New Box Hill Car Park Makes Strong Green Statement The innovative architectural design and environmentally-sustainable design (ESD) features of the new Council-owned Harrow Street multideck car park in Box Hill make a strong green statement. Whitehorse City Council’s Major Projects team, in conjunction with the assigned architects, designed a car park that’s highly functional in its use of space yet understated in its visual presence through clever integration with the environmental surrounds. The outside of the building has recessed landscaped garden beds along John and Harrow streets with strong visual and physical connection with Pioneer Park, and the existing mature eucalypt trees along the southern boundary have been retained to preserve the existing buffer between the building and neighbouring residences. The ESD features include: ■■

Cr Prue Cutts, Whitehorse City Council CEO Simon McMillan, Mayor Bill Bennett, General Manager Infrastructure Nigel Brown, Cr Denise Massoud, General Manager City Development Jeff Green and Cr Blair Barker at the official opening of the car park in September.
To further enhance the local environment and create improved green spaces for the community to enjoy, Council has redeveloped the adjacent Pioneer Park into an attractive setting with new paths, landscaped areas and additional bench seating.

This year’s Garage Sale Trail is set to be the biggest yet with 400,000 Aussies projected to take part as both sellers and shoppers in over 18,000 garage sale events. Now in its ninth year, the multi award-winning national initiative seeks to educate Australians on the importance of reuse and the need to take individual responsibility for the impact of our consumption habits while building stronger, more connected and resilient communities. So, what are you waiting for? Get involved with your community, do your bit for the planet and lighten your load by putting your sale on the trail now at www.garagesaletrail.com.au

More Trees for Whitehorse Over the next few years, Whitehorse City Council will be planting more trees throughout the municipality with the goal of reaching a canopy cover of 30 per cent. Trees on public and private land provide many environmental, social and health benefits to the community. All the trees, shrubs and grasses in Whitehorse make up what is called the urban forest. To get the most out of our urban forest, at least 30 per cent canopy coverage is needed across the municipality.
Council will plant close to 1000 street trees in Mitcham, as part of the suburb upgrade over the next year.
Next winter, Council will be planting close to 1000 street trees in Mitcham to increase the canopy coverage in that suburb. Council is encouraging those with no or only a few trees to start planting on their private property to help us reach this target for the benefit of the entire community. More information www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/waste-environment/ trees-and-gardens
Get Rewarded for Living Sustainably Council has teamed up with GreenMoney to reward Whitehorse residents, students, workers and volunteers for taking green actions at home and around the City. Once you join GreenMoney, you will earn reward points for taking simple green actions such as pledging to ride your bike, planting a tree or ditching single use coffee cups.

Workshop: Native Pollinators Monday 7 October, 7.30pm-9pm
Where: Nunawading Civic Centre, Willis Room, 379 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading Free but bookings essential: www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/events/ native-pollinators
What you can do to help our pollinators? Native pollinators are very important for ecosystems and food production. With the growing concern about the decline in insect abundance, now is a good time support pollinators in our suburbs. Karen Thomas, Regional Agriculture Facilitator for the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (PPWCMA), will explore the actions we can take as gardeners to boost pollinator biodiversity and keep plants fruiting and setting seed. If you’ve got a veggie patch, fruit trees or just love biodiversity, supporting insects is a worthwhile goal. All participants will receive an insect attracting plant to take home.
You can redeem points online for exclusive discounts on coffee, movie tickets, food and more at businesses near you. Whitehorse News recently caught up with Deakin University employee Hana Williamson, who works in Burwood and recently registered as a GreenMoney user. Why did you join Green Money? I joined Green Money mainly to find ways that I could help the environment in my everyday life, but also to be rewarded for doing things like avoiding single-use plastic and recycling properly, and learning how to better look after the environment.
Keeping Trees Clear of Power Lines
What motivates you to participate in challenges?
Council manages tree pruning on public land to ensure a safe distance between trees and power lines.
I really enjoy learning about what else I could be doing, or what I am doing wrong, and finding new ways to help sustain the environment that we live in. It’s also great to earn points and redeem rewards for the actions I take to help the environment, like taking my keep cup everywhere. What new knowledge have you gained about recycling or the environment from using the app?
This month, pruning will occur in Burwood East, Burwood, Forest Hill and Vermont.
I’ve found it really interesting to learn about what I can and can’t recycle and the best way to do it. I also learnt that it costs me a lot for every extra degree I set my heater over 19 degrees and why I shouldn’t put soft plastics in my kerbside bin.
Pruning is done in accordance with the Electricity Safety (Electric Line Clearance) Regulations 2015 and also with Council’s Electric Line Clearance Management Plan.

Recently we enjoyed a wonderful Whitehorse Walk for Community Connections at Blackburn Lake Sanctuary which was well attended by local residents.
As previously mentioned, Council is currently undertaking an Integrated Transport Study of central Box Hill to look at how people move and better plan for current and future growth.
In August, I spent a delightful couple of hours at St. James Primary School in Vermont and had the privilege of cutting the ribbon on their fantastic new mural.
As a part of this, there will be two community drop-in sessions at Box Hill Mall on Thursday 10 and Saturday 12 October (12 noon-2pm). Drop by if you get the chance as we would love to hear your thoughts on active transport (for example walking or cycling), public transport and driving.
This was made possible by the Whitehorse Artist in Schools Program. Over the years, I have attended many of these wonderful events that involve the entire school. What makes them great is that a child may only get to paint a leaf, but they are then immortalised in this piece of work.
So many enjoyed the wonderful bush environment as they connected and also remembered lost loved ones. Thank You to Our Volunteers Thank you to all volunteers working hard to maintain our open spaces. Spring brings with it many weeds and support of volunteers working together to remove them is an important task. Join the weeding team at Blackburn Lake Visitors Centre at 9.30am every Saturday during October to make a difference. Also contact any local parkland group as they all need help at this time. Bushland Education Program As part of Council’s Bushland Education Program, Year 11 Chemistry students from Nunawading Christian College recently examined the water quality that enters Blackburn Lake. Water samples were collected and tested plus they observed the litter that enters and learnt how we try to trap it. They saw a duck nesting at the top of a dead tree trunk illustrating the need to keep dead trees for habitat. Responsible Pet Ownership I visited Bob Saker oval, an off lead dog area, and was disappointed to see a couple of dog faeces piles which had been left by some dog owners. I do ask all dog owners to watch their dogs and actively pick up after them. We need to respect the amenity for all users of community spaces. 1st/8th Blackburn Scouts Blackburn scouts are doing a study of litter over 18 months and have already identified that cigarette butts are a major issue. Please dispose of cigarette butts appropriately. Ward Forum The next Central Ward forum to give an update to residents will be held on Sunday 27 October, commencing at 1pm at the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary Visitors Centre. Come along, enjoy a walk afterwards or browse the displays. Hope to see you at the Whitehorse Spring Festival on Sunday 20 October. It is a great family day.
Event Highlights As the Chair of the Whitehorse Manningham Library Corporation, I had the pleasure of launching the Bert Lewis Room (formerly Meeting Room 1) at Box Hill Library, in honour of Herbert Lewis and his contribution to our public library services in the area and broader community. Mr Lewis was Box Hill City Librarian from 1954 to 1981 and was a strong advocate for public libraries. A number of other Councillors were in attendance, as were some of Bert’s relatives, Box Hill Historical Society members, community members and Melbourne author Stewart Kells. I took part in our Library Volunteer Thank You Event to recognise all the hard work and dedication of our library volunteers. We currently have 160 volunteers engaged in the delivery of various programs. I would like to take this opportunity to once again say a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful volunteers. The inaugural Whitehorse Walk for Community Connection was held last month at Blackburn Lake. It was great to see the local community members take part in this event to further raise awareness around mental health and provide an opportunity for our community to better connect. I also had the pleasure of attending Box Hill (Broncos) Rugby Union Football Club’s 60th Anniversary Ball (left). Congratulations to the Club on reaching this amazing milestone! Cr Tina Liu with Box Hill Rugby Union Football Club President Jack Goodman.
Vermont Secondary College Student Awards I was also honoured to be asked to present awards to students at Vermont Secondary College. The students wrote a piece of their choice and read it aloud to the audience. No mean feat! To write a piece is one thing, but then to stand up before your peers and parents and read it aloud with passion is quite another. I must say that all the students did an amazing job and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Whitehorse Walk for Community Connection Another inspirational event I attended was the Whitehorse Walk for Community Connection. The number of people who attended and connected on the day was great to see! All agreed we need to support our community members much more. Ironically, I’m writing this column on R U OK? Day and we really need to get back to the simple things in life and ask our friends and neighbours, R U OK? Until next time.

I would like to thank all people who submitted to the significant landscape overlay SLO9, and note that only 26% of the submissions were in favour of the amendment.
Last month was Heritage Week in Whitehorse.
Issues raised included impacts on private property rights, cost of enforcement and cost of permits and arborist report. At Council, we unanimously agreed to refer the amendment to an independent panel for consideration. Box Hill Broncos 60th Anniversary Dinner On 13 September Cr Liu, Cr Barker and I attended the Box Hill Broncos 60th anniversary dinner which celebrated Rugby Union being played in the area. Whitehorse City Council was acknowledged for the work which is being undertaken to update the playing facilities to support female participation in sport. The Sparks Reserve venue plays host to a number of regional competitions which generates economic activity for the City.
The Schwerkolt Cottage and Museum Complex in Mitcham again held its annual Heritage Day. It’s always a fantastic day for the whole community, especially families, regardless of the weather! There were many free activities including face painting and an animal farm. We enjoyed the music of Brumbies Bush Band and had the opportunity to wander through the cottage, museum and orchard display shed and take a guided tour. Nunawading Community Hub Update This is an exciting project that is under construction and due for completion early to mid-next year. The Nunawading Community Hub will be home to many community groups currently at Silver Grove Nunawading including the University of the 3rd Age (U3A), which has around 2,100 members, and is the largest U3A in the Southern Hemisphere.
Watercolour Art Show On 24 August I attended the Box Hill South Neighbourhood House’s Annual Park Artists Watercolour Exhibition to see the wonderful water paintings and enjoy the Devonshire tea. It proved to be a great exhibition, and I look forward to the event next year.
Dharma Talk By Venerable Miao Guang On 17 September I attended a talk on the introduction to Venerable Master Hsing Yun's One Stroke Calligraphy where Venerable Miao Guang shares valuable insights on Venerable Master Hsing Yun's journey on his One Stroke Calligraphy at Box Hill Town Hall. Hosted by the local Er You temple, the Town Hall contained many examples of Calligraphy, with meanings in English. It was a wonderful presentation.

Protect Yourself This Grass Pollen Season Grass pollen season brings an increase in asthma and hay fever. During the season, a high pollen count and a certain type of thunderstorm can also trigger thunderstorm asthma. For people with asthma or hay fever, especially those who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life threatening. That’s why it’s important for people with asthma or hay fever to know about thunderstorm asthma and what
they can do to help protect themselves during grass pollen season. Anyone with asthma should monitor weather alerts for potential thunderstorm asthma events so they can adequately prepare. Epidemic thunderstorm asthma is where a large number of people develop asthma symptoms over a short period of time. It is thought to be triggered by a unique combination of high pollen levels and a certain type of thunderstorm. Grass pollen grains get swept up in the wind and carried for long distances, some can burst open
and release tiny particles that are concentrated in the wind gusts that come just before a thunderstorm. These particles are small enough to be breathed deep into the lungs and can trigger asthma symptoms, making it difficult to breathe. In Victoria, the grass pollen season runs from October through December. Take action to prepare and protect yourself and people in your care this grass pollen season. Introducing Box Hill’s New Logo... Box Hill is one of Melbourne’s leading Metropolitan Activity Centres and is experiencing unprecedented growth in development and investment, making this the perfect time to introduce a new logo to represent this thriving suburb. A design competition was held earlier this year inviting the community to submit a logo that they thought best represented Box Hill. We received 65 entries, including students, residents and local design businesses from the City of Whitehorse. The winning logo is vibrant and energetic and represents Box Hill’s diverse community, its health and education sectors and its dynamic corporate sector. The winning design was selected by a panel consisting of members from Deakin University, Box Hill Institute, Bendigo Bank, Epworth Eastern, The Chen, Vicinity Centres, The Whitehorse Business Group, as well as Whitehorse’s Mayor and Elgar Ward Councillors. Local resident and graphic designer Sarishty Singh designed the winning entry, winning herself an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. Thank you to our sponsors Deakin University and Box Hill Institute for this great prize.
Why does Box Hill need a new logo?
Where will the logo be used?
Box Hill's logo will be used to promote this Metropolitan Activity Centre as a fabulous place to live, work and invest. The original Box Hill logo was developed in 2008. Box Hill has changed significantly since then, which is why a new logo was in order.
Look out for the new logo on Box Hill's website at www.boxhill.com.au and in our Down to Business newsletter. It will slowly be rolled out in other marketing materials that Council uses to promote economic development in Box Hill.
We received some amazing entries from students, and would like to congratulate these fabulous entrants.

What does Box Hill mean to you? Being a shopaholic, Box Hill is heaven for me. But on a serious note, Box Hill is a multicultural business hub and according to me, the way it has evolved it could be Melbourne’s second CBD. How did you come up with the design concept for the logo? I followed the brief and requirements very closely. I wanted to make the logo look more corporate, yet not boring. I used multiple colours to represent different elements of Box Hill, such as business, education, transport and healthcare. These colours also represent the multicultural aspect of Box Hill.

Artists in Schools St James Primary School in Vermont recently unveiled their project from the 2019 Artists in Schools Program. The project ‘Our Living City – Melbourne’ involved all students sharing images of landmarks and other points of interest in Melbourne. A series of chosen images were mapped into a grid and incorporated into eight large panels and installed at the school. The mural was created by the students, developed by artist Jann Daly and facilitated by art teacher, Anne Gleeson. The Artists in Schools program is a City of Whitehorse initiative which enables local schools to employ a professional artist to work on exciting art projects within the school. Through this program, the City of Whitehorse actively supports the growth and development of arts in local school communities. The program provides funding for arts projects in all areas including visual, performing, music, literature and design. Council funds the full cost of hiring the artist, however, schools are responsible for funding the materials and any other costs associated with their chosen projects. Past projects have included felt-making, ceramic and mosaic works, sculpture, performance, dance, metalwork, circus skills and children's books illustration. Applications for the program open annually in April/May, so put it in your diary for next year. More information www.boxhilltownhall.com.au/ Artspace-Schools-Program.html 9262 6250
