The UN’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is on Friday 15 June. This is an opportunity for communities across Victoria to honour their older people and uphold their right to live in safety, with dignity and respect. WEAAD also shines a light on the fact that many older people experience mistreatment from people close to them, often their family members. This is known as elder abuse.

June Council Meetings
Whitehorse Civic Centre
Special Committee Meeting Tuesday 12 June at 8pm
Elder abuse is any act which causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust, such as a family member or friend. The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect.
Ordinary Council Meeting Monday 25 June at 7pm
Elder abuse is vastly under-reported but the World Health Organisation estimates that up to 10 per cent of older people worldwide are affected.
These meetings are held in the Council Chamber at Whitehorse Civic Centre and they are open to the public, unless Council resolves to consider an item ‘in camera’ (confidentially).
Warning signs of elder abuse include an older person seeming fearful, anxious or isolated. There may be injuries, or an absence of personal care. Look out for disappearance of possessions, unexplained financial transactions, and changes to a will, property title or other documents.

Just as respectful relationships within families help prevent family violence, respect for older family members is a primary protection against elder abuse. Older people can reduce the risk of elder abuse by making sure their financial, medical, legal and other affairs are in order. They must also be empowered to recognise signs of elder abuse, and speak out. More information Seniors Rights Victoria 1300 368 821 www.seniorsrights.org.au Council is encouraging the community to wear purple on Friday 15 June in recognition of the day.

BUILDING INTERGENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
W
hitehorse City Council has partnered with Starfish Early Learning Centre in a program to bring together kinder-aged children with seniors from Mountainview Cottage’s Tuesday Treasures Group.
Intergenerational programs help participants build a sense of personal and social identity while encouraging tolerance. Children develop communication skills and positive attitudes towards ageing. For older people, intergenerational programs can help them to remain engaged and improve memory. Mountainview Cottage is now in the process of establishing a program with local grade 6 students who will assist older residents to record their life stories. This program will run every four to six weeks to allow participants the opportunity to further develop their relationships and enjoy each other’s company. Mountainview Cottage delivers social support programs funded by the Australian Government under the Commonwealth Home Support Program. Prestigious award for innovative business program W
hitehorse City Council has been recognised for its extremely successful Tertiary Business Skills Program at the prestigious National Local Government Innovation Awards.
Whitehorse Mayor Councillor Andrew Davenport said Whitehorse took the silver medal for the program, which teams students from Deakin University with local Whitehorse businesses in a competitive 12 week internship. “Council’s Investment and Economic Development department was very proud to receive the award for putting this successful program together,” Cr Davenport said. The National Local Government Innovation Awards celebrate the efforts and achievements of local government projects that focus on providing services in a more efficient and useful way and who have demonstrated an efficient use of resources.
“These awards recognise best value and practice, with finalists assessed on their outstanding innovation, effort and outcomes,” Cr Davenport said. "Judging criteria included the ability of projects to positively impact Council business objectives and assist other councils through sharing their results and experiences. “This year, the Whitehorse Tertiary Business Skills Program will celebrate 10 years of collaboration between Whitehorse City Council, Deakin University, local businesses and students – a milestone we can all be proud of." The program has successfully supported, developed and marketed local businesses and has helped our key education institutions to play a larger role in local business development. Cardinia Shire Council and the City of Greater Dandenong were also award winners. More information www.wbiz.com.au

Dealing with illegal dumping T
he illegal dumping of rubbish and mulch across the municipality costs Council thousands of dollars in removal and disposal expenses each year. In addition to being costly, dumped household garbage and mulch on roadsides and in parks are eyesores and can cause health problems. Illegal dumping is more prominent in areas of high tenancy. To help landlords, real estate agents and owners’ corporations educate their tenants about illegal dumping, Council has produced videos on how to correctly dispose of rubbish using Council’s services. Available in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Farsi and Vietnamese, the videos are available on Council’s website at www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/Waste-Videos.html You can also request a copy from Council’s Waste Education Officer. To assist Council to investigate illegal dumping, residents witnessing illegal dumping are asked to record the vehicle registration (if it is safe to do so) as well as the date and time the rubbish was dumped and contact Council’s Customer Service on 9262 6333. Those found responsible for dumping rubbish could face a fine of up to $4880. More information www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/Litter.html
KEEPING OUR STREETS CLEAN
C
ouncil’s autumn street sweeping program will continue in June and July this year, ensuring the municipality’s 135 streets with heavy leaf falls are swept clean. The annual program ensures these heavy leaf streets are swept at least once every fortnight. Other streets are swept once every four weeks, dependent on leaf volume and weather conditions.
DON'T DUMP SHOPPING TROLLEYS
A
bandoned shopping trolleys can pose a hazard to pedestrians and road users and are unsightly in parks and reserves. They can also have an environmental impact if they are dumped in drains and waterways.
Council officers will impound any trolleys found on Council land and owners can claim their trolley/s upon payment of a release fee.
Report abandoned trolleys
For Woolworths (including Big W and Dan Murphys) Log on to http://trolleytracker.com.au/Report, download their app or phone 1800 641 497.
A
s winter takes hold, Council reminds residents that cold weather brings specific safety challenges around the home. City of Whitehorse can be prone to storms and high winds during winter, so it is wise to make sure all loose objects in the garden or attached to the house are secured. Fire safety inside the house should be a key priority during winter. Never leave candles unattended or near anything flammable, such as curtains or bed clothes. When drying clothes inside, make sure they are well away from any heaters to minimise the chance of them igniting.
Residents are encouraged to park their vehicles on their properties during the heavy left sweeping cycle to assist with the cleaning of their streets. More information www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/Street-Sweeping.html
Residents living in Whitehorse’s 135 heavy leaf streets have received information from Council in their letterboxes detailing the autumn street sweeping schedule for their particular street. The schedule for specific streets is also available on Council’s website.
Residents are encouraged to report abandoned trolleys to the trolley owner.
LOOK AFTER YOURSELF THIS WINTER
Sweeping for 2018 commences on the weeks of 11 June, 25 June, 9 July and 23 July.
Fire safety tips • Extinguish all open fires and turn off all portable heaters before leaving the home or going to sleep. • Ensure all your appliances and electrical outlets are in good working order, with no frayed wires. Don’t overload electrical outlets and remove cords when not in use. • Make sure fire alarms are working and installed on every level of your home. Check them regularly to ensure the batteries are working. • It is also a good idea to have an emergency plan and ensure that everyone in the home knows or has access to emergency numbers in case something does go wrong. “I am fitting back into my non-maternity clothes, my whole family is eating a more nutritionally balanced diet, I re-learnt how to swim and I think the most important thing I gained from the 9WC is a changed outlook on myself, nutrition and exercise. How do you sum up the amazing achievements of the 55 Aqualink members who took part in Aqualink’s 9 Week Challenge (9WC)? Amazing and truly inspirational! The participants each committed themselves to a healthier approach to their lifestyle by changing exercise and eating habits for nine weeks. Participant goals throughout the challenge included weight loss, increased fitness, increased strength, nutritional knowledge, support from professional personal trainers, and achieving their fitness goals. This diverse group of participants formed a strong community that enjoyed exercising together, pushed each other and supported each other to succeed. They enjoyed learning the keys to a balanced and nutritional healthy eating plan and effective training techniques. Cooking demonstrations by MasterChef contestant Jacqui Ackland revealed the secrets to healthy, nutritious and easy-to-cook meals at home.
At our first PT session, I thought, ‘I can’t do this. I’ll never be stronger.’ But my PT’s enthusiasm and the positivity from the other participants and trainers got me through those first scary weeks. The nutrition seminar changed the way I viewed the 9WC. I stopped seeing it as something that was just for nine weeks, and started seeing it as a kick-start to a healthy life. Another challenge for me was nutrition (I was addicted to chocolate and cake and sweets). I was initially aiming to just cut everything ‘bad’ out for nine weeks, but that changed after the nutrition seminar. I stopped seeing food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and focused on what was in it and how it fuelled my body (now I eat like an adult instead of a sugar-crazed child!). We eat better as a family and that’s probably the best thing I’ve gained from the 9WC: my family’s health. You only get one life, make it a long, happy, healthy one.”
The 9 Week Challenge is an annual event and a weekly Super Saturday session was added this year, allowing all members to work out together in a fun group environment. Read on for the amazing achievements of our top challenge winners!

“My physio advised me to do the 9WC because my body was a wreck from a car accident. I started off doing the bare minimum and I couldn’t do planks or push ups. But as the challenge progressed I got more confident in my body to workout, started doing everything and pushed myself.” These are just a few of the truly inspirational stories from the 9WC community. The program is all about changing lives. Congratulations to all of our members. To register your interest for the 2019 9WC, or for personalised assistance through personal training, email enquiry@aqualink.com.au

Central Ward Forum A Central Ward forum, held on 2 May, was attended by about 30 residents. Some great discussions about the proposed budget, planning challenges and current projects ensued. Thank you to those who gave up their time to attend and participate in the discussions.
Waste and Recycling
New technology
Since China’s ban on taking mixed recyclables, waste processing discussions are topical. I recently travelled around Melbourne looking at local reprocessing of recyclables by companies often operating as social enterprises. It was a fascinating opportunity to see achievements, such as felt tip pens made from old inkjet printer cartridges and labelled for corporate advertising. Another opportunity is for households to recycle their soft plastic packaging such as biscuit packets, shopping bags etc in recycling pods available at most Safeway and Coles supermarkets. The plastic is chopped up and used in road base which prevents the plastic getting into our waterways and environment. I am now separating and taking soft plastic packaging to be recycled.
I attended the Australian Smart Communities Association conference to explore ways for technology to improve the liveability of our cities. The NBN will gradually come to Whitehorse over the next 12-18 months and it brings opportunities and challenges, as does the 5G network when it finally arrives.
the proposed budget includes strategic initiatives to review the vision of Box Hill Metropolitan Activity Centre and a transport study of central Box Hill – both of which I have been strongly advocating for. Some of the capital works include smart bins, investigating better lighting in Box Hill Mall, a number of key asset improvements to sporting and community facilities across our municipality and construction of the Harrow Street Car Park.
School students, under the guidance of artist Terry McKenna.
the community and other stakeholders on improving universal accessibility.
Other highlights
As your elected representative, I am dedicated to ensuring that our community is a safe, healthy, vibrant and sustainable one.
Other events I was pleased to see the 4th Annual Smashers Badminton Open 2018 tournament. The Sunday Smashers play each Sunday at the Melbourne Badminton Centre in Blackburn North. The tournament was very busy and provided opportunities for juniors and seniors at various levels. Right: soft plastic recycling pod.

Budget 2018-19
Matsudo Week
The proposed 2018-19 budget has been on exhibition for public comment – thank you to those who have provided feedback. Council will now further consider these submissions and adoption of the proposed budget ($201 million) later this month. For the Elgar Ward, I am pleased to say that
I attended a number of Matsudo Week events celebrating the Sister City relationship between Whitehorse and Matsudo in Japan. Some of the highlights included Green Tree Day, Boite Matsudo Week Concert, Japan Festival and the Matsudo Week Exhibition, featuring works by Koonung Secondary
Women in Whitehorse Art Collection: Meet the Artists – I had the pleasure of meeting a number of local artists whose work featured in the recent exhibition.
All the best and until next time, Tina
I participated in a number of forums including community safety with Victoria Police, elder abuse seminar for our culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community, North-East Link, Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) smart cities and energy. I also took a walk around Box Hill with residents who use wheelchairs and their families, to discuss accessibility to/from Box Hill Mall. I will continue to work with

In May, it was my pleasure to support the dedicated team of volunteers at Bungalook Nursery by attending their Biggest Morning Tea, a fundraising event for the treatment of cancer. Their members are to be commended for holding this event every year. Also in May, my husband and I went to see Nancye Hayes and Todd McKenney in
Bosom Buddies. Wow, what a wonderful surprise this was. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t the entertainment and hilarious comedy I was presented with from these two consummate performers. From the first moment to the last, I was immersed in their world. Absolutely mesmerising! Last month, I also had the outstanding honour of launching two wonderful art exhibitions. The first was John Street: Painting with Light at the Box Hill Town Hall and the second was the exhibition by Maria Radun, Artist in Residence, at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre. Very different exhibitions, however both presented by extremely talented artists. If you can manage to visit either or both of these exhibitions, you won’t be
disappointed. The camera (pictured) was hand built by Mr Street and demonstrated how far ahead of his time he was in using light to create images in camera on very large format film. A remarkable demonstration of creative talent. Other events attended were the annual Green Tree Day in recognition of the long standing Matsudo Sister City relationship; Yooralla 100 years of supporting people with a disability; Victorian Young Achievement Award with sincere congratulations to our own Lisa Tran for reaching the finals; Whitehorse Women’s Forum where attendees were entertained by three very informed speakers on the benefits of women’s sport; Volunteer recognition function where long serving volunteers were
congratulated and thanked for their selfless dedication; Women in Business Luncheon with Kate Austin and Sorry Day at the Nangnak Gardens. Until next time.

Matsudo Week and Japan Festival On 11 May, the Consul-General of Japan and I planted a tree at Box Hill Town Hall to celebrate the 47th anniversary of the Whitehorse Matsudo Sister City relationship. Following the tree planting, we made a Skype call to the Mayor of Matsudo and answered queries from a local school. It was the first time the
call was projected for the public to experience. Later that day, the ConsulGeneral of Japan and I attended a concert held at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre, which featured traditional Japanese instruments. On 20 May, I attended the opening ceremony of the Japan Festival at Box Hill Town Hall where I was able to experience a tea ceremony. It was a pleasing way to conclude Matsudo Week. Australian/Indian Business Forum I was pleased to attend the Australian/ Indian Business Forum 2018 which was hosted at Deakin University in May. His Excellency Dr Ajay Gondane, India High Commissioner to Australia, gave the opening speech, and I was particularly interested in the contribution made
by Molina Asthana, Principal Solicitor, Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office. Bennettswood Pavilion On 7 April, Mr Graham Watt MP, Member for Burwood, and I attended the Emmaus St Leo's Old Collegians Football Club Celebration at the new Bennettswood Pavilion, which is now available for community use. It was pleasing to see that a new women’s team has formed to take advantage of the new facilities at Bennettswood, and I look forward to seeing the results of their first season.

I attended a residents meeting in Box Hill recently, where two guest speakers from the North East Link Authority presented on the latest information about the proposed project – the state government's preferred "Option A", which is a link from the M80 Ring Road to the Eastern Freeway. Golf the winter away
S
tay dry and warm while enjoying some golf this winter on the driving range at Morack Public Golf Course.
Winter is a great time to practise your golf skills, especially at the driving range’s undercover, well-lit facilities. Players can practise and learn new skills in all weather conditions and the fact that it’s dark by 5pm doesn’t cut short their time on the range. Morack’s driving range is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from dawn to 8pm, Tuesday from 9am-8pm and weekends and public holidays from dawn to 7pm. More information 9801 4479 www.morackgolf.com.au
The driving range is also perfect for: Beginner golfers Taking up the game for the first time? The driving range offers a costeffective entry into golf. The range is a relaxed and informal setting for beginners who might find the first steps on to a golf course intimidating. Morack offers group beginner clinics with a PGA professional, who can teach basic concepts and swing fundamentals. Corporate Groups The busy working week can make it hard for many people to find time to get in a round of golf. The driving range is a great way to participate in an organised group activity away from the office. Corporate groups can enjoy a coaching session with one of Morack’s PGA professionals, followed by an onsite barbecue.
CONNECTING THE COMMUNITY
G
iving back. Making friends. Strengthening the community. Learning new skills. These are just some of the reasons people give for why they volunteer. In our monthly profiles, learn more about some of our local volunteers and the rewarding work they do. Name: David Inglis Volunteer role: Committee member, Wandinong Sanctuary Advisory Committee.
COMMUNITY BRIEFS Congratulations to Aashna Shah and Thomas Yakubowski, Year 11 students from Box Hill High School, who were the Best Overall Team in the Model United Nations Assembly, which was held at the Victorian parliament house in May.
Right: Councillor Bill Bennett enjoying the driving range at Morack.
The team represented Jordan in the simulated United Nations event. They were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Forest Hill who will now support them in the National Contest in Canberra in August. The Rotary Club of Box Hill sponsored the runners-up from Presbyterian Ladies College.
What does your volunteering involve? I am involved in working bees at the sanctuary and the committee meets five times a year to plan the direction we want to go in and the things Council might do at the sanctuary. I was also the committee treasurer for many years. What made you interested in volunteering? I have always been green and into the bush. I did lots of bush walking in my early years and I can continue this interest in the bush on a small, local scale with the sanctuary.
Rotary District 9810 Governor Malcolm Chiverton with Model United Nations Assembly Best Overall Team, 2018.
The Pied Piper of Hamelin Whitehorse Orchestra presents The Pied Piper of Hamelin, a musical adventure for the young and young at heart. A full orchestra accompanies two narrators who tell the traditional story. Duration is approximately 50 minutes.
Concerts are on Saturday 2 June at 2pm and 3.30pm at Kingswood College, 355 Station Street, Box Hill. Bookings are available at the door or through www.whitehorseorchestra.org.au Tickets are $12 adults, $8 children, children under 2 years free.
What do you get out of your volunteering? I have always been interested in bird life and have seen the decline in birds due to loss of habitat and foxes. We can address this by, for example, leaving nesting hollows in trees and fallen trees in the sanctuary for parrots as they don’t build nests, but use hollows. Memorable moment in your volunteering journey? The biggest task the committee took on was the removal of onion weed. When we first got the property in the early 1970s it was overgrown with it and it took 25 years to clear it. We still get the odd bit popping up but we have an enthusiastic group of weeders to stay on top of it.
