Harrow Street Car Park in Box Hill Opens to Public The community is invited to use this new undercover, secure and well-lit car park in central Box Hill. Workers, shoppers and other visitors to central Box Hill now benefit from a net increase of 271 parking spaces in the immediate vicinity, which will help ease traffic congestion and save commuters’ time looking for a car park. Key features of the five-level car park include 562 car parking bays, including nine accessible parking bays, 12 bicycle racks, 12 motorcycle spaces and CCTV cameras throughout. With the opening of the new car park, the Cambridge Street Car Park has ceased operating as a Council-owned car park. Care Park, one of Australia’s largest parking operators, has been engaged to operate the new Harrow Street Car Park on behalf of Council.

While car park rates are displayed at the John Street vehicle entrance, full details of the operating days, times, fees and other information can be found on the Care Park website at carepark.com.au Council has appreciated the cooperation and support of local traders and residents during the construction phase. The final result is a much-needed community asset that supports the important role Box Hill plays as one of Melbourne’s key activity centres. Adults over 60 created images of how they saw themselves back ‘then’ as children compared to how they see themselves in the ‘now’.

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art form that is practised as a type of gentle exercise. It involves smooth, flowing movements to help improve the flow of life energy, or Qi (pronounced ‘chee’), through your body. This is said to help create a sense of relaxation and improve or maintain health. Join Genevieve and Tang as they take you gently through this session while explaining the philosophy behind this graceful exercise form. As part of our recent Sustainability Week, Council presented a Solar Made Easy forum to a packed Box Hill Town Hall.

I am pleased to report steady progress with my commitment to ensure Box Hill's commercial centre remains open to all, not just property developers.

We welcome our new CEO, Simon McMillan, who takes the reins from our long serving previous CEO Noelene Duff.

Respected solar expert and former CSIRO engineer Finn Peacock walked those attending through his seven-step process for reducing your electricity bills with solar. You can go to his website for more information. The take out for me was that the payback on batteries is still on the high side for solar but with both federal and state government assistance available, the upfront cost is modest and the returns potentially high. The night also included a number of displays from local solar and battery installers.

I have optimism that we can make massive improvements to central Box Hill.

Simon has been CEO of Banyule City Council for the past 12 years and is considered to be one of the most outstanding CEOs in metropolitan Melbourne. On behalf of Council, welcome Simon!

Special Olympics

Local Volunteers

On behalf of the Mayor, I was pleased to attend the recent Melbourne Inner East annual dinner held at Box Hill Institute. A great night celebrating the achievements of the athletes, their coaches and the many family and volunteers who support the training, events and competitions. This group is the largest in the state and its athletes have achieved a great deal in the past year.

One of the joys of being a Councillor with two active kids is the amount of time I am able to spend alongside so many local volunteers. I’ve been delighted to attend rugby, swimming, basketball, football (men, women, senior and junior), soccer, karate, netball and hockey. I’ve been impressed with the work of our community nursery Greenlink (they generated 34,000 seedlings in the last year!), an incredible recent exhibition by the Whitehorse Arts Association and, of course, our RSL and so many others, who are all powered by volunteers.

Thank you Noelene Duff While this month sees the appointment of the highly regarded former Banyule CEO Simon McMillan, to the role at Whitehorse, I would like to take an opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding contribution to our city of Noelene Duff, who retired from the role in August after almost 20 years. I had the pleasure of working with Noelene for over a decade. Her leadership and the strong team she built around her enabled the city to positively grow. She also gave sage advice without fear or favour. She leaves a strong legacy and I will miss her counsel and wish her the very best in her future endeavours. Timo Karnath, Cr Andrew Munroe and Mitchell Klassen from TCK Solar.

Councillors, consultants, Council officers and the community reference group working on the strategic study ‘The Future of Box Hill’ have invested significant effort. I am thankful for the honest and direct input from so many in the community. The challenges we face are now well defined and the solutions and options available, from both a planning scheme and broader social context, will continue to be refined with community consultation.

Meals on Wheels One of the many support services provided by Council, Meals on Wheels is managed by Council staff and delivered by staff and approximately 110 dedicated volunteers. It currently supplies approximately 65,000 chilled and frozen meals per year and operates from distribution centres at the Nunawading Senior Citizens Centre, Silver Grove, and at the Box Hill Senior Citizens Centre. This is a great service and assists many residents to live independently in their own homes. Quest Burwood East

They make our community healthier, stronger, more socially connected and our area a great place to live.

It was my absolute pleasure to welcome Quest Burwood East to this part of our city. Located on the previous Crown Coaches site, Mahoneys Road and Burwood Hwy corner, it is a great addition to providing local apartment hotel accommodation. Franchise owner Kris Marinakis is very community minded and continues to be involved in our Whitehorse Business Group, which provides many opportunities for business in our municipality.

I thank and congratulate all.

Until next time, Bill

vmembers of our local Rotary Clubs give to our community.

I was delighted to host a meal for the homeless surrounded by my wonderful “Local Leaders” team.

Lions Club changes name

Whether it is a Saturday sausage sizzle, school event or fundraising for a charity, Rotarians have a strong presence in our local area.

Mitcham Community Meal (MCM) runs every Sunday night at 6pm out of All Saints Church in Mitcham. My team combined Presidents of Mitcham-based sports teams and the MD of Mitcham’s largest business, Yarra Valley Water. Together with team members from the sports clubs and my own son, we prepared, cooked and served a warming and nutritious three course Italian meal for 40 guests. The brainchild of Ben and Jane Frawley, MCM assists those most vulnerable in our community by providing a weekly meal as well as blankets, personal care items and food parcels.

The Lions Club of Blackburn North recently changed its name to Blackburn Lions Club. The Club also welcomed new president Ken Lindorff. To enquire about becoming a member, visit http://blackburn.vic.lions.org.au

I was very proud to have been invited, some years ago, to be an honorary member of Mont Albert and Surrey Hills (MASH) Rotary Club and over the years I have witnessed the huge time commitment and passion they put into the role. I feel exhausted just reading their weekly newsletter which lists all their activities! I always look forward to the annual changeover event when the new President is inducted for the forthcoming year. This year's President is Anne Teese who I believe has been with MASH since its inception. I have no doubt she will do a fabulous job and probably need a holiday at the end! Shia Smart, a previous MASH President, is now the District Governor. Congratulations to all the new Presidents of our local Rotary Clubs and best wishes for a productive 2019-2020 year. Whitehorse Sporting Clubs We have a diverse range of sporting clubs in our area which cater for all ages and all levels of expertise. In the last decade we have seen a huge growth in female participation as well as an increase in younger members. While we have our elite sporting clubs, we also have clubs that attract family involvement. Sporting clubs are not just a means of competing and staying fit, they also have a huge social benefit. We are now reaching the end of the winter season for various sports and many will be competing in the finals. I wish all our local clubs a successful end to the season. Cr Ellis with Anne Teese. New president of MASH rotary.

Out and About It’s been a great pleasure to attend so many events and meetings in the last month. Here’s a snapshot: I unveiled the Artist in Schools Mural at St. John’s Primary School in Mitcham and also helped unveil the Peace Pole located outside the Uniting Church in Nunawading. I attended Rotary Club of Nunawading’s Mid-Winter Christmas Cabaret, Whitehorse Historical Society AGM, Women in Business luncheons with Emma Welsh from Emma and Tom’s healthy foods and Jessica Rowe AM, journalist, author, TV presenter and advocate for mental health. I attended functions at Mitcham Football Club, Heathmont Jets and the annual Women of the Eastern Football League dinner. I was guest speaker at the Vermont Cancer Fundraising Group. I attended the National Tree day at Nicoll Park and Antonio Park, the 2019 Parkland Community Forum and the Walk to End Homelessness around Ringwood Lake.
