West Yorkshire Golf Club of the Year 2019
Bingley St Ives Golf Club is one of the jewels in West Yorkshire’s golfing crown
T
he award-winning Bingley St Ives Golf Club was founded in 1931 originally as a nine hole layout. Extended to 18 holes in 1934, the course meanders through different settings for golf, switching between parkland, woodland and moorland surroundings.
With something for everyone, West Yorkshire is the ideal retreat for a golfing break with a wide variety of venues offering fantastic value for money.
As a testimony to the hard work of the management team and green keeping staff, the Bingley St Ives golf course is playable all-year-round and in fact, is as well presented in the winter as it is during the warmer months. The Bingley course was designed with instruction from legendary golf course architect, Dr Alister MacKenzie who has left many of his attributes on the course which can be see today, including tiered greens and a design that encompasses the nature of the landscape surrounding the golf course.
Over the years, the course have been further developed with input from leading names in the game, including Sir Nick Faldo, the late Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Canizares. Today, the Par 71 golf course measures 6,458 yards from the white tees and continues to be a true golfing test in set in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. When the club was privatised in 1990, work began on a clubhouse building. This was completed in 1994 and reflected the aesthetics of the historic buildings of the estate located nearby. The clubhouse was opened in 1994 by former Ryder Cup player, Mark James. The clubhouse building has evolved with the golf club and today is home to excellent member and visitor facilities including shower and locker rooms as well as the superbly-appointed Spike Bar and 19th Hole which offer a well-stocked bar service as well as daily menus.
The Spike bar is a hub of activity throughout the golfing season and features a full size snooker table and access to a large balcony which overlooked the 18th green – perfect for al fresco eating and drinking. Whilst, the spacious 19th Hole is packed with images and memorabilia donated to Bingley St. Ives by Matthew Fitzpatrick, current caddy to Lee Westwood having formerly carried the bag for Seve Ballesteros, Darren Clarke and Sergio Garcia amongst others. The clubhouse is also home to the Bingley St Ives Professional shop which stocks the latest clothing, equipment and accessories from some of the game’s leading brands. Led by Head Professional, Nigel Barber, the team offer expert tuition and advice with lessons bookable by both members and visitors to the golf club.
