Welsh Society Golf Yearbook 2020

Welcome to the Welsh Society Yearbook Edition of Your Golfer Magazine

An exciting year ahead

With an exciting year of golf ahead, it will be interesting to see what happens on the fairways in 2020. Can Brookes blast his way to more major titles or will a resurgent Rory reclaim his golfing crown… perhaps Tiger will continue his phenomenal comeback trail? Or maybe 2020 will be the year another rookie will break through with the same impact as Jordan Spieth had at Augusta in 2014 when he finished runner-up to Bubba Watson in his debut appearance? With an action-packed calendar of golfing events from the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January to The Player’s Championship at TPC Sawgrass in March, golfers will be keeping up to date with the latest news and results through television and the internet. In other notable events, the 9th April will see the start of the Masters Championship at Augusta whilst nearer to home, the Irish Open takes place at Lahinch at the end of May. The US Open this year will be played at Winged Foot whilst, the 149th Open Championship will be played at Royal St. George in July. In a popular move, the British Masters comes to Close House in August 2020.

Whilst looking through the golfing calendar, it is difficult not to mention the Ryder Cup. Following the European team’s resounding victory at Le Golf National in France, the 2020 Ryder Cup will be competed on the Whistling Straights course in Wisconsin with viewers hoping another culminating week’s golf taking us back to the thriller at Medinah back in 2012, when Team Europe last won the Ryder Cup in the States. It is not only exciting times for the professional game. Club golfers will be working to emulate their heroes on the screen in mid week and weekend competitions up and down the country whilst an emphasis must definitely be placed on junior sections – getting young people in to golf. Your Golfer Magazine should be your first port of call when organising your next society outing, away day or golfing break with friends. The forthcoming quarterly issues of the magazine will contain course reviews of some of the most popular golf clubs in the country, as well as profiles of the best and most cost-effective golf courses in Great Britain.

Here’s to an enjoyable year’s golf in 2020!

Have you ever imagined being able to drive a ball from one country to another??

Sounds fanciful I know, however, let me introduce you to a golf club that can offer just that and more. Sitting just south of Oswestry in Shropshire lies Llanymynech Golf Club, with Offas Dyke (the largest ancient monument following the border between England and Wales) running through the course Llanymynech offers an abundance of greenery and some of the most fantastic scenery you will find anywhere in the UK. Due to the fantastic drainage that this club has painstakingly maintained through its history, Llanymynech can provide golfers of all abilities a year round course that plays as well in the winter as it does in the summer. In fact Ian Woosnam first learnt to play golf here at the age of nine years old and Llanymynech still remains one of his favourite courses to play to this day. In fact the Woosnam family have got a long tradition with Llanymynech Golf Club with both Ian’s Mother and Father being previous captains and still have a firm association with it up to the present day. With 15 holes in Wales and 3 holes in England you are provided with the unique opportunity to drive off on the 4th hole in Wales and actually putt out on the same hole in England! Making Llanymynech Golf Club the only dual nationality golf course in Europe. The twelth hole (the highest point) on this fantastic yet challenging golf course offers stunning views of Shropshire and the Welsh border with a toposcope to point out the places of interest , making your golf experience as pleasurable as can be found in this part of the UK. A club member and past lady captain goes on to say we aim to provide great day’s golf and a friendly welcome on the course and in the clubhouse.

Experience the magnificent,

Milford Haven Golf Club

Although a small county, Pembrokeshire offers some truly excellent golfing choices and is packed full of memorable blend of links and parkland style golf courses all with breath-taking panoramic views of the surrounding coast and countryside. Famed for its beautiful beaches and views, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park features its own championship parkland venue, Milford Haven Golf Club. Steeped in history and set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, visitors are assured of an unforgettable time with so much to see and do for all the family. Arguably the best golf club in West Wales, Milford Haven Golf Club has built a reputation for high quality golf, facilities and service. The par 70 golf course measures 6,067 yards from the championship white tees and is set up for all-year-round playability. In fact, the course is presented as well in the winter months as it is during the summer. The Milford Haven course begins with a series of picturesque pond holes, which are strategically placed to catch any wayward shots. It then meanders to the middle of the golf course where views of the National Park countryside and Milford Estuary can be enjoyed.

On April 3rd 2019 the club held the opening ceremony and competition to celebrate the redesign of the signature 18th hole. ‘Fountain View’, the new eighteenth hole at Milford Haven Golf Club was formally opened by a group of rugby players from the current Welsh national team and led by Welsh rugby legend Scott Quinnell. The opening was followed by a Texas Scramble where some of the Welsh heroes played in groups alongside existing Milford Haven members.

The Welsh Rugby Stars open the new 18th at Milford Haven. For the development of the 18th, Milford Haven’s management team obtained the architectural services of well-known and experienced course developer, Marc Westenborg who set about utilising the natural landscape which encompassed the existing green. Marc added a water feature adjacent to the Pine to create indecision as to taking the driver or laying up and also added two new bunkers to guard the front left hand side of the putting surface. The new 18th at Milford Haven represents a challenge to golfers and calls for a few decisions to be made when standing on the 18th tee!

The imposing Milford Haven clubhouse building overlooks Fountain View and contains all of the amenities that you would expect from a first class golfing venue. The club’s first class facilities include Fountain View restaurant, serving mouth-watering dishes to suit all palates, well-stocked bars and comfortable lounges with stunning views over the golf course. Visitors receive a warm welcome each time they play at Milford Haven. The club offer a variety of packages, which can be tailored depending on the visiting group’s requirements and how many golfers will be attending. The club’s Professional team will also be on hand to offer their advice and assistance throughout the day, ensuring that the event runs smoothly.

Llandrindod Wells Golf Club Since 1905

Central Wales is a vast area which offers visitors a variety of classic golf courses whilst enjoying some of the most breath-taking scenery in the whole of the UK at the same time. The region combines coastal links and fantastic inland golf courses, each of which make use of the superb characteristics that the surrounding Welsh countryside has to offer. A quiet region with a lot to shout about in terms of golfing pedigree, Mid Wales appeals to all standards of golfer which makes it a ‘must visit’ destination for golf breaks. The town of Llandrindod Wells, as the name implies, is historically linked with the health-giving waters which it still provides today. Recent years has seen a rise in the number of holiday-makers visiting the town with Llandrindod Wells boasting a variety of accommodation providers to suit all tastes and pockets.

Over 100 Years of Golfing History

Established in 1907, Llandrindod Golf Club has been welcoming golfers for over 100 years. The golf course was the brainchild of a group of local businessmen who identified land overlooking the Victorian Spa town as the ideal location for an 18hole golf course to serve the visitors that flocked to the town to ‘take the waters’. Designed by six times Open Champion, Harry Vardon and altered some years later by the legendary golf course architect, James Braid; Llandrindod Wells is a member of the Heart of Wales Golf Breaks group offering affordable golfing holidays in central Wales. Sculptured from the natural contours of the landscape, the upland links golf course provides a true test for golfers of all abilities combining the natural turf banks, hazards and well-protected true running greens for an enjoyable day’s golf.

Overlooking the neighbouring town and valleys, the course boasts amazing views right from the first tee when you look out across the boating lake and over the rooftops of the Victorian town.
