Ask Buddy P3 1

Hey! Buddy the Bear here. I’m part of the Who Cares? Scotland family and I want to say welcome to SpeakOut Junior! The new Who Cares? Scotland magazine, especially for our younger members! Some of you told Who Cares? Scotland that you wanted us to do more stuff for children your age, and we’ve heard you loud and clear! We’ve taken the SO Junior pages from the big SpeakOut magazine and made them into your very own magazine! Here I’ll let you know about big changes, why they’re important and what they mean for you. You’ll get to learn more about the Who Cares? Scotland workers and how they can help you. I’ll also answer questions you might have and let you know about things you can take part in with Who Cares? Scotland. There will also be some fun crafts you can try at home, as well as quizzes and the chance to win a voucher every issue. SpeakOut Junior will come out 4 times a year and the postman will deliver it straight to your door. We hope you like it!

Buddy love,

Meet Your

Advocate

Donna MacLeod Bray is the advocate, or APW for short, on the Western Isles

Hello,

WESTERN ISLES

My name is Donna and I live on the Western Isles with my husband, 4 teenagers, and our dog. I enjoy sporty challenges like Tough Mudder- which is a big obstacle course where you have fun and get all muddy- and the Kiltwalk. I started with Who Cares? Scotland in December 2020. I am extremely lucky to have this job and to work with loads of amazing young people. My friends are all really jealous! Being an advocate is so important because we make sure you feel listened to. We say what you want, to the people who make decisions in your life. I love seeing young people feel good about being in charge of what they want in their own lives and being happy. On the Western Isles we are starting to see young people and their families again. People loved the activities we ran across the summer, so we are starting a group to help people from all the schools become friends and have some fun together. Now that we can see more people again, I am so looking forward to catching up with all of the North Team in person, and hopefully one day I will make it to the Head Office in Glasgow to meet all the new people I work with – or maybe they could come and visit the Western Isles?!

Summer

FUN

At Who Cares? Scotland, we run events for our members – giving you the chance to come along, meet other members and have fun. This summer we ran our Get Into Summer activity programme all over the country! There were trips to see the animals at Edinburgh Zoo and Blair Drummond Safari Park. Everyone who went got to see penguins diving into the water and lions relaxing in the grass. We held football tournaments, where teams and played each other for a prize. We had teams from Renfrewshire and North Ayrshire, we even had a member who had come all the way from Inverness. Two players were given a new pair of football boots for being so nice and friendly on the football pitch. Another group of members went to Go Ape. Go Ape is an obstacle course, high up in the trees. Can you imagine seeing the world like a bird? There was also laser tag, picnics in the park or trips to the beach. Members got to see their old friends and make new ones too. Everyone had a great time, and we already can’t wait till next summer! If you would like to know if there is anything going on in your local area, you can ask your APW or get a responsible adult to call our National Office – 0141 226 4441.

You said, we’re doing! Every year at Who Cares? Scotland, we ask our members to tell us what they think we do well and what we could do better. We call this the Membership Survey. This year, members have asked for help to come to our groups and more things for younger members. Here’s what we’ve been working on to give members what they’ve asked for!

Help to come to our groups We’re creating a brand-new buddying system! If you know anyone from Who Cares? Scotland, a staff member, volunteer or another young person, they can come with you to introduce you and make you feel welcome. If you’re new to Who Cares? Scotland, we’d be happy to let you meet a staff member or volunteer, so you can get to know them first, and then you can try a group together.

Including younger members We want our younger members to feel included, that is why we have created this SpeakOut Junior magazine just for you. We want you to love each issue, so make sure you tell us what you like and don’t like about it, we’ll be listening. We want our younger members to have a say in everything we do, so to make sure you get the chance, we are working on new ways for you to do just that, we know not everyone likes having to write to us and answer loads of questions. 8

What our Chief Executive (the big boss at Who Cares? Scotland) Louise says:

“Making sure our members feel part of Who Cares? Scotland is very important to me. I want to make sure that all our members feel seen and heard and that every Care Experienced person in Scotland has the opportunity to be part of WC?S. I can’t wait to start meeting you all.”
