VILLAVALUE

The Directors and Senior Management of Your Golfer Magazine are delighted to announce multi-award winning property consultancy, Villavalue, as their Spanish Property Consultant of the Year for 2019. The award recognises the excellent services that Richard Rooke’s company have provided to Brits looking to take the plunge and purchase a holiday home or relocate to the Mediterranean climate in sun-drenched, Spain.

VILLAVALUE

Spanish Property Consultant of the Year 2019

Villavalue’s services are centred around all things to do with property and the purchase or Spanish property but, Your Golfer were particularly impressed with the back catalogue of golf resort properties that the company offer to discerning golfers and groups of golfers looking to invest in their love of the sport in another country.

All year-round golf in the sun! Spain remains Europe’s most popular golf break destination. Golfers return to the country year-afteryear to take advantage of Spain’s perfect climate, sandy beaches, mouth-watering cuisine and an array of stunning golf courses. The country is the home of plenty of renowned golfing venues and some of the world’s legendary golf courses. The amazing coastal courses of Spain are not to be missed and, coupled with the country’s inland parklands of ‘green Spain’, offer some of the finest golf courses in Europe if not the world.

Resorts and packages have been specifically designed for the travelling golfer. However, if that isn’t enough, many Brits now relocate to live and breathe the Spanish air whilst enjoying the unrivalled fairways of the country’s golf courses. Arranging the rental and purchase of Spanish properties can be time-consuming and expensive. However, utilising the services and experience of a well-travelled, well-established property consultant can be paramount to getting your dream holiday home. The Villavalue office and exhibition centre (Inmobiliaria Richard A Rooke) is located in Mil Palmeras, Pilar de la Horadada, seventeen kilometres south of Torrevieja, on the border with the Murcia Region. The Agency specialises in investment opportunities on some of the best known golfing developments in the Costa Blanca, Costa Calida regions and all along the East coast of Spain.

Villavalue provide value for money and a holiday home that you will fall in love with.

One of the fastest growing towns in Spain,Pilar de la Horadada, offers excellent opportunities for investment and purchase in a large range of properties at different ends of the market. Recognised as a first class independent property consultancy, their real estate business is extremely well-known on the Costa Blanca and, over the years, they have developed close relationships with the region’s best builders and property developers. With 35 years’ worth of experience within the Spanish property sector, based on the Costa Blanca, they pride themselves on a wide choice of meticulously selected properties at very competitive prices. Buyers can choose from a range of luxury apartments through to exclusive villas, close to the beach, on a golf course, or any other dream location that they may wish for. Blessed with rolling countryside and some of the most picturesque tow the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The region courses, including some that are ranked in the Top 100. You really are spoilt for choice when playing golf in Hertfordshire. Although just a thirty-minute journey from London, the county’s peaceful charm and rural elegance is refreshing. The green county offers an abundance of luscious fields and gardens with the splendid backdrop of the Chiltern Hills. The region’s golf courses are a fine blend of heathland and woodland, with natural hazards and wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. Hertfordshire offers golf in a truly serene setting. Porters Park Golf Club dates back to 1899 when it became one of the first golf courses on the north side of London. At this time, the golf club was founded in the grounds of the local ‘Porters’ mansion. Today the only remaining evidence of Porters mansion is an underground ice house located near the third fairway. Parkland golf course’s early design was heavily influenced by John Henry ‘JH’ Taylor one of the great golf course architects, and Charles Kenneth Cotton who went on to become one of the UK’s most distinguished post-war golf course architects. Picturesque, tree-lined fairways using the natural contours of the land, magnificent greens and a brook meandering through several holes are features of today’s Porters Park golf course which has hosted Open Championship Qualifying event on six occasions.

A true test of golf where accuracy and course management are essential ingredients for an enjoyable round.

The clubhouse at Porters Park was damaged by fire in 1954 with much of the original structure having to be rebuilt. A large extension of the clubhouse facilities was completed in 1990 enhancing the Club’s facilities for members and guests alike, whilst offering spectacular views across the course from the lounge and, restaurant and bar areas. Today, the clubhouse combines tradition and modern ambience. During refurbishments and upgrades, the Club is careful to retain the clubhouse’s character that has been enjoyed by so many through the years. The Club’s catering team provides imaginative cuisine as well as traditional favourites all of which can be served in the Club’s superblyappointed and spacious dining room which opens on to a terrace with spectacular views across the golf course. The dining room seats 120 diners for lunches and evening meals as well as more formal occasions.

There are different scenarios and penalties for players that hit the incorrect ball during their round of golf. These are outlined by the R & A:

Match Play

If a player makes a stroke at the wrong ball, he loses the hole. If the wrong ball belongs to another player, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played. If the player and opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at the wrong ball loses the hole; when this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.

Stroke Play

If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two shots. The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or proceeding under the rules. If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified.

Mark your ball!

A company which was formed with golfers in mind, stampyourballs.com was founded by Inventor and Managing Director, Paul Green who once made the fatal golfing error of playing the wrong ball. Following the mishap, Paul set about developing a product that eliminates the risk.

SAPEY CELEBRATES THE NEW SEASON - WITH NEW MEMBERS With the 2017 threat of closure a distant memory, The Rowan Course at Sapey Golf and Country Club is playing its best for years thanks to the expertise of Course Manager Kevin Booth and capital investment from Wyldecrest Golf and Leisure - resulting in a surge of new members for the 2019 season. “A full programme of greens management has been followed in the last year and is now really beginning to pay dividends” said Course Manager Kevin Booth. “We sit on clay so I have concentrated on ensuring that the course and especially the greens drain well. We have also spent the winter refurbishing all our machinery so it will be fit for purpose and last for years to come” This was evident at the Club’s season opener on Saturday 13th April where 108 competitors vied for the very attractive Alfie Best Open AM/AM Trophy won by intermediate team Dean Corbett, Steve Trafford, Alex Whitty and Bill James. “The course is in the best condition I’ve ever seen it and it’s definitely a much more challenging course than many others I’ve played which makes winning the Alfie Best Trophy a real achievement. We all had a great day on Saturday with the food and the presentation after, it was perfect.” commented Alex. Alex, Dean and Steve had placed 2nd in 2018’s competition narrowly missing victory on count back so their win was especially sweet. Dean added, “We would like to say how incredible the effort has been from everyone at Sapey. Saturday was a brilliant day, which is testament to team on bringing the club back from the brink. The contrast between the course condition and club in general now, compared to last year, is almost unrecognisable. We can once again feel proud of this amazing club and it was great to have Alfie Best here this year to present the trophy.” General Manager Paul Hubner said, “Kevin has only been here a short while but his impact has been immense. Returning visitors are astounded with the condition of the course now and the result is that our membership is swelling almost by the day. In less than two years our net membership has grown by 69% and we have built a strong intermediate section approaching 50 members which is so crucial for future success. It is all very, very encouraging”.

The Alfie Best Trophy The club has also had investment with the addition of a state of the art GCQuad golf simulator, the doubling of the balcony overlooking the 18th green and the addition of three luxury lodges, complete with hot tubs under the stars. More lodges are planned in the next 12 months to encourage societies to play and stay at Sapey and also provide a beautiful location for get-togethers and romantic minibreaks to ensure that year round income is supplemented, “This business is typically 12 months of cost with 7 months or so of revenue, so to survive golf clubs need to look to tertiary income such as accommodation, restaurant and bar and private events to ensure that they can pay the winter bills” added Paul.

Looking to the future the Sapey Golf and Country Club is continuing its investment with a new golf pro shop due to be installed this summer and outline plans for a leisure complex including swimming pool and gym continuing.

Although Northampton is not generally seen as a prominent golfing county in England, It is never the less home to two of the best women golfers in Europe, Charley Hull and Meghan Maclaren. These two are seen as role models for many of the aspiring young female golfers of today, however, as they both herald from my home county I though it a good idea to find out whether golf clubs in Northamptonshire were making in roads to try and tempt more women into the sport. My first port of call was Northamptonshire County Golf Club. Widely known as the premier course in the region and host for the regional qualifying for The Open. They offer taster sessions specifically aimed at women golfers which have increased in participation over recent years and now culminates in them have over 100 female members. They have also got a partnership with with a local college that offers access to coaching and the opportunity to play different courses. This ensures that different demographics and age ranges are totally catered for.

I also had the pleasure in conversing with Julie Sutherland, Juile is the current ladies captain at Prior Hall Golf Club and informed me of the many events they hold to encourage more and more women into the game. They are planning to invite ladies to an open day later this year in order for them to have a look at the course and facilities that are open to them as members. It is also no surprise to learn that the Lady section of the club is actually celebrating its 30th year in existence in September this year. A sure sign that Prior Hall are continuing to embrace women as part of the clubs on going commitment to introduce women into the game. A third club, Whittlebury Park also seem to be extremely pro-active in introducing women to golf. They are offering free taster sessions in June which will include coaching sessions and the ability to try the practice areas as well as the course itself.

It is with no uncertainty that women now and in the future will be influencing the game of golf for many years to come. Wouldn’t it be nice to see more and more clubs taking the lead of the clubs mentioned above and helping golf become easily accessible to all??

Prospering Through Partnerships

An editorial by Marc Valentine

The Rushcliffe Golf Club, voted East Midlands Golf Club of the Year for 2019, is going from strength to strength with a fantastically well-presented and unique course accompanied by a friendly clubhouse and welcoming staff, all of which culminates in an unforgettable golfing experience for members and visitors alike.

Marc and his team with the East Midlands Golf Club Of The Year Award ! Their recent success has come on the back of hard work and concerted efforts to modernise the Club and bring it very much into the 21st Century. One example of this is the introduction and development of strategic commercial partnerships with both Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club and Rhodes Wealth Management. The Rushcliffe Golf Club is in its second year as proud partners with Nottingham County Cricket Club. This association adds value to the Golf Club’s membership with cricket ticket and official merchandise giveaways exclusively available to members alongside the introduction of a special Winter Open into the Club’s golfing calendar where entrants get the opportunity to play alongside cricket stars past and present. New for 2019 is the Golf Club’s association with Rhodes Wealth Management which will see the inaugural running of the Rhodes Wealth Management Series. A selection of the Club’s major competitions will be exclusively sponsored by the Wealth Management partner starting with the Club Invitation Day in June and culminating with the British Village Championships on Sunday 22nd September.

When asked about the strategic partnerships in place Marc Valentine, Club Manager, started by saying that ‘everyone at The Rushcliffe Golf Club is proud to be associated with two fantastic sporting and commercial organisations. Through these relationships we are able to offer added value to our membership as well as broaden our appeal to help attract new visitors to what we believe to be the best Club in the East Midlands!’ He then went on to say ‘given the competitive nature of the golf industry, the ability to attract prestigious commercial partners highlights the fantastic status of our Golf Club and is testament to the values we believe in, the commitment shown by all the staff and by the support of our members. We look forward to the prosperous years that lay ahead and hope that plenty of Your Golfer magazine readers choose to pay us a visit, they will be warmly welcomed!’

Review Calling for accuracy, The Leicestershire

Located in the heart of England, the land-locked county of Leicestershire is definitely one where visitors are able to experience the great outdoors and, one of the friendliest regions that you’ll come across on your golfing travels. Founded in 1890, The Leicestershire Golf Club is the oldest golf club in the county. The beautiful parkland golf course, standing to the south of the city of Leicester, features mature, tree-lined fairways and greens of the finest quality which challenge low-handicappers whilst remaining suitable playability for all standards of golfer. Upon arrival at The Leicestershire Golf Club, the home of the 2019 English men's open mid-amateur stroke play - the Logan Trophy - the first thing I noticed was the fantastic circular clubhouse building which boasts great views across the golf course and beyond to the surrounding, picturesque Leicestershire countryside.

With our reviewers Michael Hammerton & Richard Wykes. The clubhouse staff were very pleasant whilst the club’s facilities were excellent. The menu was extensive and reasonably priced. The Leicestershire’s club Professional was especially helpful and my playing partner and I a tour of the facilities and explained a few things about the golf club. The 6,456 yard par 70 course is set in beautiful parkland and can be played in various layouts. The enjoyable golf course features a good variety of holes with no hole the same calling for approach shots using different irons. The Blue tees incorporate two par 5s on holes 6 and 9 whilst when playing from the Yellow tees, the course consist of all par 3s and 4s with some very long par 4s to challenge the lowest of handicappers. The par 3 holes played quite long and challenging calling for accuracy and little room for error. Although tree-lined, the course does offer two short par 4 holes the 7th and 13th. There are also a few ‘risk and reward’ holes. The Leicestershire is a nice course with very pretty surroundings and represents a good test of golf for all, whilst providing good value for money to visitors and society groups.

Uttoxeter Golf Club With Mick & Richie

Accessible from all areas of the UK, Staffordshire is a county that combines natural beauty with traditions. The perfect retreat for a short break, the county and surrounding towns and villages are home to a variety of attractions which mean accommodation is affordable and there are plenty of eateries to choose from. Uttoxeter is a friendly market town in Staffordshire. Positioned close to the River Dove and near to the cities of Stoke-on-Trent and Derby, Uttoxeter Racecourse is one of the town’s main attractions and is just a short walk from the town centre as is the golf course. Alton Towers resort is located just ten miles away and The Peak District National Park is about twenty miles from Uttoxeter town centre. Uttoxeter Golf Club sits, nestled next to the Racecourse and River Dove overlooking the Weaver Hills. The challenging parkland golf course offers an enjoyable experience for all and is widely regarded as one of the country’s best kept secrets and could be classed as a hidden gem in the heart of the Staffordshire countryside.

The Your Golfer Magazine team were lucky enough to play the Uttoxeter golf course

Great value for money, Uttoxeter Golf Club

Uttoxeter was a very tight golf course with lots of blind shots calling for accuracy to find the hidden fairways. A very hilly golf course running along the side of Uttoxeter race course, the par 69, measures 5,501 yards from the yellow tees and is home to four straightforward par 3s and only one par 5 within the eighteen holes. The golf course was very well kept with manicured fairways and small, receptive greens. Players really have to think their way around this golf course with the main challenge being the numerous blind traps and hazards to catch any wayward approach shots. The clubhouse and professional staff at Uttoxeter Golf Club were very friendly and attentive whilst green fees were very reasonably priced at just ÂŁ20 to play midweek and ÂŁ25 at weekends.

SAPEY GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

With Michael Hammerton & Richard Wykes. Set high up in the hills on the Worcestershire and Herefordshire Borders, Sapey Golf Club has a reputation for quality and did not let s down! We received a very warm welcome on arrival from Club Professional, Martin Payne and the clubhouse staff. Conscious that Sapey has a great reputation for food and hospitality, we arrived earlier than our scheduled tee time – the breakfast did not disappoint! The Sapey clubhouse is very nice. There is a large golfers spike bar a restaurant with pretty views and a balcony overlooking the golf course. The Sapey Golf Club comprises a testing 27-hole golf course but the main 18 holes are featured on the enjoyable yet challenging, Rowen course. A par 69, measuring 5,705 yards from the yellow tee, the course is superbly presented and offers some magnificent views across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The course boasts six wonderful par 3 holes, each with a unique challenge where brave shots are rewarded. The front nine of the Rowen sets out tight to the boundaries of the golf course calling for accuracy from the tee whilst the back nine plays inside the front nine. There are quite a lot of bunkers - all of good quality, and quite a few water hazards dotted around the course catching any wayward shots. The 27-holes feature a varied selection of golf holes with no hole looking or playing the same. The grass around the fringes of the receptive greens made for some great lies with the ball sitting nicely for a wellexecuted chip. A nice touch by the green-keeping staff saw all bunkers with rakes fitted with holders, painted bright hazard yellow. So for those who have not played the course before, they were clearly visible! This is a great venue for society golf with visitors welcome seven days a week and, all-in-all, golf, dining and hospitality all combined to result in a very enjoyable day out.

Home to the largest natural lake in England, Windermere is also home to one of the finest golf courses in the country.

W

indermere Golf Club was founded in 1981 by a group of golf enthusiasts from the Windermere area. The group engaged the help of George Lowe, the professional at Lytham and St Annes Golf Club. Lowe was confident of laying out an admirable nine-hole course over an area known as Cleaberrow Fells, near Bownesson-Windermere and, after a successful eighteen months, the course was extended to an 18-hole golf course.

At the turn of the century, due to periods of prolonged rainfall and constant use, all eighteen greens were rebuilt to USGA standards. Today, the par 67 Windermere course measures 5,122 yards from the championship tees and represents an enjoyable yet stern challenge for even the most accomplished of golfers. Set in picturesque, natural terrain, the golf course combines narrow fairways and rocky outcrops with natural hazards, heather and bracken to create a real golfing gem.

The welcome at Windermere Golf Club matches the wonderful golf course and spectacular landscape – visitors will not be disappointed.

On a clear day, visitors can enjoy views of Morecambe Bay in the south, Coniston Old Man in the west, the Langdales and Fairfield Horseshoe in the north and the Pennines in the east. Overlooking the 17th hole, the beautifully-appointed clubhouse at Windermere is set on the hillside and features a friendly, well stocked bar. All catering needs are met for both members and visitors alike through a mouth-watering array of freshly prepared snacks and imaginative dishes featured on a full and varied daily menu.

Golf in the Lake District

Windermere Golf Club is a popular venue for society and competitive golf and offers packages based on eight golfers. Visiting societies can play 18, 27 or 36 holes of championship golf at Windermere with dining options also included and tailored to meet individual requirements.

Please check out our website where you will find a link to a list of our Recommended Accommodation Providers.

Predominantly mountainous with towering peaks and sparkling lakes dominating the countryside, the Lake District attracts millions of visitors each year. The variety of parkland, heathland and links golf courses in the region are a big attraction too. Cumbrian golf courses all have three characteristics in common; their quality, variety and value for money with visiting golfers welcomed with open arms. The parkland and fell courses are popular all year round and feature a high standard of fairway and greens. There is a course to test every skill, most of which bask in the glory of the surrounding Lake District countryside with spectacular views across its magnificent scenery.

ENVILLE GOLF CLUB

Enville Golf Club near Stourbridge in the County of South Staffordshire is an R & A and England Golf Championship venue and recently hosted the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championships 2019. Tucked away near the village of Enville, the first nine holes and clubhouse of Enville Golf Club were erected in 1935 with a second nine added and the course extended to eighteen holes in 1938. Two further loops of nine were added and, in 1983 the 36 holes were relaid out to create two eighteen hole golf courses. Today, the two golf courses, which are set in pleasant, undulating country; partly heath and partly woodland attract a tremendous amount of visitors each year many of whom return. Both courses, the par 72 Highgate course, and the Lodge a par 71 golf course are maintained to the highest of standards and boast 36 uniquely contrasting holes. Presenting a test for even the most accomplished of golfer in idyllic conditions for golf, the typical English heathland golf course offers play all-year-round thanks to excellent drainage.

Enville Golf Club is also home to first class practice facilities including a 360 yard driving range and three short game areas.

The Your Golfer Magazine team were lucky enough to sample The Highgate course for themselves. A real gem of a golf course, the Highgate is a blend of picturesque heathland and woodland course; the tees are extremely well cared for, fairways are shaped to perfection and can be fairly linksy in places allowing for good run and the putting surfaces have gained a reputation for being among the best in the area, fast and smooth with subtle contours.

Tranquil surroundings in the West Midlands A lot of the holes are tree-lined, and with the run many players will reach position using a fairway wood on a good proportion of the holes. There are four par five's on the Highgate with the ninth hole, a monster of a hole at 586 yards off the yellow tees. The course also features four wonderfullydesigned par three's and a couple of exciting par fours back to back on the 12th and 13th. The Highgate back nine is arguably more difficult that the front nine which prepares players for the challenge ahead. Both golf courses, the Highgate and Lodge call for excellent course management and accuracy from the tees to shoot a low score. The Enville clubhouse and spike bar facilities are available seven days a week. Offering a wide range of local ales and beers, as well as the locally brewed and award-winning, Enville Ale the clubhouse is the ideal place to relax and unwind pre or post round.

The club provides excellent dining options with bar snacks and meals from the clubhouse’s specials board daily whilst guests are served by an attentive staff team. In the winter, the club’s log burning stove creates a warm and cosy ambience in the clubhouse building whilst, during the summer months, the patio area is the perfect place for al fresco eating and drinking. Enville Golf Club welcomes visitors and society groups throughout the year. The club’s professional team can tailor their golf day packages to suit the needs of the visiting party. Individual and small groups are just as welcome as societies and corporate guests, encouraging all to enjoy the challenge of the two Enville golf courses, fabulous hospitality and a heritage of over 75 years. Enville Golf Club can also recommend local accommodation providers who can work with groups to create the ideal golf break.

Come and see for yourself, You'll not be disappointed.

"I played at Stanton on the Wolds in October 2018, the only word to describe the experience was outstanding. The clubhouse has a great atmosphere, the staff friendly and welcoming, with nothing being to much trouble, food was excellent. Now for the course, the layout is parkland, tight fairways but fair, the greens are the best I have ever played on in my 30+ years of playing top courses. If you are thinking of visiting Stanton on the Wolds GC....DO.... you will love it. Mr John Busby (Oct 2018) "Totally organised. Great practice facilities, very helpful staff in every department – all topped off with the purest putting surface you could ever want." –

The Milford Haven course begins with a series of picturesque pond holes, which are strategically placed to catch any wayward shots. It then meanders to the middle of the golf course where views of the National Park countryside and Milford Estuary can be enjoyed.

On April 3rd 2019 the club held the opening ceremony and competition to celebrate the redesign of the signature 18th hole. ‘Fountain View’, the new eighteenth hole at Milford Haven Golf Club was formally opened by a group of rugby players from the current Welsh national team and led by Welsh rugby legend Scott Quinnell. The opening was followed by a Texas Scramble where some of the Welsh heroes played in groups alongside existing Milford Haven members.

The Welsh Rugby Stars open the new 18th at Milford Haven. For the development of the 18th, Milford Haven’s management team obtained the architectural services of well-known and experienced course developer, Marc Westenborg who set about utilising the natural landscape which encompassed the existing green. Marc added a water feature adjacent to the Pine trees that surrounded the hole and also added two new bunkers to guard the front left hand side of the putting surface. The new 18th at Milford Haven represents a challenge to golfers and calls for a few decisions to be made when standing on the 18th tee!

The imposing Milford Haven clubhouse building overlooks Fountain View and contains all of the amenities that you would expect from a first class golfing venue.
