BOOK REVIEW

THE DAY SANITY DIED

Author: Javier Castillo From the reader report by: François Michel Durazzo

This extraordinary story, many elements of which border on the unbelievable, is remarkably told, with suspense maintained throughout. A highly effective page-turner, the reader is keen to discover the conclusion to the story as it progresses chapter by short chapter, written in a clear and simple language. Efficiently phrased, it gets straight to the point, although still offers a certain number of descriptions and psychological analyses. Each chapter answers a question raised earlier and leaves another in its wake to be answered later, creating an expectation that encourages the curious reader to keep on reading. Indeed, it is their remarkably mastery of narration that is the author’s finest achievement.

This is an excellent read, a novel that is always decent, never horrifying, a crime thriller that is psychologically soft – even the most violent and macabre scenes are never shocking – and can be read by all ages. The first 250 pages are the best, and by the time the reader discovers the barely credible nature of the secret society, they have already been hooked by the story and will forgive the author’s weaknesses in order to find out how the story ends, the suspense unwavering until the end. It is no surprise that this novel has been very successful.

Synopsis: Boston city centre, 12:00 on the 24th December, a naked man walks down the street holding the decapitated head of a young woman. Together, the head of the city’s psychiatric hospital and an FBI analyst lead the investigation – an investigation that will put at risk both their lives as well as their very understanding of sanity. The case takes them back to some apparently random events that took place in the mysterious Salt Lake City 18 years ago. The murder defies the limits of sanity and, unbeknown to the investigators, to find the killer will mean unleashing the darkness of their own pasts. Majestically narrated, taking place across three distinct time periods, this tense thriller explores the limits of sanity.
