My Soul Is In Tact Toni Barca was literally a child of the planet. She was born in Paris, and lived in Rome, London, Africa, and Hong Kong and finally the United States. Her family traversed the world due to her father’s business which called upon him to travel constantly. “I felt like my father hoisted me on top of his shoulders and showed me the world. I saw all the beauty and all the sadness the world carried.” Her father grew up during the depression and WWII due to which Toni readily admires that, “He had a great capacity for empathy for others. Drawing a World Where Those with Cancer are Understood and Loved, Body & Soul

hen artist Toni Barca started drawing as a young child, infatuated with female figures, especially Amazons, she could not have fathomed the path her journey would have taken as an artist. Never afflicted with breast cancer herself, yet through her empathy for those who have, she was inspired to create a series of touching and impactful etchings. These hopeful intimate portraits are of our fellow journeyers in this transitional time in their life. Each one a sensitive and moving testament capturing the fully intact soul whilst the physical body no longer is, and all that comes with that including the inner solitude and struggle often endured as well as the power and unwavering essence.

and shut down or can open up the heart. His heart was open to other people’s plight. It was a great lesson through which I learned to have compassion for others and life’s struggles.” Thanks to her exposure to many different cultures and customs at a young age, and her father’s example of caring and empathy, she grew into an open-minded woman, relating and understanding to many different situations and people. One experience that impacted her quite deeply was when she was around 10 years old she happened to overhear a conversation

between her mother and a neighbor. This chance eavesdropping on an adult discussion would alter the path of her artwork years later, and steer her own empathetic feelings towards women and what they sometimes have to withstand. Her mother’s conversation was about a beautiful model who underwent a double mastectomy that ruined her career, and then was profoundly deserted by her boyfriend. This relatively innocent retelling of one woman’s hardship had a deep influence on young Toni. “The message I got was, so if you’re not perfect, your man will leave you?” Are you not a

whole person, a complete woman, a beautiful woman without your breasts? It made me think, this is not right. Who says you’re not whole if one or both breasts are gone? Who makes up these rules?”

Most little girls play with Barbie, and so grow up seeing that image as the beautiful female figure. Yet, Toni was drawing female figures with one breast at a very early age. As Ms. Barca shared her fascinating story, I could not help but wonder if maybe she had a past-life as one of these Amazons, or some form of spiritual link to them, so I asked this of her. She replied “I believe in past-lives, yes, I’ve thought of this myself. It’s very possible.” The image of a warrior, a survivor, a strong and powerful woman was something she was meant to impart in each and every image that she creates. Her childhood preoccupation with the Amazons was not an accident, or a coincidence. She had a mission, a lifepath to share this female warrior energy to current day cancer patients, who many times are looked upon in our society as victims. She is the voice to herald these woman (and men) who have been afflicted with breast cancer as champions, not tragic prey. So what Ms. Barca understood at an early age, is what she was destined to share through her artwork.

Around the same time, Toni became preoccupied with female figures of varied cultures, especially the female Greek Amazon warriors. As a child she would consistently choose these as her subject matter in her drawings. She knew of the story of the Amazons who were known for cutting off one of their breasts in order to be more proficient with their bow and arrow so they could better go into battle. These Amazon women were not meek or weak, but powerful female figures, ready to sacrifice themselves to be strong and self-supporting.

These etchings arouse healing compassion for others while at the same time breeds it for the self for the struggles we each go through.

Buddha Power

To say the least, these Amazon women with one breast were not the typical fertility goddess, they were the alternate image of a highly evolved spiritual warrior, going into battle, filled with valor and power. Just like the Amazons, her subjects go into battle, but in these cases against the cancer, society’s stigma, and their own inner idea of their new selves. It’s a wonderful allegory and visual for people battling an illness, for hope and triumph over their oppressor, whatever or whomever that may be. “I think writers, and some visual artists have to step into other people’s shoes in order to create the kind of art that speaks to others. So in a sense, it wasn’t such a stretch to sit sketching Continued on Page 8

Amazons and to realize that to be a breast cancer survivor transformed a woman into a warrior, an Amazon.” Though her images are clearly powerful as well as sensitive, early on in the process of getting her work out to the public, it was hard to find a home where they were accepted and revered for what they were saying. Initially after the images were created, friends urged her to submit her work to breast cancer support groups and agencies, but originally there was silence from that community. She put the work aside for 6 years, “I realized that our society was neither ready nor comfortable with the dialogue of breast cancer and intimacy.” But over the years, the reaction to her images has softened, and the time has come where her themed images of compassion, love, empowerment and transformation have become accepted and treated as an important step in the cancer dialogue. In May of this year she was invited to the influential 20th

Annual California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) Symposium sponsored by University of California to share not only her work, but also her thoughts, feelings and ideas on how her images could assist in the healing conversation of cancer patients. Prominent people in the world of breast cancer are taking notice and finally realizing the power of these images in the recovery process, as well as sharing and telling the story of these amazing paths of people through an illness, who may not be physically whole, but are spiritually stronger and more empowered. This is the message she evokes with her etchings, to everyone who views her artwork, not just those with or who’ve had cancer. The process of creating the series touched upon many deep-felt emotions for her; “it was heartbreaking, fulfilling and ultimately enlightening. I think that art has been the conduit to a multilingual dialogue about the mind body healing

paradigm.” Going through the journey of losing a breast, or losing anything with attachment to identity for that matter, indeed offers the opportunity to grow and become a spiritual warrior; stronger and more victorious than otherwise imaginable. So her images are a metaphor for any of life’s losses, poignant documents for the human experience that can influence and reach so many, crossing borders and languages. Without words, she invokes compassion into her images and elicits the same from the viewer. In many of her works she shows the scars from a breast removal on her subjects, and with it exhibits the empathy for yourself that you must have first when life is a struggle, as well as the love and understanding needed from friends, lovers and even strangers. It’s a patchwork of sensitivity and tenderness that will make the journey for the sufferer tolerable and ultimately successful. Continued on Page 11

The artwork reaches out to the audience and says, “Do you understand what I’m going through? Are you with me? Or will you look away in denial? Or maybe even repulsion?” Her work is both thought provoking and to some, provocative. Unlike in Europe, in our society (as well as the media), we are not used to viewing nudes without there being an overtly sexual context attached. However, these nudes are not about sex, rather about bonding, connection, and tenderness; while they may be harder to look at due to the deep attachment to oneself and the relationship with their partner that the images portray. The work has been deemed an important visual representation of deep personal relationships and worthy of further study and examination. In 2006, ten of her visual works were accepted by The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction (Indiana University), these pieces are now part of their permanent collection.

The images are both “salacious” and innocent. “Some think of my work as pornographic. They are confusing nudity with sex. It’s not the same thing.” The images are reminiscent of Sumerian and ancient Hindu deities, expressed from a contemporary approach. The innocent sexual references are shown in a concise graphic illustration that are clean and succinct, which allows the theme of empathy, love and empowerment to permeate her work. The sketches are line drawings cut into linoleum blocks, and then printed. The art is done very simply, purely, with an almost childlike quality. The subconscious decision by Ms. Barca to approach her images in this manner makes the serious subject matter much more palpable and easy to comprehend. Her pieces exhibit nudity, suffering, and in some cases sexual intimacy, yet with an innocence that penetrates all of her art. The gritty details of the nude images are left out,

so the deep emotions of the subject matter can shine through. She has managed to create spiritual and emotional stirring pieces in a two-world plane, using a clear and uncomplicated depiction of their struggle using thin lines, very little color, mostly black and white frameworks to tell the stories of these women grappling with life’s trials. What’s left is the emotion of the story. You’re not bogged down by specific elements that will take you away from their personal saga. Her work is similar to ancient pictograms in style, which ironically she is incorporating into a new book about breast cancer survivors. She will be employing pictograms from the Harappan Culture, and the ancient Greek fragments from Sappho into her work, undeciphered languages of symbols and images. A Lesson inspired by the Tour de France

One article contained a bit of advice that I especially treasured. It was an interview of Mike Walden, a legendary coach who trained many national champions and Olympians. Something he said conveyed a universal truth, which I appreciate even more today for its profound wisdom. Mike had a rule: “If you say you’re going to ride ‘x’ number of miles, then you must ride that number of miles. If you’re not feeling well or don’t have the time, then commit to riding less miles; but whatever the number of miles you commit to, you must finish.” His logic was simple. You are developing habits when you train. You want to develop the habit of perseverance, not quitting. But beyond developing good habits, his “rule” contains some sage advice. In short, he is saying, “Always do what you say you’re going to do.” (Or as Don Miguel Ruiz stated in his bestseller, The Four Agreements, “Be impeccable with your word.”)

What’s profound about this? Your every word, your every thought, your every utterance is a commandment to the universe. The universe is conspiring to make every one of your pronouncements come true. Why would you ever want to turn yourself into a “liar” by not following through on your pronouncement?

This can be devastating to your business career, as after all, your reputation is built on your ability to keep commitments. But it can have equally bad consequences at home. For example, say you tell your young son that you’ll read him a bedtime story; but then you get engrossed in some movie or ballgame on TV and put him off. You have just announced that your words mean nothing – to both your son and the universe.

Beware the ego Whether it’s greed, pride, the desire to be liked or some other “ego-driven” reason, you may be tempted to “inflate your importance” by promising something you can’t deliver. Yes, this is the ego in action. You might have every intention of delivering it when you make your commitment, but then you realize it might be time-consuming, costly, or inconvenient, so you drop it. Worse, when confronted, you may try to justify your position, by reframing your original promise: “I didn’t really mean it,” or “I meant that only if such and such happened,” or you blame some third party. As a long-term mystic once

YOU SAY advised me, “Never let your mind act as an attorney for your ego.” If you make a commitment, you must follow through. And don’t wait until those who “owe” you follow through on their commitments. You don’t want to slow down your own progress, while you wait for others to “catch up”.

Act now, not later I have a friend who complains that people she relies upon do not follow through on their commitments. In a conversation, I pointed out that she didn’t follow through on some of her commitments. I asked her, “How can you expect people to follow through on their commitments, when you don’t follow through on yours?” She “explained” that she will start following through when they do. I told her she is giving them way too much power. “Why would you knowingly put your life on hold, and place that kind of power in the hands of such irresponsible people?” Every time you say you’re going to do something and don’t do it, you’re announcing to the universe that honoring your commitments is not important.

This is not a habit you want to cultivate. What happens when there’s something you really want to manifest? If you’ve already built up a track record of making announcements that never come to pass because you’ve been out of integrity with your words and actions, then, when you want to manifest something important, it’s going to be more difficult. After all, based on your past performance, you have little reason to believe anything will happen, so how likely is it to manifest? This is not to say that you should “play it safe” and never aim for goals that are slightly “out of reach” so as to avoid failure from not following through. You owe it to yourself to strive for greatness by expressing your true inner essence. What it means is that if you DO commit to something, you do everything in your power to attain it. And if you fail, you get up and try again. The lives of all winners are littered with temporary setbacks and failures. And every one of these successful men and women started with the principle of doing what you say you’re going to do.

Integrity and enlightenment For reasons beyond just increasing your chances of success, doing what you say you’re going to do should be a way of life. Your objective is to have your thoughts, words and deeds in perfect synchrony; that is, you don’t lie – you act with integrity. But, this means more than just being honest and moral. Integrity also means being whole and undivided. It’s a step toward merging with the Oneness, which represents our ultimate goal – enlightenment.

Conclusion Whether your goal is to be the best bike racer, teacher, parent or business person you can be, or whether it’s to attain our ultimate goal of enlightenment, start by doing what you say you’re going to do. ach moment of the day, nanosecond after nanosecond, we are co-creating a reality from which we are either conscious or unconscious. To the degree we are conscious, lovingly paying attention to the moment, our co-creativity tends to reflect a flow of ease and grace in our experiences. To the degree we are unconscious, we reactively and retrospectively discover the fearful hand that has scripted the dramatic sequences of our existence. Curiously, we wonder how it is that certain people, places and circumstances show up in our lives. Some of these experiences show up and bring peace and joy into our lives. Others experiences seem to bring sadness and anger. For the most part, these experiences appear as a random series of events over which we seem to have little or no control. As a result, we feel either lucky or like a victim. Various religious and spiritual texts have for eons pointed toward the reality of how we each can and do co-create our realities. Often, even the most current and evolved of teachers and new thought leaders miss a most critical part in the co-creativity equation... that of how thought, and more impor-

tantly, our spoken word, calls into form the reality of our envisioning. In order to understand the power of the spoken word, let us ref lect: “In the beginning was the word” (the “word” translates into “primary harmony” according to John the Evangelist of the first century A.D.), “and the word was with God”, says John 1:1. “Then God said, Let there be light”, says Genesis 1:3. Buddhists call the primary harmony “OM”. Specifically, the ultimate point to bring awareness to is that every word is made of letters and every letter has its own specific phonetic

sound based on whether it is a consonant or a vowel. Therefore, when we combine various letters into words and speak these words, it is analogous to striking several keys on an instrument to form combinations of notes. When such notes combine, they unite into a vibrational musical cord or unified sound. Make sense? Certain words, by their very definition, have high intension vibrations while others lower. As we bring deeper awareness into our lives, consciousness tends to transition from a passive state of hearing into an active, participatory level of listening and paying atten-

With this new awareness, we suddenly find it paradoxically curious when a friend responds to an invitation to participate in something we thought they would value, by saying “No, I would love to do that”, or “No, that’s a great idea”. Similarly, we begin to feel a drain around a reactive proclaimed goal of “I need to create more money”, or “I should have a better job or career”, or “I have to”, or “I must do... (whatever the subject might be)”. Occasionally, we feel a sense of joyful empowerment around the excitement of proclaiming “I will create more money”, or “I choose to create a better job or career,” or “I want to,” or “I desire to... (whatever the subject might be)”. What’s the difference? For a moment let us consider the word “need”. When you think of the word “need”, does it feel closer to the definition of abundance or lack? If as most, you conclude that it feels closer to lack, then let us ask next: If the word “need” is closer to lack, does this word feel closer to the definition of love, or fear? If you conclude fear, as do most, then let us ask does the word “fear” feel closer to response or reaction? If again like most, you will conclude that the word “fear” feels closer to reaction. This process of logical deduction and the granulation of words’ core definitions ultimately empower the understand-

ing that anytime we or someone speaks the word “need” (should, have to, or must) within the context of a core creative command, then we are commanding into form the future possibility from an intent of fear, lack, and/or reactiveness. This paradox becomes frustratingly apparent when we continue to ask for, or command, a more positive future through using these words that are defined by fear, lack and reaction. In essence, the carrot of our desire seems everout of reach, though we proclaim it more loudly and forcefully.

tion. As a result, we become more sensitive to how things feel, such as our own thoughts. We pay attention to the words we select to communicate, how they impact people, and we listen to how the communication of other people affects us.

Now for a moment, let us consider four new command words such as: I will, I choose, I want, or I desire. When you think of using these words to call forth a future possibility, do they feel closer to abundance and empowerment, or lack? If closer to abundance and empowerment, do they feel closer to love or fear? If closer to love, then do they feel closer to response or reactiveness? Choosing command words that reflect the authority of an intent of

self-empowerment, reflects conscious awareness and co-creativity. Choosing command words that are based in fear and lack reflect an unconscious choosing from what someone ultimately does not want to create. It is like the hero who wants to leave the village in pursuit of his or her dream, and yet fails to find the courage to take the first step because of the fear of the unknown. Choosing command words that proclaim self-empowerment and authentic choices reflects the wise intent of creating from the end goal of what one actually does want to create. Ultimately, this clear volition is liken to the hero who leaves the village in pursuit of their dream and as they cross the bridge of no return, they courageously turn to it and burn it to the ground, so there is no form of retreat to the past. Their singular commitment is to create from the clarity of what they really do want to create. There is only a looking toward and forward to the future. Humanity appears to be at a pivotal time where we are transitioning from the “persona” – which in Latin means to “pump air through one’s mask”, into becoming the “heretic” – which in Latin means “one who knows that they can choose”. If we listen carefully to our truest inner selves and speak with a greater presence, we can empower ourselves to create exciting new possibilities and become a witness to the reality of our heart’s greatest desire come true. n Sunday, September 1st, for the fifth year, hundreds of people from many different spiritual traditions and paths will be hiking the beautiful and holy Mount Baldy in the San Gabriel Mountains to take part in this spiritual pilgrimage dedicated to World Peace. It is an opportunity to come together in an open space and pray together for peace. There is nothing new about making a pilgrimage. Indeed, people from almost every faith hold specific sites as sacred and have been visiting them for hundreds and even thousands of years. Traditionally however, pilgrims have only visited sites sacred to their own religion: Hindus bathe in the Ganges, Muslims trek to Mecca, Jews visit Jerusalem to pray at the Wailing Wall and Christians travel to the ancient cathedrals in Europe and the Holy land. Rarely do we combine our forces, especially upon a mountain in the heart of nature beneath the great blue dome of sky that embraces us all. This is what makes the interfaith Mount Baldy World Peace Pilgrimage so unique, powerful, and uplifting.

Located about 50 miles east of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Mountains, Mount Baldy has been considered holy by the local Tungva/San Gabrieleno Native Americans for generations. And for the last 54 years, members of The Aetherius Society (a spiritual group in Hollywood and the organizers of this event) have been trekking up its slopes in the belief that Mount Baldy is one of nineteen mountains around the world containing uplifting spiritual energy for humanity to access at this pivotal time of global transformation. With so many people being alerted to the rapid changes which are dramatically sweeping across our world and impacting all our lives, it is no surprise that so many interfaith groups and spiritual organizations have joined this event in a universal calling for world peace and a blessing to Mother Earth. Almost all pilgrims take the 20-minute skilift from the parking lot at the end of Mount Baldy road to the lodge at about 7,600 feet (Note: There is no charge to take part in the pilgrimage except the cost of the ski-lift = approx. $15). The more youthful and sprightly then hike to a particularly potent spot on the mountain at 9,500 feet for a ceremony of prayer, chant, music and contemplation. This location can be tough going in places and is not recommended for older pilgrims or those who either have health issues or are not in reasonable physical shape. Instead, they are advised to attend one of two other sites lower down the mountain where ceremonies are also held thus allowing people of all ages and hiking ability to participate. The first of these locations is a shaded area just a short walk from the lodge, while the second location is a 40-minute hike from the top of the skilift to another shaded area at about 8,600 feet. At all three locations beautiful vistas stretch in all directions! At each location a ceremony is held with pilgrims from a variety of faiths leading the service. It is a wonderfully interactive experience allowing for mystical participation, fellowship and the uplifting feeling that comes from being in the heart of nature for a spiritual cause. It also enables pilgrims to spend time connecting with their inner selves with renewed clarity in the

true meaning of spiritual pilgrimage. All in all, it is a selfless task performed for the upliftment of mankind leaving everyone as they wind their way back down the mountain, with a beautiful and joyous feeling of deep spiritual and personal accomplishment. hat does the title suggest for you? Spiritual Pornography. What does it draw to the surface in your mind’s eye, in your body or in your soul? What pictures does it conjure forth? Do each of your cells quiver and shake with a repressed pleasure, or with intense derision and contempt? Do these words side by side rattle your body and jostle your soul? And at the sound of the word por-nog-ra-phy does your heart contract? Does it recoil into a tiny space within your being? Does it sequester itself in a repository with thick steel doors more impenetrable than Fort Knox, or does it race recklessly in a direction where it is uncertain of its destination? Does the hearing of the word suck the wind from your sails, simultaneously stripping you of your mast, while it shreds the hoisted canvas of its potential energy to leave you without motion, without movement, frozen in a place where two forces push up against one another?

Maybe there is a numbness that seeps into your body to shelter you, which provides you with blinders so that you don’t see the hidden within. For some it is like an evening fog that rolls in over the undulating water at sunset and before you realize it, the sun has ceased to shine. Conceivably there is an apathy that falls over your being, a spiritual amnesia that drapes itself around you to bring you solace. Investigate what it is that pierces your body in this visceral way where you are left gasping, energy flowing from your essence; or where you are seemingly indifferent. Is it the judgments that come out of nowhere and race toward you at the speed of light? What does it mean to see body parts; to look at thighs and breasts, calves and buttocks, lips and eyes; to look at an erect or flaccid penis or a clitoris, a vagina of a woman engaged in intercourse? What does it mean to witness one body part

being swallowed by another? How do you interpret the reactions of your body parts? Does belief give them motion? What benchmark do you use to critique your desire, to cast your gaze upon the human anatomy, to look at the f lesh of another, of two or three? Is there something so alarming, so disturbing that we are driven into a state of conf lict, capable of taking up arms? Perhaps we’re moved to a state where we wave banners, gather signatures, where we allocate resources to pass new laws, to build larger prisons to incarcerate those who participate and violate our mores. Are we in a place of confusion, drenched with disparagement, laced with scorn? Does it push us into a state where we feel driven to call out the militia, the reservist, the mercenaries or the gorillas? Maybe there is a force so powerful it invites us to place our finger on the button to obliterate everything.

Is it feasible that we are all participants, sitting on the same spectrum, holding onto the edges, holding onto a means of satiating some disturbance percolating within? Is it another tool we have unconsciously fashioned to bring us closer to the authentic us? Is the degree of differences in play a vast field inviting us to explore? And is the intention of the exploration, about mining the unseen parts of each of us? Are we not all players, each a puzzle piece to bring about a completion and reflect the whole? It would be so easy to point our finger, to sight scripture, to bring out codebooks, to speak of ethics, of what is right and what is wrong. Are we not tempted to again stretch and polarize people? Are our minds searching for black and white? How evanescent are the moments we hold a perspective for it only to evaporate within our clenched hand. Judgment casts barriers around us as much as with those we judge. So the spiritual pornography of which I speak is that of non-judgment. Participate in it generously, lavishly, like a glutton. Lay it on thick, and imagine what ownership is waiting; whether we are the plaintiffs or the defendants, the prey or the preyed upon. Hard to fathom? As always, it comes down to choice; it is our choices that

Who is this voice which lays claim to any of the language we have speculated on? Who has given it power to place its hand upon the controls of our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies? Has the opinion of the consensus world stripped us of our ability to discern in our own individual way? Perhaps so!

serve us by holding us in place or by facilitating our growth. But choice is often blocked by our mind; we’re incapable of seeing eye to eye. Perhaps there is something we avoid by not looking. Isn’t there a common denominator weaving through us all? There is something powerful in delving into the release of judgment, the ones we’ve both carried and passed along the lineage as though they were gifts. There is something potent in observing, at imagining, exploring, discovering, envisioning every part of us. There is something utterly forceful in emancipating judgment, and only then may we truly bear witness to the dynamism of the spiritual ecology unfolding. We liberate ourselves, unshackle one another; we bring balance rather than extremes; we arouse clarity rather than confusion; we eradicate stagnation and propagate movement. When judgment free we lighten the burden, we dance gently or unreservedly, rhythmically as our bodies undulate and sway to the inner sounds, bringing us closer to every part of our physical, spiritual us. The times continue to beckon us to raise consciousness to that of nonjudgment, to where it is the norm, the common sense body-mind reaction (aligning with where it already is in spirit), even so far as it becoming a new instinct. For evolution’s sake, this will bring an end to all ill-will and allow humanity to love itself and one another, and end war, violence, abuse, the education and income gaps, starvation and poverty… once and for all. How Not to Be Run Over by it On the Road to Enlightenment

very other week it seems that the news is recounting another celebrity’s fall from grace. From a wife’s bashing of a car window with a golf club to the implosion of a Food Network’s icon billion dollar business, the financial stakes and drama are high. Reports of celebrity hubris and the schadenfreude of the media are elements of a karmic reality show played out on the TV of life. It is also a reminder that we are all subject to the laws of cause and effect . . . unless we choose to live differently. This doesn’t mean that we can avoid responsibility for our actions. We can however, bring our lives into balance before our choices narrow options to pain, suffering and destruction. The law of cause and effect provides a great opportunity for change. The wheel of karma allows these opportunities to come around and around again until we have the “aha moment” and desire to change. In my work as a medium, I’ve spoken with many spirits who have started or continued the cycles of physical abuse, addictions, hatred, distrust and fear here on earth. Over the years they’ve shown me four

steps we can take to get out of the way of the wheel of karma, before it runs us over.

Be Aware: Listen to what you say

about life in general and your life in particular. Pay attention to using words like “always” and “never” in describing experiences. For instance, during a session with a young woman, her father in spirit apologized for abandoning the family when she was two. He admitted that her current relationship difficulties were related to his choice. “Yeah,” the girl agreed. “Men always do a disappearing act. My boyfriend is never around.” Loved ones in spirit are quick to point out that the polarized way we view life is often the result of their teaching us that life is one way or another. The idea of “that’s just the way life is” can be accepted so early in life that it is difficult to consider that what we assume is truth, may not be – especially when personal experience supports our claims. The young woman’s father in spirit reminded her that her best friend Sarah, is happily married with a baby. In talking about Sarah, she had an “aha” moment. “Maybe all men aren’t all the same,” she said as she walked out the door.

Be Present:

One of the challenges I face when communicating with

spirits is ascertaining whether they are referring to past, present or future events and actions. The reason for this is that the spirits almost always provide information in the present tense. I.e., during a recent session, a husband in spirit who had died leaving behind a wife and young children, mentioned Hawaii, showed me a beach in my mind and gave me the sense that he was with his family on that same beach in Hawaii and that he felt at home on the Big Island. It turns out that the man had lived in Hawaii before he had gotten married (past), that his family had scattered his ashes on the beach in Hawaii (present because they were in Hawaii when the session had been scheduled) and that there were plans of returning to Hawaii regularly (future). The past, present and future existed entirely in the present for this loving husband and father. The fact that the spirits live in the present is helpful when thinking about change in our own lives. To make everlasting change, it is essential to work from exactly where we are. The past and future can only be affected by what we do in the present moment. For example, if you want to lose weight

Be Willing:

One of the greatest misconceptions we maintain about the spirits is that they are fixed in their ways and that change is impossible after death. This couldn’t be further from the truth. For instance, a father in spirit who had ostracized his son for being gay, made it clear during a session that he had changed his mind and admired his son for his strength and activism. If a relationship is full of conflict on earth, it can be difficult to accept this kind of change and offer to relate differently. In another example, during a session with a woman who resented her father’s actions, her father in spirit gave me the phrase, “I’m sorry that I wasn’t the father you needed me to be.” The woman gasped and asked, “Did he really say that or are you making it up?” She couldn’t conceive that her father might finally see himself clearly and acknowledge her needs (which he didn’t while on earth). In this case what solidified the unwillingness to accept changes in the relationship was that the woman had written a script based on the relationship with her father. During our session, her father acknowledged the script by providing the brand of alcohol his character drank and the pipe he smoked. Unfortunately, his daughter wasn’t willing to give up her version of their story to proceed with a new way of relating. (as I do), thoughts like, “I’ve always been overweight (past) and always will be (future),” don’t support change, rather resignation. Instead, in the present moment, I can ask myself questions like, “Am I really hungry?” When paying attention to things as they are right now, I’m no longer locked into a rote way of living and am free to question reality. I chose to live as the spirits live – in the present tense.

your life and the characters in it. For instance, in the story of my life, I have always been “stout” “plump” “hefty” like all the women in my family. Now I’m writing a new story, one in which I am willing to be “fit”, “active” and “healthy”. Daily I approach life with the phrase “I am willing to . . . “ For your purposes, just fill in the blank.

Be Grateful:

The spirits almost always express gratitude for the ways that we’ve honored and loved them while they were on earth and after their deaths. “Thank you for helping me keep my dignity,” a mother in spirit told the daughter who had bathed her day after day so that she wouldn’t be naked in front of a stranger. “Thank you for your friendship and encouragement” a group of children and teenagers in spirit told a young woman who was fighting the cancer from which many of them had died. Gratitude has been severely underrated. The spirits remind us to elevate it to its rightful (and helpful) place in creating everlasting change. Several years ago, I made a conscious effort to start each day with gratitude. When I am grateful for the food I’m eating, I find that I can’t be resentful that some people eat whatever they want. Gratitude has changed my life. When I think of those I love who are living in spirit, I am grateful for what each of them has brought to my life. In the midst of gratitude, I know that they are present and willing participants in change and that my gratitude invites their continued presence in my life.

eing taught since childhood to conform to certain standards has made us automatons rather than individuals. Parents and teachers, coaches, religious guides and anyone we’ve ever come into contact with have left an imprint on our subconscious mind. Deep down we have accepted the rules of society. We thought we were ‘good’ if we conformed to the mind-sets of others. This can create it so that habits and behaviors are hard to break. In order to change your perception of who you are to who you want to be, you must create a clear picture of your ideal self. Only then can you slowly (and let’s be open here to quickly) change your perception of yourself, hence your image and likeness. The truth is that we are naturally equipped to unfold from within and that all knowledge is already stored in this vast ocean of consciousness. We do not need the outside perceptions to show us the way. In fact, when we seek them as if we do, they lead to misery, illness, unhappiness – an inharmonious life. In society’s view, a ‘good’ little girl must grow up to be sweet, nurturing and loving. She must bare children, be

You think this sounds like the old days? Think again. It is a stereotype still practiced in many homes; while in some larger cities you can finally see a picture that is slowly changing. More shared responsibilities and a general acceptance of role reversal is taking the place of old and outgrown thought patterns. Maybe there is hope? Pesky demands of our society also include the race for a career and always having to be the best, have the most. This encourages competition and also may induce unneeded stress. The stresses of today’s world have promoted alcoholism and addiction of any kind in order to cope. Habits strengthen over time. Behaviors are the actions stemming from those gradually acquired habits. Repetition is the key. Breaking the cycle of a habit (or multiple) calls for repetition, repetition and repetition, to change the innermost convictions inspiring them. Your habits might be those of getting angry easily, yelling and using bad language; maybe you are getting nervous at the

Where and what you are in your life (believe it or not) is not due to outer circumstances, but it is solely the making of your own convictions. It is a complicated structure of accumulated impressions, teachings, mental habits, and most of all beliefs about your ‘self’, over a long period of time. So only you can create a new you; only you have the power to change.

Self-observe to know who and what you want to be through sincere soulsearching. Mirror please. Establish a new mind model of yourself through the help of the work you did above as you find out who you really want to be. Step into it. Stay focused and determined in changing your thought habits to a more positive outlook. Compassionately redirect as necessary. Trust that you can accomplish what you have set out to do and stay on course. Have some supports in place to help you in the slim chance this wavers. Love and treat yourself as the wonderful spiritual being you are. This can be tricky; if so, make a list of how. Then practice them diligently and really-truly connect to your love. It is always there. This may take time for some, start from the beginning if you get off track. Deter not when your old wires challenge whether you have truly embraced that you deserve the flip-side of your current unfulfilled experience. You have! his penchant for human beings to discover how unalike they are, how distinct they are, all has to do with ego. We have now managed to “create” how different we all are. And in that difference comes disharmony. There is no progress to be made by celebrating our differences. We’ve done that. Where we need to put the energy is in how similar we are, how much we all have that is similar that can be shared. How alike we all are, in terms of joy and pain and suffering and elation. And we need to share that information now. We are currently in a state of critical mass. We are so isolated, with our various distinct individualities, that we can wreak havoc on someone else and hope or think that we gain from it. We’re talking about terrorism, about hate crimes . . . anything of that ilk. That somehow if we are able to eliminate a reflection of ourselves, we are going to become more whole. It’s a very twisted viewpoint. So that’s what we need to recognize, that we are all, in an umbilical sense, connected to the same force -- like reconnecting strings. Because we’ve lost that connection, that understanding that each individual’s greatness is relied upon by the other person’s greatness, by recognizing their greatness, not their inability. What this simply comes down to is to recognize that every creature has greatness inherent in them. And the suffering of one is the suffering of all mankind. There is a way for everyone to be joyful and not to be dependent upon what we refer to as relative happiness. That happiness has to do with whether or not you have more or less than another individual in terms of material goods, attractiveness, or all those strata that

have been created. It’s a very destructive energy, relative happiness. The absolute happiness that comes from within, that’s eternal. It isn’t at the expense of everyone else. When people allow themselves to re-experience that, they recognize the joy that’s in all. In many people’s illusion, prosperity is what’s going to allow them to finance happiness somewhere. That’s what prosperity means to them. “Now I can be happy, because now I can buy the house that’s going to bring me happiness.” We know many lonely people with very big houses. Let’s instead talk about experiencing joy. We were put on this planet to ex-

perience joy. To understand the beauty, the depth, the excitement of the life experience. To thoroughly embody it, to become joyful in it, and by doing so, become compassionate with other people. The trouble is that we’re looking in the wrong places for what we think is joy, and we’ve bought into other concepts in which we think joy is experienced. Or we distrust the joy we’re experiencing as not being valid and not being of social worth. So the bottom line here is: joy is something that exists, can happen within you, and can be a part of the light in every second of your being if you choose to live that way. And when you experience it, everything else will be taken care of. You do not have to worry. Allow yourself to trust your life force rather than second-guessing it. Trust your intuition. It is a sum total of your entire existence. It is a vast library of information. We blind ourselves to it when we shut down our access to our library. It’s incorporating all of that existence, all that work, into this single moment in time. And breathing through it and allowing that funnel through to create the kind of force that will alter existence... that will change lives.

women, and men who have suffered from cancer. Like her focus, the pictograms are not quite understood or fully realized by society, just like the patients she represents in her book. Last year she got the urge to create a pillow book for breast cancer patients and their partners. “I researched the web and was shocked to see that not one pillow book was available to breast cancer survivors. I saw a million Kama Sutra books, tarot cards and so forth but nothing out there for breast cancer survivors and their lovers.” She knew that it needed to be done. But first she needed to show the work, so she contacted Sandy Taylor at the Tah gallery and she allowed her to show her work. Upon the heels of this first confirmation, she knew that she hadn’t finished, the pillow book had to be done. Hay House was so moved by her pillow book idea, they decided on the spot to fund it and gift her a grant to complete the book. “So this has been a process of love. I feel privileged and awed by the task of allowing myself to be guided, I trust the

process.” The pillow book, “Songs of Solomon: A Pillow Book for Breast Cancer Survivors and Their Lovers” will be out in October of this year on Amazon and Kindle. You don’t have to lose a breast to get the message, the lesson of growth or spiritual enlightenment. Even as a man or a woman never having any health issues whatsoever, you are touched by these etched portraits because they are about transformation, rising from the ashes, and accepting a redefining moment in one’s life. Everyone on the planet can relate to that. Ms. Barca’s images arouse healing compassion for others while at the same time breeds it for the self for the struggles we each go through. She is inviting the embrace of the deeper understanding that we are all one, not separate as we so often see ourselves. And though we all have an individual journey, each path contributes to the whole of humanity and the planet.

Her artwork, at its core, speaks about loving and caring for one another, and victory over life’s obstacles. It’s empowering to see a human, real, imagined, or implied, triumph and grow from pain and suffering. Through her series of etchings depicting cancer patients we can all learn and be inspired by that role model. Her subject matter may initially appear to be of cancer patients, and they undoubtedly are, but actually the subject is each and everyone of us. Her artwork tells a story of someone struggling as they go through a life-changing experience. As fellow humans, don’t we all have to go through at least one of these in our lifetime? Depending on our vantage point at the moment, we are either the subject who is yearning for wholeness, or the partner or viewer who elicits love and compassion to the struggling soul. With her sketches she enables us to step into either side of the equation due to her own empathic nature. In order for these images to exist, they first had to be created in the mind of the artist herself. These drawings are a peek into her feelings about people dealing with life’s trials and tribulations. They are a snapshot of Ms. Barca’s own compassion towards the cancer patients and ultimately the world at large. Compassion is something that can be taught, shared, and encouraged, and if these drawings touch you, even a little, then your heart, or your heart chakra to be specific, can open to be more loving, feeling and empathetic towards others and to yourself.
