My Wallet? Let’s face it: We all lose things from time to time. Our glasses, our cell phones and occasionally, our wallets. While most of us know not to keep important items like social security cards or birth certificates in our billfolds, don’t overlook these other risky items Cheat sheets. If you keep a cheat sheet with important passwords, store it in a safe place – not in your wallet.
Medicare card. This displays your social security number. If you need it, then make copy and black out the SSN.
Spare key. Sure, they’ll still need to know your address to use it, but you probably have that on your driver’s license. Stay safe by keeping your spare key elsewhere.
BEFORE
Blank checks. A big no-no! If you use checks often, carry them out only when you know you need them, like on your trip to the grocery.
Passports. While traveling inside the U.S., keep it locked up at home. Thieves can have IDs or bank accounts issued in your name in foreign countries if they get a hold of this important book.
Credit cards. Only carry one credit card at a time; that way, you’ll only have to cancel one card if ever you lose your wallet.
Receipts. Though business are only allowed to publish the last four or five digits of your account number on receipts, but that’s all thieves need — along with some info on the merchant — to find the rest of the digits. By keeping your wallet’s holdings to a bare minimum – a driver’s license, a credit card and a few bucks – you’ll reduce your risk should it all fall into the wrong hands.

CONGRATS BACK-TO-BACK NATIONAL CHAMPS!
Sweet
Repeat By Mike Capshaw
Gators Gymnastics Wins Second Straight National Championship in Dramatic Fashion Immediately after Bridgette Caquatto’s 9.95 on the floor exercise was announced, someone uttered, “I think we tied.” Then, it was repeated louder and more enthusiastic, igniting screams, hugs and Gator Chompin’ all around an orange and blue sea off glee. The results of that quick math were correct: Caquatto’s career-best tying score tied Florida with Oklahoma after 48 events. But had the Gators repeated as national gymnastics champions? Or, would there be a tiebreaker? No one knew for several awkward minutes as both teams shared the podium. After all, there had never been a tie in 33 years of the Super Six finals. Once official word came there would be no tiebreaker and streamers

would rain down on both teams as national champions, the team had a calmer, beenthere-done-that celebration that ended with the team chanting “It’s Great … To Be … A Flor-i-da Ga-tor!” in unison. Florida coach Rhonda Faehn applauded the rule because tiebreakers should only be used in situations where it’s needed to determine seedings such as when Florida tied Alabama for the SEC Championship. “I understand the tiebreaker situations for qualification, but for the actual title, if you tie, that’s how it should be,” Faehn said. “You shouldn’t have to break that. I always feel like if there’s a tie, it needs to remain a tie.” Her Gators agreed.
“There’s no reason to break a tie when both teams did phenomenal,” said Bridget Sloan. “That’s like saying, ‘Ahh, nah, you’re not quite good enough. We like them better.’” “I think a tiebreaker ruins that feeling of being accomplished.” “Not only are we repeating, we’re making history again because has there ever been a tie?” It was UF’s 42nd national title and first of the 2013-14 school year.

Can I Play… So Many Options Make Youth Sports A Tricky Choice
8
Flourish Magazine | June/2014
The only people who find what they are looking for in life are the fault finders. Foster’s Law
Shuffling through all the youth sports flyers that are stuffed into your schoolers backpacks can be an intimating task.
Never fear. Flourish is here to help you fly safely from the flyers and into the fire. By the end, you’ll have a handle on it all and choose the perfect activity for your budding athlete. Whether you’re examining cost, care or convenience, we’ll try to simplify the process by breaking down what the mayor programs offer. The good news about all of those flyers? There’s something for every interest. There’s tackle and flag football, basketball, cheerleading, archery, fencing, BMX/bicycling, golf, gymnastics, horseback riding, swimming, tennis, lacrosse, soccer, martial arts, volleyball, water sports and wrestling. The City of Gainesville helps organized Babe Ruth baseball and Pop Warner football/cheerleading. There also are multiple clinics and camps to hone your young star’s skills or teach basic fundamentals as well as specialized, advanced sports and traveling teams for the more serious athletes.
Did we miss anything? Probably. Gainesville is more active than most towns when it comes to youth athletics, so let’s cut to the chase with a few pointers: 1) Know age requirements. Don’t waste the organization’s and your time by calling, only to find out your little one isn’t old enough for that sport. 2) Know your financial obligation. Each sport requires a fee for each season, ranging from a few bucks to hundreds. Be sure to ask about additional costs. Annual registrations and memberships often are tacked on to your total bill. Also, check any uniform/equipment costs. 3) Know everything. Find out if practice/game times conflict with the family schedule and if the locations are convenient. Don’t sign up if you cannot have Johnny there on time. Nothing is more disheartening for a child than showing up in the second inning of the big game. When I hear somebody sigh, ‘Life is hard,’ I am always tempted to ask, ‘Compared to what? Sydney Harris

AT 6-FOOT-4, HE CAN SURVEY DEFENSES BEFORE THE SNAP BETTER THAN WHEN HE WAS UNDER CENTER.
By Mike Capshaw
New Offense = New Vibe A new offense has renewed Florida football fans’ hope heading into the 2014 season. Sure, spring scrimmages mean little in the grand SEC scheme. Jeff Driskel could sizzle for a gazillion yards during the Orange & Blue Debut, only to fizzle this fall. Regardless, the fan vibe filling the air around The Swamp was widely positive as an estimated crowd of more than 35,000 exited the stadium on April 12. The scrimmage ended in a 23-23 tie with a hurry-up, no-huddle offense tying up defenders all afternoon. “I’m extremely pleased with the day offensively,” said fourth-year coach Will Muschamp. “You can contribute all that to (new coordinator) Kurt Roper and the offensive staff and the job that they’ve done.” Muschamp mentioned “how far we’ve come” after 15 spring practices with the team adjusting to a shotgun formation and its third offensive 10 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
coordinator in Muschamp’s four seasons. The shot-in-thepassing arm and re-energized fan base was necessary. Last season, Gators fans and players suffered through a seven-game losing streak that capped off a 4-8 record and the program’s first losing season since 1979. It wasn’t all on the offense. Countless key players suffered injuries, including Driskel breaking his leg. He looked healed and sharp in the spring game by completing 19 of 33 passes – to eight different receivers – for 171 yards and a touchdown. By halftime, Roper’s quick-strike offense piled up more than 400 yards and 36 combined points – More than UF scored in an entire game in 2013. The total yardage was more than 600 yards by the final whistle. “It felt like we were really efficient,” Driskel said. “I think when you’re not beating yourself up (with turnovers and penalties), you can really, really gain momentum and confidence.”
Sophomore Demarcus Robinson turned a short Driskel pass into a 31-yard touchdown. Robinson popped open on a crossing route to make the catch before making a cutback that sprung him free for an untouched path to the end zone. The third-andthree play showed how Roper’s scheme systematically wears down defenders. By not huddling, substitutions are limited, so defenders don’t get a breather unless a timeout is called. It’s similar in philosophy to what coach Gus Malzahn successfully implored at Auburn this season. That hurry-up, no-huddle offense helped the Tigers to the biggest turnaround in SEC history and play for a National Championship.
The offense was so effective that coaches such as Arkansas’ Bret Bielema and Alabama’s Nick Saban – Malzahn and his Tigers upset in the SEC Championship – lobbied for a rules change to slow down college football. What worked at Auburn and at other schools with lesser talent certainly can work at Florida. If the fast-paced offense can blend well with Muschamp’s alwaysstingy defense, then fans could be feeling the vibe well into 2014 season. For now, Driskel said the team enters the offseason on a high. He called the team “re-energized” thanks to the “new start” Roper’s offense has provided. “There’s something about (the offense) where you can get rolling,” Driskel said. “When you start getting completion after completion, it builds your confidence and gets you into a rhythm that sometimes is tough for the defense to break.” WILL MUSCHAMP HAD PLENTY TO SMILE ABOUT DURING THIS YEAR’S ORANGE & BLUE DEBUT, INCLUDING A NEW OFFENSE THAT HE WAS “EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH” DURING THE SCRIMMAGE.
I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else. Winston Churchill

The Beat
Gives Back
How did you get into drumming and teaching?
I grew up in Fort Lauderdale where I got involved in the band at my middle school. I started playing the snare drum in seventh grade and later started a band, so it kind of went from there. I was in all the bands in high school: Jazz band, marching band, concert band. I really loved it, so I kept playing and practicing every day. When I moved to Gainesville in 2000, I joined some new groups including the UF Jazz Band. As time went on, teaching was a natural progression for me.
Did you major in music at UF? I majored in sociology because music was already such a big part of my life that I didn’t want to be 100 percent immersed in music. Sometimes I wish I had studied music in college – it would have been easy for me since I loved it so much.
There’s nothing quite like beating on a drum for the first time. It’s a soulful, empowering experience that Chad Voight – UF alum and owner of The Classic Beat Drum Studio – hopes to share with more than just his students. Last month, Chad partnered with University of Florida Health Shands Arts in Medicine program to introduce the thrill of playing drums to cancer patients.
African hand drum – where we play traditional African-style drumming. That’s always a lot of fun.
You taught a hand drumming workshop for cancer patients through University of Florida Health Shands Arts in Medicine – tell me a little about that. I was invited to do the workshop by a friend. We decided to invite the patients to our studio, The Classic Beat Drum Studio. When everyone showed up, we just started with the basics. We went over the basic tones, where the drum comes from and how it’s made. Then, I took the class through a number system that I invented to teach students how to play complicated rhythms easily. I wanted to start slow to get people comfortable with playing.
Was the group able to make music that same day?
For someone who’s looking to We started putting rhythms together, and pick up an instrument, why would I picked out certain people in the group to do “call and response” solos. I’d play one you recommend the drums? The one thing drums have that no instrument has is the ability to play with other drummers. Dozens of drummers can get together in drum lines or drum circles, which are really unique. The drums are also very tribal; they’re the heartbeat of the band and they really connect with people on a molecular level.
rhythm, and they’d repeat it back to me. That way, each person has the chance to play a solo-type rhythm.
What’s your favorite drum to play? My preference is drum set because that’s what I grew up on and it’s very western, but I also love Cuban music and the conga. I also teach a djembe class – that’s the If you’re going through hell, keep going. Winston Churchill
I’m imagining myself having to do a solo – I’d probably feel really shy! Did you see a change in the group’s confidence as time went on? Pretty much everyone was shy at first. There were only three experienced drummers in the group, but no one else had ever touched a djembe before. It can be intimidating to play in a group, especially on an instrument you’ve never played before, but I teach by working from the ground up. The number system I developed makes the drums really easy to understand, so you can play things that sound more complicated than they are.
How did the patients feel once the session was over? By the end, everyone was just glowing. Everyone has a smile on their face and was saying how they never thought they could do something like that and how impressed they were with the way the group sounded. They were really happy and thankful. I love seeing the enjoyment people can get out of playing the drums, especially people who have never played before.
It sounds like a really uplifting experience. That’s what drums have over other instruments – that group factor. When people play together, they share an energy, and that can be uplifting. It was a very positive experience for everyone. Cheifland softball wins school’s first girls state championship
Chiefland’s softball team won the title, school’s first girls state n with a claiming the Class 1A crow ainst convincing 9-2 victory ag wn Jay at Historic Dodger to in Vero Beach.
The feat was even more remarkable for two reasons. 1) The Indians peaked at the perfect time after only finishing third in their district. 2) Six of CHS’s nine starters were freshman. Those freshmen were instrumental in the improbable run. Catcher Emily Hallman served as the on-field general and Lauren Stalvey was consistent, tossing a two-hitter in the finals. Lauren Parker had three of the Indians’ 12 hits. Britney Gilliam named to the all-state team. 12 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
Baseball Brag Chiefland (19-5), coached by Wayne Weatherford, hammered Sneads 12-2 in the semifinals after upsetting No. 1 Dixie County 3-2 in the regional finals. The win exacted revenge on the Bears, which had handed Chiefland three of its losses. Chiefland High’s last state title came in football in 1997. Jay beat another local team, Bell, to advance to the finals. It was Bell’s first state playoff appearance in 15 years.
Blue Wave Crash PK Yonge – featured by Flourish in our May issue – finally broke down the Final Four door before losing 6-5 against Pensacola West Florida in the 4A state finals. Heading into the championship, the Blue Wave outscored its four opponents by a whopping 30-1 margin. It was the 19th time a Blue Wave team has reached a state championship game.
Not as many fireworks to report on the local baseball front although Trenton and Williston were still playing in the 1A regionals at press time for this issue. Trenton (21-3), the regional host and defending 1A champ, rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Hamilton County 6-4 in the regional semifinals. Starter Jon Ward improved to 10-1 with the decision.
Celebs for a Cause There was a celebrity basketball game at Buchholz on May 13 to benefit PK Yonge athlete Jeremy Martin, a 26-year-old. Cornelius Ingram, Chris Doering, Willie and Terry Jackson, Travis McGriff, Greg Gantt, Gerald Fields, Willie Powers and Vernell Brown were among celebrities expected to attend.

Like a Pro It’s easy to put cleaning on the back burner, but if you take a few tips from the people who clean up every day, things will begin to get organized and stay organized. Who are these pros I’m talking about? Servers! As a server, I know from experience that cleaning up after other people, and yourself, is hard to do in between the chaos and commotion of all the other people and messes happening around you. There are a few simple steps servers take to keep things in their rightful place that I implement in my own home, and now you can too!
to the bedroom? There are probably shoes or sweaters lying around that can be put in their place. Just do a quick sweep of your surroundings before you go from place to place, and always have both hands full. This guarantees that you will constantly be putting things away, therefore constantly organizing the clutter.

16 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
At the end of the night, we all have specific duties assigned to us that puts everything back in order and leaves the restaurant sparkly clean for the next morning. At home, instead of assigning chores, rotate a group of related chores that each family member must get done before bedtime (or playtime!) This ensures that no one gets stuck doing the same chores over and over, and that everyone knows what they are responsible for. Everyone working on a small portion of the clutter every day is much easier than one person handling it at the end of the week.
Closers In the restaurant biz, these are the people who check to make sure everyone else has finished their duties before they can leave for the night. As part of a family’s “side work,” there should always be one closer whose only job is to check everyone else’s side work. For a closer, your side work IS checking side work, so this job is also on rotation too! That means the kids have a turn at being the boss. This will help kids to value accountability, and will teach them what expectations the family has for how clean the house should ideally be. Be the first to “close” and check side work to set an example, and be specific when it comes to what qualifies something as clean or not clean. You’ll have a clean house and responsible worker bees in no time! As long as everyone is working as a team – as a family – the mess will be wiped away and stay away. You can even make a rotation wheel, or laminate the duties for each set of side work to make it official! A few days into your server-style sweep, you’ll hardly notice you’re doing work anymore.

Paint It Never underestimate the power of paint. A fresh wall color can add brightness while a painted vanity can easily update the look of your bathroom.
Scrub It
Revamp It
Pull out the soap and sponge and get scrubbing – getting a squeaky clean bathroom is the first step to falling in love with this room once again.
Pick one large feature you’d like to replace. The faucet? The light fi xtures? The mirror? You can completely change the look of a room with a single tweak.
Hide It
Design It
Once your bathroom is free of grime, make a list of all the features you don’t admire. Do you dislike the cheap linoleum floor? Is the bathtub stained beyond help? Add a large mat to cover most of the floor and a solid bath curtain to hide the tub.
Now that the foundation is laid, personalize it! Add fun framed paintings to the walls, buy a new set of towels or add matching toothbrush holder and soap dispenser to give it the finishing touch.
De-clutter It
A little elbow grease won’t only save you money, it will add you into the mix! Paint your own wall art or sew your own shower curtain for a look that’s solely yours.
There’s nothing less attractive than hairbrushes and shampoo bottles scattered here and there. Manage the mess with storage bins and baskets. 20 Flourish Magazine | June/2014

Bread of the Mighty Food Bank
Empty Bowls Fundraiser When you think of those who are “food insecure,” who do you picture? A homeless man in a big city? A small child in Africa? Certain neighborhoods, races or regions? The reality might not be what you think.
Right now, millions of Americans are at risk of hunger. These are often hard working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food. In Alachua County alone, one in five adult residents and one in four children struggle with hunger, and these citizens don’t always look the part. According to a 2010 Feeding America network survey, only 10 percent of food insecure households are homeless. In addition, 36 percent of hungry households have at least one working adult and 23 percent of all food insecure adults are college educated. Sometimes, it’s just not enough.
That’s where Bread of the Mighty Food Bank is stepping in. This year, they hosted their 3rd annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser in order to promote hunger awareness, raise much needed funds and provide support for those who are coping with hunger in North Central Florida. Since its inception in 2012, the Annual Empty Bowls event has raised tens of thousands of dollars in an effort to stop hunger. This year’s fundraiser was held at Trinity United Methodist Church and featured guest speaker Chad Jester, president of Nationwide Insurance Foundation. Guests
dined on bread and soup while discussing the issues of hunger in our community. At the end of the event, all guests were encouraged to take home one of the hundreds of empty bowls that had been crafted and donated specially for the event by Alachua County school children, local artisans and pottery enthusiasts. Overall, the event was a tremendous success, and we’re one step closer to ending food insecurity in Gainesville for good.
If you’d like to make a donation or learn more about this cause, visit the Bread of the Mighty Food Bank’s website at breadofthemighty.org
Hunger is a real issue in Gainesville, and the number of hungry individuals in Alachua County exceeds the national average. This is especially troublesome in our children; a lack of adequate nutrition affects their cognitive and behavioral development and makes kids more likely to experience irritability, fatigue and low concentration, all of which can lead to poor grades in school. Just because we aren’t a metropolis doesn’t mean we’re free of poverty and in fact, it’s a misconception that most struggling individuals live in large cities. Poverty rates are higher among rural, non-metropolitan counties like ours since it can be difficult for food banks and emergency food assistance networks to support our less fortunate. 24 Flourish Magazine | June/2014

Ripped Summer Sports in Gainesville By Kristy Watt
Summertime means hot weather, beach vacations and plenty of guy-getaways. And yet, if your plans will keep you here this summer, there are still plenty of ways to stay on top of your exercise routine to prepare for all the shirtless summer fun. Here are the top Gainesville summer sports that will get you ripped. Swimming Swimming may be one of the most popular summer sports, and for good reason – just find a pool and hop on in! Swimming can be done at any time of day and works the arms, pecs, legs and abs.
Windsurfing Yes, there’s windsurfing in Gainesville! This option is a fun combination of surfing and sailing; it’s a popular choice not just on the coast, but also for those who live near large lakes. There are various windsurfing classes in Gainesville if you’re just a beginner looking to start some summer fun.
Hiking/backpacking You don’t have to live in the mountains to enjoy a great day on the trail. Backpacking is a simple summer activity that’s great for cardio. In addition, it helps develop your legs, core, abs, butt and thighs. 28 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
Biking In a college town, bikes seem to be everywhere. Biking is a great way to get outdoors and get your blood pumping. Invite a couple pals along on a morning or afternoon bike ride to work your calves, thighs, butt, arms and pecs.
Kayaking Check out the Santa Fe Canoe Outpost or O’Leno State Park for some great kayaking. This water sport is great for the hot summer months, and can also help develop the muscles of the arms, back and core.
Volleyball Whether on the beach or shore of a lake, volleyball is a great, full-body activity. Not only is it awesome for cardio, but it’s also a great workout for the arms, legs, core and butt.
Tennis Another popular summer sport that is great for exercising, tennis works the entire body and is also wonderful for cardio. Since you’re paired with another player, tennis is a great way to play with a close friend or your significant other.
Stand-up paddle-boarding This summer sport has become wildly popular only in the last five years; it’s fun, it’s a great workout for the whole body, and creates really defined abs. You can go paddleboarding in the ocean, in lakes, or rivers.
Rollerblading A great summer sport for hanging out with friends on weekends, or after a long day at work, rollerblading works out the legs, thighs, butt and core, as well as being great cardio. An obstacle is often a stepping stone. Prescott

Don’t Forget to Pack the Essentials!
Stand in the center of Gainesville and face north. Extend both arms out at your sides, close your eyes and imagine submerging your hands into warm saltwater. Can you feel it? OK, so it’s not quite that close, but centrally located Gainesville gives beachgoers options that are easily within reach in either direction. On one hand, there’s the Gulf of Mexico. On the other, the Atlantic Ocean. Each beach is unique and perfect for an inexpensive day trip. Only 57 miles away, Cedar Key is the closest to Gainesville. The drive down Florida Highway 24 can be entertaining; it passes by the Upper Wacassa Conservation area, so be on the lookout for deer, wild turkey and other wildlife. The Cedar Keys are a cluster of islands that make for a picturesque approach into town as motorists cross three bridges to reach the main island. With beach houses and businesses on stilts, it’s old Florida at its best. This isn’t a surfer’s beach, but it’s great for families with small children who simply want to splash in the shallows.
One of the best parts of Cedar Key’s beach is the playground, which includes a wide array of swings, slides and equipment that can’t be found at a traditional park. There’s also a volleyball pit, a basketball court and multiple picnic shelters with grills. If your child is a shell collector, Cedar Key has tons of oyster, clam and other Gulf-based seashells. Cedar Key’s pier is a great place to introduce kids to fishing; just be sure to get a free fishing permit before using the pier. Catfish, redfish, trout, grouper and drum can all be caught from the pier, and there’s a bait shop nearby. While there’s only one beach for public access at Cedar Key, there are dozens along the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a slightly longer drive (72 miles from Gainesville to St. Augustine), but the beaches offer a true ocean experience with bigger waves, more sand and, of course, more people than Cedar Key. On weekends, it can get crowded, so be sure to get there early to secure the best spot.
The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision. Helen Keller
• Chairs • Sunglasses • Shoes or flip flops • Extra towels • Suncreen – SPF 30 or higher • Hats, umbrellas or a pop-up tent for shade • Cooler with lots of water, food and snacks • First-aid kits are always wise to have handy • Blankets to sit
• Whistle to help corral the kids on a crowded beach or for emergencies • Jug of water to rinse off feet and shoes before getting back into the car • Change of clothes for the drive home • Beach toys like shovels, buckets, beach balls, squirt guns, frisbees and a football
Because waves are larger in general, it’s important supervise all family members in the water, not just children. The Atlantic is typically windier than Cedar Key, so bring some kites for added fun. Also, the variety of shells is amazing, so walk the beach as the tide falls to find the best ones. Overall, the Gulf may be the better choice for intimacy, but the Atlantic’s true ocean experience may offset the bigger crowds. No matter which direction you head out from Gainesville, take pleasure in knowing you have two awesome options – at your fingertips. Flourish Magazine | June/2014 29
Looking for a grab-n-go snack for you and the kids but don’t love the look of the boxed products at the supermarket? Dehydrated fruit is your soon-to-be best friend. This simple snack can be made ahead with no special ingredients or equipment – plus, it’ll last for months! All you need is an oven, parchment paper, sheet pans and the fruit of your choice. First, prep the fruit. Choose ripe fruit, wash it in cold water and remove blemishes, pits and stems. Cut up your fruit evenly and remove the skins on fruits like peaches and apples.

Next, soak the fruit in lemon juice and water for about 10 minutes. This will keep it looking pretty and minimize discoloration. Blot with a dry towel once ďŹ nished. Preheat the oven to 130 or 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Thinly sliced apples and peaches do better at a lower temperature, while berries work wonderfully at 160.
Line sheet pans with parchment paper and arrange fruit on top in a single layer. Place fruit in the oven and cook, rotating every two hours. So when’s it ready? When the fruit is ready, remove it from the oven and place in glass or plastic containers to "cure." Leave the container open for four to ďŹ ve days so that any moisture left from the drying process can evaporate. Seal the containers after ďŹ ve days. The fruits will stay edible for 10 months, so enjoy!

Give summer the welcome it deserves by hosting your very own “Arty Party”!
It’s an
Arty
Party! Creation Stations Station 1: Painting It’s no secret that kids love paint. However, when faced with a large canvas, they may be unsure of what to try. Consider posting printouts of famous paintings to help spur their creative juices. By taking inspiration from the famous works of Monet, Van Gogh or Picasso, children will experience an educational element along with their fun.
Station 2: Clay
Station 4: Coloring While it’s great to “color outside the lines,” there’s no harm in following a template, either. Provide crayons and coloring books or coloring sheets printed online for a soothing, settling activity. For those who would rather continue their own creativity, provide blank construction or drawing paper instead.
Snack Time!
Station 3: Collage
Crispy Rice Paintbrushes – These cute snacks couldn’t be any easier to make. Simply pick up a box of prepackaged crispy rice snacks (or make your own), insert a popsicle stick handle, and dip into white frosting that’s been tinted with food coloring. The resulting “paintbrush” is sure to be a hit!
Introduce children to collage materials – things such as buttons, bits of construction paper, colored cloth and magazine clippings. Encourage children to use these materials to create a unique piece of art. Tell them to think of how they can use some or all of the materials to complete a picture, then let the creating begin.
Colorful Popcorn Cones – Turn a colorful birthday hat upside down, remove the elastic, and you have the perfect popcorn holder! Fill it with popped corn, then pipe a few lines of color using the leftover tinted icing or sprinkle with multicolored chocolate candies. Viola! It’s an instant masterpiece!
While most children have played with playdough, few have ever tried creating something permanent from clay. Encourage children to create a favorite animal, person, toy or story, then bake their creations for a long-lasting keepsake.

While it may seem tempting to snap at your dog or hold his mouth closed, these actions may actually rile him more, causing the unwanted barking to continue. Instead, there’s a simple trick that works much better: Teach him to bark on command. By teaching your dog to “speak,” you can actually use this trick as a tool to train him to quit his unnecessary noise-making. First, identify certain objects or events that make your dog bark. Does he bark when you’re holding a toy? When the doorbell rings? Have these things on hand.
Get into position by placing yourself facing your dog, who should be sitting on the floor in front of you. Hold the toy or have a partner ring the doorbell, tempting your dog to bark. Say the command in a firm but excited tone: “Speak!” Continue to do this until he responds with a bark, and reward him with praise or a treat every time he does. It will take practice, but eventually your dog will learn to associate the command with the action.

Now comes the important part, “Quiet.” Once your dog has learned to speak, work on the command for silence. Wait a moment or two after he has finished barking before saying “quiet” and rewarding him. With practice and patience, your dog will be well on his way to silence.

Knowing how to handle an alligator attack will greatly increase your chances of survival. It may seem like an unlikely incident, but living in Florida, alligator attacks are a serious threat. If ever you come face-to-face with one of these kings of the swamp, here’s your guide to making it out, limbs intact.
Go for the eyes. It’s useless to beat the armored scales of an alligator – if it can take down a kicking zebra, your ďŹ sts aren’t a serious threat. Instead, be smart. Go for the eyes, which are the most vulnerable part on an alligator’s body. A teenager in Florida survived an attack in the water after jamming his thumb into an alligator’s eye.
The palatal valve works too.
At dusk, dawn and night, beware. These are the times when alligators are on the hunt for food, and under no circumstances should you enter the water or stand on its edge.
It’s the ap of tissue behind their tongue that prevents water from owing into their throats. If you’re unlucky enough to be within reach, pry this valve down to choke the gator.

Stay away from potential nesting sites, alligator-infested waters and of course, live gators. Alligators become particularly aggressive during mating season, which begins in April.
To eat or not to eat? Alligators will attack for two reasons: To protect their environment or to snag a meal. If they’re protecting their territory, they’ll usually deliver one chomp and then let go. If they’re after a snack, they’ll latch on.
Alligators have very strong jaws for biting down that are actually weak for opening. If the alligator shuts its mouth, clamp your hands around its jaws to hold them closed. If you’re in a sticky situation where ight isn’t an option, you may be able to fend the gator o in this way. Hundreds of people are killed by alligator attacks all over the world each year, so stay vigilant, be safe and don’t forget these tactics.

Flaxseed
If you haven’t yet met this wonder-food, it’s about time you were introduced. Though flaxseed has been around for centuries, many of us are only just discovering flax’s incredible health benefits. Don’t be fooled by these unremarkable little seeds; the potential of this superfood might surprise you. Flaxseed is composed of a variety of healthy elements, primarily omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and lignans. The powerful combination of omega-3 and high fiber is the ultimate diabetes fighter, nutritionists say. Others, such as the chemical engineers at the Indian Institute of Technology, tend to agree. This team of engineers conducted a 3-month study of flaxseed’s effect on diabetic patients, finding that a therapeutic, flaxseed-enriched diet significantly reduced participants’ blood glucose levels. Additional research also suggests that lignans – the third important element in flaxseed – modestly improves blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. Overall, flax is a diabetes-fighting machine. Omega-3s found in flaxseed can help combat other diseases, too. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published one investigation which studied how flax oil affects inflammation. Patients who consumed a little flax oil each day saw a 30 percent decrease in inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis. In addition to arthritis, omega-3s can combat Alzheimer’s, heart disease, ADHS and osteoporosis. Since flaxseed is the richest plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acid, it’s certainly something worth noticing! Feeling down in the dumps? Try adding 2-3 tablespoons of flaxseed to your daily diet. Flax contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a mood-boosting 42 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
compound that is essential for our brain cells’ proper functioning. It’s especially important that woman add this to their diets, since 85 percent of us aren’t getting enough of it. Now, if you’ve got the blues from menopause symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and moodiness, you’re in luck. Flax is a phytoestrogen, which acts as a natural hormone stabilizer and will lessen the symptoms of menopause. Try incorporating flax into any of your normal meals; your mind and body will thank you. Of course, we all know about the importance of getting enough omega-3’s and eating a diet high in fiber, but what about lignans? Flaxseed is certainly high in them; it contains 800 times more lignans than any other tested plant food. Why is this important? Lignans are thought to be cancer-protective compounds. One study published in Oxford Journals, Carcinogenesis researched this theory, finding that “Flaxseed and its lignin components reduced mammary tumor growth at a late stage of carcinogenisis.”Apart from breast cancer, studies have also shown flaxseed to prevent the development of colon cancer and prostate cancer. It’s a potentially life-saving finding. Though flax was once an unknown plant, it’s quickly rising in popularity. Incorporate flaxseed into your normal meals or make it in a special dish. Either way, this small superfood isn’t one to overlook.

Is Blood
Pressure
Treatment Out Of Control?
pointed out that treating such patients does not offer them any benefit but does pose risks (JAMA Internal Medicine online, May 13, 2013). In the 21st century, doctors pride themselves on practicing evidence-based medicine. Recent studies of treatment for hypertension suggest, though, that practice is sometimes influenced by belief and habit as much as by evidence. Prescribing drugs for patients whose blood pressure is 160/100 or higher is well-supported by research that shows such treatment saves lives. What is less clear, however, is whether patients with milder hypertension actually benefit from drug treatment. A systematic review of high-quality clinical trials by the independent Cochrane Collaboration revealed that antihypertensive drugs have not been shown to benefit patients with mild hypertension and no pre-existing cardiovascular disease (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Nov. 14, 2012). Mild hypertension was defined with the upper number (systolic blood pressure) running between 140 and 159 and the lower number (diastolic blood pressure) between 90 and 99. Most physicians in the U.S. have been trained to treat patients with blood pressure in this range using medications. British doctors, on the other hand, tend to be more conservative. A recent commentary by a London physician, “Waste and Harm in the Treatment of Mild Hypertension,”
The author underscores the influence of the pharmaceutical industry on existing treatment guidelines. Lowering the threshold for blood pressure treatment has been called “disease creep.” It created 13 million new “hypertensive” patients in the U.S. overnight. The physician who pioneered hypertension screening, Dr. Julian Tudor Hart, responded to the Cochrane analysis, “Why has it taken more than 30 years to reach this conclusion, when it was already evident from any careful and critical reading of the trials claimed originally to justify intervention in the diastolic range 90-100 mm Hg?” People’s Pharmacy readers know that our first recommendations for lowering mildly elevated blood pressure usually are the nondrug approaches doctors refer to as therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC). These include diet, exercise, relaxation therapies, smoking cessation, alcohol moderation and certain mineral supplements. Following through on such lifestyle interventions is challenging, but it can lower blood pressure nearly as well as medication. TLCs do not trigger side effects and often have additional health benefits. Both the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) have strong evidence to support their positive influence on cardiovascular outcomes.
The only thing worse than a man you can’t control is a man you can. Margo Kaufman
People often complain about dizziness or sexual side effects with blood pressure medicine. ACE inhibitors like lisinopril and ramipril can lead to persistent coughing that can be incredibly disruptive. One reader reported: “My doctor told me that the cough that developed a month after taking lisinopril could not be due to the medicine. He said it would have happened anyway. I was given an inhaler for asthma. After using it to no avail, I insisted that we change the BP medicine, and the cough disappeared.” To practice evidence-based medicine, doctors need to keep up with the research and follow their oath to “First, do no harm.”

It seems that no matter how disciplined we are to declutter and purge, we’ll inevitably hang on to our favorite stuff. Just ask my mom. While she has never been one to collect antiques, vacation souvenirs and the like, she has meticulously collected family memorabilia. On my 40th birthday, she compiled a visual scrapbook of my life, including “welcome new baby” cards, a kindergarten art-fair painting, report cards and high-school prom newspaper clippings. Then, a few years ago, out of her treasured cedar chest came patches, pins, ribbons, dog tags and photos from my dad’s service in WWII and the Korean War. These were the unique makings for arrangements that she would create in shadow boxes for her grandsons, who were too young to know him when he passed away in 1988. “Knowing that I couldn’t part with these items was half the battle; the other half was knowing what to do with them,” she said when I asked about the inspiration behind creating these eye-catching glimpses of a chapter in my dad’s life. Now, thanks to the inspired visual gift, the treasured mini museum is on display to

That’s the number of married fathers who, according to the 2011 U.S. Census, act as the primary childcare provider for their children. While many still consider mothers to be bestsuited to rear children, today’s fathers are facing a whole new world – one where they are in charge of the household.
Fatherhood Redefined “My wife enjoys calling me ‘Mr. Mom,’” said stay-at-home dad Sean, father of an 11-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son. “I take it as a term of endearment.” It’s dads like Sean who truly feel the ever-changing perceptions surrounding fatherhood, childcare and gender roles. To him, these role reversals are a necessary – albeit unexpected – part of their family dynamic. “When I lost my job, I tried to see it as a new beginning,” said Sean. “My wife took on the role of breadwinner; right now, my biggest challenge is accepting that. My contribution to my family is to now help shape the kids and take care of the house rather than support it financially.” Though some men find it difficult to adjust to such role reversals, others see their newfound purpose as only natural.
“Honestly, I haven’t paid much attention to people’s perceptions,” said temporary stay-at-home dad Matt. “The biggest thing I’ve learned from this experience is that unless you’ve experienced it for yourself, you truly can’t understand, so people’s perceptions really don’t matter to me.” “I get a lot of ‘How do you do it?’ comments, especially from women,” said Bo, single father of 10-year-old daughter, 9-year-old twin sons and 7-year-old son. “Most women I talk to seem to think that it’s too tough of a job for men to handle. I get the impression that they think I need a woman to help me.” Society’s skepticism is but one of the many hurdles dads like Sean, Matt and Bo must overcome. Financing child support, balancing daily routines and disciplining strategies also top the list. “For me, it’s been about balance,” said Sean. “I’ve had to find the balance between being the disciplinary figure in the home to the one that the kids turn to for help.”
In between goals is a thing called life, that has to be lived and enjoyed. Sid Caesar
“I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve relied on my wife up until this point to handle things with the kids,” said Matt. “So, finding myself the one responsible for the daily routines and needs has been difficult. There’s a loss of freedom that’s tough to swallow – I can’t make plans on the fly like I could before. Everything has to be thought out and planned for ahead of time. “Getting help with child support is a large hurdle for me,” said Bo. “There’s a perception in society that men should be the only ones to be held financially responsible for their children, but that’s simply not true.” Childcare costs can be a real struggle, especially for single parents. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that it costs $241,080 to raise a child to the age of 18 – that number doubles or triples if you have multiple children and no, it doesn’t include the cost of college. That’s a lot of dough for one person to raise. And yet, stay-at-home dads experience something many can’t – the joy of watching their children through every step of life. Caring for children, no matter if you’re a man or a woman, is certainly a labor of love. Flourish Magazine | June/2014 37
Keeping
Nothing is more important than family. It’s vital to have an emergency plan in place so your family knows exactly what to do in the case of an emergency. It’s also extremely important to make sure your children understand what an emergency is and how they should react in the event of one. Most importantly, hold practice drills until the plan is second nature; this will reduce panic in the event a real emergency occurs. To help parents in this task, here’s a list of ideas and reminders that will guide you through making an emergency plan for your home.
By Daddy Nickell, daddyncompany.com
Your Family Safe In the Event of an Emergency Teach Your Child to Call 911. Communicate. Parent-child communication is essential for success. Start by talking to your children to learn what they already know about dealing with emergencies, discuss different types of emergencies and ensure they understand exactly what constitutes an emergency. Make sure your discussion is age-appropriate; how you discuss the idea of an emergency will vary from toddlers to teenagers. Knowing there is a plan in place will make them feel secure. Communication is important before, during and after the emergency. Communicate before to ensure they know the drill and understand its importance, communicate during to keep them safe and calm and communicate after to understand how their experience was and to minimize trauma and stress.
Practice on a turned off cellphone or play phone. They will need to be able to give emergency people their full name, address and telephone number. This seems to be a very scary thing for a child to do since they understand the weight of calling it. Also practice answering the door for the police or EMT. Make sure they know only to open the door to uniformed officers.
Proper Alarms for Early Warning. Make sure you have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in place and test them every six months to ensure they’re working properly. These early warning devices could save your life. For information on where to purchase these devices and how to properly install them in your home visit www.firstalert. com or an alternate credible source. Explain to your children what they are and why they help.
Write Down Numbers.
Look to the Media.
Have emergency numbers written down on or near the fridge. Consider keeping an emergency binder that has phone numbers like the neighbors’ phone numbers and grandparents’ phone numbers. If your child is old enough to carry their own cell phone, make sure they have all of the important numbers programmed inside. Be sure your child knows how to use these numbers in case of emergency. Practice what they will say, and how they respond to the person arriving at the scene.
There are plenty of ways to teach children about emergencies. Use kid-friendly books, television shows or movies to help solidify the idea of an emergency, get advice from an additional source and help your child become more familiar with the whole concept. No matter how you develop an emergency plan for your family, the most important thing is that you’re prepared. You can also take a trip to your local fire or police department to have them meet and talk with some of the emergency personnel
34 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
there. This will make them not quite as scared should they need to interact with them in a real emergency.
Keep an Emergency Safety Kit in the House. Make sure your children know where they can find the flashlights, blankets, heaters and other essentials they might need during the emergency.
Set a Meeting Place. Be sure to set a meeting place outside of your home in case of a home emergency, but also have one around town should there be a school or city-related emergency. Oftentimes cell phone use is impossible during an emergency so do not count on being able to talk to each other. If there is a place you all know to meet, you will eventually find each other. Include neighbors, friends and family in this plan. Make sure your child knows exactly who to call or who they are allowed to leave with. Robert Nickell (a.k.a. School’s only been out for a week and you’re already hearing the dreaded, “I’m bored,” from the kids. Don’t despair! Grab a seat and a deck of cards and cure the summer boredoms with one of these fun math games.
Learning Is In SCHOOL’S OUT BUT
“Double It” (1 or more players) • 1 deck of playing cards, Jokers and face cards removed • 1 sheet of grid paper and crayons How to Play: Each player picks a different colored crayon. Shuffle the cards and place them all in a single deck, face down. The first player draws a card from the top. The player mentally doubles the number drawn and colors in that number of squares on the grid paper. Play continues until all spaces have been colored in. Whoever has the most boxes colored in at the end, wins!
Each 10 found is placed face up for other players to verify. First player then asks another player of their choosing for a number that will go with a number in his or her hand to make a 10. If the player has that number, it’s handed over. If not, the other player says “fishing for a 10” by taking a card from the deck. Game play continues until one player has no more cards in his or her hand. Variations: For a more challenging game, players can be allowed to use three cards to make a 10.
“Ten’s Castle” (2-4 players)
have picked up (10, 20, 30, 40…). The player with the most 10s wins. Variations: This game can be played with varying target numbers for additional practice – “Sixteen’s Castle” for example, where players would find combination to create 16. For a greater challenge, build the “card castle” face down so that players have to rely on memory to find the combinations. By spending a few minutes immersing your children in these games, you’ll not only cure their boredom, but you’ll extend their learning, too!
• 1 deck of cards, Jokers removed Variations: For older players, have the players choose two cards and use multiplication instead of addition.
“Fishing for a 10” (2-4 players) • 1 deck of playing cards, Jokers and face cards removed How to Play: Game play is similar to the game “Go Fish.” The dealer deals seven cards to each player and places the remaining cards in a pile. The players then look for 10s in their hands (two cards that, when added together, equal 10). 32 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
How to Play: Begin by creating a “card castle” – five cards face up on the first row, four cards face up on the second row, three cards face up on the third row, two cards face up on the fourth row and one card face up on the fifth row. Place the remaining cards in a deck near the castle. The first player searches the card castle for a 10 – a face card or a combination of cards that total 10. The player replaces the cards taken with cards from the deck. Game play then rotates to the next player. When all cards from the pile have been used, players count the 10s they

Shelly Interview by Lauren Douglass
BHUSHAN Music and Motherhood
NYC-based musician Shelly Bhushan thought she had it all under control – until her daughter was born, that is. Now, this new mom fights a little “baby brain drain” to discuss all the beautiful ways her newborn has changed her outlook, her music and her life.
Shelly Bhushan’s newborn inspires her passion Tell me about your new album, Something Out of Nothing.
I know you just had a baby – how has motherhood been for you?
It’s my fourth album and my second full length album, and it celebrates different aspects of New York. It uses a theme that I’ve used many times, but looks at things through a different lens. This is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this. For me, it’s been a really beautiful writing process. As a singer, I worry about what I sound like, but this is the first time that I really made the album about the songs and the meaning behind the songs, not about me.
It’s been good and crazy. Everyone tells you, “Get ready because it’s going to be really hard,” but I didn’t really take them seriously. I’ve always balanced a lot of different things in my life and I’ve gone through my own hardships, but having a baby has been a completely eye-opening experience. My baby is great but my brain is just not the same right now! I’m definitely experiencing those first few hectic weeks of parenthood that everyone talks about.
What type of audience is this album geared toward?
How has having a newborn affected your music?
I think it’s for everyone. I don’t consider myself or my music inaccessible. A common theme of mine is defying odds and living your life and overcoming things. Also, I talk about being observant and taking time to reflect on what’s going on in your life.
It’s interesting because I wasn’t sure how this would affect me musically. I thought maybe I’d come up with a lot of miracle content, but it’s not all “Oh, I love my baby” so much. My content has been very random. As I said before, one of the great hallmarks
28 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
of my music is being able to reflect on the world around you. I’ll be sitting on a train and see a feather floating around and really be struck by that. Finding that inspiration and turning that into an analogy is something that I’ve never done before. I feel as though I used to be a superficial writer, but going through motherhood has made me look at life in a whole different way.
How has being a mom changed your view of the world? It’s hard to say because I’m still so new. The weight of having a life in your hands is enormous. I know that I can change everything about her life. This may sound crazy, but this is the first time that I’ve really felt like an animal. I feel very primal, and I’m not making myself feel this way, nature is. I sometimes feel like I don’t have control over myself, and it’s a really unique feeling.
Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts. Albert Einstein
What’s the strongest piece of advice you’ll have for her as she grows into a woman? I think a strong piece of advice would be to listen to people. Don’t just hear them, really take in what they’re saying. When you pay attention to people, you get so much from that. Whether it’s learning about a person or a situation, you can then assess the situation, the world and yourself. It’s something I’ve had to learn how to do, and the better I get at it, the more it’s helped me as a person and a musician.
What are your hopes for yourself as a mother? I want to be the best mom I can be. I’m not going to be perfect – no one is – but I want to show her that she can be whoever she wants to be. I think by being the best me, I can teach my daughter how to be the best her.

“I want to be the best mom I can be”
Having a child turns you into a very different person.
Do you think you worried a lot before your daughter? Sure, I’m always thinking about a lot of different things and I definitely look both ways before I cross the street. Now as a mom, I’m like “Holy cow.” [Laughs] Obviously the goal is to keep yourself intact and you can’t be too crazy because that’s not what’s best for your child. After you have a baby, I always describe it as though your heart has left your body and is now with your child. If something happens to your child, it happens to your heart. We haven’t really left the apartment much, so I haven’t really exposed her to the world yet. My whole life right now is completely catered to her. Before, my life was about a lot of different things and I still want to keep my life balanced, but now it seems as though she’s the only thing that matters.
I don’t think that will change as she gets older. I dropped my 5-year-old off today at school just like I do every day, but I started tearing up. There’s an overwhelming protectiveness that comes out when you become a mother.
What are some of your hopes for her as she grows up? I want her to be a good person. My husband and I are both very musical and we hope that she’ll appreciate music, though I don’t necessarily need her to be a musician – in fact, I’m secretly like, “Don’t do it!” I want her to be smart and to be able to be herself. I want her to have both of her eyes open and enjoy the world and not be cynical. I just want her to be happy and to find people who love her. Just basic, good things.
Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. Mark Twain

This Guy Got
Divorced
Here’s What He Said about His Ex-Wife.
Marriage Advice I Wish I Would Have Had #1. Never stop courting. Never stop dating. NEVER EVER take that woman for granted. When you asked her to marry you, you promised to be that man that would OWN HER HEART and fiercely protect it. This is the most important and sacred treasure you will ever be entrusted with. SHE CHOSE YOU. Never forget that and NEVER GET LAZY in your love. 26 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
Gerald Rogers got divorced after 16 years of marriage. He publicly wrote this confession on Facebook: Obviously, I’m not a relationship expert, but there’s something about my divorce being finalized this week that gives me perspective of things I wish I would have done differently. After losing a woman who I loved and a marriage of almost 16 years, here’s the advice I wish I would have had:
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. Ralph Waldo Emerson
#2. Protect Your Own Heart. Just as you committed to being the protector of her heart, you must guard your own with the same vigilance. Love yourself fully, love the world openly, but there is a special place in your heart where no one must enter except for your wife. Keep that space always ready to receive her and invite her in, and refuse to let anyone or anything else enter there.
#3. Fall In Love Over and Over and Over again. You will constantly change. You’re not the same people you were when you got married, and in five years you will not be the same person you are today. Change will come, and in that you have to re-choose each other every day. SHE DOESN’T HAVE TO STAY WITH YOU, and if you don’t take care of her heart, she may give that heart to someone else or seal you out completely, and you may never be able to get it back. Always fight to win her love just as you did when you were courting her.
#4. Always See The Best in her. Focus only on what you love. What you focus on will expand. If you focus on what bugs you, all you will see are reasons to be bugged. If you focus on what you love, you can’t help but be consumed by love. Focus to the point where you can no longer see anything but love, and you know without a doubt that you are the luckiest man on earth to be have this woman as your wife.
#5. It’s Not Your Job To Change Or Fix Her. Your job is to love her as she is with no expectation of her ever changing. And if she changes, love what she becomes, whether it’s what you wanted or not.
#6. Take Full Accountability for your own emotions. It’s not your wife’s job to make you happy, and she CAN’T make you sad. You are responsible for finding your own happiness, and through that your joy will spill over into your relationship and your love.
#7. Never Blame your wife if YOU get frustrated or angry at her, it is only because it is triggering something inside of YOU. They are YOUR emotions, and your responsibility. When you feel those feelings, take time to get present and to look within and understand what it is inside of YOU that is asking to be healed.
#8. Allow your woman to Just Be. When she’s sad or upset, it’s not your job to fix it, it’s your job to HOLD HER and let her know it’s OK. Let her know that you hear her, and that she’s important and that you are that pillar on which she can always lean. The feminine spirit is about change and emotion and like a storm her emotions will roll in and out, and as you remain strong and unjudging she will trust you and open her soul to you. DON’T RUN AWAY WHEN SHE’S UPSET. Stand present and strong and let her know you aren’t going anywhere. Listen to what she is really saying behind the words and emotion.
Tell her to take time for herself, ESPECIALLY after you have kids. She needs that space to renew and get re-centered, and to find herself after she gets lost in serving you, the kids and the world.
#15. Be Vulnerable. You don’t have to have it all together. Be willing to share your fears and feelings, and quick to acknowledge your mistakes.
#9. Be Silly.
#16. Be Fully Transparent.
Don’t take yourself so damn seriously. Laugh. And make her laugh. Laughter makes everything else easier.
If you want to have trust you must be willing to share EVERYTHING. Especially those things you don’t want to share. It takes courage to fully love, to fully open your heart and let her in when you don’t know if she will like what she finds…Part of that courage is allowing her to love you completely, your darkness as well as your light. DROP THE MASK. If you feel like you need to wear a mask around her and show up perfect all the time, you will never experience the full dimension of what love can be.
#10. Fill Her Soul Every Day. Learn her love languages and the specific ways that she feels important and validated and CHERISHED. Ask her to create a list of 10 things that make her feel loved and memorize those things and make it a priority every day to make her feel like a queen.
#11. Be Present. Give her not only your time, but your focus, your attention and your soul. Do whatever it takes to clear your head so that when you are with her you are fully WITH HER. Treat her as you would your most valuable client. She is.
#12. Be Willing To Take Her Sexually. To carry her away in the power of your masculine presence, to consume her and devour her with your strength, and to penetrate her to the deepest levels of her soul. Let her melt into her feminine softness as she knows she can trust you fully.
#17. Never Stop Growing Together. The stagnant pond breeds malaria, the flowing stream is always fresh and cool. Atrophy is the natural process when you stop working a muscle, just as it is if you stop working on your relationship. Find common goals, dreams and visions to work towards.
#18. Don’t Worry About Money. Money is a game, so find ways to work together as a team to win it. It never helps when teammates fight. Figure out ways to leverage both persons strength to win.
#13. Don’t Be An Idiot.
#19. Forgive Immediately
And don’t be afraid of being one either. You will make mistakes and so will she. Try not to make too big of mistakes, and learn from the ones you do make. You’re not supposed to be perfect, just try to not be too stupid.
and focus on the future rather than carrying weight from the past. Don’t let your history hold you hostage. Holding onto past mistakes that you or she makes is like a heavy anchor to your marriage, and it will hold you back. FORGIVENESS IS FREEDOM. Cut the anchor loose and always choose love.
#14. Give Her Space. The woman is so good at giving and giving, and sometimes she will need to be reminded to take time to nurture herself. Sometimes she will need to fly from your branches to go and find what feeds her soul, and if you give her that space she will come back with new songs to sing. (OK, getting a little too poetic here, but you get the point.)
What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say. Ralph Waldo Emerson
#20. Always Choose Love. Always Choose Love. Always Choose Love. In the end, this is the only advice you need. If this is the guiding principle through which all your choices are governed, there is nothing that will threaten the happiness of your marriage. Love will always endure. Ready, set, glow - just in time for summer with these foolproof tips.
Glow By Heather Aulisio
Get a
Gorgeous A great glow starts from the inside and works its way out. Be sure to drink plenty of water and limit your caffeine intake, which can dehydrate the skin and make it look dull and dry. When gathering groceries, spend extra time in the produce section. Reach for sweet potatoes, apples, carrots, berries, lemon, spinach and beets – they help strengthen the skin and have antiinflammatory and anti-aging properties. Blend or juice your favorites to combine several of these skin superfoods for a maximum effervescent effect. 18 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
Supplements can make skin glow as well. Fish oil and flax seed oil capsules are perfect additions to your balanced diet – they’re high in EFA’s (essential fatty acids) which are great for your skin! Plus, they can be consumed when you are too busy to make a smoothie – an added bonus!
Invest in some beauty product staples. Apply liquid or powder luminizers just above the cheekbones, high on the brow bone, down the bridge of your nose and in the corners of your eyes for a luminous contouring
effect. Cheek stains and tints can be applied in conjunction with a luminizer and are light weight so you won’t look or feel weighed down. Look for sheer cheek stains to get a soft, transparent glow with the slightest pop of color. Finish the look with a high quality moisture spray; during warm spring and summer days, it will keep your skin hydrated, smooth and shimmering. Anyone can get a gorgeous glow. Follow some of the suggestions above to get noticed and get “glowing!”

Whether you’re traveling across town or across the country, moving can be an exciting, rewarding experience. However, before you start collecting cardboard boxes, here are a few important steps to keep in mind.

Plan Plan Plan medical records. If you’ve hired movers, it’s The move date is set, and you’re eager to get started! And yet, there are still many unanswered questions. What’s your moving budget? Do you want to hire movers, or do it yourself? Have you made the travel and storage arrangements? Before you jump into a hectic relocation, take some time to consider all of your options. Moving can get expensive; between selling your home, buying a new one, packing and traveling, you’re bound to stretch your financial muscle. You’ve thought of all the obvious costs, but don’t forget hidden fees like utility deposits, property taxes and parking fees. When it comes to hiring a mover, do your research. Learn the difference between van lines, van line agents, independent carriers and moving brokers. Contact your insurance agent to ask about coverage while you’re in route and research moving protection options as well.
Moving Day You’ve prepared yourself for a perfect move. Now it’s time to hit the road! On the day of the move, have a box of essentials handy. Include items like bottled water, aspirin,
important to let them run the show; you don’t want to get in the way of the loading and unloading of heavy furniture. Once the house is empty, do one last walk through to make sure nothing was left behind. Check the attic, closets, medicine cabinets and the drawer under your oven. Also, check for any damage caused by the movers; you don’t want to lose your security deposit over someone else’s mistake.
House to Home Congratulations, you’ve done it! As you’re getting settled into your new home, take some time to pat yourself on the back; moving is never easy and now the hardest part is behind you. As you’re unpacking, look over your belongings to see if anything was damaged along the way. If you do find any items that are lost or broken, file a claim within nine months of the move; the sooner the better. As for unpacking, it’s easiest to do
one room at a time. This will help you keep your focus and allow you to watch your progress. Choose one room as your “sanctuary,” which you should fill with all of your favorite items. You can retreat to this room when you need a break from the rest of your work-in-progress.
With a little luck, your move will be smooth and headache-free. Then comes the fun part; exploring new places, meeting new people and getting used to calling this new house your home.

Here you are. You’ve worked early mornings and late nights, nailed that first promotion and then the second, and now you’re sitting behind an oak desk with a gold nameplate and a team of workers at your beck and call. You’re the leader, but are you a good one?
Horrible
Leadership Habits By Sarah G. Mason
Leadership isn’t a skill we’re all born with – sometimes, it must be learned. And yet, great leadership skills are essential to the efficiency of businesses and the morale of the staff. Ask yourself. Do your subordinates respect you as a leader? Do they admire you? Are you approachable, fair and open? Here are a few of the top complaints about poor leaders and our tips to ensure you don’t become one.
because they can’t admit when something is wrong. Overcome it by starting your day with a motto: I will put my pride aside. Write it on a sticky note and stick it on your computer screen, your work folder or the back of your phone. The next time someone brings up a concern, repeat your motto before answering; I will put my pride aside. Commit to never letting your personal feelings get in the way of progress.
My boss is controlling.
My boss is never satisfied.
A controlling leader makes all the decisions, no one else’s opinion matters and input from the staff is never heard. Overcome it by holding a meeting once a week specifically for comments, concerns or suggestions. Think your staff might feel uncomfortable speaking up in front of the group? Leave a comments box in the break room or bathroom where others can quietly slip in their thoughts. Still not getting any feedback? Switch a solid box for a clear one and secretly add a few comments of your own. If your staff sees messages already inside, they may feel more confident leaving some, too.
An unsatisfied leader doesn’t care how large the win is – they’re always asking “What’s next?” Overcome it by taking time to celebrate your staff’s achievements. Did you close a big contract or meet your monthly sales goals? Buy a cake and some balloons and give your team a well-earned break. It will boost their spirits and make them more eager to hit the next milestone.
My boss is defensive – they take everything personally. A defensive leader challenges every challenge. They refuse to listen to issues 14 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
My boss sits behind their desk playing games all day. A lazy boss expects others to pull all the weight and contributes nothing themselves. Overcome it with the phrase, “How can I help?” Say it as often as you can, and don’t let the size of the task deter you; no leader is too great to help file paperwork or run to the post office. Not only will your staff
appreciate the help, but you may learn a thing or two about the inner workings of your office.
My boss is afraid of change. A stuck leader loves routine and structure – so much so that they can’t move forward. Overcome it by imagining what it will be like when things go right, not what could go wrong. Each opportunity for change may seem frightening, but you must set those fears aside if you want to succeed. For instance, does the company need to update their computer software? Think positively. New computer software may be hard to learn at first, but once you get used to it, you’ll be able to process data twice as fast and your company will gain efficiency.
My boss is nice – a little too nice. A fearful boss is afraid to hurt others’ feelings and wants to please everyone. While their intentions may be good, a strong leader has to put their foot down from time to time – everyone can’t always get their way. Overcome it by listening to both sides of an issue, then making the final decision alone in your office. Solitude may bring the clarity you need to make the right choice and will remove the influential sight of your staff’s expectant faces.
It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up. Vince Lombardi

By Leil Lowndes It's natural to assume people would feel friendlier if you use their nickname. But be careful! A lot of people prefer their more formal name. For instance, if someone you meet has a name which usually has a nickname (like Bob for Robert, Lou for Louis, Liz for Elizabeth, or Candy for Candace) DON’T use it until you’re sure THEY do. It distances you from the person and they can be offended. For more great tips like this, visit www.lowndes.com

My friends know that I’m a big “fake it ‘till you make it” advocate, especially when it comes to exuding confidence. It makes sense because your mind and body strive to agree. (You Neuroscience buffs know it as “cognitive consistency.”) So if your mind tells you that you’re anxious, your body acts accordingly. Happily, the reverse is also true. When your body constantly ACTS confident, real self-assurance follows. Here are a few tips. By Leil Lowndes
Little Tricks to Look More
Confident
1) When entering a superior's office, don't hover by the door. The closer you come to their desk, the more confidence you display.
4) Be the last to break eye contact when passing someone in the hall.
2) When going through a large door or open double doors, don't walk on one side. Stride straight through the middle.
5) Here’s one of my favorites. When you agree with someone, nod your head UP from neutral (jaw parallel to the floor). Nodding down from parallel looks more subservient.
3) Entering a party or gathering, head for the dead center of the room. That’s where self-assured people instinctively gravitate.
6) In a social gathering, choose the highest chair. If it's a business meeting, though, don't sit higher than the boss!
12 Flourish Magazine | June/2014
7) At a table meeting, go for the chair directly to the right of the most important person at the meeting. 8) Confident people's bodies occupy more space. Insecure people’s take as little space as possible as if to say, "Excuse me for taking up this much of the earth." So make larger gestures. Men can put one arm up on the back of the sofa or seat.
9) Gentlemen, to look like a leader, swing your arms more significantly when you walk. And ladies, square your body toward the person you're talking to. And beware of smiling TOO much. 10) And, of course, need I even mention posture? Think of slumping as the “Whatever you say, Sir” position and stand tall.

Cursing in the Workplace is a
Lose-Lose Strategy for Women By Susan T. Spencer, briefcaseessentials.com Do you curse at work? Do you think your colleagues think it’s cool? Have any of your associates told you that they think your language is offensive? Is your use of profanity at work sending a positive or negative message about you, your values, and your leadership? Women communicate differently than men and that’s a good thing. Cursing by a male is generally accepted in the workplace while the same words, spoken by a female, are considered offensive. Using foul language to prove that you are as tough as any male is a losing strategy. Here’s why. A Woman’s way of communicating is one of her most dynamic talents. Women are natural communicators. Men listen, and women talk—to everyone. Our ability to communicate is not just about talking, we are also aware of what others are thinking. We are keen observers and instinctively notice such things as body language, facial expressions and tone of voice, which collectively give us the unique skill of perceptive communication.
As perceptive communicators we are able to tailor our message to fit the listener. This distinctive talent is forfeited when we resort to the use of foul language.
By injecting curse words into your conversation all you accomplish is to distract the listener from hearing your message. Using profanity calls into question your credibility and judgment. Although it might feel good for an instant, this foolish moment of pleasure defines you and affects your career for a lifetime—there are no take backs.

Life Coach, Motivational Speaker & Entrepreneur
If there was one word to describe Stacia Pierce, it would be this: Empowered. This award-winning life coach and entrepreneur has worked with everyone from the Hollywood elite to big-business gurus, using her contagious energy to turn obstacles into opportunities. Here, Pierce shares her best business wisdom for women.
Stacia Pierce Interview By Sarah G. Mason
Tell me a little about your background – when did you realize constant requests for private mentorship motivated me to begin success coaching. It you wanted to be a life coach? I first felt the entrepreneur bug when I was 13 years old. I’ve successfully launched and developed my own makeup line, opened a clothing store and launched an image and branding company. Once I began writing books, it opened the door to speaking engagements, so I added a speaking itinerary while running my companies. Eventually, this grew into me hosting my own women’s conference and later into my coaching business for entrepreneurs. I have always wanted to help women find their passion and profit from it. Most people just don’t know how to make this happen. They have never been taught how to do business, love it and be able to live off of it. When women left my live events they would always call back asking for more. The

was the best avenue to do what I love and help others do what they love too.
Empowerment is about being well equipped with the information and skills to accomplish your dreams and goals. Information changes the seasons of your life. Once you’ve been empowered with knowledge your confidence grows and you’re more likely to go after your dreams. Oftentimes people find themselves in a hopeless, helpless state because they lack the proper perspective to change their situation. Before you can be empowered you must first be open to change and improvement.
To be a successful entrepreneur, you must believe you can do it and that you deserve the rewards that come with it. Oftentimes people have a desire to head out on their own, but hold themselves back, searching for validation from others. You have to give yourself permission to profit. Once you start going for your dreams, you need to adopt a tenacious attitude. No matter what comes your way, never give up on your dream. Learn from your mistakes, create a new plan, get help when you need to but never give up.
All our dreams can come true – if we have the courage to pursue them. Walt Disney
“You don’t have to sacrifice your family to have a great career” What advice do you have for women who are afraid to chase their entrepreneurial dreams? Don’t be afraid to take risks. It may sound counterintuitive, but you can spend years analyzing every detail of your business plan and never pull the trigger. When intuition tells you that you have a winning idea – even if you don't know every single detail – just get going on implementing it!
What advice do you have for busy women and moms about finding balance between work and family? Finding balance is being able to make adjustments to do what is essential at the time. It is incorporating what has to be done with what you want to get done. For example, when balancing work and family, you may have to get done with your projects during the week then take a day to hike or garden on the weekend. Go out with the kids and really enjoy that moment. If you’re feeling imbalanced, creating a plan can be life changing. Writing out a strategy to get your work done or even just creating a simple to-do list gives you a feeling of focus. You can map out everything in your life from an exotic vacation to time with family to a new business venture. Plans bring balance because you have a road map to accomplish all that you want to get done. You’re more likely to do what is written. Reviewing your plans keeps you on track and reminds you of other commitments that you should give attention to.
What’s the biggest thing that holds women back from starting their own business?
When I started, I had to first overcome the struggle of choosing between being a stay-at-home mom or pursuing my dreams of entrepreneurship. Choosing between family and a career is something that many women struggle with. In the mid-to-late ‘90’s’ when I started my conference and workshops, women were looking for someone to show them how to pursue purpose and go after their dreams. My entire platform is built on balancing it all, a successful career, great relationships and family. By eliminating the excuses and believing in yourself, anyone can overcome this limiting way of thinking. You don’t have to sacrifice your family to have a great career and vice versa. Yes, it requires hard work and the help of others to pull it off. Learn to ignore the guilt-ridden feelings that you are doing your children and family an injustice because you want to start a business. You can make it a family affair. Use your business as a way to empower your children to go after their own dreams as well.
Have you seen a change in the men to women ratio in the business world? Now more than ever before women are launching businesses. I think it’s because of the enticing lure of doing what you love and being with the ones you love more often. Many women become at-home entrepreneurs so that they can have a flexible schedule and be there for the family. Plus, it’s so easy now to run a profitable online business from home. Online marketing is very cost effective and efficient with all the social media platforms available to reach your target audience.

Uh-oh, it seems like you’ve got a few things to work on. Somewhere down the road, you and your partner lost sight of all the reasons you fell in love. Instead of caring about and supporting each other, you tend to spend more time butting heads. Sit down and talk to your partner seriously about your relationship, and be sure to discuss things in an open, loving way. Bring up those little things he does that bother you, but don’t ignore your own faults, either. A little communication can go a long way.
If you answered mostly B: Make way for the happy couple! You’re comfortable together and it shows. Your relationship is one big, exciting adventure – and you both love it! By maintaining that open, fun-loving connection with your partner, you can be sure that happiness will last as long as you both shall live.
If you answered mostly C: You’re just coasting along. Things aren’t bad, but they aren’t great either. With work, kids and a mortgage to pay, love just isn’t your number one priority right now. And yet, a stressful day and a hectic work schedule is no excuse to let your Mr. Right fade into the shadows. You two are still committed to each other and his support can really make a difference! Take some time to reconnect. Write him a surprise love note inviting him to a romantic dinner for just the two of you. A break from work and a little quality time is exactly what you need to get the feelings flowing once more. If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts. Albert Einstein
INSIDER TIPS FOR
Summer Travel Are you looking forward to a relaxing summer vacation with the family but just aren’t sure where to go, who to talk to and how to book? We asked priceline.com travel expert Kim Mance for some savvy travel tips to make your next vacation a breeze!
Be savvy: Be flexible: Consider flying into smaller airports near your destination rather than the major city. Long Beach rather than LAX for instance. Also, know the seasons that airfares increase and don’t reserve a flight in peak travel times.
Score luxury for less: Priceline has a sleek app that allows you to book rooms directly. You can also find an "Express Deal," which lets you book a deeply discounted room without bidding for it — even for last-minute bookings. How does it work? You’ll be given the general location of the hotel, how many stars it has and an overall rating from travelers who've been there before, but you won’t know the actual name until after booking.

Research tour operators and guides before hiring them. If a site like TripAdvisor or Trippy gives a guide mostly negative reviews, that’s very telling. Many times, you’ll be approached by independent guides once you arrive in a city’s airport, train station or ferry port. They can actually be a helpful way to see a city and offer affordable rates, but keep in mind they may be receiving kickbacks from restaurants, shops and attractions along the way.
Consider a vacation rental: Rather than staying in a touristy neighborhood at a hotel, a vacation rental allows you to stay in an area that provides a totally different view of a destination. It also lets you have a leisurely coffee or breakfast before getting ready for the day since a kitchen is often included, and local owners are usually full of great info for exploring the area.
