English Society Golf Yearbook 2020

Welcome to the English Society Golf Yearbook Edition

An exciting year ahead With an exciting year of golf ahead, it will be interesting to see what happens on the fairways in 2020. Can Brookes blast his way to more major titles or will a resurgent Rory reclaim his golfing crown… perhaps Tiger will continue his phenomenal comeback trail? Or maybe 2020 will be the year another rookie will break through with the same impact as Jordan Spieth had at Augusta in 2014 when he finished runner-up to Bubba Watson in his debut appearance? With an action-packed calendar of golfing events from the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January to The Player’s Championship at TPC Sawgrass in March, golfers will be keeping up to date with the latest news and results through television and the internet. In other notable events, the 9th April will see the start of the Masters Championship at Augusta whilst nearer to home, the Irish Open takes place at Lahinch at the end of May. The US Open this year will be played at Winged Foot whilst, the 149th Open Championship will be played at Royal St. George in July. In a popular move, the British Masters comes to Close House in August 2020.

Whilst looking through the golfing calendar, it is difficult not to mention the Ryder Cup. Following the European team’s resounding victory at Le Golf National in France, the 2020 Ryder Cup will be competed on the Whistling Straights course in Wisconsin with viewers hoping another culminating week’s golf taking us back to the thriller at Medinah back in 2012, when Team Europe last won the Ryder Cup in the States. It is not only exciting times for the professional game. Club golfers will be working to emulate their heroes on the screen in mid week and weekend competitions up and down the country whilst an emphasis must definitely be placed on junior sections – getting young people in to golf. Your Golfer Magazine should be your first port of call when organising your next society outing, away day or golfing break with friends. The forthcoming quarterly issues of the magazine will contain course reviews of some of the most popular golf clubs in the country, as well as profiles of the best and most cost-effective golf courses in Great Britain.

Here’s to an enjoyable year’s golf in 2020!

Bentham Golf Course, Lancaster Bentham is an undulating parkland course that offers fantastic views of the surrounding area. A diamond of a golf course set in the Yorkshire Dales in the foothills of the Three Peaks, golf at Bentham dates back to 1922. In 1925 the golf course was founded as a nine hole course and by the early seventies the wooden clubhouse building on the original site was past its best and needed redevelopment - the new clubhouse building was erected in 1975 to meet the needs of the growing golf club membership. It wasn’t later until the mid-90s, when the nine-hole layout at Bentham Golf Course was extended to encompass eighteen fine golf holes falling in line with the other golf courses in the area. The club is not owned and managed by the Marshall family who have been at the helm since 2009. Since this time, the family have made significant investment which has seen many improvements to the clubhouse, teaching facilities and the course itself. Bentham Course now has a bright future ahead of it. The Bentham course layout is something that has been altered to offer a stern but fair challenge to all levels of golfer.

This coupled with majestic views from the fairways over Ingleborough, Pen-y-Ghent and Whernside as well as the inspiring backdrop of the fells of the Lake District – make Bentham a fantastic location for golf. In addition to the golf course, developments have also taken place to the club’s buildings. The clubhouse now offers a licensed bar and restaurant facilities meaning that Bentham can provide the perfect start, middle and end to your days golf! Food is served daily throughout the summer months in the refurbished clubhouse building from the ambient surroundings of the wonderful 1922 Bar & Kitchen. The golf club also caters for visiting parties through a variety or menus catering for all palates and pockets!

One of Country Durham’s finest parkland golf courses Founded in the 1920s, nestled along the south west edges of Castle Eden Dene, a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Castle Eden Golf Club was formally known as the Dene Golf Club and used solely by member of the local brewery. Have you ever imagined being able to drive a ball from one country to another??

Sounds fanciful I know, however, let me introduce you to a golf club that can offer just that and more. Sitting just south of Oswestry in Shropshire lies Llanymynech Golf Club, with Offas Dyke (the largest ancient monument following the border between England and Wales) running through the course Llanymynech offers an abundance of greenery and some of the most fantastic scenery you will find anywhere in the UK. Due to the fantastic drainage that this club has painstakingly maintained through its history, Llanymynech can provide golfers of all abilities a year round course that plays as well in the winter as it does in the summer. In fact Ian Woosnam first learnt to play golf here at the age of nine years old and Llanymynech still remains one of his favourite courses to play to this day. In fact the Woosnam family have got a long tradition with Llanymynech Golf Club with both Ian’s Mother and Father being previous captains and still have a firm association with it up to the present day. With 15 holes in Wales and 3 holes in England you are provided with the unique opportunity to drive off on the 4th hole in Wales and actually putt out on the same hole in England! Making Llanymynech Golf Club the only dual nationality golf course in Europe. The twelth hole (the highest point) on this fantastic yet challenging golf course offers stunning views of Shropshire and the Welsh border with a toposcope to point out the places of interest , making your golf experience as pleasurable as can be found in this part of the UK. A club member and past lady captain goes on to say we aim to provide great day’s golf and a friendly welcome on the course and in the clubhouse.
