Did you know?

E-waste is growing three times faster than general waste in Australia.

Get To Know Your E-Waste E-waste is the fastest-growing category of waste worldwide. That’s why the Victorian State Government will ban e-waste from landfill from 1 July 2019.

E-Waste landfill ban

It is estimated that one in five Australians has a stash of e-waste in their home or office and that the amount of e-waste generated in Australia will increase by more than 60 percent by 2024 for televisions and computers alone.

You can use these services for e-waste instead:

Non-renewable materials such as copper, silver, gold, plastic and glass are often found in e-waste. These materials can be recovered and reused only if they are not sent to landfill.

In some cases, the amount of precious metals trapped in e-waste now outweighs the amount of metals available to mine.

Whitehorse Mayor Councillor Bill Bennett is encouraging the community to book a hard waste collection to dispose of e-waste.

From 1 July 2019, you will no longer be able to dispose of e-waste through your kerbside bin collection services.

The upgraded BMX Track is a separate track for all skill levels. Practice makes perfect, so grab your helmet and try out your most impressive tricks. The tracks have been completed thanks to Council’s conversations with local young people who pointed out the need for a mountain bike track in the reserve. Great idea guys!

Sustainability Education in the Early Years Children at Whitehorse Early Learning Services (WELS) care for the earth in fun, interesting and educational ways. Educators at Lucknow Street Children’s Services Centre have implemented great sustainability experiences for the centre’s children to help them become mindful of how they engage with the environment. From planting flowers, seeds and vegetables to helping collect food scraps and putting them in the compost bin, the children are learning how to build a green future. They look after indoor plants, learn about the rain cycle, talk about the daily UV rating when applying sunscreen, and explore the fauna and flora of the nearby nature reserve during bush kinder sessions.

“Ready, set, go,” called the Mayor in late January as he started the 364 runners/walkers as Gardiners Creek parkrun celebrated its first anniversary.

I am delighted to report excellent progress on my election commitments to make cost effective and innovative improvements to local parks.

Recently I had the pleasure of opening the program for the 5 Star Food Hygiene Assessment Business of the Year awards presentation.

Held every Saturday at 8am, adjacent to Deakin University, parkrun is a free community event run by volunteers. It offers a 5km circuit to run, jog or walk (dogs on a lead are also welcome).

Springfield Park

The aim of this program is to improve the safety of food being manufactured, handled, stored and sold in the municipality. The program educates businesses involved in food handling, assesses their compliance with documented standards and rewards businesses that demonstrate best practice in food safety. Health and safety is important to everyone and it was good to see our local businesses wanting to learn more about this program

In the past year Gardiners Creek has hosted over 2000 runners at close to 10,000 runs covering 50,000km. Parkrun was founded in the UK in 2004 and commenced in Australia in 2011. Today there 345 locations around the country. With two parkruns in Whitehorse – Gardiners Creek and Mullum Mullum (adjacent to Schwerkolt Cottage) – it’s easy to participate. Details at www.parkrun.com.au

The planting of the eastern fence at Springfield Park has been delivered (more than 300 plants and shrubs). This will improve the appearance of the park, protect the fence from graffiti and cricket balls, offer better security to our neighbours and provide habitat for birds and bees etc. The CCTV trial at Springfield Park also appears to be a great success, with the park enjoying record use and undesirable activities appear to have ceased completely. Mont Albert Reserve New trees will soon be planted on the eastern side of Mont Albert Reserve. A selection was determined after Council specialists consulted with the sporting clubs and casual park users. Our objectives were improved appearance, shade and habitat while maintaining the beautiful turf and views to the Dandenongs. A number of new seats have been installed, which are proving to be very popular.

2019 Budget Part of my role with the support of fellow Councillors is to deliver a community budget briefing. It was good to get feedback from the community because shortly we will be making decisions in relation to the 2019/2020 budget. Council will be considering the draft budget at our 15 April meeting and then asking for further community input and review up until mid-May. I would encourage you to tell us what is important to you. Whitehorse Centre Design Competition As the community representative, I can report that this process has begun. Submissions were received from many major organisations and the process was chaired by Professor Geoffrey London. We now look forward to the design entries from the short listed entrants, once finalised. Until next time, Bill

Chinese New Year Once again congratulations to the Asian Business Association of Whitehorse for a successful Chinese New Year celebration in Box Hill. For those that follow my Facebook page you will notice I took the opportunity to give Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who attended the official opening with the Opposition Leader, a positive wrap about our City. Above (L-R): Cr Andrew Munroe, parkrun event director Oyiela Litaba and Whitehorse Mayor Councillor Bill Bennett.

It is pleasing to see new off-lead dog areas delivered at Eram Park and Elgar Park, which are also enjoying excellent new levels of use. Dumped Shopping Trolleys and Rubbish My war on dumped shopping trolleys and rubbish continues successfully. Real improvements are noticeable and more than 600 people last year joined the virtual, socially minded army using app SnapSendSolve. Thank you to our magnificent community for your support. February was an exciting month with lots of weekend events to attend.

Congratulations to our local heroes!

The Chinese New Year Festival gets bigger and more popular each year. This year it attracted visitors from far and wide, including Canberra! Not only did we have the Prime Minister and Opposition leader attend, but also the Victorian Premier and many members of Parliament. Mont Albert Cricket Club I was delighted to attend the annual McGrath Foundation lunch, which supports funding for breast cancer research. There would be very few people in our community who have not been touched by breast cancer in some way – whether it be a family member, close friend or even themselves. The pavilion was packed with women (most of them local) who had come to support the event. It was great to see that our well designed sporting facilities can be used for other community events. Box Hill United Soccer Club What a delight it was to attend Wembley Park to be part of the jumper presentation for the junior teams. Over recent years the level of participation of junior players has grown enormously, along with an increase in the level of family involvement. It is a vibrant, inclusive, successful club which is encouraging young people to be involved in sport.

Seven young visionaries advocated for a Mountain Bike track at Heatherdale Reserve late in 2017 after a winter where the local BMX track was unusable due to waterlogging. After investigations and community consultation their concept was deemed feasible, and was recently delivered by Council officers for the benefit of the whole community. The incredible thing is – these kids were in Year 6, 7 and 8 at the time! As a parent of a teenager and a teacher, getting kids off their devices and outside being active ticks all boxes. We have become a society addicted to technology; children and adults alike are becoming increasingly inactive, so an outdoors venue like this is a wonderful addition for our local community, to be used by all ages. Well done all! Left: Nelson, Jack and Edwin, three of the seven young lads responsible for the new Heatherdale Mountain Bike Skills Loop at Heatherdale Reserve.

Whitehorse Food Hygiene 5 Star Awards The Food Premises of the Year Community Award was recently won by Nunawading Christian College. Congratulations to all involved! Over 800 food hygiene assessments were undertaken by Council officers in 2018. Given there has been some negative publicity locally in recent weeks, these awards are a great reminder of the important role Council plays in ensuring food premises continually aim for food hygiene excellence!

International Women's Day On Friday 8 March I encourage all women to congratulate themselves and each other on their achievements. A lot of women don't realise the huge contribution they make to our community, particularly in volunteering. Our schools, sporting clubs, seniors clubs and a myriad of other organisations would be lost without their support.
