How to Be Less Materialistic They say that those who do are happier than those who buy, but that doesn’t mean you’re ready to trade your shiny new Jimmy Choo’s for a pair of used sneakers and an open road – or does it? In your quest for happiness, it’s time to give materialism the boot. Once you stop assigning value to objects or assessing your life according to what you own, you may be surprised by the joy that follows.
Rule #1 – Shopping Is Not a Pastime Malls and shopping plazas have been built to entertain you, so it’s no wonder you’re eager to gather your girlfriends and go on a shopping spree. The problem is that this kind of mindset puts objects at the center of your attention. Stop heading out to spend money just because you’re bored; instead, why not go the beach, take a hike or have a picnic with friends? If you do need something at the store, go in, buy it and get out – no splurge spending allowed!
Rule #2 – Splurges Can Wait OK, no splurges, but what about that super cute purse that caught your eye? If you think you found something you just have to have, 6

put it on a 30-day list. In 30 days, revisit the list and see if it’s something you still want or need. By waiting a month, you’ll be able to decide with clarity whether or not each item is really worth buying.
Rule #3 – Limit TV, Magazines and Internet Browsing There’s a reason you’re tempted to spend, spend, spend – companies are telling you that you have to. You’re constantly surrounded by beautiful pictures of men and women with designer clothes, jewelry, shoes, cookware and furniture all screaming “You must buy me to fit in and be happy!” Don’t listen to them. Block yourself from that influence. You’ve got a band to see tonight, a dog to take to the park and new friends to make at the art fair; you don’t have time for useless marketing ploys.
Rule #4 – Put the Environment First Going green and having stuff isn’t compatible, so put the environment first! Recognize the connection between climate change and ever-expanding garbage dumps, fast cars and
air pollution, bottled water and ruined rivers and lakes. Make recycling your new hobby to help you see how silly it is to assign value to objects – they’ll all end up in the trash sooner or later, after all.
Rule #5 – Use the Trash to Gain Perspective One reason materialism can’t lead to long-term happiness is because material things wear over time. You bought those jeans pristine and new, but after awhile they wear, tear and fade. Slowly, you’ll watch each and every one of your belongings do the same. Fine china breaks, fast engines stall, clothing rips. If ever you feel the urge to spend fruitlessly, take a quick glance at your trashcan – that’s where everything will end up in the end, so is it really worth it?
Rule #6 – Get a Hobby Read a book, learn to paint, take a hike, master chess, practice piano, visit relatives, volunteer, meet your neighbors, adopt a dog, write a story, learn to cook, attend local workshops, play a game of pick-up basketball, and the list goes on. Live happily and don’t make greedy, emotional or valued attachment to anything material. Do this, and you will set yourself free from materialism. Moral indignation is jealousy with a halo. H. G. Winter may be the season of joy, but it’s also high season for heart attacks. Research from countries and regions around the world indicates that death from cardiovascular diseases are more common during winter months regardless of climate. So, what’s behind the sudden spike? Traditional Chinese medicine sheds some light on this topic. TCM has a ďŹ ve-element theory that connects our internal organs, sense organs, tissues, seasons, tastes and emotions all together. Fire is the symbol we assign to the heart, small intestines, tongue, blood vessels, summer, bitter food and joy. Conversely, water is the symbol for kidneys, urinary bladder, ears, bone, winter, salty food and fear. According to the ďŹ ve element theory, winter is dominated by water, which has the power to destroy ďŹ re (as we can observe in the nature). Therefore, patients with cardiovascular conditions are vulnerable in the winter since their ďŹ re (heart) is already dim. So what can we do to prevent heart attack or stroke? The key idea is to maintain or increase the heat (ďŹ re) within our body. In TCM, the heart is like the Sun. It not only pumps blood into the vessels but also, more importantly, creates all the heat for the body. As the heat increases, the blood ow increases too. As a result, our blood can carry away more waste, plaque or atheroma. In TCM, this is the true heart attack prevention method.
"U )PNF 3FNFEJFT The ďŹ rst way to increase heat is to stop drinking cold drinks, and the reason is simple. The body has to heat up all food and drink in order to digest, process and absorb it, thus the body wastes more energy on warming up the cold stuff. You would not pour a glass of ice water into your running car engine, so why do it to your heart? Second, try to bring the heat back with natural spices. Many spices are known to have warm properties that beneďŹ t the heart. Cinnamon, for example, is the most common and effective cabinet herb for ADVERTISEMENT

boosting heat. Why not start and end your day with a cup of cinnamon and ginger tea? Bundling up is always the best ďŹ rst step, but allowing your body to self-creat heat is the real answer to avoid heart attack and stroke.

&BSMZ XBSOJOH TJHOT There are six little-known warning signs of oncoming heart trouble that will help you identify the problem before it ares up. The ďŹ rst and most important sign is the appearance of an earlobe crease. You’ll notice a diagonal crease on one or both ears (it looks like an earring has been ripped out of the ear) that begins at the bottom of the ear opening and reaches diagonally across the earlobe to the tip. It can show up long before a heart attack occurs. It is especially indicative for people under age of 40. The second warning sign is in the veins under the tongue. If the veins are dark and thick, your blood is too thick and metabolism too slow. Third, you might notice a tingling sensation or numbness in your hands or feet. Cold hands and feet signal a weak heart function since the heat created by the heart is failing to reach the furthest places from it. The forth is irregular

Can you tell me a little about your background and why you started thinkThin? I started off modeling in Tokyo and traveled for about 15 years. I started to notice how hard it was to find heathy food to eat on the go. So I took my grandmothers’ cookie and peanut butter brownie recipes and started pulling out the sugar and gluten. I would take them to all the modeling gigs, and soon all the models were asking me to bring more! When I found that I was cooking more than anything else, I thought, maybe there’s something to this. Eventually, I presented my products to Trader Joes, and they actually took it! It was the only bar on the market that had no sugar but high protein. His ignorance is encyclopedic. Abba Eban

Talk to me a little about how you balance your social life, work and fitness schedule all while maintaining your diet. Because it is difficult! (Laughs). I’m only laughing because we get so creative here. We just moved into a new complex and we got some yoga balls for the employees to use as seats, just so they can incorporate balance and fitness into their day. Try it at your office: you won’t believe how hard it is on your stomach muscles! Most importantly, keep in mind how you’re fueling your body. Women often don’t realize how important protein really is for how they feel. Since our brand’s mission is to empower women, all our products have high protein – 20 grams or 10 or more – and we also add fiber. It’s a blend that caters to the positive thinking.
And how do you balance work and family? Balance is about mind and body. It’s not just about one or the other – it’s the combination of both. I would say the most important thing is to be aware of when you’re out of balance: physically and mentally. Pay attention to it. Acknowledge it. Then you can improve it.
It’s really hard! I have a 15-year-old daughter and a son who is 11, and I honestly don’t think there is a special ingredient to keep a work-life balance. I balance my time by making sure that when the kids come home from school, I have that hour to sit down and have a snack with them. All I’m doing then is focusing on them. Then they go and do homework until dinner. Dinner is really important to us – it always has been in my life – so I always make sure we sit down to dinner every night.
What are some ideas for a nocook or easy-to-cook meal for working moms? Oh there are so many great recipes. I do a lot of chicken, and a lot of things in the crock pot. Put in some chicken breasts, throw in some tomato sauce, let it cook for the day and you come home and serve it over rice or quinoa pasta for a proteinpacked meal.
When I go out for groceries, one thing I try to do is stay to the perimeter of the store where all the fruits, vegetables, meats and diary are. What other tips can you give us for navigating grocery stores? Definitely go to the produce first because it sets you on a healthy path for the rest of the trip. I fill half my cart with fruits and vegetables. I like to go to a butcher for most of my meats, but there’s great ways of incorporating things like sliced roast beef, which I sometimes put on top of an arugula salad for something quick with a little oil and vinegar (I’m an oil fanatic!). Then you stay away from so much of the packaged food. I love to dig into labels, and there’s so much at a natural health food store that you can do that’s different from a conventional grocery.
So what’s up next for you? I’m expanding my focus now with my new website (lizannefalsetto. com) which has great recipes, brand discounts, 10-minute workouts and other wellness tips that you can incorporate into your life. My ultimate goal in ten years is to raise enough money to build a wellness hospital. That’s what I hope my legacy will be – the second legacy of my life!

Four questions to ask yourself before making a career shift
around the start of the new year, many of us are in the mood for change. If the first item on your to-do list is jumping tracks with your career, take a moment to answer each of the following questions and see if you’re truly ready for the switch.
how ow long have i been here? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Baby Boomers held an average of 11.3 different jobs between the ages of 18 and 46, while younger generations are expected to hold even more. On the one hand, this means you shouldn’t panic over switching your direction, but on the other it indicates a migrant tendency among workers in general that may or may not lead you on to greener pastures. In general, if you have worked for a company for less than a year you should probably stay where you are. Any less tells future employers that you are a risky investment of their time and training. Similarly, staying on past the one-year mark gives your current employer thorough enough knowledge of your work and character to give you that stellar reference you deserve.
Are my expectations really realistic? According to US News, money is the number one reason people change jobs. Before you walk out in search of a better pay check, make sure your expectations are consistent with the market. Resources abound for the interrogative worker, and websites like bls.gov and glassceiling.com allow you to find industry averages for your job description within your region. If you’re planning a drastic transition from one type of career to another, research should also play an important role in your decision making process. Find out what you can realistically expect from that industry in terms of salary, benefits and style of living. If you can, get someone on the phone 12 Flourish Magazine | January/2015

who has been in the field you’re interested in for years, and ask them why most people leave it.
is this really about work? When we feel dissatisfied, we tend to amalgamate all the small areas of discontent in our lives and blame them on a single source of unhappiness. As you contemplate your career change, take stock of the reasons making you want to quit and decide if those reasons can rightfully be held responsible for your feeling of unrest. Identify any other internal struggles that you’re facing and question whether they might be informing your decision more than you think. As a general rule, avoid the urge to make big employment decisions immediately before and after major life changes, which tend to color our decisions with more speculation and emotion than concrete fact. Holding on to employment during times of transition can actually provide continuity amidst other struggles and storms. And at worst, giving a few more months to our current job can confirm our suspicions with hard evidence that will inform our decisions later.
have i really given this a chance? Finally, while we assume that quitting is a leap of faith, sometimes it takes more courage to stay and attempt to make things better. Before you pull the plug on your profession, talk with your employer and others in the industry to see if the problems you are facing are necessary facets of the job or if there are steps you can take to improve them. Making a career change can be a positive and invigorating decision so long as it’s carefully planned. Take the time to scrutinize your current problems and your future hopes before leaping into or out of any one career path. Then, when you’re ready to leap, you can do so with your conscience clear!

Multitasking might ight cost cost You We often think of multitasking as a strength in our fast-paced world, but science says otherwise. Some studies now suggest that those who regularly multitask significantly lower their performance capabilities.
Sort, remember, switch Stanford researchers sought to discover whether people who self-report an aptitude for multitasking held any advantage over their single-task oriented peers. After putting 100 students through three carefully designed tests, they found the opposite to be true. Each test analyzed a particular skill typically associated with capable multitaskers: information sorting, short-term memory and ability to transition quickly between tasks. In each instance, those who avoided media multitasking in general outscored habitual multitaskers by a wide margin.

Unfortunately, the more information we take in, the harder it becomes for us to pick out what’s important. “[Multitaskers] are suckers for irrelevancy,” said researcher Clifford Nass to Stanford News. “Everything distracts them.”

Resist the urge to check your phone unless it’s absolutely necessary, and when you’re online avoid the urge to “link” yourself away from your task at hand. By refusing to multitask, you actually empower yourself to take on more tasks, more efficiently and in less time than if you tried to do everything at once!

You come home from a long day at the office, settle down on the couch and log into Facebook to check in with your friends. Plastered on your front page you see engagements, babies, new jobs and dream vacations. Instead of feeling connected to your “friends,” all you feel is envious and stressed that your life is not up to par. It’s easy to get sucked into the trap of comparing yourself to others, especially now that everyone and their grandmother has a Facebook page. Looks can be deceiving, though, and those tweets and Instagram shots are rarely indicative of that person’s real life. So how do you keep them from affecting you?
Know what you’re seeing The number one thing to keep in mind is that people’s social media posts are almost 14 Flourish Magazine | January/2015

always idealized versions of what’s happening in their lives. As Steve Furtick once succinctly put, “the reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with someone else’s highlight reel.” Your friend might actually be in Hawaii, but she probably won’t post pictures of that fight she had with her husband or the hour they spent waiting for luggage. Your cousin might post about his great new job, but privately feel frustrated that the pay is not as high as he hoped it would be.
Remember the good things If you stop and glance over your own social media accounts, I bet you’ll realize that there are probably people out there jealous of YOUR life! Did you just cook a delicious meal or spend a wonderful family vacation in the
mountains? You might be upset that you don’t have a partner to go home to, but your married friends might be green with envy over your independence or your glamorous social life. Everyone has good and bad things occurring every day; the trick is to focus on the positive things that are happening to you at any point in time.
Spend more time face to face If you find that you can’t get a handle on the insecure feelings prompted by Facebook or Twitter, take a break from social media sites altogether and spend more time with friends face-to-face. Getting out from behind the computer can help you focus your attention on the real world, leaving you less time to stress over negative comparisons. Hanging out with your friends or family can also remind you how multifaceted their lives truly are. So the next time you feel the urge to compare yourself to someone on the internet, take a minute to look over your own highlight reel and remember how wonderful your life is.

why midwives are on the rise Evidence has continued to mount in recent years documenting the benefits of supplementing your obstetrician’s care with the services of a midwife. In 2011, the Systematic Review of Advanced Practices Nurse Outcomes revealed that women at low risk for birthing complications required fewer cesareans and less medical intervention when attended by CNMs. Similarly, in the 2014 State of the World’s Midwifery report (SoWMy), health experts agree that midwives provide a “best buy” for women around the world based on lives saved (mother and baby) and surgical interventions avoided.
The slow but steady return of midwives can also be attributed to the feeling that many women are being underserved by maternity wards around the U.S. Research from the Boston University School of Public Health recently showed that the U.S. ranks highest in neonatal mortality rates among similarly sized industrial countries, while falling fourth in maternal mortality. Furthermore, the SoWMy report indicates that 50 percent of U.S. counties lack an ob-gyn, and women in rural communities are more likely than not to live 30 minutes removed from hospitals offering perinatal services.

Last month, I boasted about how my pregnancy has been completely positive. I put a lot of time and energy into eating healthy, exercising and simply focusing on how lucky I am to bring another human life into the world! I did several things during those first six months to ensure that I had an effortless (even glamorous!) pregnancy. Read one to learn my five favorite tips so that you too can have a pampered pregnancy! no Alcohol? no problem!

I have to admit, I enjoy wine. Red or white, I miss it a lot, especially when cooking dinner or on a beautiful summer Sunday afternoon. So how did this frequent wine taster survive? With the help of nonalcoholic drinks. I visited the beverage aisle in my grocery store every few weeks to pick up some non-alcoholic beer and wine. I also picked up sparkling grape juice in several varieties and poured it into my favorite wine glass as I prepared dinner or settled down in the evening while I tuned into my favorite shows. I must say, it helped curved my cravings and didn’t leave me out of the social loop as my friends and family celebrated Independence Day.
At 24 weeks, I started to look noticeably pregnant. My bump is undeniable and I’ve embraced it. However, leading up to this “popping” point; I invested in several pairs of compression panties. They had a strong yet stretchy stomach panel that helped smooth out any lumps or bumps on my tummy, hips and rear, and they helped keep me in my regular clothes without the aid of a belly band or pant extender. They gave me comfort, confidence and got me lots of complements (“You’re five months pregnant? I’d never know!”).
Buy Stock in cocoa Butter As soon as I got a positive result on my pregnancy test, I started applying cocoa butter to my skin. Not just once a day, but twice a day. I have stuck to this routine religiously and am happy to report that I have zero stretch marks. Amp Up Your Accessories I am a self-proclaimed shopaholic, so I was definitely bummed when I couldn’t go on my weekend shopping sprees like I used to since my body is changing to prepare for D-day (delivery day). Instead, I really played up the items that I currently owned (and still fit in) with new accessories. I added bright pops of color in the form of jewelry and picked up several pairs of discounted designer shoes. These items could still be worn post-baby and allowed me to keep on shopping!

Develop an All About me Bedtime Routine Going to bed is probably one of my favorite times of the day (for obvious reasons). Not only did it give my tired body a chance to rest, but it has become a quiet time that doesn’t involve decorating the nursery, picking up groceries, tending to my dogs and husband; it is a time that is just for me! I purchased brand new linens and a luxurious duvet cover, as well as a body pillow to ensure a satisfying slumber. I opted for soft and silky pajamas and spa socks and set out several organic lotions that I could apply before bed (don’t forget your feet!). I even placed some new perfume that I picked up on my night stand to give myself a spritz before sleeping. these five ideas may seem simple; but they completely changed the way that I look and feel thus far. again, I believe it’s important to remain positive, proactive and posh throughout your nine months. You are doing so much to prepare for the new addition to your family and your body is working extremely hard to grow and nourish your baby; it can be easy to forget about treating yourself to something fabulous each and every day. According to Kaiser Obstetrician Kim Vesco, lead researcher of a multi-year pregnancy study, about half the women who get pregnant are overweight or obese at the start of their term. Obesity during pregnancy can lead to large-for-gestational age babies, who stand a greater risk of experiencing delivery complications. Similarly, difficulties like preeclampsia, diabetes, birthing injuries and increased likelihood of C-sections have been linked to excessive weight gain during pregnancy.

benefits from continuing in healthy weight loss programs during their term, all of which included attending weekly support group meetings. Two weeks after delivery, the women in the weight-loss group had lost six pounds since the start of their pregnancy.

However, when it comes to the big day, brides are more than willing to splurge. After you’ve tied the knot, who says your gown has to gather dust in the attic? Get creative and give your wedding dress a new meaning. Not only will you repurpose your dress, but the cash you dropped will seem like less of a burden.
Trash It “Trashing” wedding dresses is a popular trend. Have a nature-inspired photo shoot at your favorite outdoor locations. Grab some props, hire a professional and get the groom involved! A little ocean water never hurt a wedding dress, right?
Wear It Again Women have gotten creative by re-wearing their wedding dresses. Some have transformed them into other articles of clothing by hemming them into a short dress or sewing a simple bustier. Brides have also worn their dresses on their anniversaries as a reminder of the special day.

Whether you’re working with a brand new puppy or a pooch who’s a bit longer in the tooth, use these tips to make the most of your training time.
Stage one - puppy Love Puppies are so wonderful and cuddly that sometimes it’s easy to start things that might be hard to finish. For example, you might love your new puppy sleeping in bed with you now, but will you still feel the same way when he grows to take up a much larger space? And while jumping onto guests for attention is adorable at this age, it’s not so adorable when your furry one grows large enough to knock your guests to the floor with his happy jumps. It is confusing for dogs when rules change, so keep things consistent. Be proactive by using your training time to reinforce the behaviors you want and eliminate those you don’t.
Stage two – Dog Days Working with older puppies can be very rewarding for both the owner and the dog. Dogs thrive on pleasing their masters, so nothing makes them happier than seeing you happy! When working with your older puppy, remember to keep your commands quick and 24 Flourish Magazine | January/2015

clear. “Sit” and “Lay down” are much better than “Ok, Buddy, sit for Mama. You can do it, sit for Mama.” As soon as your puppy complies, reward him with a treat or pat. This will cue your puppy that he’s doing the right thing to make you happy, which will help him remember what to do in the future. Of course, with these fun days also come the troublesome days of chewed shoes or scratched doors. Remember to keep your words consistent – “No. Bad,” for example. If your puppy seems a bit hardheaded, try slapping your hand with a rolled up newspaper. Dogs seem to dislike the sound, and it helps focus their attention. Never hit your puppy with a hand or anything else.
Stage three - old Dogs – new Tricks It’s true, you CAN teach old dogs new tricks! Despite the old adage, mature dogs are often more receptive to training sessions, as they are older and less impulsive than wiggly puppies. If you’re bringing home an adult dog for the first time (if you’ve recently adopted from a shelter or rescue, for example) give your dog plenty of time to adjust to your home before beginning any intensive training
sessions. Your dog will need time to get used to your voice and your daily habits. However, if you find that you need to housebreak your older dog, use a crate for training from day 1, just as you would with a puppy. When you are not home, place the dog in the crate to help him learn when and where to relieve himself. Adult dogs normally catch onto this lesson quickly. When working with adult dogs, it’s important to remember that positive reinforcement is best – especially when trying to break a bad habit that you or a former owner may have instilled. Offer firm, consistent commands, and reward your dog when he performs well. Remember, not all rewards have to be edible. Gloomy weather got the kids stuck inside? Here are a few fresh ideas that will breathe new life into rainy days. Replace reading with acting. Though reading is great for quiet time, you’ve got pent-up energy to burn! Have the kids pick their favorite short story and get ready for lights, camera, action. In this activity, kids reenact a story by creating costumes for each character and dramatizing each page. Gather arts and crafts supplies to create scenery and fun outfits, and pull out the video camera for a true “movie” feel. tIP: don’t worry about following your storybook to a t – improvisation is the most fun, anyway! Replace the “you’re getting warmer/colder game” with a treasure hunt. Though we all love games like “warmer/colder” and hide-and-seek, a treasure hunt is sure to keep kids engaged. In this activity, an adult makes a set of clues for the players to follow. Each clue leads to the next until kids finally find the treasure! (We’re thinking popcorn, a silver dollar or movie tickets). Alternatively, have the kids make clues for you and watch their excitement as you get closer to the prize. tIP: Seal clues in envelopes marked “1 out of 5,” Give me a museum and I’ll fill it. Though we can’t deny the all-around fun of some good ol’ Player 1 vs. Player 2, take some time away from the TV with a fun new word game such as “Yes, and…monster!” In this game, invent an imaginary monster and then let each person add a new characteristic to the monster’s description. Each new idea should start excitedly with “Yes, and…” to build on what’s already been created. IP: Instead of just creating the monster aloud tIP: with descriptive words, start by drawing a rough sketch of your best on paper and taking turns adding funny characteristics like horns, three eyes and a hairy tail!

If they slip up and are late, make them responsible for paying their fines. While it’s best for children to read books on their reading levels, let this experience be your child’s choice, not yours. If they want to check out easy picture books, let them. If they want to try books that appear too difficult for them, let them. Give them the freedom to experiment and discover the worlds available through the written word.
Take note of the things your child is reading and use every opportunity you can find to connect those books to their lives. For example, if your child is reading Charlotte’s Web, arrange to visit a local farm or petting zoo to see the animals for yourselves. If you can’t find a real world connection, read the book yourself and engage your child in discussions about it. Look for ways to bring the book to life.

If your child has low self-esteem, you might feel the urge to build them up with compliments and exaggerated praise. However, some studies now suggest that well-intended words of encouragement can overshoot the mark when it comes to reassuring adolescents, causing more harm than good.
Flattery fools no one In a recent study published in the journal Psychological Science, scholars sought to discover the effect of inflated praise on young people. Inflated praise amounts to any compliment that exceeds reality. For instance, instead of “you did well,” you might say, “you did extraordinarily well.” Unfortunately, researchers found that adolescents with low self-esteem not only showed adverse responses to inflated praise, but they were also twice as likely to receive it from their caretakers or parents. Keep it real If your child suffers from low self-esteem, resist the impulse to slather them with exaggerated applause. Instead, adhere to these three rules for reining in your lauding and gearing it toward your child’s success. • Be genuine.- Praise your child for the things they actually do well, and don’t pretend about the things they do not. • Empower, don’t entitle. Restrict your praise to things that are within your child’s power to change. • Watch your phrasing -You may feel tempted to pep up a compliment with a few extra adjectives, but hold back. Twenties Four truths I wish I’d known before becoming a 20-something
It’s no secret that parenting teens is tough. Yet while previous generations could count on their kids settling down sometime in their early 20s, millennials have expanded what psychologist Jeffery Arnett famously dubbed their “emerging adulthood” to include the better part of their third decade on earth.
Teach your teen early on that success, however small or large, is always selfdetermined. Remind them in the midst of every high-school battle that they have to learn to be their own judge and jury, even as they soak up the wisdom of mentors around them.
As a millennial myself, I know from experience that getting your teenager past their angst and ennui requires a different approach from mere endurance. You may not be able to shorten your young adult’s prolonged adolescence, but there are a few truths I wish I had known going into my odyssey years that can make your child’s 20s less uncertain, and more fulfilling.
Truth #2: The road is not straight
Truth #1: You define “Success” The hardest part of living through your 20s is losing the audience of your parents, teachers and community, who thus far in your life have applauded your successes and lamented your failures. One of the many critiques volleyed at young people today is that we are unwilling to commit to our futures – professionally, personally and financially. Everything from choosing a career to having kids seems to take longer for Generation Y, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Make your teen well aware of the meandering path that might lay before them and help them prepare to navigate it effectively. Encourage them to think ahead and plan for the future by writing down (and interrogating) their immediate, short term and long term goals, all the while reminding them that the road to success might not be as linear as they would like.
Parenting requires setting limits, so much so that having a reclusive teen might seem like a blessing. However, as millennials wait for marriage, kids and a definitive career, we typically find ourselves with an unprecedented amount of free-time – time we either spend engaged in enriching travel and experiences, or lost in television and video games. Let your teen learn to live proactively in the space outside of your control while you’re still around for support, and make sure they know that even though it scares you, you want them to embrace their independence.
Truth #4: The Media wants YOU You’re not the only one fighting to influence your teen as they enter the adult world. While your vested interest is in their wellbeing, not every marketing campaign, program or television series can say the same. Make your child aware that as young consumers, they are often the center of the target towards which advertisements are aimed. Similarly, encourage them to constantly consider the messages of the television and media outlets they consume, and to question whether those sources are improving their self-image or tearing it down. Make the most of the time before your child leaves the nest, as a 2013 study in the Journal of Child and Family Studies uncovered that helicopter parenting after high school usually does more harm than good. By thinking about the new challenges facing millennials, you can start preparing your child to take on their twenties with confidence and aplomb.

In the midst of ignoring the cynics, don’t forget that the best books often come recommended. If a friend and you have the same taste in literature, ask her what’s she’s currently reading. Skip the back cover blurb If you’re in the habit of picking up a book, reading the excerpt on the back and setting it down again, there’s a better way. Though these short synopses can be a small help, it gives no indication of the author’s tone, tense or style. Instead, flip a book open and read the first few pages, or skip to the middle and do the same.
It wasn’t until recently that I discovered my love for winter. Growing up, I’d adored sundresses and beach days – now I appreciate the cozy comforts of warm blankets and book days. When the air turns chilly and the days grow short, there’s nothing better than curling up with a great novel. Choosing what to read next, however, has never been easy.

The big carts on wheels. The lightly misted vegetables. The comfortable music. To you, these things are just a part of any normal grocery shopping experience. But have you ever thought to ask why?
why do supermarkets often offer the “10 for $10” deal? “Ten cans of soup for just 10 dollars – what a deal!” But is it really? Often, sale items are clumped together in a way that makes them seem cheaper. Because of the way “10 for $10” is written and because of how sale items are often thrown together in huge, overflowing bins, consumers feel like they’re getting a ton for their buck. However, supermarkets can easily take a 90 cent can of soup and promote it with a 10 for $10 deal. It’s a buy-in-bulk trap, so always calculate individual prices of comparable items and don’t be fooled by so-called savings.

eats So, what are some healthy, low-cost meals that are both quick and easy to make at home? Here’s a great idea to get you started: Vegetable lasagna. This dish costs about $1.73 per serving and is packed with nutrient-dense veggies like mushrooms and spinach. Plus, at only 322 calories per plate, it won’t add inches to your waist! When it comes to eating healthy, there’s one big barrier that stands in our way – the cost. After all, you have to pay a premium for fresh, whole foods and organic varieties, right? Wrong. For years we’ve been led to believe that a healthy diet comes with a hefty price tag, but a recent Harvard study turns this theory on its head. According to Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health, this so-called “wisdom” had never been closely assessed. To uncover the truth, Dr. Mozaffarian and his colleagues examined over 27 studies from 10 different developed countries that looked at the retail price of food grouped by healthfulness. As it turns out, the cost different between a healthy diet – one rich in vegetables, nuts and fruits – and an unhealthy one – heavy on processed foods and meat – is only about $1.50 per day. For some, that extra $548 per year may seem a bit steep. After all, that’s an extra $2,200 per year to feed a family of four their daily dose of fruits and veggies. And yet, that’s nothing compared to the cost of heart disease or diabetes, which can add up to

hundreds of thousands of dollars over your lifetime. According to researchers and many individuals, the extra upfront cost is well worth the future savings and wellbeing. Dr. Mozaffarian’s findings bring up another widespread myth: That fast food is cheaper than store-bought, home-cooked meals. Though eating out at a fast food joint may be less costly than dining at a sit down restaurant, by no means does this make it cheaper all-around. A typical fast food order for a family of four – two Big Macs, a cheeseburger, six chicken McNuggets, four fries and four sodas, for instance – costs about $28 at McDonalds. Conversely, you can serve a roasted chicken with vegetables and a salad for the same number of people for about $14 at home.
Vegetable Lasagna You’ll need:
• 8 ounces dried lasagna noodles (9 or 10 noodles) • 2 eggs, beaten • 2 cups cream-style cottage cheese • 1 15-ounce carton ricotta cheese • 2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning, crushed • 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms • 1 cup chopped onion (1 large) • 4 cloves garlic, minced • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • ½ teaspoon black pepper • 1–1/4 cups milk • 1 10-ounce package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and thoroughly drained • 1 10-ounce package frozen chopped broccoli, thawed and thoroughly drained • 1 cup-shredded carrot • 3/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese (3 ounces) • 1 8-ounce package shredded mozzarella cheese (2 cups) 1) Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions. Drain; set aside. 2) In a medium bowl combine eggs, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, and Italian seasoning. Set aside. 3) In a large skillet cook mushrooms, onion, and garlic in hot oil until tender. Stir in the flour and pepper; add milk all at once. Cook and stir until slightly thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in the spinach, broccoli, carrot, and 1/2 cup of the Parmesan cheese. 4) To assemble, in a greased 3-quart rectangular baking dish, layer one-third of the noodles, folding or cutting to fit, if necessary. Spread with one-third of the cottage cheese mixture, then one-third of the vegetable mixture. Sprinkle with one-third of the mozzarella. Repeat the layers twice. Sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. 5) Bake, uncovered, in a 350 degree F oven for 35 minutes or until heated through. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Source: Yummly.com

There was a time when I couldn’t fathom ever “going vegan.” Bacon exists, after all…And yet, the more I heard about veganism in the news and on the net, the more curious I became. What’s so special about an animal-free diet? By Kelly Herman
What differences do vegans see in their health and happiness? I began to do a little research and was surprised by what I found. The benefits of veganism are massive – overwhelmingly so. From reduced risk of disease to more beautiful skin, vegans seem to have it all. Well, maybe I’d like to try a little slice of that vegan pie; Last month I decided that I’m going vegan, too. For the past month, I’ve lived the life of an herbivore. I’d like to share my experiences with you to enlighten and inspire (and to convince meat lovers that not all vegans are preachy know-it-alls!). There’s so much information (and misinformation) that’s thrown at us each day, and sometimes being health conscious is like trying to shoot a moving target. And yet, I’ve learned a lot from this experience and I’m ready to share. Thinking about switching to veganism? Here’s my advice – don’t quit cold turkey (pun intended). Before I took the plunge, I was seriously concerned about the commitment and effort my new diet would require. In fact, I was convinced that I simply didn’t have the time. Luckily, you do have the time. You have all the time in the world. Change can begin today one baby step at a time. Here are some examples of easy maneuvers you can make:
• P ut avocado on your sandwich at lunch instead of mayonnaise. • P urchase veggie burgers from the store instead of ground beef. • Switch regular milk with almond milk. • Add extra veggies to your pizza instead of sausage. I promise, if a reformed double-baconcheeseburger-with-ranch-dressing eater can do it, you can too. Of course, it wasn’t easy. There were times when I really, really just wanted some cheese, and it’s okay to cheat every now and then. However, the more I cut out animal products from my diet, the better I felt. I slept better, lost a little weight and felt generally lighter, especially during my workouts! Running is a challenge, plain and simple. After running on and off for several years (mostly off, actually), I decided to pick it back up. New diet, new life, right? Back when I was eating whatever, I’d start running at a good pace, but after a third of a mile I’d really start to feel it. Face hot as a stove, heart hammering, legs screaming…you get it. So I’d stop, rest and do it all again. Three rounds of exhaustive work for one, measly mile.

How painful it must have been for my neighbors to watch my put-puttering around the block. Since I’ve gone vegan, however, that’s all changed. I blow through my cool down spot and run at least a mile and a half without stopping – for me, that’s a huge change! Going vegan is transforming my body and my health, and the results are tangible. Not only that, but the more I do it, the more I want to do it. Many of my friends congratulate me on my willpower, but they don’t realize how easy it is. After only a month, my body already craves fresh, healthy choices. It gives me the energy stay active, and fitness encourages me to make good food choices. Going vegan isn’t for everyone, but I can truthfully say that it’s changed my life for the better. And who knows? The motivation for you to walk half a mile every morning, do 15 minutes of yoga before work or ride your bike to the store could be just a watermelon away. Flourish Magazine | January/2015 35

Drink plenty of fluids Your body needs hydration to work properly. While being sick with a cold or the flu may make you want to forgo liquids in favor of sleep, it’s important to give your body the ammunition it needs to fight. Clear liquids like water and juices are best. Avoid sodas; the caffeine they contain can actually make dehydration worse.
Stay warm and rested No one likes to have to miss out on life. When you’re sick, it’s tempting to ignore the signals and continue to work or care for the kids, but this can lead to a rebound illness. Give your body the time it needs to fully heal before jumping back into your routine.
irrigate with a salt water rinse Nasal passages can quickly become irritated, and a salt water rinse can help clear congestion. Mix one-fourth teaspoon salt and one-fourth teaspoon baking soda in 8 ounces of warm water. Use a bulb syringe or a neti pot to gently flush the nasal passages with the rinse. Be sure to use only distilled or cooled, boiled water in your rinse to avoid contamination.

A weak working memory lets valuable info slide out of the container, making everyday math problems tougher (How much is left in the account after I write checks for $135 and $350?), messing up your ability to grocery-shop without a list and focus in a business meeting (What did my boss just say about my department?), and much, much more. why is your working memory not working? Hormonal shifts at menopause can throw you off your mental game. The reason: There are loads of estrogen receptors in areas of the brain (like the frontal lobe) that control working memory. When there is less estrogen to turn these receptors on, memory degrades until the receptors adjust. With the fluctuations of menopause, the receptors often cannot adjust fast enough, and you forget your dentist appointment. Up to two-thirds of women report forgetfulness and other mental hiccups at this time. Things often improve once the wild hormone swings stop, but plenty of other factors like sleep, diet and how often you exercise can help or hurt this important brain function, too. Don’t overlook hormone therapy. We recommend bioidentical estradiol and micronized progesterone plus 162 mg of aspirin (with a glass of warm water before and after to prevent GI bleeding and upset) to decrease blood clot and cancer risks. (Hormone therapy may not be for you if you’re at high risk for breast cancer.) There’s recent evidence that bioidentical estradiol is better than conventional estrogen (called conjugated equine estrogen) for clearing up brain fog. Three specific ways a stroll boosts working memory: Exercise increases the number of connections between brain cells, makes the connections stronger and improves blood flow in these brain regions.
Say yes to omega-3s. These good fats really are brain food and help working memory work better. And now that we know even adult brains replenish and regrow new cells (renewing them up to three times every year), it makes sense that you need plenty of these fats. The good omega-3 fatty acid, called DHA, is an important building block of brain cell membranes, the place where signals move from cell to cell. Have fatty fish three times a week, or get 900 milligrams of DHA a day from algal oil or fish oil capsules. We do. Slumber deeply. Menopause can wreck a good night’s sleep. Hormone therapy can help. So can getting checked for sleep apnea (a problem for one in three overweight women and for plenty of guys, too). Skimping on sleep erodes working memory – punching holes in that precious container. Turn in earlier, turn off electronics an hour before bed and adopt a sweet bedtime routine (a couple of stretches, a warm shower, some light reading or a snuggle, then lights out.) modified push-Ups You’ll need strong arms to carry around the kids all day. To strengthen your chest and arms, get down on all fours, knees together. Walk your hands forward until your head, neck, back and hips are straight and in line. Now, lift your feet off the ground, balancing on your knees. You’re ready to begin! Keeping your abs tight, bend your elbows and lower your chest to the floor. Press back up. Do 10 to 15 repetitions.
Butterfly Abs Still carrying around a little extra baby weight? On top of great nutrition, doing butterfly abs can help strengthen and tighten your core. Lie on your back with the soles of your feet together, then relax your knees out to the side (they should move towards the ground). Place your hands behind your head
with your elbows pointing out. You’re ready to start! Tighten your abs and lift your chest and shoulders up off the ground; release back down. Do 10 to 15 repetitions.
Standing hip Extension This is a great exercise for all around balance, toning and flexibility. Using a chair for balance, stand with your feet at hipdistance apart. Extend your left leg straight out behind you, balancing on your right foot and squeezing your glutes. Return to the starting position and repeat the motion. Do 10 to 15 repetitions on each leg.

Q. I’ve heard about a therapy in which a sugar solution (no steroids) is injected into an injured joint. The theory is that it irritates the joint into repairing itself or something. Is there anything to support this approach? A. You are describing prolotherapy, a treatment that was pioneered in the 1930s. It involves the injection of dextrose (sugar), glycerin or other substances such as platelet-rich plasma or stem cells into the affected area. Prolotherapy injections are thought to stimulate healing. Recent research supports this approach in osteoarthritis. Scientists at the University of Wisconsin recruited 90 people with knee pain. They were randomly assigned to receive injections of dextrose or saline (as a placebo control), or to do specified physical-therapy exercises (Annals of Family Medicine, May/June 2013). Injections were administered at least three times in five months, and the volunteers were assessed at one year. Those who had been given dextrose injections had significantly more improvement in their knee pain than those in the other treatment groups. When I was a kid in the early 1960s, if I had a sore throat, Mom would put a glob of Vicks VapoRub on the back of my tongue and tell me to swallow it.

Sugar-Water Injections Promise Help For Pain I understand now that it’s for external use only. Was this dangerous? Has the formula changed since then? I honestly can’t remember if it helped get rid of the sore throat, but I do remember the horrible taste. A. We’re not aware of any change in the Vicks VapoRub formula. It contains camphor, eucalyptus oil, menthol, cedarleaf oil, nutmeg oil, thymol and turpentine oil along with petrolatum (petroleum jelly). Camphor is somewhat toxic when ingested, which is why the makers of Vicks warn that it is for external use only. Q. My husband takes blood pressure medicine (lisinopril, carvedilol, clonidine and amlodipine). In addition, he takes amiodarone and Plavix for his heart. I believe that some of these drugs are wiping him out. He can barely keep his eyes open by 10 a.m. after taking his pills at breakfast. He used to garden, take walks and play doubles tennis twice a week. Now he spends most of his time in the recliner because he has no energy. If he took his pills at bedtime, would that be better? A. It is unlikely that taking all these medications at night would solve the problem. Instead, he should have his medications reviewed by his cardiologist. Several of them (amiodarone, amlodipine, carvedilol, clonidine) can interact badly with each other to aggravate his heart condition. Perhaps the doses he was placed on years ago need adjustment. As people age, their susceptibility to side effects can change.

One in four American adults is currently living with a mental illness. Despite increasing acceptance, there is still a disparity in how these illnesses are treated. Your sessions with a therapist may be covered by your health insurance, but you wouldn’t dream of telling your boss that you’re calling in sick because of a depressive episode – I wouldn’t, and I’ve been writing about my battle with depression for years.
Mental illness occupies a grey area in our understanding of “polite conversation,” awkwardly straddling the line between “health complaint” and “dirty laundry.” Navigating the who, what, where, when and how of disclosure can be a challenge, but the key is proper preparation, honesty and firmness.
Deciding Who Should Know There will be people you will want to tell because you want their support, and there will be people you feel like you have to tell. Think about who you want to tell and why. Do you want to explain your bizarre behavior? Do you want to apologize for not pulling your weight at work? Just remember, your safety and comfort are your first priority. If the thought of telling your mother that you have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder makes you want to change your name and move to Siberia, then don’t do it!
Make a Plan Make a list of people you absolutely want to tell, as well as a list of people you absolutely don’t. Develop a plan for managing conflicts between the two lists – for example, if you
really want to tell one parent but not the other – and run it all by your therapist. A general rule of thumb: if you’re dreading a conversation, but you think you and the other person will better from it, it’s probably worth having. If you’re dreading a conversation and expect to feel even worse when it’s over, it very likely isn’t.
At Work Some workplaces have amazing policies for mentally ill employees. Unfortunately, a diagnosis in others may jeopardize your employment. Some illnesses, like personality disorders, are more likely than others to affect your job. Research your workplace’s policies on the health and wellbeing of their employees, and print it out as a reference. Then, approach your boss or coworker with a positive mindset, as if you expect them to be very understanding. The expectation may influence them to follow through.

as understanding as we’d like them to be. If your spouse, sibling, parent or good friend disagrees with you about your diagnosis, stick to a simple mantra: “I’m an adult, and I think X is what’s best for me.” There’s nothing more to it. You don’t need to prove that therapy is a worthwhile use of your money; you just need to assert that you are quite confident in your decision to see this therapist. Further argument can be met with a healthy dose of “I’m sorry you feel that way.”
With Your Kids Many mental illnesses are hereditary. In general, children’s wellbeing is hugely influenced by that of their parents. Be honest with your kids about mental illness – it can spare them from years of uncertainty if it ever surfaces in their own lives. While honesty is important, avoid any gory details, focusing instead on feelings and behaviors.
Telling the people in your life what you’re going through can be frightening, but it’s an important step towards being in control of your recovery. Flourish Magazine | January/2015 31

When the Word
“No” Starts a War
If you’re the parent of an oppositional, defiant child, every attempt to set boundaries and establish your authority brings a new fight. It’s frustrating and emotionally draining, and after one too many battles you may feel tempted to give up.

Nobody likes the word “no,” but most children come to terms with it around the age of two or three when their reasoning skills kick into play. However, not all children hit this milestone. Some children explode every time they hear the word “no,” even through their school-aged years. For them, “no” is synonymous with “you’re not in control,” and it causes children to lash out.
peaceful manner. One way to avoid conflict is to create a daily schedule. Set times for different activates, write them down and hang them up. That way, when your child says, “I want to play now,” you can say, “I understand, but remember the schedule – playtime isn’t until after homework.” In this way, you’re still saying no, but in a more positive manner.
If you’re a parent who struggles with a highly reactive child, remember these three words given to us by child behavioral therapist and Empowering Parents contributor James Lehman: avoid, escape and redirect. Your first aim should be to avoid conflict with defensive children, to escape and escalating situation and to redirect them toward something positive.
Similarly, avoid conflict by anticipating a fight. For instance, if you know that every time you enter the grocery with your child, they’ll find something they want, beg you to buy it and throw a tantrum when you say no, head off their request by prepping them beforehand. “Please don’t ask me to buy you candy today. We’re only getting what’s on the grocery list.”
Avoiding conflict doesn’t mean tip-toing around as if on egg shells. It means establishing a routine that enables you to work with your emotional child in a calm,
If you’re unable to avoid a fight, your next move should be to find a way out of it. This does not mean giving in to your child’s wishes. Instead, state your position, turn

around and walk away. For example, you might say, “I told you we’re not getting candy today. It’s time for us to get what’s on the list,” then turn around and remove yourself from the argument. Redirecting your child’s attention is a tried and true way to de-escalate a heated situation. Use this strategy when you see your child on the verge of a meltdown. For instance, if your child asks for candy at the grocery, you might say, “Remember the birthday party we’re going to this weekend? I bet they’ll be cake there,” and let that be the end of the discussion. This redirects their attention to something else and helps guide them away from an argument. Most children will develop coping skills over time, and age helps. Some children just take a little longer and require more patience on your part. By sticking to a plan that’s both flexible and firm, you’re taking a step in the right direction.

Eat Well, Save the World How eating mindfully impacts the environment Need some motivation to keep your diet on track? Try this: if you make healthy eating choices, you could save the world.
Seriously? Seriously. At least that’s what scientists argue in “Global Diets Link Environmental Sustainability and Human Health,” a paper published in the Nov. 2014 issue of Nature. Researchers compiled results from decades’ worth of scholarship on the effects of modern eating habits on human and environmental health, then compared those results with population projections to predict the fate of our planet’s future. What they found was nothing short of astonishing. They expect that current food demands will increase by more than 100 percent by the year 2050, and if current eating trends continue, much of that nourishment will be allocated to livestock. To meet such a sharp growth in demand, cropland would have to increase by 42 percent, and fertilizer use go up by 46 percent. That means more lost habitats, greater degradation of rivers, lakes and streams and, for many species, the threat of environmental erasure. 24 Flourish Magazine | January/2015

How does this relate to my diet exactly? Here’s the thing – even though choosing beef over fish in the supermarket seems like a small choice, daily dietary decisions have a huge impact on the global food market and its ecological footprint. The greenhouse gas emissions from raising, harvesting and preparing one gram of protein in beef, for example, are around 250 times greater than those emitted by yielding one gram of protein from vegetables, chicken and fish. Based on data from 90 percent of the global population, scientists claim that widespread adoption of alternative diets (those that boast environmentally friendly and conscientious consumer choices) would reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food production worldwide by a whopping 40 percent.
The “diet-environmenthealth trilemma” Even if environmental concerns are off your radar, the effects of dietary habits on you and your family are immediately important. David Tilman, one of the authors of the study and professor at Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, suggests that our
food choices are directly involved in what he terms a “diet-environment-health trilemma,” meaning that no one element can thrive while another one struggles. In fact, when compared to conventional American diets (think red meat and potatoes), other diets like Mediterranean, pescetarian and vegetarian show decreases in Type 2 diabetes by 16 to 41 percent, mortality from heart disease by 20 to 26 percent and cancer by up to 13 percent. So before you convince yourself eating healthfully doesn’t matter, think about the greater impact of your daily food decisions. By buying fresh, sustainably grown and organic, you invest in more than the health of your body – you invest in the health of the world.
What’s a greenhouse gas, again? A greenhouse gas is a gas in the atmosphere that absorb radiation, throwing off the earth’s energy-in-energyout balance by trapping heat within the earth’s atmosphere. Under the direction of director Tammy Meyers, student players transformed the center courtyard of EHS (where they habitually hang out during lunch and break times) into the site of timeless drama, revamped in modern street-artist style. Sophocles’ “Antigone” tells the story of Oedipus Rex’s courageous daughter who defies the power of the state in order to bury her departed brother, Polyneices, who died during the rebellion of the last Civil War. King Creon decrees that no person accused of treason will be given burial rights, condemning Polyneices’s soul to purgatory.
Other outstanding contributions came from Benjamin Brandt (blue mask), who played the unyielding King Creon, as well as off-stage crew members like Stage Manager Brittany Fletcher and Student Director Mariam Mohamed. This was Senior Mohamed’s ninth Eastside production.

The first phase of Celebration Pointe’s $170-million project is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016. Despite all of the land being unearthed for construction, 100 acres of the development was set aside for conservation land east of Lake Kanapaha.

Celebration Pointe and Butler North will significantly change the face of the commercial district along Archer and I-75. Because of their proximity and construction schedules, the two projects are linked together in making that change. Tenants for both projects already include a Bass Pro Shops, a Sam’s Club, a Wal-Mart Supercenter and the Hotel Indigo. A new bridge built across I-75 will link the developments on the new, four-lane extension built on to the existing SW 62nd Blvd. Both projects hope to attract even more businesses to the district to make the area a one-stop shop for living, working, entertainment, dining and hospitality.
AT A GLANCE … Celebration Pointe – One-million squarefoot, mixed-use development on about 225-acres with plans for office, retail, restaurant, residential and hospitality space. Located northwest of I-75 and Archer Road, plans call for approximately 375,000-squarefeet of retail, restaurant and entertainment space and about 45,000-square-feet of Class-A office space over ground-level retail. Plans include 1,000 luxury apartments as well. A 120-room Hotel Indigo and an 80,000square-foot Bass Pro Shops have been announced as tenants. The development also designated a 100-acre conservation area east of Lake Kanapaha. Butler North – Plans call for more than 750,000-square-feet of commercial space on about 267 acres to be added to Butler Plaza, which will take up the area behind the present Butler Plaza that currently is being cleared for construction of the infrastructure. Actual building construction is expected to begin this spring, possibly as early as March, and will take a few years to compete. Butler Plaza East is being redeveloped as Butler Town Center. Butler Enterprises has reportedly said the expansion, when finished, will add 3,500 permanent jobs to the area. Cane Grinding The chance to buy fresh, all natural cane syrup from Micanopy’s historic Deerfield Farm only comes around once a year. Every fall, the Feaster family hosts a day of good syrup, music and melt-in-your-mouth biscuits that’s free for the whole county to come out and enjoy. Bo Feaster, who currently works the farm with five generations of his own kin, says that they usually sell their whole year’s crop on the day of the event.

“It’s all natural, and all organic (though not certified). We haven’t used any commercial fertilizer in over 10 years,” Bo explains. “The less fertilizer you use, the sweeter the syrup is.”
“The cane grows back every year, so we’re grinding the same cane we started with when we started making syrup again 15 years ago,” says Bo. “We cut it down the weekend before Thanksgiving, then give it a week to sweeten before we cook it. Then it’s stripped, chopped and brought to the mill to be ground. The juice is pumped into a vat, then the water evaporated out of it.”

Hundreds of families packed the North Field of Santa Fe College for LifeSouth’s annual Operation Santa Delivery on a sunny Dec. 13. The crowd whooped and hollered for Ol’ St. Nick’s arrival via a ShandsCair helicopter. Children lined up to take turns sharing their Christmas wishes while sitting on Santa’s lap for photos, which were printed for free on site. Bounce houses, face painting, games, arts and crafts, a petting zoo and other activities also were free at the three-hour event. There was nominal fee for food, such as $1 for a slice of Gator Domino’s Pizza. Operation Santa Delivery began in 2002 in the Royal Park Stadium 16 parking lot. It initially featured only Santa arriving by helicopter, but quickly outgrew that location once activities were added, promoting the move to Santa Fe in 2008.

To Vent, or NoT To vENT?
After a stressful encounter, many of us can’t wait to call our friends or partner and just explode. While bottling up anger may be bad, research now shows that spewing into the open could have negative consequences, too.
Fueling the fire When we rant away frustration, we follow the Freudian model for “catharsis,” or the release of pent up energy that might otherwise evolve into neurotic behavior. Now, many psychologists argue that Freud’s solution to anger might produce more negativity than it releases. In a study led by Dr. Joachim Stoeber, psychologist at the University of Kent, people who vented to friends felt less satisfied about their situation afterward than they felt before. Similarly, women who regularly divulge the negative details of their days are more likely than men and other women to suffer
from depression according to a study by Dr. Laura C. Bouchard of Saint Joseph’s University.
Sooth the savage beast It might feel good to blow off steam every now and again, but regular rants can lead us down a road to greater frustration, violence and depression. The next time you feel the urge to reenact the details of your latest setback, find a better way to cope. Three strategies emerged from Dr. Stoeber’s research as effective means of conquering negativity. • Acceptance. Being able to look adversity in the eye and accept it as a matter of course. • Humor. Finding a way to make the situation anecdotal and laugh away your stress.

Young Gators Try To Overcome Early Shooting Woes During Challenging Non-Conference Slate Billy Donovan didn’t look good. Almost like he had eaten bad seafood. His team’s trip to the Bahamas certainly was no vacation, as he spent most of it trying to digest whether his young team’s shooting slump was more than a simple slump. The Florida men’s basketball coach had just witness another dreadful shooting performance – 32.8 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from three-point range – during a 75-64 loss against No. 5 North Carolina in the Battle 4 Atlantis finale. “I think a couple of things, we start the game 0-for-10 and actually think we had some pretty decent looks,” Donovan said at the post-game press conference. “That had a huge impact in the game and the way we started and really anything else was our shooting percentage and how poor we shot the ball.

His quickness and attacking style keeps defenders on their heels. He was second on the team with 17 assists and led the team with 21 steals through eight games. Quickness helps create open looks for himself and others as evidenced by his 40 percent (8 of 20) shooting from 3-point range. At 6-foot-9-inches tall and only 178 pounds, Robinson looks like a freshman and has played like one at times, air-balling nine shots while hitting only eight field goals heading into the Kansas game. But that Kansas game showed why Robinson was rated as a five-star prospect as he led the team in points (13) and rebounds (5) before fouling out.

“He’s a winner,” is the how athletic director Jeremy Foley introduced Jim McElwain as the 25th Florida football coach. Turns out, he already chalked up his first win as everyone from local beat reporters to national analysts buzzed about the victory in his inaugural UF press conference on Dec. 6. Sure, the 52-year old from Missoula, Mont. used all of the usual words like “honored” and “humbled” when expressing his excitement about landing the job. But it was the unique quotes that followed in which he truly won over Gator Nation. When asked about his influences offensively and what the offense would look like – a question on the minds of most fans following the inept offenses under former coach Will Muschamp – McElwain dropped a metaphor. “Well, here is who I am. I'm the dog they dropped off down at the Humane Society. He has a little bit of about every breed in him. Whatever the situation is, you try to bring that breed out that helps success,” he said. Later on when quizzed about the “pressure” of the “much publicized buyout” of $7 million, including $3 million from his own account, McElwain essentially flipped the script. “Here is the beauty. Pressure is awesome. That's why we do this. The one thing I love is pressure. Now, I never look at it as feeling the pressure. I always look at it as applying the pressure. I'm excited about that part of it. You know what, if there's no pressure, why wake up in the morning, right? That's really what drives me anyway.”

them interact with the team, see how they practice, we’ll get an idea. You got to understand this: I believe I can win with my dog Claire-a-bell. That’s the attitude. There’s good players here. That’s just our responsibility to get that going.”
As an offensive coach, you’ve coached at the highest level in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders. McElwain: Some people would say I didn’t coach in the National Football League, I coached at the Raiders, OK. (Laughter.)” Now, if McElwain can win on the field half as well as he can get reporters laughing, then the Gators have found the right guy. Time will tell. In his third year turning around Colorado State this past season, he led the Rams to a 10-2 record. He also spent four years as Alabama’s offensive coordinator, helping the Tide win a pair of National Championships.

It shows the line today’s media is toeing between professional journalism and tabloid tactics. In the media’s defense, the masses are demanding a more aggressive approach in the no-holds-barred, beat-everyone-tothe-scoop – often by mere seconds – world of Twitter reporting.
Boy, how Twitter has changed coaching searches. It’s not your grandfather’s coaching search. Heck, it’s not even your father’s, and barely even your older brother’s. Florida named Jim McElwain its 25th head football coach, and the media coverage leading up to it was comical. It peaked when one of the dozen-plus reporters camped outside of McElwain’s house tweeted a paparazzi-esque picture of UF athletic director Jeremy Foley and Co. through one of the windows. The word “creepy” was oft-used to describe the shot. It was, after all, a private home and the candid shot perhaps worthy of a criminal charge of some sort – stalking, invasion of privacy or trespassing come to mind.
Accuracy has taken a back seat to breaking the story. Being first outweighs being right, for some anyway, regardless of whether the pursuit is more tacky than tactful. In past coaching searches, Foley was able to keep it close to the vest, with no word about the new hire leaking out until the day of the press conference. That didn’t happen this time and may never again. There are few secrets in the smartphone age. Using a flight tracker app, it was discovered that UF’s plane was en route to Fort Collins, Colo., where McElwain had piloted a three-year turnaround at Colorado State, culminating with a 10-2 record this season.
That wasn’t all. One of the media members even had the gall to knock on the door and tweeted that no one answered.
A horde of reporters were waiting when Foley’s plane landed. They followed his vehicle – a white SUV that drew comparisons to the media’s chase of O.J. Simpson’s white Ford Bronco – to McElwain’s house with reporters tweeting updates and pictures every mile along the way.
What did he expect? McElwain to invite him in for a cup of tea and game of Charades?
It’s no wonder Foley looked like a deer in headlights in the through-the-window
picture taken later that night. It resulted in UF football’s official Twitter page posting updates about the negotiations, which set a new precedent for coaching searches. It’s amazing how much disinformation is reported by websites posing as legitimate news services. Unlike professional media outlets that vet stories and require a minimum of two credible sources before running with a story, these yahoos run with rumors when, say, they’re emailed a scoop from someone’s brother’s uncle who cuts someone’s hair who played junior high football with Foley. SB Nation, a site filled with fan reporters and a few others with actual newspaper experience, “broke” the story that UF had offered Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze $4.2 million to become UF’s next coach. After that spread like wildfire, Florida released a statement saying it “has made no job offers to anyone and reports claiming that are false.” In fact, Foley never even contacted anyone from Ole Miss and was in the process of setting up a meeting with McElwain when that story broke. Hopefully, it’ll be at least a few years before another circus of a coaching search for the Gators. It certainly will be crazy, but wisely UF has removed its plane from the flight tracker service to prevent a similar situation from happening again.
