Kilspindie Golf Club
One of Scotlands finest hidden gems Scotland’s rolling hills, stunning coastlines and dense parklands are known to hide some of the UK’s best golf courses; Kilspindie Golf Club is one of these. As one might expect from a traditional Scottish links, it lies immediately on the coast and is host to a range of wildlife including seals and migratory geese. The views here are particularly stunning; on a clear day you may well make out Edinburgh Castle, which lies less than an hour away by car. Without a doubt, this is one of a few courses for which it can said that its outstanding quality is matched by its outstanding beauty. Edinburgh is a city famed for its sense of humour, friendliness and inclusivity. With famous festivals, dormant volcanoes and world-renowned museums, the Scottish capital more than holds its own with the other great capitals of Europe. For a long weekend away, you would be hard pressed to find a city with as much culture, shopping and history as Edinburgh; this makes it the perfect city break for couples and golf societies alike. More locally to Kilspindie Golf Club, Aberlady nature reserve – one of the first of its kind in the area, has been dedicated to keeping this particular stretch of coast around Aberlady Bay untainted by human influence for over half a century.
The diverse wildlife, both animals and wild flowers, offer visitors a chance to really become acquainted with the beauty of the landscape, as well as a serenity that is all too seldom achieved on our busy modern lives. Kilspindie is reported to be the 35th oldest golf club in the world, instituted in 1867 and with between 27-28 thousand pairs of feet enjoying these links every year, the club’s success is testament to its lasting design and layout. It’s challenging but is a clear favourite of many who have played it, with quick greens and welldefined fairways. It is a club period of its history, even hosting an alternative Ryder Cup, with 12-man teams playing with pre-1930’s hickory shafted clubs Although the course has remained largely unchanged, the clubhouse has been expanding to deal with the demands of the modern golfer. Whilst maintaining its charm and personality; it still has its original “Locker Room and Bar”; the clubhouse is now able to cater for a range of events with style and comfort. The bar might be small but its stock is not, boasting an excellent array of beverages including over 80 different malt whiskies (although we recommend you spread these out over a few visits). Warmth and friendliness lie at the heart of this club, and such comments find their way into almost every review. Visitors pay the same as members for food and drink; it is clear that Kilspindie Golf Club wants to create an open community of golfers all of whom are drawn to the club by the same things; an incredible course in a stunning environment. It is little wonder that so many people are drawn back year after year and that Kilspindie is recognised locally, nationally and internationally as a hidden gem of Scotland.
Historic, Spectacula
“Kilspindie is one of Scotlands hidden treasures. A beautifully crafted golf course on the banks of the Firth of Forth it challenges golfers of every level. Short by modern standards this fair golf course is a lot of fun to play. Golf and nature meander side by side on this lovely links. A recommendation I never hesitate to provide. You won’t be sorry.” Andrew Coltart

Gullane Golf Club
Although officially established in 1882, golf has been played at Gullane for over 350 years and today, Gullane is one of Scotland’s most prestigious member’s clubs. Blessed with superb turf and a climate for all-year-round golf, visitors are welcome to take on the championship golf course whilst enjoying some of the most dramatic coastal views in golf.
The golf club offers a range of golfing experiences and has played a major role in the history of Scottish golf. Providing great golfing conditions in truly spectacular surroundings, the three golf courses of Gullane Links are laid out over prime seaside land and are simply know by the number reflecting their age: Gullane No.1 was founded in 1884 and has a long and celebrated history of national and international golf events. In fact, the No.1 course was selected as the host venue for the Aberdeen Investments Scottish Open and Ladies Scottish Open as recently as 2018.
Gullane No.2 was founded in 1898 and was designed by legendary golf course architect, Willie Park Jnr. The No.2 golf course at Gullane Links has been used for Scottish Open qualifying events. The baby of the three golf courses, Gullane No.3 was established in 1910 and was also designed by Willie Park Jnr. The shortest of the three golf courses, No.3 presents a wonderful test based on shot-making rather than power. Gullane Links has two clubhouse buildings, one for members and a second for visitors to Gullane Golf Club. Situated next to the 1st tee and adjacent to the professional shop, the member’s clubhouse reopened its doors in June 2015 following an eighteen month refurbishment.
An established and popular landmark on Gullane’s skyline where it has been placed for over one hundred years, the clubhouse is home to flexible, interlinked social spaces which have been created whist retaining its original charm and character. Opened in 1993, the visitors’ clubhouse is situated on the 1st tee of Gullane No.2 and No.3 courses and is home to all the facilities expected from a modern golf complex including a lounge bar overlooking the golf courses and comfortable dining facilities serving snacks, meals and an a la carte menu daily. Gullane Links even has its own museum located next to the club’s professional shop.

"The Members’ Clubhouse has been a landmark on Gullane’s skyline for nearly 100 years so it was imperative that any changes would not affect the look of the town,” said Gordon Simpson CMDip, the Club's Secretary. “Instead we wanted to retain the exterior of the clubhouse while revitalizing the interior to accommodate a busy, modern club with all of its demands. I am pleased to say this was achieved.” The 18-month project saw Gullane’s iconic clubhouse close to both members and the public while the extensive restoration work took place.

GABRIELLE MACDONALD
Born in Edinburgh in 1993, Gabrielle Macdonald is one of Scotland’s rising golfing stars. Having started playing golf at the age of ten, Gabrielle joined Prestonfield Golf Club aged 11 and, three years later, won the Ladies Club Championship aged just 14. After playing in the under 16 Strokeplay Championships at Craigielaw, Gabrielle joined the golf club and quickly became a valuable member of the club’s successful junior team. Winning the Scottish Junior Team Champions, the Craigielaw team also qualified for the British Finals in La Manga, Spain. Gabrielle Macdonald has been a member of Craigielaw Golf Club for over ten years and is delighted to now be representing the club as a professional. Located only 30 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh, Craigielaw caters to all the discerning golfer’s needs. The course measures 6,601 yards from the Championship tee and is often referred to as a ‘golfers’ paradise’. Designed by renowned golf course architect, Donald Steel, Craigielaw is relatively new to the East Lothian golfing scene, having opened its fairways in 2001 but has already hosted national events, including the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship. Inspired by the great links golf courses of Britain, the Craigielaw course features challenging greens and cavernous bunkers as well as boasting spectacular views over the Firth of Forth, Gullane Hill and out towards Edinburgh and Fife. The Club’s course is complimented by its short game and practice facilities, driving range and fully stocked professional shop which are second to none. During her membership at Craigielaw, Gabrielle played in her first Scottish Girl’s Amateur Championship where she won the Ansley Reid Salver at Peterhead in 2007. However, the highlight of Gabrielle’s Junior career has to be representing her beloved Scotland in the Girls Home Internationals of 2010.

Gabrielle credits her time at St Andrews for helping her golf development as well as the experience gained whilst representing Scotland in elite amateur events.
Gabrielle the Pro At the start of 2019, Gabrielle flew out to South Africa to embark on her first season as a tour playing professional. She played in five events on the Ladies Sunshine Tour and finished 9th on the Tour’s Investec Order of Merit recording two top tens and two top 15 finishes. Since then Gabrielle has been playing on the Ladies European Access Series (LETAS), the feeder tour to the LET. She played a total of 16 events, and made 14 cuts, finishing 26th on the season long Road to La Largue Order of Merit. Gabrielle is hoping to continue her fine season by gaining her full LET card for the 2020 season at Qualifying School.

Craigielaw Golf Club The perfect setting on Scotland’s Golf Coast.
East Lothian is one of Scotland’s most picturesque counties, with rolling hills, long stretches of coastline and incredibly well draining soils perfect for golf ready grounds all year round. Just 30 minutes from the historic and thriving Scottish capital, courses in this area are easily accessible and perfect for long weekends away. This area is famed for its championship links golf courses, and at the top of the pile is Craigielaw, a club with a well-earned reputation for its quality layout and friendly welcoming atmosphere. Whist Edinburgh is famed for its festivals, castle and shopping, there are a range of local attractions ideal for the quintessentially Scottish experience. Just over 20 minutes from the course lies the world famous Glenkinchie Distillery, offering world class tasting experiences; although we recommend if you’re looking to take some strokes off your handicap that you partake after you’ve played the course! Craigielaw is regularly referred to as a golfers' paradise. The 6601 yard championship course was designed by Donald Steel whose architectural expertise stretches across every open golf championship course. The course shares much of the charisma of the nearby and world-renowned courses Muirfield, North Berwick and Gullane. In fact, there are 22 other outstanding courses in the area making East Lothian ideal for touring golf societies who want maximise time on the course and minimise travel.
The course is relatively new on the scene; since opening in 2001 it has already hosted national events, including the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship and was a qualifying course for the 2007 British Seniors Open at Muirfield. Luffness New Golf Club
Situated in the heart of the renowned golfing country on the East Lothian coastline neighbouring Gullane, Muirfield and North Berwick Golf Clubs. There can be few more stimulating courses than Luffness New. A challenging traditional links course which offers a true test of golf without being the longest of courses, Luffness New neighbours Gullane, Muirfield and North Berwick Golf Clubs. Although there are no island greens surrounded by water, lakes on every hole or a succession of problems far beyond the average player, the course can be hard – mighty hard. Particularly, as the owners state, “when the wind blows down the Forth and the rough is thick enough to whet the whistle of a hungry herd”. The fairways are beautifully kept, and the golfer who can keep the ball down the middle will find little to worry him, but there is plenty of trouble in store for the wanderers. The bunkers are placed fairly to punish the errant shot and furthermore they are constructed to penalise severely those who cannot get the ball in the air.
The greens are small and true and always in excellent condition. The course measures 6502 yds, Par 70, SSS 72 from the blue tees, a reasonable figure on a calm day, but very tight if even a slight wind blowing. On Scotland’s coasts, wind can be an incalculable hazard, and the caddies have been heard to say “It will take you three to be up there in two today, Sir” – the second, ninth, eleventh and eighteenth fall into this category. The long fourth hole (572 yards) is a very good hole of its type with a deceptive hollow in front of the green, calling for a well-judged approach. The eighth and twelfth holes also merit a special word of praise for their attractive layout from the tee.

Challenging and enjoyable golf in a historic setting.
Founded in 1894 and designed by Old Tom Morris, Luffness New Golf Club offers challenging and enjoyable golf in a historic setting. The fourth and twelfth greens are situated close to the clubhouse; members are thus able to play several permutations without having to walk back from the country. The Clubhouse is the heart of the Club. The Smoke Room is one of the best club rooms in the game, offering an excellent location to meet other golfers and discuss the activities on the course, and many other matters, while enjoying a refreshment from the Bar. The Dining Room next door provides a traditional lunch service of great quality – again an excellent supplement to the trials on the course.
The Club maintains traditional values and requires jacket and tie for gentlemen and equivalent for ladies in the Smoke Room and Dining Room. There is a small casual bar where service can be provided without changing. All the rooms display numerous items of golfing memorabilia and artwork. Much of this relates to Freddie Tait, an original member of the Club and one of its greatest players.

It is a true links in that you can see the sea from every hole. The beach is just one long and sometimes wet hazard if the tide is in.
During July and August each year there is a programme of competitions open to all children under the age of 14, and many compete from six years of age or younger. The Club’s young golfers know all about tradition too – the oldest of their events, the Cree Medal, celebrated its Centenary in 2004.
You will find walls in the middle of fairways and in front of a green. All of these hazards are an important part of the Club’s history, charting the development of the course from a few holes through to the full 18-hole course. As a true championship course, the test you will face reflects this. As a result, the course is not suitable for inexperienced golfers, and all golfers should have a handicap of no more than 24 for gentlemen and 36 for ladies. For the younger golfer, The Wee Course is also open year-round, as is its better-known neighbour. Originally established in 1888 as the “Ladies’ Links” the Children’s course comprises a 9-hole Par 3 layout situated adjacent to the 15th and 16th holes on the West Links.
