Welcome Dinner events connect newly arrived people with established Australians over a shared meal.

At a recent Councillor development forum I was able to hear Anna Meares speak about her journey to become arguably Australia’s greatest cyclist and Olympian (only Australian to win a medal at four Olympics).

Whilst I will not declare ‘mission accomplished’ I am delighted to report that we are making some good progress. As always, this is a whole of community challenge and Council needs your ongoing support.

An inspirational athlete, Anna broke her neck seven months out from the Beijing Olympics, but went on to win silver and was the only Australian, male or female, to win a cycling medal at those games.

New bilingual educational signs have been installed in Box Hill Central, extra budget has been allocated to staff resources and myself, Cr Tina Liu and Whitehorse Mayor Cr Andrew Davenport have held face to face conversations with the most senior executives from our major supermarket chains. Many of the interventions are a result of the great ideas the community has shared with me (I’m always thrilled to hear good ideas). To report dumped trolleys, call the major supermarket hotlines: Woolworths 1800 641 497 or Coles 1800 876 553. Please store these numbers in your phone.

What was an important part of her story was the sacrifices of her parents, such as the 300km round trip each weekend to training, which enabled her and her younger sister to become champion cyclists. So let me take the opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of all parents, who help not only just their children but others, in making our community's sporting options such a success.

Tyre dumping Sadly, there has been a spate of illegal tyre dumping in residential streets which, as far as I am concerned, is premeditated, industrial scale, environmental vandalism and the offenders need to be identified and prosecuted. If you see any suspicious activity, please phone Box Hill Police on 8892 3200.

Morton Park Great news in the budget for our local community, with the 2018/19 Budget passed by Council with the allocation of $4.75m for the construction of a state of the art new pavilion at Morton Park. I would like to acknowledge Michael Sukkar MP, Federal Member for Deakin, whose federal funding pledge of $500,000 has enabled Council to bring forward this excellent project. The new facility will provide a great boost not only for Blackburn Football and Cricket Clubs but also the wider community. Taralye – Market Day The oral language centre for deaf children held its 34th annual market day in August which I was pleased to attend. This is a special year for Taralye as it celebrates 50 years. Market Day has become a local institution and, despite a rather cold and wet day, attendance was still strong and important funds were raised.

Out and About I’ve been delighted to join in with working bees, football and netball club nights, MASH Rotary Schools Speech Competition, The Box Hill North Tennis Club Anniversary, the opening of The Golden Lily in Box Hill and Box Hill Hawks, Pioneers and Surrey Park club functions. As always can I sincerely thank all the volunteers in our community that power our community groups. I am convinced our volunteers and clubs provide the foundation of a great community, and by extension, make Australia a better nation every day.

My wife and I were delighted to attend this event recently at Box Hill Town Hall. Our next door neighbours recently arrived from southern China and we were pleased to be able to invite this young family to accompany us for this occasion. The range of food offered was amazing. Our neighbours had brought pork spare ribs and other guests on our table supplied samosa with a dipping sauce and an Asian style salad, amongst other delights. We supplied lamb patties and mini pavlovas! It was a true feast for everyone but most importantly it enabled connections between people of diverse cultures living in our community. Sporting Clubs It’s always a pleasure to be invited along to local sporting clubs to witness first hand the passionate people involved in offering so many opportunities in our local community. Two recent invitations were received from the Forest Hill Football Club and the East Burwood Football Club. Both these clubs have a rich history and at the moment are rivals in their division. The respect between these clubs is obvious for all to see and they certainly demonstrate all the good things that sporting clubs like these add to our social fabric. Public Transport I think we all agree that public transport needs to be improved as part of tackling the ever increasing traffic congestion in our neighbourhoods. As the Council delegate on the Eastern Transport Coalition, could I encourage comments/suggestions on the website www.etc.org.au to assist with our lobbying efforts. See page 4 for more details. Until next time, Bill

It was great to see the refurbishment that has occurred at Box Hill Library.

What a month it’s been!

The new look was launched by our Mayor Councillor Andrew Davenport and Mr Shaun Leane MP, MLC, representing the state government, which had shared the cost of the much needed works. Box Hill Library has always been much loved by the community and, with the recent growth in Box Hill, is well utilised.

Many charity functions and community engagement, planning consultation forums and resident meetings, openings, trips to the city, committee and board responsibilities. Pavilions Blackburn Lake Retirement Village I was very honoured to speak at the sod turning ceremony for Pavilions Blackburn Lake. The first residents can expect to move in in approximately two years. The holistic approach to senior living aligns with Council’s vision for a healthy, active and connected Whitehorse community. Walk to End Homelessness – Ringwood Lake The day after the opening of Pavilions Blackburn Lake I attended the Homeward Bound walk with Maroondah councillors to raise awareness of the increasing incidence of homelessness in our local communities. You could not get two more diverse experiences in 24 hours. Whitehorse is one of the local government areas with the least affordable housing. We need action and I intend to shine the light on this serious social issue in the future.

Community Briefs Spring Orchid Show The Whitehorse-based Maroondah Orchid Society Inc. Spring Orchid Show will be held on Saturday 29 September, 9am-5pm, and Sunday 30 September, 9am-4pm. Hundreds of flowering plants from all around the world will be on show creating a spectacular display of colour and contrast. There will be floral art displays and sales, flowering plant sales, potting demonstrations, members on hand to answer questions and morning and afternoon tea. Where: St. Timothy’s Catholic Community School Hall, 21 Stevens Road, Vermont. Admission: Adults $5, Under 12 free. Free orchids for children!

Wildflowers in Yarran Dheran Join a guided walk through Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve and see some of the many wildflowers that bloom in the Mullum Mullum valley in springtime. This walk will be led by well-known local environmentalist and noted nature photographer, Ian Moodie. When: Friday 21 September, 10am-11.30am Where: Meet at the Yarran Dheran Information Centre, Ashburton Drive, Mitcham.

Free event, but bookings essential: gay.gallagher@bigpond.com Children are welcome.

Ice Bath Dunking at Mitcham Football Club Photo: Mr Shaun Leane, Cr Ellis and Cr Davenport.

Like all the libraries within Whitehorse, it has successfully evolved to meet the changing needs of the community. Student Accommodation Strategy This policy was first developed over a decade ago and it has now been revamped to reflect the changes that have occurred during that time. It is important that student accommodation not only addresses the needs of students but also respects the amenity of the adjoining community. On 20 August 2018, Council approved the new strategy. This will now be forwarded to the Minister for Planning to prepare and exhibit a planning scheme amendment for comment. This strategy requires a much higher rate of on-site parking than previously, which will hopefully ease the congestion on the residential streets.

I attended Mitcham FC’s Ladies Day luncheon in support of MND awareness with Neale Daniher, the legend himself. Following this, there was a number of dunkings in the ice bath (in a massive trough of water topped up with ice) including Club officials, Cr Ben Stennett and myself. Can I just say that this is not something I would relish doing again, but it was for such a worthy cause, I would do it again! Council Delegations As Deputy Chair of the Whitehorse Manningham Regional Library Corporation board, I was delighted to attend the recent unveiling of the $516k Box Hill Library refurbishment. This was a joint project by Whitehorse City Council, the Library Corporation and the State Government. Photo: Cr Prue Cutts after her dunking in the Fight MND Ice Bath Challenge.

Community Nursery Open Days Greenlink Nursery will be holding another Spring Open Day on Saturday 15 September from 9am to 12 noon. Greenlink is a community-based nursery specialising in plants indigenous to Whitehorse. Bring the voucher from the back of your Council calendar to buy 5 get 5 free. Plants are $2 - $2.50. Become a Waste Warrior – Recycling Plastics Paper and Household Packaging Your yellow-lidded recycling bin is collected fortnightly, and each household can choose from either the standard 240L bin or a larger 360L size. You are also entitled to a second recycling bin.

All plastic bags should be kept out of your kerbside recycling bin – even if they contain recyclable items! All recycling should be loose.

Do not put these in: Plastic containers from the shed that have contained things like oil, chemicals or petrol should not be placed in your yellow-lidded recycling bin.

What can be recycled: ✓✓Hard, rigid plastic containers from the kitchen, bathroom or laundry

✓✓Aluminium, steel, aerosol cans and clean foil ✓✓Milk and juice containers ✓✓Glass bottles and jars (no lids) ✓✓Cereal and food boxes ✓✓Newspapers ✓✓Cardboard ✓✓Telephone books ✓✓Envelopes ✓✓Office paper ✓✓Letters, advertising materials and magazines The thinnest plastic packaging that is considered rigid in the Whitehorse collection is the thickness of a biscuit tray.

✗✗ Plastic shopping bags ✗✗ Soft/flexible plastic packaging such as bread bags, pasta bags, plastic wrapping paper or chip wrappers

✗✗ Any glass items except bottles and jars ✗✗ Crockery: Pyrex, plates, mugs etc ✗✗ Motor oil containers ✗✗ Cling wrap ✗✗ Polystyrene foam ✗✗ Clothing and textiles ✗✗ Scrap metal appliances ✗✗ Car parts and cooking utensils ✗✗ Waxed cardboard ✗✗ Plastic coated paper ✗✗ Food-soiled cardboard containers Soft Plastics Plastic bags and other soft flexible plastics are not recycled in your yellow-lidded recycling bin collection. Many supermarket chains now have bins to collect these plastics for recycling. Use them for soft plastics like pasta bags, frozen vegetable bags, chocolate wrappers, broken reusable ‘green’ bags and chip packets.

Plastic lids can be left on plastic bottles for recycling.

Whitehorse Mayor Councillor Andrew Davenport (centre) with EERN volunteers Joy and Ray.

Renew Wrap Up Thank you to the Whitehorse residents who took part in May’s Renew Collection and Drop-Off Day. A total of 92.25 tonnes of household goods was diverted from landfill and will now be reused or recycled. Two shipping containers of items were provided to charities and social enterprises. Also diverted from landfill were 80 adult bikes that were donated to Bikes4Life, which provides bicycles to underprivileged youth. Electrical goods and furniture were provided to the Eastern Emergency Relief Network (pictured above). More information www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/ Recycling-Household-Items.html 9262 6333

Houston Shopping Centre gets a facelift

5-Star Food Hygiene Safety Focus The Cheesecake Shop in Mitcham is Council’s 5-Star Food Hygiene Focus for September for achieving excellence in food safety standards.

Flowering trees, picnic seating and some fascinating historical information are part of the attractive upgrade of the Houston Shopping Centre on Middleborough Road.

The popular cake shop achieved this accolade after getting top marks in Council’s 5-Star Health Assessment System. All food businesses achieving a 5-star rating are promoted in Council publications and are eligible for the prestigious Food Premises of the Year Award.

New pavements have been installed with steel bands presenting passages of a historical poem about the site. The land around Houston Shopping Centre was once a key site frequented by artists from the Heidelberg School, including Frederick McCubbin, Arthur Streeton and Jane Sutherland. The land belonged to their friend, farmer David Houston – the namesake of the shopping strip.

Happy Box Hill - the barked roof of the old people, Houstens [sic] - the land sylvan as it ever was - tea tree along the creek - young blue gum twigs - the 'good night' of the jackies as the soft darkness fell - then talks around the fire, the 'Prof' [McCubbin] philosophic - we forgot everything but the peace of it.
