Nunawading Hub
Nunawading Community Hub – A Place to Form New Friendships The new Nunawading Community Hub being built on the former Nunawading Primary School site on Springvale Road is specially designed to foster friendships and enable community spirit to flourish. With construction expected to be completed by mid-2020, it’s not long before the community will be able to participate in a diverse range of artistic, dance, sporting and leisure pursuits on offer by the community groups operating out of the hub. Council’s Meals on Wheels service will also be based at the hub. Each week, community
volunteers will collect approximately 1200 pre-packed meals from the hub and distribute them to more than 300 Whitehorse residents. There will also be opportunities for Meals on Wheels recipients to eat their meal in the communal dining area of the hub. This will foster social interactions and friendships among Whitehorse’s older residents. Tips to Help Your Child Transition to Secondary School Moving from primary to secondary school, or high school, is a big transition. It can be a time full of fun, excitement and new experiences, but it can also be challenging or worrying for many children. Here’s four tips to help your child feel supported: ■
■
■
■
Adjusting to change takes time, so be prepared for ups and downs. If things don’t stabilise after the first term, talk to your child’s teacher in the first instance. Remind your child that it’s normal to feel nervous about starting something new. Try to make sure your child eats well, gets plenty of physical activity and gets plenty of sleep. Stay calm - if you’re calm and reassuring you’ll give your child more confidence that she can get through the tough parts of starting high school.
Your child’s transition to secondary school is a big change for you too. Your relationship with your child’s primary school might be ending, and you’re likely to have a different sort of relationship with your child’s secondary school. Don’t be surprised to find that your child doesn’t want you to be as visible at his secondary school as you might have been during the primary years. Remember that they still need your support outside of school, and that it’s all part of the way they develop greater independence. Sourced from: Raising Children Network

THEATRE Judy Australia 1964 Friday 27 March 8pm Saturday 28 March 8pm Sunday 29 March 2pm
Legendary entertainer Judy Garland came to Australia in 1964 and experienced the triumph and tragedy that epitomised her life. In Sydney, her performances thrilled the 10,000-strong capacity crowds. In Melbourne, her event was a disaster. Alcohol, fatigue and a lifetime of personal problems had taken a heavy toll. Liane Keegan takes us on a journey that recreates one of the most controversial episodes in Australian entertainment history backed by a seven-piece showband.

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll
Friday 2 October 8pm Saturday 3 October 2pm and 8pm
Friday 3 April 8pm Saturday 4 April 2pm and 8pm
Ray Lawler’s much-loved tale of two Queensland cane cutters and their Melbourne barmaid girlfriends triumphed at its 1955 premiere. The characters and their dilemmas are so true, so humorous and so poignant. For 16 years the cane cutters have worked the punishing routine in the sugar cane fields. This summer everything is different. This ‘off-season’ will prove challenging for them all as truths are told and lives unravel. Grace Under Pressure
Health professionals devote their lives to caring for us, but how do we care for them? Can a doctor or nurse give a patient the best possible care if he or she hasn’t slept for days? What if they are also being bullied or sexually harassed at work? What if they complain about having to work excessive hours, but are told to suck it up? How do they cope with the pressure? Based on hours of in-depth interviews with doctors and nurses, Grace Under Pressure is a surprising, intimate and deeply moving theatre experience that reveals these hidden stories.

prize-winning ballroom dancers. Interspersed with ballroom dancing by a younger couple, who represent not only Peg and Cliff in their glory days, but also their romantic, idealised view of themselves, this is great comedy and pathos in the exploration of ‘ordinary’ lives.
Meet Occi Byrne, illegitimate child from the Catholic West of Ireland. For all his flawed humanity, Occi is a symbol of hope; an unlikely hero who faces insurmountable odds and never gives up. This exhilarating journey is tragic, tender and uproariously funny - the story of a lost soul in search of a home.
Unfolding like a puzzle to be solved and told through the interconnected stories of two families over four generations, this intricate, multilayered story explores betrayal, abandonment, destruction, forgiveness and love; where damage to the planet serves as a metaphor for the damage inflicted from generation to generation.

Congratulations to our Australia Day Award winners and nominees who were all very worthy and make great contributions to our community.
I hope everyone is having a great start to 2020 – Council is officially back in full swing!
Supporting our community through the bushfire crises.
Recently a Central Ward resident, Judy, wrote to me after observing Council workers clearing debris from a drain outside her house. She emphasised the importance of residents maintaining their gutter at home. During rain events a lot of debris can be washed into drains.
It is that time of the year again; Councillors and officers are currently working through the 2020/2021 budget process. More information and community engagement opportunities to follow soon, so stay tuned.
If we can all collect bark and leaves, particularly during the heavy fall times, to keep our gutters clean it would reduce the occurrence of blockages in our storm water pits. Cars may be parked on the street when the street sweeper comes by so it cannot always fully clear the gutters. Above: A resident suggested you can help by removing leaf debris from nature strips and storm water pits.
Emergency Services We have watched and been challenged by emergencies over the summer months. I would like to acknowledge the dedication of our Whitehorse SES unit that has provided active support in rural areas during the recent fires whilst still supporting us all in emergencies locally.

Whitehorse has one of the lowest crime rates in Victoria, and we hope to continue fostering a safer, welcoming and resilient community. Chinese New Year Celebrations I was also in attendance at the Ping-Pong-a-Thon, Carols with Box Hill Community Choir at Box Hill Central and celebrations hosted by our local Asian communities to celebrate start of the Lunar New Year. It’s always fantastic to see such initiatives that bring the community – people from all different backgrounds and walks of life – together.
I would like to begin this month’s column by offering my support and deepfelt empathy to all affected by the disastrous bushfires burning across our great country. Aussies are tough and will stand together through this tragedy, however, farmers need funds to replenish their livestock and replace valuable topsoil to enable them to replant their crops. Our beautiful wildlife has been decimated and will need funding for many years to come. My sincere and heartfelt thanks to all the firies. Graduation Ceremonies, Festivals and Functions Towards the end of last year, I attended several Christmas functions including at Vermont South Learning Centre, Heatherdale Community Action Group and Bungalook Nursery. I also attended the Mitcham Primary School Grade 6 Graduation and was extremely honoured to pack and deliver Christmas hampers for Uniting East Burwood. What a very rewarding experience that was! They do such a fantastic job every year and it was great to be able to help.
2020 marks the Year of the Golden Rat – may it bring happiness, good health and prosperity to you all.
The commitment of these volunteers through searing heat events, fires and storms should be recognised by all and we are most thankful to them. Upcoming Events
The Opening Doors Graduation Ceremony provided an amazing eye opener into how people deal with their issues with Opening Doors just simply ‘opening doors’ by providing guidance, social inclusion and friendship.
Looking forward, our next Swing Pop Boom! event series kicks off with a free concert, 'The Women of the 60s', on 1 March at Box Hill Town Hall. Call the Box Office on 9262 6555 quickly to reserve your free ticket.
So far this year I have attended the Korean Lunar New Year Festival and spent some time at Terrara Park watching children participate in the Learn to Ride day.
Then we have Shake At The Lake on 22 March with an energetic afternoon of jazz, soul and rock n’ roll, sharing picnics and dancing. Note Moonlight Movie screening of The Secret Life of Pets 2 on 27 March. Above: Cr Stennett and Cr Liu with participants of the Ping-Pong-a-Thon.
Best wishes to all for a safe, healthy and happy New Year. Above: Cr Carr packing hampers for Uniting East Burwood.

Work is well underway on the Budget preparations for 2020/2021.
It's always a pleasure to see so many residents enjoy the annual Australia Day concert.
I thank all of the people who made contact with me in response to my community letter I distributed over the Christmas break to provide ideas on areas Council can improve services.
Congratulations to those people who were awarded Whitehorse Australia Day Awards. This year we cancelled the fireworks display, out of respect for the people affected by the bushfire emergency across the country, but instead donated the cost of the fireworks $15,000 to the Red Cross. I would like to thank the emergency service workers and volunteers such as the SES, and the Red Cross for their amazing efforts during this crisis.
I have considered all of your views seriously. If you haven’t contacted me, there is still time to do so. Whitehorse Festive Season I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. This year, Whitehorse City Council is hosting the Global Fiesta on 15 March 2020. Further, Council also supported Chinese New Year which was held on 1 February 2020 at Box Hill Mall. I encourage you to consider attending the festivals as many activities are free.

Community Briefs Whitehorse Farmers’ Market Where: Whitehorse Centre, rear of 379-397 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading When: Second Sunday of the month, 8am-1pm
Organised and managed by the Whitehorse Rotary Group, the Whitehorse Farmers’ Market provides the community with direct access to fresh farm-sourced and organic food products and gives suppliers a local venue for business. The market has more than 60 stalls selling seasonal produce including fruit, vegetables and meats through to bread, cakes, pasta and eggs. The whole community receives a range of economic, social and health benefits from the market with a commitment by Rotary to put all the funds they raise towards community projects in Whitehorse. The market takes place within the parking area of the Whitehorse Centre.
Walker Park Pavilion Redevelopment Council has been working steadily on the $3.5m redevelopment of the pavilion at Walker Park in Nunawading. I would like to thank the Federal Government and State Government for their significant contributions to this project. The outcome will be a fantastic pavilion with female-friendly facilities that will meet current and future needs. I would also like to thank the Mitcham Cricket Club and Mitcham Football Club for their patience during disruption to their normal operations while this work takes place.

Cycling Tracks
Heatherdale Reserve Pavilion
Whitehorse has some fantastic off-road shared paths as well as a great network of on-road cycle routes. Many of the off-road shared paths follow creeks and parklands, providing a great way to connect with nature. Some of the most popular bike routes include Gardiners Creek Trail in Burwood, through the Gardiners Creek Reserve near Deakin University and past the Box Hill Golf Club; and Fulton Rd drain path which is on Orchard Grove Reserve in Blackburn South. The Whitehorse TravelSmart Map highlights many of the off-road shared paths and on-road cycling routes; alternatively selecting the ride option on google maps is a good way to find a cycling path in Whitehorse.
Councillor Cutts and I have been working with the stakeholders of the sports pavilion at Heatherdale Reserve, to develop a concept plan for a complete redevelopment of the pavilion. I would like to thank the Federal Member for Deakin for the pre-election commitment of $2m towards the redevelopment which, if adopted by Council, will cost around $5.7m.

Nunwading Community Hub Council is continuing to construct the Nunawading Community Hub on the former Nunawading Primary School site. Part of the work is restoring the 1927 heritage-listed original primary school at the front of the site which will be incorporated into the design and the community uses available. I am told that the hub will be completed around the middle of this year.
