Medieval With the popularity of films like Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games, it’s no wonder you’re dying for the chance to visit a mystical land of beats and battles. During Hoggetowne’s 29th Annual Medieval Faire, you can.

Over the weekends of January 24th and January 30th, prepare to laugh, sing and dance as the kingdom of Hoggetowne opens its gates. There, you’ll find more than 160 talented artisans selling their wares, entertainers performing in the streets, knights jousting on horseback and magicians charming the crowds. Whether you’re looking to purchase medieval jewelry, feast on giant turkey legs or simply watch the craftsmen at work, the fair has something for everyone.

aerial acrobatics and old-world mysticism can be seen. Visitors can also engage in traditional medieval games of chance and skill. You can shoot arrows, hurl battle axes at targets, ride humanpowered push rides or navigate your way through a winding maze. Here at Campus Talk, we’re especially excited for this year’s theme – “In the Days of Robin Hood.” We know we’ll arrive bright and early to greet King John, Robin Hood and his merry men as they battle the forces of evil. Tucked away in the enchanted forest of the Alachua County, this festival is a blend of artwork, period music and medieval traditions. The Hoggtowne Medieval Faire draws more than 55,000 guests each year and costs $17 for adults, $7 for children ages 5 to 17.

Each morning all entertainers greet the Hoggetowne guests as the city gates open and reveal a magical world within. There’s weaving, blacksmithing, leatherworking, wood carving, glass blowing, jugglers, knife throwers, gypsy dancers, fortune tellers…we won’t know where to start!

Bailey Chase has many homes. He was born in Chicago, raised in Florida, has a house in Hollywood and (practically) lived on the set of Longmire, A&E’s contemporary crime-thriller based on the best-selling series by Craig Johnson. Here, Chase discusses the filming of Longmire, his newborn baby girl, and everything he’s learned on his journey to success. Tell me a little about shooting Longmire – what challenges do you face while filming?

Floridian Turned

Cowboy

The location is pretty tough on the crew because we shoot on location almost six days a week. We average one or two days on the sound stage per episode. We do seven day episodes, which is a little more for cable, but for a show of this scale you’d expect to get at least eight days to shoot an episode. It’s a minor miracle each week when we get everything in on time and under budget. Everyone’s great though. We’re all team players.

For non-viewers, could you jump in and understand what’s going on?

You know, I tried that with Breaking Bad. Bad Everyone always said it was such a great show, so I thought I could just jump in and figure it out. Eventually I realized I just needed to go back and start from the beginning – I enjoyed the show so much more that way because I was able to understand all the subtle nuances. I’d say it’s the same with Longmire. You should go back to the pilot episode; it’ll take you on quite a ride through all three seasons. Branch, my character, starts out as kind of a cookie cutter cowboy cop, but by the end you see this transformation. You’re hoping that he’s sane and alive by the end [laughs].

An Interview with Bailey Chase of Longmire interview by lauren douglass

10 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

Too many pieces of music finish too long after the end. igor Stravinsky

What kind of viewer does Longmire interest? I think it appeals to a pretty broad scope. A lot of people liken it to some throwback cop shows from the 80s and even before that. It’s certainly got an old style to it, but we have a lot of younger fans, too. People are fascinated by the American western drama and all the nuances of the Native American rituals. I think it’s exciting for everyone.

What have you learned about yourself from playing Branch? [Laughs] That’s a good question. I think with any character, there’s some self-reflection. You try and identify certain points that you have in common with your character. Branch sometimes comes off as cocky and arrogant, which I probably come off that way sometimes. But at the end of the day, Branch does things for the right reasons and he’s a good guy. He puts others before himself. I’d like to say that in real life, I’m the same way. I’m recently married and now I’m a father, so I think there’s a lot of truth to that.

Congratulations – how is fatherhood? It gets better every day. She’s 12 weeks. My wife and I were just looking at some baby pictures and I can see how much she’s changed in the last month or two. It happens so fast. You hear all of these clichés about becoming a parent, but when it actually happens to you, you’re like, “Okay, the clichés are true.” It’s really the best thing ever.

How do you split your time between your job and your family? Everyone does what they have to do to get through the day. I’m very fortunate to be able to spend a lot of time with my daughter right now. It’s hard being away from her when I have to travel, but being away does allow me to focus on the movie and to get into character. But now, I’m so happy to be with my family and watch her grow up.

What are some of the challenges of being an actor? The more successful you are, the more famous you become. We all have these protective instincts over our families and our privacy, so there’s been a bit of an adjustment to be made there. The fans of Longmire and the fans of my work have all been great, though. It’s never been a huge problem.

Looking back, what kind of advice would you give your younger self? More patience. I would tell myself to stay humble no matter what. Acting isn’t all glamor; it’s a lot of hard work and takes a lot of patience. To see more of Bailey, be sure to check out Longmire on A&E! When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I’ve never tried before. Mae West

GATORS VOLLEYBALL

UF’s volleyball team has three regular season matches in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in the month of November. General admission tickets are $4 each while UF students and children 17 and under are free.

Something

By mike capshaw photos courtesy uaa communications Only three chances remain to witness something special. Thanks to a more-challenging-than-usual non-conference slate, the Gators’ volleyball team has dominated SEC play and has set its sights on winning a 21st conference championship. Through seven matches, Florida had lost just two sets in league play while recording five sweeps. The final opportunities for fans to catch a regular season match in the O’Connell Center are when Florida hosts Alabama on Nov. 7, Auburn on Nov. 12 and South Carolina in the SEC finale on Nov. 26. Not to look too far ahead, but a Nov. 16 matchup at Kentucky should serve as the SEC regular season championship as its pits the top two teams in the league. Both the Wildcats and Gators were the only unbeaten teams in league play at press time and, save for an 12 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

upset, they’ll be unbeaten when they meet at high noon on that Sunday in Lexington. For the Gators, there were some growing pains early on. They opened 6-3, including losses against then-No. 8 FSU and then-No. 3 Texas. The other setback was a five-set loss against Marquette, a team that was unranked but playing its best volleyball at the time. Growing pains were expected because of the schedule and because the Gators are a relatively young team with just three seniors on the roster. That said, the key to it all was that it kept growing. “To be 6-3 after the quality opponents we’ve played, we’re really pleased with where we are,” legendary coach Mary Wise said at the

time. “We’ve never played this kind of schedule. Going back from Oklahoma on, opponent after opponent, teams that will be in the NCAA tournament without any kind of break in between. I think it shows the resiliency of this group, the progress that it’s made, and going into the SEC schedule, now we’re all 0-0 and that’s what we talked to the team about.” The Gators have shown steady improvement in all areas but especially in transitioning from defense to offense, a point Wise has continued to emphasize. An aggressive defense — from the serve to the block to the play of the back row — has frustrated opponents all season long. On Oct. 12, Florida limited then No. 19 Texas A&M — the SEC’s top hitting team — to a .119 hitting efficiency.

I don’t know anything about music. In my line you don’t have to. elvis Presley

And what’s made this team special to watch is how well it plays together as a team. It’s like watching six gears working in unison — each one needing the other to keep turning and churning out wins. Each player has a role to play and sticks to it from first serve to final point. “The story of the season has been on any given night, any of our players can step up and be difference makers,” Wise said after a 3-1 win at South Carolina on Oct. 15. A regular difference maker has been Rhamat Alhassan, a 6-foot-4 middle blocker who has been dominant despite being a true freshman. She has earned several weekly awards for her performance, including being named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week on Sept. 16. At press time, she was among the nation’s leaders and tops in the SEC in hitting efficiency and blocks per set. Other difference makers include players like Alex Holston, Ziva Recek and Holly Pole, but the one who always deserves credit for putting it all together is Wise. She became the only active women’s coach to reach 800 wins earlier this season. No Division I coach in men’s or women’s basketball, football or baseball sported

a higher winning percentage (.888) than Wise did entering her 24th season at UF. There’s a solid chance those three November games won’t be the last chance for Florida fans to watch Wise and her team in action as the Gators, if things stay on script, could host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in the O’Connell Center. Wise called SEC play the “meat” of the schedule. She said she measures a team by how much it improves from September through the end of November and reiterated that this year’s team had “great potential for growth throughout the year.” “The goal is that by playing (tough teams early), when we are in SEC competition, or if we’re fortunate enough to be playing postseason, we can refer back to these matches (and say), ‘This team is very similar to that one we played on opening weekend. Their right side is very similar to that team’s right side, and let’s see how much better we are now,’” Wise said. “It’s the only way in sports, really, to get better — play teams that are better than you.”

Buchholz Finally Snaps Skid Against Gainesville High To Win Mythical City Title

Champs By Mike Capshaw | Photos by Rick McNally

Buchholz sophomore Coby Weiss kicks the game-winning field goal, a 40-yarder, to snap a five-game losing streak against GHS.

Buchholz vs. Gainesville featured all of the elements of a traditional rivalry.

combined score of 149-37, giving the annual encounter more of a David vs. Goliath feel.

Passionate fans all abuzz around town with some calling into local sports talk radio shows that are normally filled with Florida Gators banter. Players from both teams that had played with or against one another since they were in Pee-Wee football.

But with one swing of his leg, diminutive BHS sophomore Colby Weiss did his best David impersonation by kicking a 40-yard field goal as the final buzzer sounded.

Parking lots so packed that some charged $5 for prime spots, something usually reserved for college games. Stands were packed, as well, with standingroom-only in both student sections. Extra signs were hung around Milton Lewis Stadium which was divided by a chain-linked fence with purple on one side and black and gold on the other. Special T-shirts were made such as one reading, “No Need For Evacuation #bobcatnation,” a clever play GHS’ mascot: the Hurricanes. Even a pair of shirtless, capewearing BHS students ran onto the field to halt play during the game and provide some levity during a tense moment in the action.

BHS quarterback Jackson White releases some emotion after his team’s 23-20 victory against Gainesville High.

14 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

Still, something was missing. The rivalry had been so one-sided in recent years that it had lost a little luster. Gainesville High had dominated the past five consecutive meetings by a

BHS fans and players hesitated for a brief moment, almost in disbelief, as if to say to one another, “Did we do it? Did we really do it?” The answer was a resounding, “Yes!” Buchholz 23, Gainesville 20. Pandemonium ensued as the BHS side of the stadium erupted into a celebration. Down on Citizens Field, Bobcats players ran wild with several screaming at the top of their lungs with both arms extended high above their heads. They ran and ran some more before finally coming together in a boiling black and gold pot of excitement in front of the home stands. They whooped, hollered and jumped onto each other with the jubilant bunch appearing like it was about to turn into huge dog pile. A few knees buckled, but the group didn’t collapse. After being beaten down for so long by their rivals, BHS players

were too proud to fall. They stood tall, and for good reason. They finally defeated their nemeses. Their Goliath. Their rival. When the celebration settled a short time later, senior left tackle Jaleel Brown was beaming, sporting a wide smile that seemed almost permanent. “It’s been a long time coming — a long time coming,” Brown said. “Being a three-year starter, this is my first time beating (GHS). It’s a great feeling.” It was a monumental win for the program and coach Mark Whittemore. He graduated from BHS in 1991 and has coached at his alma mater for 18 years, including the past three as head coach. So where does this year’s game rank in the history of the rivalry? “Whenever you’re playing a city rival and win, it ranks pretty high,” Whittemore said. Whittemore received his share of high-fives and hugs from players, parents, fellow coaches and boosters. One said, “Those boys got it back for you!” Coupled with a win against Eastside in the season opener, Buchholz is the reigning city champions, which was one of its three goals entering the season. The others are to have a winning record at home and make the playoffs. Despite the emotional atmosphere all around, Whittemore tried to keep a serious tone during the interview, but was unable to keep the occasional smile from cracking through. “It’s really special because these kids have really worked their tails off and they’ve believed,” Whittemore said. “We just wanted to come out here and play great football. And for us, great football equals great effort.

Obviously, we made some mistakes, but we just wanted to come out here and give great effort to put us in a position (to win) and obviously you saw there at the end that we were in that position. “We had some great plays all throughout the game that got us to 20-20, but in the end, it was really Coby Weiss’ kick.” Weiss missed his first attempt from 42 yards out at the end of the game’s opening drive, but made it for it by splitting the uprights with his next three, including the game-winner. He connected on a 41-yarder to tie the score at 20-all and a 33-yarder in the first quarter. Junior quarterback Jackson White also was instrumental in rallying the Bobcats back from a 10-point deficit. He completed 21 of 39 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown. With the clock winding down, the game looked destined for overtime until White completed consecutive passes, including a highlight-reel-worthy catch by Laron James to set up the winning field goal. Brown knows all about resiliency after battling back from a shoulder injury at the end of last season and a knee surgery that caused him to miss the Eastside game. He said he never doubted the Bobcats would rally back to win, just like they did in a 31-21 victory against Eastside. “That goes back to never giving up. You’ve got to play all four quarters,” Brown said. “This has got to be one of the biggest moments of my career.” During the post-game team meeting, Whittemore told his players to not go on social media sites like Twitter and start bragging or talking trash. “We don’t want to become that team that’s selfish and all about pride and arrogance,” Whittemore said. “We want to work hard and be humble, that’s the real goal. Act like champions and not like people who are prideful and arrogant. “All of us struggle with that but that’s something we’re really working on as a team. To carry ourselves like champions.”

Retirement in the 21st Century

Financial Planner: Another 2008-style Economic Disaster Could Happen Again, Suggests New Kind of Diversity While the world is still feeling the long ripples of the economic meltdown that began six years ago, our economic institutions remain “too big to fail” – at least in the minds of millions of retired Americans and those soon to join their ranks, says veteran financial advisor Curt Whipple. “That’s what we see when we review their retirement portfolios,” says Whipple, a Certified Wealth Strategist, Certified Estate Planner and CEO of C. Curtis Financial Group. He recently published “Retiree Lifeline! How to Get Government Out of Your Pocket,” (ccurtisfinancial.com), a retirement planning guide. “I see it all the time: a new client comes in with what they believe to be a ‘diverse’ portfolio. While it may be diverse in terms of Wall Street holdings, a solid retirement plan also requires diversity outside of a system that’s ‘too big to fail,’ which could fail yet again.” 16 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

When Wall Street falls, it shouldn’t mean that Main Street must as well. Whipple outlines the three kinds of money that retirees should have available for enjoying the golden years with peace of mind.

Red money can be defined as that which is tied to Wall Street, by far the most popular kind of investment, including stocks, bonds and mutual funds. “I’ve been looking at the accounts of new clients for nearly three decades, and on average, 92 percent of their retirement plan is based in these investments,” he says. “That’s risky, especially as you get closer to retirement age or once you retire. You don’t want 92 percent of your retirement premised on that kind of potential volatility.”

Blue money is often referred to as “alternative investments,” which typically include Real Estate Trusts (REITS), equipment leasing programs, precious metals such as gold and

Green money is accounts that come with a guarantee of some sort. They are either backed by the FDIC, the Legal Reserve System, which is supported by the insurance industry, or insurance companies themselves. “Not all wealth is created equally, and this is the safest kind of money you can have in your retirement plan,” he says. Green money includes investments in one’s portfolio that have guarantees to not lose one’s principal and, sometimes, one’s earnings. “Investment in Wall Street should be much lower for those who are either retired or are about to be retired,” Whipple says. “Depending on a person’s age, a good investment portfolio could include about 36 percent red money, 32 percent blue money and 32 percent green money.” Vote early and vote often. al capone

Overtime or Overkill? By elizabeth putfark

Working overtime might seem like a sacrifice, but do you know about all you’re giving up? Recent studies from the University College of London suggest that saying “No” to time-and-a-half might better your odds at long-term health and happiness in more ways than you think. Hazards of Working Late Researchers found that individuals who work 55 hours or more a week have a 30 percent greater risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Long hours can disrupt normative sleep, rest and exercise habits that are crucial to maintaining health well into adulthood.

Other studies have found links between working overtime and developing cardiovascular disease, anxiety disorders and depression. Workers who consistently push beyond an eight-hour workday increase the odds of sustaining injuries on and off the job, according to the National Institute of

Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH investigators also found correlations between overtime work and excessive weight gain and alcohol use.

Just Say No Next time your boss asks for a few extra hours, think about what you’re really sacrificing. If it’s only

once every now and again, go ahead and run that extra mile. However, if overtime starts to become the norm, find a way to step out of the rat race. After all, what’s the point of success if you’re too worn down to enjoy it?

DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE THIS YEAR TO FIND THE PERFECT GIFT FOR THE ONE YOU LOVE!

PRIME TIM WITH KIDSE

“It’s all in the words”

Family Game What do you think of when you hear the word “table”? In your mind, do you see the large rectangular piece of furniture in your kitchen? Your fourth-grader might picture a multiplication chart, and your sixth-grader a list of contents at the beginning of a book.

Distrust any enterprise that requires new clothes. Henry david thoreau

By donna erickson Each person's frame of reference develops from a perception of things based on the information we know and the things familiar to us. In a typical family, it's not unusual to find one person's frame of reference totally opposite from another's, which often leads to the familiar, "I don't understand where you're coming from!" Here is a fun word game to help the whole family appreciate differences in perception. Give each family member a piece of paper and a pencil, and five minutes to write down all of the pictures that pop in his or her mind when a particular word is heard. Then compare lists. For example, try the word "copy" and see what comes up. Did you write that it means to duplicate on a machine? Maybe Grandmother wrote copy means to draw, trace or write the same thing over. If Dad is a newspaper writer, copy is the words or manuscript he

writes. If Mom is a police officer, to copy means to understand. Or, think of the various meanings of the word "key." In addition to figuring out "key" meanings to this game, one person might be dreaming of the warm weather in the Florida Keys this time of year, while another who plays an instrument thinks of the musical key of a favorite song. A key to a road map helps understand its symbols, and a car key gets you on the road. Discuss factors that may have made your definitions different, such as the person's age, work or school environment. Continue with other words. As you become more aware, encourage your children to explore the difference in cultures of people in the community, whether they embrace a religion different from yours, speak a language other than English or come from another country.

Two Tails Have you ever wondered what happens to an elephant when he’s ready to retire? Or where the zoos are hiding them when the cage is being remodeled? Since 1984, over 250 elephants have made their way to Williston, Florida for these and other reasons. Two Tails Ranch was founded by Theodore Svertesky in 1984, and in 1985, Patricia Zerbini joined in. She comes from 8 generations of exotic animal caretakers and had the idea of opening the ranch to the public in 2009. Home to a varying range of elephants pending on current needs, Two Tails is the closest a Gainesville resident can get to an elephant! Guests are able to feed and possibly pet the elephants as well as watch their playful behavior.

RANCH

Every year, Two Tails opens its doors to the public to host their Elephant Appreciation Day, where guests can mingle with the gentle giants, enjoy face-painting, concessions, and even see big cats brought up by their friends, Big Cat Habitat in Sarasota. Elephant Appreciation Day is a great way to engage the public with the great work Two Tails Ranch is doing in protecting, conserving, and even breeding these magnificent creatures. Where to enjoy nature, wildlife and other outdoor adventures this winter

Day-trips By Elizabeth Putfark

Your favorite history buff will love tagging along on a trip to this 61-acre Native American ceremonial site. Years before Columbus, the complex drew an estimated 7,500 Natives a year from all over the surrounding regions to trade and bury their dead. As you study the features of the ancient site, remember to soak in the beauty of the surrounding marshes.

Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve

Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park

If nature is your passion, get to Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve to observe the diverse wildlife, flora and fauna living where the salt marshes turn to swamp. Live oaks, myrtles, and saw palmettos dot the varied terrain, which you can access on foot or mountain bike. Or, if you prefer the waterways, rent a kayak or canoe from the nearby town of Cedar Key and watch for animals along the shoreline as you paddle through the wetland preserves.

Recently renamed in honor of the late explorer, Wes Skiles, this park looks great from above and below. Choose to take the nature trail past the park’s pristine natural springs and sinkholes, or bring your scuba gear (and current certification) to swim through one of the largest underwater cave systems in the continental US. Either way, be sure to pack something to throw on the grill at one of the outdoor picnic pavilions when you explorations are over.

your family can enjoy (and afford!) Looking for a fun weekend outing? Take advantage of Northern Florida’s mild temperatures on a family day-trip to one of these nearby State and National Parks.

Little Talbot Island State Park Everybody’s going surfing at Little Talbot Island State Park, where over five miles of white sandy beaches rest undeveloped for your family’s pleasure. This small barrier island boasts dunes, maritime forests, and just enough break for the boarder in the family. Whether you take a guided paddle tour, or investigate the sites yourself, keep an eye out for wildlife – river otters, bobcats, and a vast variety of native and migratory birds have been known to flock to the petite preserve.

Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park Need a way to make learning fun again? If so, it may be time to rally your troops for an exciting, educational adventure at the site of the Battle of Olustee, Florida’s largest Civil War conflict. Read about the 1864 battle that hosted over 10,000 soldiers (including the famous 54th Massachusetts infantry) as you

walk the 1-mile trail through the historic pine forests. Don’t retreat to Jacksonville for lunch (as the Union soldiers did after five hours of fighting). The state’s first historic site keeps a family picnic area where you and your outfit can recover before marching home.

Manatee Springs State Park Winter is the best time to plan a trip to Manatee Springs State Park, where West Indian manatees swim upriver during winter to escape the cooler waters downstream. Bring your snorkeling gear to look for signs of the gentle sea cows then relax with a thermos of your favorite hot beverage while the kids enjoy the picnic area playground. After spending a while at the headwaters of the spring, take a walk on the nearby Nature Coast State Trail – a 32 mile route once used by the Atlantic Coastline Railroad that now promises some of the best views of nature in the region. To learn more about these parks and others in the area, visit floridastateparks.org where you’ll find hours, maps and other details.

Ever had that moment where you’re hard at work in your home or office, and someone comes in and turns on the light? Suddenly the room is transformed! Read on to discover how light remodeling can revitalize your environment and your mood. Fight blues with blue Researchers from the National Academy of Sciences proved that blue light helps people cope with emotional challenges and maintain more consistent moods over time. Blue light consists of rays which are ultra-bright on the color spectrum and typically experienced outdoors. The Academy’s evidence adds to the onslaught of data suggesting that dim or weak yellow lighting can disrupt the production and regulation of hormones like serotonin and melatonin, leading to negative changes in body, mood and behavior. To get more blue light all through the winter, consider purchasing full spectrum light bulbs to mimic natural light in your home office and try to work near windows whenever possible.

Open up any drapes or blinds to get energized in the morning, and avoid spending time in dimly lit areas throughout your day.

Respect your body clock Until the last 200 years, people lived according to the sun’s calendar, resting in the dark and working in the light. Now, so many of us stay up toiling into late hours of evening that it’s easy to forget our bodies’ sensitivity to light. The presence of bright white or blue light late in the evening could disrupt our natural rhythms and ability to sleep. Keep dimmable lights in your living and dining room, and consider making every dinner romantic with candlelight. Rely on soft yellow lamplight for evening reading, and avoid harsh overhead lights in the bedroom after 6 p.m.

What about things like bullets? Herb kimmel

As parents, cold weather is something we worry about. We fret over our children as we send them outside or when we visit friends and family up north. Though it’s true that only germs can cause colds, it turns out that the old wives’ tale is true – cold weather increases your chances of catching a cold.

DON’T

Catch a

By truman carter

Cold

According to the website dumbscientist.com, when extremities such as feet are cold, our bodies conserve heat for the torso and brain. Those parts of our body need to remain the warmest, but it reduces blood flow to the cold extremities. Cutting off blood flow reduces the supply of white blood cells, which our immune systems use to combat germs and illnesses.

This phenomenon was tested in a 2005 study where 90 people put their bare feet into ice water for 20 minutes, while 90 others did not. Of the 90 “cold feet” participants, 29 percent caught a cold over the next five days. Conversely, only nine percent of the “dry feet” control group expressed any cold symptoms. There’s another possible reason behind this phenomena. When we’re cold, our immune system focuses on keeping us warm to stave off hypothermia, which may take away from its ability to fight off illness. Moreover, dry air — often accompanying colder weather — also has been found to lower one’s immune system.

You still have to contract a virus to actually catch a cold, but being in cold weather can make you more susceptible.

Love Thy

Yet, according to a 2010 study by the PEW Research Center, less than half of Americans know most or all of their neighbors by name. With busy schedules and happening online communities, many forgo the benefits of knowing the neighbors in order to keep their home space free of social obligations.

By elizabeth Putfark

Neighbor

How well do you know the folks next door? Saying “Hi de ho, Good neighbor” a little more often could benefit your community’s health and your own, without sacrificing your personal space. For the neighborhood Research continues to prove that convivial neighborhoods have lower crime rates, better social control over community issues, and higher likelihood of quelling local disturbances. Now, scientists claim that neighborhood social cohesion can also be linked to a 22 percent lower risk of heart attack, based on a 2014 study published in J Epidemiol Community Health.

Why choose?

Stay honest

Strike a balance in your neighborly liaisons with the following three tips, guaranteed to have you reaching across the fence with confidence.

If you’re in a hurry when your neighbor stops to chat, be direct. They will appreciate your candor and feel relieved that they can be similarly forthright on anti-social days. Besides, making up a false excuse has added consequences in close proximity – it’s much harder to fib about where you are and what you’re doing when exposed to plain view.

Establish a signal

Give to get

Whether it’s an open garage door or an extra exterior light, have a signal that lets your neighbors know you’re welcoming walk-in’s. You might also tell them about certain times you’re free during an average week, indirectly suggesting that other times it might be best to call first!

Like it or not, that awkward conversation while you look for your keys is worth the two minutes it takes out of your day. do the cheesy wave, yell “Hello,” and ask about the kids. It may feel rote at first, but simple gestures can add security and comfort to both your days.

Holiday

Meal I love holiday family gatherings, but cooking for a crowd can be a struggle. How can you make enough to serve eight, 12, even 20 people without too much time, money or hassle? This cheesy baked tortellini is just the answer. It’s hearty, comforting and perfect for a large group. This recipe serves 12.

Ingredients: • Olive oil • 4 cups marinara sauce • 2/3 cup mascarpone cheese • ½ cup Italian parsley, chopped • ¼ cup fresh thyme leaves, chopped • 2 pounds purchased cheese tortellini • 4 ounces smoked mozzarella, thinly sliced • ½ cup grated Parmesan

42 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

for the Masses Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly oil two 8- by 8-inch baking dishes.

Whisk the sauce, mascarpone cheese, parsley and thyme in a large bowl to blend. Cook the tortellini in a large pot of boiling salted water until just tender, about 2 minutes. Drain. Add the tortellini to the sauce and toss to coat. Transfer the tortellini mixture to the prepared baking dish. Top the mixture with the smoked mozzarella and Parmesan. Cover and bake until the sauce bubbles and the cheeses on top melt, about 30 minutes. Photo and recipe courtesy of Yummly.com.

Tricks to Pack a

Stay-Fresh You love make-ahead meals, but soups and casseroles are getting a bit boring. It’s summer, after all – bring in the fresh produce! Here’s how you can make a salad on Sunday that will stay fresh until Friday. Choose the right container. Plastic BPA-free tupperware is a good choice because it’s lightweight yet durable. Pick a container that’s shallow and wide – this will give salad ingredients room to breathe and prevent sogginess. Add the lettuce first. After washing, make sure the greens are completely dry before packing them. Fill the container one third full. Add veggies, beans and fruit next. Pick produce like cucumbers,

Salad

cherry tomatoes, peppers, chickpeas, corn, grapes, blueberries and carrots – they hold up well, even after days! As with the lettuce, make sure each piece of produce is dry before packing.

Add protein like grilled chicken, hard-boiled eggs, cheese, quinoa and nuts. If you’re packing several salads for the week, add the protein to Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays’ salads but hold off on Thursday and Friday – produce will stay fresh in a container for about three days. Pack the dressing separately in a small, airtight container and wait to add until right before you’re ready to eat. If you add the dressing too early, you’ll end up with a wilted salad, so it’s best to save this step for last.

Feeding a family isn’t cheap these days and it’s only getting more expensive, but saving money at the grocery store is a great way to give your budget a break. Follow my six simple steps to cut your grocery bill in half.

Check your pantry. Take stock of what you have on hand. Pull everything out and write it down. Do the same thing for your freezer and fridge. No use spending money re-buying an item you already have. Check expiration dates, too. If you have something that will expire in the next month, make sure it’s included in your meal plans. Wasted food is like throwing money away, and no one wants to do that!

Make a menu plan. You wouldn’t bake a cake without a recipe, so why do your shopping without a plan? Plan your menu by looking at what’s in your pantry and what’s on sale, and choose meals that can cross-over. For example, cooking a whole chicken on Monday gives you leftovers that can be used for tacos, casseroles and soups throughout the week. Stretch that meat and save your family money! Have trouble coming up with recipes? Check out your local library. They always have a plethora of cookbooks from which to choose.

Make a grocery list and stick to it. Include all the items you will need to prepare all your meals, and categorize your list to make shopping easier. While shopping, stick to your list. Grocery stores have end caps for a reason – to entice consumers into purchasing those last minute goodies. Overbuying due to impulse purchases can cause you to spend significantly more than you budgeted. The more you stick to that grocery list, the more money you will save. 40 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

Shop your local grocery ads.

Shop biweekly or monthly.

See what items are on sale that can help you round out your pantry. No store loyalty needed when trying to save money, folks; go for the stores that offer the best savings. Additionally, take advantage of case lot sales to stock up on canned goods when they’re at rock bottom prices. When you’re buying items on sale, don’t just look at what your family will use this week, but think about what your family will use in the next month. Planning ahead allows you to only purchase things when they are at their lowest price. Most grocery stores have smart phone apps where you can clip digital coupons. This is a great way to save on items too!

Remember, the more trips you take to the store, the more money and time you spend. Who just “runs” into the store and comes out with only the one thing they needed? We rarely do. Those impulse purchases are what add up. Shopping once a month saves us from those splurge purchases.

Pay with cash. When you have cash, you know you can only spend a certain amount. Decide how much you will budget for each grocery trip, and have the cash in hand when you go grocery shopping to keep you within your designated budget.

By sticking to a budget, menu planning, making a list and paying cash, you can cut your grocery bill in half!

Thanksgiving

Kitchen Calamity By Sarah G. Mason

A bustling kitchen, crowded house and plenty of turkey to go ‘round – at last, Thanksgiving is here! As you prepare for the feast, you’re bound to run into a few “uh-oh” moments, but here are a few tips to avoid an all-out Thanksgiving emergency. Too Hot, Too Cold Is your turkey cooking unevenly? When the bird’s breast cooks faster than its thighs, it can cause overbrowning. The solution? Cover the breast lightly with aluminum foil and keep on cooking.

Veggie Oops With all the attention on the turkey, you may have forgotten those vegetables in the oven. So what to do with overcooked veggies? Puree them in a food processer with a little cream, salt, pepper and butter. No one ever has to know!

Frozen Freakout If your turkey is stubbornly frozen, don’t be tempted to stick it in the microwave or thaw it under warm water – these encourage the growth of harmful bacteria. Instead, place the frozen bird in a sink full of

cold water, replacing the water every 30 minutes until thawed.

Gravy Gaffes Is your gravy looking a bit lackluster? Enhance the color and flavor with a dash of soy sauce. Did you accidently burn it? Fold in a tablespoon of peanut butter to smooth out that smoky taste. Is your gravy a bit too salty? Try stirring in ½ teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon vinegar.

Mushy Stuffing When cooking stuffing inside the turkey, you run the risk of pulling out a mushy mess. But not to fear – after you remove the stuffing from the bird, simply put it under the broiler for a few minutes. It will crisp right up!

Good luck with all your Thanksgiving day dilemmas!

Cheese with that Would you like some

Wine and cheese go together like peas and carrots. However, some varieties go together better than others. Read on to learn which kind of cheese best complements the wine you’re serving so you can delight taste buds and impress your guests.

wine?

a Guide to Pairing and Sharing the Perfect Wine and Cheese Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is a great wine to serve, especially during spring and summer months. It is light, citrusy and refreshing. Place sharp, smelly cheeses like Asiago, Parmesan and Festina next to your bottle and encourage guests to sip and snack so that the wine brings out the flavor in the cheese; and vice versa.

Merlot Merlot is a medium to heavy bodied wine that is filled with rich, plum flavor. Its most popularly served during fall and winter months and can stand up to sharp, tangy cheeses. Try serving Gorgonzola or a sharp white or yellow Wisconsin cheddar solo or with buttery crackers to balance out the strong flavors of each.

Champagne If you have a celebration in store, toast with your favourite bubbly and a variety of rich and savory cheese. Brie and Camembert cheese are so silky and rich, they should be a sin! These soft cheeses spread easily over crusty, warm bread, crispy crackers, can be warmed up, and even taste great on fruit.

Zinfandel This light and airy fruity blush wine is pink in color and has a tangy after taste. It pairs beautifully with soft cheeses like Goat Cheese, Blue Cheese, Gouda and Feta, but also firmer, crisp cheese like Asiago. It’s an ideal summer wine and can be made into sangria as well.

Pinot Noir A favorite among many; pinot noir can be a mid to full bodied wine that is bold and filled with black cherry and chocolate notes. Be sure to serve cheeses like Swiss, Gruyere and Feta to enhance your overall dining experience, and even set out some dark chocolate for an after dinner drink and dessert! Whether you want to host a wine and cheese pairing party or simply offer your guests an unforgettable experience, these wines and cheeses pair perfectly and are sure to please. 38 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

Foodie

Want to get the most out of your dining experience? Take these tips for navigating restaurant menus with aplomb. Use your senses Know that feeling you get when you smell movie theatre popcorn? Let your local eatery influence your palate in the same way before making your selection. You’ll be better prepared for the dish you get, and more apt to order within the chef’s expertise.

Know the meaning of “Specials.” Unless they feature select seasonal items such as fish or fresh vegetables, specials are generally trial dishes that haven’t earned a place on the official menu yet. Order your entrée from tried and true items that have already made the cut, and if you feel like experimenting, do it with an appetizer – they’re less expensive and easier to share.

352.332.4186 1005 NW 76TH BLVD, GAINESVILLE FL

Ask deliberately

Don’t expect your server to be either an honest critic or expert on your personal preferences by asking things like, “What’s good?” and “How are the burgers?” Instead, decide what you really want to know, and ask that. For instance, “What’s your most popular dish?” or, “If I like ___ and ___, do you think I’ll like ___?”

Pay attention to method Look past ingredients and consider cooking method before making your choice. The items that take lengthy or skillful preparation – think searing, roasting and marinating – have proven they’re worth the extra effort.

Stick to the menu Whenever possible, order menu items as-is. While it may be fun to flaunt your personality with the way you like your fish, changing a few features of an entrée could throw off the balance of your meal. Even if you’re uncertain about a chef’s particular combination, elect to give your palate an adventure (and cut your server a break!).

By sarah G. mason Red Wine vs. White Wine

Swap Make the

In our ongoing quest to healthy living, ingredient substitutions are all the rage. But when you substitute an avocado for mayonnaise or Greek yogurt for sour cream, exactly how big is the payoff? We’ve got the answer.

Avocado vs. Mayo When you substitute one avocado in place of mayonnaise in recipes like chicken salad or on a sandwich, you’ll save 230

calories, 15 carbs and a whopping 18 grams of fat per serving. Way to go, avocado.

Greek Yogurt vs. Regular Yogurt Plain Greek yogurt has about 130 calories per 8-ounce serving, where plain yogurt has 63 calories. However, Greek yogurt can have up to 22 grams of protein in a single serving!

If you’re looking strictly at calories, carbs and fat, red and white wines are nearly identical. Be wary of sweet red wines like moscato, though. A single serving of moscato has roughly 150 more calories and 9 more grams of carbs than a dry white wine.

Greek Yogurt vs. Sour Cream Plop a dollop of Greek yogurt on that taco, why don’t you? This substitution will save you 84 calories, 5 grams of carb and 21 grams of fat. Not to mention, you’ll gain about 19 grams of protein for every 8 ounces of Greek yogurt you use.

Whole Grain vs. White Bread In a single slice, you’ll save 166 calories and 30 grams of carbs by switching from white to whole grain. Curious about wheat bread? The difference is

negligible – white and wheat bread each have roughly 260 calories and 50 grams of carbs in a 100 gram serving.

Dark Chocolate vs. Milk Chocolate Here again, the difference is scant. Dark chocolate has slightly more fat, while milk chocolate has more carbs. If you’re ignoring other benefits (like the antioxidants in dark chocolate), let your taste be the decider!

Frozen Yogurt vs. Ice Cream They’re both creamy, melty and full of sugar, so what’s the difference? Frozen yogurt still racks up the calories and carbs, but it will save you in fat; a 100-gram serving of generic frozen yogurt has less than two grams of fat. The ice cream? Over 10 grams!

Thanksgiving made affordable.

Treat

Yourself Joy Bauer on living, parenting and snacking to the fullest

Interview by Lauren Douglass

Joy Bauer’s name is synonymous with healthy living. Leading health expert from nBC’s Today Show and host of the Joy Fit Club series, Bauer earned her Master of Science degree in nutrition before launching the get-fit initiatives that landed her on TV. now, the new York Times Bestselling author and mother of three shares the pleasures of healthy living through her own food line, nourish Snacks, an online service which delivers delicious wholesome munchies right to your front door. So what’s the scoop on your new launch, Nourish Snacks? I’ve spent the last two years sourcing ingredients from all around the globe to create these delicious, yummy, ubberhealthy concoctions. All 30 flavors are naturally gluten and dairy free with no GMO’s, no artificial anything and no harmful preservatives. They’re all under 200 calories, but packed with the right amount of protein, fiber and antioxidants to keep you feeling satisfied and fresh. Currently we’re selling everything e-commerce only. You can order a la carte, or join the “Snack Club.” If you join, every month you get a box filled with a delicious assortment of snacks. The first is a sampler – 20 of our favorites – then you go onto your online dashboard and rate them so that the next month will be personalized with your favorites. We always chuck in at least one of our newest flavors so you have something new to sample, too! We have all sorts of different flavors, like the Cocoa Loco, with dark chocolate chia oat clusters, and the Cashew Colada, which pairs roasted California cashews with this insanely delicious dried pineapple from Sri Lanka. I get the farmers to pick it right before it ripens so that the fructose is actually lower, but it is so yummy and chewy that you would swear that there was added sugar!

You already have a busy career as a health expert and nutritionist. What was your motivation behind starting Nourish Snacks? 36 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

My whole mission is to help people make healthy choices in order to live fulfilling, smart and energetic lives. In my career, I’m always hearing problematic snack stories. We love to snack, often because we don’t have the time to make meals. I wanted to produce incredibly delicious but healthy snacks that were also super convenient at the same time.

What are some of the challenges that you’ve faced in creating this new company? Money! [Laughs] In the beginning, trying to get ourselves off the ground with personal financing was tough. Then it was more of just the nuts and bolts. The packaging, the font size and the printing, and of course the importing. We source from around the globe, which means balancing the timing of the different ingredients coming in and juggling that with the seasons. I’m very OCD and anal about all of this stuff, and because I take quality so seriously, dealing with all the moving parts at the same time was the biggest challenge for me.

So what are some of your hopes and goals for Nourish Snacks? I want to make delicious healthy snacks available to everybody, in all different varieties, in order to make healthy eating simple. Changing your lifestyle is hard, but no one should feel like they’re compromising on flavor because of their journey toward health. If you’re craving something salty and crunchy, we’ve got Mr. Popular. If you like

spicy, we’ve got Holy Habanero or Pistachio OMG. If you like sweet we have the Cocoa Loco, or Mrs. Popular, which mixes halfpopped kernels with 72 percent dark chocolate chips. So we have all of these really creative delicious blends that you’d never guess were so healthy!

For parents, introducing healthy foods can be very daunting. How do you recommend incorporating more healthy foods into their children’s diets? By making it taste delicious! When my kids were little, I think one of the most successful ways for getting them to buy into healthy eating was to get them involved with it. During the week, each kid had their own day when they were responsible for making dinner with me. They would do the menu, go with me to the store and be involved with all the prep. I think having them connect with the food and be involved in how it gets prepared is so important to developing healthy habits. Also, never give up on vegetables. You know that witching hour just before dinner when the kids are opening the pantries and looking for anything? I made it a rule that no one was allowed to eat during that time period except what was on the kitchen table, and I would always put out huge platters of vegetables. It’s amazing what your kids will eat when they’re starving and you eliminate the other options!

What are some healthy changes that parents can make today, this moment, to make themselves lead a healthier life? Start your morning with a protein-rich breakfast. Protein in the morning helps to jump start your metabolism and regulate

You got to be careful if you don’t know where you’re going, because you might not get there. Yogi Berra

Overall, I like to keep a 90:10 food philosophy. That means that if you go out of your way to eat healthy 90 percent of the time, it’s okay to give yourself some wiggle-room the other 10 percent!

You’ve met and worked with so many people through the years. What do you think helps people lead a happy life?

Tell me a little about the Today Show. What has been your most memorable experience there? I’ve been there 10 years, so lots of memorable experiences! One of the most powerful things that people can do when they get up in the morning is just think of three things they’re grateful for, or three things that they’re proud of. That automatically puts you in a good mood! If you can religiously think of three things every single morning that give you a boost, it can be truly life-changing.

Holiday

Sweep By Kelly Herman

It’s hard enough to get everything cleaned before the holidays, let alone to summon the willpower to do so. Luckily, we’ve got a few clutter-busting strategies you can use to get your place spotless. The catch? You’ve only got a month! The great thing about this cleaning method is that it’s broken into day-by-day segments; much more manageable than trying to do all that work one day before company arrives. Stop procrastinating and start sweeping, one day at a time. Keep containers handy Start with a schedule Just like you would schedule a doctor’s appointment, do your cleaning around your pre-existing schedule. Set aside a 30-minute gap once a day, or a two-hour period twice a week to devote to the task. Don’t fool yourself though; if you usually set aside time to nap or watch TV, don’t overlap it! You need those moments of normalcy to encourage the cleaning. Bonus Tip: On your first cleaning spree, time your progress. When do you start to get tired? Distracted? Stop then, and make sure the rest of your scheduled cleaning sprees are limited to that time span. Pay attention to how much gets done in that time and plan the frequency of your sprees that way. 32 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

When we organize a space, we often go to the store and buy storage first. Avoid that impulse – it encourages you to keep the clutter! Instead, start in one problem area and carry around three or four paper bags: One for trash, one for donating, one for items you’re keeping in that room and one for items in the wrong spot. Smaller bags will help you see how much you actually need to keep, and once you have them organized, you can go out and buy the containers that will fit the needs of that space. Bonus Tip: To keep spaces organized in the future, only buy containers you can’t live without. Since you’re buying fewer containers, spring for the ones you really enjoy or the ones that make you smile, even if they’re pricier. They will be worth it in the long run if they motivate you to clean.

Sort by style When you’re finally sorting the things that are in their rightful place, take it one step further by grouping the items that are there. Put all the pens together, all the jeans and pants separate, and put cans of beans to one side and tomato sauce to the other. That way, you can start to recognize how much of specific items you have, and can even recycle or donate more things based on having an overload. Bonus Tip: If you do this early enough with your pantry and fridge, you’ll know which items to eat more of during your 30 days. At the end, you’ll have room for holiday foods!

Time to

Recharge By Debbie travis

The beginning of the year is filled with fresh hopes and resolutions. But I think most of us, as we pack away all the holiday ribbons and lights, long for a bit of a breather before embarking on exciting new goals.

If you have the opportunity to take a week away from kids, shopping and responsibilities, then grab it and enjoy. If that’s not an option, I recommend some armchair travelling to warm climates where relaxation is the order of the day, every day.

The islands in the Caribbean are magical destinations that have produced the basics of a design style that is now a classic. The roots of Plantation Style – plantation blinds, gleaming mahogany furnishings and lattice details – stem from these areas rich in wood and bamboo, hot sun, sparkling water and glorious flora. The elements of this tropical style can be transferred easily to homes anywhere, and are sure to imbue a calm mood. A bedroom is the natural space to transform into your personal island retreat; after all, this is where dreams come alive. 30 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

I visited Jamaica with a group of friends recently and discovered firsthand how the sunny, nurturing environment refreshed and recharged us all. The bedrooms at Sundown Villa, www.uniquevillasofjamaica.com, feature the quintessential mahogany four-poster beds and dressers. The simple palette of the purest white mixed with sea and sky blues helped to keep the room cool and inviting. I have borrowed the inviting elements of this style for bedrooms seen on my TV shows, and they are always a hit. Here are some tips for creating your own Caribbean style on a budget; dream about it now, and then when you are rested up, try out one or two of the ideas.

A mahogany four-poster bed can be an expensive proposition, but you can design and build your own using simply carved newel posts meant for a stair railing for the bed posts. We attached the newel posts to sturdy 4x4s with epoxy glue. Choose a red mahogany stain for the wood, and finish with a high-gloss varnish. Make up the bed with white linens, an antique-looking lace bedspread and soft-blue blanket. Transform an old dresser in two ways. Paint it white and add small island motifs such as tropical flowers or leaves, either freehand or with stencils, then finish with brass handles. Or, create your own mahogany antique dresser with stain to match the bed. Large plank wood floors also can be stained dark, or paint them a pastel white shade and cover with a lightweight area rug. I always think about the textures of the materials on a bedroom floor, since this is the room for bare feet. I like a soft, warm landing when I touch down in the morning. Window coverings should complement the style. Start with plantation shutters for an authentic look. If more insulation is required, here's an opportunity to add Caribbean flair with a brightly colored fabric hung from a rod in front of the shutters. For warm nights choose an overhead fan with palm-frond blades. Complete the look with paintings or posters of the beautiful flora and fauna of the islands, and your holiday has begun.

Tests are a great tool used to discover strengths and weaknesses in both a student’s learning and the teaching process. However, throughout the years, high-stakes tests have become the centerpiece of educational systems. Because of this, tremendous stress is placed on our children from an early age. While your child’s teacher can prepare them educationally, you can take action to help your child deal with the stress and anxiety that so often accompany test taking.

Helping Your Kids

De-Stress before the big test

students are at that point in time. Explain that the purpose for this test is to look for weak points that they, their teacher and their school can improve on.

Practice Breathing

Remind Your Child of the Purpose of the Test

Assure Your Child that They’re More than Just a Score

Tell your child that they will do best on their test when they’re relaxed and confident. To help them build relaxation and relieve anxiety, show them some basic deep breathing techniques. Encourage them to lower their head and close their eyes. Then have them inhale through the nose, concentrating on feeling the breath in their lungs. Have them hold the breath for one to two seconds and then breathe out slowly through the mouth. Encourage them to visualize the stress leaving their body with each exhale. Tell your child to practice this technique and use it whenever they feel anxiety beginning to creep up.

Many children don’t realize that a major reason for standardized testing is to monitor educational performance for the school system as a whole, not just for the individual student. Relate the test to a photograph where many people, places or things are shown. Explain that while their performance on the test is one thing shown, the test can also show how successful their teacher has been in teaching their class and also how well their entire state is performing. Tell them that this “snapshot” doesn’t show everything they’ve learned, just as a photograph doesn’t show an entire picture, but rather gives an idea of where the

Ensure that your child understands that there are many different types of intelligence, some of which cannot be measured with a standardized test. Remind your child of all of their stand out abilities like athletics, drama or music. Let them know that their worth can never be whittled down to a number, and the most important thing they can do is to simply do their best.

Many of us remember being shy as children, and we watch painfully as our own kids experience the same uncertainty, hesitation and discomfort that we did. Though most children are perfectly happy as quiet individuals, some can benefit from a little extra care and attention.

children in this way can lower their self-esteem and may actually cause them to withdraw more. Be supportive of your child’s disposition. Hug them and let them know that the world is lucky to have a kind, happy, gentle person like them. Help your child through social situations by giving them the chance to talk, but without pushing conversation on them. Similarly, resist the temptation to put your child on the spot or to “force them out of their shell.” You may love it if they tell a story from school or play piano for company, but it’s never a good idea to spring a performance on your reserved child. Instead, it’s better to ask for their permission beforehand. “Grandma’s coming over and I’d love for you to tell her about your class project,” or “Uncle Jim is stopping by tonight, will you play your piano song for him?” By asking first, you’re respecting your child’s comfort zone.

If you still think there is something “wrong” with your shy child, ask yourself this: do they make eye contact easily? Are they polite? Do they seem happy with themselves? Of course, many shy children Let your child know that there’s nothing wrong with being will have certain reservations, but as long as their behavior is reserved. It’s everyone’s Responsibility

Dog Bite Prevent a

By Kat freestone

no matter whether you own a dog or not, dog bite prevention is important for everyone. Though nearly half of the 4.5 million american dog-bite victims are children, kids aren’t the only ones at risk. a surprisingly high number of postal employees are also on the receiving end of dog bites each year. It makes sense, seeing as mailmen must come onto properties with unrestrained dogs.

Before you say “Don’t worry, my dog won’t bite,” don’t be so sure. Any dog can bite, and even the friendliest Fidos may see a man in a uniform with a strange box as a threat to the family. If a mailman approaches the door, it’s safest to stick your dog in a separate room before answering. Don’t attempt to hold your dog back while signing for a package and don’t rely on screen doors to block your dog’s way out. Also, remind children to keep the family dog safe and secure inside the house. Sometimes, dogs see the exchange of packages from handler to child as a threat and will attack. Encourage your child to ask for help from another sibling or family member when the postman comes to the door.

There’s some work that can be done on your dog’s end, too. Limit their time chained or caged. Though this may seem counterintuitive, especially for protective canines, locking dogs up indefinitely can actually exacerbate or create aggression problems. Dogs need adequate stimulation and when they don’t get it they can take their frustration out through aggression. In addition, learn to recognize canine body language. For instance, a wagging tail doesn’t always signal happiness – it’s merely excitement. Also, yawning doesn’t always mean a dog is tired – it can signal stress. By understanding your dog’s body language, you can read their feelings and anticipate their actions to help prevent the worst.

A Positive

Pregnancy At first, I shrugged off being extra tired, having more headaches than usual, and feeling uncomfortably sensitive in the shower, but after a few weeks I decided to take a pregnancy test. Low and behold, it was finally positive. Besides being overjoyed, my mind began to race. I heard of all kinds of horror stories from my girlfriends about being pregnant – the nausea, the swelling, the mood swings. I dreaded all of the things that were about to happen to me physically and emotionally. Having gone through it now, I’ve got a different story to tell – my pregnancy experience has been completely positive and yours can be too. Now, I know that some elements of your pregnancy are absolutely out of your control, but other aspects of it lie in your own hands – like your diet. At 10 weeks, I was waiting for morning sickness to kick in. At 12 weeks, I was waiting for morning sickness to kick in. Once I entered my second trimester with absolutely zero issues, I knew I was in the clear! After talking with my OB nurse, she’s convinced that my diet helped me beat the infamous sickness that so many women suffer through. I ate very minimal carbohydrates and sugary foods and consumed large amounts of protein. I had a green smoothie every morning that contained kale, protein powder and pineapple. I munched chicken and veggie bowls that I made ahead of time every Sunday to enjoy during my work week. I also snacked on cheese sticks and hard boiled eggs. This diet made me feel amazing and I had no problem getting out of bed each morning.

If anyone understands the stress and heartache that infertility can cause, it’s me. My husband and I tried to get pregnant for almost two years, and we underwent a number of fertility treatments to help our “struggle” along. as soon as I made peace with the fact that I would probably not have a baby, I got pregnant!

Here’s a perfect “preggo” smoothie! • 2 packed cups chopped kale leaves • 1 cup fresh or frozen pineapple • 1 banana • 1 cup vanilla protein powder

• 1/2 cup pineapple juice • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk Blend ingredients until smooth. COURTESY OF YUMMLY.COM

I exercised a lot as well. (At almost six months, I’m still going strong!). In the first trimester, I continued to jog a few miles every other day, took my dogs for daily walks, weight trained and participated in the group fitness classes – all things I had done before getting my positive test. I’m also not one to lounge around, so I kept busy in my home and yard. It’s as if I didn’t have time to let the dreaded symptoms set in and get to me. I wish that I had a friend tell me that pregnancy can be wonderful. Of course, there will be down days, but with a positive mindset, a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, you can overcome the bad and focus on the good. Trust in the power of positive thinking – it goes a long way. Most importantly, a fit and active lifestyle isn’t just good for you, but also for that bun in the oven! So here’s to a positive pregnancy! 20 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

Shake, shake a leg Sing, sing a song Researchers in Finland conducted an experiment that proved prenatal recognition of musical notes. 12 pregnant women listened to the same CD of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star loudly five times a week during their final trimester. When babies were played the song after birth, their brainwaves evidenced recognition of the familiar tune. Significantly, when played the same song with a few altered notes, they recognized only those notes which were present in the original version. Don’t break out the Mozart yet. Scientists suggest that prenatal song recognition be used primarily as a way to teach babies basic songs that can help to sooth them in the first months after birth.

Experts at Healthline.com recommend a bit of boogie in the latter stages of the pregnancy as a way to keep new moms in line with their changing center of gravity. Low-impact dancing can help establish a new center. To find your new balance, try tucking your pelvis under and keeping your ribs tucked, engaging your stomach muscles to hold the position. Your joints may feel more flexible in the final two trimesters due to hormonal changes, but don’t let your limberness go too far. Know your limits, as looser muscles can lead to less control and faster injuries. So long as you avoid jumping, leaping or hoping as you twirl about, obstetricians suggest that dancing can keep your body in better shape and better balance throughout your pregnancy’s term.

Whether you’re flush with new love, or have been married for years, these simple ways to show affection are sure to make your partner feel appreciated and adored. • Brew their morning coffee or tea for them • Leave a little love note in their lunch or on the bathroom mirror • Make a point to compliment them every day • Boast about them in front of others • Make their favorite dinner

• Take over some of the household chores they usually do • Let your partner sleep in one day while you get the kids ready (or take the dogs out!) • Give them a quick neck, hand or foot massage • Bring them lunch at work (or dinner if they have to work late) • Warm up their car for them in the winter • Tivo their favorite show for them Be creative, but remember you don't need to break your back, the budget, or the world-record for romance to give your partner the support they need. Ask, don’t tell

Usually, if you decide to apologize, you have some idea about what you’ve done wrong, but don’t be so sure! Often times we misunderstand how we’ve hurt someone, and so we apologize before fully realizing what we’ve done wrong. Take a moment to reflect on the entire situation from the other person’s point of view before you try to make amends. Recognize what you did wrong in their eyes, and be willing to forgive yourself, too. Appreciating exactly how you erred can help you avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

Everyone has their own side of a story, but try not to lead with yours. Start with a sincere, specific apology, and ask them what you can do to make your relationship strong again. Chances are, they’ll meet you in the middle and show that they understand your side, too, but even if they don’t, they will surely appreciate your willingness to put aside your pride.

Pick your moment You may be ready to apologize right now, but be respectful of the other person’s time and space. Send them a note asking when they’re available to talk, and make time in your own schedule to sit down together when you won’t be looking at your watch.

Wait, as long as they need Depending on the situation, immediate forgiveness may not be an option – don’t lose hope! Be patient and allow the other person time to think through what you’ve said, and let them know that you’re ready to talk again whenever they are. Trust us, no matter how long you have to wait, you’ll rest easier knowing that they have heard how you feel.

Saying Yes How “people pleasing” can

RUIN Your Relationships and

Sabotage Your 16 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

Health

As a therapist, I am trained to look beyond a surface situation to find the underlying meaning. Throughout my practice, I’ve discovered that with people who struggle with setting limits, usually there is a deep-seeded desire to be liked, to be considered “nice”, or to avoid what is often labeled as “confrontation”. Typical reasons for difficulty with saying NO can include … • “It feels mean.” • "I want people to like me.” • “I worry about making people mad.” • “I would rather make an excuse or avoid someone if I can’t do what they want.” • "I feel guilty if I disappoint someone."

Do you identity with any of these statements? What may not be overtly apparent is that underneath all of these reasons, what people are really struggling with, is FEAR. Oftentimes people (women especially) who excessively (and to their detriment) agree to things they don't want to do or have time to do, do so because of FEAR. The fear of

rejection, the fear of abandonment, the fear of loss or even physical harm rests behind this form of people pleasing. I believe that one big reason we fear upsetting, disappointing, or angering someone is because - deep down, we fear being alone. Fear is never a solid basis from which to build a relationship – or a life.

because you are feeling powerless, tired and used. You may actually lose the very reason why you did all that people-pleasing in the first place: closeness. That warm fuzzy feeling you were hoping for cannot come to you when you feel used or abused. Healthy attachment and connection cannot be built from a place of powerlessness.

Now let me say that to an extent, this is normal. We are social creatures, and we have evolved to be in relationship with others who at times need our help as we do theirs. Not that long ago, being alone as a woman once meant serious physical and financial vulnerability.

Once we become tired and overdrawn emotionally, financially or physically from not caring for ourselves, we are in danger of becoming angry, frightened or resentful. Your self-esteem can plummet because you did not first honor yourself.

But there is more than an anthropological root to this when it becomes a problem in your life. Poor boundaries or the inability to set limits, in many cases, is linked to a childlike fear of abandonment. For some, this grew from unmet childhood emotional needs or for others, you were taught that pleasing others was the key to social success and sometimes even the key to love.

But is this true for you now as an adult? No! I argue that in fact poor boundaries, the inability to communicate limits in a respectful, kind but assertive manner is a threat to both your relationship health and your physical and emotional health. Boundaries are one vital key to healthy, sustainable and close relationships. In fact, when we avoid saying No, setting limits, and communicating our objections and needs, we sabotage our relationships close or casual. Research has repeatedly found a connection between stress and health issues. But it is the sort of stress born out of a feeling of powerlessness that has the most adverse effects on health. And what can leave you feeling more powerless than poor boundaries, lacking the skills to set limits and communicate needs, or feeling overused and undervalued?

We all want positive feedback and to feel like we helped resolve a problem, but by allowing this mistreatment and lack of boundary setting, you open yourself up to attraction from an abuser or self-centered person, which then dilutes your perception to seeing others as willing to overlook your needs. This creates social distance and loneliness as you unconsciously search for ways to feel safer.

So how do you start creating health in your life with appropriate boundaries? How can you learn to say, “No” more often? Start by thinking about and identifying your boundaries. Begin thinking about what feels right for you in different situations. These can include emotional, physical, sexual, spiritual, verbal, social and professional boundaries. Pay attention to how you feel when you say yes to a request and write it down. Does it feel good and respectful or does it sit poorly with you? Do you feel scared or uneasy? Is there a “gut feeling” you are avoiding? Look for any physical signs related to the task: headaches, stomach aches, sweating, and other bodily sensations.

NO! They will use you more.

Start with small limits and become aware of the language of assertive communication. For starting small, maybe the next time your meal is served improperly – say something. If it is undercooked, send it back. Or maybe, the next time a retailer asks for your email, say “Thanks for asking, but I don’t give it out.” Take note of how it feels for you.

In addition, they won’t respect you as much, you won’t feel good about yourself, your life, or THEM. And then guess what? You may actually end up resenting them and lose your temper or be passive aggressive

Don’t apologize for being assertive. Apologies are reserved for when you have injured, harmed or otherwise caused a problem for someone that you genuinely think requires a polite “I am sorry”. Get out of

It seems counterintuitive right? If you agree to do what people ask, shouldn’t people like you more?

a man can’t be too careful in the choice of his enemies. Oscar Wilde

the habit for apologizing for your boundaries. Someone who is pushing your limits is the one who is being rude. You don’t say, “I’m sorry” before saying you aren’t interested in that drink he has badgered you to take for the fourth time. In close relationships, think about ways you are feeling overlooked, taken advantage of, or treated in an uncaring way. Identify times where you can say something like, “Honey, I know you like it when I pick up your clothes, but I don’t like doing it. I’d like you to put them in the bin yourself. I would feel much more cared for if you did that.” Or for a more serious example, “I’ve noticed that you don’t seem warm after we’ve been intimate and that hurts me. I’d like to talk about it with you.” Oftentimes there is a family member that just has no regard for your limits or personal space. Think about why it’s so hard with certain people to feel like you are being respected. Ask yourself what you are afraid will happen if you set a limit. Read books about family dynamics and communication. Try, “Mom, I know you like to call late at night because that’s a good time for you, but I won’t be able to answer after 9pm because I’m settling into bed at that time. If you want to talk, we’ll have to do it before then.” Remember to give yourself lots of time and lots of room for error. Finding a good coach, role model or therapist, and reading books on boundaries and assertiveness can help you navigate your new found assertiveness and can be very a helpful resource. Learning to care for yourself and value your own boundaries is often quite a journey. Often you need a guide. Sometimes you experience loss. You may move forward and then drift back. It is a process and a lifelong learning journey. And it can be hard, but it can also be exhilarating. It will definitely be worth it. Good luck! The Sins By sarah G. mason

You Shouldn’t Stop The bad habit – You reach for beer instead of red wine The surprising benefits – Though red wine is touted as the “healthy” alcohol for its abundance of antioxidants, it’s not the only drink with benefits. Beer, too, has been shown to decrease mental decline and strengthen bones over time. In addition, Harvard reports that occasional beer drinkers experience decreased risk of heart disease. The key is not to over-indulge – one 12-ounce beer per day is the recommended max; any more than that and liver damage, heart problems and calories start to take their toll..

The bad habit – You’re addicted to chocolate The surprising benefits – We all know that dark chocolate can lower your blood pressure and bad LDL cholesterol, but it’s also great for your overall well-being. Chemicals 14 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

in dark chocolate activate stress-reducing neurotransmitters in your brain, boosting your overall mood. Whether it’s this physiological reaction or simply the sweet satisfaction (or both), there’s no denying that a bit of dark chocolate (especially those made with at least 70 percent cocoa solids) can do you some good.

The bad habit – You skip your pre-workout stretch The surprising benefits — We’ve all been told how important it is to stretch, especially before a workout. However, if you’ve been following recent research, you may know that stretching isn’t necessarily helpful. In fact, it may be hurtful. Holding static stretching (like touching your toes for 30 seconds) does indeed stretch muscles, but instead of “loosening” them up in a good way, it makes them weaker and more prone

Feel guilty every time you reach for that chocolate, skip breakfast or skimp on exercise? doing "wrong” may actually benefit your health and happiness. to injury. Instead, it’s better to warm up with dynamic stretching (those that involve movement) or to not stretch at all.

The bad habit – You can’t spit out the bubble gum The surprising benefits – If you imagine your grandmother shaking her head every time you pop a piece of Double Bubble into your mouth, rest at ease. Chewing gum contributes to oral health (your mouth produces excess saliva which washes away germs), contributes to weight loss (by preventing mindless snacking) and reduces stress and tension (think of it as a stress ball for your mouth). Just be sure to chew in moderation!

The bad habit – You skip breakfast before your morning workout The surprising benefits – Belgian researchers discovered that when people consumed a high-fat, high-calorie diet for six weeks, those who exercised before eating didn’t gain weight. In addition, Scottish researchers found that pre-workout breakfast skippers burned 33 percent more calories than those who ate first. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should skip breakfast all together. When you get home, refuel with an omelette or a filling protein shake.

Travel Tips The best Thanksgiving travel days The best time of day to fly

Holiday travels are fun – except for the traveling part. Read our tips to make your end-of-the-year flights merry! 12 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

Thanksgiving Day is the best outbound day – you’ll often find cut-rate airfare deals, and getting through the airport on Thanksgiving is a breeze. On your return, it’s best to book an early Friday flight, if you can.

The best Christmas travel days This year, Christmas falls on a Thursday, so travel will likely be spread out over the course of the week. Similarly, New Year’s Eve is on a Wednesday, so holiday travels will have no obvious peak days. This is great news – book whenever you want!

The best time to book Now! Historically, flights are cheapest between 40 and 60 days before the travel day. Book early to get the cheapest rates.

Early! During peak travel times (read: midday), you’ll face a lot of trouble fighting traffic on the way to the airport, finding a parking spot in packed lots, making it through the security line and then catching a full shuttle to your terminal. Rather than trying to arrive hours early, it’s better to leave the airport on an a.m. flight.

The best grace period between connections This will depend on the size of the airport your flight connects in, but at the very minimum, give yourself one hour to catch a connection. During the holidays, winter storms and crowded flights cause more delays than usual – avoid tight connections to prevent a missed flight. Logic is in the eye of the logician. Gloria Steinem

House of Cards Star

Joanna

Going Discusses New Role in Kingdom

Interview by Lauren Douglass Photo by Benjo Arwas 10 Flourish Magazine | November/2014

It is dangerous to be sincere unless you are also stupid. George Bernard Shaw

Beautiful Joanna Going last greeted audiences as the resolute First Lady Patricia Walker in the netflix emmy award winning drama, House of Cards. now, the seasoned actress shares about her starring role in dIReCTV’s first scripted drama, Kingdom, her time on House of Cards, and how being a single mom changed her career – for the better! Kingdom seems like a pretty intense schedule together with each different project because I never know exactly what show. What was filming like? Definitely intense! This is a pretty gritty world – a subculture of mixed martial arts set in the gritty inner city of Venice, CA. This is the Venice that tourist who are interested in bikinis and palm trees and beach volleyball don’t see. So just being on set, we felt this very authentic atmosphere.

Can you tell me a little about your character and how you prepared for it? My character is Christina Kulina. She’s the estranged wife of Alvey Henderson, the owner and coach at the mixed martial arts gym studio. They got together very young and lived a pretty high life while he was a champion fighter. They have two sons, Nate and Jay. Christina has a lot of issues: emotional issues, and most importantly drug issues – she’s a heroin addict. She has come and gone throughout the boys’ lives, in part because of conflict with Alvey, but also to protect them from herself. When we first meet her she’s not in a pretty place.

How do you avoid losing yourself in a character? Mostly because I can’t. I’m a mom, so every minute my brain is working on two tracks. I think when you’re young, you can afford to get lost in the character and really live in it, but later you have other responsibilities. I eventually learned that I can still be committed in every scene and not completely lose my mind! I think that comes with a security of getting to a certain age and experience. I certainly felt more relaxed than I ever have on this project. I felt very confident in it even though I was having to delve into pretty dark areas.

How do you balance you time as a mother and an actress but still take time for yourself? Time for myself is at the bottom of the list. I’m a single mom with two dogs and house to take care of, too. I kind of have to piece a new

my next day is going to bring. Thankfully, I have a great support group of friends that I rely on and that I’m so grateful my daughter is comfortable around. Besides, she’s at an age now where she wants to spend her time her way.

How do you help yourself maintain a positive outlook, when your day job is so intense? I think once you have a home life, you’re simply not able to sink into the “poor me” attitude anymore. You have to get up and make the lunch, get the kids off to school, run the errands and get everything done! Before I could afford to be a lot more introspective and get kind of down and wallow, but then once I had a child and had these responsibilities, it actually pulled my spirits up. I’m also the oldest of six kids, so being a caregiver kind of keeps me going!

Tell me a little bit about Nick Jonas. We know him as a singer, but how is he as an actor? He’s so talented as an actor. People think he’s a singer turning actor, but really he’s been acting since he was a kid, on Broadway and in movies. This show definitely brings out a new side of him, though, and he brings this totally unexpected depth and gravitas to the role. I’m the mother of a girl, but I have four younger brothers, and when I first met both Nick and Jonathan Tucker it was like oh yea, these guys can be my family!

What was is the set like on House of Cards Cards?

It is so grown up on that set! Complete antithesis of the set of Kingdom. You’re walking around these incredible hallowed halls and high ceilings, and with all the grand mosaics, art and carpeting it just feels like you’re in an important place. Everyone on set is very put-together and well behaved, and yet all the while there’s this undercurrent of roiling stuff going on. It’s all so adult, so fun, and so respectful. I was just honored to find myself there.

So with as much experience as you’ve had, do you still get nervous about meeting a new cast or the start of filming? Oh absolutely! Now with auditions, you have to actually put yourself on tape – just get your friends and your phone and do the scene right there in your living room, filming it yourself! It’s awesome, and it’s a nightmare! With House of Cards, I had watched the first season and was already a huge fan, but I didn’t even meet the casting people before I showed up on set. It was quite intimidating to just walk into a table-read with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright and all these amazing people and amazing producers, but once we started everyone was super welcoming. It’s also a different situation when you’re a guest. You’re a train moving down the track and they’re a family. You don’t know what they expect from your character, and you don’t know where thing are going (especially with House of Cards, where everything’s under tight wraps!). When you’re involved from the onset like I have been with Kingdom, then you feel this is your home, and you feel a lot more comfortable. And hopefully, when you have guest actors come in you remember what that’s like, and welcome them into the family! Flourish Magazine | November/2014 11

Traditional Chinese medicine uses “cupping,” a technique designed to balance the body’s energy channels, in a very modest way and only for certain types of illness. The theory behind the practice is different than in Western medicine, too, and its results are astonishing.

Cupping A Treatment to Improve Circulation and Balance Health By Dr. Han, Natural Rhythm Acupuncture

When people hear the term “bloodletting” nowadays, images of ancient Greek iatros or 19th century doctors might come to mind. But not all bloodletting is created equal! How it works The goal of cupping is to remove static blood, which is considered a pathological factor that causes inflammation in the body. The static cells are extravasated, meaning they are not useful to the body anymore. Usually, the body will clear and absorb the static blood itself, but when the body doesn’t have enough energy or the stagnation gets to be too much, harmful blockages and buildups can occur and stand in the way of healing. That’s where cupping can be a great help. With static blood removed, blood circulation can be restored and the body will start to heal. TCM practitioners use cupping to treat various conditions involving pain and inflammation, including but not limited to: • Sciatica • Knee pain • Frozen shoulder • Headache • Shingles • Heat stroke

• Back pain • Baker’s cyst • Neck pain • Sprained ankle • Arthritis • Metabolic Syndrome

The TCM method TCM practitioners will diagnose a patient’s condition and decide where to do the cupping, then use the lancet to prick five to 10 times on the area. The lancet used is the same as diabetes patients use to take their blood. The cuts from lancet-pricking are so small that they close up right after the treatment. After pricking, TCM practitioners apply a suction cup to draw out the static blood. The whole process takes no more than 20 minutes with less than one ounce of blood drawn, but the effects are usually immediate. You’ll see visible evidence of the stagnant buildup when the static blood comes out. It will coagulate, or become dark and sticky, much faster than normal blood, which advertisement

emerges fresh red and can be absorbed by paper towels completely. Once the static cells are removed your body can begin to heal itself properly.

Safe, effective and natural TCM cupping never involves cutting the veins or massive blood loss (always less than a single ounce), and the practice continues to garner support in the medical field. A study published in 2012 in the journal BMC Medicine even suggested that cupping might offer cardiovascular benefits to obese people with metabolic syndrome. Versions of cupping were practiced by Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Greeks, Native Americans and the Chinese. From a practical point of view, something that thrived for thousands of years among different cultures around the world must be useful, and worthy of further exploration. Today, cupping provides a safe, effective and natural way for restoring health to your body’s blood circulation.

How to know if you need treatment TCM practitioners usually look at the bottom of the tongue to find out if a patient has static blood. There are two veins under the tongue which should normally appear unobtrusive and light in color. People with static blood will present two thick and dark veins, and sometimes scattered dark dots under the tongue.

“After western doctors tried and failed to treat the hard swelling in my left leg, my brother recommended I go see Dr. Han. When he introduced cupping into my treatment, I was skeptical, but once I saw what came out of my leg I wanted to do it again and again. Now my body is back in balance, and I can’t stop talking about it!” Testimonial from Keith Pace of Gainesville, FL.

In eVeRYTHInG,

Turkey day means more than watching football with the fam and digging into a fabulous feast. Yet, as an elementary school teacher, I’ve noticed that many of my students cannot tell me the real reason why Thanksgiving is celebrated! When I ask them what they did over their holiday break, they say that they ate, watched T.V., and went shopping. With so much to be thankful for in our lives, why not get back to the heart of the matter and truly give thanks with your family this Thanksgiving?

Give Thanks Here are several activities to help you and your loved ones embrace the spirit of the season by showing off your gratitude for all the blessings in your lives, including one another!

Dish out Positive Plates Prior to your dinner, think about each guest that will be seated and your table. Make a list of what you are most thankful for about each person. On a festive slip of paper, write down your thoughts and slide it under their plate. Once everyone is seated, instruct your guests to look under their plate and read what you wrote. Leave it at that, or, if you're with a vocal bunch, ask your guests to share similar thoughts with those gathered around the table. Everyone will get that warm and fuzzy feeling (this time before the turkey sets in) and remember why you are all gathered around the dinner table enjoying a feast together. 6

Flourish Magazine | November/2014

Make a Charitable Donation

Before your guests arrive, research several charities based on your loved ones' unique interests and beliefs. Give some information about each and ask your family and friends to vote on one before Thanksgiving Day so you can all make a donation. After dinner, pass around a collection envelope and give everyone the chance to reflect, aloud or to themselves, on how thankful they are for their health and life in light of all those still living in need. You can enjoy your family's festivities knowing that you have all done a good deed!

Have a Selfless Morning Instead of lounging and nibbling on holiday goodies in the morning, make good use of your time together. Travel as a family to a nearby homeless shelter and volunteer your

time serving those in need. If your Thanksgiving begins around lunch time, consider pushing it back a few hours to give yourselves plenty of time. The facility will appreciate the help, and will also accept donations if you’d rather travel there as a family and make one. Spending time with those less fortunate will instantly be put into perspective for your children, who sometimes need to see the difficult things in life to appreciate the simple necessities that they sometimes take for granted: Plenty of food, clothes, and a roof over their head!

These ideas are simple, easy to do, and don’t involve a lot of time, but they can help you teach your children how to count their blessings, and set your friends and family in mind to give thanks not only Thanksgiving, but every day of the year.
