Golf Club
Despite its prominent location near to the business hub of the capital of England, the countryside surrounding London is home to quite a few golf courses. A recent trend; the growing love of urban golf has seen golf in a green, countryside setting traded for the grey, stone, inner-city street courses that London offers, so much so that the Urban Golf Championships are now held each year. It is on the outskirts of London where golf really comes into its own. It is well worth taking the time to visit the region’s selection of golf courses, many of which are designed by some of the world’s most renowned golf course architects. Why not couple a golfing with a city break? With plenty of golf course surrounding the capital and a million and one things to explore in the centre of London, discerning golfers are becoming more commonly drawn to London and its surrounding green belt. The Club offer a wide range of packages to suit the needs and budgets of visiting parties. Whether you’re looking for a single round or a fully structured and catered day, Haverhill have something for everyone.
HAVERHILL GOLF CLUB – A Brief history The concept of a golf course in Haverhill came about in the late 1960’s when plans to expand the town were being developed. The ex-Walker Cup Captain Charles Laurie amended initial layout designs and the resulting 9-hole course was built on farmland bisected by the Stour Brook and opened during the hot, dry summer of 1976. Originally a municipal pay and play course it was the Council’s continued insistence that temporary tees were used and a constant issue with drainage that led the members to take matters into their own hands and take over responsibility for the course.
By 1982 Haverhill Golf Club was established as a member owned club. Major developments came in the mid 1990’s when it was decided to build a new clubhouse and expand the course to 18 holes. Local course architect Philip Pilgrem was engaged as course designer and worked with members on plans to integrate the existing holes with the new holes on adjacent land. At the same time the new clubhouse was constructed, a tremendous improvement on the Portakabins that the members had previously enjoyed. The clubhouse was opened in 1995 and dedicated to Major Basil Kiddy, a founder member. The new 18 hole course layout was opened in April 1998 with the incoming Captain, Gerry Scott’s, ‘Drive In’. As club membership grew so did the clubhouse and 2007 saw the opening of the stud bar, an extension to the dining room and improvements to the kitchen and cellar to enable staff to cope with more visitors to the club. It has become a popular destination for dinners, private parties, wedding receptions and funeral receptions. In creating the expanded course some 7,000 trees were planted that today provide definition and beautiful colours, particularly in the autumn. These mass plantings augment the existing specimen trees and those kindly donated by members, strategically placed around the course. The introduction or expansion of the existing ponds on the 11th, 15th, 16th and 18th add to the natural water hazards presented by the Stour Brook and encourage you to think as you visualise your tee shot.

Prospering Through Partnerships
An editorial by Marc Valentine
The Rushcliffe Golf Club, voted East Midlands Golf Club of the Year for 2019, is going from strength to strength with a fantastically well-presented and unique course accompanied by a friendly clubhouse and welcoming staff, all of which culminates in an unforgettable golfing experience for members and visitors alike.
Marc and his team with the East Midlands Golf Club Of The Year Award ! Their recent success has come on the back of hard work and concerted efforts to modernise the Club and bring it very much into the 21st Century. One example of this is the introduction and development of strategic commercial partnerships with both Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club and Rhodes Wealth Management. The Rushcliffe Golf Club is in its second year as proud partners with Nottingham County Cricket Club. This association adds value to the Golf Club’s membership with cricket ticket and official merchandise giveaways exclusively available to members alongside the introduction of a special Winter Open into the Club’s golfing calendar where entrants get the opportunity to play alongside cricket stars past and present. New for 2019 is the Golf Club’s association with Rhodes Wealth Management which will see the inaugural running of the Rhodes Wealth Management Series. A selection of the Club’s major competitions will be exclusively sponsored by the Wealth Management partner starting with the Club Invitation Day in June and culminating with the British Village Championships on Sunday 22nd September.
When asked about the strategic partnerships in place Marc Valentine, Club Manager, started by saying that ‘everyone at The Rushcliffe Golf Club is proud to be associated with two fantastic sporting and commercial organisations. Through these relationships we are able to offer added value to our membership as well as broaden our appeal to help attract new visitors to what we believe to be the best Club in the East Midlands!’ He then went on to say ‘given the competitive nature of the golf industry, the ability to attract prestigious commercial partners highlights the fantastic status of our Golf Club and is testament to the values we believe in, the commitment shown by all the staff and by the support of our members. We look forward to the prosperous years that lay ahead and hope that plenty of Your Golfer magazine readers choose to pay us a visit, they will be warmly welcomed!’

Loudoun Gowf Club
The west coast of Scotland celebrates its glorious past with an eye clearly on the future. In 1860, the Open first came to the west coast of Scotland, when it was played at Prestwick. Since this time, the competition has become the greatest golfing event in the world with Ayrshire firmly at its heart. There are over fifty golf courses to choose from in Ayrshire and Arran. Visitors can choose from classic links to majestic inland layouts. The open was first played in South Ayrshire in October 1860. Eight golf professionals including Willie Park Snr and Old Tom Morris played three rounds over the 12-hole Prestwick course in one day. Over 150 years later, the Open Championship remains golf’s most prestigious professional tournament and Ayrshire retains its golfing heritage with two Open Championship venues located in the region. A proud history and bright future The Gowf Field of Loudoun dates back to the private gowf field of the Loudoun family; with gowf having been played on the land for over 400 years. It is believed that the land has never been under a plough, therefore the turf at Loudoun is unique and probably among the finest of any inland golf course. Golf on the land in Gaston dates back to as early as 1908. When in 1960, the Countess of Loudoun died; the estate was divided to form part of the Loudoun Gowf Club that can be enjoyed today. Later, in 1966 work began on the clubhouse to be formerly opened one year later, in 1967. Today, the comfortable clubhouse surroundings are the home to tales of what might have been, as well as well stocked bars and excellent dining options.
Since 1974, most expenditure has been on the course itself with investment in the tools and fertilisers needed to keep the course in the most pristine of conditions. However, in recent years, the golf course has taken a new look with tress lining the fairways and changes to the shape of some of the holes. The greens are larger than they had previously been but still present a stern test for all levels of golfer.
Why not see for yourself? Ayrshire and the surrounding terrain encompasses arguably the finest collection of links golf courses in the world and with quality accommodation, fine dining, heritage and charisma on its doorstep offers a truly unique experience. Boasting spectacular views over the River Clyde, the great facilities on offer in the region are coupled with the region’s close proximity to the centre of Glasgow where you can choose from a host of accommodation and entertainment providers.
