Funny how such a simple word bedazzles and befuddles us all. Regardless of religious or political beliefs, our age or our gender, human or animal, love is something none of us can live without. In our February issue, love shows its multifaceted face in three unique ways. Our cover story features singer Perla Batalla and Chef Claud Mann, a successful husband and wife team. The couple gives us a glimpse into their happy family life, and Claud provides a delicious recipe to share with a loved one. Philosopher and writer Ernie Taminga looks into a grandfather’s heart and its connection to the universe, while poet and writer Tree Bernstein demonstrates the power of the poetic to move, inspire, and renew faith in our need for each other. We open our hearts, our minds and our souls to this experience, in spite of occasional heartache or disappointment, because we know, deep down in our core, that this is what it costs to be alive. Conversations ‘Round theTable with Claud Mann and Perla Batalla

here are times in life when you meet someone and, right from the start, it feels completely comfortable. One evening in December, my companion and I drove down the quiet streets of Ojai, looking for something to do. “Let’s stop in there for a minute,” he said, pointing to the lighted windows of a small cafe.* We walked into a space filled with art, warmth, and happy people. Colorful walls were filled with black and white and color portraits of beautiful food and the art of the kitchen. We’d stumbled upon Claud Mann’s, master chef of Dinner and a Movie fame, photography show. As a passionate foodie, I was pleased to learn some of the images have appeared in Edible Ojai, the magazine Claud and his wife, singer/songwriter, Perla Batalla, co-publish. As a fan of her music and her work with the legendary Leonard Cohen, I was thrilled to meet her in person. They were delightful and gracious and I wanted to know them better. Sitting around their dining room table — what Perla refers to as “the altar” of their cozy Ojai home — Claud made me a latté and put fresh, just-baked bread on the table. I experienced the precious and rare gift of being invited into the home of a couple whose sense of warmth, fun, and enthusiasm for life is palpable. They finish each other’s sentences, share a love for food, family, and music and were just the kind of folks I’d been hoping to find for our Valentine’s issue. These two have their priorities in order, a rare thing in any life and especially admirable in those whose talent and drive has made them successful in the world. I wondered; how do such high powered, multifaceted and creative individuals manage to sustain a happy family and marriage with so much going on? They had obviously learned how to combine love and work; what was the secret to their balance and grace? Claud and Perla met in 1984, in Los Angeles. Perla worked for Norman Lear and sang at night; Claud had come to LA to be an actor. “I was in college, studying a number of things, taking acting classes. Someone came through from ABC, and gave me a developmental contract. It was a bit of money to come down and be part of what they were doing that summer. It was a fine thing to do.” And yes, even then he was cooking: “Most people work in restaurants until they make it in show business, I worked in show business until I could make it in the restaurant business.” And Perla was famous. “She was singing in jazz clubs around town.” She knew about him as well through mutual friends, but both were doing other things and very busy with their lives. Perla is the first to admit she was lucky. She was introduced to producer Norman Lear through good friends Nancy and Carroll O’Connor, star of the hit TV show, All in the Family, when she was barely out of high school. She started as a receptionist and worked her way up: “In two years, and in my early twenties, I was an executive in charge of a whole department. We had eight hit shows at the time. It was absolutely insane, and I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I’d spend all my money on taking my friends to dinner, having lavish parties, just having fun.”

So how did they finally get together? P: I was engaged to someone else. And I’d made a decision about Claud based on how he looked, which you’re not supposed to do. He was really, really handsome so I assumed he wasn’t very smart. He looked like a model…. C: I was not a model! P: No, but you looked like one. I’d hear all these great things about him; how he was such a good person, and such a devoted friend, and how he was always there for her. SH: Not to mention a good cook. P: A great cook, yes. Then, there came cut-backs at Norman Lear: “My executive career was over at 22. I’d gone back to school to study law and was thinking of giving up singing. A friend of mine, a professor at Harvard said, ‘That’s ridiculous. You’re young and you can sing. Law school will always be there. Go when you’re 60 if you still want to, but right now you’ve got to sing.’” Perla’s fiancé, a lawyer and a singer, thought she should stay in law school: “So we broke up. One night my girlfriend and I had dinner with Claud. We knew a lot about each other already through her and it was really comfortable. I told her, ‘He’s so smart, he’s so funny!’ All those things I didn’t think he was before because he was so attractive.” SH: And, what did you think about her? C: Well, she was cool and I’d never been cool. Before it was cool to be a dork, I was just a dork. There was a little club where artists would get together and Perla was part of that group. I met her through that group but always felt like I was an outsider looking in. P: As much as he thinks he wasn’t, he was very cool. In fact, everyone usually just keeled over when they saw you. SH: Claud, you obviously got off the acting track at some point. C: I never thought of myself as any kind of a TV star, I never felt comfortable with that. Dinner and a Movie was fun. It sort of rolled it all together; I like comedy, I liked acting and I love cooking, obviously. The woman who introduced us was also responsible for the show. After 16 years, we finished the last season this September. SH: Did Perla ever want to be an actor? C: She had a scholarship to Lee Strasberg. P: I gave a really good audition, but I pretty much improvised the whole thing. C: A big part of what she does in her show is telling stories and sharing experiences. (continued on page 6)

(Mann & Batalla continued from page 5) P: I think I learned how to tell a story from Leonard Cohen. We did all those hundreds of shows, and he never dialed it in, night after night. I was studying him. Perla began singing with Cohen’s band in 1988 for the I’m Your Man tour. In 1993, she toured, recorded, and arranged the vocals for his The Future tour. P: Touring is hard on relationships. I know a lot of musicians whose lives and relationships have been destroyed by being on the road. And, it was a new one. I have friends who are separated a lot, even with kids. The mate at home has to raise them...I don’t know if I could do that. The couple has always made family their priority. In the midst of great personal successes — an offer for a record deal with Warner Brothers and Claud opening a new restaurant — they learned she was pregnant. “The record company wanted her to go on tour. She didn’t want to do that. As soon as the restaurant opened, I quit and it was a high-paying executive chef job. But, I didn’t want to be working 60 hours a week with a new baby. The baby doesn’t know if you’re poor!” Both were home for most of their daughter’s early childhood. When Claud first started Dinner and a Movie, she was a baby on the set. “It was two blocks from our house.” SH: I’ve talked to a lot of busy people, but rarely have I heard anyone say: the kid isn’t going to know if we’re poor. P: Eva’s first Christmas, she got a deck of cards… she loved it. C: Fifty-two presents and a joker! SH: You seem to have a deep connection to something and to each other. Can you talk about that? P: It’s hard to explain. I think there’s a feeling we share about the beauty of art and nature and humanity at its best. C: And the richness of every moment. That’s the commonality between food and music. P: We’re sitting at our altar, right here! The dining room table is our altar. C: There’s something about that moment or that note that will never happen again. The thing happening at that moment...if you have a minute with your daughter in

the morning— P: You take it. C: I get up and have coffee with her and that minute is the most precious thing in the world. Cooking is that way too. You have something that you’ve been mindful in making; at that moment, that food is like a poem. If one can stop at any point and say, “This is great. At this moment there’s sun on my skin.” I don’t think of spirituality as being something involved with religion; I think it’s something that isn’t taught but it’s something we recognized in each other.

SH: I remember watching Leonard at a concert. He’d dropped to his knees to sing and took off his hat. That’s what I sense in both of you; something completely natural but special. C: Anything can be sacred; it’s just the recognition of it. P: It’s like that saying, that you will never get that time back. It’s so true. Eva is this far from going on with her life — C: And, she can’t wait. P: And what we think about that is, we’ve done our job right. If she wants to go tackle the universe, that means we’ve done our job. C: She’s got this mind that neither of us had and she’s got a great heart to go with it. What I really like is that her very favorite thing to do is sit in a café with a book or a pad; that is heaven for her. We have pictures of her in cafés all over the world — in Paris or Buenos Aires or Madrid. And I love that she will call and say she has an hour and she’ll want to have coffee and hang out with her mom or her

dad. SH: It’s refreshing to sit down with two people who have the kind of lives you have and hear how proud you are of your daughter. P and C: She’s the most important thing we’ve ever done. Nothing else even comes close! What about their magazine, Ojai Edible? I learned the overall template for the “edibles” had won the James Beard Award for best food publication. C: That’s huge and we’re very proud of that. We’re having our 10th anniversary this next issue. It’s going to take a lot more time to set up and lay out and we’ll have an extra ten thousand issues printed. I’d been writing for them six or seven years, and when the owners moved, I expressed interest that I’d like to pick it up. SH: What’s that been like, with everything else you’re doing? P: Well, it does add craziness. We both like the challenge. With the magazine we’ve had some fun; I’ve even written an article, and do some of the art. C: I see this magazine as goodwill; it’s a public service for our community and our county. Locality makes such good sense when you think about it. The calories it takes to ship a pear from Chile, for example, is about a thousand times the calories you’ll earn eating it. The other thing Claud does is work with Food For Thought, Ojai’s healthy foods program: “When our daughter started school, and I found out what they were serving, I met with the former food service director and asked if there was anything we could do and I got on the board.” Through the program’s efforts, now there’s a garden at every school, and a garden coordinator who also works with the kids and teaches them about gardening. “We do this thing where we dump all the garbage out and the kids do a wastestream audit; what should go into the compost, what should be recycled, etc. Now we’ve gotten the school districts to agree to do scratch cooking, and we are going to train the lunch ladies.” Meanwhile, Perla is getting ready for a LACMA project among other things: (continued on page 40)

Valentine’s Shortcake Serves 8-12 You can work for hours on more elaborate desserts without achieving the simple satisfaction of this effortless classic. Substituting cream for butter serves the dual purpose of producing a more tender pastry while eliminating the sometimesdaunting step of cutting together the fat and flour. Strawberries 3 pints of the ripest, sweetest strawberries you can find, hulled and halved if small, quartered if large 1 to 2 tablespoons maple syrup, agave nectar or granulated sugar (optional) Juice of 1 lemon Shortcake 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup sugar 1 1/4 cups heavy cream 2 tablespoons melted butter 2 tablespoons coarse sugar

Topping 1 1/2 cups heavy cream a splash of pure maple syrup or agave nectar, to taste 1/4 cup thinly sliced crystallized ginger Mash about a quarter of the berries; toss with the unmashed berries, sweetener (if desired) and lemon juice. Set aside to macerate while you make the shortcake and whip the cream. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and sugar; whisk to combine. Using a wooden spoon, stir in the cream and mix until the dough just comes together in a sticky mass. Dump the mixture onto a clean, lightly floured work surface and using floured hands, knead only a few times until the mixture forms a soft dough. For light shortcakes don’t over-knead. Divide dough in half and shape each half into a 5” round; cut both rounds into wedges. Brush each wedge with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Place on a parchment covered baking sheet, leaving a few inches between each wedge and bake 10-15 minutes, or until just barely golden. While the shortcakes cool, combine cream and sweetener in a large mixing bowl; whisk vigorously until soft peaks form. Have a friend help out if your arm gets tired. Split shortcakes crosswise; place bottom halves on plates; spoon berries and a large dollop of whipped cream over each. Add shortcake tops and repeat with more berries and whipped cream. Garnish with crystallized ginger and eat rapidly.

After Beguiling & Befoozling Us â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Meaning in Metaphor & the Language of Love by Tree Bernstein

ing, then answered her own question, “Let Me Count the Ways,” in the title of her poem to her lover, the poet Robert Browning. That’s the way poets talk when they talk of love. To simply say to the Best Beloved, “I love you,” reveals a lack of imagination. On Valentine’s Day, when amorous thoughts seek significance in words, a metaphor can come in real handy. Lovers turn their sunflower faces to follow the sun, reaching for meaning in the vast blue heavens. Or at least for something eloquent to write on a valentine. Lovers must define the subtle varieties of love, enumerate its many splendors, and employ a metaphor or two in order to seal the deal on the wheel of love’s fortune. Love has many names. Some call it chocolate. “If the world was crazy, you know what I’d wear? / A chocolate suit and a tie of éclair ,” wrote Shel Silverstein in his poem, “If the World Was Crazy.” Chocolate, bitter in its natural state comes close to being an aphrodisiac when sweetened with sugar (alchemy is a metaphor for the creative process). As proof of the power of both chocolate and metaphor, I offer as an example Beatrice Wood, an Ojai artist who lived to be 105. She attributed her long life to the love of both young men and chocolate. When ...That the chocolate cat is at once all agog, As her swelling proportions attest. and the wind whisks it whither you know not, whither you care not Yes, that is another color of rose. Love, that “little word” as Sandburg calls it. There is so much to love! We love our family and friends and that particular shade of blue where the Pacific meets the horizon at sunset. We love iPads and kneepads and crash pads when we’re on the road again. (But shoulder pads are out. We don’t love the ‘80s any more.) We love God and our country and red sports cars with German engines. We don’t love mean people, mean people suck. We love our troops, but don’t love war, because war is hell. We love Mom and apple pie and rock ‘n roll until the day we die. I NY, but I left my heart in San Francisco. The heart is a lonely hunter in the heart of darkness where the ministry of the heart tells the truth, cross-my-heart and hope to spit. In the heart of America you can hear voices of the heart drumming heart-felt thanks for all the fish.

Love is so versatile; I can love dark chocolate and my kitten with equal ardor. That one is edible and the other pet-able just demonstrates the elasticity of love. I also love “A Red, Red Rose” as Scottish poet Robert Burns does, although he had a simile feeling about roses, not firmly metaphorical. Burns wrote: “O my luve’s like a red, red rose,” which sounds a bit waffley. Not a secure metaphor at all. May Swenson, however, is quite sure about roses. In her poem “Blue,” she writes: “Blue, but you are Rose, too, /and buttermilk, but with blood / dots showing through.” Although, Gertrude Stein would say, “A Rose is a Rose is a Rose.” In Carl Sandburg’s “Little Bird,” the poet views the rose in another metaphorical light: And are they after beguiling and befoozling us when they tell us love is a rose, a red red rose, the mystery of leaves folded over and under and you can take it to pieces and throw it away or you can wear it for a soft spot of crimson in your hair, at your breast, and you can waltz and tango wearing your sweet crimson rose and take it home and lay it on a window sill and see it until one day you’re not careful and it crackles into dust in your hand

In her poem, “Waking a Lover,” Ojai poet Mary Natwick writes, “when you wake / someone you love / a little early / because you want to show them something / special / and you touch them on the shoulder and sing, hey you, hey you / that’s what this bird sounds / like / now / at dawn / coaxing the world to wake.” Love is a simple word that cannot be translated or satisfactorily explained. This elastic, little word that lists our preferences as loves is larger that anything imaginable. A rush of feeling seeks its center. Love is the metaphor for all of this.

What do we leave, living like a nest of surly birds, alive, among the thickets or static, perched on the frigid cliffs? So then, if living was nothing more than anticipating the earth, this soil and its harshness, deliver me, my love, from not doing my duty, and help me return to my place beneath the hungry earth —Pablo Neruda, from “Love for this Book.”

In the Eyes of a Child: Love Spreads at Ground Level by Ernie Tamminga

y wife Alison and I are driving with our daughter and son-in-law across the bridge toward San Francisco. Ali and I are in the back seat, with our three-month-old granddaughter, Zoe. She’s in a proper car seat, facing backward, and therefore face-to-face with us. I notice that she’s looking at me, so I look back. We lock eyes, and hold each other’s gaze steadily for several minutes. Occasionally, Zoe lights up in a smile that starts with her mouth, expands to her whole face, and continues expanding to involve her entire body – arms rising, back arching, legs extending. Then she relaxes again, all without ever breaking our mutual gaze. I’m entranced. I would be, of course, as a Grandpa. But there’s something here that’s beyond the grandfather-granddaughter relationship. I am struck by the grace, wonder, and mystery of contact and communion. I am beholding and being beheld by another person, and because she is a baby, the beholding is innocent, unguarded, and complete. At least there is complete innocence on her side; I, a grown-up, have long since lost my primal inno-

cence and I carry many layers of life baggage. But because her innocence is so complete, my baggage, my agendas, are irrelevant in this moment, and in this moment they are suspended and I am free. This is the innocence of pure attention, and it makes it possible to be, genuinely, in each other’s presence. At this level, the Golden Rule is not even necessary, for there is not even the remotest thought of doing harm, of exploiting or taking advantage. What if I turn from the baby, now, and what if “I” turn to face “you?” Immediately, the innocence of pure attention is obscured in a cloud of self-protection. Even if you are someone I love, and you love me, our mutual attention is distracted by unspoken questions: What is your opinion of me? What are you expecting of me? What do you demand of me? And am I willing to do, to be, what you are seeking

And so on. This puts me someplace I probably don’t even really want to be — I’m behind the boundaries I have learned to put up, looking “out” at you, but not truly in your presence. Somewhere, behind those boundaries and deep below all those layers, the possibility of pure attention still lies ready. And sometimes it actually breaks through, sometimes by surprise, in a given moment. But it’s delicate, easily disrupted, and all too fleeting. Holding it for more than a brief moment takes a kind of intentional focus that we are, by and large, not trained or equipped to sustain. And so agendas and expectations and anxieties flow in to fill the space between us. This is true even between persons who love, or at least know, one another. What if I turn from a beloved “you,” now, and what if I turn to face the world at large?

that I used to do in my country; you, whose religious beliefs see the world differently from the way “my” religion sees it. And we can’t simply “tolerate” each other’s beliefs because our beliefs shape our behavior and your behavior now directly affects me. So many people I don’t really know at all, except through mediated stereotypes, now directly affect my life. There’s a constant storm of psychic input, most of it coming from far outside my personal reach. So resorting to simple solutions, and taking comfort in stereotypes, is as seductive and understandable as it is counterproductive. How else can we “keep up with things?” We come at each other armed with categories for sorting each other out, rather than with tools for coming to know one another. In a planet that’s face-to-face (but not eye-to-eye) with itself, new questions arise: How can I even apply the “Golden Rule?” If I know you only through stereotypes, can I even assume that the ways I want to be treated, are the same as the ways you want? What if the way you want to be treated doesn’t fit with the way I believe we ought to treat one another? It takes a lot of courage to say, “I don’t understand you, I don’t even know you, but let’s at least agree that we won’t kill each other, while we try to work our way through this strange time.” One of the few clear guideposts is that for any possible future, hope is a prerequisite – a pragmatic hope that as bad as things look, it doesn’t have to be that way. There’s nothing in the nature of the universe, or in Creation, that says we’re inevitably destined to destroy ourselves. A hope, and conviction, that we’re endowed with enough genius and compassion to find our way home. The sky is full of grand schemes, and the earth is shaken with huge, competing agendas. But here, right here at ground level, in the eyes of a child, there is a hint of the Possible. Here, at ground level, in the eyes of a child, there is constant reminder of who we are, and how we can love.

Somewhere, behind those boundaries and deep below all those layers, the possibility of pure attention still lies ready.

I notice immediately that there is a buzzing swarm of different “you’s” in my consciousness, and they all come with agendas, and they all come with demands and expectations. I am bombarded, around the clock, by messages, especially from the omnipresent media, telling me what is happening in my community, in other communities in my country, in other countries, among other peoples halfway around the world. Messages that focus mainly on disasters, on emergencies, on suffering, and especially on threats. Because those are the things that make “news” that sells. The issue goes deeper: for the first time in the history of the planet, we are all in the effective presence of one another. Not the true, mutual presence of communion, not that eyes-to-eyes presence, but presence in the sense of, “I know you’re there, and I can’t get away from you.” We encounter one another every day, without ever meeting.

Throughout history, we knew, vaguely, that there were “other” kinds of people somewhere “over there.” But as long as my day-to-day experience included only my own local community, the strange people “over there” were an abstraction. I might or might not have an opinion about them and their strange ways, but they were all over there, and didn’t affect me in my everyday going about my own business. But today, technology has made the planet one, single place. Geographical distances don’t exist in a world drenched in media and telecommunication. Today, a new kind of “you” intrudes into my everyday life. Today I’m affected in my everyday decisions and my everyday going about my own business, by “you” – you, the terrorist; you, the working person in India or Asia doing the job

It’s called, In Wonderland: the Adventures of Women Surrealist Artists of Mexico and the United States. P: We’re going through the journals of Frieda Kahlo and Diego Rivera and started writing songs in order to premiere something. So, that’s exciting for me because it’s creative. Often my agent just books tours and stuff doing what I do. I’m known for doing the Leonard Cohen songs, and the Mexican/Latin American songs — I just want to sing a good song. C: You’re a marketing nightmare. She can do the Leonard Cohen songbook — he was in the studio when she was recording — then there’s the Latin American stuff. She’s as good as anyone in the genre. Then there’s the jazz — and her original stuff is sort of surrealist folk. P: I love that, Claud! David is a genius and we’ve worked on a lot of stuff together. When we can work together, and it’s one of those inspired moments, I have to stop everything else. SH: Is there anything else you’d like to share? C: We were talking about when we moved to Ojai. When Perla had discovered she was pregnant, she made a decision to get out of her contract with the record label.*** Because of the kind of decisions she’d have to make, and the people she’d have to work with: “you have to do what they say.” At the time, she also had an offer to sing with Pink Floyd: “Again I had to say no. People who say that all they want to do is be famous — and they go for it, and get it, where are they? What else have they developed? For me, what I always wanted was a family. All my decisions were based on that.” C: First of all, living in Ojai was considered a death sentence for people in the film or movie business. Sixteen years ago, we might have been moving to Alaska. But, we were looking for something where the air was a little better; we had a new baby. At that point our credit was so bad, we couldn’t even rent an apartment. We drove here and this person essentially gave us the key and said, “Give me two hundred dollars and we’ll figure it out.” P: This is like faith; we had nothing, no

credit. He said, “I like you kids. You look like you’re handy. Things fall apart, you fix them, I’ll give you good rent, no first and last, take the keys.” We were stunned. C: We were at the point where you’d count the pennies; one would get the coffee, the other would go back and get the refill. But, we had as much fun when

we were poor as we ever had when we had money. The Chinese character for adversity also means opportunity. To bring it back to food...this is a really great time to bring everybody back to the table. We were taken out to dinner last night at an expensive restaurant. The price of one entree could have filled this table with food. I could have fed ten people. And, I would have had my family. People would have been cooking and eating together.... P: You can’t put a price on the love that would have been served along with that meal. I don’t think this depression has peaked. People are really suffering, especially artists. It’s gone from having regular income and being able to pay your bills, to our salaries being slashed. But, Claud is right; we’re not in it alone. People get stressed out and angry, and there’s a lot

to be angry about. But attitude is everything. You can still be kind and you can still love your children, and not panic. C: And that’s what people need to do now that times are tight. We used to do this thing in San Francisco, when we were so poor. Perla was singing at the Mark Hopkins in the evening, I was going to school — P: In fancy gowns that my mom had sewn for me.
