The Power of Women

This month’s cover features the symbol of active feminine energy, the Green Tara. Considered a female Buddha, She represents the embodiment of compassion as She steps off Her lotus throne, representing the base of meditation and deep absorption to answer the cries of the world. Each December, The Whole Person focuses on peace and features people or organizations who are committed to making their community and their world a better place to live. In this issue, we highlight three exceptional examples of feminine energy, whose work takes them far and wide: internationally recognized yoga teacher and activist, Seane Corn’s nonprofit combines the spirituality of yoga with local and global activism; yogini and designer Uschi Gibson divides her time between the U.S. and her woman-empowering textile business in Varanasi; and Dr. Elizabeth Jackson, witnessing first-hand the dangers of conflict and war, has dedicated her life to conflict mediation and resolution. All of these women share a practice of yoga. Like Mother Tara, they excel at combining the energies of the heart with compassionate action and awareness — a combination desperately needed in our global village. As we watch the news unfold, as old structures fall and new ones struggle to be born, let’s honor the power of the feminine. This year, the 2011 Humanitarian Artists Award from Artists For A Better World went to John Aaron and Jerry Downs for their ongoing work with CHALK4PEACE. Aaron, the founder, and Downs, a photojournalist and board member, were recognized as CHALK4PEACE, which promotes world peace through chalk festivals, completed its sixth year worldwide. Their efforts were brought to the attention of Artists For A Better World through an article in The Whole Person Calendar; Jerry’s photo of a chalk-covered hand was featured on the cover of the December 2010 issue. Whole Person is happy to have played a part in contributing to the recognition of their ever-expanding initiative: notable locations new to the event this year include the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery, expansion into Poland and eight simultaneous events in and around Florence, Italy. ogini, activist, and co-founder of the global organization, Off the Mat, Into the World, Seane Corn is a force to be reckoned with. This October, she addressed an Occupy Wall Street crowd in New York. “I went there not knowing if ten people or a thousand would show up. It started with about 200 yogis, and by the time I left, there were at least

500 people there. It was very affirming that 200 people from the yoga community came out to lend support. In a 48-hour period, using social media, we were able to activate a viral phone tree.” Assisted by the “human microphone,” she reminded the attendees that just being there was doing yoga. At the end of her speech she transitioned into Tree Pose, a posture to increase balance, focus, strength, and steadfastness. For Seane, yoga is not something separate from the world or from political activism. Instead, as she demonstrated that day in the park, Yoga — which means union — is something we can do everyday in all

our interactions with others. It is action from the heart, based in compassionate wisdom with a profound recognition that all is connected and sacred. Whole Person had the honor to talk with Seane by phone at her home in Los Angeles, a rare opportunity as she travels most of the year. WP: What brought you to yoga initially and what was the inspiration for your activism? SC: I became an activist in New York working with different organizations, like gay rights and pro-choice, when I was very young. I had a lot of rage against injustice, so my way of processing was getting involved in rallies and, essentially, telling other people how to live their life. I

started doing yoga because I wasn’t being effective anymore as an activist. Prior to yoga, the only way I’d known to release that tension was through the yelling, chanting and cheering. I felt amazing afterward, but by next day I’d be angry again and couldn’t wait until the next rally — which wasn’t a sustainable practice. In the late 90’s, Seane decided it was time to give something back. “I’d started to teach privates and I was teaching my tail off, making more money then I ever had before.” She had a strong intuition about abundance: “When more is coming in, you have to spread it around or you stop the flow and I wasn’t interested in stopping the flow. Initially, it had little to do with altruism and everything to do with keeping that flow of abundance.” WP: That’s an okay motive, isn’t it? SC: When I think back on it, everything was divine and perfect in the way it all went down. I learned about an organization in Van Nuys from one of my clients, called Children of the Night,* and decided to volunteer. WP: I remember reading about this non-profit and being very impressed. SC: The work they do is amazing. They are the only organization in North America dealing with this particular population. They were so wonderful and supportive of the work I was doing at that time. WP: So you just walked in one day and said, “Hi, my name’s Seane and I’d really love to use yoga to help these young people.” SC: I did, but they didn’t immediately say yes. It turns out if you’re working with sexually abused children there are a lot of rules. When they finally did let me work with them, the kids were not impressed. They were rude, indifferent, aggressive, and mean. Afterward, she ran to her car. “I was so angry; toward the shelter and toward the system. I burst out crying and suddenly realized what happened. I’d just met 15 pieces of my own unhealed, unwanted self.”

Seane went back again. “Instead of trying to teach them something, I started to connect and to share. I started to see that what was under their anger was fear, and under that was grief. Just by being who they were, those children helped me understand that under my own anger was grief. I often say during that time in my life I didn’t give service to anybody. Those children served me and gave me back a part of my soul. In exchange, I taught them some yoga.”

WP: That seems to be the truth for many kinds of recovery work; it seems like it’s service to others that ultimately saves us. SC: It has brought me much joy and happiness. It’s a great privilege to do what I get to do, pretty much every day of my life. Her next step on this path was a program called YouthAIDS.* “They reached out to me and asked if I wanted to be their yoga ambassador. My job was to increase awareness in the yoga community about the global HIV/AIDS issue.” The first thing she did was make a t-shirt with the slogan Off the Mat and Into the World: “We sold them for $20. In a short amount of time, we sold $50,000 worth. I thought, maybe we’re on to something here.” In a year of fund-raising, and with the help of her musician friends, she raised $300,000 for YouthAIDS. It affirmed what Seane already believes: “It’s about community.” WP: You’re talking about the yoga community’s response. SC: Yes, because it’s a built-in audience. There’s a shared value system, people tend to be altruistic and educated, and make a decent living. I wanted to use my platform to harness this energy, to see if we could raise awareness and money and see if we could make a difference, both locally and globally. That’s how Off the Mat, Into the World was born. WP: You have co-founders as well. SC: Suzanne Sterling and Hala Khouri. We started trainings on how to use yoga to get more engaged and involved with service. But, there was this organizational element that I didn’t have time for. Then I (continued on page 38)

very morning, Uschi Gibson looks out of her open window to the great Ganges River — Maa Ganga. Living in India pretty much full time since 2008, she is still amazed and grateful at the lucky turns in her remarkable life. Lucky Uschi is the name of her company, which features hand-embroidered clothing and linens created by women in the rural areas of Sarai Mohana near the big city of Varanasi in Northern India. It’s evident that this red-haired yogini in a sari is very much aware of her own good fortune, and likewise opens her generous heart to others in less-fortunate circumstances. The project, Unit for Women’s Empowerment - KFI Rural Center Rajghat, offers literacy classes as well as health services for the women who come to the center to learn and perfect traditional handcrafted textiles and embroidery. The women are paid 300 percent more than the standard wage, which gives them as sense of purpose and pride in the work they do. “It’s very peaceful in the sewing room,” remarks Gibson. “Meditative.” Many of the village women have extensive family responsibilities in a centuries-old system that is often unkind, even cruel. A young bride must obey both her husband and her mother-in-law, and is expected to serve and honor both. Working at the center becomes a refuge for these women, a safe-haven where they can escape the rigors of a demanding home life and explore their own creative potential. The added status as wage earner — the women are paid by the piece — contributes to their growing sense of empowerment and worth. Gibson includes the sewers in the design process, asking for their input and creative expertise for the decorative embroidery on the tunics and home linens that are part of the Lucky Uschi line. Gibson was brought up to embrace diverse spiritual traditions from birth. Her

early years were spent traveling in Europe with her parents, eventually migrating west to Ojai, where she attended Oak Grove School. She embraced the teachings of philosopher J. Krishnamurti and the Theosophists, studied yoga, and became a certified yoga teacher. She was always curious about India, and keen to go there, but it wasn’t until 2007, when she was invited to travel as a chaperone with a group of teenage students, that she discovered the charms of Varanasi and a nearby fledgling women’s center that called out for leadership. Looking at the trajectory of Gibson’s life now, one can see how her career choices and education, her upbringing and community, brought her home to Varanasi and her heart’s work. After a seven-year stint working at Versace in retail in L.A., Gibson returned to Ojai and found a community that encouraged her to believe in her dreams at Lulu Bandha’s Yoga Studio. Gibson has taught yoga at the studio, and continues to help produce the annual Ojai International Yoga Crib with owner Kira Ryder. It was Ryder who helped Gibson organize a local benefit to send her off to India on her mission for women’s empowerment. Her first thought was that “someone really should take charge and organize the collective” — it had so much potential. It wasn’t until she was back in the States that it dawned on her that she was the woman for the job. Since launching the women’s project and Lucky Uschi, the line has expanded to include home linens as well as clothing. Lucky Lalita travel service is her latest venture, which grew naturally out of Gibson’s experience living in Varanasi and her immersion in Hindu culture. Gibson and her Indian friends arrange bookings and tours of India that give Westerners an experience that veers off of the usual tourist’s path. The itinerary includes airport pick-up at New

Delhi, a flight to Varanasi, a boat ride on the Ganges, darshan at temples in Varanasi, spiritual and cultural discourses, and visiting sacred sites. The tour also includes a visit the women’s project center, Unit for Women’s Empowerment. This year, for the Ojai International Yoga Crib, Gibson had her women’s collective create blank prayer flags similar to the Tibetan prayer flags one sees at spiritual centers and boutiques. “Our Shared Prayers” debuted at the Yoga Crib, and is now on its way to other women’s collectives and centers around the world. The flags were left blank so that participants could adorn them with their prayers and embellish the flags as they wish As Uschi says, “The international aspect is important to open networks and connect women with other women. We want to build a bridge between other cultures. There are precious layers of touch that go into each flag before it is passed onto the next person. This sense of touch imbues the spirit of the flag with something that goes beyond words.” Maybe it’s something like love. Love, with a little bit of luck. Give Peace a Chance

Dr. Elizabeth K. Jackson Helps to Resolve Conflict in Africa

fter the recent passing of Steve Jobs, his famous Stanford graduation speech was widely circulated. He spoke of his belief that when you look back on your life, you can see individual experiences, but when they are strung together, they lead to what becomes significant for you. In his words, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” Jobs’ words take on particular prevalence when viewed in the context of Dr. Elizabeth K. Jackson’s efforts toward world peace. Looking at her life, one can see that each step along a peaceful path adds up. Can just one person actually further world peace? Absolutely. Dr. Jackson can look back at her life-changing experiences to see how they have led her to become a trainer and mediator in International Conflict Resolution. She lived through the civil rights era as an African American woman. She wept bitter tears over the deaths of Jack Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Junior, and personally watched Watts burn down while the National Guard pointed bayonets at her

car. As a UCLA student, she witnessed the annihilation of the Black Panther party and the incarceration of her professor, Angela Davis. She has had exposure to many great men and women; her father insisted on taking her family to hear Martin Luther King Junior twice when they were children. She was close enough to touch Nelson Mandela when he invited the IFESH organization — which was part of the African and African American Summit in South Africa in 1997— to Pretoria for a dinner he hosted. In 2007, she went on the alumni cruise of Semester at Sea, where Desmond Bishop Tutu gave the speech of a lifetime. Then there was Angela Davis, Dr. Jackson’s UCLA professor. Though Ronald Reagan, governor at the time, abruptly took Davis out of Dr. Jackson’s life, their time together beforehand was enough to install Davis as a role model. Dr. Jackson also looked up to Maya Angelou, who went through a bruising childhood but ascended graciously, as well as Phyllis Pollack, a brilliant Los Angeles mediator whom she considers her primary mentor,

and Nadine Strossen, the former president of the ACLU. The ferocity of these figure’s light and positivity gave her hope beyond reason and inspired her to make a difference herself. As a Communications Professor at California State University, Bakersfield, Dr. Jackson knew that when she got tenure she would go to Africa on her sabbatical. At that time, she didn’t realize that her assignment with the volunteer organization International Foundation for Education and Self-Help (IFESH) would lead her to becoming a genuine player in bringing peace to the world. In Africa, she taught in Ethiopia,

Malawi, and Zimbabwe. She was in Ethiopia at the onset of the Ethiopian Eritrean war, which was sparked in 1997 by a border dispute. She was working with persons from Eritrea and Ethiopians at the time, yet overnight, two of her friends disappeared. Her best Ethiopian friend, Autenef Diamante, inadvertently drove through a makeshift checkpoint set up in Ethiopia, and was shot in the head by a border guard. In Zimbabwe, as a Fullbright Scholar in 2003-2004, Dr. Jackson witnessed the implosion of the country and the assault of its citizens — many of them her students — at the hand’s of President Robert Mugabe’s “Green Bombers.” These youth were trained to intimidate persons who did not support Mugabe’s Zanu PF party. They would resort to beating, bludgeoning, and, some say, killing to get their point across. Dr. Jackson had students who came to her bloodied by the Bombers. In exchange for her medicines and bandages, she asked permission to tape their stories. She will not be able to complete that documentary until the regime ends, as she fears that harm could come to her former students for having spoken their truths. In Malawi from 2010 through 2011, she observed the standoff between the Chancellor College faculty and the President of the country, Bingu Wa Mutharika. The faculty fought to regain their constitutionally guaranteed academic freedom. After one of the instructors was questioned about drawing parallels in his lecture between the newly dissolved governments of Egypt and Tunisia and that of Malawi, the Inspector General of Police (IG), whose immediate boss is Mutharika, roughly interrogated him. The faculty was both incensed and frightened. They demonstrated and enacted a work slowdown, demanding an apology from the IG and announcing that until spies were cleared from the college, they would no longer occupy the classroom. The students followed later with a march that supported the faculty, but were met with batons, bullets and teargas. Dorms were raided, students were dragged to jail, and two of them were held on treason charges. The closure lasted eight months, but not before the entire nation rallied against Mutharika in a showdown that claimed 20 lives on July 20, 2011.

During this time, Jackson was Co-Advisor for the Peace and Conflict Resolution Society. While the campus was closed, she and her students planned and hosted workshops on peace and conflict resolution in effort to make a significant impact on the people of and peace in Malawi. During her stint with Semester at Sea, Dr. Jackson visited China, Vietnam, Hiroshima and Cuba, all places in which the U.S. had been embroiled in conflicts that collectively lefts tens of thousands

Simultaneously, the Iraq war waged, and while students on the ship held a peace demonstration, she wept and thought “not again.” She began to think seriously about studying conflict mediation at California State University at Dominquez Hills. Dr. Jackson went on to earn her Post Master’s Certificate in Conflict Analysis and Resolution in the negotiating, conflict resolution and peace building program through the university. She sees her future to be completely entrenched in conflict resolution and peace-related discourse. She believes it is the culmination of all her experiences — the culmination of who she is. An individual can make a significant contribution toward peace. Dr. Jackson says, “Peace starts solely within oneself. It is impossible to help usher peace into a place unless the idea emanates from oneself — unless you work every day with that thought in mind.”

In this mindset, Dr. Jackson starts each day with meditation; she’s been a transcendental meditator since 1973, and started her yoga practice shortly thereafter. These have aided her through some of the most horrible and non-peaceful moments of her life. When she finds herself wanting to tear her hair out, or worse, wanting to tear someone else’s hair out, the impulse has always been successfully dampened by her deference to her spiritual practice. In her words: As you start with yourself, peace flows outward. It keeps you from purposely provoking others, from setting up situations in which you antagonize — after a while you may become keen in noticing conflict — but you are thwarted from aggressively reacting. Just think, if every person on the planet opted not to exercise the urge — there would be no assassination teams, no smart bombs, no gang wars, no bloody corpses blown to bits… Start with yourself — and do not support war. (Seane continued from page 5) met this woman, Julia Butterfly Hill, who’d tied herself to redwood trees in Northern California when they were clear-cutting. She was the first hard-core activist I heard speak who brought spirituality into activism. And that inspired me because I was a spiritualist who brought activism into the conversation. It gave me a lot of hope. Julia was involved with an organization called The Engagement Work.* “They reached out to me and said, ‘We see what you’re doing on the road, we think it’s amazing, we see the limitations, and we think we might have a “now what” for you.’” That was what Seane had been waiting for. SC: They became our umbrella, providing seed money and helping establish our initial trainings. We created a curriculum. The idea was those who took our training would go back to their community and invite eight to 12 friends to meet once a week for seven weeks, for up to three hours. At the end of the curriculum, the group would come up with a project that focused on local issues. Today, OTM has circles everywhere — including Europe and Japan. Leaders create their own projects; these have included yoga for 12steps/recovery, and yoga in the LGBT communities amongst others, supporting different needs that exist within the larger yoga community. According to Seane, each town or city ideally has a regional leader who can organize local projects. “If something national comes up, through the social media channels, we can reach out to these regional leaders and let them know about projects and how much money we need to raise. They have access to their communities in ways we don’t. We’re in the business of creating leaders. And, that’s we’ve done.” WP: Let’s switch gears for a moment. Tell me more about your involvement with Seva. SC: Sure. That’s one of our projects, the Global Seva Challenge. I had been spending time in India, working with YouthAIDS, visiting different organiza-

tions in some of the more impoverished areas. I started thinking; wouldn’t it be amazing to bring people out to these environments to let them see what’s going on in the world — not as a tourist, but as a traveler and a participator. If I had known then what I know now, I don’t know if I would have done it; it was a huge undertaking.

What we want in exchange is to spend a day or two with the project and the people and we want to be actively involved — digging ditches or painting, working with children, teaching yoga — whatever we can do. WP: During these trips, how much time do you spend doing yoga and processing with the group? SC: Well, we do yoga every morning. We go through our day, and in the evening, for at least a couple of hours, we’ll share and process. We’ve found when people are not dealing with their feelings and trauma is getting triggered, things will come up. People may start to over-eat for example, or call home and start fights. It’s all part of how it can play out. All of it empowers the participants to become better leaders. Sometimes they start their own 501(c)(3). Once people become empowered it’s like, move over; watch what I can do.

It’s a great privilege to do what I get to do, pretty much every day of my life.

WP: I can’t imagine what your schedule must look like. What’s it like when you’re home in LA? Do you teach? SC: It depends, because I’m on the road 250 days a year and I teach on the road.

They decided to focus on Cambodia. OTM partnered with and made a financial commitment to The Cambodian Children’s Fund. Then, they reached out to the yoga community. “We said, ‘If you can raise $20,000 in the course of one year through outreach and service-related projects in your community, you can come with us and see how your money is being spent. While you’re there, you will get additional training and learn processing skills.’” OTM raised over $500,000 for this project their first year. “The next year we raised $544,000. We went to Uganda and built a birthing center and a seven-room schoolhouse. The year after that, we went to South Africa. We raised about $550 ,000 and built a sustainable bakery, a library, and a halfway house. This year we’re focusing on Haiti.” SC: What’s effective about Off the Mat is that it’s self-sustaining. We don’t have to go to the government for grants and that means they cant dictate how we can or cannot spend our money. We’ve got relationships with different grassroots and national organizations that have long-term visions and a track record of success. We

Here, I teach once a week. I have an assistant, and when I’m here we focus on my career or on Off the Mat. OTM has a team of about nine people. There’s a lot happening behind the scenes. OTM also has local projects, such as their Empowered Youth initiative that works with marginalized inner-city youth and gangs. There are workshops that help ex gang members via the spoken word, using poetry and rap to process what’s going on in their lives. “We also bring yoga practices into juvenile hall — not just for the kids, but for the parole officers and the staff, to help them deal better with the stress.” OTM has taken people to Homeboy Industries downtown, run by Father Boyle, that only hires ex-gang members.* “It’s a restaurant where you can find rival gang members working side by side, baking your bread, or serving you at the table.” The program has facilities from therapy to tattoo removal in order to help people who are really committed to getting out of a gang. This is something we want to focus on eventually in other cities as well,

but LA is our backyard so we started here.” WP: If I was someone who wanted to get more deeply involved with one of your organizations, and with what you do, where should I start? SC: Go to OffTheMat.org to learn more about us. Next, take a five-day intensive. The emotional work is the biggest part of what Off The Mat’s about. If we’re going to work with marginalized or traumatized populations, it would be arrogant to imagine that our own stuff isn’t going to come up. It also depends on where you are in your life. If you’re raising three kids, coming with me to India might not be the most practical thing. WP: What else does Seane Corn or OTM have on their schedules this year? SC: There’s a lot of ways to get involved. Our next big project is something we’re calling Yoga Votes. We want to rally the yoga community around getting out there to vote to remind people that you take action by voting. With Yoga Votes, if we can also collect the data — this is the kind of thing that makes politicians pay attention. If they can see there’s a demographic here — the spirituality, yoga

community vote — they can see we’re not going to put our votes out there if our concerns are not being addressed. WP: Is there anything else you’d really like people to know, either about you or Off the Mat or anything else before we sign off? SC: I’d like them to know this is a collective effort. There are a lot of brilliant people who work hard behind the scenes to make this happen. The sustainability of the organization is reliant on consciousness and community. We’re looking for people in the yoga community to get involved, bring their brilliance to the table, and add to this collective vision. It’s way bigger than me personally, and way bigger then the nine people who run this organization. Recommends Krista Magidson, a meditation and spiritual counselor, has been teaching meditation for over ten years. The Southern California-based author has created two guided meditation CD’s: “Meditation and Visualization for Relaxation and Self-Healing,” and the newer “Meditation and Visualization for Relaxation and Inner Peace.” Mark Wilkinson had a chance to sit down and talk with Krista about inner peace, meditation and her latest work. Mark Wilkinson for WP: On your website, you write that you teach a unique blend of guided meditation, visualization, and mindfulness. Can you tell me how all of these elements work together? Krista Magidson: Guided meditation and visualization are easy ways to start or enhance a meditation practice because they take the pressure off of having to do it your self. You can just sit down, turn on your CD or MP3 player, and listen. Having a teacher guide me in my own practice when I first started meditating helped me a great deal. When I started, I was a very unhappy twenty-three-year-old and it was too painful for me to sit and be alone with my thoughts. Guided meditation with a teacher helped me to build a consistent practice and it was also very enjoyable. MW: On your new CD, I noticed that during the guided meditations there are periods where you are silent. This seems unusual for a guided meditation CD. What is the reason for this break with tradition? KM: Being still and being present are the hallmarks of any good meditation practice. What I have found in my own practice and in teaching all of these years is that at some point we do have to face our thoughts and feelings. With a consistent meditation practice, we learn how to go beyond our thoughts and feelings, delving deeper into the beautiful mystery within, the wellspring of all of our good. Stillness is an invaluable skill, one that requires practice and patience. Because I feel so

strongly about this, I worked in periods of quiet into the CD. MW: So, is stillness the point? KM: Well, learning how to be still is the beginning of true meditation. My goal as a meditation teacher is to teach people how to quiet themselves long enough to enjoy their practice. This is why we do a progressive relaxation at the beginning of every meditation on the CD; progressive relaxation stills the body and quiets the mind. MW: What do you mean by true meditation? KM: In our culture, there is a huge emphasis on the scientific benefits of meditation; that is, the benefits to your body and mind. In fact, most people start

to practice meditation for health reasons, myself included. The question is what happens beyond mere relaxation of the body and the mind? If meditation is reduced to an exercise in relaxation, then we are likely to miss the magic of meditation. Indeed, relaxation and stillness are only the beginning of meditation. MW: What do you mean? KM: Like I said, after relaxation the magic of meditation begins. So the process is relaxation, stillness, peace. MW: What is inner peace and how is it achieved? KM: Inner peace isn’t an accomplishment. Inner peace is already a state inside of each one of us, otherwise, how would we know to look for it? Relaxation and quiet allows us to have an experience of this indwelling peace. I sometimes imagine this peace as a golden light that seeps up through the pores in my skin and I radiate peace, I am peace. Peace isn’t given to us, peace is us. MW: People live busy lives, stress-related diseases are on the rise, is the realization of inner peace really possible in our fast-paced society? KM: There is no doubt that the demands of modern living make it seem like the realization of inner peace is impossible, but what we must do is remember that we carry our peace around with us. No matter what the circumstances of our life may be, peace is with us. The other key to the realization of peace is making your meditation practice a priority in your life. Some days you may only have time for a couple of deep breaths with your eyes closed. That’s okay. The point is that you have made the remembrance of inner peace a priority in that moment.
