Asking questions helps us understand the world around us. On this page, I’ll do my best to answer your questions! If you are still not sure, you can ask a grown up you trust or someone who works for Who Cares? Scotland to read over this page with you.
Q: What are the rules when it comes to brothers and sisters in care?
This is a great question, as recently there were some changes made to try and make things better for brothers and sisters in care in Scotland.

spent some Members, Thomas and Marissa, big boss here the ise, time catching up with Lou get to can you so at Who Cares? Scotland, has in she t wha out know her better and find store for members.
What’s been your favourite moment at Who Cares? Scotland so far? The best times have been connecting with our members. Recently, I climbed a big hill in Edinburgh called Arthur’s Seat with two of our 11-year-old members. They hadn’t even met before, but we all had so much fun!
Can you tell us a bit more about your family? I talk about my dog all the time because he’s the best! He’s called Archie, he’s a Westie. He’s the biggest Westie you’ll ever see. He loves other people, but he can also be pretty grumpy with other dogs! His favourite place is the beach. The other love of my life is my son. He’s adopted. He’s also a member of Who Cares? Scotland and is 6 and a half years old. He’s got so much energy and loves life. He’s also obsessed with football, especially Ronaldo. I’m really glad he’s got Who Cares? Scotland in his life.
6
What do members have to look forward to? There’s so much going on right now! There’s a big project called “The Promise” which is helping to make sure people in care are looked after and loved. Almost all of our work is making sure this happens. We’re also working on starting new groups and activities in more local areas, which is especially exciting! If you have any questions for Louise, you can ask a grown-up email them to membership@whocaresscotland.org and we’ll get her to answer them in the next issue of SpeakOut Junior.

Care Day and the Fe Care Day is a day of celebration
for Care Experienced children, young people and adults. It started in Scotland in 2015, and is now recognised around the world.
This year Care Day was on Friday 18th February and it’s theme was ‘community’. Care Day also saw l the start of Shetland’s third Festiva of Care - Tending the Light.
Care Day Highlights We hosted an online event, which saw Care Experienced people from across the UK and Ireland explore a digital village together and talk about different topics. Parts of these chats were then recorded to make a Care Day special podcast – which is something people can listen to on our website whenever they want. Aberdeen hosted their own ‘Northern Lights Care Festival’ to celebrate their young people. Our Highland team held an event in Inverness with a live DJ, photobooth and bingo. Some of our members met with the Minister for Children and Young People to talk about how important communities are and why Care Experienced people need to have their voices heard. To celebrate Care Day 2022 in East Ayrshire, Who Cares? Scotland teamed up with our neighbours at Centrestage for an afternoon of fun, which included a singsong, a scribble session and a buffet tea! 8
estival of Care 2022
FOC22 Highlights Tending the Light, Shetland’s Festival of Care 2022 lasted 5 days and saw flag raisings and light shows across Scotland. People built their own lighthouse models to celebrate. Shetland held an art exhibition, Minecraft workshops, theatre performances and the book launch of Take a Walk in My Shoes, an extraordinary book about what it is to be a person of any age who has experienced the care system. 9
Did you know? There are lots of Care Experienced people in the movies we watch and the books we read every day! You may have come across some of these characters without even knowing it. Each issue of SpeakOut Junior I’ll introduce you to some of these characters and the different types of care experience.
Did you know?
Spiderman is Care Experienced?
Yes, your favourite swinging superhero is Care Experienced just like you! There are lots of different stories about Spiderman. You might have come across him in comics or in cartoons or in films. But in each story Spiderman grows up in kinship care. Kinship care means you live with family members who aren’t your mum and dad. 10
Spiderman, whose real name is Peter Parker, grew up without his mum and dad there to look after him. He lived with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May who took care of him and loved him. What the story of Spiderman shows us is that Care Experienced people have what it takes to be superheroes. Your life might be different, but you might be going through your first superhero training lesson.
