Fallen

Heroes Interview by Sarah G. Mason

5k

For some, war movies like Lone Survivor aren’t a work of fiction – they’re reality. Such is the case with University of Florida alumnus James Suh, a US Navy SEAL who died in an Eastern Afghanistan mission and to whom – among others – the annual Fallen Heroes 5k is dedicated.

“James Suh passed away during a really risky mission in Afghanistan; he was killed trying to rescue four other soldiers,” said Laura Gutsche, intern at the Gainesville Fisher House Foundation. “After he passed away, the NROTC members decided to come together and make a race dedicated to him and one other soldier who died. The Fallen Heroes 5k is a way to remember him and the other veterans.” This year, the Gainesville community gathered around Lake Alice to participate in the race and support our veterans and their families. The event came complete with t-shirts, a salute to the flag and Gator Dominoes pizza, but the participants and supporters didn’t just come for the food. “The cause of the Gainesville Fischer House really spoke to me because I have a brother in the Navy,” said Gutsche. “Fisher House provides free housing for veterans who are wounded or who are going through traumatic war-related injuries. Their families get to be by the veteran’s side during their recovery. Money from the 5k will go towards the UDT-SEAL Association and also toward the Gainesville Fisher House Foundation.” The Fallen Heroes 5k brought in money that’s much needed on all fronts. Currently under construction, the Gainesville Fisher House Foundation will serve approximately 750 families a year once completed. With so many to care for, every penny counts. “If you want to donate, we have a wish list on our website where you can go and pick what you’d like to give,” said Gutsche. “We need a wide range of items from simple things like toothbrushes to things like silverware. Keeping the house open will be a community effort and it won’t just end when construction ends; there will be continuing needs.” If you’d like to show your support for our veterans and their families, visit gainesvillefisherhouse.org and make a contribution today. 6

at the Draft

Several Florida Gators hope to hear their names called between the endless clatter about this year’s deep crop of quarterbacks.

8

The 2014 NFL Draft’s opening round begins May 8, followed by Rounds 2 and 3 on May 9 and the final four rounds on May 10. At least four former Gators, all defensive players, could come off the board in the first two days.

Fellow juniors Loucheiz Purifoy (cornerback) and Dominique Easley (defensive end) are also penciled in as second rounders by draft pundits. Senior cornerback Jaylen Watkins’ laser-timed 4.41 seconds in the 40 at the NFL Combine turned heads, vaulting him from free agent status to a potential second or third-rounder by CBSSports.com.

Cornerback Marcus Roberson is UF’s only potential first-rounder, according to FFToolBox.com’s Ricky Dimon, who predicts the junior will be the No. 30 pick by the San Francisco 49ers. However, the consensus project Roberson as a second-rounder after he had a disappointing bench press (eight reps of 225 pounds) and 40 time (4.65 seconds) at the NFL Combine.

After those four, the rest of Florida’s players are receiving mixed reviews. Despite a high number of draft-eligible players, the volume likely won’t yield a high number of selections. The Gators had a school-record 10 drafted in 1978 and nine each in 1992, 2007 and 2009, but their most talented prospects happen to play at positions that are deeper than usual in this year’s draft class.

WalterFootball.com’s Charlie Campbell believes Roberson’s 11 tackles and three pass break-ups in 2013 are deceiving because he played throughout the season with a PCL strain. He calls Roberson a second-day “steal” for whichever team selects him.

Outside linebacker Ronald Powell is the biggest mystery for most because of an injury-riddled career after entering college as the No. 1 prospect in the country. Despite impressing at the combine, most project the junior as a third-day selection.

Another UF player to watch is senior Jonotthan Harrison, who has not been one of the flashier names tossed around despite being one of the top centers in the draft. Whether he’s drafted or signs as a free agent, Harrison has the skills to earn a starting job early in his career. Much of the draft debate will be on quarterbacks Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater and Johnny Manziel. An average of 12 quarterbacks are drafted each year, but thanks to those three and others, most are taking the “over” this year. As for other things to watch, Flourish has crunched data from various sources – that will continue changing daily and hourly leading up to the first pick – to compile lists of the Top 5 Gators, Top 5 SEC players and Top 5 overall projections to watch during this year’s draft.

BASEBALL For the second time in three seasons, the Gators completed a three-game sweep of then-No. 1 Florida State with an 8-0 win on April 8. It was UF’s first shutout against its rivals in two decades. No. 25 Florida was 21-12 overall and 7-5 in SEC play heading into a key series at No. 5 South Carolina.

BASKETBALL Florida finally got over the Elite Eight hump, only to lose 63-53 against eventual national champ Connecticut in the Final Four. The No. 1 overall seeded Gators rode a 30-game winning streak into the game that ended the careers of seniors Casey Prather, Scottie Wilbekin (The Rock School), Will Yeguete and Patric Young. A No. 7 seed, UConn defeated eighth-seeded Kentucky for the national title. Florida,w which was No. 3 in the final national poll, beat Kentucky three times during the season. UF women’s basketball team finished with a 20-13 record after a loss at Penn State in the second round of the NCAA tourney. Seniors Jaterra Bonds (PK Yonge) and Lily Svete wrapped up their careers with a fourth 20-win season. Both played in 137 games, the most in UF history.

GOLF Junior JD Tomlinson (Oak Hall) scored consecutive 70’s to tie for fifth at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in West Point, Miss., on April 8. Tomlinson’s third top-5 finish ended the regular season. The Gators were scheduled to play in the SEC 10 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

Championship from April 25-27 in St. Simons Island, Ga. For the No. 16 UF women, junior Camilla Hedberg tied for third to lead a ninth-place team finish at the 2014 Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C. on March 30. The women’s SEC tournament was April 18-20 in Birmingham, Ala.

GYMNASTICS The defending national champs earned the top seed for this year’s NCAA Championship, which was set for April 18-20 in Birmingham. After winning its regional, Florida was slated for Semifinal II, which also consisted of Alabama, UCLA, Nebraska, Penn State and Utah. The top three teams from each semifinal advance to the NCAA Super Six on April 19.

LACROSSE Florida was ranked among the top 5 in a pair of national polls after winning 13 of its first 15 matches of the 2014 season. They were set to host Vanderbilt on senior day on April 13. The team’s lone two seniors – Cara Canington and Krista Grabher — were scheduled to play their final home match on April 13.

SOCCER A short spring schedule culminated with Florida’s 1-all tie against Florida State at home on April 4. Savannah Jordan scored the Gators’ lone goal against FSU and scored five of the team’s 10 total goals in five spring matches. That included three goals in a 5-1 win against Tampa in the Feb. 15 spring opener.

SWIMMING Third place was UF men’s best finish at the NCAA Championship in 23 years. Marcin Cieslak earned high point of the meet to lead the Gators to 387 points, their all-time highest total in NCAA Championships. Florida won a pair of national titles and swam to seven school records.

TENNIS The No. 11 Florida women were 17-4 overall and 9-2 in the SEC entering a home match against No. 5 Vanderbilt on April 11. After defeating Ole Miss 4-1 to wrap up the 2014 home slate, the No. 15 UF men’s team was 12-7 and 7-3 in SEC play heading into road matches at Vanderbilt and Kentucky to wrap up the regular season. The women’s SEC Tournament was set for April 16-20 in Columbia, Mo. while the men’s tourney was scheduled for the same dates in Nashville, Tenn.

TRACK & FIELD Fireworks finished off the three-day Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville on April 5. Florida’s women and men set school records in the 4x4, with the men recording the second fastest time in collegiate history. Gino Hall went from third to first during the final leg, edging out former Gator Kerron Clement by .03 for the win. Both the men’s and women’s 4x4 times were the fastest in the world this year. PK Yonge primed for postseason run

HARD

Knocks PK Yonge’s players are tired of just “knocking on the door.” Bats in hand, they’re ready to bust the door down to finally make the coveted Final Four. “It’s time,” said PK Yonge coach Paul Silverman. Silverman has watched the Blue Wave inch closer in each of his past seven seasons as head coach. It was knocked out of the regional quarterfinals four straight seasons and then the regional semifinals in 2011. PK’s past two seasons ended in the regional finals – just shy of a trip to the Final Four. This year’s 4A semifinals and finals are May 7-8 in Vero Beach. Like Silverman said, now it’s time. Seniors Sara Hendrix, Kassidy Kennard, Kalen McGill and Taylor Knight have the experience and leadership. Add in several skilled underclassmen – many with big-game experience, too – and the Blue Wave will roll into the postseason with perhaps its most lethal lineup ever. “We’ve knocked on the door for several years but just haven’t quite gotten over the hump,” Silverman said. “This year we hopefully will get over the hump and make it all the way to the Final Four.” PK Yonge was well on its way to winning a fifth consecutive district championship with a 10-0 record at press time and has been Miracle Sports’ top ranked 4A team for most of the season. MaxPreps’ computers even tabbed the Blue Wave as the nation’s No. 1 team in early March. 12 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

By Mike Capshaw

It all begins with McGill, a dominating pitcher and clean-up hitter who has signed with South Alabama. McGill benefits from a rangy and stingy defense that’s anchored up the middle by Hendrix at second and Kennard at shortstop. Kennard is “very valuable” because of her versatility as she’s played every position except pitcher. Hendrix is among the best leadoff batters around, leading the area in stolen bases. “She makes us go,” Silverman said. “When she gets on (base), we usually can score.” Knight gives the team a fourth senior leader on the infield at first base while third base, known as the “hot corner” in softball, is manned by junior Nikki Santiago. The youngest infielder may be the most talented in sophomore catcher Kaitlyn Burke. She hits for power and average, but is much more than offense only. “She’s the best defensive catcher in the area, and maybe the entire state,” Silverman said. “She is being recruited by many D-I colleges.” The outfield is patrolled by junior Garland Evans in center and sophomore Nikkia Robinson in right. Evans bats second and is “outstanding” defensively as is Robinson, who also serves as backup pitcher. Sophomore Kathryn Butts and freshman Callen DeLucas split time in left field.

PK Yonge opened the season with 16 consecutive wins before going 2-2 against “the best of the best” at the Kissimmee Klassic over spring break. After opening with a narrow 5-4 loss against defending 4A state champ Gulliver Prep, the Blue Wave defeated Canterbury (No. 1 in 2A) and Niceville (No. 8 in 7A). McGill was injured in one of the wins, so she didn’t pitch in the finale, a loss against Tate (No. 4 in 7A). Coaches don’t learn much about their team during blowouts, so it was crucial to have a few weaknesses exposed – even if the losses stung a bit initially. “The girls were down. They’re just not used to (losing) after so much success,” Silverman said. “They are competitors and we talked about how we can use this as a spring board … those losses can absolutely help us in the long run.” Silverman hopes that means a deep postseason run. No matter how it ends – even if it’s just knocking on the Final Four door again – Silverman won’t forget this group. “A lot of them have been with us since the sixth or seventh grade,” Silverman said. “These seniors, they’ve been special. They’ve really bought in. The chemistry on this team has been really good. “Win or lose, it really has been a pleasure coaching this group.”

Education By Ginger Henderson

Life

Can You Dig It?

Summer’s almost here and the kids are ready for a vacation. So ready in fact, they’ve checked out a bit early. Half-finished homework, falling grades and poor motivation mark the end of the school year, but these habits don’t have to take root in your home. Try these tricks to keep the learning alive until sweet summer arrives at last.

Last month, the Florida Museum of Natural History hosted an in-depth “Can You Dig It? ” workshop that focused on geology and the wonders of the world beneath your feet. Kids were able to transform their classroom teachings into a meaningful learning experience as they studied rocks, experimented with Earth’s layers and participated in mini excavations.

Branch out for a more in-depth experience Find a real world connection Stay up to date on the topic at hand If your child’s teacher sends home a weekly newsletter or class syllabus, take note of the lessons that have been planned. If you’re left without any idea of what your child is doing during their days at school, email the teacher and ask for a quick rundown. Once you have the information at your fingertips, you’re ready to take action and bring these lessons to life. 18 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

All too often, kids can’t see how the things they learn today will benefit them in the future. Create a bridge to meaningful learning by pointing out these connections. Show them how you use math at the grocery to find the best deals and estimate the total. Point out how you know that cumulonimbus clouds mean rain, signaling you to stay indoors, while cirrus clouds are “safe,” meaning you can head out to the park as planned. Once your child sees the purpose for their lessons, they are more likely to retain the information.

Look for ways to experience hands-on learning with your child. For example, plant a small garden together. Your child can gain technological, reading and research experience by using the computer to search for native plants and learning about ways to care for your garden. Plotting the garden brings math skills into practice. Planting and watching seeds grow brings discussions on plant parts and functions, germination and life cycles. As you wait for your plants to mature, create graphs, charts and tables to collect data and visually track their progress. Discuss healthy food choices and the importance of a healthy diet. The list of educational topics stretches as far as the imagination.

Most of us look forward to summer vacation all year long, and many families spend much of their time outdoors picnicking at the park, biking, hiking, camping and enjoying time at the beach or pool. It’s important to talk about safety and set guidelines that will ensure everyone has a great time! These easy tips will keep your tots safe and healthy while on summer vacation.

Safety Tips

By Kelly McConnell, Princelionheart.com Protect skin. Your baby’s perfect skin is a natural target for the sun’s intense rays, so cover them up and keep them out of direct sunshine. For little ones, use a SnoozeShade to create complete coverage over your stroller. SnoozeShade blocks up to 97.5 percent of the sun’s UV rays and keeps your baby safe and comfortable. If your child is older, apply 50+ sunscreen and dress them in a sun shirt and add a hat when they are not in the water. Re-apply sunscreen multiple times throughout the day when they have been swimming or sweating. 20 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

Sun & Water Fun

Take breaks.

FOR SUMMER Protect eyes.

Plan for your child to take frequent breaks from the heat, sun and water. Break time should include snacks and drinks, preferably water. Dehydration settles in quickly and could result in sun or heat sickness. Schedule times for you and your little ones to sit in the shade, re-apply sunscreen, have a snack and drink plenty of water. Keep an eye on their cheeks; if they start to look flushed, it’s time to get out of the sun.

Use sunglasses to protect babies’ eyes. A baby who constantly has the sun in their eyes will be fussy and risks eye injury, so purchase a pair of sunglasses with a strap. Position your child throughout the day to keep them from sitting in direct sunlight. Encourage older children to wear sunglasses when they aren’t in the water. They won’t have to squint as much, and will be able to play outside longer.

Avoid the strongest hours of the day.

Be attentive.

The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Avoid having your baby in direct sunlight during those hours of the day.

Never turn your back on your child in the water. It doesn’t matter how good of a swimmer your child is or how shallow the water; accidents happen. If you cannot tend to all of your children, bring a sitter, friend or

relative with you. If your child cannot swim at all, you should be in the water with them. If they are swimmers, be near the edge. Even in a pool where there are lifeguards watching, you should be the primary eyes on your child.

Follow the rules. Make sure your child knows the pool and beach rules. Help them understand where they can dive and where they shouldn’t, how to stand in lines for diving boards and where the deep water

begins. Set boundaries for where they can and cannot go. Show them the bathroom and where your stuff is. Set a meeting place should they lose sight of you.

Invasive Species By Sarah G. Mason

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and the outdoors are calling your name. If you plan to put your green thumb to work this spring, you’re in luck. Alachua County is home to a whole host of bright flora and lush vegetation that would make any gardener swoon. However, before you start planting and transplanting, digging and sowing, are you sure your plants are safe? Invasive species are a serious problem in Gainesville and, unfortunately, gardeners unknowingly nurture the issue. Invasive plants are those that are non-native and can adversely affect your backyard habitat, invade the environment and disrupt our ecosystem. Here are a few popular baddies and their safe, non-invasive counterparts.

Invasive species: ARROWHEAD VINE

Invasive species: BOSTON SWORD FERN

Invasive species: GLOSSY PRIVET

Consider replacing with: GINGERS, JACOBINIA OR HOLLY FERN

Consider replacing with: LEATHERLEAF FERN, SOUTHERN WOODS FERN OR AUTUMN FERN

Consider replacing with: ARROWWOOD, JAPANESE PRIVET, FLORIDA ANISE

The Boston sword fern Arrowhead vine is an evergreen climbing vine that is often grown as a houseplant due to its attractive ornamental foliage. This species is known to displace native plants, including rare Florida ferns. Consider replacing arrowhead vine with gingers, jacobinia or holly fern, which have similar growth habits but will not disrupt the ecosystem. 28 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

was included on the Florida Exotic Pest Council’s “1995 List of Florida’s Most Invasive Species” in Category I, which means that it is significantly disrupting native plant communities in Florida. While there are many potential substitutions for the Boston sword fern, the autumn fern is a great choice; drought resistant, it is a labor saver in courtyards and atriums and can be used to cover barren spots in shaded gardens.

Glossy Privet is capable of invading natural areas such as floodplain forests and woodlands. Though dainty white flowers and shiny leaves make this plant attractive, it has an aggressive nature and will out compete other desirable plants. Instead, plant similar species such as arrowwood, hich is alike in size and color.

Navigating the ins and outs of homeowners insurance can be tricky. Are bargain deals the way to go? How much is your home truly worth? And what about all those different agencies, anyway? Here are a few tips on picking the plan that’s right for you.

By Kat Freestone

The Scoop on

Homeowners

Insurance You’re a Statistic

Know Your Home’s Value

Price Isn’t Everything

To an insurer, at least. Insurance agencies base their premiums on how “risky” you are. They’ll look at your occupation, what you own and how you live before setting the rate – or giving you insurance at all.

It’s important to establish your home’s replacement cost before you choose a policy. This will prevent you from picking a plan that’s out of sync with what you need. To find an accurate estimate, talk to a local builder.

Bargain deals aren’t always optimal – you’ll regret a low price if an insurer takes ages to service your claim. When picking a plan, look at the insurer’s record for claims service and their financial stability.

Insurers Aren’t All Alike

Ask for Discounts

Preparation is Key

As with most things in life, equal products may be priced differently. Save money by doing your research and shopping by comparison.

Insurance agencies provide discounts for good, safe behavior. Don’t waste money by forgetting to ask for them!

Before you have to file a claim, keep your policy update and reread it so that there are no surprises.

Improving Home Improvement

By Ginger Henderson

What other trends are you seeing? Many people are interested in outfitting their homes with newer technology – LED lighting for example. While that’s great if you can foot the cost right now, it may be worth waiting it out a bit before moving forward with any major renovations involving technology. What we’ve seen is that allowing a bit more time can cut costs dramatically as technology ages and becomes less expensive. Let’s talk now about investments. What type of home improvements offer the best “bang for the buck” so to speak? Something we’ve seen a lot of interest in is window upgrades. Most of today’s older homes have windows that are not very energy efficient. By replacing these with new ones, homeowners can see a substantial savings in their energy costs. These windows also offer greater storm resistance, something that those of us who’ve experienced hurricane force winds understand the importance of.

It’s that time of year. A decorations are down and the same, boring old walls are back. It’s no wonder so many people begin their summers with dreams of a new look. I sat down with Bob, Daniel and Michael Sawyer, the heads of the general contracting team Hammer to get their thoughts on home improvement projects. Read on for their tips, tricks and advice on making the most of your home improvement aspirations. What are some of the most popular home improvement projects you see today’s homeowners undertaking? As far as major renovations and updates, kitchens are the most popular, although bathrooms are another hot spot for homeowners. Most people are looking for moderate updates – replacing bathtubs or installing new countertops 30 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

While we’re on the subject of kitchens and baths, have you noticed any shifts in trends in these areas? Definitely. Several years ago just about every bathroom remodel we did included a huge jetted bathtub. Now, though, most often we’re being called to remove the bathtubs and install walk-in showers. That’s interesting. Any clues as to why you’re seeing such a change? I think a lot of it has to do with aging populations. That’s something that’s always important to remember when you’re shelling out for a major renovation or remodel. Big garden tubs may be enjoyable for a while, but consider your future needs as well. What we’re finding is that many homeowners want to sort of retro-fit their homes – to make things easier for them to remain in their homes as they grow older. Walk in showers are much easier for older people to get in and out of without the risk of falls that come with large, raised tubs.

What advice can you offer homeowners who are ready to begin a home improvement project? What should they be looking for in a general contractor? Having the right contractor makes all the difference. I recommend you look for someone who doesn’t require a down payment and who allows you to hold a retainage until the job is complete. This keeps a vested interest in bringing your project to completion. Find someone you’re comfortable with – this business arrangement is actually more like a relationship, and you want someone you can trust. Look for someone who allows you to remain in control of how things are progressing with your project. The most important thing I can recommend, though, is planning. Too many homeowners rush into their project without having a clear understanding of what they really want and the associated costs. Do your research and have a plan. You should have an idea of your needs, expectations and budget before you begin. Make sure your expectations don’t overwhelm your budget – be realistic about your costs and expect that some compromise may be in order if your budget is low. Don’t forget the little things – switchplates, cabinet pulls and paint may not seem like big expenses, but they can add up quickly. Finally, remember that the cost of your remodel will be not only the price of the materials for the job but also the time, experience and expertise of the contractor.

Don’t let it end like this. Tell them I said something. Last words of Pancho Villa (1877-1923)

Avoid By Kat Freestone

We’re lucky to live in Gainesville – during the winter, engine rust and frozen breaks are two troubles we can do without. Unfortunately, the warm weather doesn’t account for all auto issues, and a trip to the shop can still pack a punch – especially if you’re assaulted with a mechanic scam. To save yourself from dolling out unnecessary dough, here are a few key car facts to keep in mind:

Spark Plug Problems Once upon a time, spark plugs didn’t last long. Today, however, it’s not uncommon to find spark plugs with a lifespan of 100,000 miles. The take away? Don’t let the mechanic talk you into early replacement unless there are serious, visual signs of damage.

Engine’s Star Treatment The scam goes like this – by adding a little “fuel treatment” liquid to the oil, your engine will run like new. While this over-the-counter product hasn’t been shown to harm an engine, it usually doesn’t help it, either. When in doubt, pass on the star treatment and do a bit more research – odds are, you don’t need it.

an Auto Scam

Say No to Synthetic Oil After a regular oil or filter change, your mechanic might brief you on the merits of synthetic oil – to which you should politely decline. Though synthetic oil won’t harm your engine, it’s a costly upgrade that’s likely unneeded.

Air Conditioning Recharge If a mechanic offers to recharge your system’s refrigerant even though your air conditioning is running fine, the answer is no. Though facing the Gainesville heat without AC may seem daunting, don’t fall for spending too much too soon. If you haven’t noticed any defects on your own, there’s no need to have this procedure done.

The Art of

Thoughtful

Words By Kat Freestone

Writing a thoughtful card isn’t easy. With dozens of birthday cards and thank you letters to send out each year, it can be difficult not to sound robotic. Luckily, with these helpful tips and a little practice, writing a heartfelt card will be a breeze. Find the Time

Don’t write the card while you’re in a rush – the reader can tell. Instead, find a quiet time when you can sit down and concentrate on what you’re writing.

Make a List Are you sending your family holiday greetings? Wishing a friend happy birthday? Before you begin writing, it can help to make a list of all the things you’d like to say. Think of words you’d use to describe the occasion, like “friendship” and “time flies.” Then, find a way to include them in your card. Example: “Happy Birthday, Rhonda! Wow, I can’t believe another year has flown by. I’m so thankful to have you as a friend and I wish you another great year to come!”

Show Your Emotions Resist the urge to write anything generic. “Happy Birthday, I hope it’s a great one!” is nice, but there’s little emotion behind the words. Similarly, for sensitive topics such as family losses or get-well-soons, it’s important to incorporate your true feelings. Example: “John, when I heard the news about your broken leg, I was utterly shocked. I hope that you are in no pain and that you heal quickly!”

A Personal Touch An easy way to make a card personal is to add a short story or special anecdote. Including a little tidbit about yourself will help connect you to the reader and make for a truly touching card. Example: “Happy Graduation, Marco! I remember the day I graduated and how excited I felt as I left for college – I’m sure you feel the same!”

Say It Aloud To avoid sounding stiff, pretend the person is in the room with you. What would you say to them? “Congratulations on the birth of your daughter” sounds a bit dull. Instead, write as if you were speaking directly to them. Example: “Oh my goodness! A new little Miller baby, I can’t believe she’s here! She’s bringing a smile to my face, even as I write this.”

Uncovering The Cason By Sarah G. Mason

Canoe

If you were to drive by Trout Pond, you may not look twice. Located in northwestern Alachua County, the lake is not unlike many others. For Bill Cason, however, these waters will always remind him of his astounding discovery. Cason is the finder of the Cason Canoe, a 16-foot, 5,000 year old Floridian dugout canoe that dates back to the Cades Pond cultural period. The canoe is largely intact with no more than 10 percent of the overall vessel missing – a structural integrity that leaves many in awe.

The craft is characterized by an upturn angled bow and stern with charring marks on its interior. These marks suggest that the interior was removed using fire, which researchers believe indicates that the canoe is from prehistoric times – such years were characterized by canoes built from single logs of pine or cypress that were hollowed by burning and then controlled with dams of wet clay. Without horses, vessels such as the Cason Canoe were the main mode of transportation for the Cades Pond people, who are thought to be predecessors of the Timucuan Indians. Canoes such as this could carry as many as 15 or 20 people at a time and were a vital tool. Since its finding, this ancient artifact has undergone extensive appraisal, restoration and preservation processes overseen by the Matheson Museum and the Florida Museum of Natural History. The Cason Canoe was first carefully vacuumed and dusted, then treated with different sealants to kill pests and prevent future cracking. Today, the canoe sits in its permanent home in the Matheson Museum where Alachua County residents can come and glimpse a little piece of our past.

Not-So-Sweet

Facts About Sugar By Kat Freestone

It’s no secret that sugar can zap your health, but do you really know all the ways it can sabotage your body and your mind? Read on to learn why sugar isn’t so sweet. Sugar is Draining You’ve heard of sugar crashes, but that’s not the only reason sugar’s making you tired. When you fill up on the sweet stuff, you’re less likely to eat the nutrients your body actually needs. A recent study by the CDC found that people who eat more sugar end up eating less essential micronutrients, causing the body to shut down.

Sugar is Depriving Take a look at what’s on your plate. White bread? Soda? A cookie? Sugar, especially in liquid form like smoothies, coffee and tea, keeps you hungry. When you eat a wellbalanced meal, your body enters a state of equilibrium and leaves you satisfied. Not only is sugar a source of empty calories, but it creates an imbalance of nutrients in your body, inviting constant hunger in your day.

Sugar is Friends with Your Enemies Sugar isn’t a stand-alone kind of additive. 34 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

Foods with high levels of sugar often contain other chemicals you don’t want in your body like preservatives, excess sodium and potentially toxic food coloring.

Sugar is Tricky Business Making nutritious choices is hard, especially since sugar is well-hidden in many so-called “health” foods. Though yogurt for breakfast is certainly healthier than a donut, a 6-ounce container of Yoplait yogurt contains nearly 7 teaspoons of added sugar. To make better choices, skim nutrition labels and look for foods with little to no added sugar, which may be hidden under names like evaporated cane juice, fruit juice concentrate, syrup and agave nectar.

Sugar is Sickening Do you feel like you’re always sick? Overconsumption of sugar may be the culprit. The USDA recommends consuming 6 grams of sugar or less per day – that’s a little over a teaspoon. However, a 2009

American Heart Association study found that most adults consume nearly 90 grams of sugar each day. All this sugar has been shown to suppress your immune system, making illness more common.

Sugar is Moody If you feel like your mood is impossible to control, take a look at your sugar consumption. When insulin is secreted to ward off excess sugar consumption, it can throw off the other hormones in your body and leave you feeling the highs and lows. When you try and quit the stuff, you’ll experience more moodiness during sugar withdrawal – yes, it’s a real condition. Sugar withdrawal symptoms include headache, fatigue and mood swings.

Though sugar is OK in moderation, it’s best if we keep this tempting sweet to a minimum.

Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers. T. S. Eliot

Unique

By Sarah G. Mason

Instead of guessing when you don’t know, ask Mom what her Mother’s Day wish would be – there’s nothing better than giving her exactly what she wants!

Mother’s Day Gifts

This Mother’s Day, she’s likely expecting chocolate, breakfast in bed and a bouquet of spring flowers – all great gifts, but all so predictable. Isn’t it time to surprise Mom with something new? This year, shake things up with Instead of these unique gift ideas: Instead of a card, frame your favorite quotes about motherhood for a long-lasting keepsake.

Instead of candy, help the kids make a customized candy jar for her to display for years to come.

cleaning and cooking for just one day, buy her a monthly maid service that she can use all year!

Instead of a gift she opens now, make her a time capsule filled with pictures, items from family vacations and more – then wait a year (or three) before letting her open it!

Instead of a trip to the spa, buy a pass for yoga, sewing, painting or cooking classes and go together.

Instead of giving her a gift, finish her to-do list – sometimes, it’s the best present a mom could ask for.

Movies To the

By Kat Freestone

LOWEST PRICES IN TOWN

ON BEST QUALITY WOOD FLOORING The popcorn, the big screen, the hush of the audience as the opening credits begin – there’s no denying it. Movies are magical. If you’d love to bring the kids along this summer for the fun but are worried about a movie theatre meltdown, you aren’t alone. Here are a few tips to ensure your next family trip to the movies isn’t a flop!

Buy Tickets In Advance Instead of waiting in line with eager, impatient kids, buy your tickets online in advance. This way, you’ll bypass the crowd and – more importantly – ensure that tickets don’t sell out.

All About Timing Avoid scheduling a visit to the movies late at night or during your child’s naptime – both of these are a recipe for disaster. Instead, it’s best to plan to go an hour or two before naptime when your child is already settling down but not yet cranky.

Pack Snacks Grapes, sliced apples and pretzels are easy, hassle-free snacks that will keep little fingers busy while the movie is running. Whatever snacks you choose, make sure they’re easily managed in the dark.

Bring a Jacket Movie theatres are known for being cold, so make sure everyone brings an extra layer to keep warm and cozy! In addition, consider bringing a pillow for a bit of extra comfort.

Avoid Snack Bar Tantrum To avoid begging and potential tears, talk to your kids beforehand about whether or not they’re allowed sweets from the snack bar. If the answer is no, steer clear of the counter and head straight to your movie to avoid temptation.

GUARANTEED!

Bathroom Trips Beforehand Take the kids to the bathroom before the movie starts – even if they don’t feel like they have to go – to make sure everyone’s still comfortable an hour in!

Take a Break If your kids are fussy, fidgety or just plain cranky, take them outside for a short break. Let them run a (quiet) lap along the theatre hallway to get the wiggles out. Most importantly, don’t feel forced to stay. If your children aren’t enjoying the movie, no matter the reason, pack on up and head home.

Does your child get the wiggles whenever it’s homework time? Many young children have trouble sitting still and concentrating, especially By Sarah G. Mason when schoolwork is the task at hand. And yet, the ability to focus is an important skill that children should practice early on. Help your child stick to a task with some simple tips.

Tricky Tasks Help Your Child Concentrate

Get rid of the squirmies first! After sitting in school all day, kids need a mental break. Burn off some of that pent up energy by playing an afterschool sport, taking a walk together or doing a few chores around the house. Moving the body stimulates the brain, and by the time you start to work, little wiggles will sit still.

Unplug to focus. There’s nothing more distracting than a noisy television or a vibrating phone when your child is trying to learn. Turn off all electronics and store them out of sight to help them concentrate.

Make a to-do list. And check things off as you go! When there’s no end in sight, homework can seem overwhelming. Make a to-do list to give your child a visual guide. Then, let them check each item off as it’s completed – it will encourage them to keep chugging along.

Zip it. It’s easy to get sidetracked with conversation, especially if your little learner is bubbling with questions. To cut out unnecessary talk, 30 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

create a few basic signals for nonverbal communication. For instance, if your child’s eyes start to wander, point to their paper to get them back on track. Or if it’s almost break time, tap your wrist to encourage a few more minutes of good work.

Take breaks. While some children may not mind long stretches of silence and concentration, most kids need a break – and that’s OK. Work for 20 minutes, then take a five minute break. Get up together, stretch, get a drink and then get back to work. Just be sure that breaks stay short, otherwise your little learner may get distracted and not want to return.

Reward, but out of sight. Let your child know that once they complete their homework, they’ll be rewarded with 30 minutes of TV time, their favorite before-dinner snack or a trip to the dog park with Mom. No matter the reward, keep it out of sight to avoid tempting distractions. With a little practice and plenty of patience, your child will learn the routine and reward of focus.

Dining out Tips for

with Babies & Toddlers

By Mike Locker, Cozy-Cover.com Come prepared. Bring activities and treats for children such as crayons and toys to help occupy their attention. In addition, avoid the grumps by packing a snack for kids to munch on while they wait for their food.

Strap children in. Rowdy children can be frustrating, and no one wants to chase toddlers though the restaurant! Bring a booster seat, borrow one from the restaurant or pack your own seat system such as the Easy Seat by CozyCover. The Easy Seat fits easily into a diaper bag and provides a safe, comfortable and secure way for your little one to sit at the “big kids” table.

Choose a kid-friendly restaurant – the louder, the better. Though you don’t always have to opt for Chuck-E-Cheese, choose restaurants where kids are welcome and will feel comfortable. Booths are the perfect place to corner your child in while also giving them enough room to play.

You’re enjoying your meal at a restaurant when suddenly a baby starts to cry – yours. Dining out with infants and toddlers is a skill developed over time, but here are a few tips to help you along the way.

Clear around your child. Ask for plastic glasses and keep sharp silverware out of reach. Babies may smack the table and toddlers will try to tip plates and cups, but the less items they can reach, the better.

Plan the meal around your toddler’s normal mealtime. If you take a child out during their naptime, you may end up with a fussy baby. By adhering to their normal routine, you’ll keep them calm and enjoyable.

Don’t dawdle. Don’t plan a leisurely dinner to sit and catch up on old times over appetizers and dessert. Be prepared to order immediately and keep things moving. Once babies and toddlers finish eating, they will be ready to go.

Go over rules ahead of time. Not many toddlers want to hear about manners during a meltdown. Review expectations with children on the way to the restaurant or before leaving home.

Copy from one, it’s plagiarism; copy from two, it’s research. Wilson Mizner

Let loose a little. Eating out should be a fun reward. Don’t chastise children about not eating their vegetables. Take a moment to compliment them on their behavior if merited and order them a treat. The more fun your child has, the more enjoyable the experience will be for everyone.

Pack an extra dose of patience for yourself. Eating out can be fun, but it can also be stressful. Set reasonable expectations and everyone will go home happy.

A week before you leave, make a “things to pack” list. As the week comes to a close, add items you may have forgotten, like sunscreen or special toys. By giving yourself enough time, you’ll ensure that essential take-alongs aren’t forgotten.

It’s always a good idea to send one parent through security first, ready and waiting to catch the kids on the other side. If you’re traveling alone, talk to your kids beforehand about what to expect. Remind each child that they’re responsible for their own bag and show them by example how to load each carryon into the x-ray machine. If you can, have an older child walk through first to help guide younger children on the other side.

When traveling, you can’t always rely on car rental agencies to provide safe, clean booster seats for toddlers. Be prepared by bringing a BubbleBum inflatable car booster seat to keep little ones safe on the road. BubbleBums are portable, lightweight and fold away in your luggage.

Let children help Allow your kids to pick out a couple of things that they really want to bring like books, electronics, crayons or travel games. Then, let your children be responsible for their travel backpacks. By involving your children in the packing process, they’ll feel more excited when it comes time to pull out their chosen goodies. Plus, letting them handle this small responsibility will give Mom and Dad a chance to direct kids safely onto trains, escalators or airplanes – hands-free!

In-route entertainment It’s time to bring out the games! Coloring books or cards will make the hours fly by. Short on space? Try traditional travel games like I-spy or the alphabet game, or better yet, make up your own!

Remember, always allot more travel time than you think you’ll need, plan ahead and enjoy the journey!

ID for Kids Be sure to have each child wear an ID bracelet with pertinent contact information on it as a safety precaution. Write personal information on the inside of the bracelet for privacy.

Ear Pain Children can be prone to ear pain during a flight. Infants often find relief from bottle feeding or sucking on a pacifier, while older children can try sucking on a lollipop or chewing gum to pop their ears.

Dr. Vivian Bucay Shares Her Story, Insight

Tell me a little about your background. My parents were born in Mexico City, but both trace their families to Europe, which makes me a mutt. I was born and raised in Texas and grew up in a time when sun protection was not the norm. On the contrary, I spent a lot of time in the sun trying to tan, which means I had a fair number of sunburns. I quit tanning around age 22, once I was in medical school and had decided on dermatology as the specialty I wanted to pursue. I have 3 daughters, ages 23, 21, and 19 and am married to a cardiologist. I have been in practice since 1991, first in Mexico City until 1999 when we relocated to San Antonio, TX. A large part of my practice is dedicated to cosmetic dermatology, but I enjoy seeing medical dermatology as well. My personal philosophy is that "health and beauty are not mutually exclusive." This has become all the more so since my own personal battle with stage 4 melanoma from May 2006 through August 2007. Of course, I get checkups at least once a year and will do so indefinitely. A big takeaway for me has been a commitment to educate and thus empower patients to take charge of their own health.

When a Dermatologist

Learns the Worst Ever since dermatologist Vivian Bucay, MD, was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, she’s been committed to educating and empowering patients to take charge of their own health. Today, Bucay shares skin cancer warning signs, gives tips on how to stay protected, and leaves us with a powerful message: Health and beauty are not mutually exclusive.

22 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

As a dermatologist, you must have been surprised to learn that you yourself had melanoma - did you ever see any red ags, or was it a complete surprise? I had noticed some dryness inside my belly button for a few weeks and thought it was odd. Although I couldn't find anything when I checked the area, I decided to take a skin biopsy out of pure curiosity, thinking that perhaps I had eczema or psoriasis. A diagnosis of melanoma caught me by complete surprise

A consensus means that everyone agrees to say collectively what no one believes individually. Abba Eban

Do you think most people who have skin cancer realize immediately what it is? Most of the patients I see with skin cancer come to see me because they have noticed something new appear on their skin, but unless they have had skin cancer in the past, they usually do not know that they have skin cancer. There are many different types of skin cancer, and they do not all look the same.

Skin cancer comes in all shapes and sizes, so what should you look for? How often would you recommend individuals examine themselves? Everyone should get to know their skin and establish what is their "normal." Monthly self-exams are a good rule to follow. Reasons to see a dermatologist include a new growth that looks different from other existing skin growths, a sore that won't heal, appearance of a dark streak under a nail, or a change in an existing mole (the ABCDE's or Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter and Evolving). I advise patients to ask their hairdressers to check their scalp for them.

If you see something suspicious on your skin, what's the next step? Make an appointment with a dermatologist to have it checked. Do not rely on the internet, or what I call Dr. Google, for self-diagnosis.

What about moles or freckles that have been there a long time? Does skin cancer always move quickly or should you have these old moles checked too? Melanoma or cancerous moles are the deadliest form of skin cancer because they can spread to distant organs very quickly, even if the melanoma is very small. About 50 percent of melanomas arise in an existing mole, while the other 50 percent seem to appear "out of nowhere." It is very important to check all of the skin, including the scalp, covered areas such as the buttocks, on the feet and between the toes as well as the fingernails. Melanoma can start anywhere there are melanocytes (the cells that make melanin pigment).

What's the biggest misconception about skin cancer? There are several misconceptions, including that people with darker skin types are exempt from skin cancer. Anyone can develop skin cancer. Although people often

dismiss skin cancer (almost 100 percent curable when detected early) as a minor health issue compared to other types of cancer, they may be surprised to learn that studies have shown that individuals with a history of nonmelanoma skin cancers such as basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers, have a 53 percent higher risk of developing an internal cancer, including lung cancer, breast cancer, stomach cancer, etc. This increased risk holds up when the skin cancer has been completely removed. Patients with a history of melanoma have almost 1005 higher risk of developing an internal malignancy compared to those who have never had one.

extract also known as PLE) available as a supplement called Heliocare. What makes PLE unique is that the skin is the target organ, in other words, where the PLE works. Benefits of PLE include: (1) a reduction in the effects of UVA, UVB and infrared rays on the skin; (2) a decrease in the production of MMP's, which are enzymes that break down collagen and elastin; (3) antioxidant benefits to fight free radicals that damage the skin; and (4) enhanced DNA repair. Hats and sun protective clothing offer additional protection. HeliocareÂŽ retails for $29.99 and can be purchased at Walgreens and Rite Aid locations nationwide.

Are certain people more at risk than others? People with fair skin and light colored eyes whose skin is prone to sunburn are at higher risk than those who tan easily. Other risk factors include a history of sunburns, individuals with a family history of melanoma, a history of tanning bed use (a higher risk if tanning beds were used before age 25), and patients with a history of organ transplant who take immunosuppressive medications as well as those who take immunosuppressive medications for other diseases.

Apart from sunscreen, what other methods of skin protection do you recommend? Sunscreen use is an absolute must, and most people do not apply enough sunscreen to ensure adequate protection. I take and recommend for my patients oral supplementation with Polypodium leucotomos (a fern leaf

Skin Cancer By Sarah G. Mason

Seriously Prevalent, Seriously Preventable Skin cancer. If you aren’t one of the owners may say that their twenty percent of Americans who have it, you new bulbs protect against likely know someone who does. Over the past three UV exposure, people who decades, more people have had skin cancer than use tanning beds are still 2.5 times more likely to develop all other cancers combined. But this squamous cell carcinoma prevalent disease isn’t inevitable, (SCC) and 1.5 times more likely to not by a long shot. Who gets skin cancer?

develop basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the two most common types of skin cancer.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) This is the most common type of skin cancer. It often appears on areas of the body that are exposed to the most sun like the face, scalp, neck, hands and arms. BCC usually grows slowly and it may look like a reddish patch of dry skin that won’t heal, a flesh-colored, pearl-shaped lump, or a sore that bleeds, heals and then returns.

If you’re glancing sideways at your fair skinned friends, think again. Anyone can get skin cancer. Bob Marley, for instance, developed melanoma on his foot, which later spread and caused his death. Recently, with the passing of Homeland actor, James Rebhorn, from skin cancer it just brings it further into the headlines.

If you don’t have a choice but to be out in the sun midday, clothing is your most effective form of sun protection. Choose airy yet densely woven fabrics and cover as much skin as possible. Sunglasses and hats shouldn’t be forgotten, either – they can help prevent serious conditions like cataracts and melanoma of the eye, eyelid, face and neck.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

Though no one is invincible, skin cancer is not inevitable, either – you have the power to keep your skin safe. Fairer-skinned people do make up the majority of skin cancer cases, but no one is immune. Of the 3.5 million cases of skin cancer that are diagnosed annually in the US, over 90 percent of them are caused by the sun’s ultraviolet rays (UVR). Furthermore, this damage is cumulative – a sunburn that happened years ago still increases your risk today, and suffering even just five sunburns doubles your lifetime risk of developing skin cancer. Because of this, it’s essential that you work hard to avoid sunburns.

When used correctly, sunscreen can make a real difference, but SPF alone isn’t enough to protect against the sun’s UVB rays. For this reason, look for a product that offers “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB” protection and apply, apply, apply.

Know your body like, well, the back of your hand! Melanoma often appears in an existing mole or looks like a new mole, so it’s important that you can identify any changes in the size or shape of moles on your body. Look for a mole on the skin that is growing, changing shape or changing color; or a mole that looks scaly, oozes, itches or bleeds.

To enjoy the warmth and light of the outdoors without putting your skin at risk, stay in the shade between 10 am and 4 pm when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If you see or feel your skin redden, seek cover. Remember, a tan is never safe, not even from a tanning salon. Though tanning salon

Most importantly, check yourself once a month for any signs or symptoms of skin cancer. When skin cancer is caught early enough, it greatly reduces the risk of further complications and may even eliminate the need for intensive treatment or surgery. But what to look for? Skin cancer comes in all shapes, colors and sizes, but there are a few commonalities that should put you on high alert.

Sanity is a madness put to good uses. George Santayana

This common type of skin cancer also appears often on skin that got lots of sun like the ears, face, scalp, neck or arms. However, it can appear anywhere – even inside of the mouth. SCC often has a reddish color and can grow deeply without treatment.

Brown goes on to explain that people who truly feel connected to those whom they love are able to embrace vulnerability. In a way, they believe that vulnerability makes them beautiful. Putting yourself out there takes courage, but with little steps in the right direction we can all work towards being more authentic, more open and yes, more vulnerable. If you aren’t quite sure how to take off the mask, here are a few tips to get you started:

Be Real If you’re afraid, say you’re afraid. If you’re hurt, say you’re hurt. If you love someone, tell them you love them. If you make a mistake, say you’re sorry. Listen to your true feelings and don’t try and hide them from anyone.

Don’t Wait for Guarantees

As stated best by research professor Dr. Brené Brown in her powerful TED Talk, “Connection is why we’re here. It gives purpose and meaning to our lives.” By Sarah G. Mason

Let’s be

Vulnerable It’s no secret that feelings of love, belonging and connection are important. And yet, why do so many of us struggle with them? This is exactly the question that sparked Brown’s six-year study on the human emotions of connection, shame and vulnerability. After collecting thousands of personal stories and conducting hundreds of interviews, Brown began to see a pattern. “Shame is easily understood as the fear of disconnection,” said Brown. “Is there something about me that, if other people know or see it, that I won’t be worthy of connection?” According to Brown, when we harbor these sorts of negative thoughts, 16 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

they are connected to excruciating vulnerability. When we think, “I’m not good enough, I’m not smart enough, I’m not skinny enough,” those feelings cause us to hide our true selves and, as a result, we feel disconnected.

So what can we do to cast away our doubts and let in those feelings of love, comfort, warmth and belonging? “There was only one variable that separated those with a strong sense of love and belonging and the people who really struggle for it,” said Brown. “And that was, the people who have a strong sense of love and belonging believe they're worthy of love and belonging. That's it.”

It’s easy to wait until the situation is “perfect” before taking action. You wait to throw on a bikini until you lose those five pounds. You wait to invite your love interest on a date until you’re sure he’ll say yes. You wait to ask for a raise until your boss has hinted that you’ll get it. If you always wait for the guarantees, you’ll never fully commit to taking action. Find your courage and go for it.

Ask for Help Vulnerability is not weakness. It’s courage. Many people won’t ask for assistance because to them, it means they failed. And yet, you can’t do it all. Ask for help with the kids, ask for help at work, ask for help with personal goals, and forget about looking “weak.”

Get Rejected Rejection is hard, but it makes us stronger. It also means that you took a risk, went for something and allowed yourself to be vulnerable. Learning how to embrace rejection will enable you to find your courage.

Embrace Negative Emotions According to Brown, we can’t selectively numb emotions. When we numb ourselves to pain and fear, we also numb ourselves to joy and happiness. By embracing negative emotions as a part of life, it allows us to feel the positive emotions, too.

I was actually determined not to write another book on relationships, but something struck me and I realized that there are a set of underlying principles – we call them laws in the book – that make relationship building quite easy. For instance, in the business world, you have to follow the person, not the position. You have to build relationships with interesting, smart, ambitious, enthusiastic people in your network and stay in touch with them through their careers as opposed to saying, “Well, I want a relationship with the CEO.” That became my first law. Over time, we accumulated more of these and decided to put them all together in a book.

Can you tell me about the love lies you talk about in your book? Ah, the love lies. That’s going to cost you extra [laughs]. One is that in order to attract others, we need to be clever and appealing and smart. This is a widely held belief in both business life and personal life. The fact is that great relationships are based on great conversations, not one person showing the other how much they know. In a social situation, we’re often consumed with impressing people. You think, “I need to put my best foot forward.” While there’s nothing wrong with this, being clever and charming is actually not what people are looking for. 14 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

Love

Lies

What’s the key to having great conversation?

My wife and I know a lot of young single women in New York City, and we hear the same story over and over. These women will go out on a date with a guy, and he’ll spend two hours talking about his job. They don’t have a conversation. To me, a good conversation is one that’s back and forth. It’s one where you learn about the other person and you ask questions. I think questions are greatly underrated.

When you’re getting to know someone, are there any topics you should stay away from? You want to be authentic, but take your time. Sometimes you meet people and within 10 minutes they’ve told you their whole life story. It’s TMI. In the first 10 minutes, I don’t want to know how someone betrayed you and how your business partner ran away with all your money and so on. Be authentic, but take your time and let it slowly unfold. There’s another relationship law that deals with evoking people’s curiosity. If you dump everything on the table in the first hour, you aren’t leaving much room for the other person to say, “Hey, I’d like to learn more about you. You seem like an interesting person.”

Are there certain things you should avoid when you’re in a relationship?

Well, there are probably a lot of things you should avoid [laughs]. Going back to the love lies, one thing to avoid is saying, “Don’t try and change me. I am who I am.” That’s a very popular notion in our contemporary culture. The fact is that if you want to grow and mature, you actually need feedback from the world around you. If left to our own devices, most of us will resort to old habits and me-ism and self-centeredness. I mean, think about why we have locks on the door and police forces. If left to their own devices, people can be pretty selfish. The idea about this attitude of “just let me be who I am” is pretty ridiculous and it won’t lead to a fulfilling relationship.

Can you explain how loss of excitement isn’t necessarily a bad thing later on in a relationship? When people first fall in love, there’s an infatuation stage. We become obsessed with the other person; everyone’s experienced that feeling. There’s a certain part of the brain that’s intensely activated when you fall in love, and that lasts for about 18 months. After a few years, that rush wears off.

It is now possible for a flight attendant to get a pilot pregnant. Richard J. Ferris, President of United Airlines

But here’s the lie: Our society says, “A marriage should have all that excitement and hotness and it should last forever. It’s just not true. That 18 months of intense infatuation dies down, but another part of your brain is activated as love deepens. There are other types of rewards that you feel that have to do with a deep, calm satisfaction of being with someone who knows you and whom you trust. It’s unrealistic to think that what you experience in the first year is going to be with you for 60 years. Physically, psychologically, it doesn’t happen, but society sets us up to think that it should.

How does our society dier in that way from others? I lived abroad for 13 years. We have a very, very, very youth-obsessed culture. My wife and I lived in Italy for a number of years; you know, grandparents are very respected and revered there and they’ll often live with or near their children. It’s the same way in Japan and many other cultures. It’s considered a great honor to care for your parents. In

America, as you get older you lose everything that our culture considers valuable like your hot looks and your athleticism so it makes it tough. As a couple gets older, you no longer exemplify what society says is valuable, and that can be hard.

If there’s one piece of advice you could give to couples, what would it be? Really get to know the other person. It never ends. I’ve been married for 31 years and I’m still getting to know my wife. If you ask questions and really care about learning everything you can about the other person, it goes a long way in deepening your relationship and keeping it vibrant. Knowing when to LET

GO

By Ginger Henderson

It’s a fact of life that relationships change. As you grow and find your priorities shifting, there may come a time when the friendships you once held dear begin to fade. While the process of growing apart can be painful, knowing when to let go can bring peace of mind to a difficult decision. Your lives take you in many different directions Maybe you settled down in your hometown to raise a family while your friend moved away to chase her dreams. Or maybe she stayed close to home while you found love with a man hundreds of miles away. While distance sometimes makes the heart grow fonder, that’s not always the case. What you once thought was an inseparable bond begins to feel more strained with each phone call or visit. As your lives change, you often change as well. You may find that your interests no longer line up, and that’s okay. While you will always share a common history and countless memories, it’s perfectly healthy to turn your focus toward building more meaningful relationships with the people surrounding you. In doing so, you’re not abandoning your friend or discounting the time you shared. You’re simply embracing the people who are most meaningful in the current stage of your life and choosing to give them the best of your time and attention.

You have drastically different parenting philosophies You believe that spanking is vital to effecting parenting while she believes it’s abusive. You prioritize family time while she believes kids should be heavily involved extracurricular activities. While it’s perfectly acceptable to have wildly different ideas on how to best raise a child, those differences of opinion can often become divisive. If it becomes exhausting to have to defend your parenting decisions or you feel as though your methods are too often belittled, it may be time to execute a split. While maintaining distance can be, and often is, difficult, it’s an important step in validating and standing behind your parenting decisions.

you’re finalizing your divorce, or your friend may struggle finding things to talk to you about after a miscarriage or loss of a spouse. While you can remain supportive and loving toward your friend, you can also allow her to put your friendship to rest as she moves on in the next chapter of life, and vice versa. It’s been said that “breaking up is hard to do,” and that statement holds true with friendships as well. While distancing yourself from someone you’ve known and cared about for so long is painful, remind yourself that it’s for the best. By removing negativity and stress from failing friendships, you open yourself to building new, supportive relationships.

You experience drastic lifestyle changes Major life events like divorce or loss can often strain even the closest relationships. While it’s vitally important to remain supportive of your friend during such an event, it’s important to recognize the signs that the relationship is failing. It may be painful to spend time with your happily married friend while

The

Teacher deficit in America

Interview by Lauren Douglass

Half of our nation’s teachers will retire over the next decade. That’s 50 percent. And yet, only around nine percent of UF students consider teaching a worthwhile career. Here to discuss what the future looks like are National Board Certified teachers Faye Cook and Sue Creekmore from Teachers America and the Make More campaign. Sue, can you tell me about the Make More campaign?

What do you think the future looks like for education?

Make More was conceived by the TEACH coalition, a partnership between local, state and national organizations, and aims at guiding top students into a teaching career. Public education is at a real crossroads right now. There is a going to be a gap between retiring teachers and those choosing an educator career path. Teacher salaries do seem to be increasing, which is critical as there has to be a reasonable financial incentive, but college students choosing a career in teaching is dropping.

Faye: I see education as being in a state of change. Right now we have two “teacherpreneurs” working at our school. They work half a day in their regular teaching jobs, and the other half they’re working on bigger, broader projects in different fields. This gives them a chance to go beyond teaching in their four walls and have a broader impact on the profession. I think the future of teaching is going to hold more of these kinds of mixed additions.

Faye, do you think that society places a lower importance on education?

Sue: What we are looking at is almost like the change many years ago in our nation’s history where we went from an agricultural society to an industrialized society. We’re in the process of a huge change in public education. From the day I walked in and took over my first class to today, it’s a whole different world.

If we truly valued our education we wouldn’t be begging our state legislators every year for education funding. The National Board stipend has been cut, yet we have amazing research that demonstrates the expertise and increased learning gains of students who are taught by National Board teachers. They just released this current year’s data for the number of teachers who earn National Board certification in each state. Several years ago, Florida was at the same level as North Carolina. This year Florida had a total of only 36 new NBCT’s, while North Carolina had over 300. We know that NBCT’s outperform non-certified teachers — the data has shown that repeatedly — yet the national government doesn’t have the push from the state or local government to get our teachers on through that program. 10 Flourish Magazine | May/2014

Sue, what worldly additions have you seen that you think could help benefit our society? I think if we could just find some kind of happy medium between what we’re doing and what Asia is doing, our children would benefit greatly. I was sent to be a Fulbright scholar in Japan a few years ago. I spent three weeks studying their school system, going to their universities, and just having interesting and amazing conversations with their top educators and students. I saw that Japan is trying to move away from only emphasizing education – they want more well-rounded children. I think we also need to find that happy medium.

If a person is interested in making a career change into teaching, what steps should they take? Sue: They should involve themselves in local education that’s available. Before I was a teacher, I sat in at the local elementary school once a week just to watch. It was extremely rewarding for me, and was good to have a basic understanding of what to expect from a job in teaching. Faye: I agree. Teaching isn’t a job for everyone. There are some people who are absolutely not cut out for it. I read an interesting blog post a few days ago that was written by a man who truly was a rocket scientist. When they had cutbacks at NASA because of the elimination of the space shuttle, he decided to take a teaching job. He found out that teaching truly was harder than being a rocket scientist. In his job, there were teams of people dedicated to solving one problem at a time. When he got into the classroom, there was a myriad of problems all going on at the same time. Teaching is demanding; it takes a lot of intellectual capacity to make the day-to-day decisions.

Faye, what have you gained from teaching? Teaching is a job that’s overwhelmingly rewarding. Maybe not every day, because there are some frustrations, but overall this profession allows you to make a difference. We aren’t just molding the academics within a student, but we are molding the future of this country by our work. Visit TEACH.org to see if teaching is right for you or to learn more information.

Overcome

Public

Speaking By Michael W. Robinson

Anxiety

It’s common knowledge – some people would rather die than talk in front of a live audience. It’s estimated that 75 percent of people suffer from public speaking anxiety, but fearing public speaking can negatively affect your career and your life. After years of giving speeches myself and working with Ceremonial Speeches, I’ve learned a few essential tricks that can help even the most anxious speaker deliver a great and gracious speech. These nine key points will help you communicate better and transform your ideas into action. Nothing rivals the power of a great speech.

Know the topic. To come off polished and professional, familiarize yourself with the subject and material. Familiarity breeds comfort and security during your presentation.

Know the Speech.

Practice your speech.

No Apologies!

In front of someone or in front of a mirror, you notice your facial expressions, gestures and breathing. Be aware of any nervousness and work to erase negative body-language.

Don’t apologize to the audience for audio, visual or other equipment failure, for sounding nervous, for the bad weather, for having a cough… No apologies for anything.

Know Your Audience.

Tell A Story.

Who is the audience? Students? Professionals? Delivery depends on whether it’s an audience of your career peers or mostly senior citizens.

A memorable story will turn a good speech into a great speech. Your experience will provide a good story. Choose one that is appropriate, clean and not too long.

Be Properly Introduced.

Be Gracious.

Write your speech introduction for the introducer. Make it short and amusing. Include your education, professional accomplishments and something about the talk.

Acknowledge the hosting organization and the role it plays in society. Also, mention the person who introduced you, or others if you wish. Come across serene and noble.

Nothing is wrong with California that a rise in the ocean level wouldn’t cure. Ross MacDonald

Glancing at notes is OK, but you should really know your speech and material inside and out. This comes from practice. Knowing your speech gives you confidence, which gives you the aura of an expert. The speech is you. Know your presentation as you know yourself.

Have a Sense of Direction. Public speaking is a timeless and influential art. Know where you’re going with the speech; no babble or making up stuff on the fly. The opening should bring in the audience and set the pace, and the body needs to provide the meat of the speech. In the conclusion, tell the attendees what to do. Leave them with a remarkable story that brings together the entire speech. Flourish Magazine | May/2014 11

Whether telecommuting or self-employed, many people today are taking advantage of home offices. According to U.S. Census data, 13.4 million people telecommute at least one day a week, while data collected by the IRS shows a whopping growth of 10.7 million people who declare themselves self-employed. While a home office isn’t necessarily a “must-have” for those who work from home, the benefits of a dedicated working space can’t be denied.

By Ginger Henderson Whether you’re setting up your home office for the first time or looking to update your space, first and foremost, you must respect the room. This goes for your children, your husband and also yourself. Post a note on your office door when you’re working and don’t wish to be disturbed, and be sure that your husband and children respect your working hours. While it can be tempting for them to interrupt you, explain that you’ll save time and return to them more quickly if you can finish your work uninterrupted. The same goes for your time in your office. Don’t use your office for other purposes – this is not the place to work on your scrapbooking or catch up on your Netflix queue. Once you’ve established your office as a work-only space, it’s time to gather all the right equipment. You should have a wide desk that provides ample space for work. Your computer

should be updated with the latest anti-virus software and again, should be devoted to office work only. That way there’s no worry that the latest Facebook virus will wipe out all your hard work. Choose a comfortable desk chair with solid back support, and be sure you have plenty of storage area for filing important documents and receipts. This will save you from digging through piles of paper come tax time. Make a list of the office supplies you’ll need like scissors, a stapler and sticky notes, and purchase a second set to be dedicated for your office. This will keep you from having to leave and help you move through your tasks more quickly. No matter how you choose to run your home office, the key is remembering your professionalism. Even if you have the luxury of teleconferencing in your pajamas, when you respect your business you’ll always be taken as a professional.

Beating the

Stress of Summer For months, we look forward to summer; a season known for being fun and frenzied. We rush around, trying to squeeze vacations and beach days around our responsibilities. However, afterwards we’re exhausted from trying to do it all. Image consultant Marla Tomazin has a few tips to share that will not only help prevent the stress of the season, but allow you to make the most of it.

Plan ahead in several key ways First, make sure to mark events on your calendar as soon as you know about them. This will help you avoid being caught by surprise when suddenly barbecues, parties and parades pop up. This way, you’ll be able to enjoy seasonal events instead of just getting through them.

Outline Your Goals for Summer Everyone has big hopes and goals for the summer, but – even if you’re an amazing multi-tasker – focusing on them all can be tough. It’s good to sit down ahead of time and write out all the ways you hope to use these sunny days, from taking a wellearned trip, to spending time with family, to maintaining your health. After you make your list, decide which goals are the most 6

Flourish Magazine | May/2014

important. Having a plan is the easiest way to hone in on all of those fun summer activities you don’t want to miss!

Let Yourself Off The Hook To save your sanity, realize that your summer might not be picture-perfect. This is okay. Don’t beat yourself up. Keep your focus on what’s really important, and you’ll be less tense and hurried. She urges us to remember that, although we hate to let others down, sometimes we have to forgive ourselves for having to miss a friend’s wedding in order to make it to a family reunion. It’s important to take control by not taking on too much.

Don’t Forget About Yourself Spending time on yourself is just as important as taking care of others. She

advises us to take care of our health, which includes getting some light exercise, drinking lots of water (especially in the heat), and getting enough sleep. In order to relax, try giving back to yourself. Take the time between playdates and planning to sit down and enjoy a cool iced tea by the pool or hire a babysitter and enjoy a worry-free night out.

Ultimately, you don’t have to completely overhaul the way you approach summer and vacations to savor the upcoming season. By simply planning ahead, spending time for yourself, and not panicking about being perfect, you can better cherish the moments with the people you love. This way, summertime can once again be filled with warmth, joy and fun.
