The powerful words of Paul recorded in Romans 8:38-39 raise a very important question. Consider the text: “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This amazing, comforting, inspiring, and edifying statement makes me want to know what prompted Paul to make this declaration. The only explanation I can find after reading all of his writing is the cross of Jesus Christ. If a picture is worth a thousand words, the evidence of love revealed in the substitutionary death of our Savior is worth more than all the God honoring words in all of the vocabulary of all of the people of the earth and the angels in heaven. What love is this! Divine, complete, sufficient, and eternal, and it is pouring out to you, me, and all this world right now. How wonderful it is to know this love and to be able to be lifted up by it every day and to share it with loved ones, friends, and strangers. It is theirs too. THIS IS
our story by Amber Siler
Luke 24:13-35 tells the
story of two travelers. These two people were walking to a village called Emmaus on the day that Jesus was reported to have risen from the dead. They were familiar with Jesus and his teachings and probably had been followers of His ministry. But after Jesus is crucified, they set out on a journey, presumably a journey back home. Imagine yourself in their shoes. Imagine that you have left behind your life, traveled miles away from home to sit under the teachings of a Man that you believed to be the promised Deliverer. Then, imagine that you see Him delivered instead into the murderous hands of the most “religious” people in Jerusalem by one of the men closest to Him. Can you imagine their
disappointment and hurt after learning of the death of the Man who claimed to be the Savior of the world? Can you imagine their confusion hearing claims that the tomb was found empty this morning? The travelers are discussing these events when they cross paths with a stranger going the same way, and they invite him to travel with them. This stranger seems at first to know nothing of the recent events in Jerusalem or of the death of Jesus of Nazareth. But then he begins to explain the scriptures so fully and perfectly that the travelers’ hearts begin to stir again inside of them. The sadness and despair at the death of the One that they thought would save them, begins to melt away as they listen to all of the February/March 2016 | Whitesburg

THIS IS OUR STORY prophecies concerning the Son of God. When they reach home, they invite the stranger to stay the night with them. He agrees and as they gather around the table to eat, the stranger takes bread, gives thanks and breaks it and gives it to them. With this act, their eyes are opened and they immediately recognize that this Man is Jesus Himself. Then Jesus disappears. Again, imagine yourself in their place. This Man that walked alongside you as you retreated from Jerusalem with sadness to return to your normal life, this Man who then reminded you of all God’s promises of a Savior, this Man that you invited into your home, took a seat at your table and then served you bread. This Man was the same Man who three days ago was put to death. He really did rise from the grave! And then He came and found you on your way back to unbelief… When I put myself into the

story, I am in awe. I imagine that revelation moment when all the pieces finally fit together and it is revealed that all the things Jesus said about Himself are true! He really is the Son of God. He really did come to save! Not only that, but on the day that He rose from the dead He took the time to seek me out, walk beside me and encourage me when I needed it most. We don’t really have to imagine ourselves in the story though, do we? This is our story. Our eyes were closed, our hearts were broken and we were headed our own way. Then, we met a Man who spoke truth into us and gave us the Bread of Life. Our eyes were opened to who He is. He is Jesus. He died for the sins of the world. He conquered death and is alive forevermore, and because He sought us out, we too have eternal life. I can’t think of a better reason to celebrate Easter than that.

The Right
FOCUS
by Jennifer Minor

WhitesburgBaptist.org
When I hear the word Easter,
I’m suddenly flooded with happy memories of fun family gatherings from my childhood. I think about cousins, egg hunts, dyeing eggs, new clothes, potluck, and chocolate! Cadbury Eggs! Need I say more? Easter is one of my favorite holidays. After reminiscing over past childhood Easter memories, my mind goes to the memories I am now making as I celebrate Easter with my children. The major difference is that now, as the mom, making these memories takes a lot more effort. Will we travel this year or will we host? What foods will I prepare? We need to get the Easter baskets out of the attic. Do we need new baskets? Or grass for the baskets? I’ll need to buy eggs, lots and lots of eggs, and egg dye, candy, gifts for the Easter baskets,
and of course clothes! I must purchase coordinating clothes. Do you know how difficult it can be to coordinate 8 people in new Easter clothes and to do it on a budget?! We will also need shoes, tights, hair bows, and other accessories. If I’m successful at pulling all of the outfits together, shouldn’t we have a picture made? Should we go to a studio? Hire a photographer? Or should I just arrange for a friend to snap a pic while we are all dolled up? Suddenly my mind is racing, and I’m not just enjoying happy memories. Now I’m starting to feel stressed. And unfortunately, if I’m being really honest, I have to admit that I have skipped right past the true reason for Easter altogether. Most of the friends I have talked to struggle with this same problem when it comes to Easter.

THE RIGHT FOCUS As moms who love the Lord, we desire to make Christ the center of all we do, but sometimes we get distracted, especially at Easter. Easter sneaks up on us and before we know it we are caught up in the hunt for stuff. Unlike Christmas, which we prepare for and focus on for weeks in advance, many of us have allowed Easter to be squeezed into one small weekend, if that. Last year, my children had a soccer game on the Saturday before Easter and my husband had to work a regular schedule both leading up to and following Easter. We basically only had Sunday to celebrate Easter. So what do we do about this? How do we keep our focus on the significance of Easter when we squeeze the holiday in between Saturday evening and Monday morning? We don’t need crafts or special activities to focus on Christ. What we really need is to heed the words of Psalm 46:10, “Be still...” If we take time to fix our minds and hearts on Jesus and what He did for us, we will have no trouble keeping our focus. Maybe we will still do the same activities, but our hearts will 10
WhitesburgBaptist.org
be different. Maybe if these activities push us to the point of missing Jesus, it might be time to reevaluate. It occurred to me that I search after many things at Easter... the right clothes, the right items needed to carry out our traditions, etc., but I often fail to search after the Giver of all these good things. I also often fail to focus on the wants and needs outside my family. I don’t want to give up egg hunts with the cousins, but I do want my children to remember more about Easter than just a basket full of colorful plastic eggs. The eggs are meaningless and empty. I want my children to know there’s more. There’s fullness and abundant life and so many gifts far greater than those that can fit into an Easter basket. Let’s take time to seek Jesus. He’s ready to be found when we slow down and look for Him. Let’s take time to serve someone outside the walls of our homes. Maybe instead of stressing about coordinating new clothes for our families, we pause to think about how we can bless those who have nothing at all to wear. The fun Easter activities and
traditions are great for making memories, but let’s build more meaningful memories, ones that have depth. Monday after Easter will come and if we aren’t careful and intentional all we will have to show for the day set aside to observe the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ is fake grass and a whole lot of laundry. I might still shop for new clothes, but my heart should not be so wrapped up in new clothes that I miss the big picture. So as I shop, I’ll meditate on what Christ wore on the day He rose from the dead. He wore new scars, nail holes in His hands. I’ll also seek to show my gratitude for His sacrifice by looking for opportunities to give to others. With these thoughts in mind, I’ll be a little less concerned about what clothes my family will wear on Easter Sunday. Our current culture may give us less time to celebrate Easter, but we don’t have to let the calendar limit us in our search
for Him. Let’s be intentional with our thoughts in the weeks and days leading up to Easter and beyond. There’s no rule that says you have to pack Easter away at dusk on Easter Sunday. He is always waiting for us to draw near. He’s waiting for us to seek Him. Every day is a good day to be still and focus on His death, burial, and resurrection whether it be Easter Sunday, the day after, or any day throughout the year. Our lives will be richer, and we will have more peace and joy when we focus on Him all year round. We will have abundant life! Keep your favorite traditions. For me that will likely include colorful egg hunts, coordinating clothes, and lots of Cadbury Eggs! Just be sure that the tradition that you put the most effort, thought, and energy into is in seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness!

An
EMPTY egg? by David Dye
Growing up, I remember
looking forward to Easter. The sugar high of Halloween had faded, as only the candies that no child could possibly like remained at the bottom of my bag, and the giant peppermint stick that always came in my Christmas stocking had at last been devoured (against all odds). Even the conversation hearts of Valentine’s were all gone as well as all the good pieces of chocolate from a red foil heart. It was time for more candy and Easter always delivered. Each year we would have a giant egg hunt at my grandparents’ house with all the cousins. In my family that was quite a crowd. Oh those beautiful pieces of hollow plastic filled with jellybeans and other sugary delights, how we all desired to find as many as possible. But, there was one egg that stood out among the rest - the Golden 12
WhitesburgBaptist.org
Egg. While it remained empty, it brought the best prize, cash! I’m not sure if I ever actually found the golden egg, but I’ll never forget how badly I wanted to. Looking back now, I wonder if the egg was left empty to teach us that the greatest gift on that first Easter morning was also something found empty. “On the first day of the week…the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. Then suddenly two angels appeared and said to them, Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he is risen.” (Luke 24:1–6) The Bible says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) No matter how good or religious people are, they cannot meet God’s standard of righteousness. This is why
God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins and bring us to God. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) What we all need most is much more important than jelly beans or even a cash prize. We all need a Savior and Christ has come so that we may be saved and have a personal relationship with Him. If you understand that all you ever needed was found in an empty tomb, you too can place your faith in Him and receive
Him as your Savior. All it takes is a simple prayer confessing your sin, your belief in Jesus Christ and his death, burial, and resurrection on your behalf, and your willingness to make Him the Lord of your life and to follow Him. Don’t go it alone - God never desired that for any of us. If you have prayed this prayer and would like more information about becoming a Christian, please call Whitesburg Baptist Church at (256) 881-0952 and ask to speak to one of the pastors.

They wanted
TO KNOW MORE by C. Rudd
As a two-year Journeyman
with the International Mission Board, there was not much about my first six months living in Central Asia that was easy. I was living in a very large city that had little in common with anything I had known or experienced. Just imagine adjusting to a totally new culture in a massive city with a difficult language to learn, while being almost consumed with homesickness. This city was a major immigrant magnet. I happened to be one of those. But the others were almost exclusively Muslim and many came from countries that were completely closed to foreigners and extremely hostile to Christians. However, while it was difficult, it was, at the very same time, also life changing! God brought me to a new and exhilarating level of fellowship
with Him and He encouraged and challenged me in innumerable ways. It was both the hardest and absolutely best experience of my life! Easter fell right at the conclusion of my first six months and marked a magnificent crescendo of our team’s ministry there that continued on throughout my term. A few weeks before Easter, my team and I were taking care of our usual business and taking any opportunity to meet people that came our way. We met some of our neighbors in the street and learned that they had recently moved there for work, but were having a hard time finding jobs. One of the guys on my team prayed to Jesus right there with them, asking Him to provide them with work. The next evening, we went to check in on February/March 2016 | Whitesburg

THEY WANTED TO KNOW MORE them and they were so excited to tell us that after the “holy man” prayed for them to find work, all four living in the apartment got jobs that night. They wanted to know more about the Jesus we prayed to because they said, “He answers prayers and must be the true God.” After a few weeks of meeting with them regularly, two of them surrendered their lives to Christ, trusting Him as their Lord and Savior! They began to tell their friends and started inviting other Muslims to our apartment to study the Bible. As a result, a small house church was started in our apartment. When Easter arrived, we had people from four of the most closed and difficult to reach Muslim countries celebrating the resurrection of Christ! And on that glorious Easter day, the other two neighbors, as well as one other in attendance, put
their faith in Christ! It was hard to comprehend that one of those new believers was from a people group with no other known believers! That is an Easter service I will never forget. Those first months had plenty of challenges, and holidays were admittedly some of the more difficult times, but one thing was never more clear during that time - God was ever present and near. He was orchestrating magnificent things! On that wondrous Easter, God reminded me of the purpose for which He had called me—to share the Good News that Christ took our sins upon His sinless life and died the death that we deserve, so we might live in fellowship with Him. And this incredible Good News is evident through Christ’s power over death in His resurrection, which is the reason we celebrate Easter.

Having grown up as a missionary kid in Brazil, I was used to the
fairly similar traditions surrounding Easter both there and in the U.S. In both countries we celebrated with sunrise services, passion plays, and chocolate treats. I was somewhat curious about the Easter customs of other countries around the world, so I spent some time this afternoon with my good friend Google. And I found some really interesting Easter traditions! First, and one of my favorites, comes from Bermuda. Way back in the day, a local teacher from the British Army had a hard time explaining Christ’s ascension to Heaven to his Sunday School class. So, being a creative one, he made and flew a kite to illustrate Christ rising into Heaven. The kids finally understood! Now, Bermudians celebrate Good Friday by flying home-made kites made with colorful tissue paper, wood, metal and string, and having long tails. Sounds fun, right? Here’s a good one that my six year old nephew would love to be a part of. In Austria, the church bells are eerily silent between Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday morning because, according to religious lore, all the church bells fly to Rome during that time. Instead, the “Ratschenbuben” (altar boys with wooden rattles) go around town making a lot of noise with their ratschen, saying prayers and singing rhymes! The next tradition tugs at my mommy heart. In the Philippines, Easter morning begins before dawn with a procession of little girls dressed as angels. The men, led by an image of the resurrected Christ, make up another procession, while the women form a third procession, following a black veil-clad Mary. When the three processions finally meet at the church, it symbolizes Christ meeting and consoling His mother after His resurrection. Then the little girls remove Mary’s veil of mourning, and the procession changes February/March 2016 | Whitesburg

LET’S GO FLY A KITE! into one of light and festivity! Speaking of festivity, in many towns in Spain, Easter is celebrated with processions of incredibly elaborate floats called “tronos.” The tronos are decorated with figures representing part of the Easter story and are often covered in gold, silver, fine cloths and lots of fresh flowers. Forty or fifty people might carry each trono on their shoulders during the procession. In Murcia, a tronos telling the story of the Last Supper has real food on the table. On Easter Sunday, the twenty-six men who have carried the table in the procession around the town get to sit down and eat the food! My final search took me to the village of Oberammergau, in Bavaria, southern Germany. This village boasts an amazing legacy. In 1633, gripped by war, poverty and plague, the villagers vowed to put on a “passion play”
every ten years if God would save the village. They survived, and they kept their promise! The villagers put on the first Oberammergau Passion Play in 1634 and for the past 382 years, their descendants have carried out their pledge. Every ten years, the villagers devote a year of their lives to re-enacting the life, death and resurrection of Christ. The play is performed every day, all day, from May to October and has become quite an attraction, with people coming from all over the world to see it. By taking on their roles in the Passion play, the villagers are fulfilling the promise to God made by their ancestors, celebrating their faith and sharing it with the world. So, wherever you live, and whatever your Easter traditions, remember that people all over the world are also celebrating Jesus’ resurrection in their own ways. As for me, this year my daughter and I may fly a kite!

Probably one of the most iconic photos ever taken occurred on November 4, 1948. It depicts President-elect Harry S.
