A Parent’s

Prayer

by Dr. Jimmy Jackson

As I was walking into

the Worship Center one day, a mother and daddy stopped me. It was easy to see that they were very sad and deeply concerned. They asked me to pray for their family. One of their children had turned away from the Lord and wanted nothing to do with them and the other children in the family. I listened with a pain in my heart for them. Most of us can identify all too well with these parents. As parents and grandparents we are not exempt from such heartbreaking experiences. This old sin sick world is hard 2

WhitesburgBaptist.org

on families and especially our parents and their relationship with their “precious” children. At times they do not seem to be so precious. In fact, they may seem like strangers. We remember when they were born. What a blessing! Parents and grandparents fill their smart phones with hundreds of Kodak moments. How strange that those darling little babies can be a source of heartache. Of course, it would not hurt so much if we did not care so much. Our Father cares even more for us when we are not acting like a respectable and well behaved child.

My point is this. I think it startles people sometimes, and what I said is a foundational truth. I listened to and felt the pain of that sweet couple, and I responded. “I will certainly join you in praying for your child, but let me remind you that I can never pray with the urgency and passion that you will pray, because I can never be as close to your child as you.”

God has given parents a unique relationship with their children. Your prayers will be much more powerful than mine, just like my prayer for my children will be more powerful than your prayer for my children. We can pray for each other’s families, but nobody can pray like we can for our own. What a special place God has given to parents at His Throne of Grace in prayer.

Reaching into

a child’s life

by Rev. Guy Morton

Wouldn’t it be nice if every child had all their needs met in their family while growing up? But let’s be real. Every family has struggles raising their children, but some families have issues that cause kids to not develop positively. One major issue is often the absence of a father in the home. Psalm 68:5 tells us that God is a “father to the fatherless.” Sometimes, God places a person in the right place at the right time to be a mentor to a fatherless kid: to build up, spend time with and develop a positive relationship with a child. Besides helping them develop, the child will forever hold the memory that somebody cared enough to intervene and reach into their lives. In the past 17 years as Children’s Minister here at Whitesburg Baptist Church, I have repeatedly seen God take children who needed a mentor, 6

WhitesburgBaptist.org

advocate and friend and place them in an environment with a person who was willing to be one. Here are just a few of the relationships I have been privileged to witness. Let’s start with Derrick, a young boy who lost his dad when he was just a toddler. His mom had to work full-time and he had no consistent male figure in life. I made sure he had a ride to church, opportunities for camp and took him on outings to build a relationship with him. As the years went by, an unspoken relationship and bonding began to occur that was impactful in both our lives. Now, as a high schooler, Derrick is playing football, bringing himself to church on Sundays and volunteering when he can. Even more exciting, Derrick is determined to finish high school. Statistics tell us that 75% of all prisoners were high school dropouts, and dropouts

are ineligible for 86% of jobs in America. Derrick refuses to be part of that statistic. Luke was a closed-hearted kid from a financially stressed family whose mom was living on welfare. Luke had an attitude that seemed to say, “Hey, I don’t need to listen to anyone. Who cares about me anyway?” Luke was invited to attend Vacation Bible School and our church camp, and some teachers from those activities took an interest in his well-being and kept in touch with him. After several outings with Luke, the teachers began to notice that this kid with an edge had begun to show respect and love back. Not long ago, when one of his mentors dropped by school for a meeting, Luke saw him and without thinking ran over and gave him a bear hug. Unconditional love strikes again! Now Luke rarely misses a Sunday or our afterschool program. Mentoring is not just for boys.

Young girls from dysfunctional homes are in grave need of supportive and mature relationships also. Kari was such a girl who was being led down a dark path by an older adult for the wrong reasons. While this growing relationship made Kari uneasy, it was also attractive, since she had many emotional needs that were unmet while growing up. But, thank God, a sweet lady who was volunteering at the school cared enough to build a positive relationship with Kari which allowed her to open up about these uneasy feelings. As a result, Kari was rescued. The cost? Just taking time to care and be there. Connor was headed for the ‘normal’ cycle of a faithless lifestyle: dropped out of school early and picked up some nasty habits. It was what often happened in his neighborhood. Then he started riding the Whitesburg bus to church June/July 2017 | Whitesburg

7

REACHING INTO A CHILD’S LIFE on Sundays. The bus route coordinator noticed him, drew him in and became a heroine in his life. She brought him to LIFE Groups and church activities for several years. She gave him responsibilities at church and on ministry outings. Not only did Connor become a believer in Christ, but he began to love serving God and others. Connor is now in college and has huge plans for his life, all because one woman took the time to invest in him. God used countless mentors in the Bible to prepare younger people for life and service in His Kingdom. Joshua had Moses.

Elisha had Elijah. The disciples had Jesus. Timothy had Paul. Think about the impact these mentors had on their lives and the resulting service to God and others. Before Debbie and I had children, I was one who avowed that my kids would never do this or that! But a few years later our daughter Alison was born and all that philosophical meandering went out the window. Later our son Daniel came along and everything we thought we had learned from Alison suddenly took us in a totally different direction. Having a boy changed from baby dolls and pink dresses to worms, grasshoppers, and a

variety of other critters found in Daniel’s pockets as Debbie prepared to do the laundry. Today we have five grandchildren that continue to keep life interesting. Grandchildren visits always necessitate Debbie spending hours cleaning the house in preparation of their arrival. Personally I feel much of the fuss is unnecessary because within five minutes after their arrival the house is quickly

It’s as easy So

often

we present salvation as something very complex, but God never intended it to be that way. God’s plan of salvation is simple enough for everyone to understand. It is as easy as ABC.

Admit

Have you ever heard that the first step to solving a problem is admitting you have a problem? We all have a problem in that we were created for fellowship with God yet, because of sin in our lives, we are separated from Him. Often we think of sin as a list of things we shouldn’t do. Some realize that there is also the failure to do what we should. Both of these are just symptoms of the the real issue. Sin is a refusal to acknowledge God’s authority over our lives. The first step toward salvation is to admit that you are a sinner and in need of salvation from sin. Romans 3:10 – “Since none of us is perfect, all of us are sinners.” Romans 3:23 – “For all have 12

WhitesburgBaptist.org

sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death.”

Believe

It doesn’t end there. Admitting you have a problem certainly doesn’t fix it. To do that we must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He is the only way to obtain salvation – to get to heaven. Although we have done nothing to deserve His love and salvation, God wants to save us. John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 14:6 – “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

Confess

Finally, we must confess both our sin and faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

as I John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” Romans 10:9-10 – “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” You can do that with a simple prayer like this one: “Lord Jesus, I am a sinner. But I believe that you died upon the cross for me. That you shed your precious blood for the forgiveness of my sin. And I believe that on the third day, you were raised from the dead, and went to Heaven to prepare a place for me. I accept you now as my Savior, my Lord, my God, my friend. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus, and set me free from my sin. And, because you are my Savior, Jesus, I shall not die, but have everlasting life. Thank you, Jesus!”

The words aren’t magic. You can say them over and over but if they are not from your heart they will be for no affect. Yours may sound a little different but that’s OK, what is important is your heart.

Now what?

The Bible describes a new believer as a new creation and even as a newborn. 1 Peter 2:2 “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation…” Just as you would never expect a newborn baby to grow and make it on its own, neither will you. Find a good Bible believing/ teaching church and share with them the decision you have made. If you don’t know one we would love to celebrate with you and help nourish you in your new life. Please contact Whitesburg Baptist Church at 256-881-0952 and tell the receptionist you want to share your salvation decision with a pastor. It will be the best call we receive all day. “I Wanna Go Back” is a reflective song by David Dunn from his new album “Yellow Balloons.” In a recent interview he gave with Kevin Davis, David shares the story behind the song.

Please tell me the personal story behind this song. This song specifically is me thinking about kids. As adults, myself especially, when we speak about kids we tend to speak in a derogatory way. “Stop acting like a kid” is something we say regularly. In the Bible, Jesus is overwhelmingly positive in His language when He talks about kids. So much so that He encourages us to be more like kids, not less like them. Matthew 18:2-4 (NIV): “He called a little child and had him stand among them. And He said: ‘I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.’”

What is the takeaway message?

Especially when it comes to 14

WhitesburgBaptist.org

faith, Jesus calls us to have faith like a child. The song is about how when I was a child, I understood that Jesus was, He existed and He loved me. Then I grew up, and I felt like faith became a theological mountain that I had to scale. The further I got up this mountain, that was indicative of my faith growing. That’s the rut we get in as adults, that we think we’re so smart that we get stupid. I want to go back and remind myself that when it comes to faith, the important things are that Jesus is, He exists and He loves me.

“Oh, you poor thing… how

are you surviving?” This was often the sentiment of well-meaning older ladies when they saw me tugging, pulling and dragging three boys under the age of ten to church every time the doors were open. “Surviving? I am THRIVING!” They would stare at me in disbelief, thinking that I had lost my mind. I was made to be a boy mom – no matter how many times I thought I was going to be a girl mom. God fulfilled that overwhelming desire to be a mother by entrusting me with three amazing sons. I remember Ethan coming home from kindergarten at Trinity Christian Academy and telling me that he did not have to go to first grade. When pressed,

he said that he had already learned everything he needed to know in Mrs. Hick’s class. Wow. A dropout after kindergarten. Where had I failed as a mother? If only that was the worst “mom fail” in my years of nurturing and leading them! Thankfully, by the time first grade rolled around, he had decided that he probably had a little more to learn. Fast forward a few years and we were living on a farm, waiting for our house to be finished. As we were moving into the new house, the chore of cleaning the barn apartment we had rented for six months fell on me. Justin was with me and decided to go downstairs and rummage June/July 2017 | Whitesburg

17

SNIPS AND SNAILS AND PUPPY DOG TAILS through Uncle Max’s stuff. I was vacuuming upstairs and it was growing darker and darker outside. Finally, I was done and was going downstairs to load the car, all the while thinking he was with Uncle Max and Aunt Elizabeth in the main house. He was not. He was screaming at the top of his lungs, stuck in their son’s dog box. He had crawled inside and the door had locked behind him… and I could not hear him. That was my second Mother of the Year award. And, there was the ski trip. Ethan was learning to snowboard, Justin and Logan were in ski school, and I was trying to get in a few short runs while they were in their group classes. Logan’s instructor was having a little trouble with him because Logan did not want to ride the ski lift. Mr. Ricky, from Australia, told Logan that Logan would not get a lolly (a lollipop) if he did not go with the group. Justin was absolutely mortified when Logan would not cooperate, but it was about to go downhill (pun intended) from there. Answering a phone call from the Ski School, I was told that I needed to come by for a moment. I arrived to see 18

WhitesburgBaptist.org

Justin in shock as Logan had just told Mr. Ricky that he was “not the boss of him.” It was yet another very proud moment in our family history. Yes, boys are strong-willed. They are difficult. They are stubborn and often rebellious. They are sharp-tongued. They are also – at times – kind, generous, friendly, caring, smart, and just downright funny. After my salvation, they have been the three greatest blessings of my life. My man-children have endured unimaginable trials in their lives, yet God has been faithful to give me what I needed at each of those times to fully minister to them. I became a single mom when Logan was two, Justin was five, and Ethan was nine. I knew that I would need good, godly men and women to stand in the gap for them, not because I was not there for them – but because they needed to see how to be men, and especially how to be godly men. They also needed to see godly marriages in action; they needed to see affection, loyalty, love (the verb and the emotion), perseverance, trust, and forgiveness exercised

in everyday marriages that honored God. I could not give them that as a single mom – but God was so faithful to honor my prayers. From my parents to our friends and church family to coaches and teachers, that prayer was answered in the affirmative. I would encourage the men out there who are seeking to serve and to honor Christ, to consider mentoring our future generation of men as so many did for my sons. It could be a fishing excursion, a men’s retreat, acting in a leadership role in Children’s or Student Ministry,

or just attending a baseball game to cheer on a young man in need of affirmation. And, let them see you hug your wife; let them hear you say, “I love you” – and mean it; let them see you faithfully serving in the local church. You cannot begin to imagine the impact you will have on the next generation. You may just be an answer to prayer. You may even be the catalyst that brings these young men to Christ.

Highlighting Issues

Equipping Families

Parenting is hard! We can help. We’ve surveyed our families at Whitesburg and compiled a list of the Top Ten Parent Concerns based upon where difficulties arise most frequently in the home. From spiritual development to grades to sexual knowledge, we’ve collected resources that will assist you in raising your children as God intended. Listed here are the Top Ten Parent Concerns. For more information and resources, visit the HomePoint Center at Whitesburg Baptist Church or WhitesburgBaptist.org/HomePoint.

Spiritual Development Passing a strong faith to our children begins by having a strong faith ourselves and modeling the gospel in our marriages and how we relate to those closest to us.

Integrity

Supporting a child through choices he or she makes means 22

WhitesburgBaptist.org

trusting the Spirit to guide the child to stronger spiritual choices.

Technology

Technology can help us stay connected or it can keep us distracted and work against our relationship with God and each other.

Communication From womb to world, a child is made to seek connection. The type of relationship he or she has with mother, father, and caretaker transfers into every other future connection.

Peer Acceptance & Relationships

A self-confident child can stand on the foundations of healthy faith and family. Hurting people hurt others. Godly parents use the lens of God’s love to help a child respond to such challenges.

Self-Image, Gifts, Talents

Truly observing your child’s choices, energy, and delights can assist you in providing enriched environments for exploration and growth.

Sexual Knowedge

Building on the foundation of a healthy relationship, parents can provide open and positive age-appropriate dialogue about a p p ro p r i a te / i n a p p ro p r i a te touch, anatomical parts and function, and honoring God’s creation plan.

Making Grades, Working Hard, & Self-Discipline Allowing children to see what it takes to live on earth requires openness on the part of the parent of his or her own journey. How does the parent problem solve and provide for self and family? What and who motivates and organizes him or her?

Financial Awareness and Responsibility

Parents desire that their children become wise in financial management without becoming burdened with adult responsibility until it is time for them to try their wings as young adults.

Apathy, Procrastination and Independence

One of the most difficult issues to deal with as a parent is apathy. After making sure that it is not due to a physiological struggle, a parent has to look at the child’s sense of helplessness. God sees us as wonderfully made, but sometimes we don’t see what He sees. June/July 2017 | Whitesburg
