Scottish Society Golf Yearbook 2020
Welcome to the Scottish Society Yearbook Edition of Your Golfer Magazine
An exciting year ahead
With an exciting year of golf ahead, it will be interesting to see what happens on the fairways in 2020. Can Brookes blast his way to more major titles or will a resurgent Rory reclaim his golfing crown… perhaps Tiger will continue his phenomenal comeback trail? Or maybe 2020 will be the year another rookie will break through with the same impact as Jordan Spieth had at Augusta in 2014 when he finished runner-up to Bubba Watson in his debut appearance? With an action-packed calendar of golfing events from the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January to The Player’s Championship at TPC Sawgrass in March, golfers will be keeping up to date with the latest news and results through television and the internet. In other notable events, the 9th April will see the start of the Masters Championship at Augusta whilst nearer to home, the Irish Open takes place at Lahinch at the end of May. The US Open this year will be played at Winged Foot whilst, the 149th Open Championship will be played at Royal St. George in July. In a popular move, the British Masters comes to Close House in August 2020.
Whilst looking through the golfing calendar, it is difficult not to mention the Ryder Cup. Following the European team’s resounding victory at Le Golf National in France, the 2020 Ryder Cup will be competed on the Whistling Straights course in Wisconsin with viewers hoping another culminating week’s golf taking us back to the thriller at Medinah back in 2012, when Team Europe last won the Ryder Cup in the States. It is not only exciting times for the professional game. Club golfers will be working to emulate their heroes on the screen in mid week and weekend competitions up and down the country whilst an emphasis must definitely be placed on junior sections – getting young people in to golf. Your Golfer Magazine should be your first port of call when organising your next society outing, away day or golfing break with friends. The forthcoming quarterly issues of the magazine will contain course reviews of some of the most popular golf clubs in the country, as well as profiles of the best and most cost-effective golf courses in Great Britain.
Here’s to an enjoyable year’s golf in 2020!

Gabrielle Macdonald
A special feature on Scotland’s latest star in the ladies game
Born in Edinburgh in 1993, Gabrielle Macdonald is one of Scotland’s rising golfing stars. Having started playing golf at the age of ten, Gabrielle joined Prestonfield Golf Club aged 11 and, three years later, won the Ladies Club Championship aged just 14. After playing in the under 16 Strokeplay Championships at Craigielaw, Gabrielle joined the golf club and quickly became a valuable member of the club’s successful junior team. Winning the Scottish Junior Team Champions, the Craigielaw team also qualified for the British Finals in La Manga, Spain. Gabrielle Macdonald has been a member of Craigielaw Golf Club for over ten years and is delighted to now be representing the club as a professional. Located only 30 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh, Craigielaw caters to all the discerning golfer’s needs. The course measures 6,601 yards from the Championship tee and is often referred to as a ‘golfers’ paradise’. Designed by renowned golf course architect, Donald Steel, Craigielaw is relatively new to the East Lothian golfing scene, having opened its fairways in 2001 but has already hosted national events, including the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship. Inspired by the great links golf courses of Britain, the Craigielaw course features challenging greens and cavernous bunkers as well as boasting spectacular views over the Firth of Forth, Gullane Hill and out towards Edinburgh and Fife. The Club’s course is complimented by its short game and practice facilities, driving range and fully stocked professional shop which are second to none. During her membership at Craigielaw, Gabrielle played in her first Scottish Girl’s Amateur Championship where she won the Ansley Reid Salver at Peterhead in 2007. However, the highlight of Gabrielle’s Junior career has to be representing her beloved Scotland in the Girls Home Internationals of 2010.
A platform for success Gabrielle Macdonald studied for a Geography degree at St Andrews. She left University with a 2:1 honours degree and a wealth of experience having lived at the home of golf for four years. Whilst studying at St Andrews, Gabrielle was a key member of the Saints Golf programme there and was also captain of the Ladies team for two years. In 2013, she represented Scotland in the Ladies Home Internationals and, one year later, won the Ladies Close Amateur Championship at Prestwick in 2014. Gabrielle has also represented Scotland at the European Ladies Team Championship in Slovenia as well as the Ladies World Team Championships in Japan. Gabrielle credits her time at St Andrews for helping her golf development as well as the experience gained whilst representing Scotland in elite amateur events.
Gabrielle the Pro At the start of 2019, Gabrielle flew out to South Africa to embark on her first season as a tour playing professional. She played in five events on the Ladies Sunshine Tour and finished 9th on the Tour’s Investec Order of Merit recording two top tens and two top 15 finishes. Since then Gabrielle has been playing on the Ladies European Access Series (LETAS), the feeder tour to the LET. She played a total of 16 events, and made 14 cuts, finishing 26th on the season long Road to La Largue Order of Merit. Gabrielle is hoping to continue her fine season by gaining her full LET card for the 2020 season at Qualifying School.
Supporting the local community On the 21st June 2019, Gabrielle Macdonald held a golf day at her home club of Craigielaw in order to raise funds for her first season as professional. The twenty-one team Texas Scramble was extremely well received by members and local businesses alike. The sun made an appearance and a successful day was had by all. Gabrielle was also delighted to support St Columba’s Hospice and the Edinburgh Maggie’s Centre, two charities close to her heart.
Q & A with Gabrielle Macdonald Q. You have been playing golf since the age of ten, do you feel that golf has become more accessible to female golfers over the last 10 years ? A.When I started playing golf, there was hardly any girls who were members at Prestonfield or Craigielaw and I mostly played with the junior boys. I think there are slightly more girls playing now but there is definitely a need to get more women and girls playing golf. I think a lot of male only golf clubs are now accepting women members and this can only help to make golf more accessible to females. Q.With more lady golfers making headlines in the game of golf, what advice would you give to a promising young female golfer looking to make a career in the sport? A.I think the most important thing for young golfers is to enjoy it and to play as much competitive golf as possible. Q.Since turning professional, what are the main differences between the pro male circuit and the pro female circuit? A.I’ve been playing on the Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS) which is similar to the mens Challenge Tour. I think the main difference is the prize money as I think the standard of golf and product is really high on both tours. The average purse on the LETAS is around €40,000 whereas the Challenge Tour is around €200,000. Q.What is your most memorable experience as a professional golfer so far? A.Starting my career out in South Africa was amazing, as I had never been there before and it was such a great country to visit. Teeing up in my first event as a pro at Fancourt and George GC was so exciting and this whole year has been a great experience for me. Q.What impact do you feel that your home club Craigelaw had on your early days as junior? A.Craigielaw has been a great place for my golf to develop. The junior team when I joined was really strong and it was great to be a part of the team’s success in the East Lothian league and we regularly won the national event for the best junior team in Scotland. I think the competitiveness of the team was an ideal environment for me to improve my golf. Q.What expectations do you have for yourself for the forthcoming 2020 golf season? A.I don’t really have any expectations other than to keep working hard and hopefully I can keep improving and the results will follow. Q. What else do you think could be done to encourage more lady golfers ? A.I think more coverage of women’s golf could help to create more interest and participation in the sport. If young girls see more of womens golf on tv it could help to inspire them to play and want to have a career in golf.
Many thanks to Gabrielle for taking the time to speak to Your Golfer Magazine

The original course at Ferntower was designed by Robert Simpson of Carnoustie and opened in 1914. It was subsequently updated by James Braid in 1924. New holes were added in 1980 to create the current Ferntower and Dornock courses.
Golf in wonderful surroundings Additionally to the championship, Ferntower course, Crieff Golf Club also features a superb nine hole golf course – ideal for beginners, families or those wishing to touch up on their short game! The Dornock course measures just 4,540 yards when played as two loops of nine offers a challenge to the regular player as well as helping the club encourage golf as a family activity with sets of ‘family tees’ on each of the nine holes. The shorter course has an easy-walking layout - ideal for mums, dads and young children as well as for those just getting into golf. Family golf tickets are available from the Crieff Golf Club pro shop but their advice is to book early to avoid disappointment.
Relax and unwind Crieff’s spectacular two-level clubhouse building stands majestically behind the club’s practice putting green. Catering is provided by Gourlay’s, a husband and wife catering team with vast experience within the hospitality sector. Recognised as the 15th oldest recorded golf club in the world and this year celebrating 225 years on the links (1793-2018). Records also show that golf was first played in the Chanonry area (now known as Fortrose) from as far back as 1702. Golf on the present site where Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club is now found, can be tracked back to the formulation of the Fortrose Golf Society which was founded in July 1793.
By the year 1888 the golf club had a membership of 50 members. The first official competitions were recorded at Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club in 1922 following the resurgence of the game after the end of the First World War. In 1932, world renowned golf course architect, James Braid was invited to advise on a new course layout with further land being acquired. Over the next two years, more land was purchased which led to Braid being invited to carry out a further survey on the land and its use as an eighteen hole golf course.
Golf in the wonderful surroundings of the 15th oldest golf club in the world.
In the mid-1950s, the Club had outgrown its facilities and the new clubhouse was planned. This clubhouse was further extended in 1989 to the building that can be enjoyed by members and visitors today.

Kilspindie Golf Club
One of Scotlands finest hidden gems Scotland’s rolling hills, stunning coastlines and dense parklands are known to hide some of the UK’s best golf courses; Kilspindie Golf Club is one of these. As one might expect from a traditional Scottish links, it lies immediately on the coast and is host to a range of wildlife including seals and migratory geese. The views here are particularly stunning; on a clear day you may well make out Edinburgh Castle, which lies less than an hour away by car. Without a doubt, this is one of a few courses for which it can said that its outstanding quality is matched by its outstanding beauty. Edinburgh is a city famed for its sense of humour, friendliness and inclusivity. With famous festivals, dormant volcanoes and world-renowned museums, the Scottish capital more than holds its own with the other great capitals of Europe. For a long weekend away, you would be hard pressed to find a city with as much culture, shopping and history as Edinburgh; this makes it the perfect city break for couples and golf societies alike. More locally to Kilspindie Golf Club, Aberlady nature reserve – one of the first of its kind in the area, has been dedicated to keeping this particular stretch of coast around Aberlady Bay untainted by human influence for over half a century.
The diverse wildlife, both animals and wild flowers, offer visitors a chance to really become acquainted with the beauty of the landscape, as well as a serenity that is all too seldom achieved on our busy modern lives. Kilspindie is reported to be the 35th oldest golf club in the world, instituted in 1867 and with between 27-28 thousand pairs of feet enjoying these links every year, the club’s success is testament to its lasting design and layout. It’s challenging but is a clear favourite of many who have played it, with quick greens and welldefined fairways. It is a club period of its history, even hosting an alternative Ryder Cup, with 12-man teams playing with pre-1930’s hickory shafted clubs Although the course has remained largely unchanged, the clubhouse has been expanding to deal with the demands of the modern golfer. Whilst maintaining its charm and personality; it still has its original “Locker Room and Bar”; the clubhouse is now able to cater for a range of events with style and comfort. The bar might be small but its stock is not, boasting an excellent array of beverages including over 80 different malt whiskies (although we recommend you spread these out over a few visits). Warmth and friendliness lie at the heart of this club, and such comments find their way into almost every review. Visitors pay the same as members for food and drink; it is clear that Kilspindie Golf Club wants to create an open community of golfers all of whom are drawn to the club by the same things; an incredible course in a stunning environment. It is little wonder that so many people are drawn back year after year and that Kilspindie is recognised locally, nationally and internationally as a hidden gem of Scotland.
Historic, Spectacula
“Kilspindie is one of Scotlands hidden treasures. A beautifully crafted golf course on the banks of the Firth of Forth it challenges golfers of every level.
