Care Experienced Week P4-7
Black History M onth P10-11
Hey! Welcome back to SpeakOut Junior, Who Cares? Scotland’s magazine for our younger members. This issue we’ll look back at all the fun we had over Care Experienced Week in October. I’ll be explaining what campaigning is and how you can become a young Care Experienced campaigner and we’ll learn about Black History Month.
I hope you are all wrapping up warm as we come into winter. I have been trying on my Christmas jumpers and drinking hot chocolates! Love,
Buddy

What is Care Experienced Week?
It’s a whole week devoted to celebrating YOU, and your experiences. We love celebrating with the care community, remembering what connects us and recognising that sometimes growing up in care can be hard.

e n i h S o t e Tim The Time to Shine festival is an event just about having fun and making sure our members get their time to shine. This year our theme was ‘Film Characters’ and hundreds of you turned up wearing amazing costumes. We saw lots of Disney characters including prize winner, Princess Belle, Stitch, Mike and Sully! We enjoyed a lot of fun games like pass the parcel, dance-offs, a scavenger hunt and circuit skills with our talented performers.
Members could enjoy a glow-up at the Barbie Salon where they were doing nails and giving relaxing head massages. There was something for everyone to enjoy including a bouncy castle, a bucking bronco, a silent disco tent, a cinema, and a Lilo and Stitch-themed chill-out room.

Borders Champs do The Love Rally
15-year-old Robert from Galash iels has written abo ut his experience attending the Love Ra lly in Glasgow.
Dear Buddy,
s Today has been a busy but amazing day. This was Scottish Border been have I but this, like ing someth doing time first Champion’s Board . once before. We have travelled by train from Galashiels to Glasgow I am glad I was able to get Scottish Borders Champions to do fun something like this and it was my pleasure to organise something all were we , Glasgow to way and fabulous for the whole day. On our was Champs of head our Cory pretty excited, but it was a shame that d. weeken y not able to make it since it was his birthda
gDuring the parade, there was lots of chatter, shouting, and whistlin which made the most noise. Towards the end of the march, we gathered in the town centre of Glasgow and listened to amazing speakers who have been through the same experience as us. After the rally, we decided to sit down to have fish and chips. We had a lovely meal talking and laughing with one another. After the meal, we waited on the train to come home. By the time we reached Gala it was dark, rainy, and we were all tired. I am pleased to hear that they all enjoyed the love rally, apart from the rain which wasn’t so good, but we were still able to enjoy it and have a perfect time together. The Scottish Borders Champs are hoping to do the Love Rally again next year. Love Robert

Ask Buddy
Asking questions helps us understand the world around us. On this page, I’ll do my best to answer your questions! If you are still not sure, you can ask a grown up you trust or someone who works for Who Cares? Scotland to read over this page with you.
What is Campaigning? In the last Ask Buddy we learned about our rights and why they are important. Rights are there to make sure people are treated equally, fairly and kindly. Campaigning is some of the work Who Cares? Scotland, the Care Experienced community, and the people of Scotland have done to make sure that The Scottish Government makes changes to make your life better.
Famous Campaigners
Helen Keller
A deaf and blind activist who fought for the rights of people with disabilities. 8
Emmeline Pankhurst
Campaigned to allow women the right to vote in elections in the United Kingdom. Before that only men could vote.
Dr Martin Luther King
Known as the leader of the civil rights movement in American which fought for the rights of African Americans.
How do you campaign? There are lots of ways people can campaign to ask for change. These can include:
We will:
B.Heard
LISTEN TO US!
Asking people to sign their names to a document called a petition which explains the changes you want to make. The more people you get to sign the better!
Marches and protests are where a large group of people meet in public to get the attention of the world. At the Love Rally, we march to show we want love for all Care Experienced people.

Our Lifelong Rights Campaign At the moment the Scottish Government must look after Care Experienced people until they are 27 years old. Who Cares? Scotland wants to make sure Care Experienced people are supported for their entire life. One of the ways people can show their support for our Lifelong Rights Campaign is to sign their name on our website.
People also campaign by telling their friends about the things they want to change. This can be done by doing talks at school or making posters and flyers to spread the word.
You can be a campaigner by cutting out this little square and giving it to a grown-up. It tells them how they can sign their name and be part of our Lifelong Rights campaign.

Listen Black people have been telling their stories for a long time but they weren’t always listened to. It is important to learn about the history of slavery as well as listening to the views of black people today. Here are a few suggested books to get you started: My Hair by Hannah Lee, Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush by Patrice Lawrence and Little People, Big Dreams: Rosa Parks by Lisbeth Kaiser. 10
