Even in Southern California, we observe the change of seasons. One of my favorite harbingers is a plum tree. This particular one is a showstopper; in one day its bare winter branches seem to burst into thousands of purply-red blossoms. I’ve observed traffic slow while folks pull out smart phones to snap a photo.

John Robbins:

A New Good Life An interview by Sharon Hall

n the early 90’s, a book crossed my path that changed the way I felt about food. That book was Diet for a New America, written by Baskin-Robbins heir, John Robbins. It was a hard read; the revelations about the food industry and how animals are treated was almost more than I could bear. Like most Americans, I was blissfully ignorant about the chain of causality leading up to that seemingly healthy animal-based protein on my plate. But at the same time Robbins scared and alarmed me, he offered solutions that could save our health, our planet, and maybe even our souls. In spite of personal financial loss, he still walks his talk. He has a new book coming out about not-so-happy cows, and has written a book for these uncertain times, The New Good Life: Living Better Than Ever in an Age of Less. Robbins is a featured speaker at the Health Freedom Expo in Los Angeles in March. I spoke with the author/activist by phone about his books, his life, and the passion for individual and planetary health that continues as his personal mission. SH: First of all, I want to thank you for writing Diet for a New America. When I read it years ago, one of the things I so appreciated was the way you clarified the link between personal health and the environment. JR: The publisher is coming out with a 25th anniversary edition. Believe it or not, the book is still selling very well. Many people want to lower their carbon footprint and have a more earth-friendly life. There’s a tremendous surge in awareness now about the painful costs we’re paying for industrialized food. People now realize that eating locally-grown food, eating lower on the food chain, and eating organic foods that are not genetically engineered, is not only healthier for us, but also healthier for the planet.

As the only son and heir to the Baskin-Robbins fortune, John Robbins grew up in what most kids would consider the enviable position of getting to eat as much ice cream as he wanted, whenever he wanted it: “We had a swimming pool in the shape of an ice cream cone.” His father groomed John to take over the ice cream business that had made them a very wealthy family, but John had other plans: “ He’d hoped that I would run this multi-billion dollar company. But, I didn’t want to invent the 32nd flavor. I made a choice for integrity.” At the age of 21, John made a decision to walk away from the great fortune his father’s business represented in order to live his truth: “I told my dad I didn’t want a trust fund. I didn’t want to depend at all on his financial achievements.” JR: I’m not saying that eating ice cream is going to kill anybody but the more you eat, the more likely you are to become obese, and to develop heart disease, or to develop diabetes, like my father did. SH: That’s where justification comes in. We’re so good at justifying in order to keep doing things the way we want to do them. JR: I didn’t want to do that. By the way, I’m not pointing the finger at Baskin-Robbins, in particular. Jerry Cohen, the founder of Ben and Jerry’s — a great guy by the way — had a quintuple bypass in his 40’s. He was also a very big guy who ate a lot of ice cream. The psychologist John Bradshaw talks about the elephant in the room that no one mentions.

Another issue that concerns Robbins is the national problem with obesity, which he writes about on his website. John’s uncle Burt Baskins, co-founder of the 31 flavors franchise, died of a heart attack at the age of 54: “He was a very big man and he ate a lot of ice cream. When he died at such an early age, I asked my dad if he thought there was a connection between the amounts of ice cream my uncle ate and his heart attack. And my dad said no. His ticker just got tired and stopped working. That was a very interesting moment for me.”

SH: I’m familiar with his work. He uses that as a recovery model. JR: Yes. It denotes a taboo subject. Well, in my family of origin, the possibility that there might be a connection between ice cream and disease — and heart disease in particular — was the elephant. You just couldn’t talk about it. I understand why my father couldn’t talk about that. By the time my uncle died, he’d sold more ice cream to more people than anybody else on the planet. People asked me; how could I walk away from that kind of financial security? But, the answer is, I felt more emotional security by doing so; I started to feel more alive and genuine. I have never regretted my choice to walk away.

SH: It would be a bit hard to face that truth. JR: Very hard. But although I could understand why my father couldn’t consider the possibility, I felt I needed to consider it and I wanted to.

SH: In a talk you gave at the Health Freedom Expo last year you have mentioned something you called “an acupuncture point.” What does that mean? (continued on page 38)

early every culture has a ritual to initiate the process of change. In Thailand, during the magical festival of Loy Krathong, devotees venerate the Buddha with charming offerings that float down the river on a banana leaf raft. These little flotillas display incense, candles, flowers, and a few coins. The raft symbolizes letting go of past grudges and disappointments so that one can begin anew. Some Thais also cut their fingernails and hair and add them to the raft, actually letting go of unwanted parts of the self. It is an ancient Ritual Release ceremony, something here in California we would call a Detox. This word that once shuttered windows and elicited whispers from the neighbors next door is now in wide release. Detox. We all need it. Detox isn’t just for alcoholics giving up drink, or smokers kicking the nicotine habit. Everyone has some kind of monkey they need to cage — even your neighbor, maybe even you. Here in the Western Hemisphere at the first whiff of spring comes the perennial urge to clean up, sort out, discard, and renew. One could call it a need for spring-cleaning, a Ritual Release ceremony or Detox, but however you define it, it is essential to our sense of wellness. Where to begin? Here are six suggestions that may help clear the way:

1. UNPLUG

4. GIVE IT AWAY Maybe it’s because of my dual nature as writer and editor that I feel a quarterly urge to purge my files. And, because I live in Ojai, there are many local and virtual options to transport unwanted items on their merry way. Clutter stifles the imagination and collects dust. Getting rid of old clothes, chipped china or deflated pillows clears the way for more visual ease. (And room for more new stuff!) Post on Craigslist or create your own Facebook neighborhood give-away site, like Ojai Unconditional Give or Take. OUGOT states: “We, as a group, have all that we need. The intention of Ojai Unconditional Give or Take is to move these things around to the places they are needed most. Feel free to post the items you have and are willing to give away, or the items you wish to find.” Or call the Salvation Army to come to your door.

You will feel calmer, lighter, more relaxed, more organized, and energized.

“How can I miss you when you won’t go away?” sings Dan Hicks. Are your thumbs callused from over-texting? Is your neck in a permanent crook from holding your cell phone to your ear? Try this: unplug. Take a break from logging-on, updating, or compulsively checking your status and have a time-out one day a week. Turn off, tune in, reboot. Put the cell phone down. Learn what it feels like to walk down the street without anything in your hands. Listen to the birds. Look up at the sky. Need a support group to be alone? 2. GIVE IN Crazy schedule? Hectic week? Feel like you can’t do another thing? Then don’t. Give in, let go, take a nap. Dr. Sara C. Mednick, author of Take a Nap! Change Your Life and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, notes, “My research in the science of napping shows that without a midday rest, we are not able to perform at optimal levels throughout the day. In fact, our performance falls apart. Napping maintains and even boosts our skills. Get to know your own sleep! 3. GIVE UP Contemplating a complete body/mind/spirit makeover is exhausting. Who has the time? Even if you can’t slip away to the Golden Door in Encinitas for a two-week deluxe spa “transformative regime,” you could manage a weekend of planned hikes in Las Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara. Give up on the idea of all

DO SOMETHING YOU’VE NEVER DONE BEFORE Take yourself on an art date — you might attend a concert of unfamiliar music, go to a play you’ve never seen before, see a subtitled foreign film, visit a museum you’ve never been to or a lecture on a topic you know nothing about. Getting out for the pure enjoyment of your own company validates your own good opinion of yourself. Allow yourself to be surprised. At a crossroads in Culver City? 6. PLANT SOME SEEDS Were you expecting a metaphor right about now? Sure, in an article about Ritual Release, spring-cleaning and Detox, one would expect to see Seeds of Change. “My mind is a garden./My thoughts are the seeds./My harvest will be either flowers or weeds,” wrote Mel Weldon. Her poem is a metaphor for good intentions. However, I mean actually plant some seeds. Not potted starts from the nursery (although those are good too); plant a seed from the ground up and enjoy the miracle. I was six when I planted my first sunflower. It grew twice my size and produced fistfuls of seeds. I’ve been gathering and planting seeds ever since. When you plant something you are participating in a Ritual of Renewal. Sheila Cluff:

The Grand Dame of Fitness by Linda Harmon

itting down with Sheila Cluff is a “WOW” experience. The 75-year-old is on top of her game and her “game” includes health, wellness, and so much more. Cluff, born in a small eastern Canadian town, was raised by parents that taught her she “could do anything”; they supported her dreams, which at the time included professional ice-skating. “We had a saying in Ottawa; ‘you either ski, skate, or hibernate,’” says Cluff, discussing her life over a healthy three-course lunch served in the dining room of her landmark spa and inn located in Ojai, California; The Oaks at Ojai.

Cluff claims her love of keeping fit grew naturally in Canada, where they have “eight months of wintertime and almost every little

girl learns to figure skate.” Cluff, encouraged by her parents, turned pro at 18 and toured with the Hollywood Ice Revue as a line skater. She went to Canada, the U.S., and Mexico and was later cast as a showgirl and skating member of the New York “Roxiettes.” “We hung out with the Rockettes and used to kid them that we could do anything they could do and do it on ice,” says Cluff. Her approach to life is that it should be a challenge and lived at full tilt. After skating, her parents decided it was time to send her off to university at Ottawa Teachers College. Cluff would continue to

give ice-skating lessons throughout college, after graduation, and when she began teaching physical education classes at D. Roy Kennedy School in Ottawa. “I taught sixth grade through junior high, and being goal oriented as an athlete, I decided to be the best physical education teacher ever,” says Cluff. She noticed her female students managed to call in sick with “female problems” to get out of gym six times a month. “I didn’t blame them, it was boring,” Cluff continues. She decided to incorporate some of her skating moves and the joy of movement into the classroom. ”It wasn’t easy in those days to get music in the classroom, so we bought a piano and brought it up onto the stage of the multi-purpose room where I taught, and the girls started having fun.” According to Cluff, she was also teaching figure skating at two other locations when things really heated up. One day during her second year of teaching, a student’s mother showed up with a stern look on her face and pointed her finger at her. “She said ‘what you have been doing with my daughter?’” says Cluff. Cluff was a little worried until the mother broke into a big grin, saying, “‘her complexion is clearer, her hair is shinier, her grades are better. I want what she’s getting.’” Cluff explains that right then and there she saw a need she could fill, giving people a way to enjoy exercise, be healthier and feel good about themselves. She told herself, “exercise is not a fad,” and began a fitness business. That germ of an idea in the 1950’s, what Cluff calls “cardio-vascular dance,” would become the “movement” craze exemplified by the eruption of jazzercise classes all over America in the 80’s. Still later, this would grow into a multi-billion dollar fitness industry. Cluff has been at the forefront of much of it. She did not forgo a family life in her quest either. She married Don Cluff, a fellow Canadian and engineer she met first in grade school and then again years later while waiting for a friend at the ice-rink. Cluff says her husband of over 50 years has helped her with her career, encouraging her to give up school teaching and skating to devote the time to develop her fitness business. Develop it she did. She contracted to state and local government programs, after school programs, care facilities, and cruise lines for fitness classes. She expanded into many different aspects of fitness, including “mommy and me” classes, and even broke into local television. The couple and their children then moved to southern California for Don’s job relocation. Once here, Cluff re-grew her business while growing her family. She designed and contracted for movement in early child development classes in local school systems, and feels it was her first-hand knowledge of being a “working mother” that helped her to be aware of another growing need; stress reduction. It was with that thought that Cluff then broke into California television with fitness and dietary tips on KNBC and KABC. Cluff ’s basic philosophy was, and still is, “when people eat well and exercise they feel better, and when they feel better they look better.” Sounds like common sense today but in those days it was a revolutionary concept. It was before the days of widespread women’s sports, and diets that included local, organic, low-salt,

low-sugar and low-meat dietary recommendations. Then, in 1977, Cluff took a big risk; she decided to take the next step and open her own location focusing on women’s health. “I’d been teaching in rented spaces,” says Cluff, “and decided to look for a piece of property to build our own. We got an offer to lease a property in Ojai that had been an old hotel. It was in terrible disrepair…later we had to mortgage the house and everything we owned to purchase it.” Cluff explains that in visits to Europe early on she saw that Europeans were far ahead in caring for their own fitness and wellness. She believed someone needed to bring the spa concept to the United States, and that someone was named Cluff. Her dream paid off, when she and her husband launched two of the first-oftheir-kind spas in this country: The Oaks in Ojai and later The Palms in Palm Springs. The Cluff concept was simple; offer interesting, stimulating exercise classes and healthful meals. Guests would come to stay anywhere from one or two nights to several weeks. They came and then returned, often with many of their friends. Word spread and the Spa was born. Although The Palms was sold in 2004, some of those first guests continue to come to The Oaks. Today, clients dine on a delicious, healthful, locally sourced menu, and are given an array of fitness classes, hikes, and treatments to choose from. All the services encourage healthy lifestyle changes in comfortable, friendly surroundings. Two years ago, Cluff resigned as managing CEO, though she continues to teach up to 25 classes a week. Her daughter, Cathy, filled the position and continues her mother’s tradition of meeting her guests’ needs with warmth in a family-like atmosphere. The Cluffs recently completed a historic renovation of The Oaks with noted architect David Bury. The renovation added much-needed room and technology, while keeping an eye to the history and beauty of the past. Cluff, who is the author of four books and numerous fitness videos, not only continues to teach when not out of town, but also speaks for her favorite causes, including Project Red for cardiovascular health. She is a founding member of the Committee of 200, a women’s business organization, and the International Spa Association (ISPA), the world’s largest membership organization of health and fitness professionals. She was awarded the first “Entrepreneur of the Year” from IDEA, a professional association of health and fitness experts, is a recipient of the ISPA Visionary Award for her astuteness and dedication to the industry, and the Eve Award from the Mannequins Auxiliary of Assistance League of Southern California for her philanthropy and commitment to community outreach. According to Cluff, she and her husband’s philosophy have always been the same: “you can’t just put your toe in the water … you have to jump right in.” Cluff jumped right in, aren’t we all glad she did.

When people eat well and exercise they feel better, and when they feel better they look better.

(Robbins continued from page 4) JR: I’m referring to a specific point at which, with a minimal amount of effort and energy expenditure, we can get a maximum amount of healing to benefit the whole system — our bodies, our minds, our spirits, our communities, our environments, our families…even our futures as human beings. SH: Specifically, what do you see that point as? JR: I see that point as our food choices. By eating lower on the food chain, by eating less meat and animal products, eating higher quality plant products, we can get enhanced nutrition. We can create a stronger immune system and less susceptibility to infectious disease; create stronger respiratory systems so we can breathe more fully and deeply. That does something beautiful to our minds and bodies and spirits as well as enhances our sense of aliveness; it gives us stronger circulatory systems and cardiac health so we have less susceptibility to heart disease, not to mention enhancing our mental and emotional health. At the same time, it decreases the pollution of the air and water by decreasing the amount of greenhouse gases produced by bringing food to our table — it stabilizes our environment. It’s a point of power. SH: You also made a statement at the Health Freedom Expo last year about the karma of our food choices in the case of the animals. You said, “When there’s misery on our menus, something happens to us.” That really struck me. We do bear the burden of our choices. And, not just on the physical level. JR: Yes. I’m really intrigued by this question because, in America, we have this schizoid relationship with animals. Many of us love our cats and our dogs, our pets. We love wildlife; we love to see birds flying in the sky, we love their song and their voices. We instinctively know when wildlife is present in an environment, there’s something sustaining and good about it. So, on the one hand, we love animals. But on the other hand, we treat certain animals quite differently. We make a mental and verbal distinction. We call some animals “pets” and we lavish our love on them. We give them names; often they sleep on our beds, we feed them, we pay for their vet bills. They are part of our family, part of our heart — we love them, they love us back. And, we get so much

out of those relationships. Then, other animals, we call “dinner” or “livestock.” And, we consider it acceptable to treat those animals with any level of contempt or any level of cruelty. SH: I agree. It’s insane. Some of us will rescue a bug and carry it out of the house, or only use safe-traps for rodents, then turn around and think nothing of roasting a factory-raised chicken for dinner. JR: There are laws against cruelty to animals in every single one of the 50

states. Every state has legislation prohibiting certain treatment of animals as “criminally cruel.” But it’s also true that every single one of the 50 states exempts animals raised for human consumption from that legislation. Which basically means, you can do things to animals raised for food that, if you did those same things to a dog or a cat, you’d be put in jail — it would be a felony. You don’t have to be a vegetarian or an animal rights activist to be appalled. SH: No one really wants to know; it’s too disturbing. We go into a form of active denial in order to keep doing what we’re doing. JR: I think there’s karma attached to that denial. We willfully avert our gaze, and then consume these animal products that have been produced with such tremendous suffering. SH: This reminds me of your question regarding the topic of this interview; the March issue is focused on health and wellness. What I appreciate about your own work is the way you have linked the personal health of the individual with the health of the planet’s greater body. Do you also see this as relating to our economic health in any way? JR: I do. I think we’ve bought into a definition of success that impoverishes us as human beings. When we say that someone is a success, or that someone is successful, isn’t it true what we’re really saying is that they have made a lot of money? SH: Yeah. We rarely say, oh look how healthy that person is, or how happy. JR: Yes. Or, look what a beautiful life that person is living; look how creative they are or how kind, or look how much love or laughter they bring into the world. We define success in monetary terms. When we do that it alienates us from our ability to live truly rich lives. After leaving his inheritance behind, John married and started a new life. The young couple lived very simply for many years, even after the birth of their son, Ocean: “Actually, we were very poor.” John began writing books on subjects he felt passionate about. Soon, he had eight best-sellers and money began to flow into their lives: “It was good money; money I’d made doing something I loved and believed in, and that I believed contributed to people’s health and well-being rather than compromising it.” They became successful in monetary terms. They had a friend who was an attorney and financial investor and that friend, like lots of other well-meaning people, invested the Robbins’ funds with Bernard Madoff. JR: I’d never even heard the name until the day he was arrested for running the biggest Ponzi scheme in the world. First of all, what happened to us has happened to many people today — more slowly perhaps, but no less devastating. We’re living in an economic time that’s very different then the one that many of us expected. This is forcing us to find resourcefulness and resilience, creativity, and connections with one another. Money sometimes breeds entitlement in people. I don’t think anyone should be ashamed of having money but I don’t think anyone should be ashamed of not having money, either.

SH: Well, I think the economic crisis is happening for a reason. Just like any other addiction, maybe we need to hit bottom. In the introduction to your book, The New Good Life: Living Better Than Ever in an Age of Less, you wrote that Americans now spend nearly seven times as much time shopping as they do playing with their kids. 34% of those polled ranked shopping as their favorite activity, which was double the number who preferred being in nature. JR: When you see so many people defining themselves by what they buy, what they own — it’s a spiritual crisis as well. The sickness is that we start to love things and use people. We have to re-learn how to use things and love people. SH: Where do you see the new technology in all of this? Is it leading us closer to that goal, or is it pulling us further away from it? JR: I believe it is both. Social networking and the Internet are powerful forces. It’s all in how we use them. An example of the negative that everyone is familiar with is spam. It takes time to deal with; it’s annoying. Sometimes it succeeds in stealing information, money and even identities. It plants viruses. On the other hand, the Internet and emails and texting enable people to be in touch rapidly across the world. It allows us to share information, inspiration, and to make connections in a meaningful way. SH: Or even organize peaceful revolutions. JR: Yes. If there’s a break-through in medicine, if there’s a break-through in healing, it’s possible for us to learn about it instantaneously. That is a tremendous power. There’s a prayer called the serenity prayer. I think it applies here as well. We ask for help in accepting the things we can’t change and courage to change what we can, and the wisdom, most importantly, to know the difference. People in recovery use that prayer to stay clear and focused on the task at hand and to live one day at a time. Right now, we are a society addicted to many unhealthy things. SH: You said we look in our foods for taste, cost, and convenience. Things are put in food that makes it even more addictive, like salt and sugar, flavor enhancers and additives. JR: Many of us have food addictions;

often those addictions will trigger food allergies. It’s a fascinating topic of research and study. What we need to do when making food decisions is not just consider taste and convenience, but also the quality of the food and what impact digesting that food will have on our bodies, and our health. SH: Sometimes when I hear about the food choices people make — especially when it comes to their children, and this includes lifestyle choices as well — it seems as if some people have given up; like they lack the energy and are too depressed to care. An “I just want to feel better right now” mentality. Of course, as any addict knows, that doesn’t work. JR: Well, yes. It’s short-term gratification, short term thinking. We see it in corporations where the emphasis is on net quarter’s profits at the cost to the climate, costs to the environment — even the costs to the shareholders is not factored into the equation. Our attention span has become so narrowed, our ability to concentrate and to focus has become so dislocated, we’ve lost the sense of continuity. We can’t plan seven generations in advance as the Iroquois used to do; that type of thinking is almost an anathema today. SH: I think we’re just moving too fast. JR: Yes, and we’ve lost something that now renders us more vulnerable to our addictions and it renders us prey to whomever sells at the seemingly lowest cost. SH: It’s our own dislocation from nature. How do you and your family eat? JR: We eat a nutrient-rich diet with lots of greens and beans and berries, mushrooms and onions and seeds, some brown rice and quinoa, and we eat a lot of vegetables from our own garden and from farmer’s markets. We don’t try to be perfect; we hold the enjoyment of food as a substantial pleasure. I feel more pleasure, for example, from eating an organic baked potato then I do from eating potato chips or a potato loaded with butter or sour cream. It’s easy for us now because we’ve all re-trained our palates. I grew up eating a huge amount of ice cream. I ate ice cream for breakfast. When people feel sorry for me because I no longer eat ice cream I say, please don’t worry; I ate enough of it for about 20 lifetimes!

SH: So, if you look at you and your family, it seems like you are all healthy. There’s no sign of obesity, or illness. JR: No, not in my current family. In my family of origin, there was plenty of obesity and illness. I have one son, Ocean. He’s 38 now and he didn’t have his first cavity until he was 18. He never had an ear infection. He had his first cold at 17. At 10, he was running marathons. He gave that all up because he had other things to do in his life. I’m very proud of the kind of person he’s turned out to be and I’m thrilled that he’s such a fine human being. SH: I love how your son seems to have taken off from your passion and your journey and yet defined it as uniquely his own. I understand he was a recent recipient of the Jefferson Award.* JR: Yes. I feel like the launching pad. His life is soaring. SH: That’s wonderful. Thank you John, for taking the time to talk with us today. Back in the late eighties a book came out that was titled Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow. Simply put, it was about finding a career built on something you love to do — or in other words based on your passion. I never read the book but surprisingly it happened, mostly by chance, that my avocation morphed into my vocation.

On the counter are those new, neoprene and cloth two-toned garden gloves that look like something you’d wear while urchin diving. My gloves at home have more dirt in them than on them so I add a pair to my purchase.

After years of gardening in my own back yard and then an accidental degree in horticulture, I paid my dues with a ’77 Ford truck, a mower and an edger. Today the equipment is gone and I mostly work for folks who already employ regular gardeners. In other words, now I get to do “the good stuff” and frequently enjoy showing homeowners and backyard gardeners how to successfully do it themselves.

On the way home, I shamelessly snatch a leafless Charlie Brown ficus tree from a neighbor’s curbside green bin. I gently place it in the bed of my truck and hope nobody sees.

Garden coaching, pruning roses and fruit trees, coaxing orchids into re-bloom and growing veggies and flowers are now what I do at work. Best of all — I still play in the soil, get dirty and at the end of the day happily shake the compost and fertilizer out of my shoes and shorts. After a workday of trimming, feeding, weeding and watering for other folks, I enthusiastically go home and do the same in my own garden. Once there, as I go from one pruning or repotting task to another, time stands still or rather it goes so fast that, before I know it, I have to tear into another sack of bat guanofortified potting soil by the dim glow of my porch light. This furor of planting, potting and pruning is a phenomenon known to every diehard gardener. It’s puttering or tinkering but with a mad vengeance — a manic, frenzied, task-driven, euphoric state of horticultural bliss. Picture an over-caffeinated zombie with a green thumb and a rake. One friend refers to it as being in the gardening zone. Another calls it dinking. “I was out in the garden dinking,” she’ll report to me with a blissful sigh and a pair of Felco #2 pruning shears holstered on her hip like a six shooter. Dinking for me goes something like this. I venture out into my garden in the morning and discover that I should thin out and clean up my special: “variety unknown” container-grown bamboo. Deciding instead that it should be divided, I go to the nursery to pick up a second, squatty, tub-shaped container. At the nursery, I spot some tomato plants that I must have. I remember to get potting soil for the bamboo and then can’t resist some Veronica “Georgia Blue” ground cover that I always wanted to try in a large pot. At the check out there’s a flashy

Back in my garden I realize that I didn’t remember the squatty, tub-shaped container that I originally ventured out for. I put aside the pot-bound bamboo and I move on to the tomato plants. Since I have an urgent need to amend, I think it best to work some compost into the bed first which works me up into a weeding frenzy. The phone is ignored. Friends invite. It is imperative that I divide another orchid. Task completed, I hang an orchid and a new wood-slatted basket in the lemon tree. While up on the ladder, I remove some of the dead wood from the tree and pick some lemons for a neighbor. I fill a bucket then go back up to get some more for the gals at the coffee place. While spiraling into this vortex of gardening, cuttings are taken and seeds are saved or planted. Heirloom plants are divided, soaked and fed. As those same cuttings, shoots and sprouts turn into lush hanging baskets, vines, and shrubs, I can’t help thinking that another plant sale is imminent. I’ve come to realize that I am fortunate in that what I do at work is mostly the same as what I enjoy doing when I am not at work. Whether I call it tinkering, puttering, dinking or getting into the gardening zone, the location does not matter as the satisfaction has grown to be the same in either soil. And I know this; if you love making things grow and working in the soil and, you become a gardener by trade, you will discover that although the money doesn’t necessarily follow, at the end of the day you are likely to find that there will be no shortage of mulch in your socks and underwear.
