Dr. Art Mowery and his team at Exceptional Dentistry have changed the way most of his clients experience dentistry. His practice is one of very few in north Florida capable of offering I.V. sedation and implant dentistry as well as other complex procedures such as high quality cosmetics and extremely difficult reconstructive dentistry. Many of his clients were told there was little they could do to attain solutions to their complicated dental issues until they came to Dr. Mowery. Exceptional Dentistry has helped thousands of clients and placed more than 5,000 porcelain restorations during cosmetic and reconstructive smile makeovers. They have also successfully helped many more patients get relief from grinding and TMJ related head, neck and shoulder pain. Dr. Mowery served as a clinical adjunct professor at the University of Florida and taught at the world renowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies for over ten years. There, he taught the art and science of cosmetic, reconstructive and neuromuscular dentistry to other dentists from around the world. “I am absolutely dedicated to being the very best at whatever I do, especially dentistry,” says Dr. Mowery. “One of my favorite sayings is if it’s worth doing...it’s worth doing right. Everyone in our practice loves what we do every day and it shows. We believe in treating our clients like friends visiting our practice. We enjoy their company and are grateful they chose us for their dental care. “Our team and I continue our education so that we know and understand the latest dental techniques and procedures and we have expanded our services in an effort to help our clients. The more we can do in our office, the less likely a client needs to be referred out to another dental office. It makes life a little easier for them. “I can’t imagine going anywhere else now that I have been to Exceptional Dentistry,” says Mickey Pulcini. “Truly, I look forward to my visits. They explain all procedures in terms I can understand, everyone is always friendly and I trust them completely. After all, they do some of the really advanced dentistry there; isn’t that the type of dentist you want to go to?” Whether your smile needs a little help or a lot, Exceptional Dentistry is anxious to serve you. You can get much more information, see dozens of case before and after photos, and see testimonial videos at their website. Or, just call and schedule your consultation today! You’ll be glad you did.

Your teeth don’t always last a lifetime. And replacing missing teeth is not only good for your overall health, it’s also important to the health of your other teeth. When a tooth is lost, you lose some chewing ability and the space created by the missing tooth or teeth can cause other teeth to be lost, tipped, or crowded, and create even more problems. Obviously there are issues of poor appearance and lost self esteem caused by missing teeth. Dental implants should be considered as an option to replacing a failing or missing tooth. Implants do not get cavities, maintain good bone structure and never need a root canal. Drs. Art and Kim Mowery are highly trained in reconstructive, cosmetic and TMJ dentistry. They also perform implantology and bone grafting; hence there is no need to be referred to another dental office. Because of their training and experience, they understand how your new dental implant needs to function and appear within the rest of your smile design.

GiGi Cupcakes hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting on Jan. 11. A large crowd including company founder GiGi Butler and members of the Gainesville Chamber of Commerce enjoyed balloon animals, face painting and, of course, cupcakes. Eric Rollins and his wife, Nicole, wanted to share GiGi’s Cupcakes with Gainesville when they decided to open the boutique in Butler Plaza. Swamp Head Brewery could be doubling in size with a new, 13,500-SF facility planned for property near AMF Alley Katz Bowling Lanes.

A new cupcake boutique hopes to find a niche in restaurant row while Dunkin’ Donuts expands and Swamp Head looks at moving locations are among the highlights in this week’s notebook.

What’s Happening

in Local Business You don’t hear very often that a cupcake can change a life but for Eric Rollins and his wife, Nicole, that is their reality. After a trip to Birmingham, Ala where they were introduced to GiGi’s Cupcakes, the Rollins have opened their own franchise in Gainesville.

Nicole, who previously worked at UF Health Shands Hospital and graduated from UF with a degree in journalism, will oversee the daily operations while Eric is keeping his regular job as a computer engineer.

“We just fell in love with them,” Nicole said. “And I just wanted to share them with Gainesville – They’re amazing.”

Three new Dunkin’ Donuts opened in the area just in time for the New Year as part of an expansion by franchisee Velocity Brands LLC of Tampa. Gainesville now has six locations with the newest at 1412 W. University Ave.

Located at 3524 SW Archer Road in a new Butler Plaza strip that also will include WhichWich Sandwiches and BurgerFi, GiGi’s bakes eight different cupcake flavors fresh daily. Some of their most popular choices are Banana’s Foster, Rocky Road and Midnight Magic, among many others. For easy and delicious gift ideas, they also are mini-cupcakes and cheesecakes as well as gift cards and gift boxes. GiGi’s has been open for about a month before a large crowd showed up for the official grand opening and ribbon cutting on Jan. 11, 2014. Business stayed consistently steady leading up to the official opening and Rollins was already seeing signs of it picking up as word spread about the cupcakes, which are piled high with frosting. She hopes the location, mixed with friendly service and great cupcakes, fills a muchneeded niche. “In my family, we call the area on Archer Road with all the restaurants, ‘Restaurant Row,’” Nicole said. “My dream is that all those celebrating dinner with their beloved family and friends pop into GiGi’s Cupcakes and continue to spread the joy, even if it is just for their own sweet tooth.” The gourmet cupcake boutique was founded by GiGi Butler in Nashville, Tenn., in 2008 and now has 100 locations nationwide.

‘Time To Make The Donuts’

Brew on The Move Swamp Head Brewery plans to build a 13,300-SF brewery on a five-acre parcel near AMF Alley Katz Bowling Lanes off Southwest 42nd Ave. The culprit behind the move is the company’s current brewery and tasting room is in the Southwest Industrial Park that could end up demolished if plans stay on course for Celebration Pointe, a development that includes an I-75 overpass to link it with the planned northern expansion of Butler Plaza. The craft-beer maker’s current facility is 6,500-SF, meaning the new digs will double Swamp Head’s space, with room to expand in the future.

New Loosey’s Locale Loosey’s is the latest to enter Haile Plantation, taking the place of Roundabout Bar & Grill in the Publix Market Square at 2721 SW 91st Street, Suite 100. Loosey’s downtown location that opened in 2010 vowed to “keep it simple,” while the expansion into Haile features an expanded menu promising to “celebrate great American food.”

Tobacco Free Interview by Sarah G. Mason

Alachua

Heart disease, miscarriage, emphysema, stroke and cancer – all are ugly, painful and life-threatening side effects of smoking. This year, the community coalition Tobacco Free Alachua is working harder than ever to put a stop to tobacco use and the harm it causes. This diverse partnership is comprised of county and city officials, private citizens and representatives from the local school boards, health care organizations, local businesses and more – in other words, it’s a strong team of community members who are devoted to making a change.

accomplished is that we worked with Alachua County to achieve 12 out of 12 components of the CDC and Florida Department of Health policy for tobacco free schools,” said Marilyn Headley, Health Policy Specialist at the Alachua County Health Department and staff supporter of Tobacco Free Alachua.

“Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death and disease in the U.S.,” said Andrew Romero, Health Policy Specialist at the Alachua County Health Department and staff supporter of Tobacco Free Alachua. “Each year, tobacco kills countless Americans. It’s a serious health problem.”

“We’re now currently working to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke in apartment complexes,” said Headley. “It’s a tricky area, but we’re hoping to make more progress this year. People spend up to 70 percent of their time in their homes. If you have a neighbor who smokes, that’s a lot of time that you’re being exposed to secondhand smoke.”

A serious health problem indeed. According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the U.S. – that’s over 443,000 preventable deaths each year. Unfortunately, enacting antitobacco policies doesn’t come easy. “We certainly face struggles,” said Romero. “The death and disease associated with tobacco isn’t immediate – it takes several years to see. Even then, when people die these slow and painful deaths from tobacco use, they’re in hospitals out of the public eye.” Despite the struggles to bring this issue to light, Tobacco Free Alachua is making significant progress. “One of the biggest successes we’ve recently 12 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

Reducing secondhand smoke exposure isn’t Tobacco Free Alachua’s only goal. They’ve got their eyes set on youth-prevention, quitting and e-cigarettes, too. “Currently, we’re working to support the Alachua County regulation on e-cigarettes,” said Tobacco Free Alachua Chair, Blosmeli Leon. “We’re supporting their efforts to control the selling of these cigarettes to underage kids and teens.” “It’s one of the most interesting things in the world of tobacco right now,” said Romero. “There’s a whole e-cigarette revolution, and it’s a very complicated issue. E-cigarettes aren’t regulated at all; a kid can go into the store and buy one and no one’s going to check their ID.

Also, since there’s no regulation, we have no way of really knowing what’s in them, aside from what their industry’s marketing agents tell us.” It’s a frightening prospect, especially when you involve the youth. Luckily, Tobacco Free Alachua’s youth group called Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) are actively involved in this cause, too. “The youth have an incredibly powerful voice when discussing these issues with community leaders because they have a stake in the problem,” said Romero. “For them, it’s very personal; they feel like they’re being targeted by an industry with an immense amount of power, and that that industry is trying to get them addicted to a deadly product.” From youth prevention to policy changes to resources for smokers, Tobacco Free Alachua is making big changes one step at a time. As best put by Romero: “We’re a community coalition. We’re community members who are trying to create a tobacco free environment and a healthier community.”

BASEBALL Florida is among Collegiate Baseball’s “Fabulous 40” preseason rankings for the sixth consecutive season, coming in at No. 16. Ten of the SEC’s 16 teams made the Top 40, while the other six received votes. The Gators will begin the 100th season of Florida baseball by hosting Maryland for a threegame series beginning Feb. 14.

BASKETBALL Amanda Butler’s squad beat a top 10 t eam for the first time in 20 games during her seven-year UF career by upsetting No. 6 Kentucky 83–73 on the road. True freshman Ronni Williams notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. It was the Gators’ (12–3, 2–0) eight consecutive victory heading into a home conference tilt against Arkansas.

FOOTBALL • Duke’s Kurt Roper was named Florida’s third offensive coordinator in Will Muschamp’s four years as head coach. Roper, who’ll reportedly make $600,000 annually, was a finalist for the Broyles Award after the Blue Devils averaged more than 400 yards in his pro-style offense this season. He’s been Duke’s OC since 2008 and has been coach David Cutcliffe’s understudy for much of his career, including stops in the SEC at Tennessee, Kentucky and Ole Miss, where he coached current New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

• The Gators will play Big 10 power Michigan in Cowboys Stadium in 2017, the first time since 1991 that Florida has played a non-conference game beyond its borders. Cowboys Stadium also will be the site of the first College Football Championship in 2015.

GYMNASTICS NCAA announced a record 523 sites have been named hosts of 82 of 89 championships from 2014–18. Gainesville was selected to host the NCAA Gymnastics Regional Championship on April 2, 2016. Individual sports were announced separately before the NCAA’s unprecedented announcement. The preseason No. 1 ranked Gators hosted regionals 11 times and won the past three, including last year on their way to their first NCAA title. “Our gymnasts love to compete in front of the home crowd,” UF gymnastics coach Rhonda Faehn said. “It was such a great atmosphere in the O’Connell Center for the 2013 NCAA Regional and (I’m) sure our fans will again enjoy seeing some of the nation’s top competitors perform at the 2016 event.”

SWIMMING No. 3 Florida men’s knocked off No. 16 Florida State in front of a capacity home crowd. Senior Brad deBoard won a pair of individual sprints and relays for four wins for the men while seniors Elizabeth Biesel and

TENNIS The Gators’ women take on Florida State on Feb. 18, Texas A&M on Feb. 28 and Missouri on March 2 for the home crowd early in the spring schedule and are coming off back-toback national championships. Florida’s men open the spring ranked No. 15 by the ITA.

TRACK UF’s men vie for their third consecutive outdoor national championship and sixth overall title in five years under coach Mike Holloway. The Gators has home meets April 3-5 and April 19 during this outdoor season.

VOLLEYBALL Senior middle blocker Chloe Mann was named an AVCA First Team All-American for the second consecutive year to lead a school-record five Gators in earning All-American status. Act By Mike Capshaw Photos by Jim Burgess/UF Communications

Dorian Finney-Smith, a transfer from Virginia Tech, has made an impact with his size, scoring and agility this season.

Balancing Will history repeat itself with florida fielding another balanced lineup?

Balance is key to winning in life – and sports. Balancing a budget or balancing your job and personal life are common examples. Heck, even a car runs smoother on four balanced tires. For Florida coach Billy Donovan, putting balanced lineups together has resulted in one of the most successful basketball programs in the country.

This season, five Gators averaged double figures in scoring heading into SEC play. That’s happened only three times in the past 13 seasons, including the 2006 and 2007 National Championship teams and the 2011-12 team, which entered the NCAA tourney as a No. 7 seed and nearly made the Final Four after a narrow loss to Louisville. 14 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

Four Florida players scored in double figures eight times during the past 13 seasons, including two of the past three Elite Eight teams. Twice the Gators only had three players finish in double figures. Both seasons ended with trips to the NIT. That said, having five average double figures is above UF’s average – and has produced above average results with the best seasons in the program’s history. Balanced scoring takes the pressure off of every offensive player – and puts it squarely on the opponent. No one player is responsible for the bulk of the scoring and, conversely, defenders cannot focus on shutting any one player down.

It’s especially crucial in crunch time, those key moments that determine who wins, or who loses. With no “go-to” player, opponents don’t know what player to deny the ball for a last-second shot. Any one of the five players on the floor is capable of sinking the winning buzzer beater if a team is balanced. Here’s what RushTheCourt.net blogger Brian Otskey observed after Florida’s 77–75 win against then-No. 16 Memphis during the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden in mid-December. “Florida has so many weapons. The balanced scoring and overall talent on this team is scary. Billy Donovan has six capable scorers on his roster and can mix and match

Dancing is silent poetry. Simonides

Florida coach Billy Donovan has assembled his most balanced scoring team since winning back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007.

with a variety of different lineups that feature speed, perimeter shooting, interior dominance, or any combination of the three … the Gators have the look of a Final Four team yet again.” Even scarier is the fact the Gators were playing without 6-foot-10 true freshman Chris Walker, who began practicing during the break and should gain academic clearance for SEC play. Even without Walker, scoring has come from a number of different players led by surprising senior Casey Prather’s 17.3 points per game. Patric Young, Dorian FinneySmith, Michael Frazier and Scottie Wilbekin are averaging between 10–11 points per game while true freshman Kasey Hill isn’t far behind with 7.6 points per game. The Memphis game was only the third in which Wilbekin and Hill suited up together as Wilbekin served a suspension to start the season and Hill missed a month with an injury. When they’re on the floor at the same time, the offense appears to be at its best as evident by a 31–6 run against Kansas and

freshman phenom Andrew Wiggins a week before the Memphis game. That was only the duo’s second game together. Couple that with Walker’s impending debut and this Florida team – when at full strength – could have seven capable of double-digit scoring on any given night. That would be unprecedented, not to mention unlikely for a team averaging 71.1 points per game, but the fact remains that Donovan has one of his more balanced teams ever. “This team has got balance,” he said, according to the AP’s Mark Long. “There’s a lot of components to this team. And you know what, the last couple years our teams have been one-dimensional, and you can’t go far being one-dimensional.” Those was Donovan’s comments to the AP’s Mark Long in describing the 2006 team as it prepared for the Final Four.

The only difference between me and a madman is that I’m not mad. Salvador Dali

Time will tell if Donovan will again be describing a balanced team heading into this season’s Final Four.

Tigers Claim First State Football Title By North Central Florida Team Since 1997

Trenton By Truman Carter

Finishes Business “Finish business” became the battle cry of Trenton’s football team heading into 2013. Inspired all off season by a state title game loss, the Tigers were laser focused on returning to the Citrus Bowl in Orlando to take care of unfinished business by bringing home the school’s first football championship. The Tigers (12–1) did just that by deposing of top-ranked and undefeated Blountstown 14–0 in the Class 1A finals at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. They’re the first state football champs from north central Florida in 16 years. Trenton knocked off rival Dixie County 17–14 in the semifinals for its 21st consecutive home win and to avenge its lone loss – an 18–7 setback in Week 2 at Cross City. A school record 3,500 fans watched as Trevante McCleese secured the upset win with an interception at the Tigers’ 4-yard line in the closing seconds. 16 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

Piloted by senior quarterback Stephen Smith, the Tigers relied on a triple option/veer offense that scored 48 or more points in 10 of 11 of wins heading into the semifinals.

Martin Resigns

The seniors finished business by putting the finishing touches on remarkable careers, which saw the Tigers post a 36–3 record over the past three seasons. It’s the most wins by any team in the state’s Class 1A rural division since its inception in 2011.

Long-time Oak Hall volleyball coach Cari Martin resigned after posting a 581-195 record during her 26 years of leading the program. The Eagles won Class 1A state championships in 1997 and 1999, were state runner-up three times and reached the final four 12 times. They also won 19 district titles and 12 regional titles under Martin.

HOF Induction

Long-time area cross country/track coach Ron Norris was one of seven inductees into the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Daytona Beach on Jan. 11. In 38 years, Norris has guided teams to five state championships and five state runner-up finishes. His teams also won six regional titles and a whopping 30 district championships.

Former Buchholz guard Jessica Thomas, who was featured in Flourish magazine last spring, has played in all 16 games (with one start) as a true freshman at Miami. Sporting the No. 3, the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 7A Player of the Year is averaging 6.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 20.5 minutes per game.

Norris’ career began as an assistant coach at Gainesville High in 1975. He was head coach at P.K. Yonge from 1976–78, at Newberry from 1978–2000 and at Buchholz from 2001–12.

Spring Sports Area spring sports get underway this month. Feb. 3 is the official start of softball and tennis while baseball, track and field (1A/2A) and boys weightlifting begins Feb. 10. Lacrosse and track and field (3A/4A) is set for Feb. 17.

Quotable: “I’m looking for any place that likes to run, because I like to run, and that just feels like home to me. Whatever opportunity presents itself, I’m going to snatch up that opportunity. All the letters, the colleges and the coaches, it just motivates me to want to get out here and work harder because I know there is always someone out there who’s better than me, so I’ve got to keep pushing for it.”

quick crossover that left the defender on the ground as she dribbled past to the hole for two of her highlights during a 22-5 gameending run.

Regenia, sporting a purple shirt with silver sequins spelling out “GHS Basketball Mom 33.”

It’s not all about scoring, a phrase McKay often repeats. Several times McKay passed up open looks (even layups) to dish the ball to a teammate for easy bucket.

“All we’ve done as parents is help keep her mind right,” Johnny McKay said. “Put God first and always pray. Our family has a strong Christian foundation.”

That said, after committing the late turnover, McKay didn’t stomp the floor or show any signs of frustration and instead flashed a wide smile.

“If my teammates never touched the ball, then they would never be ready to be put in that position when we need them,” McKay said. “I believe in my teammates and the most important thing for me is to my sure I stay humble, make sure I get my team involved and just do whatever it takes to win.”

That foundation mixed with Janiah’s scoring surge should continue catching college coaches’ attention. She’s already drawn interest from dozens of schools, including Florida, Southern California, Southern Miss and Wichita State, among others. A 3.5 GPA and an ability to dribble with either hand equally well sets McKay apart from others.

“My coach always tells me that my attitude reflects the team,” McKay said. “I have to do my best to stay composed, stay collected, stay motivated and stay positive … Mistakes happens, but the best thing is to not let your emotions get the best of you because it can affect the whole team.”

Those traits are the makings of a strong leader, something coach David Gordon is counting on from his junior guard. He said McKay is also responsible for leading the team in the Lord’s Prayer before and after each game and practice. In fact, McKay’s one pre-game ritual is to pray.

Gordon said McKay’s recent run of highscoring games was not part of the game plan as she had never even broke 30 before the 39-point night.

McKay’s play has affected the entire team in a positive way as the win against GHS improved the Bobcats’ record to 18-2 overall. They were No. 2 in the state’s Class 6A rankings, according to MaxPreps, which is impressive considering three four-year starters were lost to graduation.

“When I don’t pray, I feel empty because I know that with Him, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” she said.

After dribbling the ball off her leg and out of bounds, an outspoken fan shouted, “That’s alright baby! You ain’t done nothing wrong!” It was one of the few mistakes Janiah McKay made during Gainesville’s 74-65 victory against rival Gainesville High, which completed an amazing three-game run for the junior guard. The long-armed point guard scored a career-high 44 points after putting up 39 and 38 points in two previous overtime wins. The 121 points in three games shattered a school record.

McKay’s all-around play has been the culprit behind this season’s surprising success. With her team trailing 60-52 with 4:30 remaining in regulation against Buchholz, McKay scored the next nine straight points to give GHS the lead. She stole the ball before racing down court for an easy breakaway layup and, at another point, used a lightening

“It’s not like that’s what we’re focused on doing or we’re keying on her,” Gordon said. “It’s just something that has happened as part of the system and it’s not like she’s just jacking up every shot that she can either. We do have a team and she’s just orchestrating a lot of what happens.” That unselfish nature is why folks around the school look up to McKay. “She’s phenomenal,” Hutchinson said. “I’ve been coming to a lot of big games and just really enjoy watching her play. Quick and Dirty

Home improvement guide BATHROOM REMODEL Average cost, $5000+

By Ginger Henderson

Starting a home improvement project is definitely an investment. If you’re considering remodeling your home, it’s important to take both cost and time into consideration. In addition, remodeling main living areas like bathrooms and kitchens can disrupt your day to day lifestyle for weeks – maybe even months. Luckily, there are some home improvement tips and tricks that can give you a fresh look without breaking the bank or being disrupted for an extended period of time. 18 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

KITCHEN REMODEL Average cost, $6000+

Fast: Sink and bath faucet upgrade

Look into DIY products that allow you to give your dated countertops a fresh, updated look. Many products on the market give the appearance of granite or marble at a fraction of the cost.

If you’re handy with plumbing (or have a friend who is) consider upgrading your standard sink faucets and bath/shower faucet and showerhead. Prices range depending on personal preference, but these upgrades can really take your bathroom from “eh” to “wow”. For an extra wow factor, consider upgrading the toilet seat.

Faster: Wall color update

Faster:

Depending on your square footage, you can give your kitchen a fresh coat of paint using just a gallon or two of paint and an afternoon. Paint is one of the best ways to get a big impact with minimal effort.

Upgrade your vanity space by giving your bathroom mirror some attention. Try checking out some tutorials available online to learn how to add molding or tile to give your mirror a finished look.

Fastest:

Fastest:

For an almost instant makeover, try replacing your cabinet and drawer pulls. Choose a fancy or elegant design to give your kitchen an upscale look, or try something whimsical for a punch of color and fun.

Toss the thin towels and worn bathmats and replace them with new, plush alternatives. Keep it calm and neutral with pastels and earth tones or add pops of vibrant color for more of a “pick me up” space.

Fast: Countertop facelift

Ways to Transform

Your Old Kitchen Into a

Gathering Place Let’s face it, the kitchen is the most used room in the home. It’s a gathering place for family and friends. It’s where conversations take place and memories are made. It should feel warm and inviting. Yet, so many of us wish we could change something about our kitchen so that it better reflects our personalities and our lifestyles.

20 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

Eli Mechlovitz, founder of the glasstilestore. com has compiled a list of five easy ways to transform your old space into a functional fashionable space this coming year. Make your kitchen trendy in 2014 by incorporating fresh colors in your back splash or by adding lighting, both of which can make your kitchen look brand new. Next year’s trends point to streamlined, almost minimalist kitchen features which make moving around the space a lot easier and more convenient. For 2014, a kitchen remains functional above all else, but with creative space allowed for personal decorating preferences. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key design points for the coming year’s kitchen area.

A subdued, neutral palette Recent surveys point to kitchen owners still preferring neutral shades of whites and greys as their kitchen backdrops. They provide a clean, minimalist ground for just

about any kitchen theme, and also make a great counterpoint to both natural and industrial materials, such as wood or chrome flooring and trimming.

Practical, streamlined appliances Fixtures such as faucets and sinks are looking more architectural than ever, and have functions designed for utmost practicality. For instance, high-clearance faucets make it easier to wash bigger pots and pans, and a swivel spout lends convenience for multi-tasking kitchen duties. As for bulky kitchen appliances, they are fast becoming replaced by smaller versions which do the job just as nicely (or even better). Induction stoves are taking over big ranges because they cook faster, look sleeker, are easier to clean, and do not take up a lot of space. There’s also a growing demand for multi-purpose kitchen implements such as coffee grinderpercolators.

lighting via windows or an open floor plan. Opening up windows is truly energy-saving for a kitchen that functions a lot in the daytime. It also lets steam out naturally so you won’t have to worry about the rest of your home smelling like lunch.

Seasonal

Brighter lights or bigger windows Even small spaces can improve with some illumination magic, which is why 2014 kitchen trends make full use of natural

Practical and convenient artificial lighting extends to the kitchen, too. Drop lights above the kitchen counter can have changeable shades for an instant makeover and mood lighting. Energy-saving bulbs like LED replace incandescent ones, and can also be used as a pilot light.

Tiled backsplashes become both functional and ornamental Glass tiles, whether they are subdued subway-style ones or come in colorful mosaic pieces, no longer have to be perfunctory features behind a kitchen sink or stove. Backsplashes are fast becoming favorite kitchen accent pieces because of their versatile looks and uses. They can provide a splash of color or texture to a neutral-themed kitchen while allowing convenient clean-ups after cooking.

Emphasis on cabinet access and storage Open shelving, like the ones found in restaurant and hotel kitchens are becoming favorites in busy home kitchens where a lot of cooking are done. For less busy kitchens, however, pull-out racks carrying specific kitchen utensils and implements are more desirable to keep them dust-free and hidden out of sight. Cabinet doors look more “invisible” and blend even more into the walls and countertops for a cleaner look and feel.

Home improvement and trend expert, Eli Mechlovitz is President and CEO of GlassTileStore.com. He believes that his constant stream of new and totally original tile designs is what’s keeping his business a step ahead of the competition. GlassTileStore.com revolutionized the way tiles are sold and bought online. The company offers free shipping and design help to customers, something you’d be hard-pressed to get at other tile stores. Describe yourself in 5 words. Mother. Wife. Survivor. Student. Healthy. How did Weight Loss Solutions help you get on track? For me, losing weight wasn’t an option, it was a priority. After winning my battle against cancer, I knew I had to lose weight for my health. I had every bit of motivation one person could have when I first went to Weight Loss Solutions, I just needed that little “push” to really get my journey started. That is exactly what I got. Since starting your weight loss journey, what was the most significant lifestyle change you made? I have made quite a few significant lifestyle changes. One being that I love to workout. It makes me feel so alive and accomplished. Another would be that I drink only water, and that’s just the way I

want it. I used to drink multiple soft drinks a day and I always thought my biggest challenge would be giving them up. It was actually very simple. What is the most positive thing about being a healthier you? The most positive thing is the impact I have on my daughter. Knowing that I have someone who is constantly looking up to me, learning, growing and trying to do things just like mommy, makes everything worth it. Any advice for others who desire to lose weight but don’t know where to begin? Losing weight and becoming healthy is extremely rewarding. The best advice I could give someone who desires to lose weight is to find your motivation and keep it. There is no doubt that the hardest part of losing weight is staying motivated. Weight loss isn’t something that happens overnight. You need to stick with it if you want to see results.

Are there any quotes that inspire you? “Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” —Lou Holtz

Grade Schoolers Preschoolers While preschoolers lack the necessary writing skills to pen a Valentine’s message, they are often experts at seeing the best in people. Have your child draw or use ink-stamped thumbprints to create an image for the cover of the card. Then, ask your child to dictate what he or she likes best about the recipient. If your child is able, have him write his or her name to “sign” the card (you can write the name yourself underneath if the writing is illegible). 26 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

Grade schoolers, who are now able to write complete sentences and take on more creatively challenging tasks, will likely enjoy this chance to create personalized cards for their friends. Give your child plenty of time and space to create, and encourage them to think about the things they enjoy about their friends as they are drawing the artwork for their cards. When they are ready to write, encourage them to focus on the individual qualities that make each person special – for instance, instead of “I like your brown hair,” have them think of saying, “I like that you always say hi to me at lunch.”

Tween and Teens Even though kids in these age groups have likely outgrown school Valentines parties, they can still learn valuable lessons from the holiday. Encourage your tween or teen to consider the people who have meant the most to them in the past year – a favorite teacher, friend or coach, for example. Have your child write a letter to that person explaining how their friendship or leadership helped him or her in life. Your child will learn an important lesson about gratitude and the recipient will be touched to know he or she had a positive impact on a young life.

Looks like you may need to do a bit more thinking before you bring a furry friend home. Remember, a dog is a serious commitment that needs time, money and of course, lots of love. Assess your current life situation and ask yourself, “Is this the right time in my life to become a dog owner? Am I financially able to care for a dog? Do I understand the full spectrum of responsibilities that a new dog will bring?” Only once you feel comfortable with these answers should you reconsider bringing a new pooch home.

If you answered mostly B: Congratulations! You’re ready for pet ownership. You and your family understand the responsibilities and can dedicate the time and attention a new dog will need.

If you answered mostly C: You’re almost there! In many cases, you’re ready to bring a dog home, but there are still a few kinks to work out. Before you take the big leap, make sure that you and your family are all on the same page when it comes to caring for your new dog. Work out a daily doggie schedule, plan ahead for vacation days and make sure to do your research to choose the right dog for you. I have nothing to declare except my genius. Oscar Wilde

Instead, try this little trick to save their ego and hide your memory lapse. Hi says, “Hi this is Peter. You say smilingly, “Hi . . . I know TWO Peters. Which one is this? When he gives his last name, make it sound like you are pleased that it’s THIS Peter, not that OTHER one.

But, whoops, suppose even his full name doesn’t kick start your memory? Then proceed to Step 2. Say, “Hello, Peter, good to hear from you! It’s been a long time. Remind me of what we were last talking about. If you really do know the guy, you’ve saved him the humiliating task of explaining who he is. But, what if their name is Ichabod, Ellsworth or Esmeralda? (It’s not too likely that you know two Ichabods, Ellsworths or Esmeraldas.) In that case, skip step 1, and proceed directly to step 2. This little trick is not 100% fool-proof. But it’s a lot better than, “Uh, um, WHO???

Seven ways you’re

Wasting Money each month

Tired of looking into an empty wallet every month? Even if you keep a tight budget, you may still be wasting money on somewhat “hidden” expenses. Here are seven sneaky monthly costs to look out for: Monthly Subscriptions How many apps, programs and online media sits are you subscribed to? Out of those, how many do you use on a regular basis? If you watch Netflix every weekend, that eight dollar monthly charge makes sense, but if you only tune in every few months, it’s money wasted. Cancel the services you rarely use and next time you begin a subscription, don’t set up an automatic billing cycle. This way, you’ll never forget what you’re paying for.

Electricity/Gas How often do you forget to turn off your plugged-in electronics or thermostat before leaving the house? By simply turning your thermostat back about 10 or 15 degrees for 8 hours while you’re at work, you can save 5 to 15 percent on your heating bill, according to Energy.gov. Unused electronics also waste money when they’re plugged in. To save money, unplug things like computers and coffee makers when they aren’t being used or put them on a timer, like your thermostat.

An Expensive Cell Phone According to SaveLoveGive.com, extra cell phone minutes and data charges cost consumers over $52 billion each year. Pause and consider if you’re a good candidate for a smaller number of minutes or data each month. If you’re almost always way below the max, maybe it’s time for a downgrade.

A Home Phone Line

Groceries that are Never Eaten

How often do you use your home phone line? If you haven’t yet considered cutting the cord and switching over to only using a cell phone, you may want to do so. Most of your home phone calls are probably from relatives or telemarketers anyway. For long-distance or international calls, there are great programs online, such as Skype or Google Voice charge marginal fees.

How much do you spend in groceries that end up going bad before you eat them? Fresh fruits and veggies are a great choice, but eating them requires bi-weekly shopping trips. US News Money states that Americans waste about 25 percent of the foods and beverages we purchase each year, and that can really add up! To solve this problem, try planning more meals ahead of time, buying less in bulk and taking stock of what you’re actually using.

Gym Fees We wouldn’t want to pressure you to stop living a healthy, active life by any means, but the fact is, if you have a gym membership you’re simply not using, you’re throwing away money each month. According to Statisticbrain.com, 67 percent of people with memberships almost never go to the gym. If your membership is about 55 dollars each month, you’re wasting 600 dollars each year. If you hit the gym only once or twice a week, consider moving your workout outside or into your home. You’ll save money while still staying fit.

Women might be able to fake orgasms. But men can fake a whole relationship. Sharon Stone

Unhealthy Habits Are you a smoker? A drinker? Addicted to Starbucks? Think about all of the money you could save by quitting or cutting back on these habits and what you could purchase with the cash. Enough to buy a coffee maker of your own, that’s for sure! Of course, these are only a few ways you can save money each month. For a personalized plan, do a deep dive into your specific budget and adjust accordingly. A bit of extra thought could lead to a lot of extra cash! Flourish Magazine | February/2014 31

Expiration Dates

Demystified By Kat Freestone

We’ve all had moments of expiration date-skepticism. We swirl milk jugs and sniff ketchup bottles, wondering if the “use by” date is truly accurate. And yet, it’s no wonder we’re often left guessing. Between “sell by,” “best by,” “use by” and “born on,” expiration dates aren’t always clear. To set the record straight, here are a few common kitchen items and their true expiration dates:

Good For: 18-24 months either in or out of the fridge Extra Info: Keep olive oil in a cool, dark place, and consider refrigerating during the summer months

Good For: 1 week past the sell by date

MILK

Extra Info: If milk develops a strange odor or taste, toss it

OLIVE OIL

Extra Info: Stick butter can last nearly a year in the fridge

EGGS

Extra Info: Eggs are usually fine to eat long past the sell-by date, but it’s best to store them in the coolest part of the fridge, not the door

Extra Info: Oil separation may occur in this tasty childhood favorite if you don’t refrigerate the jar

HONEY

Extra Info: The high acidic level and low water content of this sweet ingredient keeps bacteria out

32 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

Good For: 7-10 days after the sell by date

YOGURT

MAYO

MUSTARD

Extra Info: Yogurt can also be kept 1-2 months in the freezer

Extra Info: An open jar of mayo can even be safe beyond 4 months, though the color and texture may change

Good For: 6 months after opening if kept in the fridge

Good For: 1-2 years past the expiration date

Good For: Nearly forever

Extra Info: Use caution when examining sour cream for freshness, since its soured taste makes it difficult to judge

Good For: 2-3 months after the expiration date if kept in the fridge

Good For: 3 months in the pantry, after which it can be stored in the fridge for another 3-4 months

PEANUT BUTTER

SOUR CREAM

Good For: 3-5 weeks in the fridge

Good For: 2 weeks after the expiration date for old-fashioned butter

BUTTER

Good For: 2 weeks in the fridge

Extra Info: Unopened mustard can last up to 3 years

KETCHUP

Extra Info: Ketchup can be safe to eat after the expiration date if no mold or odor appears

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain. Vivian Greene

TIRE AND SERVICE CENTER

Word Origins Fun Facts

By Kat Freestone

Ever wonder why SOS is the symbol for distress? Why we RSVP to an event? Why we detonate TNT? Read on to find out. SOS

USA

‌is commonly written S.O.S and is thought to be an acronym for “Save Our Ship.â€? In fact, this is wrong. SOS doesn’t stand for anything. Instead, it’s thought that SOS was chosen because in Morse code it’s signified by three dots, three dashes, then three dots – a combination that is not easily misinterpreted for anything else.

‌was not always an abbreviation for United States of America. Before 1920, this acronym was more commonly used to mean United States Army.

TNT ‌earned its name for a good reason. This chemical compound’s real name is trinitrotoluene – a tongue twister, no doubt.

G.I. ‌originated in 1908 and was an abbreviation of galvanized iron. The term was picked up by U.S. soldiers in WWII as an adjective meaning “U.S. Army equipment.â€? Apparently, the word was changed to mean “U.S. Army soldierâ€? due to the comical notion that the men themselves were manufactured by the government.

RSVP ‌comes from the French Repondez S’il Vous Plait, which translates into “please reply.â€? In the U.S., it was considered fashionable in high society to use French as the language of refinement up until around the 19th century. And so the acronym stuck. If you are going through hell, keep going. Sir Winston Churchill

Date Night

Ideas

These days, it’s hard to be creative when it comes to date night. Dinner and a movie can be great, but do you really want to eat at Olive Garden for the fiftieth time and wash dinner down with a poorly rated comedy? Straying from the typical date will not only make for a fun night, but it will also bring excitement to your relationship. Here are some fun date ideas that will leave you with lasting memories. Make-your-own Sushi night Sushi is a natural aphrodisiac. Hit-up your local Asian food market for ingredients. Bonus: Add some sake to the mix and your night is sure to be exciting.

Amp Things Up By Staying In Adrenaline – it’s that heart-pounding feeling you can’t ignore. We all know adrenaline has an effect on our bodies and minds, but did you know this chemical can influence your relationship, too? Research suggests that couples who engage in exciting, adrenaline-inducing activities have stronger bonds – it’s like an aphrodisiac for relationships. In fact, one study at a small Midwestern University found a significant

positive correlation between adrenaline and attraction; as a couple’s adrenaline levels increased, so did their attraction levels.

Not to worry – there are plenty of easy, inexpensive ways to amp up the heat without ever leaving home.

According to relationship expert Seth Meyers, PsyD, things can sometimes start to feel boring and predictable in long-term relationships. To combat this, partners can engage in exciting activities to get their hearts pumping and their love flowing. Don’t have access to rollercoasters or fast cars?

Try biking at top speeds, admitting a deep secret, writing a steamy love note, trying something new, watching an action movie, playing a two-player video game, watching a workout video, confronting your fears or dancing to upbeat music.

Grab that Promotion You’ve Been Craving How to

By Katie Moss

Have you been stuck in the same job for years? Do you go above and beyond your standard duties but still feel like you’re getting nowhere? Growing our careers is something we all want, but not something that’s always easy to achieve. Luckily, there are a few simple ways to get your boss’s attention and – keep your fingers crossed – finally move up in the workplace. Not Just Another Sheep To succeed in the workplace, make yourself stand out. Prove that you have initiative and dedication by volunteering for additional projects, helping coworkers with temporary assignments and working beyond your standard responsibilities. Not only will this help you shine, but the extra work will give you added experience, help you show off your skills and expand your network within the company.

Speak Up! If you don’t make your career aspirations known, your manager is likely to overlook you. These days, employers want to see their employees do more than just the minimum; they want passion. That means enjoying what you do while showing an eagerness for more.

Show Off Your Work Ethic You’ve been working hard for years and now isn’t the time to slack. Make the extra effort each day to deliver what’s needed 40 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

accurately and on time. Become the go-to person who gets things done. Stay up to date on current events and happenings in your industry. Be the expert.

Seek Out a Mentor Think about your coworkers for a moment. Who always conducts themselves professionally? Who can help you determine your strengths and weaknesses? Who do you look up to? Seek out this person and ask them if they’d be willing to help you grow professionally. As an added bonus, they might even spread word of your enthusiasm, efforts and strengths throughout your company.

A Steady Pace Wins the Race Don’t feel discouraged if your boss doesn’t immediately offer you a promotion. What’s important is to stay the course and to keep your head up. In the meantime, remember that you’re building important skills, gaining confidence and expanding your professional network. Stay positive, work hard and good luck!

In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. Martin Luther King Jr.

Gimme 5:

Money-$aving

Tips

By Truman Carter

Even when you’re Broke!

If you’re like me, those links that pop up about saving money for retirement seem like a waste of space on the computer screen. The simple fact is when you’re in debt today, how in the heck are you supposed to figure out how to save money for tomorrow? Sure, you’re paying into social security because the government makes you, but there are no guarantees that money will actually be there when you retire.

Get a second job

Many Americans under the age of 50 face significant debt in the form of credit cards, mortgages and student loans, so just keeping up with those bills alone erases any thoughts of saving in the long-term. However, there are a few tips you can use to save money now, even if you’re broke. Times are tough, so make every penny count. Eliminate Debt This should be the No. 1 goal of every money-saving plan. The consensus believes it’s best to target accounts with the highestinterest rates first. One thing that will help is to consolidate debts, which means combining all debts into one loan to lower the overall interest rates. There also are websites to help with debt elimination or reduction, which is working with creditors on settlements to lower the total amount owed. The general rule is the only time that saving money should take the place of getting out of debt is to build up an emergency fund, which can help you survive for 3-6 months in case you lose your income.

You want to see results from your savings, so set some short-term goals that can be achieved. Those are the easy ones, but it’s also important to set long-term goals, like buying a house or a car in two years. If you set too many long-term goals, it’s easy to get frustrated by not seeing the results that can come with setting and reaching short-term goals. Once you set your goals, determine how much money you need to save each week, month or pay period to attain those goals.

Perhaps you work 40–50 hours, with all of the time taking place between 8–5 on weekdays. Whatever your shift is, check out part-time job ads that fit around your regular work schedule and still allow you time with the family, which is priceless. Even a couple of extra hours a week at a side gig can generate the extra money needed to make a serious dent in your debt, or help to save for that nest egg. Like with couponing, don’t be too proud to pick-up a job delivering newspapers at night or working at a convenient store. Sure, you may be a professional with a major college degree, but you have to pay off that student loan somehow.

Couponing

Budget expenses

Yes, don’t be too proud to clip coupons or utilize discounts by frequenting websites like RetailMeNot, FatWallet, CouponCabin, Groupon and Coupons.com. These sites offer coupon codes, promotional rates and printable coupons for everything from household appliances and oil changes to travel deals and groceries. Things we all use that we can save money on. No matter how fat your bottom line is, a dollar saved is a dollar earned. By using these websites, the savings will quickly add up. Also, be sure to check out weekly sales at stores like Publix, which posts its fliers online. Matching coupons with Buy 1 Get 1 Free deals will lead to huge savings.

There are two basic columns that should appear on any individual or family’s budget. What is earned (how much you have coming in) and what is spent (living expenses). Because most of your bills involve monthly payments, it’s usually wise to keep a monthly budget listing how much is owed and when the payment is due. To save money, it’s essential to take a serious look at your expenses and spending. Don’t overlook the little stuff, even those $10 trips to Walgreen’s or McDonald’s. It all adds up. Having a plan and knowing exactly where every dime is spent will make a major difference in your ability to save on things you may not actually need.

Set attainable goals

Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right. Henry Ford

Adopting a Green Lifestyle By Daddy Nickell

To Benefit Family & Community When my wife Katy and I got married, building a life that was safe and healthy to raise a family was of the utmost important to us. Living green has been a lifelong practice that really flourished as our family grew. Our number one priority has been to raise a happy family and create a healthy environment for us as well as for our surrounding community. We are often asked, “What can I do to live a green lifestyle?” The answer is simple. If everyone would make small changes in their everyday lives, it could make a significant impact on the strain for resources in their local communities. Katy and I have compiled a list of some simple ways we all can contribute to making a smaller footprint.

10 Tips for Living a Greener Life 1) Reduce Water Consumption – There are several ways families can reduce their water consumption. 36 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

• Take showers instead of baths. Newer high-efficiency showerheads provide good water pressure and use less water than filling a bath tub. • Shorten Shower time. Less time in the shower saves up to 5 gallons of water per minute you cut from shower time. • Use high efficiency toilets. Over the past several years manufacturers have worked to make toilets more water efficient and bacteria-resistant which makes them easier to clean. • Xeriscape – Be thoughtful in your landscaping choices. Utilize plants and grasses that are drought tolerant. Reduce water consumption and garden maintenance simultaneously. • Plant trees for shade. Not only will the shade help reduce cooling costs, it will also increase property values when the trees mature.

2) Use Natural Cleaning Products – Natural cleaning products are readily available at most supermarkets. They clean, disinfect and deodorize the same way conventional cleaning products do without harmful chemicals. Read labels before you purchase. Natural ingredients include baking soda, borax, cornstarch, lemon juice, mineral oil, vinegar and washing soda. If you choose to make your own, add essential oils for fragrance. 3) Maximize Solar Power – Consider installing solar panels to heat and cool your home. Solar panels will reduce energy levels and benefit your entire community by reducing energy consumption at the local power plant. 4) Preserve Air Quality– Use eco-friendly paints the next time you update a room in your house. Eco-friendly paints have very low levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and come in a wide array of colors.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is. Yogi Berra

5) Reduce Utility Consumption – Upgrade to a high quality air filtering system. By providing better air ventilation and exhaust in your home you will have cleaner air to breathe while reducing strain on your community’s electric and gas consumption. 6) Buy Natural and Organic Products – When making purchases for furniture and bedding, choose organic products made from sustainable materials like unbleached wool, bamboo, or natural plant fibers. Using eco-friendly furniture is an excellent way to detox your home. Organic mattresses made from wool or natural latex have been shown to reduce allergens in the air.

the amount of processed foods in your diet. Eating clean will improve your health and cut down on landfill items by cutting out cans, glass and plastics in your trash. 9) Conduct an Energy Audit – Discover where you have leaks and plug them up. Inefficient windows and doors can cost a lot in utility bills in the winter. If you still feel drafts, hire a professional auditor through the Department of Energy’s Energy Saver site. They can make excellent recommendations to make your home weather tight.

7) Use Re-usable Containers – Rather than using foil or plastic wrap, try using re-usable storage containers for leftovers or lunches. Consider taking a coffee mug to work instead of using Styrofoam cups. Not only will you save money, you will also reduce the amount of items that sit in a landfill for years decomposing.

10) Recycle – Most major cities offer free recycling as part of weekly trash removal programs. Take advantage of the service and sort through glass, plastic, aluminum and paper. Quarterly go through closets and drawers and find clothes the kids have outgrown or that you simply don’t wear anymore and donate to a thrift store or homeless shelter. Items that are gently used can benefit others in your community.

8) Eat Clean – More processing equals less nutrient density in foods. Focus on buying fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Reduce

Bringing

Nature

By Ginger Henderson

to Life

Bring a touch of life to your child’s cold winter days with these fun, educational crafts.

Soda Bottle Bird Feeder Materials: • Soda bottle, clean and dry • Birdseed • Wooden spoons (2) • Permanent marker • Craft knife • Small eye screw • Fishing line, twine or string

Rainbow trees

Start by soaking the sidewalk chalk in water for a few hours to soften it. Use that time to pick out the perfect tree for your masterpiece. Trees with smooth bark work best. When the chalk has softened, rub it onto the trunk. Vary the colors to achieve the full rainbow effect. Finally, blend the colors with a paintbrush dipped in water.

To begin, use the permanent marker to mark a spot about two inches from the bottom of the bottle. Turn the bottle halfway around and make another mark, this time about four inches from the bottom of the bottle. Next, use the marker to draw two small circles opposite of these marks on the bottle. Using the craft knife, slit the marks and cut out the circles. Slide the wooden spoons, handle first, through the holes and slits to create perches for the bird visitors. Twist the eye screw into the cap of the bottle to allow the bird feeder to be hung. Finally, fill the feeder with birdseed and thread the fishing line, twine or string through the eye screw. Hang in an area convenient for easy viewing.

Teachable Moment:

Teachable Moment:

Use this time with your child to explain the colors in a rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet – and why we sometimes see them in the sky. You can also talk about the parts of the tree – trunk, roots, branches, leaves – and the role they play in the tree’s life.

Use this opportunity to talk with your child about the migratory patterns of birds. Visit your local library and check out a book to help you identify the birds you see visiting your feeder. Try mapping the specific species’ routes to see where you fall on their migratory journeys.

This colorful project certainly adds a pop of color to the dreary winter landscape!

Indoor

Gardening With Kids By Ginger Henderson

The days may be feeling cold and dreary, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy an early spring. Plant an indoor garden with your kids to help ease the winter doldrums and keep your green thumb active! Not sure how to begin? Read on to learn about supplies, spaces and good plants to use.

Places and Spaces Your indoor garden space can be as simple or as elaborate as you’d like. A sunny windowsill works well for most indoor plants, but you’ll need to spend a little time determining the best spot for your specific varieties. South and west facing windows receive the best light and are great for root and leaf vegetables such as carrots, beets or herbs. Looking to step things up? Think about investing in grow lights. These fluorescent lamps hang over plants and give you more control over the amount of light they receive.

Necessary Supplies When it comes to supplies, it’s simple! All you need are pots, plants and soil, but choosing the proper version of each can help expand the educational reach of your garden. Use clear containers such as clear mason jars or clear plastic pots to allow your child to see the growth process. Likewise, start your plants from seed to help Assassins! Arturo Toscanini

your child see each stage of development and identify each part of the plant as it emerges. The best potting material is potting mix, as it contains necessary nutrients for your plants. It also brushes off clothing easily, making cleanup a bit easier when working with your kids.

Good Plants for Beginners Celery – Simply cut off the bottom 2 inches from a celery bunch and place the cutting in a shallow dish with a half-inch of water. Once the celery begins to sprout, transfer it to a pot to help it continue its growth. Remember to check the dish regularly and add water as needed while you’re waiting for the celery to sprout. Sweet Potato – Start by inserting at least three toothpicks into the middle of the sweet potato. These toothpicks will help hold the sweet potato in place. Place the sweet potato into a glass mason jar, resting the toothpicks over the mouth of the jar. Fill

the jar with water until the sweet potato is about half covered. Change the water every two to three days as your sweet potato grows. Once your sweet potato has sprouted, carefully pinch off the sprouts (called splits) and place them in a jar or glass of water until roots appear. Finally, place the rooted slips into a container of potting soil. While your children may not be patient enough to wait for actual sweet potatoes to grow (they take at least 100-140 to reach maturity), they can enjoy watching the quick growth of the vines. Mason Jar Terrariums – Terrariums are a great choice for kids since they are a self-sustaining ecosystem. You can use any small plant in your terrarium, although flowering plants like pansies create beautiful, colorful results. Simply place the small plant along with potting soil into the mason jar and twist on the lid to seal. Place the jar where it can receive bright, indirect sunlight. A place to hang

your heart

Hearts are everywhere. Cupid’s love arrows are flitting through the air, so it must be close to Valentine’s Day! What better time to gather around the kitchen table, pull out the ingredients and craft. Making this cute little heart wall-hanging is easy, inexpensive and a great way to spend the evening with those you love. These decorations can grace your February for years to come and it’s easy to add to them as the family grows and changes.

You’ll need: • 2 Cups Flour • 1 Cup Salt • 2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil • ¾ to 1 Cup Water (enough to reach a clay-like consistency) • Rolling pin • Acrylic paints and brushes OR food coloring • Heart shaped cookie cutters • Boxed drink or coffee stir straws • Waxed or parchment paper • Twine, ribbon or fishing line • High gloss clears spray paint Allow the kids to measure and mix flour and salt well. Add vegetable oil and small amounts of water, stirring and adding more until you get a clay-like consistency. Then pinch off pieces of clay about the size of your fist. Flatten it in your hand and add 3–4 drops of food coloring. Fold the clay over the food coloring to keep it from getting on your hand. Kneed the clay, breaking it and reworking it until the color is dispersed. As everyone gets their clayrounds colored, combine them all together and kneed it to mix the color evenly. Give each child a sheet of waxed or parchment paper. (We taped ours to the table to avoid problems.) Let them roll the clay to about ¾ – 1 inch thick. Empty foil tubes make great rolling pins for little ones, and won’t hurt if they’re dropped on little toes. Give me a museum and I’ll fill it. Pablo Picasso

Have the children cut the clay and remove the excess, returning it to the mixing bowl. Use small boxed drink straws or coffee stir sticks to make holes for hanging the hearts. Carefully lift hearts to an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 250 degrees for about 1 hour. Flip the hearts and bake about 10 minutes longer. Thicker pieces may need to cook longer, but clay that is too thick may crack.

The Rose To make the rose, we added more red food coloring and two drops of blue to our pink clay. (Mix both at the same time to avoid blue streaks.) After the colors are mixed well, make four or five small, peasized balls of clay. Flatten them between your finger and thumb. Then roll one end, leaving the other to shape itself. It will roll loosely, making the innermost petal of the rose. Take the second flattened pea. Hold the bottom of it against the bottom of the first petal and roll it, just like you did the first one. Continue with all petals, rolling only at the bottom and leaving the top to fan out on its own. Make sure the petals don’t start the same place the previous one stopped. Overlap them to make the rose look as realistic as possible. You can move petals a little, opening them up or closing them to get your best looking rose.

Mix another small amount of clay with green. Make pea-sized balls again and flatten them. This time, shape leaves. Make a very small snake as the stem. Moisten the backs of the rose, petals and stem by licking your finger. Place the rose on the heart before baking.

Vertical Heart Wall Decor All children love to see their names on things, and hearts are no different. Use rub-on lettering or write it yourself in permanent marker. We poked two holes in the top of each heart and one at the bottom. Use tape to give each side of the ribbon a hard tip and lace it into the top heart, one lace going into each hole (front to back). Re-lace through the same hole to keep the heart securely in place. Run the ribbon behind the heart to the bottom hole. Bring both ribbons through the bottom hole and lace the next heart on in the same way. When all hearts are in place, tie the ribbon in front of the bottom hole of the last heart.

Hang and Enjoy! Wishing you a Happy Valentine’s to you and your loved ones!

Difficult Topics for Little By Ginger Henderson

Hearts

Few things seem as difficult to explain to children as the unkindness often present in American history. Schools’ February focus on Black History Month sometimes brings difficult questions as children struggle to reconcile the things they’ve learned with the values they’ve been taught. When topics such as segregation, slavery and abuse give your little ones pause, take the opportunity to make the most Look for the Positive of such teachable moments. and Give Affirmation When dealing with such heavy topics, children will often struggle to place their feelings and emotions. Help them by Acknowledge and Correlate reminding them that positive things were After hearing and learning about these events in school, your child may look to you achieved even through these difficult times. “It’s terrible that people were treated to “decompress.” These heavy topics are differently because of something they often very difficult for tender young hearts, couldn’t control, like the color of their skin. so your response is vital. Begin by It’s taught us a lot, though, and today things acknowledging what your child is telling are better.” Children will also often feel you. “Segregation was a very difficult time misplaced guilt or anger, and you should for African Americans. Can you believe help them through those feelings as well. people used to only allow people of a “It was a horrible time for our ancestors, certain color to use a certain bathroom?” but their strength has helped us be stronger Then try relating the situation to something today,” or, “Even though our ancestors made in your child’s life to make it more concrete. “That would be like if you weren’t allowed to terrible mistakes with the way they treated people, we can learn from their mistakes use the upstairs bathroom because you’re a and do better.” girl. Isn’t that ridiculous?” 28 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

Encourage Forward Thinking Extend your child’s learning experience by encouraging forward thinking. “While it’s important to remember the events of our past, we also have to think about the events of our future. What can we do today that will help things continue to get better?” Encourage your child to write a list, draw a picture, shoot a video or use other creative means to express themself. By encouraging honest, open dialogue and answering your children’s questions tactfully, you will help your children make sense of senseless events in our history. These lessons will help your children grow in kindness and remind them that they are the keys to bringing change in the future.

The age of

Over-parenting: Good parents always have their children's well-being in mind. But what happens when parents take their attention a bit too far? How much parenting is too much, and how do you know when you’ve reached that point?

It's natural to urge your children to put on their warm jackets when it's chilly outside or make sure they have enough snacks when they head off on a school trip, but it's not wise to try to control their every move. The fact is, most parents simply want to be better parents than their parents were to them. They want their children to be well-rounded, liked and successful. These things aren't helped by over-parenting, however – in fact, they can actually be harmed by it.

Think back to your own childhood If you grew up in the ‘70s, ‘80s or even before, you might look back and marvel at the freedom that you enjoyed. Perhaps you traveled by yourself to school or chose your own pastimes after dinner. For many children today, things are different. Recently, Richard Weissbourd wrote a book called The Parents We Mean to Be: How Well-Intentioned Adults Undermine 26 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

Children’s Moral and Emotional Development. In this book, Weissbourd speaks to the fact that today's generation of parents is the first generation that really wants to be friends with their children. Instead of concentrating on rules and manners, they're more focused on bonding with their kids. In short, his argument is that children need time to grow into their own selves and their own beliefs; they don't always have to be babied. Perhaps parents today are simply looking for the engagement from their children that they didn't get from their parents growing up. They're looking for “friends” to support them emotionally instead of leading their children as a moral compass — and doing so from the sidelines. Parents should make their relationship with their children less about them and more about their kids.

So, what's a concerned parent to do? Think about how you're impacting your child and their future ability to make their own decisions and be self-reliant. Disengaging from your children a bit by allowing them to do activities they love uninterrupted or sending them off to summer camp can be a great learning

How much is too much? experience that will prepare them for the future. You can't make your children happy, but you can give them the space to find happiness for themselves. Think about the times when you were happiest as a child. For me, it's the times when I would explore the woods behind my house in the cool Southern fall weather. Sometimes my brothers were there, and sometimes they weren't, but my parents certainly never made an appearance unless they were specifically invited to do so. I cherished my moments of freedom, and it's likely that you can remember a scenario when you did, too. Finding a balance between over-parenting and under-parenting can be a challenge. You can't constantly wring your hands and worry about every potential danger or obstacle facing your child. Use your best judgment, and concentrate on what really matters. Also, remember that people (including children) reach greatness by working hard, failing, picking themselves up and trying again. You simply must give them the space to do so. And, once they've accomplished something wonderful, congratulate them on a job well done.

The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work. Emile Zola

Bundled Babies By Sarah G. Mason

When the weather is chilly, there are several simple rules: Wear layers, bring extra and don’t forget your gloves! For babies, however, the rules aren’t as clear. You want to make sure your little guy is warm enough, but when does just enough become too much? According to pediatrician David Geller, it definitely takes time and practice before you can tell whether your baby is too hot or too cold. In those first months, most babies’ bodies don’t regulate temperature well and can easily become over- or under-heated. Luckily, you’re little guy is likely to tell you – albeit subtly – if he’s uncomfortable.

If your baby is sleeping soundly, feeding well, calm and not too cranky, then he’s probably at a comfortable temperature. Check his hands, head and feet and the back of his neck – are they either hot or cold to the touch? This can be an indicator that more or less layers are needed. Generally, keep in mind that infants need the same amount of clothing as adults do when indoors, but more layers outdoors. Above all, use your intuition. You know your baby better than anyone; if he or she seems uncomfortable, an extra layer or two may be needed.

This book fills a much-needed gap. Moses Hadas

Mighty Meal

Planning

Planning weekly family meals is…hard. Between portion sizes, expiration dates and picky eaters, it can be tough to find a good balance of healthy, affordable and – most importantly – tasty. If you’d like to simplify your weekly grocery run, there are a few key ideas to keep in mind. By Sarah G. Mason Write down what you’ve got on hand. It’s one thing to glance in the fridge and make a mental note of that half-empty egg carton, but it’s another thing entirely to remember – and incorporate – those leftovers into next week’s meals. Make a list, starting with the foods that are due to expire and ending with more hardy ingredients. Avocado and tomatoes should top the list, while potatoes and salsa can come farther down, for instance. Pick your dishes ahead of time – never once you’re at the store. To ensure you formulate a well-balanced meal plan, steer clear of last-minute planning; it’s easy to grab a box of instant mac-n-cheese when you’re standing in the grocery aisle and out of ideas. Study the list you made and go from there. Do 24 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

you have leftover tomatoes and celery that needs eating? Add potatoes to your list and make a stew, or grab some lettuce and create a salad. Often, the best ideas come from ingredients you already have on hand! Ask your family for input. Though you can’t always please everyone, giving each family member a chance to offer suggestions will help in the planning and ensure that all voices are heard. Does Jimmy like chicken but Stacy prefers fish? Compromise – one chicken night, one fish night, each alongside that leftover stew and salad you were planning! Buy enough for leftovers, then set the date. Contrary to popular opinion, buying more than you know you’ll eat isn’t bad or wasteful, so

long as you go in with a plan. If you’re following a recipe, pay special attention to the serving size and be prepared to make double. Then, pick a day specifically to eat the leftovers. This is important – if you don’t set aside a day for leftovers, they may go to waste. This is a great way to streamline meal plans and to save time and energy. Do the prep work ahead of time. It can be tempting to grab a nutrition-less microwave TV dinner when you know you don’t have time for elaborate cooking. Instead of falling into that trap, do some of the prep work for dinner in the morning or have the kids pitch in when they get home from school. Then, when dinnertime rolls around, all you’ll have to do is throw a few things together and voilà – easy!

Winter Additions By Kat Freestone When we think of dieting, deprivation often comes to mind. After all, dieting focuses on restrictions: No sugar, no carbs, no fat, no fun. But what if, instead of concentrating on everything we have to remove from our diet, we focused on foods we can add to it? Here are a few currently in-season winter fruits and vegetables you can add to your clean-eating grocery list!

Apples

Beetroot

Brussel Sprouts

1 medium apple has 95 calories, 0.3 grams of fat and 25 grams of carbs

1 cup beetroot has 60 calories, 0.2 grams of fat and 13 grams of carbs

1 cup Brussels sprouts has 38 calories, 0.3 grams of fat and 8 grams of carbs

Apples are a great source of fiber – dip them in Greek yogurt with a sprinkle of cinnamon for a tasty, high-protein snack.

Beetroot is one of the richest sources of antioxidants and naturally occurring nitrates – drink beetroot juice for all the healthy goodness.

Brussels spouts are high in fiber and carotenoids for healthy vision – sauté with cranberries and a little olive oil for a warm winter dish.

Grapefruit

Pomegranates

Spinach

1 medium grapefruit has 52 calories, 0.2 grams of fat and 13 grams of carbs

½ cup has 72 calories, 1 gram of fat and 16 grams of carbs

1 cup has 7 calories, 0.1 gram of fat and 1.1 grams of carbs

Grapefruit is a favorite of dieters because it’s filling but doesn’t contain a lot of sugar – serve in a spinach salad with pine nuts and goat cheese.

Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants and can help lower blood pressure – toss the arils in salads or eat them plain!

Spinach is often praised for its folic acid content and anti-cancer agents – use in salads or sauté with eggs for a hearty morning meal.

Four ways to

“Winter-ize” your wardrobe You don’t have to put away your favorite pieces of clothing just because the seasons are changing and the temperature is dropping. “Winter-izing” your wardrobe is a must for fashionistas on a budget. Plus, it’s completely encouraged by top stylists and is easier to do than you think. Simply following these four winterizing rules to save on your seasonal shopping trips. Rule No. 1: Wear Maxi Dresses Year Round

Rule No. 2: Wear White

Because these floor skimming dresses cover your legs, maxi dresses can be worn year round. In order to winterize this piece of apparel, slip on a pair of tights, thigh-high leather boots, and add a fitted cardigan to cover up and keep warm. You can add a soft infinity scarf in a seasonal color (hunter green, oxblood, mink grey) to cover up your chest and décolletage area if your maxi dress exposes a lot of skin.

You can look white hot when wearing winter white tones. It is no longer taboo to wear this hue after Labor Day so don’t put your light toned tops and bottoms away. In order to winterize your whites, especially around the holidays, pair them with gold or silver accents, some sequins, or embrace the black and white color block trend to look sleek and chic at your holiday festivities.

18 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

By Heather Aulisio

Rule No. 3: Balance Ballet Flats Ballet flats can be worn year round. Many ladies believe that they need to be put away for winter because it’s too cold to expose any part of their feet. Think again! You can balance ballet flats in your wardrobe by pairing them with colored tights. Be sure to pair together two contrasting yet complementary colors or prints together. Snakeskin flats and mustard yellow tights make a striking color combination, as does a basic black pair of flats and a smoke grey pair of tights. You can wear them underneath jeans, trousers, dresses and even a pair of shorts for any occasion.

Rule No. 4: You Can Do Sleeveless If you have a favorite sleeveless tank, dress or vest, simply layer a long-sleeved tee underneath. These layers instantly update your look and keep you warm and looking stylish across the seasons. If you don’t want the additional bulk underneath your fitted tanks and tees, consider slipping on your favorite basic black blazer or a cozy cardigan over top. These are four easy rules to follow that will allow you to make the most out of your current wardrobe items.

Give me chastity and continence, but not yet. Saint Augustine

When scouring the internet, it’s nearly impossible to tell whether pants will fit or shoes will hurt. It’s difficult to know if shirts will be see-through, if jackets will itch or if pastel-colored scarves are actually highlighter yellow. So, how can you shop the net without all the worry and doubt?

Shop

Smart By Kat Freestone

Online shopping is convenient. It opens the doors to millions of options you can’t find in stores. It allows you to browse an endless array of designer handbags, chic accessories and fun new fashions without spending on gas, fighting the crowds or exhausting your energy. And yet, for all its ups, online shopping has one, major downfall – it’s unpredictable.

Use Size Calculators

Read Reviews

This essential online shopping tool is too often overlooked. Most clothing websites include a size calculator that allows you to measure your body’s dimensions in order to determine the correct fit. Just remember, clothing sizes aren’t uniform; you may be a size 6 in one store, but a size 10 in another. When in doubt, it’s always best to check your measurements.

To avoid disappointment, it’s always a good idea to read online reviews. Are those boots you’ve been eyeing actually brown when they appear black? Does that shirt’s color fade after a single wash? Chances are, you aren’t the only one wondering. These kinds of questions can be found on online forums and are a great guidance tool.

Shop What You Know

Check the Return Policy

When shopping online, it’s safest to stick with stores you’ve been to in person. This way, as you scan the items and pick your purchases, you’ll be armed with your exact size and knowledge of the clothing’s quality. Best of all, you’ll be able to spot the best deals quickly without wasting time clicking picture after picture.

Before you hit “place your order, it’s a good idea to check out the website’s return policy. After how many days will they no longer accept returns? Do you have to pay the return shipping and handling? If you’re on the fence about a certain item, a store’s return policy can help you make the final call.

Carving Out Quality

Family Time If your family is like the average family today, life revolves around jobs, shuttling kids to school, homework, sports practice, dance class, volunteering, and more. Before you know it, life becomes a whirlwind of to-do lists and obligations. Yet within the craziness of life, we still need to carve out dedicated family time — time to slow down and bond. Going on vacation is a great way to reconnect, but for many families it’s not always feasible due to scheduling and financial constraints. The good news is that quality family time does not have to mean packing suitcases, clearing a week from your calendar, or spending a lot of money. It can be pulled together with a few things from around the house or an afternoon trip to a fun destination near your home. Here are 8 ideas for quality family time that will create a lifetime of memories: 1. Winter Family Fun. Grab your sleds and hit the hills! Going sledding with your kids is one of the easiest ways to garner belly laughs, fresh air and exercise. The best part is you can usually find good sledding hills close to home or at a nearby golf course for free. Even a hike on a nearby trail offers new insight when it’s snow covered. And if you don’t live in a snowy climate, ice skating is also a great family 12 Flourish Magazine | February/2014

activity and most cities offer both indoor and outdoor skating rinks with ice skate rentals. 2. Family Game & Movie Night. When was the last time your family busted out Sorry, UNO or Candy Land? Family game night is a lot of fun and is a totally “unplugged” activity. Change it up a bit and swap out game night for family movie night. Pick a good family movie from Netflix, Redbox or introduce your kids to one of your favorites from youth. As a family, take turns picking the game or movie. Pop some popcorn, make ice cream sundaes or hot chocolate and snuggle up for a night in. 3. The Family Garden. A family garden offers so many benefits. It brings the whole family together to accomplish a united goal and creates a project that lasts from spring to fall. You’ll be surprised at how much your kids love to garden (what kid doesn’t love to play in the dirt?). All you need is a small space in your yard, a few basic gardening tools, seeds, and water. Don’t worry, novices are encouraged — no green thumb is required! Not sure where to start? Sit down as a family to plan out the garden. Let each family member pick something they’d like to grow – and go to the library and do some online research together

to figure out how and when to plant each item. Your kids will learn firsthand how their food is grown and you’ll probably notice them eating more fresh fruit and vegetables when they’ve had a part in growing them. Seeing a garden go from seeds to harvest is a wonderful thing! 4. The Crafty Family. Crafting can be a lot of fun for the whole family! Get together and vote on a project. If you need some inspiration, browse Pinterest for ideas. Give a piece of furniture a makeover with some paint and Modge Podge, use canvases to create art for the family room wall or work together to make handmade gifts for grandparents. You can also create a challenge by only using items from around the house or making robots or cars from items in the recycling bin. It doesn’t matter what you make, just work together to create something unique and have fun doing it. 5. The Family Olympics. Got a WII or X-box Kinect? Maybe a ping pong table or Twister? It’s time for Family Olympics! Organize several different games that family members can compete in from X-box bowling to Charades. You can even create teams if your family is big

If a man does his best, what else is there?. General George S. Patton

enough. Invite another family over for a family vs. family competition or kids vs. parents. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures to document your Olympic achievements! 6. Cooking Up Family Memories. The kitchen is typically the hub of the home, so organize a family dinner party. Put on some music, give everyone a job (younger children can wash vegetables and add ingredients to the bowl) and make cooking the meal a family event. You can put your own spin on dinner by choosing a theme such as “potluck” where everyone selects their own recipe and the family cooks it together, or an “around the world” theme where you choose a country and make recipes from that country. Compiling recipes and making a family cookbook with photos of your family meals is also a wonderful gift to give to your children. 7. Welcome to Camp Family. You don’t have to be a Boy Scout or have the outdoor survival skills of Bear Grylls to be a camper. Camping can be a very basic adventure that your kids are guaranteed to enjoy. The best part is that it completely removes you from your typical day-to-day life. An overflowing laundry pile

can’t beckon you as easily from the lake! Find a state park or lake near your home. A camp spot is typically under $20. Borrow a tent or pick up a used one from craigslist. Plan a couple of meals you can cook over the grill or campfire (like hot dogs, scrambled eggs, popcorn, etc.). Pack up your car with sleeping bags, flashlights, and bug spray. Don’t forget your best “back to nature” attitude. Check here for a list of basic camping necessities. 8. Take a Family Staycation. Treat it like a real vacation. Make a big deal out of it! In fact, a short trip can be a lot less stressful for the whole family, especially younger children. Is there a place near your home you’ve always wanted to visit? A historical spot with an opportunity for learning? Maybe book a night in a local hotel with a pool and enjoy a night away with the kids. It doesn’t have to be over-the-top, just a change of scenery with some fun and relaxation for everyone.

Political correctness is tyranny with manners. Charlton Heston

In the end, just remember it doesn’t really matter what activities you plan for your family as long as you’re making time for ‘togetherness’. You don’t need a lot of money or time away to have fun. The bills will wait, the laundry will get done eventually, and don’t forget to put down your iPhone. Take the time to have fun and enjoy your kids while you can! Revive your

Love Life

14 Celebrity-Inspired Tips By Lori Bizzoco for CupidsPulse.com

As with every new year, there comes the ritualistic list of resolutions: Lose weight, stop smoking, save money, buy a house, etc. Instead of the same old, self-promises, why not resolve to making things better for you and that special someone in 2014? Whether you’re single or in a relationship that needs reinvigorating, now is the time to focus on improving your love life. Who knows, if you begin now, you may be celebrating with someone new this coming Valentine’s Day! To get you started, here are 14 tips inspired by your favorite celebrities: 1. Jennifer Garner accepts Ben Affleck for who he is and doesn’t try to change his quirky personality or make him give up his vintage arcade games, motorbikes and poker nights. Men love women who let them be themselves. Accept your man for who he is, and if you can’t, then maybe it’s time to let him go. 2. Will Smith married his best friend, Jada Pinkett Smith, noting on many occasions that you need to check your insecurities and be yourself around your partner. Great advice! Find someone you feel comfortable being around. After all, it’s hard to maintain a relationship when you feel like you can’t be your true self. 3. Beyoncé Knowles knows that being confident in who you are is very important in a relationship. Having self-assurance allows you to better share yourself with your partner – nothing is sexier than feeling good in your own skin. 4. When Glamour asked Jennifer Aniston for love advice, she said, “Why does the romance leave relationships? I think it’s laziness. I really do. I think a good relationship is about collaboration. That’s the way to go in a relationship.” If you feel the same, stop logging wasted hours on Facebook and start putting more time into your man to keep the love flowing. 5. Don’t be your own personal paparazzi and broadcast your relationship all over the Internet. Ryan Reynolds kept his relationship with Blake Lively hush hush, and now the happy couple are married. 6. Taylor Swift is infamous for moving quickly, but she was moving at ludicrous speed when she was dating Conor Kennedy and decided to buy a house across the street from his family home in Rhode Island, only to break up shortly after … awkward. Don’t move too fast and

force the rhythm of the relationship. Let it move at a natural speed. 7. Guys don’t want to be told they’re cute; men want to hear they look like James Bond, claims Ashton Kutcher. Wowing your date with a compliment only takes two minutes, but it could have him hooked on you until the next millenium! 8. Channing Tatum pays attention to the details so he can be in tune with wife Jenna Dewan. As soon as she wakes up, he knows from her expressions if she had a bad dream or is in a good mood. Watch for body language cues and actions to better understand and connect with your partner. Sometimes it’s not in what they say, but in what they do. 9. Emma Stone loves that Andrew Garfield constantly goofs around with her. Be fearless and make your man laugh without worrying about looking silly or like the fool. 10. Jay-Z shows his compassion and attraction to his wife BeyoncÊ by sharing

playful little touches. Sit next to your sweetie so your legs or shoulders barely touch, or reach out and place your hand on his arm for a flirty move that lets him know he’s on your mind. 11. Brad Pitt was quoted saying, “Do you know how you tell real love? It’s when someone else’s interest trumps your own. I like to put it that way: Trumps your own. Love of somebody else becomes the most important, most worthwhile thing in your life. Measure your own feelings in a relationship. Are you willing to go out of your way for your partner and put their interests first? 12. Justin Timberlake almost let Jessica Biel get away, but he got smart, won her back and made things official! Before you lose someone you love, make sure you know the difference between fear of committing and fear of being with the completely wrong person. 13. Reese Witherspoon candidly revealed to Elle she follows Shakespeare’s advice to love fully and with all your heart, like Romeo and Juliet, because you always gain from love. Put

your whole heart into it; even if it gets broken, at least you won’t be constantly wishing and thinking “what if?â€? 14. The best way to get affection is to show it. Katharine McPhee told Men’s Health she exemplifies what she wants to receive from her man, like being appreciative and looking him in the eye. Revamp your relationship in 2014 by following these stars’ outlook and make it a happy, love-filled year! Getting Back Into the

Dating Game

What’s Changed for 2014 By Katie M. Moss

Maybe you’ve been out of the dating game for awhile. Whether you’re recently divorced or exiting a long-term relationship, it’s important to realize that elements of dating have changed exponentially over the past decade, even over the past five years. Here are some tips to get you back on track.

It’s Not Always Prudent to Play Hard to Get It’s now acceptable for a women to ask a man out or to approach him first. In fact, some men may even expect this kind of behavior. If you have a wonderful date with a man, it’s perfectly fine to text him the next day and tell him so. It’s far less formal than calling him, and it shows that you’re interested.

Chivalry Looks a Bit Different Some men are still interested in pulling out chairs and holding doors for women, but a man may not pick you up at your door – especially if you met online. It’s simply not safe to share your address with a stranger, and you probably won’t want to get in a car with him, either. Men are still expected to pay on a date if he is the one to set it up. However, it’s always polite for a woman to ask to split the bill. Don’t hesitate to keep your specific relationship values in mind, though. If you believe a man should pay on the first date, don’t accept anything less.

online presence than others, but most people are a part of at least one online community these days. If you really don’t know someone, Google is a great source for finding out more. See a red flag? Back out of the date quickly and gracefully. Though you may know a lot about a person from his or her online presence, it’s not a good idea to insert all the facts you’ve learned in a real-life conversation. This will prevent organic talk and, frankly, it can seem a bit creepy. If he does bring up something you have learned online and it’s amusing, you can use the snippet to break the ice.

Texting has All but Replaced Phone Calls Texting may be more impersonal than telephone calls, but it’s a great way to easily set up dates, flirt between dates and have quick conversations when you don’t have time to place a call. However, you should really get to know someone in person. It’s difficult to determine emotions and verbal inflections via text. Serious conversations should be saved for face-to-face interactions.

array of women online, as they’re likely to have more confidence and feel more at ease e-mailing a woman as opposed to calling her or asking her out in person. There are many sites to choose from, so men have more choices than ever. If you’re dating a man for a while and his profile is still active, consider asking him what’s holding him back from taking it down. Of course, he’ll expect you to do the same.

Online Dating and Texting Remove Personal Filters Many people now feel more comfortable sharing their innermost thoughts and fantasies due to the fact that texting and online conversations are so much more impersonal. Many men feel comfortable talking about sex even before meeting women. Go with your gut in these situations. If someone is coming on too strong, he probably isn’t looking for anything more than a one-night stand. Don’t get in too deep.

Dating may have changed in the past few years, but if you put your best self out there, With so much transparency online and you’re sure to find love again. And, thankfully, across social media sites, chances are that today it’s even easier than ever to search a you’ll know a lot about a person’s life before It’s Easy for Guys to broad range of available singles, thanks to you ever go out on a date. Love Is Good By Sarah G. Mason

Sometime around the first week in February, one of two things happens: I hear women gossip excitedly about their upcoming Valentine’s Day plans, or I hear women moan despondently about Singles Awareness Day. No matter whether you’re single, married, recently split, crushing, divorced or head-over-heels, there’s one fact to get straight: Love is good for you. Regardless of whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or Singles Awareness Day, this is a month to enjoy because love makes us happier and healthier. (Yes, it really does!) Intimacy has been proven to lower blood pressure, enhance your mood by releasing endorphins, help you sleep and soothe aches and pains. Kissing, holding hands, even just looking at someone you love can release the “love hormone” oxytocin, which works to inhibit the stress hormone cortisol. In fact, some research finds that just feeling the emotional support of a partner is enough to do the trick. 6

Flourish Magazine | February/2014

Before you begin to envy your happily married friends, you should know that this is not exclusive to love between romantic couples. Close friendships with loving friends have the same stress-reducing, blood pressure-lowering effect, according to a 2010 study published in the Journal of Psychology and Aging. In fact, those with close friends were found to have an average systolic blood pressure that’s 14.4 points less than their lonely counterparts. Speaking of loneliness, has the cold weather given you the winter blues? During this time of year, many suffer from seasonal affective disorder – depression during the winter. As if the cold and flu season wasn’t enough! Luckily, love can ward off both. To start, the stress-suppressing powers of oxytocin can boost immunity. In addition, couples in love visit the doctor less frequently for cold and flu symptoms, according to a study by Wilkes University. As for depression, a recent study published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior found that married subjects score an average of 3.42 points

lower on an 84-point depression scale than unmarried subjects, and that simply living with your significant other can reduce your risk of mental health issues. Lucky for us that Valentine’s Day falls at the end of winter! For all you singletons, don’t let these statistics get you down. The benefits of being emotionally close to family are similar. Just like love can ward off illness, spending some quality time talking to Mom has the same effect, according to a 2010 study conducted by the University of WisconsinMadison. In addition, having strong family ties creates emotional support and a sense of belonging, and can influence your lifestyle habits for the better. If you find yourself alone this Valentine’s Day, just remember the power of familial love.

Flourish Magazine’s

Fire & Ice

First Annual

December 31, 2013 – For some, living in Florida is a luxury – no snow, no ice, no problem. For kids, on the other hand, sledding down icy slopes and throwing snow balls sounds like a dream come true. At Flourish Magazine’s first annual Fire & Ice festival, that dream became a reality.

The event was held at Northwood Family YMCA’s fields as a fundraiser for the YMCA and the Weekend Hunger Backpack Program of Catholic Charities.

For the kids, a major draw was the Ice Slides and Snow Pits from Gainesville Ice. The event featured games like Laser Tag and Angry Birds, bounce houses from Bouncin’ Big, face-painting and tattoos, vendor games and a large-scale Hamster Ball. The Gainesville Police Department’s horse unit attended, and the the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office helicopter came in for a surprise landing. Princesses and Spiderman made an afternoon appearance for photos with the kids. At dusk, the “Fire” in “Fire & Ice” was honored with a spectacular fireworks display. When asked how this event came about, Marc and Lauren Douglass of Flourish Magazine answered, “We wanted to bring something new and fun to Gainesville, something that allowed families to celebrate the New Year together. Fundraising and community awareness has always been a large part of our family, so it was a natural step for us to include

these charities. We had great partnerships from community and business members in support of this fundraiser, so it really was a great way for Gainesville to come together.” In total, this sold out event raised 6,000 cans of food, which will be put to good use by the Weekend Hunger Backpack Program of Catholic Charities. This program provides for food-insecure children who need nutritional assistance over the weekend. In addition, money was raised for the YMCA to assist with their at-risk afterschool program that helps children learn leadership and selfconfidence skills. “In addition, we would really like to thank everyone involved, from our sponsors to the volunteers. We could not have done this without you,” said Marc Douglass. “Thank you to everyone who attended and who brought food to feed our community’s children. We hope to see you next year!”
