Marianne Williamson has been on a journey since she touched foot upon the planet. She has taken herself far and wide, stretching her vision, cultivating ways to impact and change her world as much as ours. Her words are an invitation to liberation. Her abbreviated quote “our worst fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure” speaks to the direction we are invited to travel down. WP: Let’s start with a bit of what

your childhood was like. MW: I had wonderful parents; my father was a magical character. He was an immigration lawyer who had grown up extremely poor and had very strong feelings about social justice. There was this left wing lawyer for the Chicago seven named William Kunstler. And I often say that my father was a cross of William Kunstler and Zorba the Greek.

WP: There was a film about this

gentleman, William Kunstler? He was a famous civil rights attorney on the board of the ACLU. MW: I would not be surprised. And my father and mother were world travelers so I was taken all over the world with my siblings. People would ask my father why would you take your young children, they won’t even remember much of it and his response was “it will get under their skin”…and it did. He took us to Saigon in 1965, I was 12 years old. He wanted us to see the ravages of war. We would never think about it the same way afterwards. My mother was traditional and very loving. The older I get the more I appreciate and cherish the memory of both my parents and all of my family.

WP: So that early journey when you

were 7, 8, 10, 12, 15 and so forth, you were out traveling and as you look back on it, because it’s difficult sometimes to be at that age and see it through the eyes that you see it through now but going back to that age, what was it that was salient for you? What seared something upon your being? MW: My father used to say, “You have to have a sense of adventure”. My father was a person who lived life very passionately, with deep commitment. Social justice issues were extremely important in my household. I was at the tail end of the 60’s generation so the values that my parents instilled fed easily into the social revolution of the 60’s.

WP: And would you say, the way you

described your father, that sense of adventure, that sense of social justice, it feels as though it was impregnated into you? MW: Definitely and this was true of my brother and sister as well. What those times did not have was a context for the inner search. And that began for me during college. Everyone started reading Ram Das, Allen Watts. I was interested. So I took my first philosophy class at fourteen and began as a teenager in the inner search and the inner journey as well, both academic and non-academic, Eastern and Western. Tell me about

Hagel, tell me about astrology. Tell me about Jesus tell me about Buddha. I always had the fervor of a Jew and the tribal identification with my Judaism even though I was not taught enough about my own religion.

WP: And when you mention the

word confirmed did you mean Bar Mitzvah? MW: No, in Judaism as much as in Christianity there is confirmation so I was not Bat Mitzvah’d but confirmed, around the age of 15.

WP: And as you were speaking of those early years what do you see as pivotal moments, discoveries that drew you into the unearthing process about spirituality, about philosophy, about social justice? MW: Well, I always had a natural curiosity but it was my own suffering that led me to what I now see as having been the deeper search. My suffering was not unique. It’s the suffering involved in growing up, of trying to find who you are. It was garden variety but that fact didn’t make it any less painful for me.

WP: The pain comes in different

shapes and colors but it still has the thread, color and taste of pain. It’s an interesting observation how it’s there for almost all of us.

MW: I was searching and like every-

one else in my mid-20’s, I picked up A Course in Miracles (ACIM). And as I’ve said many times, I felt as though I had been on this huge search. I knew I was at the cathedral. I walked up the steps, bloodied my knees, bloodied my elbows, got to the top of the steps and I stood before the cathedral door and it was locked. And in ACIM I found the key to open the door and low and behold, it was simply the person standing in front of you. ACIM doesn’t claim to be for everyone but for me that was the door that opened a world of answers.

WP: And it became, in some way, a

platform from where you launched yourself. What I mean by that is, what you teach and what you espouse is really deeply tethered to ACIM. MW: Absolutely, but at that time, when I first found ACIM, I had no idea that the furthest thing from my mind would have been that this would be a platform for me. I simply saw it as a kind of personal salvation for my own personal health.

WP: I’m always fascinated with peo-

ple who connect with ACIM in this respect. Speaking through my own eyes, your initial relationship with it can be rather complex, I mean the book is not an easy read. MW: I always say that my book ‘Return to Love’ is the cliff notes. You know, what you are saying is very true unless and until it is time for you, then all of a sudden the book that seems so complicated is something that you can’t put down.

WP: I see it the same way. I see it creates a turning point, a flash point. Oh there’s what it is, I get it. MW: Once you do, you do.

WP: So that was when you were in

your early 20’s, late 20’s? MW: Mid-20’s I think is when I first saw ACIM, maybe 26.

WP: Alright, in schooling what had

you pursued? MW: Interestingly enough I was a mix major of philosophy and drama.

I’m one of the few people who lived my major. However, I left school in my junior year and a while after that I began my journey of hippie-dom, schooling at the University of New Mexico and the University of Texas but I never actually graduated, much to my parent’s dismay

WP: And then where were you off to? MW: I lived in New Mexico, I lived

in New York and then I went back to Texas. When I was living in Houston I had a bookstore, and I began a small, group reading around ACIM. I first started reading it in New York.

WP: Was it a garden variety store or

a metaphysical type bookstore? MW: It was more general stuff. And when I moved to LA shortly thereafter and I got a job working at the Philosophical Research Society, Stanley Hole’s place in Los Feliz. I was a student of ACIM and was asked if I’d like to give a talk about it. And it was so interesting. I’m pretty sure it was in October 1983. I assume I have given thousands of lectures by now and I couldn’t tell you what I wore at any of them but I can tell you the sweater. I wore the skirt, the earrings, the necklace; I wore the pantyhose and the shoes. It was a big day for me.

WP: Well, it was a huge day in a lot

of ways. This door opened for you into a larger arena. MW: Well, I didn’t even know it would lead to anything else. He called to see if I would do a weekly talk. I did of course, I wanted to. And when I had first started reading ACIM I remember having said a prayer, “please use me”. And I remember hearing about Judith Scotch, she was the President of The Foundation. Of all places, she was in Houston to talk about ACIM. I remember thinking, “Oh what a magnificent thing to do with your life, just moving around traveling talking about ACIM”. When I started talking in Los Feliz the aids endemic tragically burst onto the scene and it took a while before western medicine had anything to offer. But it also took a while before the organized religious institutions had anything to say. So here was this Continued on Page 9

This is, what I would like to do, I would like to start writing, do this, do that? MW: I was blessedly naïve. I had never really left behind the kind of hippie mentality so I was inadvertently pure.

Center for Living was as much a support for people who came to my lectures, as for anyone else. I think this gets lost on the new breed of so called seekers. Seeking ultimately without service means nothing or can become, at the very least, an exercise in unrecognized narcissism.

So I wanted a way to do something in service for people who have life challenging illnesses. And I think in my heart I was coming from the feelings of my own sister’s condition. But at my first fundraiser I realized that everyone who had made the party happen were all these gay men who were involved in AIDS and I realized, oh my goodness, this is who this is for. A place where they could get food, massages, therapy in this house on Sierra Bonita, a place to come during the day and visit. In time I’d say, “Where is Josh”… well he doesn’t come anymore and I’d say “Where is he? He can’t leave his house. How’s he going to eat today?” And the next week I’d say, “Where’s John? Where’s Michael?” And I thought, how are these people going to eat? And that’s how Project Angel food emerged. And we started a Center for Living in New York at that time.

MW: It was 1988. Yes, I was giving

a talk in San Francisco and before the talk I was having dinner with Jerry Jampolsky who wrote the first popularization on ACIM. He said to me, “You should write a book” and I said, “Other people have said that”. And he said, “It’s in your tapes.” And I said, “I don’t know how to get them out of my tapes”. He said, to me “Well let’s just join in consciousness right now. Know there is a book somewhere inside of you. Who would know how to get the material out of the tapes and into a book?” Five days after that, one week to the night after being in San Francisco I was giving a talk in New York and there was a man standing, waiting to meet me at the end of the line and I looked at him and it felt like there was some kind of destiny with him and he introduced himself as a literary agent and asked if I would like to write a book. Of course ACIM says that nothing is stronger than the agreement between two people. And when Jerry and I agreed I guess that was it. The Oprah Show was doing a show on miracles. My book was sent and Oprah saw it said, “I want to read it” and then she really gave me my larger career saying that it was the best book that she had read and then she bought 1,000 copies. Of course her unbelievable generosity and enthusiasm made a tremendous difference in my life and I will be eternally grateful.

WP: Now the number is ten books

out? And you have a new book out? MW: Already out, it’s called ‘Divine Compensation’ and I’m very moved by the kinds of reactions it’s receiv-

ing. Have you seen that book, do you know that book?

WP: I do not as of now. So I was

saying, you’ve done 10 books, Divine Compensation being your most recent one, and I’m curious which of these books has been the most powerful; the book that has untethered you and allowed the most core essence of you to come out more than has already happened? MW: I don’t know if there’s an answer to that exactly. It seems to me that writing books is kind of like having children. You love all of them and they all have their own relationships. I think my deepest emotional relationships, other than return to love, have been with my least two successful books, in a commercial sense. My book, ‘Healing The Soul of America’…

WP: It was ahead of its time. MW: …and my book, ‘Enchanted

Love’. People come up to me and say it’s their favorite book and I share a special bond with them, because you have to be a deep romantic to appreciate it. Another moving one for me was, ‘A Course in Weight Loss’. That book speaks to deep, food addiction in a way that I didn’t expect. This problem is deeper. It was very moving.

WP: So the weight book sounds very interesting. What initiated that? What was the connection to your personal journey? MW: It was a series of letters between Oprah and me.

WP: I want to talk a little bit about your relationship to God. You know we all have a different kind of picture of God and I was wondering what your picture looks like. MW: I’m a Jew and we’re not to have images. I was deeply religious as a little girl. I used to have a ritual every night. I would begin with the Lord’s Prayer. I would have a conversation with God. I would ask for my dead grandmother to come back. Something that was very traumatic in childhood was that my parents had a friend that was having open heart surgery and I, with the magical thinking of a child, had it all planned out. Each night before the surgery I was going to pray for him. But the one night I fell asleep, he died during surgery, and I was traumatized. Still I felt the power of prayer and connection to God. I come from a traditional Jewish family, without guilt, it doesn’t exist in the religion; it’s not part of the theology. And so I was not only not wounded by my religious upbringing I was uplifted spiritually even though I had said earlier that I had not learned enough about my own religion. So when I came to all that as an ACIM student, it was so fresh for me because I wasn’t loaded down with Christian doctrine and dogma and ACIM is not a religion. WP: But in terms of your embracing

Judaism, there’s a set of beliefs in a way that you are bound to what you brought on board. MW: It’s extraordinary in Judaism, there is not doctrine, there is no dogma and it’s extraordinary that way. Continued on Page 33

The Life of Pi Review by Dr. Habib Sadeghi, D.O. n this story by Yann Martel, a young man from India loses his family in a shipwreck and is left to wander the ocean for weeks in a lifeboat with only a few supplies and a vicious tiger. To save his life, the boy constructs a makeshift raft from the ship’s debris and tethers it to the lifeboat. It’s here that he spends most of his time to avoid being eaten by the tiger. Only occasionally does he take brief trips back to the lifeboat to retrieve supplies, until the tiger leaps from under a tarpaulin to take another swipe at him. Throughout the journey, the young man is forced to confront questions from his past through the challenge of his present situation.

We all face vicious tigers in our lives, or as I like to think of them; triggers. Whether it’s a dis-ease, divorce or some other life trauma, the reaction is always the same. We don’t think we can survive it, that it will kill us if we face it. So, we run away. We escape the boat (our present life) and retreat to a makeshift life raft and live a limited existence that’s outside our true selves. Only occasionally do we risk short, quick “test” visits back to the lives we know hold promise and healing for us. Even so, we can’t stay for long because we’re certain the tigers we fear there will eat us alive. So, we’re content to collect our basic supplies and travel along as onlookers to the lives we’re supposed to be leading. We passively wait for our ship to come in and rescue us; endlessly drifting through life not realizing we are our own saviors. Eventually, the young man’s life raft is destroyed and he’s forced to enter the boat and face the tiger that hides beneath the tarpaulin, if he is to have any chance of surviving. So many times, what seems like the worst thing that could possibly happen to us turns into biggest blessing we could ever receive. In this case, the destruction of the young man’s hiding place is what forces him to make the confrontation he’s been avoiding for so long. Continuing to hide from the tiger would mean constant-

ly treading water in the open ocean and certain death. So often, our “survival mechanisms” in life outlive their usefulness and end up destroying us if we cling to them too long. Although it’s a dangerous choice too, entering the boat and confronting the tiger at least carries a viable chance of survival for the young man. Like him, we too must risk leaving our hiding places and survival mechanisms behind and confronting the unseen tigers that hide beneath the tarpaulins of our unconscious. Through many power struggles, the boy learns to navigate the tempestuous creature’s mood swings and coexist with it. In time, the tiger comes to respect the boy as the captain of his ship, while the boy learns to have compassion and grati-

What starts out looking like our worst adversary in life, often turns out to be our best ally. Throughout the film, there is a fierce amount of tension between the boy and the tiger. Although he seems like an obstacle at first, the tiger actually gives the boy a purpose and a reason to survive as he continues to explore ways to get back in the boat, get more supplies and exert his authority. Without this constant goal to focus on, the boy could easily have listed off into hallucinations, unconsciousness and death. Without the tension between them, the entire growth process for the boy couldn’t have happened. It reminded me of the principle of tensegrity. It’s a structural term used by architects that describes how separate cables or struts are stretched to their capacitywithouttouchingeachother. When this happens, they can support a much larger and heavier surface area than they normally could. This is because the tension created between the individual cables makes them collectively stronger, giving the building a greater amount of structural integrity. This is how the huge, domed roofs of Olympic stadiums are usually constructed. Understanding tensegrity, we can see how the tension created in our lives through dis-ease or challenging relationships actually makes us stronger and how we’re really working with the “opposing” force to support a larger goal, mostly our return to wholeness. When we have the courage to move back into the driver’s seat of our own lives, we can face the tigers we’ve been avoiding that hide beneath our subconscious. There will be a power struggle. There will be fear and doubt. They’ll fight us and threaten to annihilate us, but eventually; they will succumb to us and we will consciously navigate our lives once more. We will honor and appreciate the tigers that brought about this change in us and see that they were the solution to the very problems they created for us. The remedy is the toxin. I Love Me, Post PTSD

After working for almost a year in my efforts to fully recover from the severe PTSD I suffered from, I spent eight magical days in Nosara, Costa Rica on a yoga retreat. When I arrived there, almost instantaneously, it felt like the roof had been blown off the prison house I lived in for so many years, the walls came crumbling down all around me, and a whole, new, beautiful world presented itself before my eyes. My life was a living joy, so happy to be alive, the exquisite taste of my own existence as sweet to me as any elixir the world could offer. I didn’t know life could feel this good, and all the time. My soul was in love with my body and my body was in love with my soul, and at night, as I gazed at the ocean of stars above me, I’d

close my eyes, and hear the sounds of all the nature around me – the birds fidgeting in their nests, the insects buzzing, the crickets chirping, the howler monkeys howling – and I felt connected to it all. I opened my eyes, and the stars in the heavens appeared so close to me, I could just reach up and touch them. My existence was pure joy, and love poured forth from my heart and soul to everything that encompassed me. A year ago, though, things were much different. I didn’t want to live anymore. Life had lost all hope, and suicide seemed like the only way out. I was in so much excruciating pain from the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder I felt and experienced after a series of major family traumas followed by the sudden, harsh, and

unexpected departure of my ex-fiancé in October of 2011. What made it so cruel was that I didn’t expect it, I had no way to prepare for it, I’d just spoken to her on the phone and told her I loved her and she responded back with “I love you too.” So when I opened the door of our apartment to find all of her stuff gone when I thought she was out of town spending it with her family, it destroyed me. I was a man dying in the fires of the atomic bomb set off on our relationship, and my life was in the balance. For months, I carried this traumatic experience with me. Every time I opened the door, I kept reliving the nightmare. I had sleepless nights, and when I did sleep, I had terrible nightmares. My mind kept recycling the upsetting memories of the event

trying to make sense of it, but it only made matters worse for me because it kept recycling the pain. For weeks on end I’d just stare at the walls for hours and break down into uncontrollable sobs, in the kitchen, on the floor of my apartment, and in the bathroom. I was on my knees praying to God, grieving so much, asking for His help. I could barely function. I lost weight; I couldn’t or barely ate; at work, I was there in body, but I felt like a walking corpse. All the life had been drained out of me, my heart and spirit were crushed. At times I didn’t know if I was going to make it, the pain was so excruciating. I felt extremely vulnerable and wanted to protect my wounded soul from any who tried to get inside. Paradoxically, I craved intimacy and wanted/needed to feel loved, but was not able to let anyone in for fear of being wounded again. Attached to this extremely sensitive vulnerability was an unbelievable amount of rage inside. I wanted to destroy, I wanted to seek revenge; I wanted to hurt because I’d been so hurt. And now I understand what it means that only hurt people can hurt. You want to hurt the world because the world has hurt you. But at my core, the very essence of my being, didn’t want to cause more pain, so I sat with it, by myself, all alone in my apartment, and faced what was in me that needed to be faced. My apartment became my tomb. A few times I wanted to die. I had suicidal thoughts because I just wanted the pain to stop, but something in me told me to keep going. Just one

Anyone can get PTSD at any age. Most often it is attributed to those who are affected by the horrors of war, or survivors of physical or sexual assault/abuse. It can also occur from emotionally or physically abusive relationships, accidents, disasters, or many other traumatic events. It is an anxiety disorder people get after seeing or living through a dangerous event. Often it goes unnoticed and untreated, and those who have it lead lives of quiet desperation, isolated, and in deep emotional and psychological pain. Perhaps lifetimes of pain were coming to a head to be healed in that moment and the only way it could be healed was for her to do something so extreme that it would force me to the extremes as well – to choose life, or death. I chose life through the path of grace and miraculously, fourteen months later, I’ve never been so in love with who I am as I am today. ollow your instincts” seems like good advice. After all, it seems like the “natural” thing to do. And this is especially true when it’s contrasted with following some tortured, overly-analyzed intellectual reasoning, which may or may not make sense. But blindly following your instincts can actually be a surefire recipe for disaster and set back your spiritual development. Many people confuse instinct with intuition, but they are actually two different things. The dictionary defines instinct as: 1. An inborn pattern of behavior that is characteristic of a species and is often a response to specific environmental stimuli. 2. A powerful motivation or impulse. While, intuition is defined as: 1. The act or faculty of knowing or sensing without the use of rational processes; immediate cognition. 2. Instinctive knowing. This particular dictionary uses the term instinct to define intuition, so it’s no wonder people are confused! Both instinct and intuition involve impulses that originate from outside the conscious mind. What distinguishes one from the other is the source of the impulse.

Your mind operates at three different levels: intellectual, instinctive and intuitive. These levels overlap with one another, but are essentially separate. Your intellectual or conscious mind is used to perform logical problem-solving activities. This is where you exercise your will, with input from your senses and other levels of your mind. The instinctive mind is responsible for running your body’s autonomic nervous system, which regulates your heartbeat, fills your lungs with air, and sends blood throughout your body. Obviously, these functions are vitally important to your health and you’d never want to interfere with their smooth operation. In fact, using your intellectual mind to override your instinctive mind can put your body into disharmony, leading to stress and disease. But this does not mean you should follow your instincts! Your instinctive mind is also responsible for the fight or flight response and the urge to procreate. Can you imagine what our world would be like if we just took whatever object we desired, beat up anyone who disagreed with us, or copulated with anyone without regard to the consequences? Well, the world we live in today often looks like that kind of world! And that’s not a good thing!

As human beings, we possess selfawareness, which distinguishes us from animals. But our animal instincts (fight or flight, urge to procreate, etc.) still exist within us. They are our heritage, and represent thoughts that were important for survival at one stage in our species’ evolution. But they are not necessarily helpful to our spiritual evolution. It is up to you to choose to exercise your will and master these impulses, with input from your intuition. Your intuition is your inner master or higher self, attempting to communicate with you. This is what is responsible for creative breakthroughs and insights, which propel our human race forward. Intuition is altruistic and loving, and, in the mystic’s worldview, that which leads to peace, bliss and Oneness. Several years ago, I got an opportunity to tap into each aspect of my mind in their purest forms. I was visiting a tiger sanctuary in the Everglades, west of Miami. The curator was caring for several subspecies of endangered tigers, which were used for breeding purposes to help the animals regain their numbers. Tigers are the largest cats on earth, and the golden tiger is the largest subspecies.

While I was relaxing in the shade of a tree, without warning, a wave of primal emotion swept over me that jolted me to instant alertness. My instinctive mind was silently yelling “Danger!” Looking up, about 50 feet away, I saw a huge tiger lying motionless atop an eightfoot perch in the middle of his pen. As soon as they stopped near the fence, the tiger leaped off his perch and fully splayed himself against the chain link fence on his hind legs, tantalized by the “morsel of food” just out of his reach. The tiger watched as the furious curator threw the not-too-bright parents and their child off the grounds. Intellectually, I knew I was not in any danger. As I stood there, suddenly, I wanted to feel what the tiger was feeling. Slowly, I began walking towards the tiger. The tiger ignored me until the child was out of sight. Then, he dropped down on his four legs and began to stare at me. I looked into his eyes and communicated the thought, “I am like you.” He walked towards me and began pacing back and forth, his eyes locked onto mine, with just a

I continued to tell him, “I am like you.” Still staring at me, in mid-stride, he stopped right in front of me, then laid down at my feet, like a dog. I crouched down to get closer. He closed his eyes and went to sleep. The curator returned to see that his tiger was not only calm, but had made a new friend. In this encounter I got to sense 1) my instinctive mind warn me of possible danger; 2) my intellectual mind reason that I was actually not in danger; and 3) my intuitive mind inspire me to let myself commune or energetically merge with the tiger. So it is in everyday life. When you receive an “impulse” from outside of your conscious mind, ask yourself if it’s an instinct or your intuition. Is it based on the remnants of an urge for survival... or is it the drive toward Oneness? The more you listen to your intuition and take action based on it, the faster your life and the world will transform for the better. Everything is Energy… Chakra is the Sanskrit word meaning “wheel” or “turning”. Chakras are energy vortices that can be found supporting the human physical vessel. It has been my personal understanding from working with these vortices, and the teachings from spirit, that these energy centers support physical life from the non-physical or spiritual realms into the physical. These vortices when off balance, or not metabolizing fully, can create distortions in our reality. When a Chakra has been “out of balance” for some time it can and does lead to physical disease. All disease begins as an energetic imbalance which stem from something within your internal landscape needing attention. When we begin to work and honor these natural, organic systems within the body we truly begin to master our health and wellbeing as well as evolve into higher consciousness.

into Higher Soul Expression / Christ Consciousness The eighth chakra is located approximately 8 to 12 inches above the head. This is a chakra that is not directly located within the physical body like the main 7 chakras, however it does have influence over the high chest region between the heart and the throat right below the collar bone known as the High or Christed Heart. The eighth chakra can be accessed through meditation and “lightwork”. Typically energy work will not access the eighth chakra for it is in these upper chakras that one is working with the Light of who they are. It is in the eighth chakra that the Geometry of our personality, will and ego, begin to project into our physical experience. In the eighth chakra we hold the “blueprint” of our personality, where ego, will, how we come into this world

and function, and most of what we know about ourselves in our normal formative years originates. This first phase programming of the human experience is a very important phase for any person and should never be rushed. It is how we learn to project our personalities into the physical world. Many people never evolve beyond this point…at least until now. Eventually, we begin to “access” Higher Soul frequencies. When you activate the eighth chakra, a ball of golden white light will descend to the top of the crown and sit there for a spell. My experience is that others can see this ball of light. This is sometimes referred to as the “Soul’s Star Seed”. It will sit there until the Soul “fuses” within the core energy of the person and then will sit in the High Heart right below the collar bone. Eighth Chakra & The Expression of the Soul What I’m coming to understand and experience is that this chakra is not the Soul itself, as some state, but rather where the soul will dwell after the opening and clearing of the persona/ego in which one has operated from for so long. It is through this process that one then comes to beginning to live from the High Heart or the Christed Heart; for we are all Christed in our true nature, which is the KNOWING that the Kingdom of Heaven is within. When this occurs, then the eighth chakra is expressing the geometry of the Soul’s High expression. The chain of awakening within the chakra system in not necessarily in an orderly or logical manner. While one cannot open the eighth chakra until significant opening and clearing has been done in the lower 7 chakras. What this also means is that as long as a portion of you is still having the experience of the outer world as something that you react to as opposed to something that you create from within, and as long as you are holding onto the geometry of the persona and ego versus Higher Universal Truth, this chakra will not fully open.

The fat blunder A Mythbuster Alert

Every wonder why, as a nation, we are getting fatter and fatter, and yet we all seem to be on “low-fat” diets. Something doesn’t seem to add up.

t turns out that the blunder is that we make ourselves fat by eating fat. There are healthy fats and unhealthy fats. But since “fat” is generally regarded as the cause of our obesity problem, we don’t differentiate the way we should. We see all fat as inherently bad for us. But fat is essential to health. First of all, healthy fats provide a feeling of satisfaction and prevent overeating. It is too easy to sit down with a bag of potato chips and polish off the whole thing. Same with corn chips, crackers, popcorn, bread, cereal, pasta, and other starchy foods. Notice that these are mostly low-fat foods. It’s easy to overeat them and what does your body do with the overflow of these starchy calories? It stores them as…fat! Something else about fat. It’s a necessary catalyst for nutrients. Almost every vitamin and mineral is to some degree, fat soluble. You can eat all the right nutrients, but if you don’t have the right amount of fat to act as the catalyst, you can actually become malnourished. Fats are also needed for healthy joints and connective tissues. And consider that the human brain is

80% fat. Not only have we become a nation of people getting fatter with our low-fat diets, we’re starving our brains. And so we’re getting crankier. And we’re tired all the time. Fat is fuel. It burns the exact same way as those carbs we’re overeating. The secret is to eat the right amount of healthy fats and avoid the unhealthy ones. Unhealthy fats are everywhere. A little history lesson – back in the 90s, food manufacturers came out with cheap ways to cook things. Suddenly we were all eating foods cooked in canola oil or safflower oil or soybean oil or really inexpensive hydrogenated vegetable oil. These unhealthy fats turned out to be one of the primary causes of putting on pounds. Why? Fats break down under high temperatures. Law of nature – when fats are heated or cooked, free radicals are produced that when consumed, suppress the thyroid. You zap your thyroid and you zap your metabolism. Slow metabolism = weight gain. So to offset that, we started reducing our intake of all fats. We started looking for low-fat alternatives

by Billy Merritt and starving ourselves of (necessary) fats and buying into the calorie-counting protocol as a way to discipline ourselves. And that’s a recipe tailor-made for failure. The trick is not to eliminate fat from your diet. The trick is to add the right fats. One-hundred calories of the right fat (what you might find in an avocado, for instance), is way more satisfying than one-hundred calories of chips or crackers. Same amount of calories, much different level of satiation. The right fats – the elite fats – come in two categories: saturated and unsaturated. It is easy to tell the difference. Saturated is solid at room temperature, unsaturated is liquid at room temperature. You need both. Yes, contrary to what you might have heard, you need even the saturated kind. Unsaturated fats can be found in avocados, raw nuts and seeds, and oils like olive oil. Olive oil is the elite of the elites. Law of nature: coldpressed olive oil is satisfying and you’ll never get fat on it. Impossible? Possible and true, with one exception: when it’s heated, for the same reason as described above. Fats break down at high temps.

This, by the way, is why fried foods aren’t good for us even if they’re cooked in olive oil. Fried foods are the worst! Want to cook with oil? Then it’s essential to use saturated fats which don’t break down in heat. Butter or ghee (pure butter oil that is less likely to burn) or coconut oil. What? Butter?? Sure, I know I’m raising eyebrows but trust me on this. The key, of course, is moderation. Too much saturated fat will raise your cholesterol (even cholesterol-free oil like coconut oil) but two to three tablespoons a day is fine, especially if you have a moderately active lifestyle. Want proof? Eskimos. Lots of fat, very little plant foods, active lifestyles. And almost non-existent heart disease.

Some specific foods that I always get questioned about: Eggs. Bad for you, right? Wrong. Eggs just might be the perfect food. Sure, they might be high in cholesterol, but they don’t raise your cholesterol. There’s saturated fat in eggs, but only to the tune of less than 1%. That’s why our ancestors (who never heard of heart disease) were able to eat them for hundreds of thousands of years. Animal products. While animal protein in our diet is a debatable subject (and though I point above to Eskimos who eat lots of fat which in their case is from meat, their meat source is mainly seal so not pertinent here), be careful with meat. Cooked beef, pork and chicken all require a substantial degree of moderation. It is recommendable to purchase naturally raised without hormones or antibiotics, grass-fed and grassfinished versus corn etcetera-fed

meats. I.e. from tried and true local farmers’ markets suppliers.

It is easy to tell the difference. Saturated is solid at room temperature, unsaturated is liquid at room temperature. You need both.

Dairy. It’s best to go with skim milk, right? Wrong again. The whole low fat dairy thing has been nothing less than a disaster. Two-percent and skim milk should just be called what it is – lactose concentrate. Or milk sugar. That’s all it is. And it’s harder to digest. This is why we’re all becoming lactose sensitive. Our bodies are rebelling. Drink organic whole milk, just drink less of it which you’ll do naturally because it’ll satisfy much quicker than the milk sugar stuff. Carbs and sugars. Disasters. Like a drug, these are what we’re eating to try to get back that sense of satiation that we’ve lost to our low-fat diets. This stuff is weight gaining with zero nutrition, not to mention food for parasites and malaise. Okay, so now the myth has been busted. Big picture: integrate healthy fats into your diet, preferably by integrating them with more plant foods. Add olive oil to your salad. Butter or ghee or coconut oil to soup. Eat more raw nuts and seeds and avocados. Experimentation is suggested as body types are different. While know that you have way more flexibility with proportions between fat, carbs and protein than you think. I challenge you to go with this protocol for one month. If weightloss is a priority for you, I am confident it will have some degree of impact. Not to mention the substantial impact on your overall health and longevity. Spreading Positive Transformation to the World at Large by Brian Coe Pmentropelled by the visions and commitof countless individuals coast to

coast, festivals have reached an all-time height of popularity in American culture. From the 50,000 who attend Burning Man each summer to the handful of die-hards who make the annual Segway Fest happen, just about anything under the sun can be celebrated in the form of a festival. With so many types presently in existence, it’s important to decipher what exactly is being celebrated, revered, remembered, or downright overlooked. It’s not entirely uncommon for these gatherings, especially the music and arts variety that have come to be known as transformational festivals, to set forth ideas to guide those in attendance; but the lessons are usually vague, fleeting and all too quickly forgotten. Fortunately, the visionaries behind Lucidity have taken this phenomenon into account and created a Six Year Story Arc as a sustainable navigational tool for participants not only at the festival itself, but in and for the rest of their lives.

Lucidity Festivals are founded on the open-source philosophy of encouraging participants to bring their own music, art, dance, healings and teachings to share with others. Attending any or all is an opportunity to explore one’s own identity to such an extent that positive collective transformation takes place. Waring participants of who they are, what they believe in and how their own strengths and weaknesses can best be integrated into society at large. While a time to celebrate, it is foremost an opportunity to learn, grow and achieve positive transformation as individuals and collective inhabitants of the Earth. It’s a time to turn to our ancestors and ancient traditions for wisdom and start working together for a better, more sustainable tomorrow.

“Crossroads”, Lucidity’s fifth year, represents the collective courage and perseverance necessary to overcome obstacles and continue to be light in a world of darkness. While we are not alone in our struggle, we still face oppressive forces that slow down our quest to improve the world at large; thus this reaffirmation of the validity of our efforts to make positive, peaceful and powerful changes in society. The final installment is “Eudaimonia”, in reference to “having a good indwelling spirit”. This sixth year will be a time to show gratitude for the journey that we have been on together and the animals, elders and spirits who have helped us along the way. Unified as one, participants now take the whole of what they’ve learned and apply it out in the world; no longer just ideas, but actual tangible actions that impart real, meaningful change in individuals and communities alike.

other way, as I have sat in a countless classes, I mean I see people sometimes who participate and are of a different religion, then the mere mention of Christ, of Jesus, creates some turmoil. MW: That’s my point because Christians have something to get over.

WP: But these reactions are coming

from the non-Christians. MW: That’s because of the times in which we live in.

WP: …there is a dearth of comfort. MW: Which is understandable, I al-

ways say, “Jews don’t have a problem with Jesus, they have a problem with Christianity”. Can you blame them? So, that’s number one. Also, we’re living in a time where there is this knee jerk assumption that anyone who mentions Jesus or Christ is a born again Christian and that’s tough. I just came back from a conference in Northern California where there is this very lovely Eastern Buddhist perspective, but such political correctness. God forbid you mention the word ‘God’. There seem to be an assumption that if you would say the word ‘God’, that your IQ is less and your religious perspicacity is unsophisticated. People have said to me if you had said the word ‘God’ less, you’d probably have a bigger career.

WP: Well, you’ve had quite an amazing career thus far. MW: Well, I think that in any work

we do, the first person you’re seeking to delight is yourself.

WP: Well, it should be that. I often

think we don’t do that but it’s certainly critical. MW: The word ‘God’ works for me.

WP: I want to come to where you’re

at now. What’s on the agenda for you? What are you looking to create, and what are you looking to support. MW: I’m at a place that is typical of this moment; I think a lot of people are thinking, “What do I do now”. So I’m in deep inquiry. And there is a sense of urgency, so I am living that question. I have done these conferences called ‘Sister Giant’. I’ve never seen the divide between spirituality and politics that some people seem convinced is there. I’m interested in both micro and macro spirituality. If my spirituality is only about love between you and me, but doesn’t include the questions of what love means for 17, 000 children who are dying; starving every day on the planet; doesn’t include moral questioning about the injustice of mass incarceration or income inequality, then that’s just easy love. You know a lot of people talk these days about mindfulness but they inaccurately equate mindfulness with spirituality. Spirituality is not spirituality if it fails to address the suffering of other sentient beings. Buddha would not have become enlightened had he not jumped over the walls of his father’s compound and seen human beings suffering for the first time. There is no serious religious or spiritual philosophy that

does not speak to the tragedy of human existence when spiritual ignorance is present.

WP: So when you spoke about mind-

fulness in a way, not necessarily being reflective of spirituality or embracing it or having it woven into it, do you see mindfulness as being synonymous with awareness? And in the sense that if it is linked to awareness, in that awareness, that we get to that space eventually? MW: Yes, but like with any other conversation, somebody has to mention it. We Americans are masters of convenience. And some people speak of the mindfulness conversation equating it with spirituality. I think it’s more what you just said; it is a step on the path. Everything spiritual is mindful, but not everything mindful is spiritual. And I believe our failure, speaking of the contemporary generation of seekers to address human suffering, has lessened our voice and influence in the culture. We have it within capitalism, but that’s not ultimate success. Ultimate success is that you harness your voice and service to something bigger than yourself. I think that the next step for the contemporary seeker is to move from the micro to the macro spiritual question. You lack gravitas if you do not deal with the question of evil. Now we could say evil is fear. Of course it is, but still, the bottom line is that genocide just happened and is happening. We are awakening from that silly stupor, of thinking “all I have to do is just deal with myself”. That’s Continued on Page 39

spring has sprung once again, I cheerfully look at my garden through my office patio doors. Tomatoes, jalapenos, and zucchini planted firmly in the ground ready to sprout; small buds appearing with the promise of a delicious meal. This growth, this unfoldment of nature, is ref lecting the workings of mind. Everything you see, down to the smallest and seemingly insignificant detail, is a visible expression of your Consciousness; a mirror image of your innermost Soul substance. ‘Thought in action’ you might say, acting out your own personal movie. However, in your life’s play you are the writer, director, and actor. You are in charge. You are the cause of all that befalls you every day of your life, and with this responsibility comes the awakening and the thrill of feeling alive.

Scientists have proven that our skin and our other bodily organs renew themselves constantly. This regeneration surely symbolizes the constant rejuvenation of life in the mental. This progressive unfoldment is also pictured forth from seed to fruition in nature, from the mind seed or spark in the mental, to a nurtured thought becoming a full-blown idea developing into visual concepts. Held long enough, these grow into convictions and finally into visible manifestations. Renewal also means leaving the old and outgrown behind; shedding the skin like the caterpillar into the butterfly. Lastly, the idea of death is nothing but renewal of the Soul, with its rebirth into another dimension, where the progress of unfoldment continues. The gentle awakening of spring; representing the infancy state

of Consciousness with its germs sprouting eagerly, unfolding tiny f lora and curiously peeking out of mother earth’s fertile ground. Still small yet powerful seeds of Life are always pushing upwards towards the light— just like our Soul wants to push upwards towards God’s glory. The gentle warm promise of spring embraces our Spirit and gives renewed hope to a new day. And when approaching or in the full splendor of summer, we embrace the life-sustaining light and warmth of the sun. Beyond Guilt or Innocence

ullying, abuse, molestation, rape, the most disturbing crimes to humanity are those of extreme perversion subordinating extreme innocence. Yet from century to century, millennia to millennia and culture to culture, the cultivation of “innocence” appears negligible despite all of humanity’s amazing technological achievements. Was there any less torture, abuse, guilt or perversion the past century? Has humanity even edged a morsel closer to an Age of Innocence? The reason humanity perpetuates such an overwhelmingly violent existence lies in the root of man’s non-understandings. If religion, law or country were the answer, we certainly would have stumbled across living in and from our innocence by now. While it is certainly wise and necessary to create laws in a society where the many are protected, it is equally important to evolve society by supplying the resources that expand the consciousness of each individual. Can we really expect a society to evolve its members by further polarizing one another? By labeling and judging “guilt” or “innocence” we more deeply polarize, engrain and perpetuate a continuous reactive pattern. For instance, pretend that a man is convicted for abusing his wife. While certainly sensible to convict this husband, for the evolution of the couple, labeling and in effect making him “guilty” and her “innocent” does little more than put off the inevitable repetition of a set of behaviors. It is accurate that he abused his wife, however making him more “guilty” for it and her “innocent” perpetuates the loop. If the end goal is to create more amicable, cordial conduct, condemning one member of the party rarely shifts the pattern. Ironically it is the guilt itself that further maintains the “guilty” party’s repetition of the pattern. By attempting to stack another layer of guilt atop the “guilty”, we bury this person deeper

and deeper with greater angst, frustration and self-hatred. What we bury and what we condemn indeed repeats. When in fact where the pattern may be broken is by assisting the person who committed the crime in alleviating their guilt, in necessary combination with sharing perspective with the victim on the “guilt” within their innocence. How was this couple punishing eachother in different ways according to their unique perceptions? Were there triggers from childhood that validated punishment and abuse as a form of love? Did one person refrain from intimacy, sex, conversation? How did this couple use the abuse to break down walls in themselves, with one another or with other people? What reveals evident is that it is the extreme “innocent” that experiences conflict with the extreme “perverse”. It is the path of the innocent to attract the perverse and vice versa. Eventually, each polarized position discovers where they embody their opposite within the expression. In the process the innocent becomes a form of guilty, and the guilty a form of innocent. But what then exactly is innocence? What images or feelings does innocence capture in your mind? Habitually, the depiction of pure, serene and pleasurable are associated with innocence. Most frequently portrayed as that which has not been afflicted by certain qualities of humanness; often these human qualities are negative and are categorized as masculine. These “negative” qualities are the very judgments that “innocence” is predetermined to attract and reveal. The attraction to innocence is the fantasy often created of a yesterday, an idea of wholesomeness born of a yearning for a sanctuary protected from the cold hard painful realities that are inevitable in living.

As a society with wisdom, eventually we will transcend judging people as guilty and innocent, instead accessing the knowing of accurate and inaccurate. Along the way sharing with our neighbors the thought process it takes to modify our non-understandings, beliefs and deeds so that we transcend the human reflexive responses that violate the freedoms of another person. Ultimately at our core we all seek freedom, and that freedom we seek is from the demons we struggle within ourselves. It is around our struggle for liberation where we encounter our struggle between guilt and innocence. A wise teacher once shared “to love your enemy” – the enemy is in effect ourselves. If we evolve innocence to mean the expression of the spirit of man, then by helping one another transcend positions of selfrighteous judgment, we enter a new age of deeper communication and transformation. In evolving our consciousness towards honoring our interconnectedness and oneness, our words and actions develop towards honoring one another. Here we become more in tune with expressing our deepest nature, unadulterated love and the untainted innocence that is the universal human spirit. We will discover the purity of spirit that the idea of “innocence” embodies in transcending any judgment of guilt or innocence and in honoring the omnipresent perfection. We are perfectly divine, transcendent to any perception of guilt or innocence. We are not born sinners, and we die only with the transgression of that which we have not appreciated and loved; and for that, also are not judged.

You have a global interest and I want to touch on that. Where do you see things moving in that direction? MW: I think most of us feel that humanity itself is at a cross roads. There is a sense of a race for time, but love and miracles collapse time. The way I see it, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s as though humanity is on the titanic and were headed towards the iceberg. WP: Yes, now letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s do it. But I think

what happens when we hear it and rehear it, that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way for a lot of people to really solidify the concept, for it to really take root. Yes weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard it, you paid some attention to it, but now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like stand in it and anchor yourself in it and yes, take action. MW: And also, serve. Serve you know? People say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;what can I do?â&#x20AC;? You know, get online? What is your passion? Get involved, contribute, help.

WP: Yes, as I, but do you see the miracle as having already happened? MW: Well there are two; you know ACIM says â&#x20AC;&#x153;donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t foster confusionâ&#x20AC;?. On a certain theological level, it already has been. WP: Well, how do you see it in your pragmatic role, manifesting as you tour about, as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re with whomever youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re with, and so forth, what are

whole person would be an enlightened human being and to that my answer would be â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;noâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. I am an integrated human being. If you ask if I am a woman who feels that I live within a space of decency and goodness as the rule rather than the exception, I would say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;yesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

WP: And what would be the areas

you would be seeking to enhance if I were to ask you what would make you more whole? MW: Areas in my own woundedness, past baggage, my own defects.

Seeking a conventional love, a soul mate to fulfill your ‘heart of hearts’, results in exhaustion. Exhaustion because she/he will never, never, never be able to measure up to what you long for. What you long for is only found in your ‘heart of hearts’. The more you try to hang onto what you think is love, the more shriveled up you become. However, out of ignorance, holding onto what is certainly less than what is available in your very own ‘heart of hearts’, is what most do. It is a common mistake reinforced by a glimpse of the divine during physical union.

Insist on demanding from another to fulfill your life, and you will soon become so exhausted from suppression of the real you, that you will find it hard to function. Lots of opportunities or lots of problems – the perspective is yours. When one finds oneself stretched between two immovables, you can hang on or let go. Hanging on pulls you apart and letting go allows the creativity within to find a silver lining, your choice. Know there is support and abundance of wealth, health, knowledge etcetera in your life. If you missed this memo, it is especially serving to get it this month. The key here is to know when to let go. You must be in the moment, to Know. Your tendency to second guess what your letting go might do to others, has become debilitating for you. The more you live according to a set of outdated beliefs, the more you will be stretched out of shape. Challenges are actually opportunities. However, as long as you insist on comparing your insides to others’ outsides you are doomed to unhappiness. Once you stop this insistent comparison your need to control will start shrinking.
