Support Our Traders Council is encouraging our community to support our Box Hill and surrounding traders due to recent anxiety around the impact of coronavirus. Council is aware that traders in Box Hill have seen a downturn in trade as a result which is causing additional stress. However, Council welcomes and trusts the expert advice of Victoria’s Chief Medical Officer. Dr Brett Sutton has said that the situation in Victoria is significantly different from China. For three decades Blackburn resident Anthea Swann has been giving her time to make the Blackburn Creeklands a better place for all to enjoy.

My ongoing commitment to greater local amenity achieved another objective with the completion of the renovation of the Gawler Chain Reserve in Mont Albert North.

Whitehorse continues to ensure that all food premises meet high standards. Our Environmental Health Officers conducted 815 Food Safety Assessments during 2019 as a means of evaluating hygiene standards in food premises.

Anthea, a member of the Blackburn Creeklands Advisory Committee was recognised with a Community Achievement Award as part of the 2020 Australia Day Awards and I give my congratulations to her and the rest of the committee for their ongoing work within our city. In Central Ward there are several parkland advisory committees where the community work with Council in terms of advice and practical working bees for rubbish collection, plantings etc. While you don’t need to necessarily join the committee, in addition to the Creeklands we have Blackburn Lake, Wandinong Sanctuary and Cootamundra Walk and all provide opportunities to volunteer to improve our natural environment. Parkrun While there is no parkrun within Central Ward I know a number of our residents participate in the Gardiners Creek parkrun adjacent to Deakin University. Celebrating its second anniversary in January, this free volunteer run event takes place at 8am every Saturday. So why not go online, register, get a barcode and come along. At the first February run (you can walk the 5km if you wish) Federal Member for Chisholm Gladys Liu registered and participated for the first time. While I did finish a dozen places ahead of her this time, I suspect she will be catching me soon. Below: Cr Andrew Munroe and Anthea Swann.

Better parks that are more useful to more people improves appearance, amenity, and enhance our property values. Hundreds of trees and plants and LED solar park lights have been installed. These lights are cheaper, safer, faster to install, less disruptive to the park and offer some great features over traditional cabled lights. I will remain focused on harnessing new technology to deliver cost effective, improved local amenity. Eram Park I am pleased Yarra Valley Water abandoned plans to build a recycled water facility in Eram Park. I sincerely thank all residents who joined the campaign to stop it. Be assured I will always stand and fight with the community to protect our open spaces. Community Fundraising The local response to catastrophic fires reinforced my pride in our area. Box Hill Miniature Railway teamed up with Balwyn Rotary to raise more than $5,000. Surrey Park Swimming organised a pool party in Blackburn South, local people are knitting pouches for orphaned wildlife, donations and deliveries were organised and locals are giving their time to rebuild farm fences. Box Hill Traders The novel coronavirus has caused anxiety and we’ve seen reduced trade in Box Hill. I understand that newer migrants from China may be worried because of previous experience with SARS or rumours on WeChat. However, I believe we can trust our experts. There has never been a better time to shop, eat and visit Box Hill. The food is delicious and the parking easy. Please get up to Box Hill and support our local traders. North East Link Whitehorse and three other councils have joined to take legal action on the North East Link. Council did not take this decision lightly. We understand that road infrastructure is important. But the project in its current form represents an unfair burden on the Whitehorse community. Council remains hopeful of achieving a better outcome for our community.

Recently, I had the pleasure of awarding Whitehorse businesses with their 2019 Food Premises of the Year Award. Congratulations to Class 1 winners, Victoria Grange Aged Care-Vermont South and Community Group winners, Livingstone Primary School. Sri Lanka Celebrations Sri Lanka celebrated their 72nd Anniversary of Independence in Box Hill Town Hall recently. It was a pleasure to attend and be part of the festivities. We can all learn so much from our rich multicultural communities in Whitehorse. Did you know Sri Lanka donated 4 tonnes of tea to assist the recent bushfire relief efforts? Australia Day Awards The Whitehorse Australia Day Awards are always a great occasion and congratulations to all the winners. A local resident who was a well deserving recipient of a Community Achievement Award was Margaret Rackham. A “quiet achiever” Margaret has served our community for over 42 years. A founding member of Nunawading Community Gardens, an active member of the Vermont Garden Club and a core member of the Friends of the Healesville Freeway Reserve is just a snapshot of a remarkable contribution to our community. Congratulations Margaret! Photo caption: Cr Bennett with award winner Margaret Rackham.

February is the month when the sporting clubs hold events in support of the McGrath Foundation which funds breast cancer research.

Everyone, everywhere is doing their bit to help with the awful tragedy of the recent bushfires.

This year I attended two events on the same afternoon – Mont Albert Cricket club and also Heatherdale Cricket club. It was great to see so many women, dressed in pink, celebrating such a great cause with a glass of bubbly. International Women's Day For many years Whitehorse has been celebrating this day. This year will be the 100th anniversary of the first time that a woman was elected to council. While it is something that we take for granted in 2020, in 1920 it was a significant event for Mary Rogers.

It has been heartwarming to attend so many bushfire fundraisers recently. The family event at Walker Park in Nunawading was an outstanding success with 500-600 people enjoying an open air screening of Toy Story 4. The KBH Brumbies in Mont Albert North kick started the 2020 hockey season with a 2 hour round robin of Hockey 6s, with three umpires (including my son) volunteering their time. The fundraisers for the McGrath Foundation at Heatherdale and Mont Albert Reserves are also wonderful examples of the community coming together for worthy causes. Walker Park Pavilion Update State Member for Ringwood Dustin Halse recently announced $65,000 for a fit-out at the pavilion. This is great news for the tenant clubs! This $3.6+ million redevelopment has seen financial support from all levels of government, Cricket Victoria and AFL Victoria. It is hoped that construction will be completed prior to the football season opening in April! Pet Registrations due 10 April Please avoid up to $330 per pet in late fees by paying your pet registrations by the due date of 10 April. This date and the late fee are State legislated and does not change from year to year. Registration notices will come out from all Victorian Councils to pet owners this month.

5-Star Food Safe Program

Find out the other local businesses that have achieved excellent star ratings by visiting ehealth.whitehorse.vic.gov.au

The recent exhibition highlighted the works of Professor Chijian Ye who trained in Guangzou Province but now lives and teaches in Whitehorse. His silk and oil painting were beautiful and along with his sculptures, demonstrated his extraordinary talent. The Artspace is open 6 days a week and is well worth a visit. I am already looking forward to the next exhibition.
