For many people 2020 has been a year to forget. The pandemic has caused little short of chaos to a large part of the leisure sector with many organisations feeling a mighty hit from the fallout of the past six months or so. Golf however has been a rather different story! As a magazine we are in constant contact with a lot of club secretaries and managers, which gives us an ideal insight into the workings of many different golf clubs across the UK. Following various conversations, it seems that the golf industry has not been hit as badly as first thought. With golf being one of the last leisure facilities to close before lockdown and the first to reopen this has led to a large rise in new members for many clubs which has given somewhat of a financial silver lining to one of the darkest clouds this sport has ever seen. This has mainly been supported by a new generation of people taking up the sport, joining clubs and finding the major benefits of being a club member. Within this edition you will find a host of clubs all of which have some of the best golfing facilities in their regions. So, whether you are a golf society organiser, an individual looking to find out what courses in your region can offer or simply looking for a different course to play on a golf break, everything you need will be in the following pages. We hope that you enjoy reading this issue. The Editor

There’s ‘smart’, and then there’s drop-dead gorgeous. Meet the new SkyCaddie LX5C (Ceramic) GPS Smart Watch. Golf’s most desirable-looking wearable tech joins the award-winning 2020 SkyCaddie GPS family today in the form of the new LX5C with ceramic bezel GPS Smart Watch from SkyCaddie, makers of the most-trusted rangefinders in golf. The scratch-resistant, hard-wearing LX5C ceramic bezel holds its colour practically forever, and retains that ‘new’ look far longer than a traditional bezel – as seen by the recent trend towards ceramic materials in the luxury watch market. The stylish, handsome LX5C – which has identical functionality to the LX5 – is the closest thing to having one of SkyCaddie’s high-performance SX400 and SX500 rangefinders on your wrist.

Both LX5 models pack golf’s only truly comprehensive ground-mapped course data into the game’s largest and most-brilliant wearable HD colour touch screen at 1.39 inches. They both contain next-generation technology including powerful and popular features which are exclusive to SkyCaddie, such as HoleVue® and IntelliGreen® Pro in high definition.

“The LX5C is the most powerful and attractive GPS rangefinder golf has ever seen”

said James Holmes, SkyCaddie General Manager UK & Europe. “Adding the ceramic bezel adds yet more desirability to what was already golf’s mostpraised smart watch of 2020.

“It looks fabulous both on and off the golf course, but the LX5C is about way more than just good looks. Both versions of the LX5 exist to save you shots on the golf course, more than any other golf watch, pure and simple. “Because only SkyCaddie professionally creates and updates its course maps on foot, the LX5C gives you golf’s most accurate and up-to-date golf course information.” Packed with features from the award-winning SkyCaddie SX400 and SX500 handhelds, the LX5C delivers the best wearable HD golf graphics now available. Zoom and Pan to get the yardages you need, and enjoy intuitive, almost touch-free navigation while you play. LX5C has SkyCaddie’s proprietary HoleVue® technology, giving instant distances to any point on the hole in HD course graphics. Or, simply swipe up to see critical distances to all hazards, carries and layups on the current hole. LX5C shows everything between you and the green instantly, giving you the distances you need to plan your shot and avoid hazards – even if you can’t see them from where you are standing. It also features SkyCaddie’s patented and exclusive IntelliGreen® Pro technology, rotating the green’s exact shape to match your angle of attack, giving you the distances you need from where you stand including yardages to the major green contours. Even if you can’t see the putting surface your LX5C turns every approach shot into a scoring opportunity by providing the exact shape of the green plus front, carry and back distances and the distance to any other point on the green simultaneously. Try doing that with a laser! With a SkyCaddie, you are never blind.

Preloaded with over 35,000 ground-verified, fullcolour HD SkyCaddie course maps – unavailable on any other GPS watch apart from the LX5 – the SkyCaddie LX5C ceramic bezel GPS Smart Watch is ready to go out of the box, with a threeyear premium Worldwide Membership at no extra charge. Robust Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity enables you to easily sync your LX5C to get the latest course maps, or update your scores and stats wirelessly in your SkyGolf 360 account. The water-resistant LX5C boasts a hi-capacity rechargeable Li-Polymer battery that lasts up to two rounds (over three days in Time mode). It allows you to score as you play and track stats such as total score, total putts, fairway hit or miss, greens in regulation and much more. More LX5C features include: RangeVue® yardage arcs for easy club selection, shot distance measurement, multiple tee box options, gender selection, yards or meters option, digital scorecard and multi-constellation navigation satellite capability to enhance GPS tracking. The SkyCaddie LX5C comes with two userreplaceable, soft-touch silicon wristbands, and away from the golf course it also offers multiple watch faces and time-related functions, plus a Heart Rate Monitor and Step Counter with Distance Walked. SkyCaddie is golf’s only GPS brand which creates and updates every UK golf course map on foot. Professional SkyCaddie course mappers use survey-quality equipment recording thousands of points per course with sub-metre precision. The resulting maps are accessible by SkyCaddie users only. The SkyCaddie LX5C GPS Smart Watch retails for just £349.95 (€399.95), including a three-year premium Worldwide Membership. It joins the LX5 (£299.95), SX400 (£299.95) and SX500 (£379.95) in the 2020 SkyCaddie family.

FARLEIGH CELEBRATES 10 YEARS WITH 10 OF THE BEST

Farleigh Golf Club is celebrating 10 years of dramatic improvements, significant investment and increasing success after it was purchased by The Foxhills Collection in 2010 with 10 exclusive offers for its members, as well as giving away golf days worth £10k for local good causes. The club, located in Warlingham, is running a number of initiatives throughout September to celebrate its 10-year anniversary, including £10 member guest rates midweek and £10 off golf lessons. Previously known as Farleigh Court, the club was purchased by the Hayton family 10 years ago to form The Foxhills Collection, which also comprises the prestigious Foxhills Club & Resort located in Ottershaw. Since then, Farleigh has grown from strength to strength, with 2020 underpinning its success with a, very fitting, record year for membership sales.

The clubhouse refurbishment and remodelling included the installation of a number of contemporary meeting rooms and function spaces, which has seen it become a sought-after venue for corporate events and weddings, as well as the opening of the highly-regarded Nineteen bar and restaurant, renowned locally for its delicious Sunday carvery.

As a family-owned club, Farleigh has seen the personal attention and crucial investment that it needed from a new owner, who is now the longest of four, with more than £5 million spent on refurbishing the clubhouse and golf courses.

On the course, a number of substantial enhancements have also been made over the years to put the club on the map as one of the premier golf clubs in Surrey and a regular host of national PGA tournaments.

The stunning 27-hole venue is home to three ninehole courses, which can be played as three 18-hole loops, and all three have been revamped since Marc Hayton took the reins. The course’s original architects, John Jacobs Associates, were brought back to upgrade the 350-acre layout, which has also benefitted from a couple of new fleets of greenkeeping equipment costing more than £1 million alone, as well as a new irrigation and drainage system that makes it one of the best winter courses in the area. The club is proud of its ‘Farleigh Guarantee’ of no temporary greens or tees, meaning golfers can enjoy excellent course conditions at any time of the year in all weather conditions. This, combined with Farleigh’s well-presented fairways, USGA-standard greens and extensive range of practice facilities – which include a driving range, putting green and short game area – has seen it build an enviable reputation among golfers, with more than 600 members now on the books and more category one golfers than ever, thanks to the course conditions and competitive field.

The club is somewhat unrecognisable from what it was in 2010, with many members considering the golf course “neglected” before The Foxhills Collection took over. One of the club’s founder members and this year’s senior club champion, Len Coffill, said: “We have seen many changes over the last 22 years – some good and some not so good. “10 years ago The Foxhills Collection purchased Farleigh Golf Club and it was like a breath of fresh air, revamping the clubhouse into a superb 19th and an improvement in greenkeeping staff has developed a golf course where the greens are the envy of every golf club in Surrey.

“With the excellent appointment of James Ibbetson as general manager, the team is now complete and I have no doubt that the club will continue to thrive. We all look forward to an exciting future as part of The Foxhills Collection.” Sandra Miller, ladies committee member and former captain, echoed Coffill’s comments: “As a founder member of Farleigh Golf Club, joining in 1997, I have seen many changes within the club, including several owners and the deterioration of the courses. “Then, in 2010, The Foxhills Collection acquired Farleigh and turned the course and clubhouse around, creating a very family friendly environment, along with a championship course which hosts various professional events, and, in my opinion, the best practice facilities in the area. The staff throughout the club carry Marc’s vision and the membership has continued to grow – I am very proud to be a member of Farleigh.” The Foxhills Collection’s owner and managing director, Marc Hayton, said: “We are obviously delighted with the success and growth of Farleigh over the last 10 years, but the hard work has only really just started and we always have one eye on the future to make even more improvements. “The long-term plan, which we have shared with Tandridge Council, has always been to add features to Farleigh that its sister club Foxhills is known for – we want to add to the already excellent facilities to eventually transform Farleigh to a country club or resort. “Until then, we continue to offer great golf and a warm welcome.” If you are a local good cause within 10 miles of Farleigh, you can apply for a golf day worth up to £1,000 by emailing enquiries@farleighfox.co.uk. There are 10 to give away in total and terms and conditions apply.

British Golf Show doubles in size, moves to May 2021

The second British Golf Show has been re-scheduled for 14-15 May 2021, and will double in size to become the largest exhibition to date in the organisers’ eightyear history. The 2020 event’s originally-scheduled date of May was switched to early October when the pandemic hit, but a lack of clarity as to what will / will not be permitted as regards public gatherings next month has left exhibition organisers The Elite Luxury Events with no choice but to postpone. As the British Golf Show’s exhibition space was already fully-sold for the 2020 event, the 2021 British Golf Show will now take place across two Golf Halls at Wycombe Air Park to allow for extra exhibitors and public attractions. Extra capacity at Wycombe Air Park has been secured to make the expansion possible.

As originally planned the 2021 British Golf Show will take place alongside the long-running The Elite London luxury lifestyle exhibition, which also switches to the May 2021 dates. All current golf exhibitors have been personally contacted, and the Elite sales team are now taking bookings for the enlarged 2021 event. “With ongoing uncertainty about COVID-19, there simply isn’t time now for our exhibitors to prepare for a golf show in early October” said Alex Ayling, Managing Director of The Elite Luxury Events. “This gives us more time to build additional attractions into the event, and to make it an unforgettable day out for anyone with a love of golf. The sport of golf has by and large welcomed our initiative and we have appreciated everybody’s support during this most challenging of all years. We will now turn our focus to staging our largest-ever event in May 2021”

Uttoxeter Golf Club played host to the Robert Rock UK Junior Golf tour Uttoxeter Golf Club played host to the Robert Rock UK Junior Golf tour over the weekend with almost 100 young golfers, both girls and boys, aged from 6 to 18 from all over the country taking part. A bright, sunny but breezy day greeted the youngsters, most of whom were playing the course for the first time. The course is fairly challenging at the best of times, but the breeze strengthened as the day wore on making conditions more difficult for those teeing off later. Robert Rock is a EuropeanTour Professional Golfer who runs the UK junior tour event at 18 different venues throughout the country. The Uttoxeter club jumped at the opportunity to host a round of the 2020 tour, and it is hoped this may become a regular event on the clubs calendar. The day was a great success for the club, and Uttoxeter junior, Joe McCandless finished a very respectable 3rd in the under 18 category, recovering well from a difficult start in the strong wind. So well done Joe.

Callander Golf Club thanks local NHS heroes with ten free memberships. Callander Golf Club is showing its appreciation for local NHS workers who have worked bravely through the COVID-19 crisis by offering ten free memberships of the 130 year old club. The Club’s Committee wanted to do something to recognise the incredible efforts of the area’s NHS workers in recent months, and decided to offer ten free memberships for people joining the club for the first time - which would normally cost over £300. Golfers joining under the scheme will be granted full membership and can play unlimited golf until March 2021, subject to the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 related rules and regulations. The free memberships will be offered on a first come first served basis to the first ten local NHS workers to submit a membership application, which is available by emailing callandergolf@ btconnect.com. Applicants must live within the FK postcode area. If the offer is oversubscribed, eligible players who miss out on free membership will be able to join at a reduced rate of just £150.

Bob Harvey, who captains the club alongside Mary Harvey, said: “We all owe so much to the NHS in recent months. We hope that this small thank you from Callander Golf Club will help some of those heroic workers to relax a little. Our course is regarded as one of the most scenic in Scotland, and we hope the fresh air and beautiful views will be a salve for the soul of weary workers. “Whether they are brand new to golf or a competitive low handicap player, we look forward to welcoming our NHS heroes to our Club.” Callander Golf Club is a beautiful 18 hole course situated within The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Its 15th hole is regarded as one of the most challenging Par 3s in the country.

Canterbury Golf Club Launches New Winter Alliance Competition

September 2020, Canterbury, Kent: Canterbury Golf Club, The PGA and specialist installers of virtual reality golf simulators, Reality Golf, have joined forces to launch a new Winter Alliance competition to be played over Canterbury’s famed Harry Colt-designed championship course in Kent. The format of the Canterbury PGA Winter Alliance gives amateurs with a maximum handicap of 12 the opportunity to play with and compete against some of the best Professionals in the south of England. The Harry Colt-designed Canterbury Golf Course in Kent Roger Hyder, General Manager of Canterbury Golf Club (www.canterburygolfclub.co.uk), comments “We are really pleased to be working with a golfrelated company like Reality Golf in bringing this exciting tournament to the club. “When Chris Stock and Darren Coumbe, Directors of Reality Golf, approached us with the idea of running such an innovative event, we jumped at the chance.” Reality Golf, established just 18 months ago, specialises in custom-built golf studios working with two of the best launch monitors on the market, Trackman and Foresight. “As a relatively young company, we are very proud to be working with two great organisations in the golf industry; The PGA and Canterbury Golf Club,” says Stock.

“Since we started a year and a half ago, we have been installing studios around the world and have had to open an international office in Dubai to cope with the interest and demand. We have been also commissioned by individuals to install studios installation in their private homes as well as by schools, driving ranges, golf shops and other golf clubs. Pros love the system as it has proved to increase teaching revenue and club sales. “By supporting this new competition t Canterbury, we hope to raise the profile of Reality Golf whilst at the same time putting something back into the game of golf,” he concludes. There will be five winter meetings with a grand final played on the 9th April, 2021. The competition is an individual stableford with the top ten competitors in each event earning points towards an Order of Merit. First place in each event will earn 12 points, 2nd will earn 10 points, 3rd place gets 8 points and thereafter 7, 6, 5, 4 etc.

Though first laid out as a downland course, the gradual introduction of oaks and silver birches along the fairways has altered the nature of the layout that now has more of a parkland feel, though a little gorse and broom can be found on some holes. Set on undulating terrain, the par71, 6,272-yard layout (off the whites) provides a challenging round of golf with its mix of open par 5s, tight par 4s and challenging par 3s.

Dates of the Winter Alliance: Friday, 23rd October Friday, 20th November Friday, 11th December The top ten amateurs and top ten professionals will then be invited to enter the April final which will be run alongside another competition on the same day for those who did not qualify for the final. . The entry fee per event, which includes a bacon bap and coffee on arrival, is £45 for both Professionals and Amateurs whilst Canterbury Golf Club members will benefit from an entry fee of just £35. The field is restricted to 60 competitors per event so higher handicap amateurs may have to be balloted. Located on the outskirts of Kent’s medieval cathedral city, Canterbury Golf Club was founded in 1927 on 160 acres of land leased from the War Office and today is considered to be one of the finest examples of Harry Colt design in England.

Clayton, DeVries & Pont appointed to advise Calcot Park Golf Club Clayton, DeVries & Pont (“CDP”) is delighted to announce that it has been retained by Calcot Park Golf Club near Reading, England to author a longterm plan for its course and advise on prospective renovations thereafter. Opening in 1930 and laid out around an imposing Georgian mansion on the site of what was originally the manor house of Tilehurst Manor, the course was designed by HS Colt with the assistance of JSF Morrison and is a challenging par 70 of 6,300 yards in length. Frank Pont, Partner, says: “Although perhaps not quite as well known as someof Mr Colt’s other courses in southern England, Calcot Park has all the hallmarks of his prowess. It has beautiful green complexes and its four short holes are up there with some of the very best in his repertoire. I am very excited to have been asked to help restore the course and am confident that my colleagues and I will be able to enhance it significantly in a manner that will be respectful of its architectural heritage.”

Contact: +44 7785 227922 www.calcotpark.com

Edward Cartwright, Head of Operations for the UK & Ireland, says: “Given his immense experience in renovating and restoring courses designed by Harry Colt and his partners, Frank Pont will act as lead architect for this project. Indeed, Calcot Park will be the 31st Colt course in Europe and the US to which he will be providing his expertise. Six of his current Colt clients are listed in Golf World’s most recent list of the top fifty courses in Continental Europe. His dedication to rigorous and detailed research allied with a profound knowledge of Colt’s work delivers courses which are more fun to play, more pleasing on the eye and respectful of their origins. Mike Clayton and Mike DeVries will be assisting with this project as and when needed.” Michael Deller-Merricks, General Manager, Calcot Park Golf Club, says: “We’re delighted to be working with Frank, Edward and everyone involved at CDP. Our ambition is to be one of the top 100 courses in England and this is the start of an incredibly exciting journey for the Club. I have no doubt that with CDP’s wealth of knowledge and expertise in restoring Harry Colt courses, we will be able to achieve our goal within the next 10 years.” About CDP: Clayton, DeVries & Pont is a partnership of three of the world’s foremost golf architecture practices – Clayton Golf of Melbourne, Australia, DeVries Designs of Traverse City, Michigan and Infinite Variety Golf Design of Den Dolder, The Netherlands. Loudoun Gowf Club

The west coast of Scotland celebrates its glorious past with an eye clearly on the future. In 1860, the Open first came to the west coast of Scotland, when it was played at Prestwick. Since this time, the competition has become the greatest golfing event in the world with Ayrshire firmly at its heart. There are over fifty golf courses to choose from in Ayrshire and Arran. Visitors can choose from classic links to majestic inland layouts. The open was first played in South Ayrshire in October 1860. Eight golf professionals including Willie Park Snr and Old Tom Morris played three rounds over the 12-hole Prestwick course in one day. Over 150 years later, the Open Championship remains golf’s most prestigious professional tournament and Ayrshire retains its golfing heritage with two Open Championship venues located in the region. The uniquely named, Loudoun Gowf Club offer some fantastic green fee rates for visitor as well as some of the most reasonably-priced membership packages in Ayrshire, the home of golf.

Although the club has standard green fee rates for weekdays, Loudon Gowf offers significant savings for certain times of the day, particularly if players are prepared to avoid the busiest times. A range of last minute deals are also at the club’s website, loudongowfclub.co.uk The club has two buggies that can be booked online. If you require a golf clubs, trolleys, caddies or catering for your group this can also be arranged at the time of booking with competitive rates available to regular visitors as well as first time guests.

A proud history and bright future The Gowf Field of Loudoun dates back to the private gowf field of the Loudoun family; with gowf having been played on the land for over 400 years. It is believed that the land has never been under a plough, therefore the turf at Loudoun is unique and probably among the finest of any inland golf course. Golf on the land in Gaston dates back to as early as 1908. When in 1960, the Countess of Loudoun died; the estate was divided to form part of the Loudoun Gowf Club that can be enjoyed today. Later, in 1966 work began on the clubhouse to be formerly opened one year later, in 1967. Today, the comfortable clubhouse surroundings are the home to tales of what might have been, as well as well stocked bars and excellent dining options.

Since 1974, most expenditure has been on the course itself with investment in the tools and fertilisers needed to keep the course in the most pristine of conditions. However, in recent years, the golf course has taken a new look with tress lining the fairways and changes to the shape of some of the holes. The greens are larger than they had previously been but still present a stern test for all levels of golfer.

Why not see for yourself? Ayrshire and the surrounding terrain encompasses arguably the finest collection of links golf courses in the world and with quality accommodation, fine dining, heritage and charisma on its doorstep offers a truly unique experience. Boasting spectacular views over the River Clyde, the great facilities on offer in the region are coupled with the region’s close proximity to the centre of Glasgow where you can choose from a host of accommodation and entertainment providers.

Milford Haven Golf Club

Although a small county, Pembrokeshire offers some truly excellent golfing choices and is packed full of memorable blend of links and parkland style golf courses all with breath-taking panoramic views of the surrounding coast and countryside. Famed for its beautiful beaches and views, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park features its own championship parkland venue, Milford Haven Golf Club. Steeped in history and set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, visitors are assured of an unforgettable time with so much to see and do for all the family. Arguably the best golf club in West Wales, Milford Haven Golf Club has built a reputation for high quality golf, facilities and service. The par 70 golf course measures 6,067 yards from the championship white tees and is set up for all-year-round playability. In fact, the course is presented as well in the winter months as it is during the summer. The Milford Haven course begins with a series of picturesque pond holes, which are strategically placed to catch any wayward shots. It then meanders to the middle of the golf course where views of the National Park countryside and Milford Estuary can be enjoyed.

On April 3rd 2019 the club held the opening ceremony and competition to celebrate the redesign of the signature 18th hole. ‘Fountain View’, the new eighteenth hole at Milford Haven Golf Club was formally opened by a group of rugby players from the current Welsh national team and led by Welsh rugby legend Scott Quinnell. The opening was followed by a Texas Scramble where some of the Welsh heroes played in groups alongside existing Milford Haven members.

The Welsh Rugby Stars open the new 18th at Milford Haven. For the development of the 18th, Milford Haven’s management team obtained the architectural services of well-known and experienced course developer, Marc Westenborg who set about utilising the natural landscape which encompassed the existing green. Marc added a water feature adjacent to the Pine trees to create indecision as to taking the driver or laying up and also added two new bunkers to guard the front left hand side of the putting surface. The new 18th at Milford Haven represents a challenge to golfers and calls for a few decisions to be made when standing on the 18th tee!

The imposing Milford Haven clubhouse building overlooks Fountain View and contains all of the amenities that you would expect from a first class golfing venue. The club’s first class facilities include Fountain View restaurant, serving mouth-watering dishes to suit all palates, well-stocked bars and comfortable lounges with stunning views over the golf course.
