2018 can be fondly remembered in golfing circles for many reasons. With the UK basking in unprecedented conditions that are more akin to Spain and Portugal, the summer months gave opportunity to many who love the game to play in some wonderful conditions, which brought a timely reminder that The UK is home to some of the most diverse and picturesque courses in Europe. Open Week in Scotland was of course no exception, with Carnoustie being blessed with a heatwave that saw some of the worlds greatest players producing drives of some 400 yards plus! This culminated in Francesco Molinari not only being crowned Open Champion, but also the first Italian to win a Major. The European Ryder Cup team won in stunning fashion against the competition from across the pond, solidifying Europe as once again producing the worlds best golfers. However, it is also good to remember that the UK is also home to many clubs and courses that play exceptionally well through the Winter months, and by looking through the following pages you will find profiles and reviews on courses that can play as well during the Winter months as they do on those hot Summer days.

Drive more than the golf ball with i-motioncaddys
Golf is a rewarding and challenging sport which can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities But players, usually over the age of 50, who suffer from back problems, arthritis and other illnesses do not find walking around an eighteen hole golf course as easy as some of their younger playing partners This is where I-motioncaddys “Comes Into Play with the unique I-m4 single seat Golf buggy which will take the stress and pain out of your round of golf and bring back the enjoyment! There are different scenarios and penalties for players that hit the incorrect ball during their round of golf. These are outlined by the R & A:
Match Play
If a player makes a stroke at the wrong ball, he loses the hole. If the wrong ball belongs to another player, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played. If the player and opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at the wrong ball loses the hole; when this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.
Stroke Play
If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two shots. The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or proceeding under the rules. If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified.
Mark your ball!
A company which was formed with golfers in mind, stampyourballs.com was founded by Inventor and Managing Director, Paul Green who once made the fatal golfing error of playing the wrong ball. Following the mishap, Paul set about developing a product that eliminates the risk.

Maximise your golfing potential Standard golf clubs are developed in a way to suit a broad range of golf style and swing patterns. Custom fitting on the other hand appreciates the highly-personalised nature of the golf swing. Every individual considerably differs in both their ability and style of play. Custom fitting is the means in which a golf club is tailored according to a golfer’s personal swing. When embarking on a custom-fit, you will undertake a fitting session where a golf specialist will take various measurements such as wrist to floor, height and hand size. This will provide an indication of the most suitable sized golf club for your game and the angle that the club should have to the ground. You will then be asked to hit some balls to determine where the heel and toe of the golf club is striking the ground. Analysis of this may determine that a flatter golf club would be more beneficial to your style of play or that an amount of additional loft required. Technological advances in the game of golf have made it possible to analyse the golf swing in more detail. Custom fit specialist can now perform tests with launch monitor equipment to measure ball speed, launch angle, and side spin to increase the distance the distance you can achieve with every shot.
If you’re a regular golfer, customised clubs are well worth the investment to maximise the potential of your golf swing.

If your equipment came off the shelf of a large golf wholesaler with multiple items of the same stock, there is every possibility that the equipment was to blame and not your golf swing. Shared ownership of a cottage in South Brittany
Golf in France is diverse and relaxed, perfect for visiting groups of golfers. Busy bars, glamourous restaurants and coastal locations coupled with stunning golf courses has made the sport a favourite all over the country, particularly in the south where the popularity of golf has really taken off as it has throughout the country following the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National. With its close proximity to the UK, excellent climate and gastronomy, France offers some of the finest golf on the continent. A golfing holiday in southern France is a certainly something to savour If you’re looking for a holiday home in France, there are many schemes that provide sole occupancy of a property for a number of weeks each year.
Part-ownership is an option to explore Don’t rush into a scheme without fully researching the market and, before you decide what you are going to do, be clear what you want and what you can realistically expect to get for your money.
Shared ownership schemes can be called part ownership, co-ownership or fractional ownership and are rapidly increasing in popularity. With prices outstripping inflation, people cannot afford outright ownership with many exploring ways of buying at least a share of their dream home in France. Part-ownerships can be made up of consortia of buyers, including businesses, friends and family. They allow you to recoup your investment in savings on holiday costs while retaining the equity in the property. Part-ownership also enables people to access the size and quality of property which would normally be unimaginable.
Another added bonus of embarking on a Bretesche 48 shared ownership scheme is that the cottage is fully serviced and, at the end of each visit, the laundry team replaces used linen with fresh sheets etc ready for the next guests. The domain management take care of grass cutting for the whole urbanisation but members maintain their own flowerbeds and outdoor ornaments.
Part-ownership represents much better value than timeshare property and does not need to cost much more. The schemes are a great option for a family seeking a holiday home for a few weeks of the year as opposed to embarking on a massive investment or costly timeshare with strangers.
Bretesche 48, South Brittany Shared ownership of this property includes membership of the superb Bretesche Golf Club, an idyllically placed golf resort in South Brittany. Members can enjoy unlimited golf for four people as well as the opportunity to play at other local golf clubs including La Baule and Nantes at much reduced green fees. Located next to the sixth tee, the cottage is situated just a short walk from the first tee at Bretesche. The elegantly decorated cottage is ‘a home from home’, around thirty years old and comes fully furnished with a modern, well-equipped kitchen, spacious sitting room and wonderfully-appointed dining area. Bretesche 48 features two bedrooms; one with an en-suite bathroom and the other with a separate shower room. The property benefits from a full gas central heating system which heats the cottage throughout.
Owners will also have access to indoor and outdoor swimming pools for a fixed sum per week. Whilst, they can also enjoy all that the cottage’s location offers in addition to golf ‘on their door step’ – situated just twenty minutes from the coast, some wonderful walks can be enjoyed at all times of day as well as, historic places to visit. The region of southern Brittany is also home to a wealth of many typical French Markets selling local produce as well as fine clothing. Locally, these can be accessed at Roche Bernard and in the beautiful location of Vanne. Nante Airport is forty-five minutes away via motorway so travel is not an issue. After a short flight, it is not long until, owners can start experiencing the excellent restaurants in the area, not least the Relais and Chateaux which are idyllically located on-site. Each shared ownership offers members two weeks occupation at a different time each year on a preplanned rotation basis. Over a twelve year period, a share-holder of one share can expect to occupy the cottage during every month of the year with flexibility amongst members. For further information and to check current shareholding availability, please contact 07841 930 905 or email bretesche48@gmail.com

Loudoun Gowf Club Gowfing Since 1909
The west coast of Scotland celebrates its glorious past with an eye clearly on the future. In 1860, the Open first came to the west coast of Scotland, when it was played at Prestwick. Since this time, the competition has become the greatest golfing event in the world with Ayrshire firmly at its heart. Ayrshire and the surrounding terrain encompasses arguably the finest collection of links golf courses in the world and with quality accommodation, fine dining, heritage and charisma on its doorstep offers a truly unique experience. The great facilities on offer in the region are coupled with the region’s close proximity to the centre of Glasgow where you can choose from a host of accommodation and entertainment providers. Visiting groups are assured of a hugely enjoyable experience at some of the Ayrshire’s multi course venues and excellent stay and play resorts which combine excellent links and parkland golf courses.
Galston in East Ayrshire is situated in wooded countryside and is one of a small group of towns set in the Irvine Valley.
Galston is also home to the uniquely named, Loudoun Gowf Club. The Gowf Field of Loudoun dates back to the private gowf field of the Loudoun family; with gowf having been played on the land for over 400 years. It is believed that the land has never been under a plough, therefore the turf at Loudoun is unique and probably among the finest of any inland golf course. Golf on the land in Galston dates back to as early as 1908. When in 1960, the Countess of Loudoun died; the estate was divided to form part of the Loudoun Gowf Club that can be enjoyed today. Later, in 1966 work began on the clubhouse to be formerly opened one year later, in 1967. Today, the comfortable clubhouse surroundings are the home to tales of what might have been, as well as well stocked bars and excellent dining options. Since 1974, most expenditure has been on the course itself with investment in the tools and fertilisers needed to keep the course in the most pristine of conditions. However, in recent years, the golf course has taken a new look with tress lining the fairways and changes to the shape of some of the holes. The greens are larger than they had previously been but still present a stern test for all levels of golfer. Loudoun Gowf Club offer a range of 18, 27 and 36-hole packages available for visiting parties with a professional team on hand to ensure that the day runs smoothly.

See the evolution of w Located just a few minutes south of Edinburgh, the Lothians region is one of Scotland’s finest golf break destinations with a choice of well over twenty-two golf courses to test all ages and abilities. The rugged and beautiful coastline of East Lothian is affectionately known as Scotland’s Golf Coast with so much choice within an hour’s drive from the historic and lively capital city of Edinburgh and its international airport. Visiting groups can enjoy a blend of traditional links exposed to the varying wind conditions of the region and an excellent array of inland golf courses; many steeped in history and all offering a warm welcome to visiting golfers. Away from the golf course, visitors to the Lothians can enjoy many life experiences. One of the finest outing for a discerning golfer visiting the region could be taking in the surroundings of a working whisky distillery.
From ancient Greek technology, to a cottage industry in Scotland, and finally a global pheromone, the evolution of Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a lesson in ingenuity, craft and the law of unintended consequences. During the years between the 12th and 14th centuries, the process of distillation moved from the east to eastern Europe and eventually, the west. The church was originally against the production of distilled spirits but eventually allowed monasteries to house still, with their herb gardens providing the ingredients for early medicines and liqueurs. Despite a crash towards the end of the 19th century, stiff competition from other, whisky-producing nations, two world wars and the great depression, Scotch Whisky has survived to become the world’s number one spirit of choice. Today, it is enjoyed by people of all backgrounds, creeds and clans and is a spirit to toast all occasions.
whisky in East Lothian People and places don’t just shape a single malt whisky’s flavour, they change the course of its future. Glenkinchie Distillery gives visitors an insight in to the history and creation of its single malt Scotch whisky that is loved by so many today. Farmers John and George Rate chose the Lothian site for their Milton Distillery in 1825 and were recorded as the license holders for the Glenkinchie Distillery in 1837.
Today, Glenkinchie Distillery is visited by over 45,000 visitors each year all with a passion for the Lothians and Scottish malt whisky. Just fifteen miles from the capital, Glenkinchie is the Edinburgh Malt of choice. Visitors to East Lothian can catch a shuttle bus from the centre of Edinburgh twice a day, seven days a week.
After being bought out and transformed to a working farm, the site was later revived in 1880 as a Distillery by a consortium of expert brewers, blenders and wine merchants. In 1914 a new company, Scottish Malt Distillers was founded from the site in East Lothian.

Scotland’s rolling hills, stunning coastlines and dense parklands, are known to hide some of the UK’s best golf courses; Kilspindie Golf Club is amongst one of these. As one might expect from a traditional Scottish links, it lies immediately on the coast and is host to a range of wildlife including seals and migratory geese. The views here are particularly stunning; on a clear day you may well make out Edinburgh Castle, which lies less than an hour away by car. Without a doubt, this is one of few courses for which it can be said that its outstanding quality is matched by its outstanding beauty. Edinburgh is a city famed for its sense of humour, friendliness and inclusivity. With famous festivals, dormant volcanos and world-renowned museums, the Scottish capital more than holds its own with the other great capitals of Europe. For a long weekend away, you would be hard pressed to find a city with as much culture, shopping and history as Edinburgh; this makes it the perfect city break for couples and golf societies alike.
More locally to Kilspindie Golf Club, Aberlady nature reserve – one of the first of its kind in the area, has been dedicated to keeping this particular stretch of coast around Aberlady Bay, untainted by human influence for over half a century. The diverse wildlife, both animals and wild flowers, offer visitors a chance to really become reacquainted with the beauty of the landscape, as well as a serenity that is all too seldom achieved in our busy modern lives. Kilspindie is reputed to be the 35th oldest golf club in the world, instituted in 1867 and with between 27-28 thousand pairs of feet enjoying these links every year, the club’s success is testament to its lasting design and layout. It’s challenging but is a clear favourite of many who have played it, with quick greens and well-defined fairways. It is a club proud of its history, even hosting an alternative Ryder Cup, with 12-man teams playing with pre1930’s hickory shafted clubs.
Whilst the course has remained largely unchanged, the clubhouse has been expanding to deal with the demands of the modern golfer. Whilst maintaining its charm and personality; it still has its original “Gentleman’s Locker Room and Bar”; the clubhouse is now able to cater for a range of events with style and comfort. Whilst the bar might be small, its stock is not, boasting an excellent array of beverages including over 80 different malt whiskeys (although we recommend you spread these out over a few visits). Warmth and friendliness lie at the heart of this club, and comments such as this find their way into almost every review. Visitors pay the same as members for food and drink; it is clear that Kilspindie Golf Club want to create an open community of golfers all of whom are drawn to the club by the same things; an incredible course in a stunning environment. It is no wonder, so many people are drawn back year after year and Kilspindie is recognised locally, nationally and internationally as a hidden gem of Scotland.
