About the Conductor

Xiaosha Lin currently serves as the director of choral acXviXes at Whitworth University. Known as a dynamic conductor with her efficient and engaging rehearsal approach, her choirs are osen praised as “sang with strength, beauty, creaXvity, and such musicality.” Under her direcXon, the Whitworth Choir was recently named the winner of The American Prize in Choral Performance, 2024. As a conductor, Lin was previously selected as a conducXng fellow in several presXgious programs where she worked with Simon Carrington, Edith Copley, David Hayes and Lucinda Carver and made her France debut in 2019. She was also selected as one of the semifinalists in the Graduate Student ConducXng CompeXXon at the NaXonal American Choral Director AssociaXon Conference. As a singer, she had performed regularly at the Kimmel Center, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center under the batons of Yannick Nézet Séguin, Alan Gilbert, Simon Ragle and Jane Glover.

Lin is a sought-aser conductor, adjudicator and choral clinician in both the U.S. and China, where she was invited to workshops and clinics for all levels of choirs. She has frequently adjudicated in middle and high school choral fesXvals in the Pacific Northwest and Midwest regions.

Lin received her doctor of musical arts in choral conducXng at Michigan State University, master of music in choral conducXng at Westminster Choir College, master of arts in music at Hong Kong BapXst University, and bachelor of arts in music educaXon at Xinghai Conservatory of Music.

About the Ar,sts

Lauded as a “young lyric soprano with serious star power” (Local Pasadena News), Chloe Sundet is a crossover arXst sought aser for operas, musicals, and concerts. She has performed with companies such as Pacific Opera Project, Opera Neo, Hawaii Performing Arts FesXval, American Contemporary Ballet, and Wenatchee Valley Symphony. Her performance of Mabel in Pacific Opera Project’s producXon of The Pirates of Penzance received criXcal acclaim from reviewers across Los Angeles. As a concert soloist, Sundet has sung Mozart’s Great Mass in C, Handel’s Messiah, and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Ballet. She is a Whitworth alum and holds a Masters of Music in Vocal Arts and Opera from the University of Southern California.

Nicole Sonbert has disXnguished herself as a dynamic mezzo-soprano. With repertoire that includes roles such as Madame Flora in Menot’s The Medium and Bugercup in Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore. Her performances of Handel’s Messiah and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor have resonated deeply with audiences. Nicole holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and has been influenXal as a voice faculty member at various insXtuXons. Currently, she is the Director of Voice at Eastern Washington University, Director of MusicFest Northwest, and Assistant Editor for Youth Vocal Repertorie with the African Diaspora Music Project.

Sheila Kearney Sloan earned a BA in Music, an MA in Music Therapy, an MM in Vocal Performance and a Ph.D. Interdisciplinary exploring Gender. She has given numerous solo recitals during her career teaching in Music and Honors at Washington State University. As a mezzo soprano soloist, she has performed Verdi’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah with the Lexington Philharmonic and the Washington Idaho Symphony. Previously, she appeared with The Long Beach Grand Opera, The Opera of Central Kentucky and The New Jersey Opera. Having taught at the University of Idaho, Eastern Washington University, and Washington State University, she is happy to be at Whitworth!

Sco; David Miller, tenor, is director of voice studies and professor of music at Whitworth University. A versaXle singing actor, his naXonal and internaXonal performance credits cross mulXple genres including opera, oratorio, musical theatre and recital. A proponent of new works, Miller has premiered commissioned works by Mark Adamo, Brent Edstrom, Christopher Stanichar, and Randall Snyder. OperaXc premieres include Carlysle Floyd’s Cold Sassy Tree and Libby Larsen’s Eric Hermannson’s Soul. A naXonally and internaXonally recognized pedagogue, in 2023 Miller was awarded an InternaXonal Scholar Award from Mahidol University in Bangkok. Miller served two terms on the NaXonal Board of the NaXonal AssociaXon of Teachers of Singing (NATS) as the Intermountain Region Governor from 2011-2015, and has presented at a number of conferences here and abroad. He holds the doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he was a Regents Scholar and a member of the honorary socieXes Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Lambda, and the recipient of the Warren F. and Edith R. Day dissertaXon travel award for his collaboraXon with Mark Adamo.

Derrick Parker is an accomplished vocalist, hailed by Opera News for his “vividly flavored vocalism” and “tall and commanding” presence. Recent engagements include opening the 2023 Season with the Spokane Symphony singing songs from Aaron Copeland’s The Old American Songs, the Xtle role in Porgy and Bess with the Detroit Symphony, Jake in Porgy and Bess with Seagle Opera, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Utah Opera, Mozart’s Requiem with Utah Symphony, Porgy in Porgy and Bess with BalXmore Symphony, Ramfis in Aida with Utah Opera, Le fauteuil and L’arbre in L'enfant et les sorXleges with Utah Symphony, and Joe in Showboat with Kentucky Opera. Mr. Parker recently made a triumphant, last-minute debut with the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Porgy in Porgy and Bess. His European operaXc debut came with performances of Mel in Anthony McDonald’s The Knot Garden at the Scotsh Opera. Derrick Parker currently resides in Spokane with his wife Heather and two daughters Grace and Isabel. He is currently the Director of Music and Worship at First Presbyterian Church.

About the Whitworth Community Chorale

The Whitworth Community Chorale is a non-audiXoned, openenrollment choral ensemble specifically for community singers of all ages and experience levels as well as Whitworth students, faculty and staff. Dedicated to the performance of large-scale choral masterworks in addiXon to secular and sacred choral works, the Whitworth Community Chorale rehearses Monday evenings during the Whitworth University academic calendar from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The ensemble presents two large-scale concerts per academic year (one performance each semester).

Whitworth students may enroll in the ensemble for one academic credit (MU 279/479). Community members may parXcipate for a nominal fee of $100 each semester. Current Whitworth University faculty and staff may parXcipate with fees waived, and former faculty and staff may parXcipate at a discount.

MUSIC AT WHITWORTH

The Whitworth University Music Department, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, provides superb training in music as well as a thorough introduction to this essential element of the liberal arts. Whitworth music majors have gone on to prestigious graduate schools, fulfilling performance careers and successful teaching positions. Also, many non-music majors participate in the university’s renowned touring ensembles and enroll in private lessons through the music department. Whitworth University offers bachelor of arts degrees in music ministry, composition, instrumental performance, jazz performance, piano performance, piano pedagogy, string pedagogy, voice performance and music education. Music scholarships are available to both music majors and non-majors.
