leo with many other members of the club. Leo, at a very young age showed great promise and impressed all. It was my pleasure to join with the congregation of Uniting East Burwood to celebrate 50 years to the day of opening their doors to help those in need. The Counselling Centre, born from the vision of Rev. Ernie King who recognised people in need, sat behind the neatly manicured lawns and brick houses in the Eastern suburbs. Congratulations and sincere thanks to all who have taken this organisation from strength to strength. Long may Uniting East Burwood continue to help those less fortunate. Last, but not least, I was fortunate to attend the opening show at The Round. What an exceptional theatre we can all be very proud of for many years to come.

Heritage Week I was pleased to be at Schwerkolt Cottage last month to kick off Heritage Week at the City of Whitehorse with the theme “All Aboard” which celebrated transport and journey making in Whitehorse. The annual heritage family day was a big success, thanks to the huge volunteering efforts from the Whitehorse Historical Society, local Rotary and Lions volunteers and all the amazing stall holders. I’m aware parking is always challenging and thank the local residents for their patience on the day.

Pizza boxes can now go in your recycling bin It can be confusing figuring out if the packaging from your latest fast food feed can be recycled or not.

Green Living Champion – Sue, Blackburn Meet our latest Green Living Champion, Sue, who’s discovered the wonders of switching to an eBike for her daily commute to work. Sue works in Box Hill’s hospital district and has been using her eBike to travel about 4.5km each way, from her Blackburn home to work, for more than two years. She found riding to work a great way to exercise and save money on fuel and carparking. “I used to drive and really felt it wasn’t environmentally friendly as it was a short distance, and parking at work was expensive too,” Sue said. “I investigated catching the train, but it was still going to cost, and it would take longer by the time I walked to the station, got off the train, and then walked from the station to work. Riding is almost as quick as driving.” Here are Sue’s top tips for people wanting to leave their car at home and have a go at riding:

Pizza lovers are used to putting their empty boxes into their general rubbish bins, mainly because the grease stains didn’t make them recyclable. But that’s now changed – Whitehorse residents can now put their pizza boxes into their recycling bins (yellow lid) after our service provider, Visy, unveiled new equipment. Visy has started using a drum pulper system with advanced paper recycling technology, allowing it to accept pizza boxes. Even if there are grease stains or a few crumbs in the box, the recycling process will remove this. Just remember to remove any pizza crusts or scraps of food from the box before adding it to your household recycling.

L For a handy tool to search what can be recycled, download the RecycleMate app or visit: www.recyclemate.com.au

Get involved in National Ride2Work Day Council’s active transport team encourages all regular bike riders and those keen to switch up their commute to get involved in National Ride2Work Day on Wednesday 18 October.

2) “ Ride every day and it will become your routine. Don’t think it’s too cold or too hot.

Whether you’re a regular two-wheeled commuter or looking to start a new healthy habit, National Ride2Work Day is all about supporting your decision to jump on the bike.

3) “ Check out the best routes to get to work, avoid busy roads as much as possible, and watch out for spots like schools where people are dropping off kids. Car doors opening are not great for cyclists.

Register your ride to help Bicycle Network understand where people are commuting by bike, how far they pedal and where there needs to be better places to ride.

4) “ Ensure you are visible. Have comfortable bright clothing and invest in some good lights”.

If you are at a workplace, consider holding an event to celebrate riding to work.

1) “ Research! Test out eBikes and see what suits you and what you are comfortable riding.

The 100 per cent recycled paper will then be remade into corrugated packaging for pizza boxes, the agricultural sector and some of Victoria’s favourite food and beverage brands.

Visit www.bicyclenetwork.com.au to learn more about Ride2Work day and for more information and resources. L To find a bike trail in Whitehorse which you could use as part of your commute to work, search ‘Easy Ride Routes’ on Council’s website.

Lock up and help stop car break-ins Whitehorse residents are being urged to work together and keep their cars secure to reduce recent break-ins and thefts in the local area. Here’s three key tips from local police officers to keep your cars and the contents in them safe: ▪ Lock up: Always lock all doors and roll up windows before leaving your car. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference. ▪ Secure parking: Choose well-lit and secure parking areas whenever possible. A safe spot can deter thieves and keep your car protected. ▪ Clear out valuables: Remove all valuable items from your car or hide them out of sight. Let’s make our vehicles less tempting for potential thieves.

With pollen season beginning this month and continuing until late December, residents are reminded of the potentially deadly dangers of Thunderstorm asthma. Thunderstorm asthma may occur when a storm strikes on a hot and windy day and there are high levels of pollen in the air. When a storm front hits, the pollen grains absorb the moisture and burst into tiny particles. The wind from the thunderstorm blows the particles down to ground level, where someone can inhale the particles deep into their lungs, triggering a serious asthma flare-up. Weather conditions like this can also trigger breathing problems in people who have seasonal hay fever. People who wheeze and sneeze with hay fever from pollens during spring are most likely to be affected, even if they have not been diagnosed with asthma before.

Tips to protect yourself from Thunderstorm asthma: ▪ Take any asthma preventer medication as

If your car is broken into, police advise you not to confront the thief, as your safety is more important than your possessions. They also recommend you don’t touch anything and to get in touch with your insurance company. L For immediate police attendance and to report a crime in progress, call Triple Zero (000). For non-emergencies, call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or report online at www.police. vic.gov.au/police-assistanceline-and-online-reporting

prescribed, particularly when in areas where there is ryegrass pollen. ▪ Follow the pollen counts and weather forecasts so you know if a storm is coming. ▪ Ensure your written asthma action plan is upto-date and includes advice for thunderstorms. ▪ Avoid being outdoors just before and during thunderstorms, especially when there are cold wind gusts prior to forecast rain. ▪ Get inside a building or car with the windows shut and turn your air conditioner to the recirculate/recycled function.
