ears ago I had a vegetable garden. My children were young and I was motivated to inspire them with a love for plants and a firsthand experience of where food actually comes from. I hoped they would participate. They were not interested. For me it was a lot of work; the yield was low and the pests were abundant but the biggest deterrent was the shade that was cast by a fast-growing volunteer black acacia. Without sun the plants did not thrive so I admitted defeat and put the shovel and gloves away. This spring the tree came down. It was sad but its branches had taken over the roof of the house and it had to go. In its absence there was brilliant sun basking on the neglected vegetable patch. This sparked in me the desire to revisit the garden. As I positioned my foot on the top of the shovel, I pressed down into the earth. I expected resistance from the clay soil, but instead was surprised by how easily and deeply it plunged. I realized while pulling up the soil and turning it over, that I had officially returned “to the earth.” Now, with a smile on my face, I happily continue amending the soil as I prepare for planting vegetables and herbs once again.

midst the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, one can find peace, tranquility and refreshing beauty in a number of verdant gardens that dot the cityscape. Some are wellknown, such as the beautiful Huntington Gardens in San Marino. Other, less-frequented gardens are rare gems in the City of Angels, perfect for a rejuvenating mini-vacation in the middle of a busy week. Two of my favorites are on the Westside: the UCLA Hannah Carter Japanese Garden, north of the UCLA campus in Bel Air and the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine in the Pacific Palisades. The UCLA Hannah Carter Japanese Garden is a relatively unknown treasure covering just over one acre and located in the community of Bel Air about one mile from the UCLA campus. Completed in 1961, the garden was inspired by the gardens of Kyoto. Many structures in the garden â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the main gate, garden house, bridges and shrine â&#x20AC;&#x201C; were built in Japan and reassembled locally. Ancient stones carvings, water basins and lanterns, a five-tiered pagoda, and key symbolic rocks are also from Japan. The gardens were originally part of the estate owned by the then Chair of the Regents of the University of California, Edward W. Carter, and his wife Hannah. They donated the garden to the University of California in 1965. Set on a steep hillside and overlooking a central pond containing colorful koi, winding stone paths and stairs lead the visitor through the small, intimate garden to a secluded garden house, an outdoor sunken bath, and up the hill to a lovely hokora, or family shrine. Be sure to follow the path behind the garden house to the secluded Hawaiian garden with lush ferns, a wide variety of palms, tropical flowers, and a pond fed by a gently cascading waterfall. he ten-acre Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine, established in 1950 by Paramahansa Yogananda, author of the acclaimed spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, is an inviting oasis in the midst of the Pacific Palisades. Surrounding a lovely central lake, the gardens contain a rich variety of plant life native to all six of the world’s inhabited continents and not commonly seen growing together. Rose gardens bloom near tropical ferns, passionflowers and wisteria vines. On the lake’s steep banks, Cyprus and gingko trees grow alongside clusters of flax, papyrus, and water iris. Desert cacti share the grounds with towering California coastal redwoods and rare Mexican weeping bamboo. The Lake Shrine’s

many varieties of trees include an African tuliptree, a Chinese pistachio tree, fragrant Himalayan champaks, and dwarfed Japanese black pines. Impatiens, cyclamen and other colorful blossoms line the lake’s footpath; while above them sway evergreens, palms, and stands of South American pampas grass. Several waterfalls add to the tranquility with the soothing sound of flowing water. The Lake Shrine serves as a refuge for migratory birds, including herons, wild ducks, and mudhens. The lake also shelters several resident swans and an abundant population of brightly colored koi, as well as numerous turtles, who can often be spotted slowly paddling through the water or sunning themselves on lily pads. Water-Wise Beauty for Your Garden by Linda Harmon

espite being an avid Southern-California gardener for 30 years, attending workshops and listening to speakers, I find I am learning new things constantly. It’s one of the joys of gardening. As you look out your window and itch to get back into your garden, it’s the perfect time to pick up some important tools on water saving and chemical-free pest control. First, consider not only what you plant but the way you choose to plant. Think about the general lay of the land. You will be more successful and save time, frustration and expense. Most importantly by exploring your options, and perhaps changing things up a bit, you can give our Southern California environment a little extra loving care.

In the garden, a good design needs at least one focal point. I suggest a tree. By planting a particular tree you can define the mood of your garden and improve the ecosystem that exists in your yard. Trees slow wind and water erosion, and regulate temperature. Many don’t require extra water after being established and have leaves that add valuable mulch, needing no raking.

more seepage into the water table. Use any concrete you remove to build walkways or short retaining walls for raised beds. Raised beds give you added soil control making it easier to add humus. Humus can help retain moisture while also providing needed drainage for vegetables or fruit trees. Lower your water consumption dramatically by getting rid of grass. You’ve heard this one before, but it ought to be repeated; use grass sparingly. It is a water and maintenance hog that requires fertilizers. Fertilizer is expensive and can end up in run-off, contributing to our ocean’s “dead zones.” Getting off grass can be painless. Remove a little at a time and replace it with drought-resistant and native plants, surrounded by gravel or mulch. Leave your “small patch of green,” if you must, where it extends your living area and nowhere else. I did this several years ago in stages. I first removed my backyard lawn completely, and then started on the front. I retained a small patch for the grandkids to play in or recline on. I don’t miss it. The extra bonus is I have more areas to grow edibles. I put in vegetables, several fruit and ornamental trees, along with drought-tolerant plants to attract birds and butterflies instead. When replanting for added garden interest and health, diversify plantings. You can repeat plantings but alternate them with another variety. According to the experts, this will discourage pests and lower the need for fertilizer. Keep in mind to group your plants according to water needs but be creative, mix it up. Then there’s “mulch magic.” Mulch, mulch, mulch your plants and trees. Chunks of bark, peat moss, or gravel all slow evaporation and keep plant roots cool. Low cost or free mulch is available at many green-waste recycling centers and, if you have access to a mushroom farm it makes fantastic cheap mulch and soil amendment. But when you mulch keep it from making contact with your tree and scrub trunks, as it encourages rot. Last, but not least, when you do water it is healthier for plants and more effective to water in the early morning. The best gauge of soil moisture that I’ve found is actually a neat tool my forestry and arborist friends use: a T-shaped soil tester. It lets you check up to 12 inches beneath the surface so there is less guess work. It is easily

If you aren’t sure what tree is right for you, or where it would be the most effective for shade and water conservation, ask local organizations for help. The Arbor Society has a great website with tree statistics, recommendations and photos. Other groups even teach you to plant trees. Creating ground contours is another way to add focal points to your garden. Contours are aesthetically pleasing because they allow the eye to wander. The irregular ground surfaces they create will capture groundwater, forming small dips and obstacles where the water can pool and be absorbed slowly. You may even want to create an infiltration basin. A basin is typically built at the lowest point of your garden to capture rainwater that then will slowly infiltrate the surrounding soil. Another water saving tip is to use permeable pavers instead of solid concrete when creating a patio or new driveway. Pavers with gravel, decomposed granite, or other permeable materials allow

pushed into the soil, and when you pull it out, it brings up a neat soil sample. Why water the soil if it is already moist below the surface? I also recommend replacing sprinklers with low-volume emitters wherever possible. After you’re done planting, eco-pest control is easy and environmentally friendly. Old as nature itself, it works with nature not against it. Use your plantings to attract “good” insects. Ladybugs are the earth-friendly solution to stubborn aphids and are available at local gardening centers. The birds I have attracted are now busy eating the aphids too. For slugs, snails, and sow bugs, I have found that jar lids filled with leftover beer are an effective solution; they crawl in but don’t crawl out. Also, a good forceful spray with the garden hose works on some pests, and removing infected leaves or branches quickly is a reliable first defense. There are products on the market that are listed as safe for organic agriculture but do the research yourself – I still think nature is best for the home gardener. If you want to learn more about waterwise and earth friendly gardening, the web is a great place to start. As a home gardener you can also get help from a local agricultural advisor or the Master Gardener program through the University of California cooperative extension service. You don’t have to have a farm to get advice. he Master Gardener Program is a marvel of good will and community service. Master Gardeners can help you identify a pest, show you how to test the PH of your soil, and even recommend the perfect plant for that dry, shady spot in your garden. The wonder of it all is that you, too, can become a Master Gardener. The first Master Gardener Program was initiated in Washington state in 1973. Cooperative Extension Service provides horticultural science-based training to volunteers, who then assist Extension agents fielding calls from citizens in urban areas who need help with plants and pests. Master Gardener volunteers are trained in many aspects of horticultural care. In return for this training, certified Master Gardeners share their expertise in their community through workshops, help-lines and information kiosks around the county. Cooperative Extension and Master Gardener Programs, which are affiliated with most land-grant universities, are in every state of the nation. Master Gardener volunteers educate local communities by supplying sound horticultural science to manage the landscape in a sustainable manner. Master Gardeners look at the big picture to integrate environmental and social priorities, such as water conservation and water quality, managing invasive species, and increasing public awareness of the value of drought-tolerant and fire-safe plantings for home and public landscapes.

Naturally, each state has its own challenges with soil, growing seasons, and yield, not to mention pests. Even within the Golden State, the plant hardiness zone varies from one to 24. You might move across town and find yourself in a completely new growing environment. When I moved to California from Colorado, I was amazed at the rich soil in my backyard. It was like chocolate cake, unlike the clay and rock I worked with in Boulder. However, I soon learned that this rich, dark soil had a lot of other fans, including relentless bugs and rodents that don’t go south for the winter. While many of the tenets of the Colorado Master Gardener training still remain true, I feel a need to update my skills for California with a refresher course. In particular, I want to understand the mind of the vole and learn how to dissuade this creature from tunneling in my lettuce bed. Each Master Gardener Program tailors its program to the needs of its community—which is a tremendous service to all. The University of California system is home to 64 Cooperative Extension offices, which are really de facto local problem-solving centers. With more than 400 specialists at University Extensions, and with farm, home, and youth advisors all over the state, the Extension program has a wide reach, which includes 4-H youth development programs along with Master Gardener, Master Food Preserver, and Master Food Shopper education. From Alameda to Yuba, Master Gardener programs and experts are available. Hand-in-hand with this sensible approach to ethical and sustainable gardening is a whole lot of fun. Interested in Becoming a Master Gardener? Who becomes a Master Gardener: Master Gardeners share a number of qualities – they are enthusiastic, willing to learn and help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups. Experience and a background in gardening are also important. Every effort is made to accommodate everyone who applies; however training classes are limited, and all applicants may not be selected. Training: Classes are taught by Cooperative Extension Advisors and other horticulture specialists. Classes include: introduction to horticulture; soil and plant nutrition; pests and diseases and their control; plant management; and diagnosis of plant problems. Training takes place over several months (mid-February through mid-June) and is adapted to local needs and environment. Certification: Certified Master Gardeners have participated in the training program, passed an exam, and completed their volunteer hours. After completing the classes, the Master Gardener volunteers 50 hours and commits to 12 hours additional educational credits in the following year. Certified Master Gardeners maintain their status with 25 hours of volunteer service and 12 hours of educational credits annually. Ongoing educational programs are offered to help Master Gardeners fulfill their required educational credits. What Master Gardeners do: Under the supervision of the UCCE Horticulture Advisor, the UC Master Gardeners of Santa Barbara County serve the community through their telephone helpline, newspaper articles, demonstration projects at local gardens, schools, information booths at Farmers Markets, and various other community projects. Master Gardeners must follow the recommendations of the University of California Cooperative Extension. How I Healed from Bipolar Disorder, Thyroid Disease & Became a Healer 13 Years ago, I was being treated for Bipolar Disorder and Thyroid Disease, taking 5 medica�ons a day. I kept hearing that I was here to help people heal their lives. Hearing this over and over for months, ﬁnally I said, “God, if you want me to be a healer, show me the White Light.” A friend of mine was taking photos of me. EDITORS NOTE: For the past three decades, Kathryn Hall has spent most of her mornings in her garden — a love, habit, and passion that she has channeled into a multitude of resources such as her successful gardening blog, plantwhateverbringsyoujoy.com. Her latest offering comes to us garden lovers in the form of a book; Plant Whatever Brings You Joy which encapsulates Hall’s “blessed wisdom from the garden” — culling over twenty years of horticultural experience into 52 life lessons. Each lesson is brought to life with meaningful and touching observances of the author’s own time in, and out of, the garden. The Whole Person is pleased to share two of our favorite chapters.

REMEMBER THAT ALL SEEDS HAVE THEIR OWN RATE OF RETURN The earliest seeds of Plant Whatever Brings You Joy emerged shortly after my daughter left home for college and I moved north to Mendocino where I almost immediately started working on a garden. It was the first time in a long time I had lived alone, and I found I landed in the woods with an insatiable passion for experimenting with all kinds of new plants. It was there I discovered the delicate columbine, the beauty of blue canterbury bells, the joys of growing pink, lavender and white cosmos, and the thrill of scented honeysuckle. Early mornings found me already out among my plants, like as not still in a bathrobe and slippers, anxiously seeing what new thing had emerged or changed from the day before. There was always something. In this morning ritual I began seeing the obvious connection between what I was learning in the garden and how that same lesson held true in other areas of my life, and I began to take mental notes. Later I was inspired enough to purchase a bound journal where I began writing down what I was noticing. Thus the inception of this book. I had the luxury of taking years, actually, of making these observtions and at some point I began to very tentatively share some of these ideas with close friends. Consistently faces lit up and people nodded and smiled and I began to blow hope and faith into sharing my vision. Evolution of the project turned up in unexpected places. I took a workshop with a woman who described the phenomenon of “parallel jobs.” She described musicians whose souls were longing for

expression who had jobs as DJ’s or set designers who longed to act. This struck a cord, and I began to wonder if perhaps I was carrying some of this parallel longing in my life as a publicist. This was a job I believed in and loved, but it was also true that all the while “my book” was in the shadows. I began to publish articles. Tiny tendrils were emerging from the earth. Then a wonderful opportunity came at a seemingly strange time. Just at the time in my personal life my grandmother was catapulting towards heaven, I was in my business life conversing in cyberspace with a colleague in London who was taking a kind of survey about business travel. I emailed back that while I didn’t necessarily do a lot of business travel, I had actually begun a second book, on that very subject. You can imagine my surprise and delight when this editor wrote back to me and asked how much material I had! Next thing I knew I had been hired to write about all the ways in which one might stay healthy while on the road, a subject I loved writing about and could readily contribute to. This was my official launch into being published in a book, a lofty start, indeed, as the publisher was a well-known British firm. My inner flower grew. Life had taken me to many new gardens over this period of time and while I cherished “my gardening book” still it seemed to be in somewhat of a dormant period. An old close friend would remind me now and then, saying she hoped I would continue with this dream, and once she sent me a birthday card she herself had designed. On the cover she had drawn a lovely gold tree with deep and abundant roots with a large

chestnut lying below the tree and a myriad of twinkling stars in the sky. Underneath she had written an Ani DiFranco quote, “I will not be afraid to let my talent shine!” Inside she wrote, “Happy Birthday, Kathryn! In the year of the risk.” I don’t know what risks I took that year, but it wasn’t this book. Still slumbering under that gold tree inside the chestnut, undoubtedly. Then there was stirring in the roots of my book tree. One Christmas my darling daughter happened to send me a gardening journal for Christmas. On the cover was a bunny holding a rake and hoe. I knew she was thinking of my book and my love for that project when she chose it and I was touched at her loving thoughtfulness. I thanked her and told her I was going to dedicate the journal to seeing me through on my book. There are only two entries in the journal. The first states the purpose of the journal and an affirmation for what I saw for my book, written in the present tense, as if it were already happening. The second entry was written after I returned from a conference in New Mexico where I heard the presentation of an author who revealed to the audience that her book had actually sat in her desk drawer for ten years. I felt the goosebumps on my skin as I listened. I returned to home charged up, determined and committed. The old Goethe quote had long been taped to the top of my telephone when I first began my book publicity business: “ Whatever you can do Or think you can Begin it Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” I began to act from that place. Clearly the tree had sprouted from its long incubation. The plant had taken root. I began my blog and over time found a worldwide readership, for which I am incredibly grateful. And now. A book. Within each big dream are many many seeds and stages of growth. Some seeds fall on barren ground. Some are caught in a sudden breeze of inspiration and grace, falling back to solid ground and everything that is needed to bring it to lovely fruition. What seeds lie within you that long for all the right ingredients to bloom to glory?

PLANT WHATEVER BRINGS YOU JOY I had thought I would never live in a city again, having put in time in both San Francisco and Mexico City, but Amsterdam proved to be the exception. It was quite safe, clean, interesting, and charming. Still, after two years passed, I began to grow restless with being in an urban environment. Short trips to the small charming town of Marken broke up the tension of city living, but it was not enough. In my neighborhood the building of flats across the street had been torn down, leaving a gaping hole as my view. Small trees had been planted at the edge of the broad sidewalks, but we were, when it came down to it, surrounded by cement. My restlessness with the situation grew to agitation. Coupled with the fact we were in an urban environment was the undeniable fact that we were still, after two years, outsiders. By now Antonia spoke fluent Dutch, but she remained somewhat isolated. Her mother was a foreigner. Our neighbors consisted of born-and-bred Dutchmen and a small number of Turkish families (also tagged as forever being foreigners in the eyes

of the locals). We were the Americans. One afternoon I looked out at the brick and concrete landscape, nearly exasperated, and I suddenly heard a voice in me say, “If you don’t like it, change it. But don’t complain about it anymore.” I was startled to hear this voice, but I recognized instantly that it was the truth of the situation. I went downstairs and examined the sidewalk. Dutch sidewalks are made of very very large (but not deep) cement blocks manufactured elsewhere and then laid down on sand. What I discovered by poking around is that while they are very heavy, they could be removed. A liberating realization! Standing and staring at the broad sidewalk reaching from the wall of our building to the curb, I suddenly envisioned how convenient it would be to remove the blocks just adjacent to the wall. And, once removed, the exposed earth would create a perfect sized garden plot! Interesting! I advised my landlord, who lived downstairs, what I intended to do. No protest from him. I enlisted the help of a couple of male friends, and they were able to pry up four of the large cement blocks in front of our building and move them to the area behind our flat (just in case the City Fathers ever wanted them put back). I dug up the sand underneath to a depth of about two feet. Perfect. Antonia and I filled up the hole I had made with fresh earth. I began to purchase flowering plants and gradually filled the earthen area with their living beauty. And a strange thing happened. Strangers began appearing at the door of my flat. Strangers who had previously shied away from us “foreigners.” Some brought plants. And some shoved money into my hands! I was dumbfounded, amazed and delighted! Children showed up to help set the plants in the ground. Soon we had our garden! We had made a difference in our neighborhood. Everyone could see and enjoy the beauty. It made my heart burst with joy. The momentum from that single action was so unexpected. One evening an elderly woman came to the door and told me she lived down the street and that her husband was an invalid who sat inside all day. Watching out the window was one of his main activities. She asked humbly if we would consider coming down to their flat and planting another garden, which we did. This simple act of the willingness to go against the grain, to step outside the box, to challenge the way things had always been done proved to be a deeply transformational experience for both me and my daughter, and the heartstrings that surrounded this vision and action extended into the hearts and minds and eyes of a neighborhood. Recommends David Richo: A Man of Peace and Love David Richo, Ph.D., M.F.T., is a psychotherapist, teacher, workshop leader, and writer who works in Santa Barbara and San Francisco. He combines Jungian, transpersonal, and mythic perspectives in his work exploring conscious evolution and spiritual growth. A generous teacher and community leader, Richo teaches in Santa Barbara at City College Adult Education. For the past ten years he has taught a free ongoing class, offered during both spring and summer, called Reading and Writing Poetry for Personal Growth. The text for the class is his own Being True To Life: Poetic Paths To Personal Growth (Shambala, 2009). His book, Daring to Trust (Shambala, 2010), offers key insights and practical exercises for exploring and addressing trust issues. In his latest book, How to Be an Adult in Faith and Spirituality (Paulist Press, 2011), Richo writes, “this book is written for the average person and is not biased for or against any religious tradition. It can be of assistance to us in designing an expansive and adult spiritual path.
