The crystal clear headwaters of Silver Springs once hosted Florida’s most treasured theme park in the days before Disney. Now, nearly a half a century later, rediscovered remnants of former glory days mark the park’s steady rise into a renewed, natural resort.

By Elizabeth Putfark

Fine Future Crystalizes at

Silver Springs On Nov. 22, 2014, the Silver Springs Professional Dive Team made its inaugural dive into the translucent waters at the start of the Silver River. Their goal, besides enjoying the view, was to clean and restore three large statues resting at the bottom of the springs – abandoned props from a 1960’s episode of hit TV series, “I Spy.” The formidable statues, covered in half a century’s worth of algae, were not the only antiques to merit attention; divers also put their stiff brushes and pressure washers to work clearing the bottoms of the famous glass-bottom boats – formerly one of the park’s greatest attractions. As early as the mid-19th century, Silver Springs occupied a chief spot in the popular imagination as a vacationer’s paradise. 8

Flourish Magazine | April/2015

Surviving postcards boast of crystal clear waters and abundant aquatic life – delights enjoyed by Victorian tourists who viewed them from tourist-filled shores and through the glass bottoms of the park’s tour boats. Although already an attraction of note, Silver Springs reached its zenith in popularity following World War II. In Silver Springs: The Underwater Photographs of Bruce Mozert, Gary Monroe explains that as Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway snaked its way south through the Sunshine State, tourists who formerly trickled in by steamer began to arrive in droves, parking their vans, buses and cars all along the Silver River. The park’s primary draw was simple: the 99 percent pure water that offered wide-eyed

visitors a clear and close-up look at colorful fish and submerged landscapes. Yet as the park garnered more national attention, it upped its scale of operation, too. A Jungle Cruise was added along the Silver River (dotted with monkeys shipped in from Southeast Asia), a Shrine of the Water Gods erected and a Life of Jesus Christ diorama spread across seven small chapels. There was also a Deer Ranch and a Santa’s Land, as well as an elaborate greenhouse. Whatever their fancy, 20th century tourists were sure to find it at the Silver Springs resort. Before long, Hollywood directors were packing up their crews for filming in the translucent waters, decorated by fish and a jungle of swaying eelgrass. The popular

Unfortunately, the growth inspired by the springs’ natural beauty led to its unnatural demise. Runoff from shoreline attractions and nearby fertilized fields introduced chemicals into the once-pure water, killing off the fish and plant life. Soon the waters were murky, Disney was open for business and the newly built interstate system zoomed tourists past Silver Springs without pause.

Information on the dive and restoration project found at the Ocala Star Banner: www.ocala.com/article/20141123/ articles/141129880.

The resort had mostly closed its doors until 1999, when the Silver Springs Basin Working Group was formed in order to breathe new life into the ailing attraction. The Working Group pushed an initiative to acquire a 4400-acre parcel north of Silver Springs to prevent runoff, then set to work restoring the natural habitat. Their efforts sparked a rejuvenation project that culminated in the historic spring’s reopening as Silver Spring’s State Park in the October 2014. Current park management has replaced some of the more gimmicky former attractions with small-footprint activities, like kayaking and guided tours, and now attracts families from around the country and state who want to experience Florida’s natural beauty. With the glass-bottom boats back in commission, the waters regaining their former purity and a few pieces of Hollywood glamour left behind, Silver Springs offers modern visitors a glimpse of the past, a delight in the present and a promise for the future. Gators Focused On National Title Repeat after Rolling Unbeaten Through Preseason Play

Goal By Mike Capshaw Photos by Jim Burgess

Rotating pitchers gives Walton and Co. a unique way to attack opponents. Instead of throwing one ace for all three games of a weekend series, UF can keeps batters off balance with dozens of different fastballs, sinkers, rise balls and whatever else the trio introduces from their arsenal. “We really try to figure out the best matchups and give us the best opportunity to win, not only every game, but every series along the way,” Walton said.

The Gators are strong in all three facets: pitching, hitting and defense. They tuned everything together during a tougher-than-usual preseason schedule, but SEC play always proves toughest. Fortunately, the team leader is a senior and opening series against then-No. 3 LSU arguably the most valuable softball at home. Despite how superbly last player to any team in the entire season’s team performed when they country. Haeger stars as a pitcher, won the Women’s College World posting a team-best 11-0 record, 0.59 Series, fans filling Katie Seashole Pressly ERA and 85 strikeouts through 59 Stadium may be witnessing the most innings, but also is a beast at-bat with complete UF softball squad ever. a team-high nine homers and 34 RBI to go along with a .380 batting For starters, there are three pitchers, all starters, who could start for any SEC team. Senior Lauren Haeger, sophomore Delanie Gourley and freshman Aleshia Ocasio sported a 5 — Wins vs. ranked teams combined 0.76 ERA. They’ve allowed 10 — Mercy-rule victories six homers combined, while UF had 12 — Shutouts four batters – Haeger (9), Bailey Castro 28 — Runs scored by opponents (7), Taylore Fuller (6) and Kristi Merrit 212 — Runs scored by Florida (6) – with six or more home runs. Chiefland High alum Taylore Fuller has helped power the offense while filling a hole at third base and also starting catcher.

Perfection. It’s not as much about the pursuit as the end result for Florida’s softball team. The defending national champs posted a 27-0 mark in preseason play, beating the then No. 2 and No. 3 teams along the way. Sure, the Gators are perfect heading into SEC play but remaining perfect is not what this team is striving for. “The most important ranking is the one at the end,” UF coach Tim Walton said before the season. average. She owns UF’s RBI record and will continue to add to it this season while closing in on the school’s career home run record. “She’s a first-round draft pick if she’s a baseball player. She’s taken as a top-10 pick,â€? Walton said. “She can pitch, she can hit, she can run ‌ she’s done everything we expected out of her and we really expected a lot out of her at a young age.â€? Offensively, seven of Florida’s regulars were batting .310 or higher at press time for this issue. Junior second baseman Kelsey Stewart batted .379 with a team-high 11 doubles, three triples, 12 stolen bases and 29 runs through 27 starts. She set the team record for triples and stolen bases earlier this season. Castro (.368, six homers, 26 runs), Schwarz (.348, 4 stolen bases), Fuller (.317, 6 homers, 25 RBI) and Kristi Merritt (.310, 6 homers, 21 RBI) fuel the lineup. Below: Senior Lauren Haeger leads the Gators as a pitcher and hitter and is arguably the most valuable player in the country

“Whoever we play, it doesn’t matter what the team name is or what they’re ranking is, or how many wins they have, we just go out and play our brand of softball and with that comes a lot of cool things, Walton said. Defense has been solid as well with a .973 fielding percentage and just 18 errors as compared to opponents with a .935 and 44. Regardless of the final record, the Gators repeating a national championship would equal a perfect season. “The one main thing that we’re really trying to do is get that team striving together, one common goal, one team, Walton said. “Just really working hard individually and kind of of bringing them together collectively. Above: Coach Tim Walton has built a national powerhouse at Florida and may have one of his most talented teams this season.

Whatever preconceived notions you have about dance, get ready to throw them out the window – there’s a new way to ballet, and its home is here in Gainesville.

“This is what we feel like is our first goal and priority – to be here for the community,” says artistic director and co-founder of Danscompany, Nina Cameron. “Our second goal is to give the dancers the opportunity to dance on a semi-professional level. It’s also very affordable. If you’ve got the time and talent, you can be involved.

Catholic Charities Gala 2015 Each year Catholic Charities holds their engaging gala to raise awareness and funds for their unique programs that benefit the Gainesville areas. This year, the Flourish Children's Foundation was honored to present The Weekend Hunger Backpack program with a donation from the 2014 Fire and Ice Festival. Hunger can happen to anyone. Most people assume that hunger is a

problem faced only by those living in poverty, but people living above the poverty line, especially children and the elderly, are often at risk of hunger, too. Romance wasn’t the only amore in the Alachua air on February 14th this year. At the Paramount Plaza Hotel and Suites, film fans and environmental enthusiasts gathered to celebrate a different kind of love: a passion for sustainability.

By Elizabeth Putfark

Local nonprofit celebrates sustainability with three days of film, dialogue and fun

The sixth annual three-day Cinema Verde Festival offered audiences the chance to experience 40 different short and full-length films focused on sustainability and environmental issues. Question and answer sessions with directors and producers followed several films. With topics ranging from food chains and climate change to tar sands and female war veterans, there was no shortage of topics of interest to the local Gainesville community. Yet this wasn’t what you might imagine as an environmentalist retreat: a gathering of academic types, intent on straightening their glasses and hugging trees. These were ordinary people who enjoy quality film, art, live music and a good time. And for Cinema Verde’s founder, Trish Riley, that’s exactly the point. Around seven years ago, Riley discovered something lacking in her work as an environmental journalist and author. “After 20-some years in the field, I suddenly thought, ‘Nobody is going to read these books or articles unless they’re already interested – they’re not even going to pick them up!’ That’s how I evolved to start showcasing environmental films.” The annual event showcases more than films – it also brings together musicians, artisans and local nonprofits looking to raise awareness about Gainesville’s ecological impact and responsibilities through their work.

“We should never politicize the environment. Becoming more sustainable is beneficial to everyone on the planet – all people, all animals and all plants.” Don’t let it end like this. Tell them I said something. Pancho Villa

“What I wanted was to appeal to people who wouldn’t pick up the books. To do that, I try to make environmentalism as appealing as possible; in fact, I try to make a real glam party out of the whole ordeal!” And she doesn’t do it alone. Other than Trish, the entire operation is run by volunteers, who Trish calls the “lifeblood” of the organization. Caitlyn Anderson is a student at the University of Florida who became involved in the nonprofit’s work this year. “I’m actually doing this as an internship for credit for business school at UF, and I’m really enjoying it!” Thanks to Cinema Verde’s proximity 24 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

experience is definitely going to guide me in how I choose a career,” Anderson claims. Although Riley hopes to one day be able to pay her volunteers for their efforts, in the meantime Cinema Verde’s appeal to youth is far from accidental. “Young people are the future,” explains Mike Confino, a graduate student at UF. “Obviously this

is something that’s important to all ages, but you figure the younger you get people interested, the more it really becomes a part of them. Get them to see the importance of an issue, they start to base their life on it. They start to think about how their actions affect the world around them, instead of how their actions affect just them.” With just that end in mind, Riley strives to take environmental issues outside of their traditional location in college classrooms and partisan political debate and back where they belong – among everyday people whose lives and loved ones are directly impacted by the health of the planet. “The negativity surrounding environmentalism is born from marketing dens,” Riley argues, “from seeds that were placed in the lexicon by companies that benefit from polluting. That’s where the name ‘ecoterrorists’ came from and the stigma against environmental issues began.

The right to swing my fist ends where the other man’s nose begins. Oliver Wendell Holmes

“And that’s a shame. Because we should never politicize the environment. Becoming more sustainable is beneficial to everyone on the planet – all people, all animals and all plants.” Not every film that applies to be showcased by Cinema Verde makes it to the screen. Riley vets each film carefully before sending it out before her viewers. “Because I’ve studied the issues so long, I’m pretty well apprised of the situations,” Riley explains, “so I can quickly see the difference between someone who’s trying to sell something and someone who knows what they’re talking about. So first and foremost, I’m interested in scientific validity.”

experts and directors there who can then take the story and the conversation further.” After six years building the foundation, Riley is ready for the next stage of growth in Cinema Verde’s life – a stage that will require help and support from our local community. “We know what we need to do, we know how to do it, now it’s got to get funded. We’re looking for major benefactors and a good venue – we want a place to call home!”

At the start, Riley held regular saloon gatherings at a local theatre where people could relax, have fun and talk about the issues, all before and after viewing a Cinema Verde Film. After From there, Riley looks for films that losing access to the theatre a couple focus on problems that rarely hit the years ago and continuing to grow in limelight. Providing fresh takes on issues the meantime, her search for a more of sustainability is, after all, part of what permanent location has now begun will help draw more audiences in and in earnest. push conversations to their next stage. But one thing’s for certain – wherever Cinema Verde ends up, it will be within the Gainesville community.

So what’s the end goal of Cinema Verde? “To raise awareness of environmental concern and bring people together to develop and implement sustainable solutions,” Riley explains. “We’d like to see many, many more people come out next year, and we’d like to host in our own home!” To find out more about Cinema Verde’s films and events and to see how your company, family or business can get involved, visit cinemaverde.org. Next year’s event location and date is TBD, so now is a great time to get involved.

T. Rex

Named Sue

at the Florida Museum of Natural History The biggest attraction in Gainesville this year might be the oldest one, too. The largest and most complete skeleton of a T. Rex ever found now occupies center stage at the Florida Museum of Natural History, where she’ll stand until Sept 13 of this year. Named after the archeologist who unearthed her in 2010, the astounding 42-foot long, 13-foot high reconstructed and preserved dinosaur skeleton goes by the simple name of Sue. Her impressive figure towers over museum visitors on their way to the extensive interactive exhibit she inspires. Thanks to separate casts fashioned from the original bone structure, guests can touch, feel and experiment with various parts of Sue’s skeleton, discovering firsthand how she moved, ate and lived during the Cretaceous period. Kids can sort through the dig pit for fossils and clues to help you family piece together the remarkable history of this legendary beast. To get the whole story, browse through the various news articles and photos from Sue’s initial uncovering. Learn more about how the Tyrant Lizard King rose to its contemporary iconic status and about what the world would have looked like through the eyes of the enormous creatures when they still patrolled the earth. So the next time you have a free afternoon with the kids, take a trip back in time and forward in science at the T. Rex Named Sue exhibit. Sue is in high demand around the country, so there’s no telling when she’ll migrate south again!

Alligator Snapping

Turtle If you’ve ever looked across the Suwannee River and thought you saw a living dinosaur, then you’re likely one of the lucky few to spot an Alligator Snapping Turtle. These prehistoric-looking reptiles are the heaviest freshwater turtles in the world, and they’re only found in select rivers in the southeastern United States. The “dinosaur of the turtle world” Alligator Snapping Turtles have spiked shells, scaly tales and treacherous beaklike jaws that set them apart from their milder brethren. Males measure around 26-inches long and weigh an average of 175 pounds, with the largest on record weighing in at 220. Snappers can live as long as 100 years in freshwater rivers, canals and lakes, and only need to surface once every 40 to 50 minutes.

Turtle Trickster Snappers are known for their knavish hunting style. They

nestle their earth-colored shells against the river bottom, then stick out their bright red, worm-shaped tongues. Unsuspecting frogs and fish go in for a nibble and become a snack instead!

Costs to be Cool The unique shell of this Florida native make it popular prey for poachers, who sell alligator snappers to exotic animal traders. Now a threatened species, the alligator snapping turtle lives on only due to the efforts of fish and wildlife conservation committees in the southeast.

Pirate &

Princess Fun Run

Tiaras, tutus and pirate hats went on parade on the last day of February for the annual Pirate & Princess Fun Run presented by Kids4Kids Charities. The 1.5 mile run/walk meandered up and around the North Florida duck pond before depositing lords, ladies and scallywags back at the O2B Kids backyard. After the race, kids were invited to participate in a host of delightful activities, from facepainting and bounce house fun to a prize ceremony for the Best-Dressed Princess and Pirate. Contestants were out for more than a good time. Kids4Kids, which aims to create fun, healthy events for children that will fund efforts to help less fortunate children, asked that each family and competitor bring a food donation to exchange for a raffle ticket. Food and entry fee proceeds went to local children’s charities including the Food4Kids Backpack Program. So keep an eye out for next year’s spring event – this a Gainesville treasure you don’t want to miss! 28 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

NWF’s New Butterfly Hero Campaign Inspires Kids and Families to Save the Iconic Monarch Butterfly

conservation and education organization, is giving away 10,000 Butterfly Heroes Garden kits to help save the monarch butterfly.

NWF’s new Butterfly Hero Campaign, launched March 4, 2015, asks people to submit a photo of themselves making the international sign language sign of the butterfly on NWF’s Butterfly Heroes website, at: www.nwf.org/butterflyheroes. By taking the pledge, participants will be mailed a free kit (while supplies last) and if entered by May 15, are eligible for a chance to win a trip for four to Walt Disney World. Botanical Interests is supporting the campaign with a donation of native milkweed seeds. "We can each be a part of saving the monarch butterfly. The simple act of planting milkweed with your family provides monarchs with a place to lay their eggs and helps ensure this iconic species has a future," said David Mizejewski, naturalist with the National Wildlife Federation. Pollinators, of which the monarch butterfly is a part are mostly responsible for all the food that we eat. While monarchs are found 30 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

across the United States — as recently as 1996 numbering some 1 billion — their numbers have declined by approximately 90 percent in recent years a result of numerous threats, particularly loss of habitat due to agricultural practices, development and cropland conversion. Degradation of wintering habitat in Mexico and California has also had a negative impact on the species. Monarch butterflies spend winter in Mexico or Central and Southern California and then migrate north in spring into neighborhoods across the United States. They need places to rest their wings, drink flower nectar, and lay their eggs on milkweed which their baby caterpillars eat. Monarchs are losing this habitat, and without it the Monarch cannot survive. NWF is asking that people across the United States to plant milkweed to preserve the monarch’s habitat. NWF’s Garden for Wildlife program encourages responsible gardening that helps pollinators and other wildlife thrive. It encourages planting with native species like milkweed and discouraging chemical pesticide use. With nearly 200,000 locations and growing, NWF’s Certified Wildlife Habitats and Community wildlife Habitats recognize individuals, schools, groups and whole communities committed to providing habitat for wildlife, including pollinators. Each of the nearly 200,000 certified locations provides food, water, cover and places to raise young. This makes yards, schools, businesses, faith-based organizations, campuses, parks, farms and other community-based landscapes into wildlife sanctuaries. The brand new Butterfly Heroes Campaign is organized by NWF and is a part of a number of programs designed to inspire people to get outdoors, help wildlife, and become more aware of the nature in their neighborhood and community. NWF has worked to connect people with nature for decades, inspiring people through Ranger Rick magazine, working with educators to get kids greening their schools and learning outdoors.

The Valencia peanuts used for boiling require more labor and a different harvesting procedure than most conventional peanuts. They have to be picked when semi-mature and either immediately shipped or stored in large coolers before going to market. Nonetheless, this Southern delicacy seems well worth the effort, as the boiled peanut market has remained stable despite drops in peanut prices across the state. Body

Shape Up Your Diet

Pamper Yourself

Do you reward your hard work at the gym with a chocolate chip cookie? If so, then it’s time to rethink your weight loss strategy. Losing weight is 70 to 80 percent diet and 20 to 30 percent exercise, meaning that post-workout cookie isn’t your best choice. Start by talking to your doctor about which diet plan is right for you and most importantly, stick to it! Stay away from fad diets, which may work for a week or two but won’t sustain you in the long-run. Cut out processed foods and added sugar and opt for the healthier option of vegetables, nuts, legumes, lean meats and healthy grains. Craving something sweet? Reach for fresh fruit!

A few days before you plan to hit the beach, treat yourself to a pedicure or a facial. When you treat yourself like royalty, you’ll gain confidence about your body. For additional pampering, consider a wax for your trickier spots to get beach-body perfect. Visit a local spa or do it yourself!

Get Sweaty Exercising regularly is vital to maintaining a healthy, happy weight. While some folks don’t like to sweat, you’ll need to push yourself to get your body into beach mode. It’s important to find activities that work for you and your lifestyle; if you don’t enjoy them, you won’t stick with them. Not sure what heart-pumping activity is right for you? Try them all! Sign up for yoga or cycling, or bring the hubby along for weight lifting or kickboxing. A good mix of exercise is optimal for the best results. 42 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

Moisturize and Protect Throughout the year, skin tends to get dry and flaky – something no one wants while bearing their bikini body. Even if your weekend beach trip is several weeks away, start moisturizing now. More importantly, don’t underestimate the power of sunscreen. Although tanning can give you a great glow, be sure to do it safely by reapplying sunscreen and wearing a hat to protect your face. Sunburn doesn’t look good on anyone! As you’re making healthy changes, just remember that trying to achieve the “perfect” body isn’t a realistic goal. Don’t stress. This season is bound to be a blast, so relax, enjoy the beautiful days and learn to love your body as it is. Sometimes it is not enough that we do our best; we must do what is required. Sir Winston Churchill

Why You Should

Lift Weights By Kirsten Nielsen

Stuck in a rut with your workout routine? If you tend to head straight to the treadmills, think about detouring to free weights instead! Lifting weights can be intimidating at first, but you’ll be amazed at the results you’ll see in your tone, weight and overall health.

Weight Loss Goals

Getting That “Toned” Look

Weightlifting can increase your bone density, prevent osteoporosis, fight depression, reduce your risk of a heart attack and lower your risk of diabetes in ways cardio alone simply can’t. While we’re not recommending you drop your running habit (cardio has some great benefits as well), you can keep yourself healthy for years to come by combining both cardio and strength training.

Many women don’t realize that the “toned” look is achieved through increasing muscle definition and decreasing fat. Pure cardio will decrease fat, but will do little for increasing muscle. Don’t worry about getting “huge” through strength training; women don’t have the necessary testosterone to build muscles like men!

That extra muscle you’ll build through strength training will actually help you lose weight! Muscle burns more calories than fat, so you’ll experience an increase in metabolism even when you’re not working out.

Ice Cravings Signal Health Problems Q. I used to crave ice just like a drug addict. The first thing in the morning, I had to have it. I would get a large soft drink and ask for extra ice. I didn't care about the pop – it was the ice I wanted. I went to my doctor for a checkup because I felt tired and would get out of breath easily. My test showed that I was severely anemic, with a blood count of six. My physician was so concerned that he called me at home the next evening and told me not to exert myself in any way until they did further testing. This had happened so gradually that I didn't realize I was slowly bleeding to death. Further tests showed I had an iron deficiency caused by extremely 40 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

It is worth remembering that unusual cravings, whether for ice, cornstarch, clay or even popcorn, can be the result of a mineral deficiency. Anyone who discovers such a craving should ask to have iron or zinc levels tested. Usually, as in your case, correcting the deficiency banishes the craving. This is especially important for children who may be eating paint chips, since their craving could lead to lead poisoning (Australian Family Physician, May 2013).

The doctor prescribed several rounds of antibiotics to clear it up. Now, the person is free of asthma. I would like to discuss this possible treatment with my asthma specialist. Ask any great gardener and they’ll say the same thing: The secret to a good crop is in the soil. And what’s the key to good soil? Preparation. Preparation. Preparation.

Garden for Spring Planting Now is the perfect time to break out your gardening gloves and get to work on your spring and summer patches. With just four easy steps, you will be on your way to nurturing blooming bulbs and a heavy harvest before your seeds even hit the ground!

Step 1: Plan your Patch Whether you’re starting from scratch or reviving sleeping plots, you’ll need a plan of attack before you break the soil. Choose a level spot where plants will get at least six hours of full sun every day. If you’re starting a new plot, look to the grassiest section of your current lawn. Chances are it’s getting the most sun and best drainage in the yard. Next, decide what you’re planting and where. Different plants require different spacing, and some, like potatoes and onions, require extra-deep soil. Map out the dimensions of your space and plan for each row to avoid overcrowding later. Hint: Use string, stakes, a line of powdered lime or collect rocks for a border. 36 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

Prep Your

Step 2: Attack Insurgents Getting rid of weeds before you begin planting saves many a headache later on. Go through by hand, or if you have the time, stake down dark plastic or carpeting over the garden area for several weeks of hot weather. The weeds below will die off and turn to compost. As you go a-weeding, cast out any rocks or large roots that might hinder plant growth to save some time later.

Step 3: Assess the Soil Even if you’re ready to work, your soil might not be. If the ground is soggy or semi-frozen from winter, digging too early can harm the soil’s structure. To find out if your land is ready to till, grab a handful of dirt after a day of dry weather and squeeze. It should fall apart in your palm, not compact into a ball. Almost all soil benefits form adding organic material, but if you want to know the exact deficiencies you can send it to a soil-testing lab for nutrient and pH analysis. The results will tell you exactly what minerals your soil lacks.

Step 4: Get your Hands Dirty – Real Dirty! Once the plot is planned, the weeds gone and the soil ready, it’s time to get down, dirty and loose. Turning the dirt in your patch with a fork or spade aerates the soil while also softening the path for young roots. You want to loosen the top six to eight inches of ground in the majority of your garden, and the top foot or more for root vegetables. Add organic material in a one to one ratio with the soil. Organic material can include compost (homemade or store bought), aged horse manure, dried and shredded leaves, dehydrated cow manure or a mixture of all of these. Work the materials into the entire loosened area, and expect to add more every year to keep your garden healthy. The earlier you ready your plot, the more time the soil has to balance before planting. Sowing day will be a breeze with careful preparation in the early months of spring! Dinner Party Trivia

Remember when a dinner with friends and acquaintances was something you looked forward to all week long? Yet the older we get, the more those casual gatherings start to feel like a burden, and too often, a bore. Rejuvenate a dreaded supper club gathering or obligatory meal with a fun and easy game that all personality types can enjoy. Your guests will appreciate the time you took preparing, and your spouse will thank you for making the evening go by a little bit faster, and a lot more pleasantly!

The best part about trivia is how shockingly simple it is; all you need is a set of multiple choice questions, and pen and paper for all contestants. Pick a theme that suits your party’s interests – such as sports, local history or celebrity gossip – or have a “High School Recap” round that quizzes competitors on facts they almost remember but have mostly forgotten. Even your quietest quests will feel at ease playing this introvert’s favorite!

Who am I?

This will work great for popculture fans or cultural aesthetes. Springtime Spruces for the Home

Outside nature is coming to life, so why not rejuvenate your home as well? These 10 budget-friendly tips will help you revamp your living spaces in springtime style.

Utilize a splash of citrus Pick up some citrus colored vases, rugs and throw pillows from your local thrift store or flea market to give your living room an energetic boost.

Brighten a room with color Pick a room that’s feeling drab, like a dining room, an office or kitchen, and get a little wild by painting it bright and bold color, like yellow, pink or azure blue. With a new accent rug and window treatments, it’ll feel like a new room in no time! 34 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

Use fruit to accent the kitchen Get creative with fruit in the kitchen by incorporating it into your décor. Bowls of apples and pears offer a healthy, stylish addition to any room.

Create Movement with Sheer Panels Replace heavy winter drapes with sheer panels. They’ll add movement and light to your living space while still offering privacy at night.

Add color to unlikely places Stash a secret pop of color somewhere that will add interest without taking over the room. Paint the interior of white kitchen cabinets or closets with a spring green or sky blue.

Go green with your centerpieces Even if all your buds aren’t out, arrange some fern leaves or other yard accents in an oversized vase for a festive, natural look.

Bring the beach home Go for a beachy twist with natural fiber rugs, nautical lamps and stripes in a guest bedroom or bathroom.

Texturize your bathroom Mix it up in a white bathroom with unusual textures. Swiss dotted valences, antique mirrors, mosaic tile and waffle weave towels will all contribute to pearly luxury.

Cool down with hardwood Start your rejuvenation at the ground level by replacing the carpet in your living room with all wooden floors. The space will immediately take on a fresher, cooler vibe, which you can set off with indoor plants and neutral tones.

Take on your patio Bright pinks and blues look great against a backdrop of lush spring green. Well done is better than well said. Benjamin Franklin

In all of these cases, community awareness is the most important part of our mission. Inspiring Lives It’s common to think of adoption, foster care and child protective services as someone else’s problem. Yet with over 40 children in our community right now looking for permanent, adoptive homes, Gainesville has the unique opportunity to serve children in need in their own Alachua County. Children’s Home Society of Florida offers both a haven and a helping hand to children and families in need of support. Here, Executive Director Jennifer Anchors shares more about the unique work CHS performs in the community and how local individuals, families and businesses can get involved.

Tell me about the Children’s Home Society of Florida. What does it do in the community? Children's Home Society of Florida’s mission is “Embracing Children. 32 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

Inspiring Lives,” and that’s exactly what we work to do. We believe all our programs are critical in order to provide a full spectrum of services to children and families. We strive to make sure each child is safe, happy and prepared for life. For some families, this may mean being able to work one-on-one with a trained caseworker, someone who can teach them to set and meet goals which will benefit their children. Some families might simply want to reach out to one of our professional therapists for

What are some surprising facts about foster children in Florida that people may not expect? Many people are surprised to learn adoption is a local need. We currently have over 40 children and youth in our community who are looking for permanent, loving families. Last year 190 children in our community became a part of a home to call their own! We serve children of all ages, and we often have siblings who need families who will keep them together. Already this year we’ve matched 15 sibling groups with families! It’s so important for children to maintain these strong relationships.

What are some of the most common misconceptions about adoption? Many people believe that adopting a child from the child welfare system is expensive, when in fact it’s completely free! Furthermore, when parents adopt a child in foster care, their family has the advantage of on-going financial assistance, as appropriate for their child’s needs. Never mistake motion for action. Ernest Hemingway

I also run into a lot of questions about teens in foster care. When I mention adopting an older teen, many families ask, “What can I do for an older child?” or “What role will I play in his life?” Teens, too, want families of their own and homes where they can grow into successful adults. They’re at a very critical stage where they need a parent to guide them through the transition into adulthood. Teens want someone they can trust to teach them how to open their first bank account, apply for college and get their first job. It’s a very scary time when they’ll want to know that someone loves them and is looking out for them.

Resources for Information, Development and Education (PRIDE). Within three months of completing the PRIDE course, an adoption specialist will visit the family’s home and provide them with a home study so that they can share information about their life with children seeking adoption. Parents formally show their dedication to a child during the adoption finalization hearing, at which point they’re officially a family! After that, families brought together through adoption enjoy the same “growing-up” challenges as all families.

The Benefits Of

Pediatric Massage

By Kelly Johnson, ParkerPotions.com

There are countless benefits of pediatric massage for your baby. Not only can it boost an infant’s immune system, stimulate brain function and create a feeling of trust, but it also relieves colic and promotes better sleep. More importantly, pediatric massage also helps you bond with a child in any situation and in any developmental stage. Any time that you and your child can spend together is crucial for bonding, so start incorporating pediatric massage right when you bring your little one home from the hospital. Make sure to encourage your partner to get involved in pediatric massage as well! If you are wondering how to start practicing pediatric massage in your daily life with baby, below are helpful hints to keep in mind. Make massage part of your everyday routine. Massage your little one around the same time every day. You want to choose a time when you’re not feeling rushed and when your little one isn’t hungry or too full Choose a comfortable area. You can massage your kiddo on the changing table, on your bed, or on the floor. You might also 30 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

For You And Your Baby want to add some calming music, sing songs or talk softly to your baby. Be gentle. Don’t apply too much pressure or it will be overpowering. You want this to be a comfortable experience for both you and your bundle of joy.

Here are some basic pediatric massage moves to get you started: Hold your child’s heel in one hand and, with your other hand, start at the top of the thigh and slowly stroke all the way down to the ankle, gently squeezing the leg as you go. Then rub your kiddo’s feet with your thumbs, gently uncurling and stroking the toes. You can do these same motions on the arms and hands as well. With your fingers, draw an oval below your little one’s belly button, moving clockwise to follow the natural path of digestion. Then “walk” your fingertips from one side of your baby’s belly to the other, on the diagonal, as if you were making an “X.” Pediatric massage is a wonderful ritual to add to your child’s bedtime routine. It will ease your kiddo’s troubles (and your worries as well!) and also promote a healthy lifestyle for you and your child. Toddlers will feel

more relaxed, have better body awareness and experience less stress and frustration. Most importantly, it is a very special way for you and your baby to spend time together, strengthening your bond. Happy bonding!

About Kelly Johnson and Parker Time Potions Kelly Johnson is the founder of Parker Time Potions pediatric massage oils and an expert on parent/child bonding. Touches Make Your House a Home By Kat Freestone

Guests due to arrive? Here are some quick touches to make your home feel warm and welcoming. • Light candles in the main living area and bathrooms, using cool scents like fresh cotton or summer breeze to freshen up the space.

•B ake a batch of cookies right before guests arrive to make your house smell like home. Alternatively, boil orange peels and cinnamon sticks for a scent that’s longer lasting!

• Turn ceiling fans on low to get air flowing without blowing guests away. Additionally, if you’re expecting a large party, turn your thermostat down a few degrees to ensure no one gets overheated in the crowd. • Do a quick rearrangement of your furniture to open up the space. Even if couches normally face the TV, turn them outward to invite everyone in and pull a few extra chairs over to ensure there’s room for all. • Snack trays galore! A bowl of nuts on the counter, cheese and crackers on the coffee table and those freshly baked cookies on the patio should do the trick.

• An overhead fluorescent light can wash out a room, so turn on tableside lights and lamps to add depth to a room’s color and to make it more welcoming. • Grab some fresh flowers to fill a vase and bring outside color indoors. • Turn on the tunes to something soothing – when music is wafting through your home, it makes it seem occupied and happy. • Use the comfort of texture by adding cushy pillows and a soft throw blanket to the sofa. It’s a carefree touch that lends to a relaxed atmosphere.

How to Handle an

Attention By Elizabeth Putfark

The secret solution to calming your child’s constant craving

Rule #2: Listen. Acknowledge. Explain.

Hog

As a child finds their small concerns dismissed by busy parents and overextended educators, they search for bigger and better ways to make their presence known. “Negative attention fills a child’s needs just as well as positive attention does,” Morgan explains. “Kids need to know that they matter, and if they don’t feel that way, then they might choose to act out. If they throw a baseball through a window, for instance, that will matter!” When your child enters into an unjustified meltdown, the first thing to do is to hear them out. Ask that they use words to explain the whole tiresome incident, and then acknowledge that you see why their frustration is justified. Finally, show your respect for them by explaining why you need them to move on from the situation. By engaging with them in their crisis, you encourage them to be more empathetic to your own.

Your child’s still complaining about a wounded thumb that you know stopped hurting half an hour ago. Now all they really want is more attention, and you couldn’t be Rule #3: Think small. more annoyed. How do you respond without feeding the fire? Tough love? Feigned ignorance? Pretend you’re busy and wait for it to pass? Few of us face the persistent nagging of needy children as regularly as teachers in middle and elementary schools. For help on handling the limelight hog in your life, we turned to middle school history teacher, Daniel Morgan, whose work with kids in sports, summer camps and in the classroom has given him more than his share of experience working with attention-hungry kids.

Rule #1: Don’t diminish. While the constant pull of a demanding adolescent might be draining, ignoring it can have negative consequences, too. In Mr. Morgan’s experience, the last thing you should do is brush a needy child’s anxiety aside. “One of the most crucial aspects of speaking with kids involves validating their worries and concerns,” says Morgan, a graduate of the Citadel’s Masters in Education program. “When children are told through your words or body language that their problem doesn’t matter, they automatically feel alienated from you and misunderstood. And ironically, they just crave more attention.” 26 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

While it may seem like your child needs an overhaul in behavior management, sometimes even the smallest immediate changes can make a big long-term impact. “It takes a great deal of tolerance on the adult’s part, but even subtle changes can have a huge impact,” says Morgan, who spends summers counseling kids at a summer camp in New York. “For instance, try replacing the word ‘but’ with ‘and.’ It may seem harmless for a parent to say something like, ‘I know you're hungry but we don't have time to stop.’ However, what the child hears is that their hunger doesn't matter. A more prudent response might be, ‘I know you're hungry, and we are in a hurry – we'll get you some food as soon as we can.’ In this statement, the child learns the reason why there will be no stop and that their hunger is a priority that will be addressed at the appropriate time.” Morgan believes that each child has different attention requirements, but that in every circumstance those wants should be met with care. Once your child knows that you’re hearing their requests and responding compassionately to their frustrations, they’ll recognize their own responsibility to show you the same respect. Best of all, you’ll be teaching them the best way to respond to the cares of others – with understanding, empathy, honesty and respect.

As a result, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Health have both found that people who own pets are at lower risk of heart attack. And if you’re worried about pet allergens, don’t be: recent pediatric research indicates that children who are exposed to animals in early infancy actually boast stronger immune systems as they mature.

For happiness Reduced stress isn’t the only emotional perk of pet ownership. Studies show that pets promote mental health and even fight against many symptoms of depression. Psychologists believe

that animals bring a sense of personal ownership and importance to people’s day-to-day tasks, while daily care of an animal asserts individual capability, self-mastery and independence. After all, many of us got our first pet as a lesson in responsibility.

A patient-centered practice for all stages of a woman’s life

For habits For many, having a pet changes everything – but in a great way. The American Heart Association found that people who have dogs actually live longer due to the active lifestyle canines require. Walking, feeding, bathing – all these mundane operations can add depth and rhythm to the texture of our lives without requiring organic inspiration. Having pets can also connect you to others, as dog owners meet new people at the park and in outdoor restaurants, while the harrowing adventures of your cat offer an instant ice-breaker among fellow feline-lovers at work. When it comes to pet ownership, the question “Why? ” has already been answered. The only one left is, “Why not? ”

Criticism is prejudice made plausible. Henry Louis Mencken

What’s YOUR

Dog Dinner? having for

By Elizabeth Putfark

Ever thought about what goes into your dog’s food? It might be time that you did; and according to Dr. Janice Elenbaas, founder of Lucky Dog Cuisine, you might not like what you find.

Four major companies – Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, Mars and Colgate-Palmolive – control 80 percent of pet food production in the world. In the United States, their kibbles are all inspected, tested and approved by the USDA, FDA and the FTC. While any regulations at all are a comfort (and improvement from not so many years ago), for many pet owners they simply aren’t enough.

24 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

“It’s all about the ingredients you start with,” Dr. Elenbaas explains. “In regular dog food, everything from road kill and diseased organs to grain with toxic-level mold counts finds its way in. In fact, the dog food industry itself grew out of companies’ need to profit off the waste in their human food operations.” Of course, most of the toxicity is cooked out of dog food products before they hit the shelves. That cooking process, however, also scorches out most of the natural nutrients. The result? A highly processed product that many feel is causing more harm than good. According to the Canine Cancer Research Group, one in two dogs is now diagnosed with cancer. Just a few years ago, it was one in three. For nutritionists, it’s plain that such a dramatic spike in disease-ridden canines should inspire some serious questions: specifically, what are these dogs eating, and how is it causing them to fall victim to infection?

Copy from one, it’s plagiarism; copy from two, it’s research. Wilson Mizner

Those who probe the dog food manufacturing processes often find answers outside of grocery store aisle – sometimes even in their own kitchens. Dr. Elenbaas grew up in a family that fed their pets the same way most people feed their kids. “I thought that’s what everyone did!” Dr. Elenbaas laughs. “[My mom] didn’t have a nutrition background or anything, but she had a lot of common sense. She’d mix up farmer’s cheese, ground beef, liver, whatever she could find that had some value to it, and that’s what our dog ate.” Elenbaas continued her mother’s practice as an adult, viewing her pups’ nutrition in much the same way she viewed her own. “Feeding our dogs has been a reflection of how we live, which is by fueling our bodies with whole foods,” explains the retired chiropractor, whose work with people and animals confirmed her suspicions about the importance of diet to overall wellness. “Nutrition is a four year mandatory course in chiropractor school – you learn about all the chemicals that can cause blockages to our healing and energy flow. That’s what having a good diet is all about.”

Upon retirement, Elenbaas and her husband moved to the sleepy town of Beaufort, S.C., where they promptly sought out a butcher willing to supply their whole family – including Golden Doodles Murphy and Molly – with all the grass fed, organic meat they needed. “Really it was our butcher who first pushed me to think about marketing the dog food that I was making,” says Elenbaas, whose daughter now owns and operates a branch of LuckyDog in Canada. “After that I just started researching (and became a thorn in the side of the Department of Agriculture!). Eventually I figured out how to get the product to market, and we’ve been growing ever since!” Since 2007, LuckyDog has been producing and selling all natural, human-grade cooked meal plans to subscribers all across the country. Through connections to local famers, Dr. Elenbaas buys only the freshest grass-fed, humanely-raised beef and pork, organic turkey and chemical-free fish. Their vegetables are all GMO-free and their cheeses and yogurts as natural as it gets.

Even their spices are all organic and sustainably grown. After eight years on the market, LuckyDog proudly offers seven flavors, including the original Beef and Rice and the most recent addition, Picky Palate Pork. Murphy and Molly, LuckyDog’s official test subjects, sample each and every flavor before it goes to market. “Murphy has an extremely sensitive stomach, so I know if he’s OK with it, other dogs will be, too!” Of course, not every budget has room for all organic ingredients – especially if they’re going into a doggy dish. Yet for Elenbaas, there’s no substitution for whole foods in anyone’s diet – whether it’s eaten at the table, or on the floor. “I equate it to eating only Cheerios. It’s OK, it’s fine – but you don’t want to live off that!” For more on all-natural diets for dogs, visit LuckyDogCuisine.org. LuckyDog products are not sold in stores and are only available on a subscription basis.

Coconut Oil This is no regular cooking oil: coconut oil is gentle and pure enough to be used as a lotion, a make-up remover and a hair conditioner. For everyday use, rub a tiny amount between your fingers and apply to the ends of your strands to prevent breakage and flyaways. For a deep moisturizing treatment, apply all over your hair and cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap. Shampoo out after one to two hours, and enjoy soft, touchable hair for days!

Eggs For best results, use an entire raw egg! The yolk is rich in fats and proteins which moisturize your hair, while the white contains enzymes that remove unwanted oils. Apply the egg to clean, damp hair, and leave on for 20 minutes. When you rinse, make sure to only use cool water (hot water will cause the egg to “cook,” which will lead to a smell that you’ll want no part of!) and shampoo hair like usual.

Easy At-Home

Hair Treatments You Just Have to Try

If your once soft and shiny strands are starting to look dry and disheveled, look to your own kitchen for a cure! Conditioning treatments can be costly at salons and even store-bought remedies can wreak havoc on a budget. These at-home hair treatments are affordable, easy and contain no harsh chemicals! Yogurt If your hair is over-processed and you’re looking for a protein treatment, look no further than the yogurt in your fridge! The probiotics and high protein content of yogurt can do wonders for your hair and scalp. Simply apply for an hour or two, then shampoo like normal. For best results, stick to natural, plain yogurt that has no added flavors or chemicals. 22 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

Avocado Many beauty experts swear by avocado; its oils are light and very similar to our own natural skin oils and its proteins add much-needed moisture to dry hair. Mash up half an avocado and massage into clean, damp hair. Let sit for at least 15 minutes, then rinse with water. For an extra moisturizing mask, combine avocado with one of the other ingredients on this list!

Honey The idea of putting sticky honey all over your hair might give you flashbacks to grade school and cutting gum out of your hair, but this natural moisturizer can do wonders for your strands. Because honey is so thick, warm it first and add in coconut oil or olive oil to dilute it. Apply as a hair mask, then rinse after 20 or 30 minutes. Honey can have some slight lightening properties, so be careful if you are attached to your dark hair! Always do right- this will gratify some and astonish the rest. Mark Twain

Changing your hair style is never as easy as pointing to a model in a magazine and asking to look “just like that”! And as anyone who has had a painful experience with boxed dye knows, hair color is trickiest decision of all.

shades will look most natural on you. So if your hair is naturally light brown, stay within the medium blonde to dark brown shades. That still gives you plenty of room to experiment!

Your perfect shade is determined by chemistry and color theory. If you’re dying to try out a new shade, simply use our tips to find the perfect color to make your skin glow and your eyes sparkle.

Your age affects your hair color choices in two ways: softer colors look better as you age, and your hair might be a bit more fragile than it was when you were younger. Staying away from the extremes (platinum blonde or pure black) can help smooth out any wrinkles or imperfections and keep your hair healthy.

Know Your Skin Tone This one is obvious, but is something that many people overlook: your best hair color will match the underlying pigments in your skin. If you have warm, earthy undertones in your skin like gold, orange, or brown, stick to warmer hair colors with golden or honey tints. If you have blue, green, or pink undertones, stick with cooler hair colors like ash brown or auburn.

Don’t Discount Your Natural Color Many of us consider our natural color bland or dull, but natural hair can have subtle highlights and shade differences that chemical dye can never mimic. If you are determined to color, consider the tones your natural hair gets in different seasons. Subtle highlights to achieve your natural “summer” color year round can give you the vibrancy you desire without the extreme damage to your hair.

4 Ways to Ignite

Confidence With swimsuit season around the corner, feeling beautiful is at top of our minds and having the confidence to do so is key. Pick the Right Light

When it comes to intimacy, confidence has many variables – from how we feel about ourselves, to how strong our relationship is, to how comfortable we are in our own skin. Luckily, there are simple, fool-proof things we can do to help ourselves feel more self-assured and assertive in the bedroom.

Skip the fluorescent lights and set the mood with something more flattering, such as light fixtures that illuminate upward or lowerwattage bulbs. Dimmers, light bulbs with a blush tint, lamps and candles are great choices, too. Choosing appropriate lighting is a great way to set the stage for intimacy.

Pick a New Scent

Below, we outline some of the top picks from certified clinical sexologist, Dr. Kat Van Kirk.

The area of the brain that processes scent also rules memory and emotion. Picking a hot, new scent for a special night is not only a great way to spice things up, but also to re-excite your partner each time they smell it. Or it can help you get more quickly in the mood the next time you put it on.

Be Clothes Minded

Get Physical

Before you strip down, dress up in something that you love and feel good about wearing. Whether it's your favorite pair of skinny jeans, or a curve-hugging dress with some flirty lingerie underneath, choose an outfit that puts you in the mood to feel seductive. This is about you feeling good for you – not just looking sexy for a partner.

Turning up the heat in the bedroom can be as simple as lacing up your sneakers. Increased blood flow, stamina and testosterone, as well as a big boost in the look-good, feel-good department, are all reasons why a sweat session before your next romantic evening could pay off between the sheets.

Even Fighting About?! Ever come to that moment in a fight when you can’t remember why the argument started? Psychologists have found that in most cases, the root cause of ongoing couple conflict is the same: power.

How to spot a power struggle Fighting over power comes in many forms. Sometimes it means struggling to assert your independence, while more often it means wanting your partner to surrender theirs. Power is often the underlying issue in conflicts over autonomous action, decision making and blame, each of which threatens the equal hierarchy of a relationship. 16 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

By Susan Meeker

The study discovered power as the primary root cause of disagreements by asking 455 married participants to describe an ongoing conflict in their relationship and explain what their partner could do to resolve it. There specific answers were filtered into categories, and then a second group of 498 participants were asked which of those categorical scenarios would best resolve their own marital conflicts.

Stop the power play Recognizing the heart of the problem can be the first step towards solving it. Admit that you’re feeling threatened or overpowered so that your partner can address your concern directly (instead of dancing around it with unrelated spats). Similarly, look out for when your Of the categories – stop adversarial partner becomes defensive over behavior, relinquish power, demonstrate seemingly small issues. How Can I

Meet More

People at Parties

Read on for a few choice tips on meeting and mingling. Tip 1: By planting hidden cameras in the ceiling at parties, researchers proved that people are more apt to approach you if you are not balancing any food in your hands. If you want to hold a drink, keep it below waist level so people don’t see your knuckles which subliminally signal “go away.” Women, a shoulder bag is best to keep your hands free. Tip 2: Wear something fun and festive that people can comment on. You don’t have to don an enormous sun hat, but things like flower-shaped earrings draw smiling attention.

Tip 3: Isn’t it distressing when everyone is chatting amicably and you’re standing all alone? Here’s relief. Employ the world’s most obvious but under-used technique: Think of yourself as the Official Party Greeter. Find someone standing alone, extend your hand and say, “Hi, my name is . . . And yours?” Follow up with a question like “How do you know the host?” They’ll be grateful for the rescue. Tip 4: Can’t find a loner? Then approach a few people casually conversing and say, “I hardly know anyone here. May I join you?” They’ll think you’re courageous and cool – and you’ll be astounded by their warm welcome. We all work in sales. Whether we sell restaurant choices to our spouses, favorite shows to our friends, advice to our children or ideas to our boss, we make pitches all the time.

There are six rules for persuasive speech, no matter what you’re selling.

By Elizabeth Putfark

Your Guide to a

Persuasive Pitch In fact, knowing how to craft a good argument can make a huge difference in how many of the doors we knock on open, and how many remain closed. The next time you find yourself pushing an angle to a resistant audience, keep these six tips in mind.

Start with the Problem Solutions usually start with unique perspectives on old problems. Instead of warming yourself up with a slow introduction to your idea, start with a bold statement or question that pertains to the problem your idea aims to solve. By beginning with the problem and not the solution, you show that your mind is on everyone’s best interests – not your own ego or wishes.

Go for the Visual Even when they seem cumbersome, visual aids add to the effectiveness of any argument. According to research from Dartmouth University and Georgia State, presenting evidence in charts appeals to more people than either summaries of evidence or personal appeals. Find a way to offer your best information in visual form, but show restraint with graphic design as too much can quickly become distracting. The graphs used in the university study were plain-Jane and still convinced audiences more thoroughly than other appeals. 14 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

Steer Clear of Hypotheses

Easy on the Eye Contact You’ve probably heard that maintaining eye contact is the best way to demonstrate sincerity, but that may not be the case. New research from the journal Psychological Science indicates that eye contact actually puts people on guard, particularly if they are already likely to disagree. If you’re facing skeptical listeners, take the pressure off by periodically diverting your gaze. Steady eye contact can signal dominance in argumentative situations, and the last thing you want is for your audience to feel under the attack.

Three’s a Charm If you’re committed to broaching a controversial topic, you probably have more than just three reasons, but that doesn’t mean your audience wants to hear them. In fact, according to a recent article in the Journal of Marketing, three claims carry more persuasive potential than four or more. Not only do excessive points become tiresome, they can also undo initial positive impressions and trigger skepticism among listeners. Before making your pitch, list out the best supporting arguments for your cause. See if any items can be combined under umbrella statements, then whittle what’s left down to three essential points.

Potentialities are only convincing once we already believe in something. If your audience is still on the fence, avoid offering them hypotheses about possible advantages, tempting as they may seem. Once “what if’s” are on the table, potential risks and dangers become fair game as well. Uncertainty is the ultimate deal killer, so do your best to keep it out of the conversation altogether.

Stay Humble You might think you know the problem better than anyone, but it’s not always best to be the smartest person in the room. Make it clear that although you firmly believe in your pitch, you’re also always looking for ways to improve it. If you receive tough criticism, turn it into an opportunity to show humility and draw your audience in. Instead of offering a hasty, half-formed defense, admit that you’ve wondered about that area too and have some thoughts, but would love to hear from your audience about how they think the idea could be changed in account for that problem. No matter what, keep your argument focused on your audience – their interests and priorities, not your own. You cannot simultaneously convince them to change their priorities AND their behavior. Instead, explain the positive benefits that the object of your persuasion will appreciate.

I never miss a chance to have sex or appear on television. Gore Vidal

Creativity Picture this: Sherlock Holmes is puzzling his way through clues; Dr. House is mulling over a patient’s symptoms; and Doc Brown is troubleshooting problems with his time machine. Did you imagine any of those geniuses sitting in a chair? Probably not. Restless walking has long been accepted as a part of creative processes, but only for remarkable (or remarkably muddled) minds. However, new research suggests that the act of walking itself can serve as a catalyst for good ideas.

Leave the chair behind Scientists at Stanford University found that non-aerobic walking

improved creative output by an average of 60 percent when compared to sitting down. Participants were put through a series of four tests to isolate exterior causes of creativity (such as outdoor environments, changes in scenery and habitual behavior) from the act of walking itself. They discovered regardless of location, timing or context, walking and creative thinking stroll hand-in-hand.

Ways to walk more today

Even short walks carried a residual influence over creativity as well. “Practically, taking a walk immediately before a brainstorming session should help improve one’s performance” scientists wrote in their report,

If your meeting can’t be mobilized, pencil in a fifteen minute walk-break for yourself before taking a seat at the conference. You might be surprised by the out-of-the-box thinking you bring to the table!

Get your creative juices flowing by taking your one-on-one meetings to the streets, or swap a lunch date for a walking tour. You and your boss or colleague can expect to generate more novel ideas than you would sitting down, while the endorphin release that comes from mild exercise will likely leave you both with positive feelings about the interaction.

Interview by Elizabeth Putfark

You’ve seen Gators wear uniforms, helmets and pads, but have you ever seen a gator wear a crown? On Feb. 16, crowds gathered for the Miss University of Florida Scholarship Pageant, where 10 to 15 students compete for the opportunity to represent UF and the greater Gainesville community for a year-long reign. The winner goes on to compete at the Miss Florida Pageant over the summer with hopes of proceeding to the Miss America Pageant the following fall.

I’d been thinking about it, but I thought it was more my sister’s thing Miss UF as something far different since she was the current title holder. than what many people imagine. So different, in fact, that the Leesburg Once I decided to sign up I immediately got to work on my talent, going to the gym and native sees her crown not as a polishing my interview and my platform trophy to celebrate her achievement, statements. It was all a really fun experience, especially getting to know all the other girls. but rather as a megaphone – one I really enjoyed becoming friends with them which she looks forward to wielding in in the weeks before the competition. our community for the next year. Were there many surprises Tell me a little about the experience this year and what it felt like getting crowned. My decision to compete was pretty last minute. along the way?

Other than winning? (Laughs) I had competed once before when I was fourteen, and my sister won the year before. So I wouldn’t say anything was really much of a surprise, other than winning!

What’s the most difficult portion of the competition for you? I would say deciding on a song for my talent: lyrical dance. I have wanted to dance for so long since I haven’t been in the habit of doing it recently, and there were so many great songs that I wanted to dance to! I ended up dancing to a song I really love called “Listen” by Beyonce. It all worked out!

Tell me about your platform and what it means to have a platform. Every contestant in the Miss America organization has a particular platform that is developed throughout their time as title holder. Mine is part of a campaign about human trafficking awareness and vulnerability. So that means making people aware that human trafficking is a problem in our nation and even in our city of Gainesville, and then building up young women so they don’t fall prey to it.

I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. Mark Twain

What are some of the things you want to accomplish while you wear the crown?

Tell me about your goals as a student. What do you want to get out of your college years?

First, just being present and involved in our university and our city – being able to represent the university very well at all times, whether I’m wearing the crown or not. But I’d also like to be really involved in the school systems. It’s important to me to be able to share my platform with all generations as right now awareness is low for everyone.

I’m currently a family, youth and community science major, and I have a minor in nonprofit organizational leadership. However, I would also like to go to law school one day and pursue international human rights law. Maybe even work on human trafficking cases one day!

I would also love to help strengthen the bond between the Miss America organization and events going on the Gainesville community, particularly through philanthropies and fund raisers.

What sort of an impact do you want to make on young girls who tend to idolize anyone who wears a crown? I love the idea that I have a megaphone with the crown. Because I’m wearing a crown, it might seem like the outside is what I’m focused one, and I hope to tell young women that’s not the case. I hope to get them to listen to me so I can show them that really, internal values are so much more important than external beauty. Self-confidence and self-image are two things that will carry you far in the future. And I think the crown is a great megaphone for that.

Do you think people tend to harbor misconceptions about what pageants are all about?

This is a complex moment to be a university student, given some of the violence happening on campuses. How do you see yourself and your fellow students responding to that violence? For a time, there was definitely a fear culture following some of the national tragedies and events. However now, I think it’s become something of a wakeup call in that now young women are now much more careful. They carry pepper spray, they don’t walk alone. They’re more careful, which I think is something valuable to carry with us for the rest of our lives.

When we’re traveling, when we move out of Gainesville – we have to remember that not everywhere is as safe as the places we grew up. So it’s really taught us how precautious we need to be.

What makes you proud to represent the University of Florida and the greater Gainesville community? I have wanted to go to the University of Florida ever since I as a little girl, so having that orange and blue in my blood really makes me proud. I love Gainesville; I love the city and the university. I love getting away from campus and being involved in my church and being involved in organizations outside my university bubble. I really appreciate the opportunity to represent Gainesville and the community as a whole. I’m excited for the year ahead!

To schedule a Miss UF appearance at your event, contact MissUF@fbk.org. More information on the pageant can be found at fbk.org/miss-uf.

“Self-confidence and self-image are two things that will carry you far in the future… The crown is a great megaphone for that.”

Absolutely. You know, there are different types of pageants, and the Miss America organization is truly unique. It is in no sense of the word a “beauty” pageant. The two main tenants of the Miss America organization are talent and interview, and those are the most important aspects of the competition. The four points of the crown are service, scholarship, success and style. So a lot of times when people look at a girl in a crown they’ll think she got that based solely off how attractive she is, and that’s simply not the case for the Miss America organization. There are beauty pageants out there, but Miss America is really more about interview and talent. It is now possible for a flight attendant to get a pilot pregnant. Richard J. Ferris

“Now, it’s not about having the power over, but the power to – to do and achieve whatever we choose.”

When’s the last time you looked around at the world, your home, your office and relationships and thought, “What an incredible time to be a woman!” Reviewed by Elizabeth Putfark

Yet that’s how Dr. Nancy D. O’Reilly begins the introduction to her new release, Leading Women, a collection of 20 entries from industry-leading women on business, professionalism and leadership. Sure, most 21st century women have greater freedoms and opportunities than ever before, but as news, media, lewd comments and social stigmas remind us, haven’t we still got a long way to go? 10 Flourish Magazine | April/2015

In the 250 pages that follow, Dr. O’Reilly and her compatriots answer with a resounding “Yes!” yet their positivity remains undeterred. Instead, the optimism of O’Reilly’s bold opening statement gets echoed and enriched by each of essays that follow in a uniquely realistic way. With remarkable precision, the compilation charts a new course between the two camps of gender politics – the one

that complains about inequalities and the one that denies they exist. Each voice acknowledges the specific handicaps imposed on women by media, men, other women and themselves, and then quickly moves on to the bigger question: What are we women going to do about it? It’s clear from page one that these aren’t women with a bone to pick, a

grudge to hold or a theory to defend. These are real women who have fought their way past the double standards and stereotypes to emerge as successful, confident individuals – powerful women eager to share the secrets to their success with others. Because although women now have a presence within all disciplines and fields, they’re still hulled-up in the halls of middle management, below the glass ceiling that’s as difficult to define as it is to break. So what are we women missing? Dr. O’Reilly suggests that it has something to do with the way we think about power. She admits that in her talks with fellow professional females, there’s sometimes a tinge of discomfort when she brings up the notion of power – a discomfort she blames on a myriad of factors that make power seem dangerous to women of character. “In the past, the portrayal [of successful women] has always been so limiting,” explains Dr. O’Reilly. “To be successful, you have to be aggressive; to be successful, you have to be the b-word; to be successful, you have to have power over others.” Seeing the ways in which “society punishes powerful women in subtle and not-so-subtle ways,” as Dr. O’Reilly describes, women have been encouraged to avoid power and to fear it. This limiting belief – that women and power just don’t mix – has kept many women from standing up for their rightful place on the board, in the home and at the head of table. But that’s beginning to change. “Now, it’s not about having the power over, but the power to – to do and achieve whatever we choose.” With that redefinition of power in mind, Dr. O’Reilly contacted 19 of the women she’d worked with through the years

on her internet radio talk show, WomenSpeak, and asked them to answer the following question: “What are the keys women must acquire if they are to unlock their personal power and create a better world?” Their succinct, practical replies are organized into three target areas that make up the sections of the book: Mastering Our External Environment; Mastering Our Internal Environment; and Connecting to Support One Another. Each section signifies the three-prong approach to empowerment that has no specific beginning and no particular end, except that it eventually carries women away from damaging and often subconscious beliefs about their place in the world and workforce and towards their greatest potentials. These are not the arguments you’ve heard before. In “Eight Key Ways Women Become Natural and Necessary Leaders,” Lois P. Frankel argues that women are uniquely suited to the style of leadership modern history demands – “cooperation and collaboration” as opposed to “command and control.” Birute Regine echoes that sentiment in “Soft is the New Hard: The Hidden Power of Feminine Skills,” going even further to illustrate the unique ways in which women can and must capitalize on the “soft” skills that differentiate them from their “hard” male coworkers. In the second section, Vivian Dillar takes on “The New Beauty Paradox” by questioning how we internally sabotage our success by giving in to the pressures of media – particularly those that confine our powerful years to those before our hair turns grey. Finally, contributors like Cheryl Benton and Janet Rose Wojtalik redefine what it means to be a part of a modern women’s movement in a world that continues to raise its hackles against feminism, even in an atmosphere

more favorably disposed to equality than ever before. Most importantly, the collection itself represents the kind of collaborative effort than many leading women argue will eventually close the wage gap, silence the naysayers and shatter the already trembling glass ceiling. “It’s exciting that we’re coming together now – there are these networks of women all around the world who are really wanting to support one another,” explains Dr. O’Reilly. “This is the Ah-Hah moment!” Of course, not everyone is graced with the presence of leading women in their lives to make them feel connected to the “coming together” happening in our time. But that’s what collections like Leading Women are for. “What this book is really about,” Dr. O’Reilly says, “is what can each of these 20 voices do to help you find success? Because really, you put five women in a room together and geez, anything can happen!”

We spend about one-third of our lives in bed and the kind of sleep we get there determines how we live the rest of our lives. A good night's sleep is the best way to cope with daily stress, work more efficiently and fight off illness. Sleep disturbances, on the other hand, are associated with serious illnesses such as hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, psychiatric disorders, mental impairment and even growth retardation in children. The universal criteria for adequate sleep is waking up feeling completely refreshed. Most importantly, sleep should be uninterrupted. On awakening, there should be no drowsiness even when engaging in boring activities. If you feel drowsy while awake, you may not have had enough quality sleep.

Inside Insomnia: Correct Sleep Imbalance for Good with Traditional Chinese Medicine When the daily sleep hours are less than an individual's needs, a "sleep debt" develops. This means the loss of sleep will eventually need to be repaid with additional sleep over the coming nights. Our body seems unable to adapt to sleep less than it needs. When the sleep debt becomes too great, it can lead to impaired body functioning. Caffeine and other stimulants cannot act as substitutes for sleep; they can only counteract some effects of sleep deprivation.

The human body is programmed to live in harmony with the rhythm of nature. The regular succession of daily or seasonal cycles is the primordial expression of the waxing and waning of yin and yang in the universe. On a daily basis, Qi (vital energy) follows a specific time schedule and pathway to circulate inside the body.

• take over 30 minutes to fall asleep every night • wake up several times at night and cannot go back to sleep • wake up too early in the morning • have vivid, dreamlike experiences while falling asleep • feel sleepy, have frequent naps or fall asleep at inappropriate times during the day • struggle to stay awake when inactive, such as while watching TV or reading • have difficulty in paying attention or concentrating at work, school or home • become emotional very easily

The sleep-wake cycle is also part of Shen (spirit) activities. Shen in Chinese medicine refers to thought, state of consciousness and mental functions that keep the mind sharp and alert. It is the highest authority of the physical body that orders it to rest or work. In coordination with the natural rhythm, Shen hides in the organs at night for recharging and comes out during daytime to exert its duties. Sometimes when Shen is too excited, for example during emotional conflict, sleeping problems occur.

Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners believe that Qi is more prevalent in different meridians at different times. Physicians use the Generally, if you find it difficult to fall "Daily Qi Current of the 12-hour asleep, cannot stay asleep through the Division" as one of their clinical night, wake up too early, have a hard guidelines. The sleep-wake cycle is time waking up or are very tired regulated by this energy cycle. For during the day, you may suffer from a example, when people find it difficult sleep disorder. When you experience to sleep particularly between 1 a.m. to the following symptoms for a month 3 a.m., TCM will look into the liver or more, it is recommended that you function as these two hours are the seek professional advice: liver’s time.

This isn’t right, this isn’t even wrong. Wolfgang Paul

Normal sleep is the result of the harmony of every organ in the body: yang organ governs awakening, yin organ governs sleeping. When insomnia develops, it is because the internal environment has been disturbed and become overly excited leading to a restless state. Among the correlations between the organs and mental functions, the heart is the most important as it houses the Shen. The kidney governs the storage of Jing (essence) and promotes it transforming into marrow in the brain. The spleen acts as the nourishing source of mental activity. The liver governs the flow and discharge actions that regulates mental activity directly. Finally, the gallbladder governs some important aspects of mental functioning such as decision making. Insomnia may follow when any of these organs are in disharmony. Insomnia can be from many different causes and need to be addressed separately. By regulating our sleep, we will find it easier to manage our lives as well as to maintain our health.

Celebrating Earth Day 2015

Stop! Before you flip past this article, know this: making ecofriendly choices is way easier than you think. We’ve gathered a list of easy swaps that can fit into your daily routine and make it greener by a mile.

It’s So Easy

Going Green! By Elizabeth Putfark

Eliminate Disposable

Use ceiling fans more

Swap disposable napkins for cloth. Cloth napkins come in stylish colors and textures and can be reused again and again.

Swap AC for ceiling fans. OK, maybe don’t abandon the AC altogether, but at least augment it with ceiling fans. Fans use only 10 percent of the energy required by AC units and can efficiently lower temperatures by as much as 10 degrees.

Change your light bulbs Swap your incandescent bulbs for CFL’s. Compact florescent bulbs burn through 75 percent less energy than incandescents and last up to 10 times longer.

Go locally grown Swap imported produce for locally grown. Supporting local farmers not only boosts your community’s economy, but also cuts down on the fossil fuel emissions created by the mass transit of food products. The average grocery store veggie travels 1,500 miles to be sold!

Eat more veggies Swap meat for veggies. The meat industry is responsible for nearly 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, so swapping it out for main-course veggies even twice a week can have a big environmental impact.

Swap bargain beef for grass-fed When steak is on the menu, go with grass fed. It’s better for you, and its production creates far fewer emissions than corn-fed beef.

Revive cast iron

Swap plastic for reusable bags

Swap non-stick pans for cast iron. Cooking it old school with cast iron cuts down on the emission of harmful fumes during cooking, including perfluorooctanoic acid, which has been linked to heart disease.

This easy switch requires little investment and can eliminate the need for thousands of bags every year. If you always forget, try out the reusable bag app – it will remind you to grab your bags when you stop outside your local market!
