Switch Light Bulbs By switching from old-fashioned, energy-guzzling bulbs to the new, compact fluorescent lights, you’ll save both energy and money. If every household in the US changed just one of its regular bulbs to a fluorescent one, it would be equivalent to removing one million cars (and their emissions) from the road.

Turn Computer Off Especially at night, power your computer down instead of letting it rest in sleep mode. You’ll save 40 watt-hours per day, or about $14 per year.

Skip the Rinse Many of us rinse our dishes in the sink before loading them into the dishwasher.

While it may seem like a necessary step if you want crystal clean dishes, really it’s a big a waste. To save on time, energy and water, pick one or the other. You’ll reduce your water usage by 20 gallons each load!

Don’t Pre-Heat With the exception of bakery items, there’s no need to pre-heat the oven before use. Instead, simply turn the oven on at the same time you put the dish in.

Also, instead of opening the oven door to check on a baking meal, use the oven window instead. An oven’s temperature drops about 25 degrees when you open the door, which leads to inefficient heating and unnecessary energy spent.

Meatless Mondays Going vegetarian once a week will help preserve our planet. The amount of water it takes to produce a pound of beef is astronomical: 2,500 gallons, according to water conservationists – yes, for one pound! A small change in your meal plans can make a big difference.

Q. Within a week of having a reaction to a bee sting (the skin was hot, red, swollen and blistered), the tremors in my right hand and jaw disappeared. I’d had them for three years and had just gotten a referral to see a neurologist.

My mother and her mother had Parkinson’s disease, so I suspect that is where I was headed, though I hadn’t been officially diagnosed. Have you heard of this before?

A. There may be scientific support for your response to bee venom. We were somewhat surprised to discover research demonstrating that bee-venom injections have benefit against Parkinson’s disease (Parkinsonism and Related Disorders, September 2012).

The Michael J. Fox Foundation funded a study of bee-venom therapy in a mouse model of Parkinson’s. The results were positive. French researchers are currently recruiting subjects for a clinical trial (MIREILLE) to assess the value of bee venom in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Q. I understand that no one would want to eat or drink dark cocoa. It is bitter and dry.

I add about 1/2 teaspoon of Hershey’s natural unsweetened cocoa to my half-cup of coffee every morning. Milk and a touch of agave nectar make it even more palatable. This tastes like mocha and offers chocolate benefits without extra sugar or fat.

A. Cocoa flavonoids found in dark cocoa can reduce inflammation, improve the ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure. They also make blood platelets less likely to clump together and form a blood clot, perhaps lowering the risk of a heart attack.

Although all these benefits have been established in studies, many health experts worry that people will overdose on candy. Your solution is a good way to get cocoa flavonoids.

Q. I have used a bar of soap under the bedsheets for the past nine months or so to get rid of leg cramps. I change the bar every three months.

Recently, I used a bar of Dove soap instead of the Dial I had been using. My husband and I both experienced leg cramps again.

Is there a reason why Dove soap doesn’t work although Dial does?

A. We don’t know why soap under the bottom sheet helps some people avoid leg cramps. One hypothesis suggests that the fragrance is key.

Popular folklore claims that Dial beats out Dove when it comes to preventing leg

cramps. Perhaps that’s because Dove is not real soap, but rather a synthetic detergent bar.

Q. My husband suffered from frequent canker sores for years. I read in your column that eating kiwi fruit might help prevent canker sores.

When I passed it along to him, he was extremely skeptical, to say the least. He still decided that it couldn’t hurt to try.

After getting on a regimen of eating one kiwi fruit every other day for breakfast, the canker sores stopped completely! On the rare occasions when he can’t eat kiwis for an extended period because of travel, a sore starts up. Eating kiwis for a few days straight heals it up very quickly. This might not work for everyone, but it certainly helped him.

A. Others report that kiwi fruit is helpful against canker sores.

Breaking bad habits isn’t just about cleaning up your diet and getting off the couch. It’s a lifestyle change that you’ll carry with you for years to come.

Some bad habits that may be hampering weight loss include eating in front of the TV, dining out often (yes, even if you order salads!), skimping on sleep, having a disorganized kitchen and living in stress. Your daily routines affect your overall wellbeing, so as you evaluate your bikini body goals, consider more than just diet and exercise.

Introduce Veggies As a kid, eating veggies was a chore. Today, let’s admit it – not much has changed. Though vegetables are often ignored, they’re essential to a happy, healthy body. There’s a wealth of research to show that increased vegetable consumption is tied to increased weight loss and overall wellbeing. Hate the idea of raw broccoli and boring salads? Try sneaking veggies into your daily diet by adding them to smoothies or sautéing them with breakfast!

Summer is upon us, which means blue skies, flip-flops and yes – beach days! The key to feeling great in a bikini this year is simple: healthy goals, active bodies and happy confidence!

Know your style Do you hate sweating? Find gyms boring? Then running in the heat or hitting the weights probably aren’t the right activities for you. No matter your preferences, it’s important to pin down your individual style and pick activities that fulfill your likes. Instead of running in the heat, consider swimming.

Instead of exercising at the gym, take up rock climbing or tennis.

When you engage in activities you truly enjoy, staying fit and active will feel effortless.

Insist on clean eating Nothing will derail your bikini body efforts faster than a bag of potato chips or a heaping pile of ice cream. Pick one day a week as a “cheat day” if you can’t live without these tantalizing treats, but otherwise stay firm on your clean eating resolutions. Cut back on processed foods and amp up fresh produce. Craving something sweet? Reach for fruit instead!

Not a moment to waste Got a few minutes to spare? Use that time wisely! Here’s an easy at-home exercise that doesn’t require weights or fancy gym equipment: Warm up with jumping jacks; 20 seconds of work, 10 seconds of rest for 4 minutes. Next, side kick! Squat, then kick your right let out to the side as you rise up; switch sides every 30 seconds. Last, pushups; try to do 10 every minute for 3 minutes. Cool down by marching in place, and don’t forget your post-exercise stretch!

Ignore the critics Feeling good in a bikini is about more than how you look – it’s about how you feel, too. Never spend a second wondering what others might think. Learn to love yourself and you’ll gain the confidence you need to feel amazing, no matter what you’re wearing.

Jenna Torres A single mom with a message: It’s never too late to follow your dreams. Having just released her album A Woman’s Touch, Torres inspires us with both her music and her story.

Today, Torres talks with me about the challenges of being a single mom, the changes she’s had to make and the importance of never giving up on your dreams.

Tell me a little bit about who you are and what’s led you to this point in your life.

I’m a singer-songwriter from New York City, and I’m also a single mom which I think is an important aspect of who I am. I’ve just finished recording an album that was recently released, so this is a really exciting time for me.

I’ve been making music for years, but in the process of becoming a single mom I’ve taken a circuitous route to get to where I am today.

When my daughter was about 10 years old, I had the opportunity to be signed as a songwriter. That was a pretty amazing opportunity for me, especially because at the time I’d gotten away from music and was trying to support myself in the real world – sometimes being a creative artist doesn’t feel so real [laughs]. I was deeply fortunate that I made a record and ended up getting signed as a songwriter.

What kind of audience is your music geared towards?

The name of my record is A Woman’s Touch, and the record was born out of my experience as a woman who’s been through a lot. This is a women’s record and it really speaks about my experiences with love and loss and the joy of overcoming adversity. My music is country with a bit of a rock edge, so people who grew up listening to rock will enjoy it, though there is some deeply heartfelt material as well.

A in her heart Interview by Lauren Douglass Tell me about the album release – I’d imagine it’s a very personal process. Are you nervous about putting it out there?

I am, actually. I feel like I’m walking farther out on limb than I ever have before because this material is very personal. It feels like a huge risk, but I was thinking when I found out that a magazine called Flourish wants to interview me, the risks that I’m taking now make me feel like I’m flourishing. I’m here to say that the greater the risk, the more alive I seem to feel. It makes me want to get up and chase my dreams. I’m definitely a dream chaser.

Even if I don’t realize them, there’s still a value in pursuing them.

As a single mom, what are some of the challenges you’ve faced?

I’ve had to choreograph my life so that my daughter’s needs – which always come first – are met. It’s like a dance. I feel like there are days when it’s much harder to balance it all. I get distracted by her needs. When your child is sick or there’s a problem, it becomes difficult to focus on the other things I need to accomplish to reach my own goals. The trouble comes when your child needs you to give more time and energy than you have, but at the same time you have no option – you have to come up with the time and energy that they need.

Why is it important for women to pursue their dreams even after they have children?

In my case, I had to put my dreams away because I felt like they interfered with my ability to nurture my child. Secretly, my hope was that they’d be waiting for me when the time was

right. I think this is the case with many women.

We do surrender and put away our personal dreams to make way for our children, but the magic of raising a child is that they do grow up.

Their independence creates space that you can fill up with your dreams again. The most exciting thing that I discovered was that I still had dreams and they were just waiting for me to embrace them again. The framework of society is not as accepting of women when they get older, so my hope is that we can forge a path for women who realize their dreams later in life. We have mature dreams and dreams that are so worthy of being received.

You must be pretty proud of yourself.

because going for it is as important as realizing it. Each day that passes, you don’t get back again and I’d rather spend it expressing myself in whatever way I can.

If you had just a few sentences to sum up what you’ve learned from life, what would it be?

Life is what you make it. My heart is filled with love and giving from my heart actually brings me the most joy. I give from my heart every day in every way that I can and it always comes back to me.

The gratification that comes from maturing is wonderful. I don’t necessarily want to pat myself on the back and say that I’m proud of myself, but there’s a deep satisfaction that comes from accomplishing your dreams. It’s pretty awesome.

Little children have dreams and young women have dreams and we live in a society that kind of cultivates “go chase your dreams,” then as a mother we kind of turn it over to our children and say, “OK, now it’s your turn to dream.” As a mom that’s now realizing yes, there’s still room for my dreams, it’s really fantastic.

I read a fascinating article about the state lottery system the other day. It described life in small, low-income towns and rural areas throughout the U.S.. People struggle from paycheck to paycheck, frequently encounter medical bankruptcies and almost everyone in town buys a load of lottery tickets every week.

So let’s just put all of this to an end right now: You never, ever gamble if your goal is to get richer. Here’s how to really get rich: Earn as much as possible, waste as little as possible and invest the difference.

Windfalls are for Buying Freedom, Not Jet-Skis Almost every hard-working person ends up with a lucky break or two in his or her lifetime. You might get a bonus at work, a hefty insurance settlement, or an inheritance from family or friends. Most people promptly go out and spend these windfalls.

No. When you get a windfall, it goes straight to your highest-interest debt, or your mortgage, or to buy your next chunk of index funds or your next rental house. Why would you inflate your lifestyle when you haven’t even bought your freedom yet?

You Don’t Buy Stuff You Can’t Afford “I can afford it and I deserve it,” is a common refrain from people with high incomes and virtually no savings. So, here are just a couple of reminders on how to tell if you can afford something: If are in any sort of debt emergency, you probably can’t yet afford it.

If you still have to work for a living, and would prefer to have a choice in the matter, the diagnosis is the same.

You Don’t Buy Things You Don’t Need Really think about what it means to “need” something. For example, on a recent trip to Ecuador, my heart was captured by a very manly drinking flask made of leather and animal horns, and emblazoned with an awesome South American face.

“Gasp!” was my first response. “This thing is perfect! I must have this.”

I indulged the fantasy, felt the temptation wash over me, then proceeded to not buy the flask. Why? Because I didn’t go to Ecuador in search of a flask. Digging deep into my past, I distinctly remember being perfectly happy in the recent past without owning one of these things. Every material object must be looked upon as a lifelong burden. Will its benefits outweigh the lifelong burden? Consider carefully.

selling one house and before buying another one. They do it for years. At $100 per month or more. This is a sign from the Stuff Gods that you have too much stuff.

You Don’t Think of Restaurants as a Source of Food This summer, my wife and I disregarded this advice while spending the day in Montreal.

After several hours of walking, we ended up getting very hungry and still couldn’t find a reasonable place to eat. Everything was either fried foods, pizza or closed on Sunday.

Finally, we found a cafe and gratefully sat down. Two crummy salads and $30 plus tip later, I reminded myself to follow my own rule. Sustenance comes from your backpack.

Restaurants are for carefully planned experiences with good friends. A very similar rule exists for coffee.

You Put the Good Stuff on Automatic When visiting family members recently, I was intrigued by the ubiquitous piles of opened telephone and utility bills. They explained that they still paid bills by mailing checks. This is crazy; your utility bills and credit cards need to be set to automatically pay themselves, just like your 401(k) deductions and other investment programs. Why waste time and risk late payments? There is no benefit to doing these things manually – free your brain and your cash flow for the task of actually getting rich.

You Stock Up When Things are On Sale In Canada, cheese is very expensive, but everyone still eats it. This summer, the country’s largest grocery chain had a sale on cheese, where it went down to U.S.-like prices. This has never happened before.

“Wow, look at that,” my brother marveled as he threw one pack into his shopping cart.

“Good deal!”

What is missing in this picture? Cheese lasts at least 3 months if you keep it closed in the fridge. His family uses about 1 pound per week. So the correct amount to put into the cart is twelve pounds of cheese. You must apply this philosophy in all areas of life, whenever presented with savings on an item you already use. It minimizes both the time and cost of shopping.

These are the obvious tips that have scribbled themselves into my notebook during our travels of the past year. I hope that together they will instill some of the background fabric of efficient living that is essential for stitching together a happy and efficient life.

Ever since husband and wife Brian Bedford and Julie Miller started their consulting firm in 2001, they’ve felt haunted by the unsuccessful business practices that choke companies from the inside. From lying employees to disorganized management, one thing became very clear – our culture lacks accountability.

In their book Culture Without Accountability – WTF? this concerned couple tackles the big issues of bad business and offer a four step solution that will change the way we work and live.

Tell me a little bit about the book.

BEDFORD: Well you know the title, Culture Without Accountability – WTF? We hope that the title gets people interested, though it really stands for What’s the Fix? It’s a book that addresses what we think is a huge problem in the world today – a complete lack of accountability. In our consulting practice, we work with companies around the world that emphasize accountability, and their values and behaviors are much more successful. We thought we’d put together a book that helps people install accountability into their lives.

MILLER: The book is geared a little more toward businesses, but the concepts can be applied anywhere.

How do you incorporate your travels into what you do now?

MILLER: Through our travels, we learned that words mean different things in different 14 Flourish Magazine | April/2014

parts of the world. You need to define what accountability means to you. For example, when we were in Singapore we talked about empowerment. Here in western culture, empowerment is about getting the tools you need to complete a job on your own. There, empowerment means “you tell me what to do and I’ll go do it.” You should put together a list of dos and don’ts to ensure that people really understand what you mean.

How did you come up for the idea for the book?

BEDFORD: It was a combination of many things. The companies we’ve worked with that have emphasized accountability are much more successful than the ones who didn’t.

MILLER: For me, I got sick and tired of picking up the newspaper every day and reading about how people lost their homes from mortgage scams or how sports stars lied about taking performance enhancing drugs.

Everywhere we turn there are lies and that’s just not the kind of world I want to live in.

Why is accountability so important?

Bedford: When you’re running a business, it’s essential that you’re able to rely on people to do what they say they’re going to do, to tell the truth and to receive honest feedback. If you want to be successful, it’s vital that you have trust and accountability in the workplace.

MILLER: It’s really about trust. You need to have unquestioning integrity. No matter whether your behavior is good or bad, you must take responsibility. If you do well you can accept praise, but if you mess up you need to fi x things.

BEDFORD: It’s all about behavior and choices. When you’re faced with a situation, you always have a choice about how you’re going to behave. If you as a business owner

set some values around accountability and say, “These are the choices we expect you to make,” you’ll find that running your business gets easier.

Why do people act dishonestly?

MILLER: My impression is that people don’t mind getting caught doing things wrong. I think we all give ourselves passes on little things. We don’t want to own up to our mistakes. If we think we can get away with something, we’re going to try to because that’s human nature. It’s starts as a kid and just grows from there.

BEDFORD: One of the real issues is that accountability is hard. It’s a tough thing to do, and it’s so tempting to take the soft option and say, “Well, I’m not going to do that, it’s too much trouble.” That’s the slippery slope we’re all faced with.

MILLER: In the news, there are so many examples of accountability done poorly, whether it’s by athletes, business leaders or politicians. But what’s an example of good accountability? In the book, we give examples of what good accountability looks like. We want people to understand how

much better it’s been for companies and individuals who choose to act with accountability. There’s a four step process to install this specific culture of accountability in an organization.

BEDFORD: [Laughs] But most people don’t like giving feedback and they like receiving it even less.

Can you highlight what those four steps are?

MILLER: People now understand what’s expected from them. Imagine being a kid who’s in trouble every time they turn around because they don’t really understand the rules. People aren’t sure how to behave if the rules aren’t spelled out for them, but once you understand what you need to do to be successful, you can move forward.

BEDFORD: The first step is to share your vision and to make sure people understand that you think accountability is important.

The second is that you must bring accountability to life. Everyone has a different understanding of accountability and it’s all about behavior, so you need some behavior rules. “Do this, don’t do that.”

The third step is what we call “weaving it into the fabric of your organization,” which means that all of your critical systems and processes should reflect accountability, like who you hire, your rewards structure, and so on. The last one is the really hard one: you have to hold yourself accountable and hold others accountable. The most important thing you have to do is give feedback.

MILLER: Yes, this is critical.

How do people feel after they go through the steps of your program?

BEDFORD: Companies that we’ve worked with in the past say, “Now at last I understand how we’re supposed to behave. Now at last we understand how to communicate with each other. Now at last we understand how to give and receive feedback.”

MILLER: Suddenly companies understand how to be successful because everyone’s on the same page.

Home-based businesses have become a way of life for many women today. Whether you’re running your business full-time from home or working on the side to earn supplemental income, follow these tips to keep your business running smoothly.

Establish a Work Zone When you work from home, it’s easy to blur the lines between personal and professional life. While that’s part of the appeal of home-based work (where else can your toddler play at your feet during your nine-to-five?), you don’t want your business proposal landing on the kitchen table underneath this morning’s PB&J. If you have the space, consider creating a home office devoted entirely to your business. Most importantly, be clear with neighbors and friends about your work hours. Your time at home is work time, not leisure time, and it’s OK to remind your friends and family if they seem to forget.

On the same subject, be sure you know when to clock out of work as well. Many work-at-home moms feel as though they are always working. This is largely due to undefined scheduling, which is an issue that can be easily solved. By giving your business some definition, you can regain control and give your family the time they deserve as well.

Present a Professional Image When you’re working from home, it’s easy to slip into a comfortable mindset.

Unfortunately, this may rub off on potential customers or clients who may fail to take you seriously as a professional. To avoid any unprofessionalism, always remember to present a skilled image when meeting or talking with clients. Take the time to get dressed and double check that you grabbed your work folder, not your toddler’s homework. For victimized children, this poses some serious issues. Repeated bullying destroys a child’s self-esteem, causes serious emotional harm, affects their mental health and can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety and even thoughts of suicide.

Unfortunately, it isn’t always easy to pick out the students who are being tormented by bullies. For many reasons, children often hesitate to speak up about the verbal or physical abuse they may be experiencing at school. However, even if your child is not comfortable talking to you, you can look for the signs and take action to stop bullying once and for all.

Your Child May Be a Victim of Bullying If… They show physical signs of abuse, such as unexplained marks, cuts, scrapes or bruises on their body. In addition, complaints may include headaches, stomachaches, change in eating habits, bed wetting, nightmares or frequent visits to the school nurse’s office.

They seem to become clumsy with their personal belongings. For instance, if their toys, clothes or electronic items are continuously damaged or missing, or if they report mysteriously “losing” items like lunch money.

Body language can say a lot.

They show unusual peer avoidance. They may feel afraid to ride the school bus or to participate in after-school activities. Fearing school is a major red flag when it comes to bullying. In addition, they may become clingy and afraid to be left alone, and may appear to have fewer friends.

If your child’s answers are suspicious, arrange a conference with a teacher or trusted adult. Explain the situation and get their feedback. Keep in mind that teachers don’t always see what’s going on – not all bullying happens in the classroom. Your goal should be to figure out if your child is in fact being bullied and when it might be happening.

There are marked changes in their typical behavior or personality. They may appear withdrawn, sullen, evasive, moody, anxious or depressed, and the moods will last with no obvious cause.

They experience a drop in grades and scholastic performance, or seem to have trouble concentrating.

You can add things like their health insurance information, their pediatrician’s information and your personal contact information. What’s great is that once you have that record, you can save it on your computer or print it out. Parents love that, especially if they have a caregiver, a new babysitter, a

How did you become involved with Kinsights?

I joined the team a little over six months ago, but I originally joined the website as a parent user. Though I’ve belonged to other parent communities before, when I joined Kinsights, something felt different. Every time I asked a question, I had real context behind the person answering.

It was so easy for me to filter through the information and find the answers I needed. I became addicted to the site; I was on it all the time, posting questions and answering questions. One of the original founders sent me an email asking for my feedback.

Since we lived in the same area, I asked to meet for coffee, and we ended up brainstorming a bunch of ideas. It wasn’t long after that I joined the team.

How do other parents feel about using the site?

I got an email from a user who explained our site in a very interesting way. She said that it’s like you’re at a dinner party with interesting people who are all experts in different topic areas. That’s what it feels like; it’s more intimate, and it’s especially great for parents who are grappling with something a little more serious like a medical issue.

The other thing we hear a lot, especially from stay-at-home moms, is that sometimes parenting feels like the ultimate thankless job, but at Kinsights they get a lot of validation from the community for sharing great advice. If you write a great answer to a question, other people in the community will vote it up, so you feel recognized. It’s the validation you often don’t get as a parent.

Have parents used it to foster friendships?

A few months ago, we added the ability for parents to create groups. So, if you want an activity to do at home with your child, you can share ideas about that with a smaller community. We’ve also had people in the local area where I live whose kids are part of the same school who get connected on Kinsights.

What’s one aspect you love about Kinsights?

I really love that it’s free. We want every parent to have access to their child’s health information and to be able share that with anyone, regardless of their income. As a company, that’s something that we’re very passionate about.

What’s surprised you most about this website?

I’ve learned how fundamentally supportive parents want to be for each other. I used to wonder, “Am I ever going to have to moderate a heated conversation between two parents?”

But we haven’t had to do that yet.

People are just extremely helpful and thoughtful and are very supportive of what each parent is going through.

Keeping your spending in check is easier said than done. Whether you’re trying to save up for something special or you just want to quit your impulsive buying habits, here are five surprising tricks that can help you spend less.

According to a study in the Journal of Marketing Research, it hurts to have multiple money-saving goals in mind. Instead, pick one main reason you want to save money – like that trip to Europe you’re planning – and stick to it. This strategy ensures commitment and decreases distraction.

According to Harvard researchers, sadness can lead to feelings of impatience, which can harm your wallet, big time. Your mind will start inventing reasons you should spend your money now, before it can figure out a good reason to save it. Of course, money can’t buy happiness, so you’re better off filling the void with something less taxing.

2) Crisp Bills Quit excess spending with cold, hard cash. According to researchers at the University of Winnipeg, you spend less when you use crisp bills rather than old ones. The satisfaction of holding clean money – a symbol of wealth – outweighs the pleasure of spending it. Conversely, dirty money is perceived as rotten and unwanted, and it is easier to let go of.

3) Cash over Card Several small studies have found that people spend less when they pay with cash. With a credit card, it’s difficult to perceive the actual amount of money that’s leaving your hands.

When you pay with cash, however, you must actually watch your bills trade hands – a more painful process that you’ll likely avoid.

5) Stick to One Account If you have multiple bank accounts, you may want to consider trimming down. According to researchers at the University of Utah, people with fewer bank accounts spend less than those whose earnings are divided between several, for a reason that’s quite logical. When you lump all of your savings into one account, you know exactly how much money you have. If you spend any of it, the dollar total in your head takes a hit.

The result? You’re less willing to spend. With multiple accounts, that line is a little fuzzier.

Instead of locking up your savings and throwing away the key, use these little tricks to help you cut your spending.

It’s easy to think of the highly selfdisciplined as being uptight and miserable, but according to a recent study from the Journal of Personality, self-control can actually make us happier. The research showed that self-control isn’t all about depriving yourself, but more about how you manage differing goals (i.e. staying fit versus enjoying a treat).

Through a series of tests based on life satisfaction, moods, desires and levels of self-control, researchers found a strong connection between high self-discipline and happiness. According to the authors, individuals who exercise self-control don’t just do things that bring them happiness, but they’re also more likely to avoid problematic desires and conflicts (i.e. gaining weight from eating too many brownies).

As a result, the highly self-controlled reported higher spirits and better moods than their less-disciplined counterparts.

Interestingly, the study concluded that self-control isn’t as much about resisting temptation, but instead it’s about finding ways to avoid it. In this instance, many of us can learn something. We all know how difficult it can be to walk away from our favorite treats – they practically call to us! In order to resist temptation, the Journal of Personality suggests eliminating temptation in the first place. In other words, instead of walking down the candy aisle on our way to get milk, we should walk down the dog food aisle instead.

Of course, self-discipline doesn’t always mean self-denial. If we say no to little things today, we can save for a big payoff tomorrow. In this case, it seems like our brownie-less friends have it right. If we learn how to say no to treats at the right time, we can enjoy them guilt-free later on!

Few Gainesville Shoppers Are Aware of Retail Center’s Airport Past

Next time you’re scanning over tabloids while waiting in line at Walmart-Archer, let your mind drift beyond salacious headlines about the Kardashians and Miley Cyrus.

Try thinking about airplanes — not celebrity airheads — waiting in line like you, but to fly out, not checkout. Decades before the world’s largest retailer and other businesses clustered together to form Butler Plaza, planes flew in and out of Stengel Field.

A few years after purchasing his first plane in 1930, Carl Stengel began teaching novice pilots from all over North Central Florida through Stengel’s Flying School at the Gainesville Municipal Airport. But the school was grounded when World War II resulted in the Alachua Army Base taking over Gainesville Municipal Airport in 1941.

With the future of his business up in the air, Stengel needed a new location and ended up landing a flat, grassy area along Archer Road. It didn’t take long to take off as the first depiction of an airstrip was made by the

Orlando Sectional Chart in the summer of 1943. The following year the U.S. Army & Navy Directory of Airfields detailed “Stengel Airport” as having a 3,800-foot, sod-covered runway running east to west.

Another year flew by before air service would begin at the airport. Haire Publishing Company’s 1945 Airport Directory showed Stengel had three hangars with Don Dobbins listed as the operator.

After the war, the University of Florida constructed and managed apartments for faculty at the airport, according to the Inner Residence Hall Authority’s website.

Stengel Airport reportedly closed in 1971 and commercial construction would begin the following year on what would later become Butler Plaza. It has grown into the largest power center in Florida and is anchored by several large retailers, including Best Buy, Lowe’s, Target, two Publix supermarkets, a 14-screen Regal Cinemas movie theatre and, of course, Walmart.

Last month, parents and kids gathered at the Millhopper Branch Library to truly embrace childhood. To celebrate the arrival of spring, kids brought along their favorite stuffed animal and marched together in the Stuffed Animal Parade.

Children had a blast showing off their favorite toys, while parents enjoyed swapping stories, sharing memories and admiring the little people their children are growing up to be.

The first smile. The first word. The first step. There are so many moments during a child’s early days that parents cherish.

And then there are those… other moments.

The moment when you stare helplessly at a shrieking toddler who’s furious because you refuse to let them brush their hair with a fried chicken leg. Or the moment spent consoling a child with a wad of bubblegum in their hair. Or the one spent washing the ink-stained skin of a three year old who has discovered their inner Picasso.

We all have them. Even we as parents have our moments. The ones where you’re so filled with love and joy that you feel your heart will burst. The ones where you’re so angry, you put yourself in time-out. And, of course, the moments you realize your child is growing up.

My son seems to be doing just that.

As a young entrepreneur, he’s a shrewd businessman. He’s honed his skills in making jewelry – fanciful colored bracelets, necklaces and rings made from rubber bands and braided rope. Recently, he’s begun to wear his creations to school, and his classmates have started asking to buy from him. Now, we’ve even gone out shopping for craft supplies – his business is booming! As I watch him carefully choose and create materials for each order, I’m struck by his emerging business sense.

My most shocking moment came a week ago when my sister stopped by for a visit.

She’d heard about my son’s business and was eager to place an order. When she asked how much she owed him, my son replied, “I don’t charge for family.” My heart melted. My son has learned both the value of a dollar and the value of family. He is truly growing up.

As we hurry through our busy days, it’s moments like these that remind us to stop and appreciate the people our children are becoming. At age two, my son somehow pried the lid from a gallon of blue paint – I found him shoulder deep in the stuff.

Though it’s easy to get caught up in a moment of anger or frustration, as I look back, all I remember was the look in his eyes, alight with wonder at his amazing discovery. Yes, infants are tiring and toddlers are troublesome, but the hectic times won’t last forever, and we should appreciate their meaning while they last.

Today, I’ve grown to understand my son.

I realize that his quest for knowledge has made him the boy he is today. Let’s all take a moment to celebrate childhood with our kids, to watch and wait in happy anticipation, wondering what our next moments will be.

Step into Skylab Recording Studios, and you’ll see more than just isolation booths and sound equipment. You’ll see a team hard at work making artists’ dreams come true.

“We work with a wide variety of people – anyone can use our facility, from new artists to established musicians,” said Gerry King, Chief Mastering Engineer of Skylab Studios.

“We work with people who have never recorded before to major label artists. It’s such a great feeling to watch people’s faces light up after they’ve heard what we’re able to do with their work.”

Founded in the early ‘90s, Skylab is a full-service, professional recording facility right here in Gainesville. According to King, it’s a world-class recording environment – everything is top of the line, from the equipment to the design of the acoustic rooms to the team’s diverse skillset.

“We offer a wide range of services,” said King, “including audio recording, video production, editing and graphics design, transfers and restoration of old audio. We also have provided acoustic consulting for facilities like the Hippodrome 32 Flourish Magazine | April/2014

and local restaurants and banquet facilities; we have producers who can actually produce music with the clients. All music genres are welcomed including gospel, rock, hip hop, R&B and classical, to name a few.”

Of course, Gainesville residents aren’t the only ones who’ve taken notice of Skylab’s facility. Conveniently located in between Miami and Atlanta, their studio sees quite a bit of out-of-towners, too.

“Skylab is pretty low key, and big name artists like coming here because we’re kind of under the radar,” said King. “We’ve got a high-profile client coming in who’ll be locking out the studio for 10 days – I can’t name the name until the session’s done, but they’re a major label act. We get quite a bit of business like that.”

No matter the clientele, Skylab is dedicated to making everyone feel welcome. Their passion, experience and commitment to excellence continues to make Skylab the premier recording facility in North Central Florida.

“A lot of people who come to us – especially people who are recording for the first time – don’t know what to expect and may feel a little intimidated,” said King, “but we pride ourselves on our ability to make people feel really comfortable. We have a very clean and professional atmosphere. No matter how much experience you have, you can always come here and find the help you need to make your project successful.”

A record crowd of 7,000 enjoyed sunny skies and tricked-out rides during the third annual Tioga Car Show to benefit the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation.

The estimated attendance more than double last year’s estimated draw of 3,000.

Families and car enthusiasts trekked the Tioga Town Center, checking out everything from a 2010 Fire-Red Ferrari to a 1938 Ford Pickup and everything in between. Motorcycles, muscle cars and monster-type trucks also lined the streets.

Minutes before winners were announced, the collectors fired up their engines in unison. The roar echoed off of Tioga’s tall buildings as most attendees erupted in cheers and a few youngsters covered their ears. There was live music, face painting and bounce houses. Families also feasted on food trucks, funnel cakes, Sno Cones and Gator Domino’s Pizza.

Horst and Luisa Ferrero were joined by their family while thanking the community for its support. They created the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation in memory of their son, a three-yearold who died in October of 2007 after a series of preventable medical errors, including a medication overdose that occurred in Gainesville.

In addition, we tend to pour more when we’re holding the glass in our hands rather than setting it on the table. These misjudgments stem from our perception of volume – people tend to focus on vertical amounts, so we think we’ve got less in our glass when we use a wide cup instead of a tall one.

So, how to tell how much to pour without whipping out the measuring cup?

Never fill a wine glass beyond its widest point, and err for less when using a fat red wine vessel. Also, be wary of color. We tend to pour more when serving white wine because it seems less “solid,” which can make volume perception difficult. Overall, listen to your body. Pay attention to the signs and resolve to put the glass down when you know you’ve had enough.

Quotes of Shakespeare ring out through Millhopper Montessori School’s auditorium to the delight of on-looking parents and one very proud drama teacher. This year, Drama Director Sylvia Aslanian and her sixth through eighth graders put on another spectacular rendition of Shakespeare’s work. According to Aslanian, it’s all part of the path to confidence, growth and success for her students.

“I started Shakespeare because I love Shakespeare and so does the literature teacher,” said Aslanian. “We asked ourselves, ‘How can we get to a point where the students aren’t just writing essays and answering questions? What can we do to really get them involved? How can we help them truly understand the words of Shakespeare?’ That’s how we came up with the Shakespeare Festival.”

Stage fright is foreign to these accomplished students. The Montessori curriculum introduces students to speech, writing and acting from a young age. Each year the students continue to build upon what they’ve learned and by the time they reach eighth grade, they’re giving speeches extemporaneously. According to Aslanian, it’s the ongoing learning and success that helps their confidence blossom.

Aslanian’s students have been working hard since December to prepare for the sixth biannual Shakespeare Festival, creating theatrical portfolios, writing the script and crafting their own costumes and props.

According to Aslanian, each group of students is different, and no two Shakespeare Festivals have ever been the same.

“Even after a few years, you see their confidence grow,” said Aslanian. “When my middle school students leave here and take speech and debate in high school, they’ve already been doing it for so long that they’re really advanced.”

“They write the script and we guide them, but I try very hard not to change their words,” said Aslanian. “Instead, I ask them questions. ‘How can we make this clearer?

What are you trying to say here?’ That’s how we guide them.”

Art Fair Last month, over 100 artists gathered at the Tioga Town Center for the 2014 Tioga Winter Art Fair, which continues to be the only pedestrian-friendly nighttime art fair in the area.

The three day event featured local, regional and national artists and craftsman who displayed their paintings, photography, sculptures, quilts, baskets, jewelry, glass and more.

This year, the Tioga Winter Art Fair also featured a new and spectacular â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kids Zone,â&#x20AC;? which included artwork by local students. The Kids Zone was the perfect opportunity for students to enter an art show, display their work and have it judged by their peers. In addition, the Kids Zone featured train rides, bounce houses, games and crafts for inspired children to express their creativity at the fair.

Streetlight Sometimes a friend is the most powerful medicine interview by lauren douglass Being a teenager is tough. You aren’t quite a kid but not an adult either. You worry about graduation, crushes and fi tting in. As a teen, figuring out who you are can be hard – throw in a serious medical condition, and suddenly hard just got harder.

Streetlight Assistant Director Emily Sullivan is here to say that when hospital stays get in the way of prom, graduation and just being a teen, Streetlight is there. This long-term, young adult support program at UF Health Shands Hospital proves that sometimes a friend can be the most powerful medicine.

For those who aren’t familiar, can you explain what Streetlight is?

We’re a program for chronically ill teenagers and young adults. We see patients between the ages of 13 and 25 who usually have illnesses like cancer, sickle cell, cystic fibrosis or other long-term conditions. We have a team of about 65 pre-health volunteers who are all UF students. Our goal is to go in there and build a relationship with someone from diagnosis all the way until cure or end of life.

It seems like the students will benefit from this too, not just the patients.

The cool thing is that last year the University of Florida Center for Spirituality and Health did a research project on our volunteers to study how this experience affected them.

The results came back and we learned that this experience really does change the students’ perspective on dying and healthcare, especially as they go into medical school. That was pretty great to get those results because it confirmed what we hoped was happening with the volunteers.

Did you always know you wanted to be involved with Streetlight?

As an undergrad, I was a Streetlight volunteer. I was hired upon graduation for my writing background, but eventually I switched over into a leadership role.

When I graduated I knew I really wanted to do this work, but I looked all over the country for adolescent and peer support groups and there was nothing else like this anywhere. I feel really fortunate that I have the opportunity to stay here and continue my work with Streetlight since there’s really nothing like this anywhere else.

As assistant director, what will you be doing?

So many things [laughs]. I’ll be leading the program. I’m in charge of the volunteers and I manage their support with the patients. Every week, the volunteers have an educational meeting where we spend time reading different articles and talking about issues that teenagers and young adults with a chronic illness face. Every day is different. One day we can be throwing an end of chemo party and the next day we’re in the ICU supporting a family. You never know what’s going to happen but every day it’s a privilege to be a part of it.

Why is Streetlight so important?

For this age group, peer support is such a big part of your identity. When little kids are scared, they crawl into their mother’s arms, and middle aged adults have their own family network, but adolescents are trying to find their own identity and tend to look toward peers for support. Unfortunately, the friend support just isn’t there for a lot of our patients, so at Streetlight we have people who are there for the long haul.

We require our Streetlight volunteers to give a minimum two year commitment upon entering the program so there’s lots of good time to build those relationships.

So it’s kind of like Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Sure, you could compare it to a mentor program, especially since our volunteers are usually older than the patients. It’s really cool because the relationships happen organically. We have a group lounge in the evening that’s set aside specifically for teenagers, and it’s great to see teens sharing their stories and connecting with others.

Outside of the companionship, what other ways does Streetlight help patients?

I think companionship is the vehicle for every kind of support that we give. Last year, we got to know a girl who was waiting on a heart. She had to miss out on a lot of landmark experiences of her senior year like prom and graduation, so we ended up throwing her a prom and graduation here at the hospital. For the cancer kids, we’re throwing them end of chemo parties and writing their biographies to help them reflect on their journey. One thing I think that makes this program different is that when these kids transition to Adult Care, we follow them through that transition so they aren’t going through it alone.

How do you deal with more challenging situations?

Streetlight has a mantra: We get to carry each other. We really support each other when we go through a challenging death.

Loss is inevitable, it’s part of life, and our volunteers going into the healthcare program are going to experience it.

We’ll gather around a campfire and share memories about the patient-friends we’ve lost. It’s a healthy way to be able to celebrate the relationships we’ve had.

If you could give parents of an ill child one piece of advice, what would it be?

A lot of patients, as much as they love their family support, also need space as well. As a parent, aim to be there and give them lots of love but also know when to step away.

Sometimes a patient wants to have one on one time with their Streetlight friend. That may be what they need in that moment.

Sports Bullet Caroline Holloway will be the fourth generation of her family to play sports at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va.

Area basketball teams make deep postseason runs Historic seasons by a pair of Chiefland teams highlighted several deep postseason runs by area teams.

The Indians’ boys (26-2 overall) and girls teams made it to the Class 1A state semifinals for the first time in both programs’ history.

The Indians’ boys trailed by a single bucket at halftime (31-29) but were unable to keep pace as eventual state champ Malone pulled away for a 67-59 win. Chiefland was powered all season by the 1-2 punch of guards Kyle Weeks and Gangelo (GG) McLendon.

The Lady Indians lost to eventual state champ Paxton in the Final Four. CHS freshman phenom Kiya London, who’s 6-foot-2, averaged 15 points per game for the 18-2 Indians.

Eastside’s boys and Hawthorne’s girls were other area teams to make it to the Final Four in their respective classifications.

Santa Fe’s boys, PK Yonge’s girls and Hawthorne’s boys all reached the regional finals.

Gainesville High’s girls won district and defeated Pensacola 70-61 in the regional quarterfinals. The Lady Hurricanes season ended with a 56-53 loss against eventual state runner-up Pine Forest. Eastside’s girls team won its district and reached the regional semifinals in Class 5A. Buchholz’ girls fell victim to a tough first-round draw in Class 7A after finishing runner-up in District 3. The defending state champion Lady Bobcats, led by Janiyah McKay who Flourish featured in February’s issue, battled before falling 77-73 to eventual state champ Wekiva in the opening round.

Gainesville’s boys team won its district and beat Milton in the 6A Regional quarterfinals before falling to Pensacola.

Oak Hall’s girls claimed a district title but lost in the opening round of the Class 3A regionals, as did the Eagles’ boys team.

College Signings Oak Hall golfer Carolina Holloway signed with Washington & Lee University. She played seven seasons of variety golfer, serving as co-captain for both the boys and girls squads during her career. She will be a fourth

generation athlete at the school as her great grandfather was captain of the track team, her grandfather played football and lacrosse, and her mother played soccer for the Generals, according to Oak Hall’s website.

Oak Hall soccer player Sam Malnik has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his career at Amherst College. He was a member of the Eagles’ varsity squad for seven years and also was on the school’s weightlifting team for three years. He plays club soccer for Miramar United FC, which was No. 1 in Florida and No. 1 in the Southeastern United States region.

In addition, Oak Hall volleyball player Kelsie Tebbett signed with Aurora University in Illinois. The 5-foot-9 middle blocker recorded 116 kills and 44 blocks this past season.

‘Dream Job’ Drew Schaeffer was named Oak Hall’s next volleyball coach, replacing long-time coach Cari Martin after her December resignation.

After wrapping up its “home” match on another school’s field, several Buchholz High seniors searched for a spot in the grass to pose for photos. The overused field tucked in behind Gainesville High hadn’t been mowed in a week, so the greener, more photogenic areas had grass 6-10 inches tall.

“It’s worn down in the middle if you want to go out there,” one player said.

Asked if the itchy grass would bother their bare legs, the young ladies laughed.

Women lacrosse players are not your average careful-or-you’ll-break-a-nail types.

They’re tough as nails. And they’ve long learned to overlook field issues. They’re just happy to have a place – any place – to play.

Explaining, not complaining, Buchholz coach Lynn Millinoff describes coaches having to beg, borrow and deal for fields owned by private entities such as churches and the Boys & Girls Club of Alachua County.

Local Lacrosse Teams Beg, Borrow & Deal For Places To Play

“I can’t even tell you how lucky we are to be able to use the Boys and Girls Club,” Millinoff said, noting how Buchholz has had to use the field for varsity games. “Our kids even pay a fee to the Boys and Girls Club, and as a team we contribute every year to the Boys and Girls Club, just as a ‘Thank you, we love you for not kicking us off.’ We’re glad to pay for that because otherwise, we wouldn’t have a place to play.”

Public school teams scramble the most because public-owned fields are not available to Gainesville’s fastest growing and most popular sport in terms of participation among 10-18 year olds because of the way the fields originally were developed.

Simply put, lacrosse arrived late to the game. Rewind to more than a decade ago when soccer was experiencing the same boom that lacrosse is now. Like lacrosse, soccer quickly outgrew the number of available fields. Several soccer clubs united, raised money and convinced county commissioners to set aside space for fields in existing parks. Back then, matching funds and bonds were available for such projects to keep kids on the field and off the street.

“The fields were built and designated for one sport – and that’s soccer,” said Alachua County Parks/Open Spaces Superintendent Vernest LeGree.

“The fields have to be managed carefully so we don’t lose them,” LeGree said. “The scheduling and everything that comes with it, it’s a lot of work. If these individuals were not there, those fields would probably go away.”

So why doesn’t lacrosse simply take a page out of soccer’s game plan to get fields constructed?

It’s because those matching funds and grants that soccer benefitted from are no longer available due to budget cutbacks all over the country.

Millinoff has approached field managers about getting on the schedule in hopes of getting on the field, but has been turned away at every turn.

“I was asking for a day here, a day there, and it was always in use or (they) were letting that field recover,” Millinoff said. “I finally said, ‘OK, is there any day, any time, throughout the entire year that we can use the field. And I was told, ‘Absolutely not. You’re not getting on my field.’”

Because soccer kicked off before lacrosse, heads of that sport were contracted to head up daily field management. For example, Leg-A-Z Soccer Club president Basil Benjamin decides what teams can – and cannot – use its field despite Alachua County taxpayers footing the bill for the upkeep, which costs between $180,000-200,000 annually.

According to LeGree, it’s not anything against lacrosse specifically, although he understands the concern of the managers because lacrosse has “a lot of concentrated play in certain areas that significantly wears down those areas.”

Other sports, including high school soccer and football teams, have been denied field time, he said. The reason is simply because the teams on the schedule have been on the schedule for years, well before lacrosse’s need for field time arose.

“Each sport deserves space to accommodate its teams,” LeGree said. “But if you’re a newcomer, you sort of have to wait your turn … You can’t just bump somebody off the schedule that has been on there for years.

“Lacrosse certainly has a legitimate need, but that would not be fair to those teams, those kids, those parents that have been scheduled (for years).”

Millinoff said her dream is for a rich benefactor to provide funds for a new field. But if that doesn’t happen, LeGree has an idea that may solve the field issue that results in him fielding calls “almost every day, every week.”

“One thing I see that could be a benefit are these large developments being built,” LeGree said. “(Lacrosse supporters) could go to the builders to say, ‘What about the kids that will live in these homes? What about setting aside some open space (for a field)?’

“These developers could be a new generation that builds parks and (playing) fields.”

In the meantime, players such as Buchholz girls – who were undefeated at the time – will have to keep smiling and playing through the tall grass and adverse field conditions.

Spring Is In Full ‘Boom’ With Muschamp’s Squad Starting Practice BASEBALL Coach Kevin O’ Sullivan’s squad won two of three home games against Arkansas during the SEC opening weekend. Florida needed the wins and the confidence after falling out of the national polls with an 11-6 record entering the series. Junior transfer Braden Mattson was 5-for-10 to pace the Gators’ offense while pitchers Logan Shore and Eric Hanhold each recorded a win.

GOLF Following poor shooting on the final day of the Chris Shenkle Invitational, men’s coach Buddy Alexander called UF’s 13th place finish “the low point in the season.” The Gators were coming off a season-best tourney score of 855 at the USF Invitational on March 4. Gainesville native JD Tomlinson’s career-low 64 in the final round secured the team’s ninth place finish. Camilla Hedberg sank a tournament-high 12 birdies to help the women finish eighth at the SunTrust Invitational at UF’s Mark Bostick Golf Course.

LACROSSE No. 4 Florida was unable to pull off an upset, falling 17-12 against No. 2 Syracuse at home on March 15. Nora Berry set a school record by forcing five turnovers while Shannon Gilroy moved up to third all-time in career scoring at UF with three goals. The Gators fell to 8-2 with the loss. The only other setback was a 20-8 defeat against No. 1 North Carolina in the season opener.

No. 3 Florida wrapped up the regular season with the nation’s third highest team total of 2014 in a win at Missouri on March 14. Kytra Hunter extended her school record with a sixth 10.0 this season. It was her fourth in the floor exercise. Bridget Sloan also tied a UF record with a total 39.825 for her 15th career All-Around win. Sloan is the defending NCAA All-Around champion.

The SEC Championships were March 22 while UF likely will host an NCAA Regional, which begins April 5.

The top-ranked Gators improved to 28-2 and 4-2 in SEC play with a 10-2 mercy rule victory at No. 25 LSU on March 16. That came on the heels of a thrilling 7-6 win in extra innings when Chiefland native Taylor Fuller’s grand slam in the seventh helped erase a 5-1 deficit. Pitchers Hannah Rogers and Delanie Gourley have combined for a 22-2 record while Kelsey Stewart (.427, 30 RBIs) and Lauren Haeger (.348, 10 homers) have paced the offense. Haeger also has posted a 6-0 mark on the mound.

SWIMMING & DIVING Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s women and men each qualified 14 for the NCAA Championships. The womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s championship was March 20 in Minneapolis while the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s began March 27 in Austin, Texas. UFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s women returned 33 of its top 35 All-American swims from last season while 10 of 13 All-Americans off last seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s squad made the trip for the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team.

TENNIS The defending national champ and third-ranked Gators womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team suffered its first SEC loss of the season when they were upset 4-2 at No. 12 Georgia on March 16. Meanwhile, Georgiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s men got the best of No. 17 Florida in Gainesville when the No. 16 Bulldogs won the final set to take home a 4-3 victory.

Brittany Harrell broke a school record with 4,287 points in the pentathlon. Senior Eddie Lovett came oh-so-close to repeating as champion in the 60-meter hurdles as both he and Arkansasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Omar McLeod clocked in at 7.58 seconds.

Record Crowd Blitzes Book Signing

The line snaked around several long rows of book shelves. About 500 people, including one sporting Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts jersey, created the long line and largest book signing the 13th Street Books-A-Million has hosted. They were there getting copies of Uncommon Marriage signed by coauthors Lauren and Tony Dungy and Nathan Whitaker, a Gainesville native who has penned six books with Tony Dungy, including New York Times best sellers Uncommon and Quiet Strength.

Has this been like a long wedding day for you two? It seems tiring to pose for so many pictures and on-camera interviews.

lauren: No, no, no [laughing]. It’s actually gratifying. It brings us a lot of joy to know that what we’re doing will help people in their relationships and in their marriages, so it’s a blessing and it’s a privilege to be able to do this.

tony: But it has been different, you know, with the Today Show and Fox and Friends and different national shows in New York, knowing you’re speaking to the whole country.

Was there a point in your life when you realized you were comfortable making your faith public? tony: I think when I got to the Pittsburg Steelers as a rookie. I saw some guys who were totally dedicated to it and just felt like that was part of who they were. That you couldn’t separate it from your job. That it was just part of you. And I took that approach from then on out. And when you are on the public stage, especially once I became a head coach, people want to ask about your personal life. They want to get to know you, so I always felt like, “Well, get to know all of us.” All of me being my relationship with Christ also.

How long did you guys know you wanted to do this book, and what was the thinking behind it? lauren: We talked about it for a few years. We enjoyed writing the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little different when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re developing characters. We decided that we could make a difference if we told our story and it is our heart to see other marriages strengthened, so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re enjoying this process. tony: Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been at some couplesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Bible studies at our church in the last three or four years and questions that get asked on Thursday nights and some things that we discuss, we just felt like we learned a lot and we felt like we could pass that on. Especially, the one thing we thought, which happened with Quiet Strength, non-Christians would read it. It wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just be in Christian book stores or in a Bible study or in a church setting. There might be some

Are there plans to collaborate on another book in the future? lauren: Well, we have nine kids so there have been a lot of suggestions about doing a book on parenting, so that might be next. tony: Or, something on adoption.
