having a healthy period In Chinese medicine, women’s menstruation or female period is the most important factor that determines women’s health. That’s the reason why every Chinese medicine doctor will ask about your menstruation cycle to gauge your health no matter what ailments you have. Chinese medicine knows that perfect menses can only be achieved by the full cooperation and balance between every organ, and women with perfect menses can avoid many serious diseases.

8

Flourish Magazine | August/2014

In fact, Chinese medicine believes that a normal and healthy body should function as it is designed to do. The female body is programmed to undertake monthly cycles of hormonal fluctuations to prepare for fertilization of her ovum and the support of a healthy pregnancy. Since menstruation is a natural process, a healthy woman should not experience any pain or discomfort related to the period that currently is the norm with most American women. Let’s start with the definition of normal or perfect menstruation cycle. The normal period should simply be bleeding for approximately 5 to 7 days of every 27 to 30 days with clean bright red blood and sufficient volume. The number of days of both the period and the cycle should be consistent from month to month. There are rare exceptions to the timing if timing is the only symptom. The only other symptom of the period, if any, should be a slightly full sensation in the breast just before the period comes on. Any other symptoms indicate an imbalance that should be treated by a skilled Chinese medicine practitioner as soon as possible to prevent more serious problems later in life. In Chinese medicine theory, the menses come from monthly saved nutrition by women in order to support pregnancy. The nutrition is accumulated in the breasts all month until it’s time for the cycle. If a woman is pregnant, the nutrition will be used to support healthy pregnancy, otherwise it will be discharged along with the period. That’s why a woman should feel tenderness and fullness in her breasts prior to her menses starting. If the nutrition cannot travel on the normal pathway, from breasts to Chong meridian to uterus, it will go elsewhere and provide a good environment for undesirable cell growth. Where the nutrition accumulates determines what western disease women may get. If the nutrition stays in the ovaries, uterus, or breast, women will receive western diagnosis like cancer, cyst, nodule or fibroid. Nutrition that reverts to the heart tends to develop into a western diagnosis of lupus. When nutrition reverts to the spine, the western diagnosis is usually leukemia. When the

nutrition enters the lung, there might be lung cancer. And so on.... So now we know it is very crucial to make sure all menstruation blood is discharged fully and completely. There are many teachings in Asia about how to protect yourself during period but not much in America, probably because they are deemed oldfashioned stricture. The most important ideas in here are: 1. Avoid anything that will block the flow of blood. 2. Conserve the energy and keep warm. During menstruation, women should NOT: 1. Eat or drink cold things or expose oneself to cold. If you go out in the cold without enough clothing, your body will tighten up trying to conserve heat. The inside of your body is the same; cold food, drink, or environment will make blood vessels tighten up, then the blood cannot flow properly. 2. Swim or bath (warm/hot showers are good). Swimming or taking a bath will put all the pressure of the water back up into the uterus, preventing the proper flow of blood (think how heavy a gallon of water or juice is). 3. Have sex or use tampons often. Sex will obviously push the blood back. Tampons are just like a dam on the river. 4. Ingest caffeine, white sugar and saturated fat. Prostaglandins are big players in the muscle tension. The more muscle tension a woman experiences, the more likely the blood flow to the reproductive organs will be adversely affected. Eating saturated fat leads to specific prostaglandin formation in the body that promotes muscle tension. Eating unsaturated fat leads to specific prostaglandin formation that promotes muscle relaxation. Caffeine and white sugar have the same effect as the saturated fat. Avoiding saturated fat and the other advertisement

foods mentioned, while eating more unsaturated fat can help alleviate lower abdomen muscle tension and thus, premenstrual and menstrual cramping. During menstrual cycle, women SHOULD 1. Walk 30-60 minutes daily to promote the blood flow. 2. Drink Ginger tea plus cane sugar if cramping is present. 3. Blow-dry the hair after shower in order to keep the body warm. With proper care, women should not suffer each month, live on pain killers or period regulators, seek surgery or wait for menopause. Flourish Magazine | August/2014

An interview with yoga instructor

Chrissy Carter

10 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

“A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him. Sidney Greenberg

Swapping

BuSINESS SuITS FOR

Yoga Pants As a former Wall Street exec, Chrissy Carter has seen her fair share of the fast life. And yet, the world of sales and stocks wasn’t Carter’s true calling, so she traded her business suits for yoga pants and embarked on a new journey of self-discovery. Now, with 10 years of yoga instruction under her belt, this businesswomenturned-yogi is ready to release her newest DVD: yoga for Belly, Butt & Thighs.

You haven't always been a yoga instructor – tell me a little about your background and what led you to make the switch. Before I became a full time teacher, I used to work on Wall Street as an equities sales trader, managing stock orders for institutional clients. I was right in the middle of the action and I had a lot of fun. It was also extremely stressful, not only because of the nature of the work and the environment, but also because I knew deep down that I wasn’t where I belonged. I felt unsettled knowing that I wasn’t able to access my potential in that career. I turned to yoga as a way to reduce my stress, but what I found was that it took me exactly where I needed to go—inward.

Do you remember when you were first introduced to yoga? What was your impression? I was first introduced to yoga in college by a dance professor who used yoga postures to warm us up for class. I remember being intrigued and not knowing why. The standing poses made me feel strong, but the breathing made me feel calm. I don't think I’d ever experienced that union before. I was already on the path of self-understanding but didn't yet have the tools to start digging. Yoga gave me the tools to excavate and study myself with patience and compassion.

You've been teaching yoga for 10 years – what's the biggest change you've seen in yourself over that time period? I'm more tolerant. I feel like I'm learning how to sit with reality—to look at my life and myself in the eye—and breathe. I believe that yoga has given me the gift of self-acceptance.

Do you have to be an avid yogi to gain benefits from yoga? No. Even a little bit of yoga can help us create space in our bodies and minds. The postures constitute only a small fraction of what yoga is. Practicing kindness, honesty and devotion, for example, is just as important as practicing Downdog. The Bhagavad Gita reminds us that “On this path no effort is wasted, no gain is ever reversed; even a little of this practice will shelter you from great sorrow.”

Tell me about your newest DVD Yoga for Belly, Butt & Thighs -what makes this DVD unique? The belly, butt and thighs are all integral parts of core stability. Core stability is sometimes confused with abdominal strength, but the truth is, great looking abs are useless if they don't understand how to communicate with the rest of the body. Core strength is really about integration, and a strong core is one that anchors you to your center when you’re being pulled away from it. It’s not just about strength, it’s about knowing how to apply that strength so you can better respond to the moment at hand. This DVD is unique because it targets each area and then teaches you how to integrate and apply this strength to yoga. It’s designed to empower you by teaching you how to move your body as a strong, cohesive whole.

What part of this DVD's launch are you most excited for? Are you nervous for the launch at all? I'm excited for the launch! I’m excited about what I hope are the surprise benefits of

“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.” Bill Cosby

strengthening these problem areas: more agility, confidence and a deeper connection to our center. I hope to help people feel more anchored in themselves.

What's the benefit of doing yoga at home? Doing yoga at home helps to strengthen your intuition by encouraging you to listen to the teacher within. A home practice invites you to go at your own pace and investigate what resonates with you in that moment. The great thing about practicing with a DVD is that through the repetition of practicing the same sequence you can get a real sense of your own growth. You can also pause the DVD if you need to rest or if you want to linger a little longer in a pose. You can also rewind and listen to an instruction again, or try the pose again.

What's one quick tip from your DVD you can share with us today? Building strength and awareness in the body takes time, patience and practice. When you tune into your breath, it will teach you how to create ease and space in the body, especially when a pose (or life!) becomes challenging.

Your philosophy is to "live yoga on and off the mat." What do you mean by that? To live your yoga is to abide in the heart of your experience. Living your yoga means taking the tools you learn on the mat and applying them in real time—in the midst of washing your dishes, or in the process of creativity, or in the heat of an argument. My yoga practice becomes relevant when I can access my own truth in everyday life, and to live my yoga is to put my practice into practice where and when it matters most.

About Chrissy Carter Chrissy Carter has been teaching yoga for 10 years. She is currently a senior teacher, teacher trainer and anatomy teacher at YogaWorks in New York. Chrissy is passionate about teaching intelligent yoga with clarity and compassion and believes in creating a space where students can practice selfawareness without judgment. She is known for her ability to demystify postures and yoga philosophy, encouraging her students to live their yoga both on and off the mat. Chrissy has appeared in Yoga Journal, The New York Times and Whole Living Magazine, and is a featured talent on GaiamTV. Beginning Yoga (Gaiam) was her first DVD and her second title, Yoga for Belly, Butt, and Thighs, will be released September 2014. Flourish Magazine | August/2014 11

Ian

Anthony Dale Interview by Sarah G. Mason, Photo by Gabriel Goldberg

Ian Anthony Dale is more than just Mr. Dreamy – he’s a passionate actor and player in the new TNT summer crime drama Murder in the First. Here, this handsome hunk gives us the lowdown on the making of this suspenseful series, his own rise to stardom and yes, even a bit about his love for furniture making!

From Behind the Curtain to Center Stage

12 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

“The man who has confidence in himself gains the confidence of others.” Hasidic Proverb

Tell me a bit about your background – how did you get into acting? I discovered acting when I was a junior in high school. Some of my friends were auditioning for a one-act play that was casting at the time, and they encouraged me to audition as well. Prior to that, I’d had no acting experience. I was a shy kid, I didn’t talk very much, so the idea of going up on stage and auditioning and putting myself out there in such a vulnerable way – I was terrified. My instinct was to say “No! Absolutely not,” but they were very encouraging so I begrudgingly agreed. I was terrified, but somehow what I did up on that stage earned the attention of my drama teacher and I was casted in the play. That led to my discovery of the theatre and I quickly fell in love with this different, exciting, creative world. The ability to make someone laugh or make someone cry is something that’s moving and powerful. It’s a pretty cool world.

Was there a certain moment when you realized, “Hey, I could actually do this for a living.”? Sometimes I still wonder if I can do this for a living. I feel fortunate any time I’m able to get a job and continue to make a living as an actor because it’s rare. I think only about 2 percent of all actors make over $5,000 a year. I feel really blessed that I’ve been able to make a living for the past 12 years, but I’ll never feel completely secure. As long as I can make a living, though, I’m living my dream.

So tell me a bit about Murder in the First – what’s the premise? It’s a complex murder mystery that intimately dissects a single case over the course of 10 episodes. The two main detectives working the case are played by Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson, and in the

center of this investigation is a Silicon Valley whiz kid played by Tom Felton. He’s very much like a Mark Zuckerberg: Young and powerful with a lot of influence. We asked, “What would happen if someone like that were thrown into a double homicide investigation?”

What’s your character Lieutenant Jim Koto like? He’s a young, very ambitious Lieutenant of the San Francisco Police Department. He’s someone who wakes up in the morning, looks at himself in the mirror and says, “I’m going to be the mayor of San Francisco.” He floats between the world of cops and detectives and the world of the politicians. As the plot unfolds, you’ll see how his ambition clouds his judgment.

Would you say your character is anything like you in real life? We’re definitely both ambitious. When you’re really ambitious, you have a hard time recognizing the successes along the way. In my own career, I’ve had some really wonderful people remind me, “Hey, stop and smell the roses every once in a while.” So yeah, I’d say that Koto is very ambitious and I can relate to that.

that are a little more on the serious side, but I love to make people laugh. I can’t imagine a better feeling than to make others laugh.

What’s next for you? I just bought my first house, and I’m so excited about working on it. I have a background in furniture making and I’ve got several remodeling projects planned. I have the tendency to fall off the map whenever I’m working on a piece of furniture or a different project. I imagine I’ll be difficult to get ahold of over the next few weeks [laughs].

Any last thoughts on Murder in the First? I had such a great time working on it. There are good experiences and bad ones, but Murder in the First was all good. I can’t wait for people to see it and I hope they love it. Be sure to tune in to TNT’s Murder in the First premiering Mondays.

What’s something that you think Murder in the First does really well? It balances the murder mystery with the character drama really well. You’ve got a very complex, well-written murder mystery that keeps you guessing and wanting more after every episode. At the same time, it gives you these really rich, developed characters who you become invested in. Their lives, journeys, struggles – you begin to care for them deeply.

Apart from crime drama, what’s a genre you’d be interested in exploring? I haven’t done a whole lot of comedy. I tend to play characters

for Largest Swimming Lesson

Broken!

Last month, thousands of children and adults came together to set a new Previously, global record for the World’s Largest the world record for the Swimming Lesson (WLSL). largest simultaneous swimming lesson was 32,450 participants hosted by 432 facilities in 13 countries. This year, Team WLSL pre-event registration numbers reached over 40,000 participants. Gainesville, too, beat its own record of 284 participants when 358 residents showed up at one of three participating Gainesville pools to help make history and to send the message that swimming lessons save lives. Tragically, drowning remains the leading cause of unintended death for children age one to four, and it’s the second leading cause of death for children 13 and under. Research shows that formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent, and even children as young as one can benefit from an introduction to swimming. These numbers are especially important to Floridians since many of us own pools or live by someone who does.

your toddler and their safety. When spending time near a pool, lake or the ocean, many parents utilize a “watch card” – a card that’s handed off in 15-minute intervals to make it clear who’s 100 percent in charge of watching the kids. Never rely on floaties or older children to keep young ones safe around the water and always enforce poolside rules from a young age – no running or horseplay around the edge of the water and no swimming without an adult present. Learning CPR should be at the top of your to-do list and of course, signing your children up for formal swimming lessons is the best present a parent can give.

To help keep toddlers safe around water, it’s essential that you stay vigilant. Being by the water with your child isn’t enough – you must put the phone away, disregard distractions and place your total focus on 14 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

How to

Stay Cool While Exercising

in the Summer

Heat by: kirsten Nielsen

gorgeous, warmer weather is finally here, but the record-setting cold of last winter has somehow already turned into a blistering summer heat. With these rising temperatures, exercising can be brutal; what was once an easy walk around the block now leaves you drenched in sweat, and a 3-mile run can feel like a marathon! If you want to keep up with your fitness goals during the scorching Florida summers, making some slight changes can help your body cope with the extreme temperatures. Here are some of our tips for exercising in the summer heat:

1) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate Always important, but vital during hot weather. Make sure you stay hydrated! You will sweat much more profusely during summer workouts compared those in cooler months, so be sure to drink plenty of water. Also, stay away from alcoholic or caffeinated beverages; a study by Maughan et al. featured in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that these dehydrate rather than hydrate you.

2) Have a back-up plan There’s no shame in canceling your outdoor workout in favor of exercising in an indoor gym or at home! If the experts are warning about extreme heat or high smog in your area, it’s best to delay your workout for a day when conditions are less extreme. 16 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

3) Wear the Right Clothing When you're exercising in high heat, stick to loose, lightweight and light-colored clothing in a breathable fabric. These types of clothing wick sweat away and will help keep you feeling cool during your workout. Hats or visors can also be great additions to your summer workout wardrobe, as they can both shade your face and keep sweat out of your eyes.

4) Ease In If you're not used to high temperatures, let your body slowly acclimate to the conditions. In the June 2008 issue of Cell Stress Chaperones, researchers showed that it can take up to 15 days for our bodies to get used to extreme heat. So give yourself time to adjust! Start off with slow and easy workouts, then build up intensity and duration over a week or two. If you are just starting out, build up your fitness inside a gym or in your home before attempting to exercise in the high heat.

5) Check the Weather Florida weather can vary wildly from day to day (and even hour to hour!), so be sure to check the weather forecast before planning a workout. It may be 95 and sunny at at 1 pm, but that dependable afternoon thunderstorm could significantly lower the temperature and humidity for the rest of the day.

6) Time Your Workouts If it's going to be sweltering, plan your workouts for the cooler parts of the day: early morning or after sun-down. If you absolutely must work out in the middle of the day, try to limit sun exposure by exercising in a shaded area. Gainesville has some wonderful paved paths such as the Gainesville-Hawthorne trail that are shaded by trees and secluded from traffic.

7) Wear Sunscreen Nothing makes an outdoor workout worse than battling a brutal sunburn for days after. Always apply at least a SPF 15 sunscreen before working out outdoors; your skin will thank you!

8) Know the warning signs As invigorating as it can be to exercise in the fresh air, be on the lookout for signs that you are pushing yourself too far. According to Marjorie J. Albohm, the president of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, you should immediately take a break and drink some water if you experience dizziness, muscle weakness or nausea. You can also switch your exercising to something a little more summer-friendly. Running around at the beach or pool can be a great workout, and you can bring the whole family!

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” Pablo Picasso

Which is

Worse Working out alone or with others? You strap up your sneakers, pop in your ear buds and prepare to hit the gym alone, as usual. You suddenly get a call from a friend inviting you to join their workout. You hesitate; this will mess up your strict workout plan, and what if they do something too hard? Or too easy?

By Sarah Mason

It’s better to forgo your solo workout and say yes to your friend, since it’s worse to workout alone. Not only does working out with a buddy ignite your inner competitor, it motivates you to try new exercises and can double both your exercise duration and your calorie expenditure. Plus, one Oxford University study found that when team members worked out together, they released twice as many feel-good endorphins as those who exercised alone.

Picture Perfect By kat freestone The Thread Trick Before someone snaps your picture, pretend that there’s an invisible thread pulling your nose toward the camera lens. It sounds silly, but this helps reverse our natural tendency to pull our chin towards our necks when we smile – and erases the dreaded double chin!

The Ceiling Trick Right before your picture is taken, tilt your head straight up toward the ceiling. This will stretch the skin under your chin, helping to erase some of those natural creases. Be quick though, it only lasts for a second!

The Eye Level Trick Always have the cameraman shoot from eye level or higher – to be subtle, ask someone tall to take the picture. This angle is most flattering. 18 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

Looking your best at a moment’s notice isn’t always easy, but with a few simple tricks you can turn any picture from unflattering to unforgettable!

The Contour Trick

The Lipstick Trick

Pick a matte bronzer that’s a shade or two darker than your natural skin tone and apply it along your hairline, jawline and the hollows of your cheeks. This adds definition to your face to make it picture perfect.

No matter how dashing red lipstick may look in person, it often appears dark or gothic in pictures. Instead, choose a rosy pink hue that brings out your natural lip color.

The Breathing Trick

The shape of your face determines which eyebrow angle works best for you. Angled brows pair well with round and oval faces, a soft brow arch looks best on a heart-shaped face, and a round brow helps soften the angles of a square face. Groom your brows to suit your face so that every picture looks perfect.

If you find that your mouth looks tense in pictures, breathe through it! You’re smile will look instantly more natural.

The Degree Trick This red carpet move may sound complicated, but it’s sure to make you look your best every time! Step 1: Lift your chin slightly by 10 degrees. Step 2: Turn your whole body 10 degrees to the side. Step 3: Keep your feet where they are, and turn the right side of your body 20 degrees back. Step 4: Cross your left leg in front. And voilà!

The Eyebrow Trick

The Lemon Trick Before you say cheese, pretend you’re squeezing a lemon between your shoulder blades to square off your shoulders and help lift your torso. You’ll look more elongated!

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” Robert Brault

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and it’s time for kids to go back to school. Below is a school checklist that will get you organized and ready to send your kids back to school. School Supply Shopping Don’t put off shopping until the last minute. Take a look at the list of supplies needed and stockpile items over the summer so you don’t have a huge expense right before school starts. Backpacks or book bags are a reflection of your child’s personality, so shop early to get the best selection! If you have a pre-schooler or kindergartner, you may also consider purchasing a nap mat to make rest time more pleasant.

School Clothes Preparing for school can take a big bite out of your budget, especially if you have multiple kids entering school in the fall. To make your budget dollars go further, purchase five pants or skirts and five mix and match tops.

Car Seats If your child is graduating from kindergarten to first grade, it may be time to upgrade your current car seat to a less cumbersome one that will recognize your child’s passage from pre-schooler to school-aged.

Uniforms If your child plays sports, does JROTC, dances, cheers or participates in another activity that requires a uniform, don’t forget to order their gear. These can take several weeks to arrive, so don’t wait!

Instruments If your child plans to participate in band or

om by.c a B osh ishP

t s i L k c e h C orchestra, check out the local music store early for the best variety of rental instruments.

Lunches and Snacks If you pack lunches or snacks for your kids, a hip lunch bag will make lunchtime cool! Lunch bags come in many different themes, designs and colors, so let your kids have fun picking one that suits their personality. Save time by preparing healthy snacks and lunches the night before, leave them in the fridge labeled with the kids names so in the morning you can just grab and go.

School and Sports Physicals Many sports teams and schools require children to get a checkup before school starts. Schedule your appointment early so you don’t get caught in the last minute rush, especially if your child needs immunizations.

Bus Routes If your child busses to and from school, take them on the route and walk through the process of where to catch the bus and where they will be dropped off. If this is a new experience for your child, explain how many stops will be made and how to know the correct stop when coming home. If you have the opportunity before the first day of school, introduce your child to the bus drivers so they will be a familiar face.

Class List If you are able to obtain a class list, invite other kids over for playdates so they have friends

before school actually starts. This will make transitioning to school easier for kids who are starting school or are going to a new school.

Locker and Class Assignments Don’t miss the opportunity to go with your child to pick up his locker and class assignments. Take time to walk the halls to help them become familiar with their new class schedule and find any shortcuts when navigating the halls. Getting kids ready for school can be a challenge, but having all of the essentials taken care of before the end of summer can be a huge stress reliever. Be the cool mom on the block and make going back to school a fun time that the kids will look forward to!

Our family vacations over the last few summers have often included a beach visit. On the beach is a tent where you can make souvenir sand molds to take home. It is something that we just can’t resist! We have made starfish, whales, our feet, lizards and all sorts of fun creations.

Make

Sand Molds By Holly, kidsactivitiesblog.com

at Home

Make Sand Molds The first thing I did was to get a bucket full of sand. I then mixed in cooking oil. I used 1 part cooking oil for every 10 parts of sand. For us, that was about 10 cups of sand and 1 cup of oil. When it was mixed, it felt like the sand was a little wet and when pressed it would hold the pressed shape. We then pushed something into the sand to create a sand mold. I made the starfish with a traditional sand mold, Rhett made a whale with another one and Reid wanted to make a flying dragon with a toy dragon.

Make Sand Casts with Plaster of Paris The next step was to decorate the sand molds with shells or other small accessories. We used some shells that we had and a bag of small mirrors. The trick is to place the 24 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

item pretty-side down and gently push it into the sand. Using the end of a pen or pencil works great for this. Once the decorating is over, make sure the lip of the mold is level. Add more sand to certain areas if necessary. I mixed up a small batch of plaster of Paris according to the directions on the package. Please read the package directions because they may lead you to do this part without the assistance of your kids depending on their age and crafting skill level. We then poured the plaster mixture into the molds and let them set for one to two hours. If you are going to add a hanger, do it after about 15 minutes. We then lifted them out and brushed them off with a kitchen brush. I recommend doing this outside because the sand will fly!

Our sand molds cost a fraction to make at home than making just one does on vacation. Although my kitchen doesn’t have an ocean breeze, it was a really fun summer project to do with the kids!

Homemade

Games Send Your Little Pirates on a Treasure Hunt Your children love family game night, but they’re growing bored of the same ol’ board games. Instead of spending money on something new, create a new game right at home!

Number of Players: 3 or more Directions: Decorate a large cardboard box with construction paper, markers, feathers, ribbon and anything else you’ve got laying around the house. This will serve as the “Treasure Chest.”

Hide the treasure around the house, then let the hunt begin! The participant who finds the most treasure is the winner. Create a scorecard if you want to play multiple rounds or divide the family up into teams to let members work together. Dress the kids in pirate garb complete with eye patches and bandanas to enhance the adventure. If you have some old eye makeup, you can use it to draw mustaches, goatees and beards.

Fill the chest with an assortment of treasure, such as fake jewelry, plastic coins, paper money, belts, shoes and toys. Note each item on a treasure hunt list.

Kids need a little help? Give clues along the way, or better yet, draw a map! With a little imagination, the possibilities for fun are endless.

the (Not So)

Terrible By Kat Freestone

Twos Rest assured, this wild behavior is perfectly normal. The so-called “terrible twos” is a developmental stage in a child’s life that can occur anywhere from the age of one to three, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Though it can feel overwhelming, this is a momentous period in your child’s life. It’s a time where she has desires, but has not yet learned reason. It’s also a time where instant gratification is

You have a madwoman in your house: Your toddler is all smiles one minute, and the next she’s screaming and kicking on the ground. Despite all your efforts, you just can’t seem to understand the cause of these tantrums, nor what you can do to stop them. “Is there something wrong with my child?” you wonder to yourself. all she knows; if she sees a stuffed toy, she wants it now. This inability to delay gratification makes toddlers easily frustrated and often leads to tantrums. As parents, it’s essential that you set boundaries in order to overcome this butting of heads. So how do you stop tantrums before they start? Here are a few helpful strategies to keep in mind:

Follow a schedule. Routines are comfortable and predictable, and they will help your child feel like she has some control over her world.

Make your child’s environment play-friendly. Instead of leaving shiny glass objects around that she will be tempted to touch, (which will inevitably lead to many “no’s” and more frustration), give her a play space that’s completely open to exploration.

Give your toddler a choice, especially with little things. This will make her feel empowered. Instead of saying, “You have to eat now,” try asking, “Do you want crackers, or grapes?” 26 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

Keep her occupied. Bored little hands can end up in dangerous places. Instead, find new and safe objects to absorb her attention. Things like spoons, blankets and plastic lids are some great examples.

Be there for her. If a tantrum arises, sometimes the best thing a parent can do is give a hug and help their toddler calm down. When children become out of control, they often want to be held.

At the end of the day, these really are the not-so-terrible twos. Your child is learning and growing and still depends on Mom and Dad for love, warmth and support. Raising a toddler can certainly take time and energy, but there’s nothing more wonderful than watching your child grow.

Chore Galore! By Sarah Mason

Chores help children develop a sense of responsibility and make them feel like they’re contributing to the family; even toddlers can help with small duties around the house. Now that school’s back in session, here are a few age-appropriate chores to get your kids helping:

Two, three and four year olds can put dirty clothes in the laundry basket, clean up their toys, sort socks in the laundry, place napkins on the dinner table, fill the pet bowl with food, put shoes by the door, and unpack notebooks from their backpacks.

their rooms, put clothes away in drawers, set the dinner table and empty their school lunchbox.

Eight and nine year olds can help cook dinner, load the dishwasher, take out the garbage, prepare after-school snacks, start their homework and help pack tomorrow’s lunch.

Ten year olds and older

Five, six and seven year olds

can do all of the above, and in addition they can fold laundry, vacuum, wash the dog, help with yard work, help younger siblings get ready for school, sweep the porch, dust and take the dog for a walk.

How to deal with rowdy neighborhood kids. You don’t want to be labeled as a complainer, but lately your neighbors’ kids have been testing your nerves. They run through your flowers, ride their bikes in your driveway and throw that ball a little too close for comfort. Not to mention, they’re noisy! So what’s an annoyed homeowner to do? Kids will be kids. Just because they’re bothering you doesn’t mean you should put a stop to their play. If daytime noise disrupts your quiet time, make changes on your end to resolve the issue. Play music, close your windows or take a trip to the bookstore for some R&R. If noise levels cause you harm – say, you work nights and need to sleep during the day – a gentle conversation with the parents may be appropriate. Your neighbors don’t mean to disturb you, after all. If this approach doesn’t work, consider investing in a comfortable pair of ear plugs to help you get some shuteye. Of course, noise isn’t the only issue rowdy 28 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

Can I Have By Sarah G. Mason

My Ball Back?

neighborhood kids cause. Damaged property is a more serious problem, and if children are responsible for a broken window or dinged car, it’s time to speak up. Though you can technically sue older children for the cost of damage, we wouldn’t recommend that route. It’s better to approach the parents and see if you can work something out. Suggest splitting the cost, or call it even by having the kids rake your yard once a week for a month. If the child’s parents won’t cooperate, you may need to consider taking legal action against them. In most cases, however, homeowners choose to repair the damage themselves, understanding that broken belongings are a part of life. Whether or not you know who caused damage to your property, this is a good opportunity to ask children to stay out of your yard. You have the right to stop

trespassing, especially if the kids aren’t respecting your property. As always, it’s best to approach the situation with kindness. Explain to the kids that you just planted those flowers and you’d really hate to see them trampled. Talk to the parents about how someone recently broke your fence and you’d like to avoid any more incidents. By approaching the issue in an open, reasonable manner, you’re more likely to gain the support of your neighbors. It’s easy to get hung up on the bad, but just remember all the good; Living in a neighborhood comes with the benefits of a support system of other homeowners, a group of people to keep an eye on your property and a lovely place to call home. Though not all neighborhood kids are peaceful, focus on the positive – they’re in school most days and they won’t be kids forever!

Prevent Swimmer’s Ear with This Easy Home Remedy NOTE: This remedy should not be used without first consulting a doctor if you have ever had a punctured ear drum. It should also not be used in those who have ear tubes, damaged ear drums or ear drainage. • Combine 1 part rubbing alcohol with 1 part white vinegar. • Pour the solution into a sterile bottle. • W hile lying down or holding the head to the side, place 5 drops of the liquid into the ear. • After 3-4 minutes, turn the head so that the liquid drains. • Dry the outer ear with a soft towel. This remedy can be used both before and after exposure to water to help ensure the ear canal stays clean, dry, and healthy.

Swimmer’sEar Preventing and Treating

Nothing can end a day of fun in the water like a painful swimmer’s ear. Swimmer’s ear is caused by bacteria that grows in the warm, moist ear canal and often occurs during warm months after a day at the pool or beach. However, swimmer’s ear can occur anytime, anywhere, since frequent swimming or water exposure – including showers and baths – washes ear wax away and leaves the ear canal vulnerable. It’s been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. By taking just a few preventative steps, you can greatly reduce you and your children’s chances of getting swimmer’s ear this season.

Stay Away from Suspicious Water If you’re planning to swim in an open body of water – a lake, pond or the ocean – note the overall health of the area. Does the water seem clear or murky? Are there any unusual smells? Natural bodies of water can sometimes harbor bacteria that can cause 30 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

swimmer’s ear, so be sure that the area is clean before you dive in.

If you and the kiddos are swimming in a pool or hot tub, check with the owner or pool manager to ensure that the pool has been properly maintained. Look for algae’s telltale greenish hue, and if you see it, proceed with caution. If you become worried about the safety of the water after you’ve already been submerged, rinse your ears with clean water after swimming.

Keep the Ear Canal Dry Bacteria and algae that make it to the ear canal need moisture to survive. Therefore, keeping the ear canal dry is the best defense. However, be sure that you care for the ear canal gently. Never push anything into your or your children’s ear canals to dry them, as this can lead to scratches and injury that invite more bacteria to grow.

Instead, turn your head so that your ear faces the ground, and allow the water to drain. After the water has drained, dry the outer ear with a soft towel.

Treat Symptoms Promptly The first sign of swimmer’s ear is usually a tingling or itching sensation inside the ear canal. While you will no doubt be tempted to scratch, avoid putting anything (even a finger) into the ear canal, and instruct your children to do the same. Instead, treat the itch by using an over-the-counter remedy or the homemade solution to dry the ear and kill the bacteria or algae before it can cause infection. If you or your kids find that the itching turns to pain, it’s time to consult a doctor. He or she can give the proper advice and prescribe the proper treatment to cure the infection and heal the ear canal. Be sure to avoid water during the treatment period and keep ears covered with a cap when bathing or showering.

Summer By Ginger Henderson

Between soccer practice, swimming lessons and afternoon complaints of “I’m bored,” romantic interludes can quickly turn into another chore on your to-do list. When summer schedules bog you down, try the following tips to help fan the heat.

At Home Nothing dirties a home faster than kids home on summer vacation. Whether you’re home with your children during the day or reunite with them after work hours, the increased workload can seem overwhelming. To manage, consider instituting a “summer work schedule.” From 6pm to 7pm each night, gather the family and spend some time doing household chores – think laundry, cooking and cleaning. At 7pm sharp, “clock out.” Let any unfinished work wait for the next day and spend the rest of your evening connecting with your partner.

you in too many directions, look to your partner for support. If you’re tied up running the kids back and forth to activities, have your partner handle dinner. While you’re stuck waiting for practice to end, take advantage of the “alone” time to connect with your spouse via text. Be a little daring and send your partner a steamy text message. That way, when you get home, you’ll both be on exactly the same page.

On Vacation Family vacations are a wonderful time for the entire family to bond. However, they can also be very stressful. To combat snappy tones and standoffish attitudes, plan your days before you leave home. Schedule time for the entire family to be together, time for each parent to enjoy an activity with the children individually, and time for the parents to enjoy each other. Even if a candle lit dinner for two is out of the question, you can enjoy dinner for two on the patio or balcony while your children play quietly inside.

Put Meat in a Separate Bin If you already store meat down low in your fridge to prevent an all-out catastrophe should leakage occur, congrats – you’re one step ahead of the game! Now, let’s take things a tad further. Even if you aren’t germ-phobic, you can save yourself time, hassle, money (and illness!) by making this one simple change.

Add a clear plastic bin in your refrigerator dedicated solely to meat. Bacon, ground beef, chicken, sausage packets, fish…yup, into the bin! By keeping raw meat separate from other parts of your refrigerator, you’ll ensure that cleanup is a breeze should anything go awry. Not to mention, it’s a ready-made organizer!

The Skinny on...

Spaghetti Squash By Danielle Boudreau The spaghetti squash is often overlooked. Uncooked, it looks the same as any other of its squash kin. But cook it and you have a delicious, healthy pasta dish made of the vegetable alone. How, you ask? When you cook spaghetti squash, its flesh becomes stringy and is extracted from the vegetable like strands of spaghetti. Pair it with your favorite pasta sauce and mix-ins or make a delicious casserole. Your kids will hardly know the difference! Below is my favorite spaghetti squash home recipe that is a must-try.

Spaghetti Squash & Jalapeño Casserole Recipe Serves: About 7 Prep Time: 45 minutes | Cook Time: 20 minutes Ingredients: • 1 2.5lb. spaghetti squash, cut in half and seeded • 11/2 cup 1% milk • 1/4 cup light cream • 2 cloves minced garlic • 1/2 shallot, finely chopped • 1 tbsp. butter

• 1 jalapeño, chopped and seeded • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese • 1/3 cup bread crumbs • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions: 1) Grease a 2 to 3 quart baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. 2) Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place spaghetti squash flesh side down in a glass baking dish. Fill the dish up half way with water. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until squash is soft to the touch. Let cool. 3) When squash has cooled, use a fork to remove the spaghetti like strands. Place in a large mixing bowl. 4) Meanwhile, heat butter in a medium size pan over medium high heat. Add shallots and garlic and cook until translucent, about 4 minutes. Remove from heat.

34 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

5) In another large saucepan, heat milk, cream and chopped jalapeños in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Let simmer for 5 minutes, or until mixture is fragrant and thickening. Add in spaghetti squash and shallots and garlic, mix well to cover in the milk mixture. Add salt and pepper. Let cook another 2 to 3 minutes. Then, add cheese, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring well to mix. 6) Pour spaghetti squash mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the top with bread crumbs, jalapeños and salt and pepper. Reduce heat to 350 and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until bubbly and top is goldenbrown.

Q. I am a 21-year-old female and swear I have a male libido. Most guys would find that desirable, but, of course, I had to fall madly in love with a guy who has a low libido. Every time I let him know I’m in the mood, he pushes me away or groans, like “Not again!” I feel like I’m constantly annoying him! I also can’t help but feel that I’m unattractive or unwanted. We get into fights frequently, and I feel like I’m the cause even though I can’t help it. I get so frustrated at him and at myself. I just wish my sex drive were gone! I don’t want to take pills, but I have heard sodas and licorice lower sex drive. I’m cramming in as much of that as I can, but is there anything else? A. Please stop overdosing on licorice and soda! Although it is true that natural licorice containing the ingredient glycyrrhizin can lower libido, it has many other effects on the body. Too much of this compound can deplete the body of potassium, raise blood pressure, lead to fluid retention and disrupt hormone balance. Other complications include changes in heart rhythm, muscle damage, fatigue and weakness. We hope you can encourage your partner to engage in couples counseling. That would be a far healthier way to deal with the frustration you are going through. Sex counseling also might be beneficial. The

Is there any truth to the theory that taking 2 teaspoons of red-wine vinegar at lunch and again at dinner reduces blood sugar? Do you have any suggestions for controlling blood sugar? My doctor says I have prediabetes. A. There is some evidence that adding vinegar to a high-carbohydrate meal can help moderate the resulting rise in blood sugar (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, July 2010). Adding a vinaigrette dressing to salad at the end of the meal, as the French do, might be an easy way to accomplish this. Other strategies include avoiding highly processed carbs and sugar while increasing intake of vegetables and nuts. Supplements such as vitamin D and selenium, fenugreek, bitter melon and nopal cactus also may be helpful. Genetically modified organisms are a hot button issue for many Americans today. If you’re still in the dark about GMOs, read on for a brief explanation to help you better understand the concerns surrounding American’s consumption.

What’s the

Big Deal about By Ginger Henderson

GMO’s?

What are GMOs?

Are GMOs safe?

GMOs are foods that have been changed from their natural forms. These changes are made through gene-splitting – changing the DNA of the plant. While GMOs have only recently become a hot topic, Americans have actually been consuming foods with GMOs for twenty years. This biotechnical engineering is mainly done to help increase a crop’s resistance to pesticide. The initial theory was that if the plants could better withstand the application of pesticides, the crop would thrive while the weeds were killed, thus resulting in larger crop yields. The problem occurred when weeds began building more resistance to pesticides as well, resulting in what have been dubbed “superweeds,” which now require even more pesticides to control.

This is the heart of the GMO debate. This technology (even though it’s been used for two decades) is still very new, and we haven’t had the time to fully study the implications of its use. It is for this reason that GMO critics are calling for stringent food labeling laws; they want foods made with GMOs to be labeled as such. Their opposition – food manufacturers – argue that GMO labeling will only confuse consumers, breed fear and hurt sales. And so, the debate continues.

36 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

What foods have GMOs? GMOs are most commonly found in corn, soybean, canola and cotton crops. This may not seem like much, but it actually covers

more food products than you think. Corn, for instance, can be found in just about everything, from oils to cereal.

How can I avoid GMOs? While avoiding all GMOs can be tricky, some consumers are turning to organic products as a way to reduce their GMO consumption. Produce and meats that are certified organic must be free of GMOs. The certified organic label tells the consumers that the crop has not been grown with GMO seeds or the animal was not fed with GMO crops. For food products (things such as crackers or bread), make sure that the packaging states “100 percent organic,” not just “organic” or “made with organic ingredients” to be sure you’re avoiding GMOs in all ingredients.

A Quick Core

Workout

You Can Do Right Now!

All you’ll need for this extreme core workout is a yoga block, small ball, stuffed animal or anything else you can easily hold between your feet. Lie face up with your arms extended straight behind

your head, holding the yoga block or object of your choice. Curl up and reach your arms toward your toes as you bend your knees – think of contracting your abdominal muscles in a “crunch with your feet in the air. Place the block between your feet.

Holding the block with your feet, lower your body back down; extend your arms behind your head and your legs forward. Don’t let your hands or feet touch the ground! Repeat the movement, this time passing the block from your feet back to your hands. Do three sets of 10 reps to feel the burn!

Why We Want

What We Want By Sarah G. Mason

Our consciousness is an extraordinary thing. It’s what separates us from other species and enables us to not only make choices, but feel aware of them. However, this awareness has led to desires that reach beyond our instincts. Primally, we desire food, water and shelter. So what makes us want money, an iPhone and jewelry? Whether or not these things serve any survival purposes has become irrelevant; we want things.

It works like this: Instinctually, we desire objects that serve a purpose. No one wants a fork when they’re eating soup. Our ability to imagine a result leads to wants; we want electricity to have light, so that we can read, so that we can learn, so that we can work, so that we can make money, so that we can buy electricity. Most people equate an object’s worth with its purpose.

It feels like this: When we’re cold, we desire a sweater. When we’re hot, we desire water. We need these things to survive. However, we also desire a television, a good book and a fast car. Why is that? Feelings aren’t just physical, they’re emotional too. The prospect of sensual and entertainment value can make 38 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

an object – like that new DVD player – highly desirable. They won’t help us survive, but they’ll make us happy, so we want them.

It looks like this: Beauty is part of our culture, and we like beautiful things. We will choose the pretty shirt over the ugly one, though their functions are the same. Over time, our desires for beauty have evolved from the useful to the purposeless. A great painting is beautiful and therefore desirable, though it serves no real purpose.

It rates like this: Why do we choose the name brand over the generic? Their ingredients may be the same, their functions might be identical, but we still prefer one over the other. Here,

instead of being attracted to the usefulness of an object, we’re attracted to its perceived value. Cost, authenticity and rarity are all things that don’t affect an objects performance, but we want them anyway. Our opinions are influenced by popular opinion and make us desire the desirable.

It’s interesting to think about where our wants began – with food, water and shelter – and how they’ve evolved – to big houses, designer clothes and new gadgets. As we continue to grow, our standard of living evolves and one thing remains the same: we want what we want. “Love is friendship set on fire.” Jeremy Taylor

Budget Living On A

By Kimberlee Stokes

The Food Trap What is the one area of the budget that can expand like a diaper in a swimming pool? Food. Don’t get me wrong, eating is one of my top priorities and I am absolutely not telling you to stop eating. What I will tell you is that we look at food differently in our home: There is necessity food and entertainment food.

Necessity Food What our bodies need to function properly each day: 1) Some form of protein 2) Some vegetables 3) Some fruit 4) A little grain 5) A little fat For the sake of discussion, I will boil it down to these simple elements. The amount we need is determined by our activity level and metabolism. “I criticize by creation - not by finding fault.” Cicero

Entertainment Food Food we like to eat, but we don’t need: 1) The 10:00 a.m. coffee break doughnut 2) The 10:00 p.m. TV watching munchies 3) The midafternoon “Mom, I’m bored. What’s in the fridge?” search 4) Popcorn at the theater 5) Friday night pizza delivery 6) Saturday night dinner out 7) Dessert If our family has any confusion on the difference between necessity food and entertainment food, we either eat a lot of potatoes for the next week or something doesn’t get paid. Friday night pizza delivery sounds wonderful after a busy week, but not so wonderful on Monday morning when the power bill is due.

In our house, we buy necessity food first Because we have decided that we don’t want to trade something temporary (food) for something eternal (my ability to stay

home and raise our children). For our family, spending too much on entertainment food means I have to get a job. Having said that, you should know that we do not sit around at home eating beans and rice (although we do occasionally eat beans and rice). I plan my meals around the sale items each week and we enjoy delicious food like steak fajitas, BBQ pork, garlic shrimp radiatore and ranch chicken casserole. My husband and I have a weekly date night, we just don’t eat dinner out very often. If ice cream is on sale we may have dessert that week, but it comes out of entertainment money (leftover after we put aside bill money), not the grocery budget. If we receive birthday money and we have a Living Social discount, we may go out to eat as a family. Eating out and having dessert are not the norm, however. If eating out is an important part of your life, please continue to do so. Just make sure that you can actually afford it and make the choice consciously. Realize that by “eating” that money you can’t spend it on something else. Kimberlee is a happily married mom to four teens ages 13-18 and an avid fan of happiness! Crisis

How to Avoid Turning Their Crisis into Your Own Do not resist the situation. It’s easy to try and fight a high-stress situation. Being stuck in an ER for hours or losing your cell connection mid-crisis can test anyone’s patience, but the more reactive you are, the more stress you will pass to others. It is your duty to stay calm, clear and assertive during a traumatic event. If you begin to feel the strain, try whispering. This will prevent you from screeching above the chaos, which can raise both your heart rate and your blood pressure and make you feel the panic from within. Plus, whispering forces others to lean in and pay attention, so what you’re saying will be heard.

Take a break. Even if you’ve given your heartbroken friend who recently lost her husband full permission to call at any hour of the night, it doesn’t 40 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

In every crisis, there are two types of people: The hurt and the help. If you’ve ever been on the helping side, you know how difficult it can be to support an upset friend or family member without experiencing a full-blown meltdown yourself. Next time you’re soothing a distressed loved one, think of these tips to help bring a little ease to those difficult times.

mean that you have to sit by the phone worrying and waiting. Put the ringer to silent, make yourself a real meal and take a bath to de-stress. If you miss her call, you will call her back – refreshed and ready to support.

conscious about your wellbeing. Throw a salad together in the morning, take a shower break or splurge at the juice bar when you’re out of time.

Don’t neglect your own health.

From anyone. Ask and ask and ask, and take every offer that comes your way. This is not the time to play superhero, this is the time to solve problems quickly and efficiently. Does the nurse offer to get a blanket? Yes please. Does your spouse suggest picking up the kids? Yes and thank you. Do you need someone to drop off your computer charger? Ask your coworker, neighbor or a close family friend if they have the time to do it. Don’t think that you’re inconveniencing others. If they can’t help, they’ll simply say so, but those who can support you will make it that much easier to help your loved one in need.

If you’re caring for a parent in the hospital or stepping in for a coworker who left the company high and dry, your body will undoubtedly feel the strain. Late nights, early mornings and a heavy workload may push self-care out of your mind, but don’t neglect your health. You need to stay sharp now more than ever, so do what you can to eat three square meals a day, drink plenty of water and don’t skimp on basic hygiene or sleep. Instead of skipping meals and then grabbing a pizza slice in the hospital cafeteria, get your nutrition by staying

Bottle It Up Don’t

By Sarah G. Mason

Have you ever been so angry that you wanted to scream, but instead you held it in? According to research from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of California San Francisco, it’s time to stop bottling that anger up. In a joint study published in the journal PLOS ONE, participates were asked to complete a difficult math task while being watched by “evaluators” who had been trained to give negative feedback. The negative feedback was specifically designed to make some participants feel angry and other shameful. At the end of the task, the participants were given one of two questionnaires: one that asked about their feelings with questions like, “How angry are you right now?” and one that didn’t ask any questions about emotions.

Those who were prodded into anger and who also completed the emotional assessment questionnaire had different physiological heart rate responses than those who were angry but simply answered neutral questions. The participants who were able to express their anger during the questionnaire had a

more even heart rate – and less of a temper – than those who weren’t able to discuss their emotions after the test.

So what does this all mean? As the study explains, when an angry person is asked how they’re feeling, the simple act of talking about it actually calms them down, not just mentally, but physically as well. The heart rate – a telltale sign of anger – responds significantly to venting, which explains something we’ve all experienced – holding in anger can sour your mood, while letting it out provides quick relief. The takeaway is an important one. Stress and anger are not feelings anyone should have to live with for long. If you often feel unhappy, ask yourself, “Am I holding something in?” By discussing your feelings with a friend or relative, even without solving the issue, you can significantly improve your wellbeing. On the flip side, if you have a friend or loved one who feels angry, let them vent to you – it may be exactly what they need.

Control Freak How to deal with the

own. Gradually remind the controller over days, weeks or even months of your own wishes and desires. Always remember that you have the ability to redefine the terms of your relationship and to create a healthier environment.

in your life

By: Katie M. Moss

Do you feel like someone close to you is a control freak?

What's funny about controllers is that they usually feel out of control themselves, which leads to a desire to control others. These people are afraid of falling apart, so they micromanage others to keep the focus off of themselves. Perhaps the controller you know experienced abandonment when they were a child or recently lost their job, causing them to mask their insecurities by asserting power over others. 42 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

When talking to the control freak in your life, set limits. If it seems like the controller always has a direction for you to go in or a decision for you to make, tell them kindly that you value their opinion but that you would like to state yours as well. If they don’t realize they’re taking over the conversation, this could help.

Does he or she always claim to know Have you tried your what’s best for you, and must you best, but the control always do things their way? Perhaps freak in your life just you even feel like you can’t live your won’t let up? Perhaps own life because you’re a prisoner it’s time for some outside to their sense of order. If so, it’s help. Depending on who time for you to deal with the the controller is in your life, control freak in your life. the two of you may benefit from a joint discussion with a third party, such as a counselor, friend, parent or your company’s HR department. You deserve to work and live in a place that isn’t toxic to your emotional and mental health, so explore that possibility in a safe environment where you can make your feelings known.

So what's the secret to controlling a controller? Simple – you don’t. Telling a controller what to do will only make them lash out. Instead, approach your needs in a healthy and assertive way. Make sure you have a targeted approach and don't go looking for a fight. Remind them that you can make your own decisions and that – while you appreciate their advice – there are some things you’d rather tackle on your

Most importantly, don't believe that your self-worth is dependent on the controller. You can't please everyone, no matter what you do. The key to dealing with a control freak is to deal with them mindfully. It's important for your own mental and emotional health to free yourself from the manipulation. Understanding what motivates the controller and how they operate will help you choose the healthiest interaction.

Toss It? We’ve all got old bills, bank statements and paystubs we’re holding onto “just in case,” but how long should you really keep old onto for documents? Hold several years: Hold onto for no longer than 1 year: Monthly utility bills, phone bills, cable bills, credit card statements, medical bills, monthly account statements, bank statements and paystubs. Exceptions: There may be a few “buts” here. For instance, if there’s a deductible purchase on a credit card statement, hold onto it for your next tax return.

Tax returns, year-end account statements, retirement plan statements, home-related documents like home improvement records and insurance policies.

Hold onto indefinitely: Loan paperwork, birth certificates, adoption records, death certificates, marriage and divorce records, wills, military records, social security cards, passports, and appraisals for property.

Seize Science theSays Day So

by Sarah mason

You only live once. Seize the day. Live like there’s no tomorrow. You can’t take it with you. According to research led by Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School published in the Journal of Mathematical After studying data on income and longevity of Economics, these clichés may actually individuals between the hold real economic wisdom. ages of 20 and 100, We look at saving as an essential investment, hard work as a virtue and planning ahead as a must. But what happens when things don’t go – well – according to plan? Professor Marc Fleurbaey and his collaborators asked, “What happens when you die young? What economic inequality exists between those who live long lives and those who die too soon?” The result of their study was this: some people might want to spend more and work less early on in life, just in case their time runs out. But these educated researches can’t really be advising us to throw all caution to the wind and live from day to day, right? Luckily, economics is mostly theory, so it’s not time to quit your day job just yet. Still, the study provides an interesting insight into the economic setbacks of an early death. 34 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

researchers found that short lives result in big losses, even between different socio-economic groups. Under the assumption that each individual lived the same amount of time, the researchers found that those with the lowest income are (unsurprisingly) the worst off in terms of financial losses -- for instance, Frank who makes 30 percent less than Cindy. However, even across different levels of income, those who die at age 55 lose an average of 40 percent of income compared to those who live until age 85 – in our scenario, this would mean that Cindy, who dies at 55 years of age, loses 40 percent of income compared to Frank, who lives all the way until he’s 85, even though Frank makes 30 percent less than Cindy. According to Fleurbaey, the only way to reduce inequalities between the short-lived and long-lived is to have

everyone spend a little more and work a little less early in life. That way, for the unlucky ones who die early, things aren’t as bad as it would be if they had planned to enjoy more consumption and leisure later. Still, there are questions unanswered. Most of us don’t plan on dying young, after all, so what happens when we actually make it to 100? Won’t we wish we’d saved more? The researchers don’t argue that savings are important – they are. However, they claim that the usual concern about under-saving may be partly assuaged by considering the problems that come with an early death – mainly, not being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor. On an individual level, you might be better off if you consumed more earlier in life. Source: Science Daily

Could It Be

Celiac? By Ginger Henderson “My tummy hurts.” As a mom, you’ve likely heard this complaint more times than you can remember. Stomachaches can be triggered by all kinds of things, including hunger, anxiety and viral infections. For most ailments, a few days’ rest, a snack or a relaxing activity can ease tummy troubles. If you’re like me, though, your child’s persistent stomach pain can leave you scratching your head as to the cause. My son’s complaints first began when he was seven. A nagging discomfort in his belly disrupted his sleep and caused him distress during the day. I treated what I thought was heartburn with OTC remedies until the discomfort turned to pain. After visiting the 24 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

pediatrician and getting a prescription acid reducer, I was sure relief was close on the horizon. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

this psychiatrist who finally put all the pieces together. “Do you think he has a problem with gluten?” the doctor asked. “Gluten?” I said. “The stuff in bread? What’s that got to do with it?” As it turns out, gluten had everything to do with it. After this visit, I returned with my son to the pediatrician and asked that he be tested for celiac disease. A few vials of blood later, we had our answer – positive.

As the weeks wore on, the problem became worse. Eventually my son was sleeping sitting almost upright, the pain of reflux when lying down too much to bear. Even several prescriptions later, there was no change. Soon, he began to battle nausea daily. Eventually he stopped eating altogether, the sick feeling in his stomach too strong to allow him to swallow.

Celiac disease, despite what people think, is not an allergy. It is an autoimmune disease, much like lupus or diabetes. In celiac disease, the body produces antibodies that destroy its own tissue. When the gluten my son was eating was broken down in his digestive system, his antibodies went on alert. The antibodies see the gluten proteins as a dangerous, foreign substance and go on attack, essentially destroying the small intestine.

After many unsuccessful visits with the pediatrician, I reached out to a psychiatrist for help. Since we couldn’t find anything physically wrong with his body, maybe the problem was in his head, I reasoned. It was

Luckily we found the source of my son’s problem in time. Many aren’t so lucky and end up hospitalized due to malnutrition, dehydration or a host of other illnesses. Once we eliminated gluten from my son’s

diet, his symptoms began to disappear, and within a month’s time he was eating again. Soon he was on the path to a healthy weight. Living a gluten-free lifestyle is challenging at times, but luckily things are beginning to get easier. Many food companies have sprung up to cater to those with specific dietary needs such as ours. While many restaurants are also now offering gluten-free options, it’s important to remember the dangers of cross-contamination. Even though a food is gluten-free, care must be taken to ensure that it has not crossed paths with any other food or products containing gluten.

esson Common L Symptoms that may Indicate Celiac Disease

• Mouth sores • Raised, itchy rash (Dermatitis herpetiformis) • Depression • Anxiety • Iron deficiency • Bone or joint pain • Hair loss • Loss of dental enamel

One of the things that surprised us the most when going glutenfree was the amount of gluten in non-food products. People with celiac disease must check labels on everything – even things like shampoo, bandages, lotions and toothpaste. For many, as with my son, these gluten-containing products can cause a reaction even when not ingested. So how do you know if your child is suffering from a run-ofthe-mill stomachache or if it’s something more serious? If your child consistently complains for more than a week, it’s time to become proactive. Use our list of most common celiac symptoms to check against your child’s complaints, and mention these things to your pediatrician. “I choose a block of marble and chop off whatever I don’t need.” Francois-Auguste Rodin

Stress Free

Parenting You’re drained from another sleepless night with your newborn, frustrated with your middle schooler who’s failing math and at your wits end with the toddler who decided crayon drawings belonged on the wall. Parenting is supposed to be joyful – so why is it so exhausting?

Raising children is a challenge, no matter how experienced you are. It’s an enormous task that doesn’t come with clear instructions. There will be angry moments, defeated moments and moments where you just want to quit. And yet, parenting doesn’t have to be overwhelming. If you find yourself in a constant state of stress, we offer these five tips:

Take control. It’s easier said than done, but children learn their coping skills by watching how their parents react to hard situations. Stay calm and do whatever you must do to ensure immunity against kids who want to push your buttons. Timeout isn’t just for the naughty toddler’s sake, after all. If you feel your stress levels and frustration quickly escalating, take your child by the hand, 22 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

By Sarah G. Mason

Is it Possible?

guide them gently to a 5 minute timeout, then release your anger into a pillow. Slowly, your child will learn that Mommy and Daddy don’t have tantrums, and neither should they.

Manage your expectations. You may worry about how your kids will turn out – most parents do. And yet, wishing for perfect children is unrealistic and can harm the relationship you do have with your kids. Love them, encourage them and allow them to grow at their own pace. More importantly, have confidence in your kids. When you believe they will succeed, your outlook, tone and connection with them will change and can even help them get there.

Take a break, and don’t feel guilty about it. Raising a family is no easy task, and it’s a 24/7 job. Everyone deserves a vacation. Hire a babysitter to get out of the house, visit a therapist to let your feelings go, or simply call a friend to vent. Sometimes, a quick mental break can help you regain composure.

Distraction is key. It’s easy to lose your temper and yell at the 3-year-old for throwing their cereal at you, but sometimes words don’t work. Instead, redirect their attention. Remove the cereal and avoid a tantrum with a quick walk outside or a discussion about the interesting bird you suddenly noticed on the windowsill. By the time they return to eating, the spark in their “game” will be gone.

Create good moments. Bring peace into your home by spending quality time with the kids playing games, exploring the backyard, taking a drive, making dessert, crafting, washing the dog or shopping for clothes. Build a connection with your children so that the bad moments don’t outnumber the good. Healthy family relationships are built over time with love, care and empathy. Give each child one-onone time, listen to what they have to say and allow your children to grow up in a safe, secure environment. That alone can kick stress out the door.

How Do I Help My

Reluctant

If your child doesn’t enjoy reading, don’t despair! There are things you can do to help encourage reading success and foster a love of the written word. If it seems that your child is “reading avoidant,” try these tips to help turn things around.

Make It an Outing While some kids may not enjoy reading, they do enjoy a trip to the library. Spend a morning or afternoon at the library with your children and show them how to find books on topics they’re interested in. Most libraries have a children’s librarian who can help. Plan to spend an hour or two with your child, allowing them to peruse the books and enjoy reading a few on site.

Set Up a Reading Nook Choose a quiet corner of your home to prepare as a cozy reading nook. Outfit the nook with soft pillows and blankets, and insist that reading is the only activity allowed in this area.

Let Them Choose Children often have restrictions on what they’re allowed to read in school and must forgo the things they’d like to read. While you want to keep your child

Reader? reading on level, let them be the guide. If they find a book they want to read that is too easy for them, let them read it. If it’s too hard, let them try – they might just surprise you! Encourage them to choose a range of books – not all easy and not all hard. And don’t count out magazines and comic books. These two types of literature often have topics that are highly interesting to children, and their vocabulary requires a higher reading skill than fiction. That makes these a great pick for children who are reluctant to pick up a novel or chapter book.

Institute Reading Hour Help your child unwind at the end of the day by instituting reading hour (or half-hour, depending on the age of your child). For the final hour before bedtime, have your child read in bed (or read aloud to them – most children report this as a treasured ritual, even long after they’re able to read alone). Not only will your child gain reading practice, he will also learn how to associate reading with relaxing to help unwind.

that time in your home. However, while guiding us through these sites with their jumble of treasures, Strasser inspires us with the multitude of ways that old pieces from any era and any country can be reinvented and refreshed for new life in a new place. Old chairs may have been stripped of their worn-out stuffing and fabric, but if you like the design of the frame, it is easy to re-stain or paint and reupholster with new fabric that fits the age and style. A great way to add French flair to your home is to look for mantel mirrors, once mounted over Paris apartment fireplaces, found in every style, from Louis XVI to Belle Epoque. The carved details on mirrors and other old frames large and small make these pieces special and worthy of giving new life. Doors can be decorated with panache to revive a style with push plates, decorative handles, keyholes and hinges that have been artfully constructed and are ready to be cleaned up and re-used.

I have always been a flea market junkie. The sidewalk sales, the old curio shops and the demolition sites pull me in wherever I am, at home or on my travels. In her new book, “Paris Flea Market Style,” Claudia Strasser has a beautiful way of getting to the core of why the old and the discarded hold such an important place in our hearts: “We relish finding things of beauty, whether in artwork, lace or an industrial remnant. And we want to have those things close to us in our homes. On tattered tables are memories and precious reminders of what we were and what we are, what we value and what we have lost.”

Market Fix-Ups 18 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

Strasser takes us on a fascinating tour of her favorite flea market haunts in Paris, where she spends days seeking out treasures for her business and herself. From Clignancourt (a maze of 14 different markets that spread out along alleyways) to Vanves (the quintessential French flea market, with loads of eye candy that will fit in your suitcase); from Marche D’Aligre in the heart of Paris (which is set up and broken down each day) to Georges Brassens’ Old Book Market (a covered arcade that overflows with precious leather-bound volumes, mostly in French), there is nothing you can’t find if you take the time to search and discover. This book is for lovers of French decor, whether you have a passion for Napoleon III, Louis XV, Art Deco, Art Nouveau or Moderne and would love to have even a single piece that would re-create the spirit of

On a larger scale, old wardrobes may not be in demand as they once were, with presentday built-in storage, but the magnificent carved doors can be used in inventive ways as wall panels, headboards, tabletops or even on a garden gate. Columns and fragments from old building sites are precious relics that add charm to modern-day entranceways, gardens or interiors. A detailed mantel will transform any room and can surround updated fireplaces with ancient style. Lighting just keeps getting better, but the old-fashioned chandeliers and sconces hold a special place in today’s decor. If you are lucky enough to unearth pendants or chandeliers, sconces or candlesticks, don’t worry about their slightly tattered appearance. These relics can be restrung, cleaned up and rewired, saving the original finery while updating for another life in today’s home. Lampshades are true jewels, but often the fabric has decayed. Use photos of old designs to re-create the look with fabric, beading and fringes. Take a trip to Paris or a bike ride along a nearby country road, and discover some history to add ageless style to your home. HOW TO

Sell Your Home

Fast! by Kat freestone

Start strong online.

Ninety-two percent of home buyers use the Internet to house hunt, and having a strong online presence can stir lots of interest. Post pictures of your home – the more, the better! Additionally, consider creating a video walkthrough of your home where you point out your favorite parts of the interior, exterior and neighborhood.

Take fantastic pictures. Wait for a sunny day and open the blinds to let in beautiful natural light. Shoot straight on as opposed to tilting the camera up or down and turn off your flash; it washes out 16 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

the picture. Use a tripod to reduce blur and take low shots to mimic the ones you see in magazines – your camera should be about 40 inches off the ground. Potential buyers are more attracted to beautiful photos than dark, blurry ones, and they’re more likely to hop in their car and drive to you home if they love what they see online.

Sweeten the deal. Traditionally, sellers offer buyers a couple of thousand dollars credit toward closing costs, a transferable home warranty or the option to close in a short amount of time. If you’re looking for a less traditional way to entice

buyers, leave something valuable behind. Many buyers have come to expect monetary deals, but offering up your plasma screen TV or your golf cart can distinguish your home from others.

Be accessible. Homes that don’t get shown don’t get sold. Make your home accessible by being flexible; don’t restrict potential buyers’ ability to visit by only showing your property during a small time window or by requiring appointments way in advance. If you do, homebuyers may cross you off their list in favor of houses that are easier to see.

Clean the clutter and de-personalize. Pack away all the items that make your home “yours” like family photos, kitschy memorabilia and bold décor. It may seem bare to you, but buyers want to imagine what it will be like living there, which is difficult if your things are everywhere. Similarly, de-clutter by removing all décor but the bare bones and cleaning off countertops and bookshelves.

“We are not retreating - we are advancing in another Direction.” General Douglas MacArthur

Let your neighbors pick their neighbors. Spread the word on your neighborhood message board and email list by sending a link to your home’s online listing. Also, invite your neighbors to your open house – you can even turn it into a block party! This creates opportunities for your neighbors to invite house hunters they know who’ve always wanted to live in the area.

Get your home squeaky clean. Buyers aren’t able to easily look past dirt and grime, so make sure there isn’t any. You may want to hire the pros to do some of the really tough work like steam cleaning the carpets or sweeping the chimney. Then, take extra care to keep things clean during the showing process.

Stage the exterior of your home, too. Buyers like to imagine themselves enjoying time on patios and entertaining guests in the backyard, so stage these areas with outdoor

furniture and immaculate landscaping. Also, it’s important to think seasonally. During the summer, make sure your garden is in beautiful shape, and for autumn, draw attention to the fire pit.

Demonstrate how to use awkward areas. If you have room beneath the stairs or a nook in the hall, find a unique way to show it off. Set up a small work station, a home command center or built-in shelving to make an unusual area a selling point.

Price it right. Today’s buyers are educated and know a good deal from a bad one. Even if you’ve made recent renovations, you’ll do yourself a disservice by pricing your home too far out of line with others in your market. This doesn’t mean your home must be the cheapest, but you should look at comparable homes in your area to decide on a competitive price. With your home in tiptop shape, you’re sure to sell it in no time!

Putting the Right Supply Chain Pieces Together for

Improved

Performance

by michael robinson The Legal Department One such entity is the Legal department. Ask yourself, where is Legal located? Are the attorneys and staff housed in an area made for 15 and you appropriate four lawyers plus two assistants? A one or two person internal consulting team could share the space. Thereby, you have two departments, where one previously existed.

Finance & Accounting Another is Finance & Accounting, including the areas within, e.g., accounts payable, accounts receivable, internal audit, budget, general ledger, etc. Most vendors now offer electronic invoice payment. Implement this procedure and you will realize significant cost savings. Also, consider the location of your audit firm. Are they big (international)? Will a local or in-state firm serve you just as well, minus huge billing hours? Looking at financial performances in the past two quarters or last fiscal year will be revealing. When cost diversification outpaces incremental or slow revenue, you’re going to suffer significant losses in coming quarters. The legal and finance departments provides insight and awareness targeting tax consequences and real estate owned or rented. 12 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

The Purchasing Department The Purchasing department is normally not the first place one looks for vast improvement opportunities. However, because of the widespread influence of purchasing agents and purchasing managers, this area merits more than passing attention. Freight and shipping costs, vendor selection, new software and Return to Vendor (RTV) procedures should be considered. Tracking the transaction costs of procuring goods and services for enterprise-wide and/or standalone entities is part of the focus.

Information Technology Needless to say, Information Technology is company-wide. Every department and individual is affected by I.T. Regardless, you’re asking, “Why look here for cost reduction possibilities?” I suggest we consider how work order fulfillment is accomplished (how many visits, time consumption, customer satisfaction); this and similarities will reveal labor costs. I am not a fan of staff reduction, but some businesses might have an over flow of staff. Software vendors, new software and associated costs should be scrutinized.

Does your business need to reduce costs? Streamline your supply chain? Contact third-party expertise? No matter how you’re planning to improve your business plan, there are a few must-target areas you shouldn’t overlook. An in-depth overview, or more appropriately, a review of these basic areas for improvement, followed with implementation as required can not only greatly enhance the supply chain and increase employee morale, but increase customer satisfaction as well. I’m sure you could name other functions for savings but the above are a few overlooked areas while strategizing. A side benefit of keying in on the basics and involving cross-functions is personnel working together to achieve major company goals. Techniques and new approaches are learned, like compressing time, setting cost containment goals in-house and with suppliers. Analytical tools will be revealed and understood. Multi-tasking may even be fun. Improving some departments and services is an honorable, worthwhile and industrious process. It calls for strategic planning, project management, interpersonal skills and the ability to make tough decisions. Michael W. Robinson has 30 years of experience in supply logistics. “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” Phil Jackson, 11-time NBA Championship coach.

Gainesville High on Togetherness Heading into 2014 Season

“I hear it a lot,” said Fleming, who plays running back. “They say, ‘Oh, y’all are not going to make it to (the) state (finals). Y’all aren’t even going to make the playoffs.’ When I hear that, especially in the halls, it makes me mad. At the same time, I know I’ve got my team with me. “They’re my family. My brothers. I know they’ve got my back and I’ve got theirs 100 percent of the time, no matter what.” During a season-ending 27–7 loss at Springstead in the second round of the playoffs, the Hurricanes were without running back Tony James and receiver Dontarian Evans due to injuries. Latsko said they were “playing our best football of the season” at the tail end of a seven-game winning streak before the injuries took the wind out of the Hurricanes’ attack. Armagost, who’s switching from tight end to left tackle to shore up the offensive line, said this year’s tight-knit group shouldn’t suffer the same fate as the 2013 squad should the injury bug bite again. “We’re going to be forced to come together even more as a family and work together and play together where we’re not relying Story by Mike Capshaw on just GHS seniors having fun during a photo shoot. At top, from left, are Henry Montgomery, Reed Armagost and Ahmad Ivey. At bottom, from left, are Jason Fleming and Krys Young.

Photos by Bonnie Valenzuela During a 15-minute interview with five Gainesville High football players, the word “family” was used 47 times. No kidding. The best part? None of the 47 mentions came across as forced. Often, players hear coaches talking so much about coming together as a family that interview responses seem, well, coached. But GHS seniors Reed Armagost, Jason Fleming, Ahmad Ivey, Henry Montgomery and Krys Young talk about being as close as a family with a sparkle in their eyes and a glimmer of hope for the upcoming season. They say it like they actually mean it and believe it. 10 Flourish Magazine | August/2014

And they better. They’ll need to build an unbreakable bond more than ever. “We don’t have the individual talent that we had last year,“ said second-year coach Mark Latsko, who led his alma mater to a 9–3 record in 2012. “We’re not going to send off six or seven Division I football players this year. We probably have three or four and then a couple of AA and D-II guys, so we need to play together better as a team.” That dip in BCS-level talent has GHS players facing “haters” around town and even in the hallways at school.

Returning three of four starters off last season’s squad, the Hurricanes form a dangerous secondary with seniors, from left, Ahmad Ivey, Henry Montgomery and Krys Young.

“I worship the quicksand he walks in.” Art Buchwald

one or two people,” Armagost said. “Because if one of those guys go down, then we would be stuck. “People think we don’t have the talent to make it back to the state finals like we did two years ago, but I definitely think we can.” Ivey, who’ll double at cornerback and receiver, kept the theme going with his reply to how this team is different than last year’s. “Together. Family,” Ivey said. “We have to be together the whole game. No quarters off. No plays off. We’ve got to play together every play for all four quarters.” One trait of a truly family-like team is when players hang out off the field. The coaching staff holds workouts Monday through Thursday throughout the summer, but several players have been showing up on their own – with no coaches there – on Saturdays. They run “oneon-ones” and other drills to improve skills while also improving chemistry.

“We play for each other more than anybody else,” said Montgomery, a dynamic free safety. “If one man goes down, we’ve got to be there to help him up.” They also play video games like Madden NFL and Call of Duty. One day during the FIFA World Cup, they even played a pick-up soccer game, so it’s not only about football. All of it adds up to a stronger, more cohesive team. Latsko said “there was a little bit of selfishness. It was kind of about ‘me’ to a few players” last season. That’s why this team can achieve better results, regardless of individual talent. “There is no weak link in one chain,” said Young, a cornerback who makes up one of the top secondaries in the state along with Montgomery and Ivey. “If there is any weak links, the chain will break. There’s no breaking us. “We’re one chain that will be stronger than (last season).” One chain. One Family.

Different

Driskel? new GatorS offenSive coordinator Kurt roper’S up-tempo, no-Huddle offenSe iS more Suited to Jeff driSKel’S abilitieS. pHoto courteSy uf communicationS

Something was different about Jeff Driskel at this year’s SEC Media Days. And it wasn’t just the color of his orange and blue tie. It was his demeanor. He seemed more confident. He fired off clear and concise answers with less hesitation than compared to the 2013 SEC Media Days when several “uhhs” and “umms” were uttered in mid-sentence. Sure, it was the redshirt junior’s second trip in as many summers to the annual media circus, so maybe that’s why he was more comfortable in the spotlight. But perhaps Driskel’s more sure of himself in UF’s new offense heading into the Aug. 30 season opener against Idaho in The Swamp. First-year offensive coordinator Kurt Roper has installed an up-tempo, no-huddle offense with Driskel operating primarily out of a shotgun formation. It’s much more suited for Driskel’s size, speed and ability to pass on the run, and resembles the offense former UF coach Urban Meyer recruited the nation’s No. 1 prep quarterback prospect to run. Taking shotgun snaps, Driskel can use every inch of his 6-foot-4, 230-pound frame to eye defenses better than when he was under center. 8

Flourish Magazine | August/2014

“(Driskel) was recruited to be a gun quarterback,” Florida coach Will Muschamp said at media days. “To utilize his athleticism and space, some of the things he’s able to do athletically is going to benefit him and us.” Before hiring Roper, Muschamp evaluated the 2012 offense, comparing statistics from when Driskel was under center to when he was in shotgun. He said “yards were better, explosive plays were better in both the run and pass game,” when Driskel took shotgun snaps. Muschamp used the words “disappointing,” “frustrating,” and difficult,” in describing last season. The Gators finished 4–8 and suffered through a seven-game losing streak after Driskel broke his leg in the third game of the season. “We needed to make some changes on offense,” Muschamp said. “I felt like our kids had lost confidence in some things we were doing offensively.” Driskel’s last play before fracturing his lower leg in the third game of 2013 was an interception returned for a touchdown against Tennessee, a memory that both haunted and motivated him throughout seven months of rehabilitation.

New Offense Helps UF Quarterback Rediscover Confidence

Florida Gators 2014 Schedule Date / Opponent aug. 30 vs. idaho Sept. 6 vs. E. Michigan Sept. 13 vs. Kentucky Sept. 20 @ Alabama oct. 4 @tennessee Oct. 11 vs. LSU oct. 18 vs. missouri Nov. 1 vs. Georgia nov. 8 @ vanderbilt Nov. 15 vs. South Carolina nov. 22 vs. e. Kentucky Nov. 29 @ Florida State

“The season can’t come soon enough,” Driskel told the Orlando Sentinel this summer. “It’s been too long. It’s tough to go out on a pick-six.” Perhaps even more frustrating was the fact Driskel was coming off a three turnover game – including two in the red zone – in a 21–16 loss at Miami. He knows he has plenty to prove to fans – and himself – with more turnovers (15) than touchdown passes (14) thus far in his career. “He would make a lovely corpse.” Charles Dickens

Improved Vandals Hope to Crash UF Opener a somewhat familiar name to Gators fans will be on the opposing sidelines for the aug. 30 season opener in idaho coach paul petrino, the brother of former arkansas coach bobby petrino. paul petrino was the razorbacks’ oensive coordinator before bolting for idaho, where he’s assembled a speedy team that could give the Gators’ young defense ďŹ ts. don’t let the vandals’ 1–11 record from a year ago fool you. they played the season as an independent against some sti competition, including the eventual national champs and seven bowl teams. they join the Sun belt conference this season. “the future looks bright,â€? petrino said after his team’s spring game. “we’re so much faster. our whole team works so much harder. you can hear the hitting. it’s exciting right now – the attitude and the eort.â€? they’re most exciting weapon is senior dezmon epps, who leads a talented receiving corps. and lines up as a kick and punt returner. “When you have a chip on your shoulder, it gives you a little bit more to get back out there, Driskel said. “I just know there’s more to me than I have showed this far in my career. But Driskel needed more than the simple motivation of a season-ending pick-six to rediscover his confidence. He needed Roper’s offense as much as it needs him to be as confident as he was at media days this year. Driskel called the offense the “polar opposite to what he’s ran thus far during his UF career.

“I think the game is just moving towards having to score more points and trying to get as many plays in as possible, which is Coach Roper’s mindset, Driskel said. “He’s a positive coach and puts players in positions to be successful. If Driskel can stay healthy and continue building on that confidence, the Gators can be successful in 2014. They have a chance to build momentum with consecutive home games against Idaho, Eastern Michigan and Kentucky to open the season.

“I’ve just learned about his illness. Let’s hope it’s nothing trivial. Irvin S. Cobb
