Let’s Talk Mental Health The Let’s Talk Mental Health Forum aims to raise awareness of the impact of mental illness at different stages of life. Change your clock, change your smoke alarm batteries

This year we are heading to social media. Snap a pic of your favourite shopfront to win – full details on how to get involved in November's Whitehorse News and on www.wbiz.com.au

A reminder to all Whitehorse residents to change smoke alarm batteries at the same time clocks are changed for daylight savings on Sunday 7 October.

Growing our urban forest A major tree planting project by Council has seen Pembroke Street, Surrey Hills, turn over a new leaf. A number of residents let Council know that the cherry trees that previously lined Pembroke Street had reached their useful life expectancy. Council followed a thorough five-month process of consultation before replacing the cherry trees with trident maples to match the existing four maples already in the street. After 20 trees were removed, 34 new, healthy trees were replanted. This increase of 14 trees is a great outcome for the residents of Pembroke Street and the City of Whitehorse. It will help maintain a healthy and sustainable environment by increasing the City's tree canopy coverage, which helps keep temperatures down in summer.

The forum is presented by Whitehorse City Council and the Mental Health Foundation Australia. Guest speakers will provide information about services and support to assist people on their recovery journey.

Let’s Talk Mental Health Forum Date: Thursday 18 October Time: 9am-12.30pm Venue: Whitehorse Centre, 397 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading Cost: Free, but registration essential Registration: 9262 6443 or maureen.darcy@whitehorse.vic.gov.au

This forum is aimed at people working in the community sector, volunteer organisations and local businesses wanting to increase their knowledge and capacity to support people experiencing mental illness.

Did you know that without street trees, road surfaces can be up to 19 degrees hotter than when in shade?

Remove it, lock it or lose it! Whitehorse City Council, in partnership with Victoria Police, is rolling out the ‘Remove it, Lock it or Lose it’ crime prevention project. Whitehorse Mayor Councillor Andrew Davenport said the signs are a prominent reminder to the community to remove their valuables from cars. "Each week in Whitehorse, an average of 29 cars is reported to have been broken into,” said Cr Davenport. “However, this is lower than the previous year and we’d like the rate to decrease even further in the future.” Victoria Police has identified shopping centres, train stations and sports centre carparks as hotspots for theft from cars. Crime Prevention Officer with Victoria Police Senior Constable Rebecca Millin advises, “The best way to prevent theft from your parked car is to remove all valuables completely, no matter for how long or where you have parked it.”

A recent visual audit of 532 cars in two Whitehorse carparks found 40 valuable items easily visible and tempting to offenders, including handbags, GPS, dash cams, loose change, tools and sunglasses. Funded by the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program, this project is one part of a suite of activities undertaken by Victoria Police and Whitehorse City Council to address community safety and crime prevention in Whitehorse. More information www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au Right: Senior Constable Rebecca Millin, Crime Prevention Officer with Victoria Police and Whitehorse Mayor Councillor Andrew Davenport.

Building works begin at Nunawading Community Hub Works on the new Nunawading Community Hub on the former Nunawading Primary School site are to begin soon after Council awarded the building contract to construction firm Ireland Brown Constructions.

Once completed there will be 270 extra car parking spaces in central Box Hill.

More car parking spaces for Box Hill Council is transforming the old Harrow Street car park into an attractive fivelevel building with 560 car parking spaces, as well as bicycle parking, a dedicated community space and a welcoming plaza entry to Pioneer Park. The project is now in full swing following the building contract being awarded to leading Australian construction firm Buxton Construction. Buxton Construction will keep local property owners, traders and residents informed of any changes to pedestrian or traffic movement during construction. The car park at Cambridge Street will continue operating until the new Harrow Street Car Park opens in mid-2019. Council sold the Cambridge Street Car Park in 2016, and it will be eventually be developed into a mix of commercial and retail spaces, residential accommodation, an 104-place childcare centre and large public open spaces. More information and to sign up to regular email updates www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/Harrow-Street-Car-Park.html harrowstreetcarpark@whitehorse.vic.gov.au 9262 6333

The hub will feature a refurbished heritage school building, multi-functional classrooms, meeting rooms and function hall, spaces for dance, art, counselling and lapidary activities, a purpose-built Meals on Wheels facility and a full single-court sports stadium.

Construction will start in October 2018.

Extensive landscaping, new pedestrian and cycling paths and dedicated recreation areas will create a vibrant link to the adjacent Tunstall Park. More information and to sign up to regular email updates www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/NCH.html nunawadingcommunityhub@whitehorse.vic.gov.au 9262 6333

Top tips to ease the study load As exam time looms for many Whitehorse students, Council’s Youth Services team has put together some top study tips: ■■

■■

■■

■■

■■

Create a study area that has plenty of space. Choose somewhere with no distractions. Create a study timetable and remember to include regular breaks. Give yourself plenty of time so you don’t end up cramming at the end. Make some flash cards and carry them around with you to check when you have a spare moment. Eat a healthy diet, continue to exercise and make sure you get enough sleep in the lead up to exams.

Body Image By Whitehorse Youth Representative Committee member Vivian Wong. Why am I so short? Why is my stomach so fat? Why can’t I be more like those girls in the magazines? For many young people, thoughts like these consume every waking moment of their day. During this tumultuous time, teens are at their most impressionable – perceiving society’s ideal body type as the ultimate goal. Failure to conform results in shame and inadequacy. According to the Dove Global Beauty and Confidence Report, only 20 per cent of Australian females are confident in their bodies. So how can we combat negative body image to free ourselves from our own harsh mindsets? ■■

■■

Cruzin’ with your homework Council’s Youth Services Unit runs a free homework program called Cruzin’ Study to help young people aged 12-25 years with school work. It happens at the Box Hill Library on Thursdays throughout school terms from 4pm-6pm. Tutors can assist young people with lots of subjects including English, history, maths, science and literature. More information jacqueline.piper@whitehorse.vic.gov.au 9898 9340

■■

Be grateful for your body. It is an incredibly versatile and functional machine. Focus on making tiny steps towards a healthy lifestyle. Perhaps instead of mindlessly snacking, you could do a quick 10 minute workout. Spend time doing what you love and being with those you love. You don’t need a model's body to have fun.

Positive body image is not something we acquire overnight, but rather a journey of self-realisation and growth. If you need some help, don’t be afraid to call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 or read their article kidshelpline.com. au/teens/issues/developing-positive-body-image The Butterfly Foundation is another great resource for support and information: thebutterflyfoundation.org.au

This month I want to congratulate Koonung Community House for their initiative with shopping bags.

I had the pleasure of joining the Greenlink Box Hill family for their 30th Anniversary Celebration.

Congratulations to The Avenue at Eley Neighbourhood House on reaching their 35th year.

We all sometimes forget our bags when we go shopping, either we've left them at home or in the car. Koonung Community House asked for donations of fabric remnants and have made some strong bags which are available outside IGA at Blackburn North Square for free. It is an honour system. Take a bag but next time return it and you can also leave any excess bags for others to use. No need to buy a plastic bag any more! On Tuesday afternoons they are offering fabric and access to patterns and machines to make your own bags (Ph: 9878 6632).

I congratulate Greenlink Box Hill for reaching this milestone and thank the members and volunteers, past and present, for their hard work and dedication in propagating indigenous plants in Whitehorse.

This is indeed a milestone and thanks must go to all the volunteers who helped make this possible. Robust conversations took place with everyone relating their stories and memories of the past 35 years. Well done to staff who had diligently documented the 35 year history, which was on display for all to read, together with accompanying photos.

Below: A bag made by members of Koonung Community House.

Metropolitan Transport Forum and North East Link I attended the Metropolitan Transport Forum which was hosted at Box Hill Town Hall. State parliamentary members and representatives from major political parties discussed their transport policies. Whitehorse City Council hosted a community forum in relation to the North East Link, with guest speakers sharing their views and expertise. There was a great community turnout at both forums - thank you for your questions and valuable feedback. The North East Link Authority will be hosting a community drop-in session at Box Hill Central (North Precinct) on Thursday 18 October (9am-7pm). Other Highlights

Rotary Club of Forest Hill Another great community outcome was the effort by the Rotary Club of Forest Hill to sponsor local students for the Model United Nations Assembly. The students won their District Finals and came third in the National Finals in Canberra – a great achievement! Affording these opportunities for young community members is a great investment in building good citizens of the future. Whitehorse Seniors Festival I attended The Swinging Sixties Show as part of the Seniors Festival, presented by Wendy Stapleton, supported by her husband on guitar and daughter and niece as backing group. The audience had great fun singing and clapping along. Central Ward Forum Our next ward forum is Saturday 20 October from 1pm-3pm at Blackburn Lake Sanctuary Visitors Centre and I hope you can join myself and Cr Munroe for an update and discussion.

I had the pleasure of attending a number of other events, including Box Hill Hawks President’s Luncheon, Rotary Box Hill Central and Whitehorse Business Group’s joint breakfast seminar, Parkland Community Forum, Moon Festival in Box Hill, Australian Quilters Association exhibition and Civic Recognition of Youth Members in Scouting. A reminder that the Whitehorse Excellence in Business Awards gala dinner will be on the evening of Friday 9 November. Join us in recognising and celebrating the achievements of the Whitehorse business community. For more details visit www.whitehorsebusinessgroup.com.au All the best and until next time, Tina Below: Cr Liu (second from left) with Greenlink Box Hill committee members at their 30th Anniversary event.

Recent Events I hope you managed to attend one or more of the events on offer during Whitehorse Heritage Week. Sincere thanks to all the volunteers who gave their valuable time to make these events a success. I was disappointed to not be able to attend the North East Link Forum however feedback received informs me it was a very constructive forum attended by more than 150 people. The Forest Hill Football and Netball Clubs held their Presentation Night in September. From all accounts this was a very enjoyable evening. Off Lead Dog Parks As previously advertised, Council is reviewing off lead dog parks. Residents surrounding Tyrol Park in Vermont South should have received a letter seeking their opinion. The results of the review, including the resident feedback on Tyrol Park, will be made available soon. Whitehorse Women’s Forum Once again, the Whitehorse Women’s Forum was a very successful evening. The topic was Inspirational Stories – From Addiction to Recovery. I thought the speakers were very courageous in sharing their life journeys.

On 22 September, the 2018 Melbourne Moon Festival was held at the Box Hill Mall.

I would like to invite you to enjoy the annual Spring Festival.

Hosted by the Melbourne Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce, it was a great event. Well done to all involved. I look forward to the Chinese New Year Festival on 2 February 2019, which is being hosted by the Asian Business Association of Whitehorse.

I will be at the festival available to talk with you between 12noon and 1pm at the Council tent with Cr Prue Cutts. It is always a fantastic day despite the weather sometimes being unpredictable!

Greenlink 30th Anniversary

Council has selected Ireland Brown as the builder for the Nunawading Community Hub. This followed a process of asking the builders who had tendered for the project for their best and final offer. Builders should be on site this month, with work to commence soon. Council is aiming for construction to be completed by December 2019.

On 1 September, Cr Liu, Cr Barker, Cr Munroe and the Hon Robert Clark MP, State Member for Box Hill, attended Greenlink's 30th Anniversary, where Cr Liu, Cr Barker and I planted a tree to mark the occasion. It was good to hear from the residents who had been part of Greenlink and the contributions they have made to the rehabilitation of the environment. Avenue Neighbourhood House 35th Anniversary On 14 September, Cr Carr, Cr Massoud and Mr Neil Angus MP, State Member for Forest Hill, attended the Avenue Neighbourhood House's 35th anniversary afternoon tea. The Avenue @ Eley provides a number of education courses, social and recreational activities as well as some childcare. For more details, phone 0424 775 540 or visit www.boxhillartgroup.com.au Kara House Celebrating 40 Years of Service

Last month I attended the annual open day at Schwerkolt Cottage and Museum. There was plenty to see and do. It is always a great day out for families. The Schwerkolt family was one of the original settlers in Mitcham in the 1800s and their original stone cottage is still there so you can see how life was lived in the area at the time. Separation Tree Planting Ceremony I was pleased to attend a tree planting ceremony, with the Mayor Councillor Andrew Davenport, several other Councillors and others, to plant a sapling grown in our nursery, which came from the original 400 year old Separation Tree, which began dying after being vandalised twice.

Box Hill United Pythagoras Soccer Club In September, Mr Graham Watt, State Member for Burwood and I attended the Box Hill United SC Mini Roos Gala day, which was held at Wembley Park.

For 40 years Kara House has provided highly secure, safe crisis accommodation and outreach services in the Whitehorse community to support women and their children who experience family violence. This month, they will celebrate this milestone with an event at Box Hill Town Hall which will be an opportunity to talk about their work, their future plans and why the support of the local community is so important. Though Kara House’s core support services are government funded they are always actively working to improve the experience of the women and children they support with additional services like material aid and education and wellbeing activities. Small Actions, Big Difference There are many small actions that create a big difference for people affected by dementia, as well as their families and carers. People with dementia can continue to do many of the things they did before they received a diagnosis – but they may need support from their employer, community, local businesses, neighbours, friends and family members. Some small actions that businesses and community groups can take that make a big difference in the lives of people experiencing dementia and their carers include: ■■

Allow time for people to communicate their needs

■■

Have seating available

■■

Have clear signage that includes pictures

■■

Make information easy to read and understand. For instance, did you know that using all capital letters in signage makes word recognition harder?

■■

Move shelving and displays away from doorways

■■

Make the door and door frame different colours More information www.dementiafriendly.org.au

Life: Up Close and In Focus

October 2018

The Box Hill Rotary Whitehorse Art Show

16 – 28 October Opening: Thursday 18 October, 6pm-8pm

Box Hill Town Hall Friday 2 to Tuesday 6 November

Life: Up Close and In Focus is an exhibition of the macro photographic studies of Meaghan Lyon’s favourite subject – Australian Flora.

The 54th Annual Art Show is coming back to the Town Hall next month, with wonderful artworks on display and many of the works for sale at very affordable prices.

For many years, her friends and family received greeting cards decorated with her photos and, since her death in 2016, these cards have become very precious mementos. Coinciding with Mental Health Week, this exhibition is part of Meaghan’s legacy and is a formal recognition of her photographic ability. Its aim is also to help visitors become more comfortable in talking about mental health. All proceeds from the sale of these limited edition photos will be donated to Jesuit Social Services Support After Suicide program.

The opening night gala is on Thursday 1 November at 7pm and will be hosted by the legendary Mike Brady. Tickets are $75 per person, and include a three-course dinner, drinks and a preview of the exhibition. General Exhibition Admission: $10. There is no charge for the exhibition catalogue and no additional charge to attend demonstration sessions. Tickets: www.whitehorseartshow.com.au
