Florida summers mean outrageous heat and humidity, and what better solution than a fun week at the beach? Too many trips like these, however, and you’ll be pinching pennies come school time. Beat the heat and the high costs, too, with our tips to ensure a fun-filled vacation guaranteed not to break the bank!

Look Local When you’re living in a state like Florida, who needs remote beaches in Mexico or the Caribbean? Take advantage of the plethora of beaches within reasonable driving range, from Jacksonville and Daytona to Savannah and Hilton Head. Walk and Save Beachfront hotels and homes are often double the price of places a short walk away. Save your money and stay at a location a block or two off the beach. Especially if you’ll spend most of your time on the beach anyway, the beach view from your housing won’t matter very much.

Don’t Rent Sure it’s easier to rent a chair or umbrella from the local shop, but you can save a lot of money by bringing your own supply. Plus, you’ll have it for next year’s trip!

Pack Your Own Food On the topic of supplies, always pack your own food and do grocery shopping before you get to the beach. Grocery stores on islands or beaches often increase their prices, as they know the tourists don’t want to go far to By Kirsten Nielsen find food. As a bonus, you’ll have coolers ready to bring with you to the beach!

Save Money on Your Summer Beach

Vacation

Go Early This applies to both the time of day and the time of year. Parking often fills up fast, so leave early in the day to ensure a spot. If you are looking to take a long vacation, think about the off-season months. Prices are usually cheaper and Florida is often hot enough for the beach year-round!

Claire Damken Brown on three scenarios working women encounter and how to take them on with aplomb Being a mother is an attitude, not a biological relation. Robert A. Heinlien

“Can I please just finish my thought?!” Despite growing in numbers and rising through the ranks, women in male-dominated workspaces still face down gender stereotypes every day. Whether it’s that they’re passive and overly emotional, or that they’re bodies are open for public appraisal, these preconceived and often subconscious notions can keep working women from achieving the recognition that they deserve.

Be Heard! Having children is like living in a frat house - nobody sleeps, everything’s broken, and there’s a lot of throwing up. Ray Romano

Flourish Magazine | June/2015 11

“Are they smirking at me?” For help addressing some of these sticky situations, we turned to workplace diversity and communication expert Claire Damken Brown, founder of Damken Brown and Associates and author of numerous books on gender conflict. We asked her about three specific situations that many women face in the office that might leave them feeling powerless or unheard. Below, she offers her take on each scenario – why it happens, how to address it in the moment and how to prevent it from happening in the future.

“One way to handle this is to pull attention back to yourself by making comments like, ‘Glad you like the idea, let me go back and flesh it out for you.’ It also helps to know going into a meeting that you’re going to be interrupted, so that you’re ready to voice your ideas and get the credit. Some ways to do that are to write down your ideas ahead of time and pass them out or email them to the group ahead of time. Another way is by using what I call the Buddy System – find an ally, man or woman, who will support you when the idea gets picked up by somebody, Situation #1: “Seriously?! I just said that!” ‘Oh, that’s what Sue was saying earlier. Let’s go When you voice an idea or opinion and back to her!’” conversation quickly moves on. Ten minutes later, a male colleague repeats it as his own “When I talk to men and women about this, and suddenly it’s greeted with applause. women think this might be overdoing it. They worry that it’s not playing fair, or that it’s “I don’t think this happens out of purposeful somehow sneaky. But the men, they say they actions – no one is thinking ‘I’m going to steal do this all the time! When they go to a meeting this idea in five minutes!’ It’s a kind of systemic and present their view, they’ve already built a dynamic that most affects women working in a whole group of allies who are going to push male-dominated environment where men are that idea through.” viewed as having more power.

Situation #2: “Oh no, she’s getting fired up!” When your natural heat and enthusiasm for a subject gets misinterpreted as evidence that you’re overly emotional, and thereby being irrational. “I’ve also heard, ‘You have to be careful or she’ll start crying,’ or ‘It must be that time of the month.’ It’s a tough situation to try to handle. Sometimes if you feel like you’re passionate about a topic, it’s helpful to say, ‘I’m very passionate about this topic!’ That way, when they say ‘Oh she’s getting fired up,’ you can say, ‘I sure am!’ And if you’re feeling angry, it’s okay to say, ‘I’m getting angry!’”

My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me. Jim Valvano

“He did NOT just say that!” “Women are generally sensitive to non-verbal’s going around the room, so you’ll see that eyebrow raise, or the glance shared between men. And I would just suggest that you say, ‘I can see that some of you are questioning my direction, and this is obviously something I care about, but I’m open to discussing more questions about it.’ I wouldn’t suggest something that’s detrimental, like saying ‘Wipe that smirk off your face!’”

Situation #3: “WHAT did you say?” When a male coworker drops a suggestive, inappropriate comment and everyone looks to see how you’ll respond. “It’s best to call it out when you see it, when it first happens. Women have a tendency to second guess what the other person meant, or to make excuses like, ‘Phil’s a nice guy, I don’t think he would have meant it like that.’ So they’re quiet, but by being quiet, it often makes the situation worse. Of course, that’s difficult because calling it out goes against some of our socialization as women, which is to be very polite and always try to save face. “You can say, ‘I’m not sure how you meant for that to sound, but this is how it sounded to me…’ or ‘I know you thought that was funny, but it wasn’t to me.’ That gives the person the opportunity to say wait, I didn’t mean it that way. “Because of my background, I tend toward not giving the person a second chance. If you say something inappropriate and offensive, you need to know you do not say that in front of me, behind me or to other people. And the next time it happens, I will go to the manager or human resources and make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”

Perhaps it takes courage to raise children. John Steinbeck

Actress and producer Hallie Jordan on her persistent rise in television and film.

“So keep pushing – keep creating. And don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.”

14 Flourish Magazine | June/2015

Described by Hollywood insiders as a “relentless redhead with a free spirit and a determined will,” Hallie Jordan has earned her place in the world of television and film. This actress, producer and founder of Small Red Star Productions has worked her way through every aspect of the industry and this summer sits poised and ready for multiple motion picture releases including highly anticipated horror flick, Tell Me Your Name. Here, she shares what she’s learned on her journey thus far – about facing rejection, life in L.A. and making your professional dreams come true.

Before I got married I had six theories about raising children; now, I have six children and no theories. John Wilmot

Tell me a little about your background and how you got started in acting. I’ve been acting since I was around six years old. My grandfather was a publicist for RKO Films, my mom was into the arts and my dad was an inventor in telecommunications, so I was always surrounded my theatre, film and TV. I just followed it!

Where do you think that drive and courage within yourself comes from? A lot of factors. I went to a new school every year from fifth grade until college, and lived in a new house from kindergarten until college, so I’ve had to learn to adapt in a lot of different ways. I think I’m able to do it now because I don’t give myself another option. I always say if you can see yourself doing Can you tell me about some something else and being happy, of your current projects? do it. I couldn’t be. But mostly right moving forward. now I’m working on Tell Me Your Name. It’s similar to the Exorcist – Do you find yourself a horror movie. Dress Decisions Your Wedding Party Will

You’ve set the date, secured the location and organized a bridal party of your closest family and friends. Now they’re all calling with the same question: what do you want me to wear? If you start online, you’ll quickly find the same matching dresses, ties and penguin suits that have long been lamented by friends of the happy couple. So before you go searching, take pause to reflect on your vision for the event and how your bridal party fits into it. With just three decisions you can keep the wedding plan you want without sacrificing your friends’ style (or sanity)!

Decide on a budget. Everyone wants to keep costs low, but “low” is a relative term once wedding planning begins. Think about how much your wedding party can realistically afford to spend on your event (transport, attire and all parties included) and set a hard limit on the price point of dresses, suits and extra expenses. 16 Flourish Magazine | June/2015

Adore

Decide to be flexibly firm. Poor wedding party attire looks bad for everyone – the friends who wear it, and the couples who pick it out. Instead of confining your group to matching get-ups, pick a general fabric and color palate that fits with your wedding’s décor then leave it to each individual to choose from there. With just a couple unifying accessories, your group will look stylishly united in clothes they’ll actually wear again! Decide on a leader. Not every best man or maid of honor is cut out to be the point person on everyday wedding tasks. To keep concerns to a minimum, put the most organized member of the wedding party in charge of fielding fashion questions from everyone else. You’ll alleviate the hassle of answering the same question again and again, while freeing up your bridal party to voice their concerns without “bothering” the bride.

So how do you regain that intimacy when you’re in a slump? Scientists think it may be as easy as changing the way you think about your actions.

By Kirsten Nielsen

Increase

Intimacy by Changing Your Thoughts

If you’re anything like most long-term couples, that electric sexual chemistry you had during the first heady months has long since faded. While this is normal and often signifies that your love has moved into a more stable phase, sometimes you can’t help but miss that spark.

Psychologists have long agreed that most behavior can be categorized in one of two ways: either done to avoid something negative or to achieve something positive. Think about the last time you and your partner were intimate. Why did you behave the way you did? Were you trying to accomplish something positive (to show love, feel pleasure or bring your partner joy), or avoid something negative (to prevent a fight, avoid disappointing your partner or break the feeling of being in a rut. Studies show that the latter can breed resentment, while focusing on positive outcomes can increase intimacy, happiness and satisfaction. So the next time you’re with your partner, try to focus on all the positive things that will result. It will affect more than you know!

life however I’d like, what would it look like? For now, don't worry about whether the fantasy is realistic or achievable; give yourself permission to let the sky be the limit.

Compare your current life situation to your ideal one, and make note of the areas where there are differences. Solutions can come later; the point of this exercise is to bring conscious awareness to aspects of your life that are misaligned with your deeplyfelt longings. Then you'll have an idea where your efforts to create change in your life might yield the best bang for the buck. Connect with intrinsic motivation. People often strive for things that are external to them, like making more money or having more power or a nicer car. These are called extrinsic goals, and research shows that focusing on them can diminish your overall feelings of happiness and wellbeing. People who hold intrinsic goals – for instance, to be skilled, compassionate, fulfilled or trustworthy – tend to be happier regardless of how successful they are in achieving them.

at your job, or helpful to your coworkers. If you start making progress in those goals, it's a win-win: your chances for making more money at work increase, and you'll almost certainly feel happier and better about yourself in the meantime.

Use others to highlight your deeply-held values. The best intrinsic goals arise from values that are genuinely important to you, but identifying those values may not come easily. Try making a list of people you admire and then the qualities of theirs that you like so much. Perhaps generosity, honesty or commitment to their craft? Whatever they are, their resonance with you probably means that you would enjoy having those qualities, or more of them, yourself.

others do have a place in this discussion, but our senses, brain and nervous system – working together in something called the "social engagement system" – are optimized for detecting, cultivating and savoring in-person human contact. When your deepest human social needs are being met, this system produces short-term positive feelings and long-term psychological and physical health benefits.

Those needs don't change much from infancy through adulthood. We need to feel seen, heard, acknowledged, and cared for – to have the sense that someone is there to respond if we need help. We need people to support and help us feel capable of achieving our goals, while not making us feel dependent upon them. Intrinsic goals are also durable. Keeping your sights set on them can help keep you stable and pointed in the right direction when inevitable short-term and day-to-day difficulties threaten to throw you off course.

Know your false social network. So-called "toxic people" exist out there, ready to play the opposite role. Such people may be obvious and intentional in their undermining of your efforts, while others may be more subtle. It can be helpful to assess how well your roster of relationships is meeting those universal social needs I mentioned above. Also, compare the characteristics of your social contacts to those that your "admirable" people embody – which, again, are reflections of something deep inside of you. Consider how any mismatches you find may be impacting your wellbeing now and, ultimately, your ability to achieve the kind of life you fantasize about. Don't forget kindness for yourself. Using these tips will help you to take stock of who you are at your core and what’s keeping that part from gleaming. A little polishing might do the trick, or you may have to put in a bit more elbow grease. Sometimes, getting unstuck means making hard choices about your career, the people in your life or any number of factors to which you've become accustomed. Above all, take it easy on yourself if you discover during your “whole life overhaul” that some things are out of whack. You have a brain that, in some ways, is working against you and, if you're like most people, you have responsibilities that pull you in many different directions. On top of that, society's messages to us don't help, since they're much more oriented toward short-term gratification than long-term well-being.

I remember the first day I told my mom I was pregnant. Almost immediately, she reassured me, “Don’t be nervous – the first year goes by so quickly.” “The first year?!” I exclaimed. “I’m still reading up on the first trimester!” In fact, I’d already read so much online about common and uncommon symptoms, what to eat, what not to eat, what to start and what to stop that I could hardly imagine making it through nine months without causing myself or my growing child lasting harm. My mom was gifted with cakes; I catch shade walking into Starbucks. My mom kept her feet up; I field questions about my gym schedule and how many pounds I’ve gained. One thing’s for sure: this is not my mother’s pregnancy. After talking with other expecting mothers, I know I’m not the only one feeling the heat that seems to emanate largely from growing online communities, where everyone has a voice and a venue for being heard. For help sifting through the endless annals of blogs, forums, databases and how-to guides, we need more than our moms’ advice – we need medical specialists. At Flourish, we reached out to Anthony Agrios, MD and Shelly Russell, CNM of All About Women Obstetrics and Gynecology to get the scoop on how women are handling (and not handling) the information onslaught of the 21st century.

The Good While stressful, having information at our finger tips is something of a luxury. “I think [the online community] is helping women have a better idea of what to expect in a normal pregnancy,” explains Dr. Agrios. “They can learn a lot by chatting with other pregnant women who are in a similar situation and look up information about normal development. So a lot of the casual aches and pains that women used to be horrified by, now they already know are normal by the time they come in to see us.”

Still, even as information helps eradicate some fears and advance medical science, cyber space can feel like a dangerous place.

The Bad “The danger when you’re online searching is that there is no filter,” Dr. Agrios admits. “[Expectant mothers] have no way of apprising how common the frightening horror stories they read about actually are.” As a result, women often fear that one blogger’s rare problem is a real risk for them, even if the actual odds indicate otherwise. CNM Shelly Russell agrees, “It’s not so much the advice that’s bad, but more the reaction that says, ‘This thing happened to this person…Oh my gosh, is it going to happen to me?!’” Additionally, as they’re reading horror stories, women are also encountering the pressures of blog after blog about how to do pregnancy “right.” “Hearing all these stories from others, it sort of raises your expectations because everyone thinks they’re doing things exactly right. You’re never going to exactly match someone else, because every pregnancy is different,” Dr. Agrios explains. “Also, [bloggers] are also often looking to push a certain storyline – maybe a tragedy that happened to them, or some fear they have – but they end up skewing the information.” So with all the good and bad out there battling for our attention, how are we supposed to know what’s reliable, and what’s just noise?

In addition, medical practices are able to advance their methodology and procedures at a faster rate than ever before. “We get faster conversion to new technology thanks to the spread of information,” Dr. Agrios adds. “Doctors will start to discover something and begin practicing a new way, while the textbooks still preach the old way.” If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Pregnancy Apps, Doctor Approved!

“BabyBump and WhatToExpect both look pretty good. Patients always ask how big the baby is, what does it look like, and those are both great at giving you that information right away.” CNM Shelly Russell “The Mayo Pregnancy app also gives hints of warning signs, so if a woman starts to develop new symptoms, she can type that in and know if it’s a problem, or if she will likely wake up and find it gone.” Dr. Anthony Agrios

How to

Make it Work for Look for reliable sources. “I think a good rule of thumb is to focus on academic center websites, like the Mayo Clinic. Us.gov also has several healthcare websites,” Dr. Agrios recommends. “Those sites have carefully reviewed and edited information, and that helps weed out some of the more outlandish ideas.” Set your own boundaries. Since there is no limit to how much information can be posted, set your own limits for how much you can read. Dr. Agrios suggests that when it comes to sources, women should choose to consult more than one but less than four. “That way you get a balanced look,” he explains. “Also, no matter what you’re reading, you should avoid the comment section. They’re usually from people with no medical training whatsoever who just want to tear down or contradict the article.” 26 Flourish Magazine | June/2015

Know your stress limits. Finally, it’s important to stay aware of your own stress levels and learn how to manage them carefully. “[If you just spend time online], you’re going to get overwhelmed!” says CNM Russell. “The best thing is to prepare to come in with a list of questions or concerns and discuss them with us.” Dr. Agrios adds that women who are prone to nervous speculation might consider seeking out Certified Nurse Midwives for their unique training in some of the more emotional aspects of pregnancy. “I think the people who go into [certified nurse midwifery) are more tuned into the emotional state of their patients,” he explains. “We see that a lot of patients in our practice who are particularly fearful or have difficult situations seek out Shelly or one of our other midwives.”

You “I do spend a fair amount of time doing emotional counseling as well,” Russell agrees. Most importantly, remember to seek counsel you know you can trust – the kind that comes from your personal OB, CNM or doctor. “Get some ideas on the internet,” Dr. Agrios suggests, “but then call your doctor or midwife. We’ve gone through years and years of training and schooling. “A woman going through pregnancy cannot be expected to assimilate all that information just in the course of one pregnancy!

Everybody knows how to raise children, except the people who have them. P.J. O’Rourke

Rad

American Women Authors honor radical U.S. women in new bestselling children’s book By Elizabeth Putfark

You might think you know your A, B, C’s, but you’ve never learned them like this. Now in its second printing inside of two months, Rad American Women A – Z brings kids and parents the stories of some of America’s greatest unsung heroines. Starting with “A is for Angela Davis,” and ending with “Z is for Zora Neal Hurston,” writer Kate Schatz and illustrator Miriam Klein fearlessly applaud the accomplishments of women from every nook and cranny of America’s diverse culture. Some names you’ll probably know – like civil rights advocate, Ella Baker and Olympic track star Florence “Flo-Jo” Griffith-Joyner. More important, however, are all of the names you won’t. From activists and artists to authors and schoolteachers, 28 Flourish Magazine | June/2015

this book shines a spotlight on women who changed the course of U.S. history but weren’t always given the right to sign their names to their work. In fact, to highlight the historical anonymity of radical women, Kate and Miriam make the letter X a tribute to “the Women Whose Names We Don’t Know.” Rad American Women A – Z has obviously filled a void in contemporary children’s literature as booksellers can’t keep it on the shelves. To find out more about the book’s overnight success, we caught up with Kate and Miriam on their book tour of the west coast. If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. Albert Einstein

Miriam: I have an almost eight year old daughter, and when Kate told me about the book I thought it was a really great idea. Kate showed me the initial list of the women she was thinking about and I had already done portraits on around five of them! So we both thought, this could be really great!

What’s been the hardest part of the process? Miriam: I think making the list of women was the biggest challenge, because obviously there were some letters where we really loved all our choices. Kate: There are 26 women in the book, but there could easily be 26,000. I think for me as the writer, the other challenge was finding a voice. I wanted the book to be accessible for young readers, but I didn’t want to dumb it down. I’m also dealing with really sensitive, sometimes controversial subject So I had the idea, what if I did an A matters in the book. It directly to Z book on rad American women? addresses race, class, gender and I started sharing the idea with friends sexuality, and I wanted to do that in and they all got really excited, which a way that was really straightforward made me realize that it wasn’t just me and direct, but that was also that wanted something like that; respectful and age appropriate. there was a need!

Tell me about how this project got started. Kate: I was looking for books to read to [my two-year-old daughter] that would be inspiring, educational, fun and empowering, and I wasn’t really finding much out there.

How did you narrow down the list? Kate: I was a Women’s Studies major in college, so it’s always been a real passion of mine. Once I made my list, I sent Facebook messages to about 80 friends and I got wonderful feedback and all kinds of great ideas. I wanted to make the book as diverse as possible, both in terms of race and ethnicity as well as time period and what the women were doing – I wanted a really broad range. Once I partnered with Miriam, we collaborated as well.

There’s obviously a high demand, and you’ve said yourself that a lot of women were still left out. Is there a spinoff in the future? Kate: Oh definitely, this is going to be a series, although we don’t know exactly what that’ll look like yet. We have a few ideas we’re batting around. How do you feel about the fact that this is an unusual, neverbeen-done-before-seen, “radical” book, even in 2015? Kate: You know, no one’s asked that yet but I’ve actually been thinking about it a lot. Although I’m obviously thrilled that people are so excited about it, this shouldn’t be that exciting! People shouldn’t be so blown away that there’s a diverse book about women that aren’t familiar. It shouldn’t be that stunning and shocking that a transgender woman is included, and that we’re honest about race. Hopefully, this is a part of a movement towards more books like this. Find out more and order your copy at www.radamericanwomen.com.

Miriam, what drew you to the project? A baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on. Carl Sandburg

Creating Valuable

Traditions are so important to uphold in today’s fast-paced society; they are what bond families and keep them bonded. Especially in an on-the-go age where everyone is constantly connected to computers, tablets and smartphones, it is vital to value great family traditions and keep them sacred and celebrated.

Family Traditions Whether it is a weekly family dinner, an annual trip to the cabin or a fun holiday caroling tradition, there are many exciting rituals that your family can do as a bonding experience. Here are a few suggestions for starting traditions that your family can keep going for years to come:

A random act of kindness. At the beginning of the week (or maybe at Sunday dinner), have everyone think of at least one nice thing that they can do for someone else that week. You can decide on something the entire family can do, or set individual goals. It could be as simple as inviting someone new to sit 34 Flourish Magazine | June/2015

Depending on the length of your trip and budget, have everyone decide on one (or more) activity your family will do while away. Or, you can put activities into a hat and take turns drawing them.

Create a family time capsule. Decorate a bucket or box and have everyone pick something to put in it. It can be anything – a keepsake from a vacation, a photo, something they made, a report card, a sock – anything they want. Write the year on the time capsule and bury it in your yard or attic. Every five years on the same date, dig out the time capsule and reminisce about what everyone put in it. Then have everyone add another item, write the current year on it and

Write a family song. If your family is even slightly musical, you could collaborate together on writing a short family song or ditty. It doesn’t have to be an award-winning masterpiece; just something fun or silly that says who your family is. You can sing this together on holidays, birthdays, family events and vacations. DIY Sewing Cards

for Kids

I remember the beginning sewing projects that I made as a kid. My stitches were far apart and uneven, but I sewed pillowcase after pillowcase by hand and I LOVED it! As an adult, it’s taken me years to learn how to use a sewing machine, but each time I do, I remember so many fond memories of my Grandmothers. That’s why I was so excited about this simple (and cheap) beginning sewing project for my preschooler – it’s a great way to practice the art of sewing by hand!

Be Gentle With Yourself Nobody realizes how difficult being sidelined is until they experience it themselves. You might find yourself battling feelings of anger, sadness, boredom and melancholy. On top of that, your body is quitting cold turkey all the endorphins it used to enjoy every workout. Not exercising at all can be difficult to deal with, so be gentle with yourself and try to remember that your situation will not last forever. In the meanwhile, look for other things you enjoy and don’t be afraid to indulge a little.

Round-Up of Monthly Tips The Five Healthy Magic Pills You're in an exam room, wearing a blue paper robe as the doctor checks your blood pressure, heart rate, breathing and weight. Afterward, he reaches into his pocket, takes out five oversized pills and places them on the counter. Something is written on each one: 1. Begin exercising regularly; 2. Continue to not smoke; 3. Eat a healthy diet; 4. If you drink alcohol, do so moderately; and 5. Maintain a healthy weight. "You need all of these," he says, "but it's hard to swallow five at once. So today you're taking just one. Guess which is the best to start with?" 42 Flourish Magazine | June/2015

If you guessed, "begin exercising regularly," you're right! When you start to improve your health with physical activity and stick with it, other healthboosting habits naturally follow. 1. S tart a walking program (get a buddy and a pedometer). Aim for 10,000 steps a day. As you get stronger, insert stretches of intense walking so that you break a sweat and your respiration rate goes up.

3. Expending all that energy makes your body crave nutritious fuel. You'll banish the Five Food Felons (they make you sluggish). 4. And you'll start drinking less. Alcohol dehydrates and interferes with large muscle control (hard to keep walking!). 5. All of that helps shed excess pounds! Your reward? You'll cut your risk for dementia by 60 percent and for diabetes and heart attack by 70 percent!

Future Dads: Your Offspring Are What You Eat! Maggie Simpson has an IQ of 158 (that's in the genius range), even though year after year her growth seems as stunted as her vocabulary! 2. development throughout life. (Since Maggie's dad, Homer, is a beerswilling, meat-loving, sweets-gobbling tubb-o, it may explain her developmental delays.) But seriously, how can a man's diet influence the health of his yet-to-beconceived children? Genes within sperm can be turned on and off in response to environmental triggers (obesity, nutritional deficiencies, insulin resistance, chronic stress, etc.). And these altered genetic messages are passed along through sperm to an embryo at conception. After birth, they influence the metabolism of his children and may predispose the kids to a roster of diseases later in life, including diabetes and cancer. We're thinking men of childbearing age should follow the recommendations that we suggest to all women who could become pregnant (since 50 percent of pregnancies are unplanned). They are: Take a prenatal multivitamin daily, divided in half, and make sure you get 400 mcg of folate a day to avoid birth defects such as spina bifida, as well as plenty of omega-3 DHA (900 mg) for eye and brain development (it also increases the chances of conception). Plus, avoid red meat; trans and saturated fats; and added sugars or syrups (you hear Homer yowling?); and eat only 100 percent whole grains. Dads, it's your turn to step up to the (nutritional) plate.

We thought we'd be singing that tune again when viewers of Katie Couric's TV show "Katie" got the impression that the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine could cause life-threatening complications. But soon after that broadcast, Katie featured the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's head of vaccination programs, who said that 57 million doses have been given with no serious problems. And on her website, Katie features a medical expert who states "no cause and effect relationship between the HPV vaccine and some of the serious side effects that have been reported" has been found. Cervical cancer kills more than 4,000 North American women annually. If all 12-year-olds got the HPV vaccine, in the future around 1,300 such fatalities could be avoided each year. It also helps prevent cancers of the anus, vagina, penis, head and neck in men and women. So ask your doc what vaccines you're missing, and make plans to get them. Our suggestions: A flu shot every year; if you're 50 or older, boosters for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, and the shingles vaccine. Over 65? Ask about the pneumonia vaccine.

Surviving a Family Trip to a

Theme

Park

By Kirsten Nielsen

Summer break means gorgeous weather, rambunctious kids and plenty of free time for family vacations. Whether you’re planning a fun-filled weekend at Disney World or a day at a water park to beat the heat, use our tips to make sure your vacation is filled with smiles instead of headaches! Know Your Crowd Florida boasts an incredible amount of amusement parks: from kidoriented parks like Disney World to more adult-friendly fare like Busch Gardens. When planning your trip, take into account everyone in your family or group. Are you little ones daredevils who love rollercoasters or do they prefer to keep their feet firmly planted on the ground? Parks can vary greatly in terms of the rides they offer, along with the average height requirements. If your group includes all ages and all levels of thrill-seekers, look for a park like SeaWorld, which includes low-key animal activities along with high-flying rides. 32 Flourish Magazine | June/2015

Have a Weather Plan Florida weather is often beautiful, but it can change drastically from day to day (or even hour to hour!). Bring rain gear even if the skies are perfectly blue and know the park’s rules for inclement weather. Some parks will be open regardless of rain, while others are required to shut down rides if lightning is in the area. If the forecast looks doubtful and you are only going for a day or two, look for a park that will still be fun if it’s raining!

Schedule Your Time Most theme parks are so massive Budget Wisely that you can’t even attempt to see It’s no secret that amusement parks everything in one day! You don’t know fun until you’ve played Cowboy Musical Chairs – at least, that’s probably what these two University of Florida students (C. A. Robbins and B. Hibbs) would have told you back in 1947 as they wrestled for the last available seat. This event was one of many highlights in the annual “Block and Bridle” club rodeo, a celebration and tribute to the agrarian roots of UF students raised in the heart of Florida cattle country. 30 Flourish Magazine | June/2015

Block Bridle In the cowboy version of this childhood classic, two lines of chairs are placed on opposite ends of a rodeo arena. The action begins with all cowboys and cowgirls seated on one side (where there are enough seats for everyone) holding onto their steeds be the reins. When the music starts, they have to mount up, race to the other end and claim one of the remaining chairs, all while maintaining control over their horse. One chair

the Block and Bridle club, which still thrives at UF in Gainesville today. The organization was established in 1919 by students from animal husbandry programs around the country. Their aim was to provide members with professional development through areas of service, education and leadership, while also making a positive impact on the agricultural industry by investing in the next generation. Nowadays, the club’s mission remains the same. In the Gainesville chapter, students at UF and Santa Fe College are invited to join with other students, faculty and industry leaders as they prepare for careers in animal science related fields. With over 92 regional branches in colleges and universities around the United States, students have the opportunity to network and compete at the national level in contests related to the animal agricultural industry.

The Block and Bridle Emblem The club emblem is and always has been a large “B” accentuated on the top with a meat block and cleaver, and on the bottom with an equestrian bridle. While overtly agrarian, the symbolism of the insignia goes far beyond the physical tools it depicts. The straight and perpendicular backbone of the “B” symbolizes the upright character, sincerity and morality of initiated members, while its curves speak to those same members’ social pleasure, energy and determination. The meat cleaver represents the material aspects of agrarian life, including the hard physical labor required, while the bridle in the lower half stands for the self-control endemic to those who respect themselves, their company and their livestock.

What do you get when you combine yoga, $1 and an uploaded photo? Maybe a step towards the end of deforestation. At least that’s the hope of Annette Cain, founder of the Plant a Tree Pose movement. Inspired to get the word out about global deforestation in a fun, impactful way, endurance athlete Annette sent out a call for photos from around the world asking people to “Plant a Tree Pose” for the environment. Participants uploaded pictures of themselves in the basic yoga stance to plantatreepose.com, accompanied by a $1 donation, and were guaranteed a spot in the sixstory photomosaic to be unveiled on the side of a New York City building on World Environment Day, June 5th.

was part of the impetus for me with this movement – seeing what they’re doing and realizing that we need to do something now before it’s too late. Holistically speaking, when we take a moment to be aware of something and put movement with it, it can inspire us to action. I thought this would be a fun way for people to feel like they’re doing something to better the world and create a really cool piece of art, too.

Why commemorate this particular movement with art? What has made you so invested in environmental issues? I grew up in Belize. I was a barefoot kid – everything was about being outside, being creative and just being surrounded by the beauty of nature. Then I went UC Davis where I majored in Nutrition but minored in Environmental Toxicology. I had to do a project where I had to trace something back to petroleum and I chose the fake crab meat with the red dye sold in stores. It turns out basically anything with red dye 40 is petroleum based. That was a real wakeup call for me. What’s next for you and the organization? Fun with Gainesville’s Magic Mike and the Jongleur Jugglers

The Jongleur Jugglers, Michael Stillwell and John Creveling, Gainesville’s most popular comedic juggling duo, met in 1980. “I was in college and John was pursuing his masters when we both answered an ad for jugglers in the play “Carnival” at the University of Florida,” explains Michael, better known around Gainesville as Magic Mike. “John and I had both juggled with other people and had a lot of fun, but we really hit it off with each other.” The pair worked out an act and soon started putting on paid shows, all while Mike brushed up on his magic tricks as a waiter working for tips.

Summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language. Henry James

While being straightlaced and family friendly is still one of the acts’ biggest selling points among local audiences, which include kids and adults at festivals like the Medieval Faire, libraries, private parties and functions, several other traits set their act apart. Before long they had a consistent following. “At first we weren’t trying to make a profit,” says Mike, who after graduation made his side job as a performer into his career. “Instead, we and the couple others who joined us would put all the money we made in a bank account then use it to go to the national juggling conventions.”

First, the amount of time they spend juggling. Unlike other entertainers who mix long theatrical interludes into their shows, the Jongleur Jugglers try to keep balls in the air for most of their performance.

Second, the high value they place on audience participation. While many performers will invite one or two audience members on stage, Mike and John will juggle around 12 kids at a time, or sometimes even the The pair still cherishes fond memories whole audience. from those competitions, which are In fact, their focus on participation still put on annually by the often extends beyond the show. International Jugglers’ Association. “One year at the Atlanta competition, we did an act that we thought went particularly well,” Mike reflects. “We hit all our numbers, the audience went crazy, but we didn’t win. Which was fine – it’s competition. But we knew we had a reputation of being straightlaced, family friendly and not too wild, so for the midnight show we had this idea to pretend we were really mad about losing. So John and I started the act kind of grumbling, passing a bottle around while we were juggling. Everyone was laughing because they knew it was all a joke – they knew this wasn’t us! “We ended up getting a standing ovation and first prize for this kind of raunchy act that we made up on the fly,” Mike laughs.

Of course, after 35 years together, the Jongleur Jugglers don’t need too much practice anymore. “Most of what we do today, we started back in college,” Mike admits. “We might add a little here or take away there, but we don’t sit down to have a writing sessions or anything.” While Mike stays busy year round with magic shows and performances, the longstanding duo still books around 25 shows a year, many for repeat audiences who invite them back again and again. So to my final question, “What’s next for you two?” John laughs. “After over 30 years, I think we’ll probably just keep doing what we’re doing!” To book Magic Mike and/or the Jongleur Jugglers for your next function or event, visit MeetMagicMike.com. More information also available at JongleurJugglers.com.

“We have had shows where we do our act, and then they ask us to stay for another hour and teach juggling,” John explains. “Generally, the kids want to know the basic idea, though, and then they’re kind of done with it. So a lot of times when you’re teaching a class, you still need to put on a show then have teaching be some smaller part of it.” After our conversation, Mike and John give me a rundown of the basic technique. As it turns out, John is right – they can teach me enough to get me started, but then I need to go home and practice on my own!

Summer has always been my favorite season. I feel happier. Zooey Deschanel

What is a

Pretty To find out more about the process, much if we can test it, we’re testing it! we spoke with Florida native Karl Spitzer of Gainesville’s own Pillar to Post home inspection agency. buyer the information they need to make an informed decision. The biggest things that would usually make a buyer stop and think a little harder would if they have to replace a roof, or if we see a lot of non-typical settlement cracks indicative of unstable soil surfaces where they’re going to need some possible remediation. Also the environmental concerns like microbial growth and radon. These things might not stop someone from purchasing, but might make them consider requiring a remigration service prior to purchasing.

What are some particular high risk that Gainesville homeowners can or should expect to encounter? Certain areas of Alachua County are hot spots for Radon. Also, a lot of the battles now come from the large number of bank owned properties

I face [my mistakes] every day--that way they ain’t usually much worse than a dry shave. Augustus McCrae

that have been sitting for a while starting to sell again. The biggest thing we see in those houses, where there’s been no air conditioning or heat, is microbial growth. We don’t call it mold until it’s tested. Remediation of that can be very costly.

With internet resources, there’s a DIY revolution in home improvements and repairs. How has that affected the way people read their home reports? Sometimes the internet is a dangerous thing; people like to self-diagnose, and that’s not always the right move. I like to tell people that we are everybody’s liability policy. We’re the homeowner’s liability policy, we’re the real estate office’s liability policy and we’re the buyer’s liability policy. Does the home inspection ever warrant renegotiations on price?

A lot of the times, yes, even on “As-Is” contracts, which there are a lot of due to the number of bank owned homes. I do find that a lot of times people will take our inspection and go back to the bank or whoever owns the home and renegotiate the pricing or try to get that done first, pre-purchase.

How did you get started in home inspections? I had been running Silver Springs and Wild Waters in Ocala for three years when they decided to let everyone in management go. A buddy of mine had purchased this franchise down in Marion County and it seemed like good work, so I bought a franchise in Alachua, not really even knowing what type of business it was. And it’s been very good for me except for the crash in the market. We’ve been very fortunate.

Kirk, tell me about Razzd.com. How did you develop this idea? K: Razzd.com is a mobile app that allows people to get an insight into how the majority feels about an argument. There are studies that show that the average couple can bicker almost 2,500 times a year and have as many as 312 arguments. More than a way to be heard and entertained, Razzd.com gives people a point of reference. You see so many votes sway to one side that you start looking at the situation a little differently. It’s really a new and better way to argue. What kind of reception has it gotten? K: The response has been phenomenal. People not only enjoy using it, but also get invested in the outcomes. When there’s an argument up there, I always get texts from people saying how they can’t wait to see how it comes out. It’s engaging. 14 Flourish Magazine | June/2015

Speaking of public engagement, how do you handle some of the negativity from the world? K: I always think of Jimmy Kimmel’s “Bad Text” bit, where celebrities have to read mean texts and tweets about themselves. I get kind of a kick out of it. I’m pretty honest, a very selfdeprecating guy actually. Part of the show is my realization of how heavy I am, so when someone says I’m fat, I don’t take it that personally. L: You have to be able to laugh at it. I don’t think that most people are truly mean spirited, they’re just enjoying watching the show and making their snarky comments. We’re all trying to have fun with it.

So are you both happy you did the show? L: Yes, it’s been fun! K: I enjoy putting our lives out there. Laura and I are really adventurous

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

Cdi ?jhi ;dg 6cn =dbZ people; we’re risk takers. We have things that we want to do and accomplish, crazy things in our lives. It’s not that this was on our bucket list, it’s just one of those opportunities that’s unique. Good, bad or in-between, it’s going to be an experience. That’s what I’ve enjoyed – the experience.

Is there a piece of advice if you could go back and tell yourself prior to filming what would it be? K: I probably would have lost some weight before the show. [Laughs.] L: Stop saying that! You’re so hard on yourself! K: I am. You know, I think probably I wouldn’t say very much. I think being naïve going into it is almost a little is a better, because you get to be of yourself. I’m glad I did not get a tremendous amount of advice, because that might have thrown me into a very guarded personae on TV, and I wouldn’t have had the same experience. L: Also, the film crew we worked with was fantastic. They did a great job of fading into the background and letting us be ourselves. Anytime you have a bunch of cameras around you you’re going to feel guarded at first, but it was easy to let that go.

Do you think it’s been a good representation of you so far? K: It made me look a little more into the money than I am. I do like money and I do like having nice things, but I’m not that arrogant. That doesn’t sum me up. So there are some things that come across accurate, then other things that are really more of a caricature of who we are. L: Absolutely. Kirk is such a fun loving, kind, big hearted man, that it hurts my heart when he’s not represented in that way. But we understood what we signed up for. And I think with this last episode, they started to show more of our playful side, especially with Kirk. Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you. Joseph Heller

Bravo’s

Newlyweds: The First Year

Kirk and Laura Knight on their experience starring on the hit reality show Not much is as intimate as the first year of marriage. Now imagine that first year accompanied by a camera crew. Sound like a nightmare? Not to Bravo’s newest stars, Kirk and Laura Knight. This power couple bares all the stress, struggle and excitement of combining their busy personal and professional lives in season two of “Newlyweds: The First Year.” Here, they take time out from their ongoing careers and Kirk’s newest project, Razzd.com, to talk with us about their experiences on camera and their feelings now as they watch the tapes back. One thing is for sure – reality television is not for the faint of heart, but for the Knights, it’s just one more exciting experience they’re happy to share!

So what has it been like to relive some of your past struggles now on television? K: It’s interesting. It really shows a lot of what we go through. There’s a lot of things that we actually didn’t even remember.

What has surprised you about seeing yourself on TV? K: The biggest shock for me is how fat I am! My gosh! L: [Laughs.] I actually am surprised that I look pretty pulled together and calm. Because in my brain, that’s not how things are working.

L: So much happens over the course of a year. We had so many ups and downs and twists and turns. There are things we forgot about or things we were surprised they didn’t put in there. We’re on the edge of our seats with everyone else, waiting to see what happens next!

For both of you, what do you think has been the key to your success in business? K: I’ve said to my kids, the second best way to learn a lesson is to learn from your mistakes. The best is that you learn from someone else’s. In real Did you two have any fears about estate investing, I’ve really absorbed joining the show to begin with? Michael White was named the 2014-15 Conference USA Coach of the Year and led Louisiana Tech to a 101-40 record during four seasons.

Florida has new head coaches in its three most popular sports — at least in terms of home attendance. Jim McElwain is running Gators football, Michael White heads up men’s basketball and Jenny Rowland jumps into gymnastics. They are three names few fans had heard of heading into 2015. While Will Muschamp’s firing was somewhat expected, the departures of multinational championship-winning coaches Billy Donovan and Rhonda Faehn were not. What shouldn’t have surprised fans was athletic director Jeremy Foley’s choiceo f replacements. Rarely has he hired the “hot” candidate or “big name” veteran to satisfy the masses and earn some media mouthpiece’s definition of a “homerun hire.”

Fresh Faces Flood UF Staff Florida introduces new coaches in three most popular sports 10 Flourish Magazine | June/2015

Instead, Foley researches up-and-comers, searching for character traits that fit the University of Florida’s culture of winning – on and off the field. It’s worked. Since the office ticket intern punched in as athletic director in 1992, UF has finished as the top-ranked overall program in the SEC and won 24 of the school’s 34 national championships. Three of those championship came consecutively over the past three years by Faehn’s Gator gymnasts. “She wants Gator gymnasts to thrive in all aspects of their student-athletic career – in the classroom, in the competitive arena and in developing the life skills to be successful following college,” Foley said May 9 in announcing Rowland’s hiring. Rowland inherits the three-time defending NCAA champions after Faehn left for a prominent role with USA Gymnastics. In April, Rowland was named co-National Assistant Coach of the Year after helping Auburn make the Super Six for the first time in 22 years. The Bedford, Texas, native was an All-American at Arizona State in 1993 and on the 1989 USA World Championship team before coaching at Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy (1996-2000), Oklahoma (2001-06) and Auburn (2010–15). Stop wearing your wishbone where your backbone ought to be. Elizabeth Gilbert

Donovan’s offer from the Oklahoma City Thunder to coach stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook was too much to turn down for the two-time national champ. Simply put, Gators basketball will not be the same without “Billy Ball” being played in the O-Dome for the first time in 19 seasons. Foley said White “came to the top of our list very quickly and he checks all of the boxes we were looking for.” The first two boxes, or at least the first two things Foley mentioned when announcing White’s hiring May 7, involved character traits. Foley called him a “winner” with a “high-level of integrity.” White, who was born in Dunedin, agreed in principle to a six-year deal worth $2 million per year. He coached Louisiana Tech the past four seasons, guiding the Bulldogs to a 101-40 record and three consecutive Conference USA championships. He’s also familiar with the SEC as he was a four-year starting guard at Ole Miss and also served as an assistant for the Rebels for seven seasons. “He has experience in coaching, recruiting and playing in the Southeastern Conference and has a strong pedigree,” Foley said. “He has a certain authenticity with people and is not afraid of challenges.”

Time is the longest distance between two places. Tennessee Williams

Jenny Rowland was instrumental in building a winning program at Auburn during the past five seasons as an assistant coach at the school.

Florida gymnastics won its third consecutive NCAA Championship by edging Utah by .05 (197.85-197.80) in the Fort Worth Convention Center on April 18. It was the narrowest margin of victory in the 34-year history of the meet.

I can be changed by what happens to me but I refuse to be reduced by it. Maya Angelou

Less than a week later, the builder of UF’s budding dynasty, Rhonda Faehn, informed the Gators she was resigning to become senior vice president of USA Gymnastics. Faehn, 43, said it was “heartbreaking” telling the team. “They were all amazing,” Faehn told GatorVision. “They were hugging me and said, ‘This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, congratulations.’ They were happy for me and sad for themselves and I’m sad as well for that. “But it’s really, it is, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Faehn said it was “just the right time,” to move on and she leaves behind a program primed for success. She’s signed five of the nation’s No. 1 ranked classes in the past six years, including this year’s senior class led by Kytra Hunter, who shattered records throughout her four-year run. “I mean, I can’t say enough words about Kytra,” Faehn said during a post-championship press conference. “About what she’s represented for Florida, but just this entire weekend. Her constancy and determination and, really, just the way she led this team with her enthusiasm.” Hunter won the all-around and floor exercise, giving her a UF-record four NCAA event titles. Fellow senior Kiersten Wang was the second performer up in the floor exercise and “set the tone” for the championship with a 9.9. It was just the second time a UF team has won three straight national titles, joining track & field (men’s indoor, 2010-12). It also was Florida’s 34th national championship in all sports. “This team was really battletested throughout the entire season,” Faehn said. “We had so many struggles this season. It really allowed our athletes to grow and mature and become tougher in those situations. “There were some times in the competition where we weren’t perfect, but I let our athletes know that it’s how you respond… and I thought they did splendid in that area. And it was a great result.” There are only three ways to motivate people: money, fear, and hunger. Ron Swanson

10 New Trips

for Summer 2015 Story and photos by VirtualTourist.com

Nothing says summer like a breathtaking getaway – breathtakingly beautiful, and breathtakingly new! VirtualTourist.com members think the best way to kick off your summer and the rest of your year is Hiking Cinque Terre, Italy to try 10 new things in 2015. Here are their Italy has long been a bastion of cultural icons and landmarks, top picks! from religious sites to Renaissance masterpieces. Of the sites to be visited, Cinque Terre is among the most beautiful and also the most unique. Composed of five small villages perched above the Ligurian Sea, the towns date back to the late medieval period and are still, in 2012, unable to be reached by car. While one can access them by train and boat, neither transport provides the same experience as the hike between the towns: slowly descending from the rocky cliffs into each brightly painted fishing village is an experience unlike any other in the world. Hiking from Riomaggiore, the southernmost village, to the fifth town, Monterosso, is quite a workout: 18 kilometers, or 11 miles, and usually takes about five hours, but can take longer depending on how fit you are!

Skywalking on Tianmen Mountain, Zhangjiajie, Hunan, China Located more than 1,323 kilometers (800 miles) from Shanghai and 1,012 kilometers (628 miles) from Guangzhou, the Skywalk on Tianmen Mountain is unique in the astonishing height at which it was built, while also being built onto a natural object. The pathway, which runs alongside the Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, suspends the visitor 1,430 meters high in the air, providing amazing views of the surrounding mountains and the nature of Hunan Province. A fun fact about this Skywalk: visitors are required to wear sock booties because they have been unable to find workers willing to clean the glass floor at this height! 6

Cycling in Motreal, Quebec, Canada While Montréal’s most famous paths may lie underground, its most intriguing routes lie amongst its 2,400 miles of bike trails and paths. The first North American city to adopt a bicycle-sharing program, Montréal has a few popular rides, including along the Lachine Canal, the quays of the Old Port and Rue McGill. In addition to paths within the city, Montréal lies in the center of the Route Verte, a series of bikeways throughout Quebec modeled after Denmark’s national cycle routes and the Danube and Rhine bikeways. The route, which starts further west at Fort-Coulogne, also connects Montréal with Québec City to the north.

Eating Street Food in Bangkok, Thailand If you’re looking to try new foods this year, Bangkok is the place to do it. VirtualTourist members recommended Soi Rambuttri, a U-shaped lane off of Khao San Raod and near Wat Chana Songkhram, as a great spot in the old district of Bangkok. One member lovingly described his last meal there: after getting an enormous Pad Thai from a street vendor against the wall, he turned 180 degrees to find an open air beer garden. Another highly recommended spot is Soi 38 near Sukumvit, which is almost like an evening food market running until about 3 am, and very close to much of the city’s best nightlife. Green Papaya salad bruised on a stone pestle, mango sticky rice, pad thai and chicken with green curry are all some of the Thai specialties our members mentioned finding in Bangkok. Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out. Robert Collier

Sunbathing on the city beach in Paris, France It’s not surprising that the culture which gave us the bikini would also be the first to figure out how to bring the beach to their fabulous city! The original “plage urbaine,” the Paris Plage began in 2002, with the French converting the Seine’s banks into pedestrian areas as well as sandy sunbathing spots. The first plage spread from the Louvre to the Pont de Sully on Voie Georges Pompidou, covering three kilometers (1.86411 miles) along the Seine River. The popularity of the event caused organizers to build additional plages at Port de la Gare and Bassin de la Villette. The beaches open around July 20 and usually last four weeks, with all Paris Plages open until midnight daily.

Animal Gazing at Serengeti National Park, Tanzania Northern Tanzania provides more opportunities to see large numbers of animals in the wild than possibly any other spot in the world. Serengeti National Park is famous for spotting the “big five,” a phrase coined by hunters in Africa referring to lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards and rhinoceros. The Serengeti area also provides a unique opportunity to watch animal migration in action. The wildebeest and zebras spend the rainy season from December to June in the volcanic open plains below the Ngorongoro Crater where the grass growth is most productive and nutrient contents high. Once the rains stop in June, the animals move west towards Lake Victoria, and then migrate north into the Masai Mara, only to return to the Serengeti with the rain in December. It is one of the last great migratory systems intact and there are few opportunities to see over a million of any species roam together.

Hitting the Road along the Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia Only 60 miles (93 km) from Victoria's capital of Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road winds alongside the Southern Ocean from Torquay to Portland. Created by soldiers returning from the First World War, the route is more than 180 miles (290 km) and includes a variety of sites such as worldrenowned beaches, national parks, and shipwrecks. The most famous spectacle along B100 is the Twelve Apostles, a natural formation of limestone stacks that seem to magically rise from the Southern Ocean. There are two walkways alongside the Twelve Apostles so park your car and get a great photo.

Exploring the Ruins of Calakmul, Campeche, Mexico One of the most important cities of Mayan civilization, Calakmul was once home to more than 50,000 inhabitants. Though the city’s timeline goes as far back as the Preclassic period (300 B.C. to 240 A.D.), its golden age was in the Classic period (250 A.D. to 900 A.D.), when it served as Tikal’s main rival and battled for dominance of the central Mayan area. Many visitors might focus on the 6,000 structures within the city, but it’s equally important to experience the surrounding Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, which encompasses over 723,000 hectares (292,594 acres) of protected land and wildlife. While the reserve is a paradise for bird watching, the site itself is a hotbed of stelae, or stone monuments, often in the form of a high relief sculpture, that were popular and characteristic of the Mayan civilization. So far, 117 stelae have been discovered at Calakmul, more than any other Mayan site, and all of them from the Classic period.

Paddleboarding in Bora Bora, Tahiti Known as a luxurious honeymoon destination, few locales offer the bright blues and calm disposition of Bora Bora’s lagoon. The flat conditions are ideal for a first-timer, and paddlers frequently spot manta rays in the lagoon, since it has visibility up to 150 feet!

Chasing Waterfalls along Pipiwai Trail, Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii Along the Hana Highway (or Road to Hana as it is commonly called) there are countless picturesque spots, including Mokulau and Honomanu Bay. On the southeastern side of Maui, just off Route 330, visitors will find the Pools of Oheo, commonly known as the Seven Sacred Pools. One of the most popular attractions in East Maui, the gulch is a string of pools and waterfalls that are easily accessed for swimming, cliff jumping and peoplewatching. While the Seven Sacred Pools is beautiful, continuing on the Pipiwai Trail for 1.8 miles into Haleakala National Park is truly rewarding. First, you’ll come across the Falls at Makahiku, which plunge almost 200 feet (60 meters). If you continue on, the hike culminates at Waimoku Falls, which drops more than 400 feet (121 meters) above you. The trail is maintained by National Park Service, so it is relatively well-traversed and you will most likely pass other people while on the hike.

We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same. Carlos Castenda
