Gas Grill Best for: efficiency and ease. Gas grills are the most common type of grill. There are two types of fuel available: liquid propane and natural gas. Propane is the more popular option, as most consumers don't have a natural gas supply available to tap into for their grilling needs. Gas grills heat up quickly and provide a quick cook time at high heat. Due to this convenience, they are typically more expensive. Cleanup is also relatively easy and only requires brushing the grate. However, you may not be able to get that smoky taste other grills can offer.
Charcoal Grill Best for: getting both the chargrilled and smoky flavors. While these grills may seem more high maintenance, they are a perfect way to get an intense, smoky flavor. These grills use charcoal briquettes, wood chips, or a combination of the two to cook food. Cook time is typically longer with a charcoal grill than with an alternative fuel source; the charcoal can take around 30 minutes to heat before it's ready to grill. The charcoal turns to ash during the grilling, so regular cleanup is required. Additionally, charcoal needs to be replenished regularly. These grills also require regular attention, as vents are used to monitor and adjust the cooking temperature.
Wood Pellet Grill Best for: versatility. Wood pellet grills do it all. They combine the best features from other cookers so that you can grill, smoke, bake, and barbecue with precision and ease. Pellet grills require electricity and wood pellets as a dual fuel source. Temperature is relatively precise with a pellet grill, so not much attention or regulation is required.
Smoker Best for: smoking meats. While smokers are technically not considered grills, they are a very popular outdoor cooking option. Smokers come in a variety of fuel types, like charcoal, electric, or gas. Very similar to wood pellet grills, smokers rely on a combination of wood and water for added flavor. This cooking method relies on a lengthy cook time at a steady, low temperature. This makes them best at smoking big racks or cuts of meat for a mouthwatering meal.
