BOOK REVIEW THE DAY SANITY DIED Author: Javier Castillo From the reader report by: François Michel Durazzo This extraordinary story, many elements of which border on the unbelievable, is remarkably told, with suspense maintained throughout. A highly effective page-turner, the reader is keen to discover the conclusion to the story as it progresses chapter by short chapter, written in a clear and simple language. Efficiently phrased, it gets straight to the point, although still offers a certain number of descriptions and psychological analyses. Each chapter answers a question raised earlier and leaves another in its wake to be answered later, creating an expectation that encourages the curious reader to keep on reading. Indeed, it is their remarkably mastery of narration that is the author’s finest achievement. This is an excellent read, a novel that is always decent, never horrifying, a crime thriller that is psychologically soft – even the most violent and macabre scenes are never shocking – and can be read by all ages. The first 250 pages are the best, and by the time the reader discovers the barely credible nature of the secret society, they have already been hooked by the story and will forgive the author’s weaknesses in order to find out how the story ends, the suspense unwavering until the end. It is no surprise that this novel has been very successful.
