Keeping

Summer Safe By Ginger Henderson

Water Safety Everyone enjoys a nice cool-down on a hot summer day, but don’t let your fun times with friends overshadow the need to watch children closely. Children must be supervised with vigilance when playing in or near water. If you and your partner are both attending a water event, consider assigning shifts so both of you know who is watching the kids. While one parent watches, the other can turn their attention to the conversation or festivities. Then swap roles so both of you get to enjoy your time with friends. If you’re solo, have your child sit out for a rest while you give your friends some attention.

Water Dangers to Watch For • Drain all buckets and baby pools after use. Children can drown in as little as two inches of water. • Cover pools when not in use and keep toys away from pool areas. • Watch for dangerous rip currents in ocean waters. If your child spends time swimming in the ocean, teach them how to swim out of a rip current and be sure to have them practice the technique.

Sun Safety Nothing ruins a great summer day like a blistering sunburn. In addition to causing pain and discomfort, just one blistering burn during childhood doubles a child’s risk of 8

developing skin cancer as an adult. To keep the sun’s rays from damaging delicate skin, choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and limit sun exposure from the hours of 10am to 2pm. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or immediately after swimming. Take the time to read the label – most give specific instructions on proper application to reduce your chances of getting a burn.

Sunburn Remedies If despite your best efforts you still find yourself pinkish after a day in the sun, try these remedies to help cool the burn. • For small areas (say, a spot you missed while applying sunscreen), soak a washrag in vinegar. Ring out slightly and place atop the burned skin. Leave in place until the washrag becomes warm. Reapply as needed. • For an all-over burn, run a tepid bath. Add an 8-ounce bottle of vinegar to the water and soak until skin feels refreshed. • Try taking an over the counter ibuprofen product. This will relieve both pain and inflammation. • Natural aloe is a wonderful burn salve. Simply break off a piece of the plant and rub it onto the inflamed skin. For an all-over burn, try an over the counter sunburn gel made with aloe. • If the burn causes blisters to appear on the skin, pain persists beyond a day, or

you notice any signs of infection, see a doctor immediately.

How to Know if Someone Needs CPR We all pray we’ll never need it, but if an emergency happens, being prepared can mean the difference between life and death. CPR has saved countless lives, but what are the signs that you’ll need to perform it? • Is the person conscious or unconscious? If the person is conscious, you should NOT perform CPR. If the person appears unconscious, shake their shoulder and ask loudly, “Are you OK?” Look for a response, even a non-verbal one. • Are you with someone? If the person doesn't respond and two people are available, one should call 911 and one should begin CPR. • Are you alone? If you are alone and have immediate access to a telephone, call 911 before beginning CPR — unless you think the person has become unresponsive because of suffocation (such as from drowning). In this special case, begin CPR for one minute and then call 911. • Is an AED available? If so, deliver one shock if instructed by the device, then begin CPR. CPR instructions from Mayoclinic.com

With summer in full swing, the shoreline is practically screaming for attention and it’s time for you to answer. Family vacations don’t always need to be a long-distance excursion, sometimes, the best destinations are right around the corner. Florida’s beaches have entertained families for generations. Any memorable trip requires some planning, however. Save time, stress and money, and make sure you have everything with a simple check list.

CHAMPS By Mike Capshaw | Photos by Tim Casey/UF Communications

Florida overcame a midseason slide before making a postseason run that resulted in the school’s first NCAA softball championship. The Gators (55-12) finished off a near perfect NCAA tournament run by sweeping SEC rival Alabama in the Women’s College World Series finals in Oklahoma City. They went 10-1 in NCAA tourney play by outscoring opponents by a whopping 81-10 margin and were 5-0 at the WCWS. They did it behind the strong right arm of senior pitcher Hannah Rogers, who was named MVP of the WCWS, a defense that turned a WCWS-record seven double plays and an offense that batted .331, nearly 60 points higher than the next best hitting team in the eight-team WCWS field.

Rogers, one of two seniors on a squad that will defend its title a year from now with many of the same faces, posted a 4-0 mark with a 1.00 ERA at the WCWS. She was 7-0 overall with a 0.64 ERA during the NCAA tourney. Rogers sensed something was special about this team from the first game of the season. “All the hard work we put in as a team this year and all the hard work I’ve put in these past four years, it’s just amazing to finish it off like this,” Rogers said after a celebration ceremony in Gainesville. “I wouldn’t want to finish it off any other way.” Players were bussed straight to Pressly Stadium after arriving at the Gainesville Regional Airport. The ceremony featured speeches by UF athletic director Jeremy Foley and president Bernie Machen in front of an estimated crowd of more than 1,500 fans. “This wasn’t just Florida’s team, this was America’s team,” Machen said. “This university aspires to be in the Top 10. When we get there, we’ll have a softball team that’s

already there.” Gators coach Tim Walton deserves tons of praise for elevating the program. He also deserves credit for making a tough decision by starting Lauren Haeger instead of Rogers in Game 2 of the WCWS. Many were skeptical heading into the game after Rogers rolled over the Tide in Game 1, but Walton stuck to his guns despite some of his own second-guessing the night before. “I honestly didn’t sleep very well last night,” Walton said at the post-game presser. “Not that I don’t have trust and faith in Lauren. I do. Delanie (Gourley) as well. But Hannah was just on fire. “But we’ve talked all year that we don’t have a superstar on our team. We have a bunch of players who do their job. [This game] was a tribute to that.” A few weeks earlier, it didn’t seem as if the team was destined to finish on top during a losing streak that saw UF drop six of seven games, including a pair at Alabama. But the

Gators rebounded by winning 24 of their next 28 games to take home the first national title in the program’s 16-year history.

It is estimated that there are 21 million veterans currently living in the U.S. – an honored group never to be forgotten. Last month, Concerned Veterans for America and Gainesville Harley Davidson partnered to host the Honoring Our Veterans Rally to remember and support WWII, Korean, Vietnam, Desert Storm and the Afghanistan and Iraq war veterans and troops. Patrons and vets alike enjoyed live music, food and drinks at the event.

Perfect Job Interview The

By Katie Moss

Whether you’re already employed and looking to move on to bigger and better things, you’re reentering the work world, or you’ve recently graduated from college, going the process of obtaining a new position can be quite an intimidating experience. Luckily for you, we’ve got a long list of dos and don’ts to make your interview experience a little easier.

DO…

Be likeable. It sounds simple, but if the interviewer doesn’t connect with you as a person, they won’t hire you. Smile, be yourself, be friendly and enthusiastic. Too few job candidates focus on how their personality will affect their work, and it’s important for the people you work with to like you as a person.

Keep hygiene in mind. You may be surprised how many people forget this important step. Make sure you’ve recently bathed, brushed your teeth, brushed your hair (a fresh haircut is best), etc. You should also be sure to dress tastefully by wearing conservative, stylish, well-fitting clothing. Don’t overdo it on the cosmetics and perfume, however.

Ask questions to which you truly want answers. These might be something like, “What skills do your top performers have?”, “What do you expect me to accomplish in the first few weeks, six months, a year?” “What do employees here do in their free time?” If you ask the right questions, you should quickly figure out if this position is right for you. If you decide that it is, the interviewer will also realize this as well.

Know what you can offer the company. Think about what makes you special, and share that with the interviewer Go out of your way to determine what you can immediately contribute to the company in your potential new position. Don’t assume that you’ll be put in charge of initiatives or projects right away, however. Simply state your skills and how they would make you an asset to the company. 16 Flourish Magazine | June/2014

DON’T…

On a related note, don’t be silent.

Come Unprepared. There’s nothing worse than being asked a question you should know the answer to and having no clue what to say. You should always do background research on the company and the position before you attend an interview. You can usually find relevant company information on the company’s website. You can also check the company’s Facebook and LinkedIn page for additional information.

Talk too much. Yes, there is such a thing as too much communication. Don’t emphasize the fact that you want the position simply because you’re looking for any job available while unemployed. You also shouldn’t start an interview by saying you want the job in general. You haven’t received enough information to determine this yet, so don’t overcommit too early in the process. Interrupting the interviewer is never a good idea, either. For the love of all that’s good, definitely don’t text, make phone calls, or listen to your iPod while you’re waiting for the interviewer to arrive.

You probably know that it’s rather difficult to communicate with someone who answers a question with one or two words. It’s awkward to speak to someone who doesn’t keep a conversation going. You should answer questions accurately and efficiently, but elaborate as much as seems necessary to answer the question. Don’t be afraid to be your own advocate.

Don’t chew on gum or candy. These items only distract the interviewer from what you have to say and make you look like you’re not taking the interview seriously. Of course, if you’re offered water or coffee before the interview, don’t be afraid to say yes.

Don’t forget to follow up. Whether you think you made the best impression or not, it’s always a good decision to follow up with a thank-you. E-mails are acceptable, but written notes are even better. Be sure to reiterate your interest in both the company and the position. Good luck on your interview and in your new position!

Everything has beauty, but not everyone can see. Confucius

How many times have you sent a message to someone and ZAP, this comes back: "I am currently out of the office for the remainder of this week. If you need immediate assistance in my absence, you may contact Jane Doe at . . Blah blah blah

By Leil Lowndes Automatic responses like that make them sound just that – blah. First of all, they should kill stilted phrases like "remainder of the week," "immediate assistance," "to insure prompt action" and "in my absence." Who talks like that? And, horrors, "This is an automatically generated response." That adds insult (of your intelligence) to injury.

After you let them know how to contact Jane, end on a friendly note, perhaps: "I look forward to responding to you when I return." Find more tips like these at www.lowndes.com

Some causes of stress are easy to pinpoint. If you’re dealing with a crumbling relationship, facing a financial crisis or simply have too much on your plate, the reason for your stress is all too clear.

Stress triggers AND

How to tackle them

Unfortunately, stress triggers aren’t always so obvious. Often, we dismiss the little things that give us angst, but small stressors can add up quickly. Instead of dismissing the minor stressors in our lives, it’s imperative to address them face-on. A Messy Living Space If you’re living with a partner or kids who don’t seem to be as mess-conscious as you are, it can build some serious frustration. So what’s a frazzled mom, roommate or partner to do? Don’t let others off the hook so easily. Gather your roommate or family and tell them what’s bothering you. Then, suggest a specific time each night where everyone helps with a quick cleanup.

You Can’t Find Quiet Are you a busy mom who can never seem to find alone time? Quiet time is imperative for keeping one’s peace of mind, and you should strive to carve out this time every day. Whether it involves waking up a few minutes early and having a quiet house to yourself or simply slipping in the shower for some stress-busting cleansing, make a point to be alone. 20 Flourish Magazine | June/2014

You’re Simply Too Busy Feel like your to-do list is simply overwhelming? Does even the smallest hiccup during the day throw your schedule completely off-track? Everyone needs breathing room; things don’t always go as planned. Ask for help when you feel like you’ve taken on too much – Dad can take a turn picking up the kids from school and running to the grocery, for instance. Also, don’t be afraid to cut things out. Reevaluate your schedule and decide what activities you can do without.

You’re Starving Are you currently on a calorie-counting binge in hopes of losing weight? Eating too few calories each day can leave you tired and cranky. Instead of starving yourself and counting calories, focus on making healthy choices. Choosing fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains will keep you feeling full and ready to tackle the day.

You Feel Like No One’s Listening How many times a day do you have to repeat yourself? When you feel like no one’s listening, it can cause some serious frustration. For repeat offenders, make a point to gain their full attention before speaking. You can even say, “I have something important I want to talk to you about, do you have a minute to listen?” If you still feel like you aren’t being heard, say so! Often, a quick discussion is all it takes to call attention to your needs and to help you earn a listening ear. Take a deep breath. What in your life causes you stress? It’s important to combat these issues, not to continue putting them off. It will definitely pay off in the long-run.

Happiness is not something readymade. It comes from your own actions. Dalai Lama

Business A Cool Way To Give Your

Flourish

By Leil Lowndes

Trading business cards? Don’t just hand yours to the recipient like a worthless piece of cardboard stock. I’ve seen people swap cards as though they were dirty Kleenexes. Don’t demean yourself like that! You are giving someone a representation of yourself. When you handle your card with reverence, it shows you take pride in your profession. Here’s how: Take your card out of an attractive carrying case and present it horizontally, with the script facing the recipient. Hold it just a bit HIGHER than usual — not in his face — but at a height where he could almost read it in your hands. If you show respect your work, others will, too.

If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat! Just get on. Sheryl Sandberg

Card Now they’re giving you their card? Do not just glance at it and quickly stash it in your pocket or purse. First, hold the card with BOTH HANDS and gaze at it as though it were a small piece of art they had hand-painted on rice paper especially for you. Then switch it to one hand, but continue holding it at waist level or just below. Give their card a RESPECTFUL GLANCE FROM TIME TO TIME. You are now making them feel especially esteemed and valued. Checking the Time This is a strong signal for “I’m bored” and should never be done when speaking with someone. Likewise, avoid checking your phone, inspecting your fingernails or gazing around the room when engaged in discussion.

Stroking Your Chin While Looking at Someone People frequently stroke their chin when making a decision, but this action can easily be interpreted to mean “I’m judging you” if you do it while staring someone’s way.

Crossing Your Arms Though you may find this position comfortable, it’s a sign of defensiveness or egotism. Do your best to keep your arms by your side – it will make you seem friendlier.

Slouching Posture is a sign of confidence and composure, and it can affect the way strangers respond to you. Keep your shoulders back, head up and feet a comfortable distance apart, especially when greeting people.

Blinking Quickly Increasing your blinking rate is a sign of anxiety. If you feel nervous, be mindful of your blinking habits, especially during conversation.

Body Language Blunders You should avoid By Kat Freestone

If the wind will not serve, take to the oars. Latin Proverb

Touching Your Face During Conversation This is commonly (albeit subconsciously) interpreted as a sign of deception, especially if you touch your nose. Keep your hands away from your face when you’re talking.

Fidgeting with Objects This is another sign of anxiety. Whether you’re playing with your pencil, toying with your coffee mug or fidgeting with your bracelet, it’s a signal to others that you’re nervous or unprepared. Do what you can to keep your hands by your side.

Shifting Weight from Foot to Foot This gesture indicates discomfort. Additionally, it may make others uncomfortable to be in your presence, especially since foot shifting can be interpreted to mean that you’re ready to leave the conversation. Don’t shift your feet more than once every two minutes. Flourish Magazine | June/2014 23

Talent Interview By Daniel Sutphin

A Factory Mechanic Finds International Fame

and put their name on the list and they'll be heard at some point in the day, so that's what I did. They invited me back to sing for them again and offered me a job on their next UK tour. I basically went back to work, handed in my notice in the car factory and hit the road with this opera company.

How did you go from working in a factory to becoming a platinumselling artist?

After 12 months with them, I decided to try to get my voice trained properly to make sure I was building a technique and knew exactly what I was doing, so I went to music college. I auditioned for a place at the Royal College of Music in London and they took me on.

What kind of musical training did you have growing up? The only sort of experience I've had was being part of amateur dramatic or amateur operatic societies. That was about it. I never had any major singing lessons. Everything that I did vocal-wise was just from a natural instinct to sing.

How does one generally break into theatre at an international level?

26 Flourish Magazine | June/2014

Now in his early 40s, Alfie continues to broaden the already far-reaching spectrum of his skills by starring on the PBS series, Mr. Selfridge. He's performed in a variety of operatic arias, Neapolitan and Viennese operas, Broadway musicals – including a Tony Award winning performance on La Boheme – and even took on the role of Jean Valjean in the PBS broadcast of Les Misérables in Concert: The 25th Anniversary.

Off-stage, the husband and father of one has released 11 studio albums, the most recent of which is the latest in his recent contemporary musical turn. Here, Alfie discusses his new album Trust, his stint on Mr. Selfridge, as well as the fascinating beginnings of his rise in the music industry.

I was fortunate while working at the (car) factory one day. Everybody at the factory had their individual radio sets and we would go play our own music. I was singing along to a song on the radio and this customer who's car I was working on was in the music industry. He overheard me singing and gave me a badge to come down to London and audition for the (Classical Opera) Company and I did, and got taken on. Fate is what it was.

Chance, coincidence and fate: Three words often used in stories such as Alfie Boe's. At 20 years old, Alfie worked a normal job at a car factory, fixing cars and carelessly singing along to his radio. Despite what one can presume was a loud environment, Alfie's raw talent and big voice was heard by a customer who happened to work in the music industry.

I took the day off work, went down to London from the North of England on the recommendation of this guy who said the Company was holding open auditions. 'Open auditions' means that anyone can turn up

What inspired you to switch to performing more contemporary music? I'll never drop my classical background. I like all types of music, from classical to country, to folk, blues and rock. So many crossover artists who feel like they can sing an operatic aria one minute and then go up and sing a rock song or a ballad, try to change their sound. I want to remain legitimate to the voice that I have. I don't try to become a rock singer or a country singer, I just use the same technique that I've worked on for years to produce those songs and sing those songs. You should be satisfied and happy with the voice that you've got and the technique that you've got and then adapt to that music; you don't have to try and be something you're not.

How did you decide which songs you wanted to use in your latest album? Well that's a collaboration between myself, the record company and the producer, Larry Klein, who produced the album. He had some great suggestions and some wonderful ideas that he came up with. It was interesting to take someone else's advice on songs. Basically, it's another pair of ears – they hear your voice and tell you that song will suit you. Larry brought a different side out of my voice. We dropped a lot of the song’s keys, which sort of showed a different color in my voice. I wasn't

Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears. Les Brown

always banging out the big notes like I do in operatic pieces, but I did show a different color and I was quite pleased with that.

You also released Storyteller and Alfie in 2011, how does Trust differ? I've got to say that all my albums are very different. I've made nine albums now, from operatic albums to Neapolitan albums, to Viennese albums – it's just another area of music that I'm interested in, a genre of music that I grew up listening to. My father was my biggest teacher when it came to music. He had his record collection consisting of Enrico Caruso – and Italian Operatic Tenor – to Slim Whitman – an American country music and western music artist, and people like that. It was an amazing eclectic mix that I grew up listening to. That's why I suppose most of my albums are different. It's a bonus for me. I like it because it keeps my job and my life very interesting.

What track do you think best represents your goals with Trust? One of my favorite songs on the album is the Warren Zevon track, Keep Me in Your Heart.

The sentiment behind the song is beautiful. Warren was an incredible artist and singersongwriter, so that's the track for me that speaks to the whole sound of the album. From that you can go in any direction. It's a wonderful song - very heartfelt, beautiful melody. Obviously I don't do it as well as Warren Zevon [laughs], but I bring my own interpretation to it.

musicals, which is a bit like Cabaret, that sort of thing. He was then invited by one of his old friends, Lady Mae, to come along to a charity event at Selfridge's to sing for the sponsors and workers. Their performance resurrects his career.

me. I never had done much television work before. It was a whole new experience. I had never been in front of a camera and had to play a role. I basically had to stand on stage and perform an act for the crowd. That sort of came naturally. Then I had a couple scenes where I had dialogue and chatting with Lady Mae; that was an exciting moment.

Work hard. Study hard. Make sure that you know what you are doing to produce your craft. Anytime you get invited or asked to sing, do it wholeheartedly; don't be shy. You have to go out and put yourself out there because you never know who is going to be listening or watching. Do something every single day to achieve your goal, whether it's writing an email or making a phone call or singing in the street. Do something every single day to achieve what you want to achieve and enjoy it at the same time.

With your history and experience starting from the bottom - so to speak - what advice would you Can you tell me about Mr. Selfridge? have for people pursuing a career Mr. Selfridge was a wonderful experience for in theater and/or entertainment?

What does your guest role entail on Mr. Selfridge? My character is a guy called Richard Chapman who basically was an opera singer – a well-known, established opera singer who fell on hard times. He had reached a point that he wasn't getting much operatic work, so he went into play in English

Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful. Joshua J. Marine

acupuncture

WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Tired of popping pills to help you sleep, chugging caffeine for energy or banging your head against the wall because it’s all too much to bear? Your body and mind deserve better; it’s time to consider acupuncture. This 3,000-year old healing technique of traditional Chinese medicine is safe, effective and even covered by some insurance policies. Most importantly, though, it can change your life. Not only does acupuncture heal almost all kinds of pain, anxiety, stress, depression, arthritis, BPH, UTI, asthma, and heart disease, but the list goes on, but many experience a change in their day-to-day well-being, too. Here, Gainesville’s holistic clinic Natural Rhythm Acupuncture explains how: It reduces stress. By mellowing out the nervous system, acupuncture can remove you from the perpetual state of sympathetic dominance and help you feel better equipped to manage stress. It will give you more energy. Whether you feel motivated to hit the gym, wake up alert and ready for the day or no longer experience the 3 o’clock slump, acupuncture can have a lasting effect on your energy levels. It will clear your mind. Being in pain is a sureďŹ re way to decrease mental clarity, but acupuncture turns that around. You’ll be able to make decisions faster and with greater conďŹ dence. It will make you kinder to yourself. Acupuncture studies how root imbalances affect your whole system, and when one thing is out of whack, it can have a negative effect on your entire state. When you start thinking of yourself as a complex being, you’ll ďŹ nd it a bit easier to forgive those days when you don’t accomplish everything you “should.â€? It will help you sleep. Insomnia is a common complaint, and acupuncture is highly effective at resolving it. Interestingly, even if you don’t seem to have trouble catching your Zs, you’re still likely to have more restful nights.

TESTIMONIAL:

After years of taking drugs like Detrol & Flomax for my incontinence and urgency, I hit a dead end when my

favorite incontinence drug Enablex was dropped from my insurer’s formulary leaving me with drugs having debilitating side effects. It

was at this point that I was introduced to Dr. Han. The herbs he had me boil down got me off the Enablex in about 10 days. I was able to

stop the Flomax in another week and sleep 6 hours in a stretch. I have no more side effects and no more painful urgency. I have con-

tinued on the herb mixes for these and other problems. I feel younger at 75 than I felt at 74. – Broward Hunter

As an employee of an automotive website and marketing solutions company, I can tell you that this is a common question. Most in the industry would say that leasing is a solid choice, despite the fact that only one-fifth of consumers choose this option. If you’re considering leasing your next vehicle, here’s what you can expect: It’s not likely you’ll have to pay for any major issues when you lease your vehicle. Because you will only have it for a few years, it won’t have enough wear to need its major systems replaced like an older car would. Instead, you can focus on simple maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations. If you like always having the latest safety features and newest technologies, then leasing a new car every two to three years makes sense for you. You may also have the ability to write off your lease payment if you’re self-employed, as well as drive a luxury model for less money. It’s important to consider value when looking at new vehicles. You’ve probably 30 Flourish Magazine | June/2014

heard the saying that a new car loses value as soon as it drives off the lot. That’s certainly true – a vehicle can depreciate by thousands of dollars the minute it’s sold. You’ll need to think about how much value your car will offer in a few years if you pay cash or finance it. Leasing also offers a good bit of flexibility. Often, payments are much lower than they would be if you purchased the vehicle, and leasses don’t have to worry about much except keeping their car in good condition. Of course, lessees can choose to purchase their vehicle once their lease is up, if they so choose. The buyout price can even be negotiated in some situations. Of course, leasing can also be a nightmare if you’re not prepared. If you cause damage to your vehicle inside or out, go over your mileage limits or you haven’t followed the suggested maintenance, it can lead to exorbitant fees. You should also make sure that your insurance company covers your lease properly. If not, you should add gap insurance to cover the difference.

Still not sure if leasing is right for you? Here are a few guidelines to help get you started: Lease: You’d like to save money in the short-term Buy: You’re more interested in long-term savings Lease: You’ll replace your vehicle every three to four years Buy: You’ll drive your new car into the ground Lease: You typically drive less than 15k miles a year Buy: You drive more than 15k miles a year Lease: You use your vehicle for business Buy: Your vehicle is purely personal Lease: You’re worried about the resale value and want more security Buy: You aren’t too concerned about the resale value Lease: Your life is very stable, meaning you won’t rack up leasing fees if you move Buy: Your life is unstable and you don’t want to be tied to a contract’s terms The folks here at Flourish wish you the best of luck in finding your stylish new ride!

When it comes to personal finance, there are some big questions that need real answers. Am I putting enough towards retirement? Am I getting a good price on my home? Am I saving enough? If you’ve ever wondered how much money you should keep in your checking and savings accounts, you aren’t alone. Though the answer isn’t concrete, here are a few general guidelines to help you calculate what’s right for you.

Am I

The Debtor

The Gold Standard You have no high-interest debt, you’re healthy, your car runs like new, you’ll have your job until you retire and you spend your days lounging by the pool and playing tennis on the weekends. Checking: 2 months of expenses Savings: 6-month emergency fund, plus additional savings for your big future plans. If you’ve secured a 6-month emergency fund and have change to spare for your future dreams, you’re in the green. This is what we should all work towards. As for checking, make sure that there’s always enough to pay your bills, plus a little extra “just in case.”

Saving Enough?

Checking: 1 month of expenses Savings: 2 months of expenses Your first priority is paying down your debt, but you still need a little extra saved; the last thing you want is a large, unexpected expense that causes you to dive further down the hole. Once you pay off your debt, then you can focus your money elsewhere.

The Freelancer Checking: 6 months of expenses Savings: As much as possible Your lifestyle is unpredictable, and so are your expenses. There’s no telling if your artwork will sell or if your home business will take off, so be prepared for the worst. When you’re subject to the whims of your clients, it’s a good idea to have a chunk of change on hand in case things don’t go

according to plan.

The Homeowner Checking: 2 months of expenses Savings: 3 to 6 months’ emergency fund Home maintenance is a never-ended endeavor, and being a homeowner, you’re bound to face large, unforeseen expenses. Keep an extra $5-10,000 on hand for when things break, leak or crash. No matter what your current financial situation is, an all-around good rule to follow is this: do what makes you comfortable. If you look in your checking and savings accounts and feel secure with what you see, you’re on the right path. Flourish Magazine | June/2014 31

War Over Salt Going To

public health experts might need to be careful about urging everyone to avoid salt.

People have fought over salt for thousands of years. In both the Old World and the New, these were sometimes pitched battles that took human lives. Venice and Genoa went to war over the control of salt in the 14th century. Access to salt played a critical role in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Today, the clash over salt is a war of words. For decades, public health experts have exhorted Americans to slash salt consumption. Organizations such as the American Heart Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that people over 50 as well as anyone with high blood pressure or diabetes limit sodium intake to 1,500 mg a day (less than half the average daily sodium consumption in the U.S.). Scientists knew that some people with hypertension could control it by cutting back on salt, although a meta-analysis of studies revealed that salt restriction also raised LDL cholesterol and the stress hormones such as noradrenaline, renin and aldosterone (JAMA, May 6, 1998). It comes as a shock to most Americans to learn that epidemiological studies have shown that people consuming the least sodium are at the highest risk of premature death (American Journal of Medicine, March 2006; JAMA, May 4, 2011). If there are downsides to lowering sodium intake,

44 Flourish Magazine | July/2014

The universal warning that Americans need to limit sodium in their diets took a blow, metaphorically speaking, when the Institute of Medicine (IOM) brought out its evaluation of how much sodium restriction is desirable and safe (IOM, May 14, 2013). This prestigious group advises the CDC on health policy. In reviewing recent research, it concluded that lowering excessive sodium intakes would benefit public health, but that the research does not clearly show that limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg daily would save lives. The IOM’s most controversial conclusion was stated cautiously: “The evidence on health outcomes is not consistent with efforts that encourage lowering of dietary sodium in the general population to 1,500 mg/day.” Now, everyone agrees that a diet heavy on lunchmeat, bacon, cheese and french fries provides more salt and fat than is good for us. The scientists are really arguing about realms of salt restriction most people don’t even approach. But does it make sense to try to get everyone to struggle toward a diet that is difficult to achieve unless we are sure the rewards will be significant? It might be better to figure out who is salt-sensitive and learn how to help those people reduce their sodium consumption. Researchers at the University of Virginia have just developed a urine test that can identify salt-sensitive individuals (Clinica Chimica Acta, June 5, 2013). About one out of four adults will develop high blood pressure if they consume too much sodium. For these people, salt restriction

makes sense, though scientists might continue to argue about just how low they should go. One-size-fits-all recommendations are no longer appropriate in an age of personalized medicine. The IOM’s report recognizes this and should be taken seriously by public health authorities. Joe Graedon is a pharmacologist. Look around your local grocery store – what do you see? Shoppers with full carts heading to the checkout? Consumers reading meat labels and checking expiration dates?

ChewyforSteak Safety’s Sake By Sarah G. Mason

As we make food purchases, each of us has a specific set of values that guides our decisions. Though it’s natural to assume that the price of groceries influences us the most, that assumption doesn’t necessarily hold true. According to a recent nationwide online survey by Kansas State University, we consider freshness and safety of food first, then price, and last environmental impact, animal welfare, origin and convenience. These findings are interesting, especially since researchers often assume that consumers take safety for granted – if it comes from a retail outlet, they presume shoppers think it’s safe. However, the truth is that consumers generally don’t have that presumed trust in food safety. In fact, according to the Kansas State survey, safety was the biggest influencing factor when shoppers examined perishable animal products like milk, ground beef and chicken breast. It’s no surprise that consumers are weary to trust commercial meat makers. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that there are approximately 76 million cases

of food-borne illness in the US each year, with 325,000 hospitalizations – most from pathogens found in meat and poultry. So does this mean we should forgo meat for good? Not necessarily. According to former US Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman, America’s meat and poultry is safer than ever before. In fact, he claims that it’s the safest thing we eat because it’s inspected, whereas seafood, fresh fruit and fresh vegetables “are not really inspected.” However, food-borne disease remains an important public health concern. To ensure that you’re purchasing, preparing and storing meat in a safe and healthy way, here are a few recommendations: When buying meat, look for the Safe Food Handling label on packages. This label means the meat has undergone safe processing. In addition, make sure the meat is tightly wrapped and cold to the touch. Gather your other groceries first and pick up the meat last, packaging it separate from your other items.

There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing. Aristotle

It’s best to store meat in the coldest part of the refrigerator or in your refrigerator’s meat bin. Raw meat like chicken breast can be safely stored for three to four days, while ground meat and sausage should only be refrigerated for two. As for the freezer, ground meat can be stored for three to four months, while fresh beef, veal, lamb and pork can last 4 to 12 months. When preparing meat, wash your hands for 20 seconds before, during and after cooking. Never cut raw meat and fresh produce in the same area and certainly not on the same cutting board. If you’re marinating meat before cooking, do so in the fridge. Keep things clean, watch for splatters and disinfect everything when you’re finished!

When cooking, we all know that undercooked meat can lead to problems. Unfortunately, color isn’t a reliable indicator of properly cooked meat. In fact, meat may appear brown before it’s done, especially for whole cuts of meat. On the other hand, fully-cooked meat can still appear pink. The best way to properly cook meat is with a meat thermometer. Not only will this save you from undercooking your chicken, pork and beef, but it will also prevent you from overcooking meat – no more chewy steak for safety’s sake! From Farm

totoSink Table By Sarah G. Mason

Your grocery trip probably looks something like mine. I scour the produce section, choosing the firmest apples, the crispest lettuce, the plumpest grapes. I check out, load up my car and carry my haul home happy. I love the way my fridge looks when it’s recently stocked and the way my fruit basket glows when it’s full. Of course, I can’t help but indulge in a handful of grapes or a slice of a cucumber – they look too good to resist! I, like many of you, am guilty of skipping an important step. My produce goes right from the grocery to the car to my mouth – never does it see a sink. The truth of the matter is that fruits and vegetables see more than dirt between the farm and the table. Apart from having been touched by dozens of farmers, grocery employees and curious customers, produce is often coated with traces of pesticide residue. Though we don’t yet have a complete understanding of the adverse health effects of long-term, low-dose pesticide exposure, researchers have found that pesticides can indeed cause both acute and chronic illnesses in humans. 40 Flourish Magazine | July/2014

In particular, celery, sweet bell peppers, peaches and strawberries top the Environmental Working Group’s famous “Dirty Dozen” list, an annual report of the fruits and vegetables that most often carry pesticide residues. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should cut back on produce – far from it. Instead, it’s important to practice proper food hygiene and to wash fruits and veggies thoroughly before consumption. If you’re someone who gives produce a quick rinse under the sink, you’re on the right path. Plain old water can remove nearly 98 percent of bacteria on the surface of produce, and water also removes soil and debris. Unfortunately, a splash under the faucet isn’t doing you much good in the way of pesticides. Remember, pesticides are specially designed to resist rain and won’t wash away with water. To properly prepare produce for consumption, first wash your hands with antibacterial soap. (There’s no point in cleaning produce if you’ll be eating it with dirty hands!) It’s a good idea to wash the sink, too. When you’re ready to tackle your food, avoid using soap, detergent, bleach or

other toxic chemicals. They’ll leave behind a residue of their own. Instead, consider cleaning your fruits and veggies with a diluted vinegar solution of one part vinegar and three parts water. Let them soak for a few minutes, then rinse clean with water. According to Dr. Joe Kemble, Ph.D., professor of Horticulture at Auburn University, it’s safe to use vinegar to sanitize a variety of fruits and vegetables, and it won’t affect the taste. The way you wash your produce is as important as what you wash it with. Fruits with stems like apples, pears and peaches collect bacteria at the blossom and stem end, so cut off both ends after rinsing. Fruits with rinds like oranges and avocado should still be washed since bacteria can transfer from your hands to the inside. Leafy greens should get a two-minute, cold-water and vinegar soak, followed by a drain in a colander. For veggies with lots of crevices like broccoli, soak for two minutes, cut up and rinse in a colander. We hope these tips help you enjoy your favorite fruits and veggies – the safe way!

Dear Debbie: We have a two-car garage attached to our house and would like to know about painting and color so that it adds some character to the front of the house. Right now it is just a big blank space. Should it match the front door? We have columns flanking our entranceway. – Thomas

House to Home

Dear Thomas: The space that a garage door takes up at the front of a house is often large, and yet we don’t think much about how it looks. Instead, we focus on the front door. While the entryway is a key feature, the entire front face of the house should be taken into consideration when planning exterior decor. It should all look welcoming and connected. Often the garage is positioned forward of the entrance, making it a major focal point. One solution is to add some architectural detailing to the garage face. You can frame it with weather-resistant urethane molding or PVC trim. Choose details that match the home’s architecture to fill out a unified picture. Pilasters that stand vertically to frame the front door can be added to the garage entranceway. Or run a crosshead along the top of the garage with a keystone decorative element placed in the center – also a good place for the house number, as it is clearly visible from the street. 38 Flourish Magazine | July/2014

Decor

Shown here over the garage door is a trellis system by Fypon, www.fypon.com. It creates a visually pleasing frame that enhances the entire exterior view. Both urethane and PVC trims are resistant to moisture and insects and resist rotting, peeling and crumbling, making them a long-lasting, low-maintenance choice. Plan exterior lighting choices that relate to the building’s architecture. Lanterns flanking the garage, along the pathway and beside the front door are essential for safety at night, and also project a cohesive image that is traditional and inviting. Set the lights on a timer so that they will turn on at dusk. It’s a friendly feeling to come home to, and is an added safety feature. For those with a home that could use added detail, why not try window shutters? They can be painted in a contrasting color, along with trimwork. You also can add a fresh color and texture when the roof requires replacing. Look for the newest roofing materials that have long-lasting appeal.

Garage Door

materials has been used on the home shown here, with stone surrounding the front entrance. The stone’s warm gray hues build up some drama set within the monochrome white of the rest of the exterior. The land in front of the house is also an essential part of the overall view. Whether you opt for a lawn or garden or a lowmaintenance ground cover, make sure that you can keep it up. Flowers and greenery planted in an urn don’t need weeding, a true time-saver. A stone pathway lined with wildflowers or a low hedge is magical, and draws the eye pleasingly toward the entrance. Been there, done that By Kat Freestone

Independence Day Tables! TIPS Fourth of July is for lighting up the grill and feasting with friends. Want to know how to get the perfect holiday table without going overboard? The secret is in the theme! Pick your favorite non-flag related motif such as a nautical theme, beach theme, picnic theme or food theme. Choose décor in red white and blue, but avoid anything with stripes or stars. By mixing Old Faithful’s colors with a unique theme, you’ll invite a sense of style and ward off the “been there, done that” look!

1) Pick up red cloth napkins, blue fabric paint and a paint stamp in your favorite shape (we love anchors, flowers, even wine bottles!). Stamp each napkin with the fabric paint and voila, a perfect accent for your festive table. 2) Choose food that compliments the day’s colors: strawberries, blueberries, Hawaiian punch, watermelon and vanilla ice cream. Games By Kat Freestone

July is a time to be outside grilling and spending time with friends and family. Make this Independence Day extra special with a few fun games the whole family can play!

Switch up the rules of word games you already know to make them holiday themed. For instance, play Scrabble with words relating to summer and the Fourth of July – “sun,” “blue” and “flag” are all on the list!

Red, white and blue token tag

like us on Facebook at William Weseman Construction

FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED SINCE 2004 34 Flourish Magazine | July/2014

is a great way to burn off some of that pent up energy. Everyone is given one token that is either red, white or blue. Try to tag other players before they tag you. If you’re tagged, you must give the person who tagged you your token. The first person who tags enough people to get one red, one white and one blue token wins. Too hot outside to run around? Move the game to the pool instead!

FOR THE

Fourth Capture the American flag

is a festive twist on an old favorite.

The red, white and blue naming game is a great sit-down game that anyone can play. Everyone sits in a circle. The first person names something red, the second person names something white and the third person names something blue. The game continues around the circle with each person naming a new item in the red, white and blue order. If you name something that someone already said or you pause too long before you answer, you’re out!

Red, white and blue sidewalk chalk will bring hours of creative fun and add a personal touch to your decorations. We wish you lots of fun this Fourth!

Bubble Giant

If you’re looking for a fun summer craft, we’ve got just the one! Giant bubble makers are easy to put together and a blast to play with. Gather the kids and a few simple items and get ready for hours of fun with enormous, shimmering bubble wands.

Maker

Step 4: Tie the ends of the 65-inch string Step 1: In the bucket, mix together all

You will need:

bubble mixture ingredients. Let the mixture sit overnight – the longer it sits, the better it will work.

For the Bubble Wands:

Step 2: Drill a small hole in one end of

• 2 wooden dowels (36 inches long, ½ inch thick) • 2 small eyelet screws

each dowel rod. Screw one eyelet loop into each hole.

• 2 metal washers • Cotton string • Drill • Tape measure • Scissors

For the Bubble Mixture: • Bucket • 10 cups warm water • ½ cup corn syrup

• 1 cup clear Dawn dishwashing detergent

Step 3: Measure and cut one length of cotton string to 100 inches long and one length of cotton string to 65 inches long. Tie the end of the 100-inch string to one of the eyelets, thread two washers onto the string and then tie the other end of the 100-inch string to the other eyelet.

Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right. Henry Ford

to each eyelet. Your wand is now ready.

Step 5: When the bubble mixture has sat overnight, it’s time to play! Outside in an open area, put the eyelet ends of the dowels together and dip the strings into the bubble mixture. Slowly raise the dowels out of the bubble liquid, keeping them close together. Carefully spread the strings apart by separating the dowels while walking backwards – you will see a bubble wall appear between the strings.

Step 6: As you walk, watch your bubble form! Gently swoop the dowel ends up and close them together to “close” the bubble and set it free! Flourish Magazine | July/2014 35

Tips for Staying Cool During Your Summer Pregnancy

By Ginger Henderson

Beat the Heat Summer pregnancies can often seem downright torturous. Before you melt into a puddle of despair at the thought of facing the hottest months of the year, learn from mothers who have survived the fiery months of sweat and swelling with these tips:

oh

Baby!

“I made sure I did everything I had to do outside of the house in the morning. Since its cooler then, I didn’t have to face a scorching car while on my errands. During the afternoon, I stayed indoors with the fans and air conditioning.” – Lisa

“I picked up one of those squirt bottles with the attached fan. Whenever I’d feel the need, I’d mist my face with water and turn on the fan for a quick cool down.” – Amy “When my husband and I were house shopping, I’ll admit I was a little bit peeved at his insistence that our new house have a pool. That certainly changed once month 8 of my pregnancy hit! I spent every minute I could floating in the cool water. It helped keep me cool, and it also relieved the aches and pains of carrying the baby.” – Marissa

“Thankfully my office is air conditioned, but at the end of my pregnancy in August, no amount of air seemed to be enough. Whenever I felt my internal temperature begin to spike, I went to the ladies room and put a wet paper towel on the back of my neck. It always helped to cool me down and get me through those days.” – Tasha “My feet became so swollen during the last month of my pregnancy that I could hardly bear it. I tried keeping my feet elevated during the day, but when that wasn’t enough I found relief with foot baths. I filled a dishpan with ice and water and soaked my feet until they felt comfortable again. I also kept my feet elevated as I slept, which helped keep the swelling down during the day.” – Michelle “I knew I needed to take more care in keeping myself hydrated, but water was just so blah. I used the opportunity to try out new juices and “mocktails” – cocktails minus the alcohol. When I combined these along with a healthy amount of water, I was able to consume enough liquid to help keep me cool and refreshed.” – Christy

When anticipating a doctor’s visit, it’s important to talk to your kids to pinpoint and alleviate their fears. What may seem like a routine exam to you may actually be causing your child anxiety, even if they don’t say so. In order to make your next doctor’s visit run as smoothly as possible, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Doctor do’s

By Kat Freestone

The Fears

A few woes that top kids’ lists of fears include separation, pain and the unknown. Often, these worries stem from misinformation. In addition, some children may fear the actual doctor, since a doctor’s brisk, efficient manner can come off as cold or unwelcoming to a child. Last, children may harbor guilt about the visit; they believe they have done something wrong and that a visit to the doctor is part of their punishment. All together, these worries and fears can make for an unpleasant experience.

Pre-Visit Prep Before the visit, sit your child down and discuss each of these issues. Explain that you’ll be with them the whole time and encourage them to ask questions regarding any of their uncertainties. Explain the reason for the visit and help them understand what to expect. When you get to the office, have your child introduce themselves to the doctor and open up the door to conversation. By being open and talking to your child, you can help push their worries away.

The Visit

Happily Ever After

When heading to the doctor’s office, there’s one, simple rule: expect the unexpected. No matter whether this is a single checkup or one in a series of many, it’s a good idea to come prepared. Bring portable snacks and drinks, extra diapers and activities like coloring books in case the trip takes longer than expected. For older kids, it’s smart to bring a change of clothes – you never know when they’ll come in handy! Last, consider packing a few goodies to reward good and patient behavior.

After the visit, congratulate your child on a job well done! Consider treating them to a candy bar at the grocery or preparing their favorite meal for dinner that night. By starting little post-doctor visit traditions, you can impress positivity on the experience and help them learn to tolerate – if not look forward to – their next visit!

Ouch! No one likes being poked with needles – especially kids. However, attempting to hide the truth about this all-toocommon procedure from them can only lead to resentment, mistrust and fear. Talk to your child matter-of-factly about what is going to happen and explain to them why shots and vaccinations are important for their health. Say something like, “This is going to keep you healthy so you can grow big and strong.” Use words your child will understand and encourage questions.

You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore. Christopher Columbus

Tips To Help Your Tot Break The Pacifier Habit

By Vivienne Van Eijkelenborg, Difrax

Breaking Up IS HARD TO DO:

Difrax's 15-Day Strategy To Break The Pacifier Habit As any baby will tell you, breaking up is hard to do! When it’s time for your child to say “goodbye” to her pacifier, it can be very emotional and provide quite the struggle. After all, that pacifier was like a good friend that got your child through some tough times and soothed her when she needed it. The good news is that we have tips to help make the transition to paci-free a little less stressful for you and your child. The tips are based on a on a 15-day weaning process and follows a specific structure, but feel free to adapt this to the speed with which your child adjusts to the change. 28 Flourish Magazine | July/2014

Days 1 to 5: Explain to your child that as kids get bigger, they no longer use a pacifier. Point out other kids and people you might run into so they can see who has a soother and who doesn’t. Depending on the age of the child, you can also talk to them about how a pacifier affects their teeth. Then slowly wean your child like you did for breastfeeding. Begin by only offering the pacifier in certain situations, like in the car, when they're hurt, in the crib at nap or bedtime (when it's truly needed for soothing vs. out of habit), then start taking it away one situation at a time. Your child will find comfort through other things, but going cold turkey will be hard on you and your tot. You can come up with other ways to soothe your child such as reading a story or rewarding them with stickers or an extra hug if they're able to go to sleep without the pacifier.

Make sure everyone is on-board with this process! Ensure nannies, babysitters and especially grandma know that you are trying to get rid of the pacifier. It will do you no good to work hard and be the bad guy if grandma is slipping your child one whenever she’s babysitting.

Day 5-15: Take away the pacifier during the day. Let your child know that pacifiers rest and are put to bed during the day. Also you can prick the pacifier with a tiny pinhole, as it will cause the pacifier to become useless. Your child will think it is broken and will not enjoy sucking on it anymore. You can ask the child to earn "pacifier time" if he or she must use it during the day. Use the pacifier as a reward for eating all his vegetables or using the potty. Depending on how old your child is, you can use it to

Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is. Vince Lombardi

Day 15: encourage alone time or room cleaning. You’ll be able to stop offering it eventually, and you’ll have created some healthy habits in your child.

Days 6-10: Tell your child it’s ok to miss the paci but that there are other ways to feel comforted such as a hug or finding an activity he or she enjoys doing like coloring, reading, playing with toys, etc.. Tell him or her that all big kids give up pacifiers. Use your child's current role models (book, TV, video game characters, etc.) to demonstrate who doesn't have a pacifier.

Days 10-12: Make sure you have located all of the pacifiers in the house and ask your child to say "goodbye" to some of them. Pull them out of your diaper bag, purse, dishwasher, under the couch and bed. One look at a pacifier and all your hard work is gone.

Days 11-15: Prepare for the final days of the last pacifier. Your child can also try sleeping without the paci at this point, although you may keep it close by just in case!

Today your child puts the last pacifier into an envelope and sends it to the Pacifier Fairy. Or, have the Pacifier Fairy visit in the middle of the night like the Tooth Fairy, where she takes the pacifier and leaves a gift (usually a stuffed animal or blankie-- something that can bring comfort). You can do it one night only, or leave little things each night that your child is able to go without the pacifier. Good luck with helping your child break the pacifier habit!

Alice Brightsky

Blossoms Interview by Sarah G. Mason

Releasing an album right before giving birth isn’t everyone’s idea of “perfect timing,” but for indie folk rock singer-songwriter Alice Brightsky, Box of Me couldn’t wait any longer. Now, this musician/business woman/new mom doesn’t bother trying to balance the crazy days and busy nights, opting instead for an ebb and flow. Here, Brightsky discusses her journey, motherhood and her passion for music.

26 Flourish Magazine | July/2014

Eighty percent of success is showing up. Woody Allen

Tell me a bit about your background – did you always want to be a musician? I’ve been interested in music since I was very young. Even in grade school, I was always running into my music teacher’s room to teach myself something on the piano or practice something. It’s engrained in me. I got a guitar around the age of 12 but didn’t really pick it up until I was about 16 after a guy broke up with me. He was this incredible rock musician in high school and I was really heartbroken. I made the decision then to become a great guitar player; I started playing and never put it down. By the time I was playing guitar regularly, I was really coming into my own. I started to perform in college and I became pretty well known around campus. That was just the beginning for me. I came to New York City with a dual purpose; on the one hand, I needed to develop and cultivate the interests that I have in the business world, and I also needed to pursue my music.

Tell me about your career – you work full time? Yes, I’m in finance and that’s what I do during the day. It’s a career that I’ve nurtured and cultivated – I call it my “side career” [laughs]. The music industry is tough and a lot of people don’t make it – only one percent do – so I believe in having a way to fund myself.

How would you describe your music style? I think it’s fairly raw on some level; I’m a skillful guitar player and singer, but I’m also very emotional when I play and the music comes from an emotional place. It creates a more raw performance, so I think I’ve got Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Steve Jobs

that edginess. My style of music is very singer-songwriter. There’s a certain genre of people who play an instrument and emote through their instrument and their voice in a lyrical and melodic way; I’d say I fall squarely in that genre. I’ve got a lot of different influences from blues, funk, jazz, hip hop, country, bluegrass – all of those things kind of weave their way into me as a singer-songwriter.

If I ever begin to compromise being a mom then something else has to take a back seat, but so far I feel like my music and my job and everything I’m doing is making me a better mom. For me, I think it’s important to not halt your life. I want to do a multitude of things and involve my family in those things. Life is multifactorial; you’ve got a lot going on, but you have to learn how to shift gears and live that full life.

What’s one of your favorite songs you’ve written and what does it mean to you?

I wouldn’t call it balance because balance implies that I’ve got it all under control and I definitely don’t [laughs] but it’s an ebb and flow.

Gosh. I have hundreds of songs. At different places in time, I’ve had different favorites. I guess if I think about my most recent songs, one of my favorites is Enter this World. Sometimes it’s misinterpreted, but it’s really about me acknowledging that I’m an infant in the world and the older I get the more I realize how little I know.

Tell me a little bit about your album Box of Me – what was it like to release that into the world? Well, it was interesting because I was giving birth to my son at the same time [laughs]. I was birthing two major projects at once. I released the song in May of last year just before my son was born; it wasn’t the best timing, obviously. It’s not great to release a CD and try to promote it when you’re also nursing your son on your couch all day. But it had been on hold for too long, and I really got the impetus to finish it while I was pregnant. I thought about the example I was setting for my son; music is such a big part of my life, so I realized it’s really worth doing. I just had to get it done, it didn’t matter when or how. It was a relief and a release for me to have this thing out in the world.

You work full time, you write songs and you have a 1-year-old – how do you manage to balance things? It’s impossible [laughs]. It’s a little imbalance, always. You just have to embrace it. I’ll do what I’m doing until I keel over, and then something will give – obviously not my son.

What advice do you have for a new mom who’s also working full time? Don’t feel guilty. I felt a lot of conflicted guilt when I went back to work, but I’ve realized that you have to do what’s right for you. Going back to work felt right to me. I need this other part of my life and I need to stimulate this other part of my brain so that I can come home and feel really excited and be the best mom for my son. Other parents may feel like staying home is what’s best for their children, and that’s fine too. Just whatever you decide, don’t feel guilty. There’s always an opportunity to self-correct if you need to. Kids are resilient and we’re all just doing the best we can.

What do you hope to accomplish over the next few years? Gosh, there’s so much. Aside from world peace [laughs], I’d like to achieve a modicum of success with music. I’m obviously putting a lot of time and energy that I don’t have into my music because it’s such a big part of who I am. On the home front, I want to be a good mom, wife, friend, daughter and community member. I want to do things that make a difference with my friends, family and in my community so that I’m not just living in this microcosm of “me me me.” Check out Alice Brightsky’s new focus track “Up Up and Away” off her Box of Me album – available now on iTunes

The

Perfect Cut Interview by Sarah G. Mason

Tell me a bit about your background – how did you get into styling hair?

first Miami salon in the Bal Harbour Shops – it’s very high scale, and it was great. I started opening more salons in South Beach and the Ritz-Carlton and the W Hotel.

Talking to celebrity hairstylist Raphael Reboh about hair is like discussing the Mona Lisa with a painter or Canon in D with a composer. To him, a woman’s hair is an art – one that he’s truly mastered. Here, I talk to Reboh about current hairstyle trends, his upcoming projects and salon practices to beware of. shape of her face and the color of her hair and the color of her eyes, and that’s how you decide how to give her an amazing look.

Do you ever worry about giving someone the wrong haircut?

I started in Paris. I grew up there, so my training started when I was very young. When I was in school, I used to work in salons on Saturdays, so hair styling is very natural for me – it’s in my system. I moved to London because I was very interested in learning how to cut hair with a razor. At the time, that was my dream. I trained in London for a long time and became really amazing at cutting hair with a razor – I could cut short hair, long hair, any type of haircut just with a knife.

What are some of the current projects you’re working on? I’m now doing the Design District, which is huge because that’s going to be the destination in Miami – any top store in the world will be there, and we’ll have a salon there, which I’m very excited about. It’s like SoHo in New York; twenty years ago, SoHo was nothing, but now it’s so expensive and at the top. That’s what this is like. It’s in a smaller area and very condensed but very high end.

You can’t make a mistake with a woman – it’s zero tolerance. I couldn’t. There’s no way you can make a mistake with a woman’s haircut because she’ll suffer tomorrow and the next day and the next month. It’s a terrible thing to do. When you cut hair, you have to enhance her look and her beauty. Most people don’t know what color would look good on them, so you change her color and bring out her beauty and give her an amazing look.

From there, I moved to Montreal and opened my first salon downtown; I worked a lot in New York and I started doing a lot of charity events. I started doing the Golden Globes, Victoria’s Secret and I also started doing a lot of work for magazines. Nineteen years ago I decided to move to Miami, and I opened my

How would you express your hair cutting style?

If I came to your salon, what could I expect?

Hair cutting is very important to me, and I always keep myself sharp in what I do. It’s a challenge, but I always stick with the visuals. I love it. It’s exciting to look at someone’s face before you cut their hair – you see the

In my staff, nobody goes right to the shampoo – there’s no way. You have to sit her down, learn about her, look at her, touch her hair; you need to get the feel. If you don’t get the feel, you aren’t allowed to cut

her hair. That’s what it’s about. It’s like a fingerprint; you’re the only one in the world with your fingerprint. You’re also the only one in the world when you’re sitting in my chair. Nobody has hair like you. It’s very personal.

What’s the biggest mistake you see women make with their own hair? Getting the wrong haircut and the wrong color. Women walk into a salon and they aren’t sure. “Should I do it? Should I not do it? You need to find someone who can help you do what looks best for you. All it takes is two minutes for a hair dresser to look at you and touch your hair. If you walk into a salon and they send you right to the shampoo, they’ll cut your hair without knowing anything about you – you’re a sacrifice. It’s a pity. Women should be careful – as soon as you see that, run away. Lots of times busy moms don’t have extra time or money to spend on their hair. What can a mom do that’s quick and easy to make her feel great? Start from the beginning - get an amazing haircut. When you have a great haircut, you don’t need to do anything. You wash it, dry

it and you’re ready, and it looks amazing. The key is that it grows well so you don’t have to do anything for three or four months. Plus, you’re saving money. Women may want to get a cheap haircut, but they really suffer because they need to get it cut again in three or four weeks, so you’re really not saving anything.

So it’s worth it to spend extra money on a haircut? Well, the money isn’t everything. I’ve seen a $300 haircut that was terrible. It’s a tricky thing, but the most important thing is to analyze your hair stylist and pick someone who you’re comfortable with. If you aren’t sure, look at pictures that you like. Bring them in and show the hair stylist what you have in mind. Don’t go in and not know what’s going to happen.

What haircuts are currently in style? For the last 12 years it’s all been about long hair. That’s pretty sad. Long hair is nice, but lots of women look amazing with short hair. It makes them much sexier. It’s such an exciting haircut and a difficult haircut to do, but short hair can be the hottest thing. Short hair is coming in big time.

When you’re at the grocery, do you put your cart away or leave it in the parking spot? Do you thank your waitress when she refills your water? Do you hold the door for the person behind you? The decisions we make define our characters. Let’s aim to make them beautiful. Please and Thank You We teach these words to children, but they’re often forgotten by adults: A please out of politeness and respect, a thank you to show appreciation and gratitude. Make a habit of using both.

Compliment Others – And Yourself A simple compliment can really brighten someone’s day. Whether you notice a coworker’s new haircut or you like a passerby’s dress, speak these praises aloud. We become what we think about. Earl Nightingale

Inside

Don’t get too caught up complimenting others, however. It’s always important to remind yourself that you’re beautiful, too.

while. Whether it’s a friend, family member or spouse, they’ll feel surprised and appreciated by your act of kindness.

Be A True Friend

How Are You?

When a friend calls you feeling upset, don’t hurry through the conversation so you can get back to watching TV. Listen, offer advice and check on her the next day. There’s nothing like the ties of a strong friendship; never take them for granted.

When you see an acquaintance, it’s easy to ask “How are you?” without any real interest. Instead, be more specific. Ask them what’s new at work or if they’ve seen any good movies lately. If you do ask them how they are, mean it.

Keep Secrets

Reject In Flattery

It can be difficult not to spill the juicy details of a fresh secret to all of your closest friends, but resist. It’s not worth breaking someone’s trust for a moment of excitement. Besides, if you share a secret, it will probably be your last.

Whether Mr. Singleton asks you out to dinner or your friends invite you bowling, if you must reject, do so kindly. Don’t laugh in his face or exclaim how much you hate bowling. Instead, thank them honestly and turn down the offer with a smile.

My Treat

We can all take small steps to help others, show kindness and grow more beautiful on the inside.

Singersongwriter Tina Shafer is a mom with a spirit as resilient as the sun. Despite losing her parents, her husband and her home, Shafer hasn’t stopped living her passion. Today, this inspiring role model talks to me about her new album The Good Ones, discusses her hardships and her triumphs, and gives wise advice to moms with a dream. 16 Flourish Magazine | July/2014

Definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement. W. Clement Stone

Tina Shafer Interview by Sarah G. Mason

SINGER-SONGWRITER

Tell me a little bit about your background – have you always been interested in music? Yes, I’m actually from a very musical home; my mother was a composer. I’m originally from outside Cleveland, Ohio and I started at a conservatory when I was four years old. I’ve always been involved in music.

What about your style? How would you describe your music? My style is really true singer songwriter. Think of Carole King and all the truly great 70’s sounds, that’s where I’m from and that’s my style.

You recently released an album – how has that experience been for you? Yes, my album is called The Good Ones and it’s dedicated to both my parents whom I lost recently. It’s kind of the tapestry of everything I’ve lost and things I’ve gained. I went through a divorce and I lost my home – I never thought I’d be in such a position. Since then, I’ve built things back. I’m happy again and I’m in a relationship. It’s unbelievable how resilient the human spirit can be. I wanted to share my experience because a lot of people my age have gone through a lot of loss at this point in their lives with parents and marriages.

It sounds like there’s a lot of emotion in these songs – does your music specifically target people who have gone through a hard time?

nicest way you can be. I’ve always found a way to get things done in a ladylike way, but I’ve maintained being a strong woman, too. I’m proud that I’ve been able to show that to my kids through example.

What advice do you have for moms with an artistic dream who don’t feel like they have the opportunity to pursue it? I think your opportunity is created by your own thoughts. If you want it badly enough and you can see it, it will happen for you. When I moved to New York, I didn’t know a soul. I continued to focus and pursue my dreams; I knew I wanted to be a writer, I knew I wanted to perform, and I always found ways to do it. Just keep that focus and some things will eventually open up and then other things will open from that – it’s amazing. You need to have a really clear vision of what you want and don’t take your mind off of it. Do something little every day, and do the little things well.

Shines On alive,” and that means that you should spend five minutes every day doing your passion. Even if you don’t think you can fit it into your day, just devote five minutes. That time really builds.

What are your plans for the future? My plan is to continue to write music. I also run the New York Songwriter’s Circle – I started hosting and booking it 23 years ago. It’s a historical showcase where we meet once a month on the first Monday of the month, and I promote other artists there. I’ve had artists there such as Norah Jones, Lana Del Rey, Gavin Degraw and Taylor Swift. I believe in promoting great original music to the public, and I’d love to continue to do that. I love to give back in that way. When I moved here there was nothing like the New York Songwriter’s Circle, and it really is a community for songwriters, so I’m very proud of the work I do there. Be sure to check out Shafer’s new album

So even if you have very little time The Good Ones on iTunes and visit her website TinaShafer.net today! to devote, you can still pursue your passion? You really can do what you set your mind to. It’s so important to do a little something every day. A term we use in my family is “five to stay

I think my music is for a lot of people. I’ve sold a lot of records to – this sounds crazy – but to rehab programs and twelve step programs. I think people can find inspiration and healing in my songs. Those who have seen the dark side of life seem to really love my record, and I’m grateful that my music touches people in that way.

You’re a mom, too. What kind of obstacles do moms with an artistic passion face? I’m going to tell you, I also run a company and I’ve sold 32 million records in my life, and as a women, you have to be better than the best, because it’s still a man’s world. You have to be unbelievably relentless in the We must balance conspicuous consumption with conscious capitalism. Kevin Kruse

Crazy

Don’t Drive Co-Workers

While working in close proximity to other co-workers there are a few common-sense guidelines to take that may not be so common for some to comprehend. Here are a few things to avoid that will help in not driving your co-workers crazy.

Grow up When sending emails, avoid using text-speak like “LOL” or “OMG” or “SMH.” If you’re really mature you probably don’t know what any of that means, so you’re already ahead of the curve. The main thing here is it’s simply not professional to “snd emls lyk dis.”

Be quiet

Don’t gossip

The office is already filled with the sounds of printers, ringing phones and those “loud” talkers, so don’t add to it by listening to music or watching videos without headphones, banging on your keyboard or being a loud talker yourself.

Refrain from talking about your co-workers’ or bosses’ personal lives behind their backs. You never know who may be listening and, more importantly, it’s counter-productive. If you do talk about a co-worker when they’re not around, keep it positive.

Don’t ask

Don’t brag

Avoid personal life

Be on point

If you land a big promotion, don’t celebrate too wildly in front of others who may be struggling to get a raise themselves. Also, if you’re caught up on your work and have nothing to do, don’t brag; it may ruffle the feathers of a swamped co-worker. Instead, offer to help others get caught up.

Don’t make or take personal calls or texts unless it’s an emergency or brief in nature. No one wants to hear your drama, so clock out and take it outside on your cell. The same can be said about unloading your personal issues – like paying bills and dealing with children – on others when they simply ask, “How’s it going?”

Don’t show up late for meetings or arrive unprepared. The meeting has been scheduled for days or even weeks ahead, so do everyone a favor by showing up five minutes early ready to deliver whatever part of the meeting you are responsible for executing. Otherwise, you’re wasting everyone’s time and the company’s money.

Fix it

No whining

If there’s a problem that was created by someone else that can be corrected, then do so. Don’t just complain about it repeatedly. Usually everyone knows who dropped the ball anyway, so bringing more attention to it is just counterproductive. Be a true team player and fix it so everyone can move on.

Don’t complain about your job, your boss or your co-workers. Every job has its pros and cons – just deal with it. No matter what you are complaining about, there is someone who has it worse than you, or doesn’t even have a job to complain about. If you’re truly that unhappy with your job, there is always a simple solution.

Smell good Be aware of personal hygiene such as body odor and bad breath. If you ride a bike or walk to work, bring deodorant to re-apply before funking up your cubical. On the flip side, don’t overuse cologne or perfume. The same can be said for foods. If you bring something like a tuna sandwich, take a quick lunch break outside. Then when you’re done, use breath mints or gum. 14 Flourish Magazine | July/2014

If there’s something you can figure out on your own (such as with a quick Google search), then just do it. Don’t interrupt your co-workers work flow by asking them simple questions. Look it up yourself.

I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. Michael Jordan

The Taming of the

Business Bully

As almost any woman can tell you, there are times—in both life and business—when a man’s behavior is not a case of bias against women in business, it is bullying– plain and simple. Male bullies try to dominate and intimidate women physically, verbally, or both.

By Susan T. Spencer; briefcaseessentials.com

Soon after buying a large meat processing company, I ran into an ugly situation with the “macho” buyer for my single biggest customer—one of the largest purchasers of deli meats in the Northeast region of the country. I inherited a business relationship that was tenuous at best and I knew that my initial meeting with the buyer would make or break my company’s chances of keeping the business. Mickey, a short, paunchy, 45-year-old man, walked with a swagger that announced he was in charge. As the vice president of purchasing for more than 20 years, he had considerable influence and was used to getting what he wanted. My first meeting with Mickey was one that he arranged—dinner at a nearby restaurant where I was expecting to meet several other 12 Flourish Magazine | July/2014

employees of his company as well. Only one other person joined us—Mickey’s sales manager—who was dismissed halfway through dinner. As soon as the sales manager was gone, Mickey moved closer to me.

one with the buyer, but business issues remained to be solved—next time I needed a different strategy.

I tried to move away without being obvious, but it didn’t work. When he tried to put his hands on my leg under the table, I got up and went to the ladies’ room. When I returned, he started reaching for my leg again. I excused myself a second time, realizing that if it happened a third time and he was rebuffed, it would embarrass him and I’d probably lose the business.

I initially thought I would be able to set up a business meeting at my company and bring lunch into the conference room. That idea was nixed when I invited Mickey to lunch and he replied “I only conduct business at night—over dinner.” I realized that if I was going to meet him again, and keep both the business and my dignity, I needed to change the dinner dynamics. My solution was to bring someone along with me who understood the problem and could watch my back.

Fortunately, by the time I got back to the table after the second trip to the wash room, Mickey was bombed, which gave me the opportunity to ask for help escorting him out of the restaurant. I had survived round

Barbara, my company’s CFO, a slim, attractive blond in her late 30s, was my right-hand “man.” I told her about Mickey’s inappropriate, amorous advances—we came up with a winning “battle plan” and

He didn’t know she was coming, but he was only too happy to be dining with not one, but two blonds. When we got to the table we sat on either side of Mickey, understanding that he’d have to turn his head constantly to talk to each of us, leaving him no time to play tricks under the table. When he got up to go to the restroom, we took the opportunity to do the same— together—so we were never separated from each other. Mickey was in his glory, being the center of attention and entertaining two attractive,

He basked in the envious looks and comments from other men walking by, and he was so busy holding court and trying to impress us that he forgot all about trying to grab a leg under the table. I ended up keeping the contract and preserving the relationship with Mickey, although I made sure I never had to go out with him again; I hired a sales manager, Richard, who Mickey knew, and they did their guy thing together. Stretch

to your Back-to-School

Budget

July’s Hot Deals Denim While it seems nearly impossible to think of needing blue jeans in the midst of summer’s sweltering heat, if you know your child has likely outgrown last winter’s stock, this is the time to buy. Retail trends have pushed “back to school” sales earlier, so expect to see some great deals on denim jeans popping up around this time.

When it comes to stretching those backto-school dollars, knowing when to shop is as important as knowing what to buy. Use our shopping list to make the most of your back to school budget. 8

Flourish Magazine | July/2014

Laptops and Tablets With college students checking items off their “must haves” lists, retailers are scrambling to catch buyers before it’s too late. Watch for these deals if you’re in the market for a new purchase or upgrade.

School Supply Loss Leaders In July, stores work hard to pull shoppers in, and they often achieve this through loss leaders. Loss leaders are items that are offered at rock-bottom prices in hopes of luring shoppers inside to purchase additional items. Watch for these offerings and grab them when you see them, but don’t fall into the trap of buying everything else on your list while you’re in the store. Otherwise, your savings will quickly be eaten away by higher prices on additional items.

August’s Hot Deals Dorm Room Furniture If you’re looking to outfit your college student’s first home away from home, now is the time to shop. While sales often begin in early August (sometimes even in late July), the best deals most often come around in late August, so don’t be afraid to hold out for awhile.

School Supply Loss Leaders August is prime shopping season for back to school supplies such as crayons, glue sticks and markers. These can most often be found for great prices during August, but be sure to watch prices on additional items on your list that aren’t included in the loss leader category. Stores often look to make up on these loss leaders by increasing prices on other necessary items. If possible, use last year’s leftovers until late August or September when retailers begin marking back to school items for clearance.

How to

Fight

Comparison I was talking to a friend this week about things that affect women. Isolation, loneliness, feeling overwhelmed...these seemed at the top of the list of challenges we women face. But the thing we agreed seems to be the biggest challenge to women is a 10 letter word that can completely destroy your happiness and self-worth: COMPARISON.

By Kelly Stamps

small and our bodies are not what we wish they could be. We trade in our love for our best possessions, for wishes of things we think we want but really don’t exist. How do you fight it? How do you keep the comparison game away? Do you count your blessings? Do you find joy in the mundane? Do you get perspective by looking at those less fortunate or remembering how lucky you are to have what you DO have?

Do you suffer from it? It’s impossible not to. In this crazy internet world we all live in, we are bombarded with pretty pictures on Facebook along with updates about amazing vacations, new homes, brilliant children and Prince charming husbands. We take a look at our own lives and we can’t live up. Suddenly the homes we love look small and dirty and cluttered. Our husbands seem unromantic and boring. Our wardrobes are 6

I just turned 40. My hair is gray. I have wrinkles around my eyes. My body does NOT look like a college co-ed anymore. It can be a little depressing. And then I think about classmates from high school and college who are gone already. I’m lucky enough to still be here to enjoy my friends and family – that is worth all the wrinkles I have acquired.

FIGHT IT. Fight the urge to compare yourself to other women, to other moms, to other wives. God

created you to be YOU. He made you with the crooked nose or wide hips for a reason. He made you the mom of your kids because he knew you would be the BEST mom for them. He paired you with your husband because he knew you would be the best help mates for each other. He has you living where you are for a reason. He wants you to find joy in where He has you. My oldest daughter is headed to kindergarten this year and it might not happen in the next year or two but she will start comparing herself to others. And I dread that. I have two girls. I want them to be confident in who they are and avoid the comparison trap. I worry about myself comparing either girl to their classmates – socially, academically or athletically. I hope that I will always see how unique they are and celebrate their individual strengths so they will celebrate themselves! I try to teach them even now that life is not fair and we don’t always win or succeed. I just want them to be happy with who they are as much as I want the same feeling for myself.
