Wicked Wiffleball Throwdown Wicked Ball Bustahs Clinch It in Extra Innings
Special Report by Nicole Short Although the Miles Marauders (led by team captain Rich Tabbut) put up a great fight, they were no match for the Wicked Ball Bustahs (led by team captain T.R. Ramsdell). Both teams were nearly neck-in-neck through the first 4 innings. The bottom of the fifth produced 3 runs for the Marauders, putting them in the lead by 3. They held off their lead until the top of the 7th when the Ball Bustahs put up 3 back-toback runs forcing the game into extra innings. The Ball Bustahs scored one run in the top of the 8th inning, but the Marauders just couldn’t get the extra run in. The Wicked Ball Bustahs won the game with a final score of 12 to 11. Both the Marauders and Ball Bustahs suffered a major setback when the game was put on a 1-week rain delay. Both teams lost half of their players due to the schedule change and were left scrambling to fill their lineups. A Special thanks to everyone who stepped up at the last minute and those who were original team members who made it back a week later. We’re looking forward to next year and a potential rematch! Play Ball! The Wicked Ball Bustahs

Co-Presidential Perspective Shari Hewson and Alison Phelan
Mocha and Vanilla . . . . hmmm, ice cream flavors you may ask? Yes, they are ice cream flavors but are also the new nicknames of your Co-Presidents. We are sure the next question is where these nicknames came from. Well, one look at our legs in the picture of us crossing the finish line at Pinelands (below) will provide the answer. Shari’s very white legs next to Alison’s tanned legs and voila – Mocha and Vanilla! At least these are flavors that complement each other very much like the way our personalities and talents complement each other. The same can also be said when thinking about our Club and the members. We have members of all ages, talents and abilities. Interests and distances vary and yet we complement each other. Some do well with fundraising and others do well supporting the fundraisers. Some are strong in thinking of ideas and plans and others do well implementing these ideas and plans. This month’s Runner’s World profiles several runners who are cancer survivors. What an inspiration! These people have had difficult journeys and are now using their running abilities to support and raise money for cancer research. Another example of where an ability and talent complements a need. Thinking about the races in which we are involved and the activities of the club brings to our attention how our members complement the needs of the club. This is crucial to the well being and future of the club. Keep up the good work Wicked Nation and as always, let us know of any ideas or suggestions you may have.
Get to Know Your Board: Stephanie Hagyard Board Position: Member-at-Large (plus volunteer coordinator) Occupation: Post Closing Specialist at Salem Five Mortgage Co. Years in WRC: 1 year 7 months ... since Nov. 2009. I think I counted it right :-) Favorite WRC moment: At the finish line of Mill Cities Relay back in Dec 2010 waiting for Kate Crowley to finish her leg and seeing all the wicked members out there to cheer her on. Such a great example of all the races that Wicked does this at. (That, along with anything Kyle Hewson says). Runner’s High: Finishing my first 1/2 marathon- and what I said to some fellow members cheering me on at the finish line — and that it was not quite kid friendly. :-) Darn sweatshirt! Post-run snack: Gatorade and a banana (But keep meaning to get chocolate milk because I hear great things about it). Favorite movie: Tough one- St. Elmo’s Fire. Guilty pleasure: Wine :-)

Race Reviews Pinelands 50K, Pinelands Farms Trail Races Alison Phelan, Co-President
Memorial Day Weekend – May 2829, 2011 • New Gloucester, Maine Background: In December, when both “co-president elects” were having a glass of wine and discussing next year’s running goals, Shari Hewson suggested running a 50k at Pinelands. At the time, it seemed like May was still a long time away and so we decided why not give it a try since there seemed to be plenty of time to prepare for that race. But as you may recall, it was a tough winter to train for anything. I was training for Boston and Shari was training for the Disney Marathon. Shari ran the Disney and a few other half marathons, including a trail half marathon in April and the GAC Mother’s Day Run in preparation for the Pinelands 50k. I ran the Boston Marathon, the GAC Mother’s Day Run and mainly ran some long runs in May as part of my training. But I still had my doubts whether I would actually run the 50k or drop down to another race. Memorial Day Weekend: Race weekend snuck up on both of us. May was just one of those months full of meetings, races and school events; Memorial Day
came quicker than we both thought. I finally decided just two days before the weekend to go through with the 50k, since I had agreed to running this race with Shari. Pinelands Farms hosts a series of races on both days: Saturday has a 5k, 10k and 15k; Sunday starts with the 50m, 50k followed by the 25k race. On Sunday morning, it was misting lightly when we left the hotel at 6:30am with Team Touchette – Elizabeth Touchette Sullivan, Deb and Steve. The weather forecast called for a humid day; we were just hoping that the sun wouldn’t come out too soon. The race began at 8am, and unfortunately, the sun popped out around 11am making it for a long and hot trek. The Course & Extras: The good news was that Pinelands was not as technical as Lynn Woods, the bad news is that it has areas where the course goes out onto some long, and hilly open grassy fields where there is no shade -- just lots of sun. We knew we’d have to pace ourselves because of our lack of training in the heat. Fortunately, the aid stations were phenomenal – offering us water, chips, candy, peanut butter sandwiches, potatoes and even some popsicles – which we thought tasted like caviar! The volunteers at the stations were our cheering squads motivating us on when
we needed it the most! The 50k course is outlined like a figure 8, so it takes Steve Touchette glides you back to to the finish. the starting area a couple times. My daughter, Kerry Phelan, joined us with just a 10k left in the race and tried to lift our spirits with her fresh outlook of the course. I knew Shari was tired because she instructed Kerry to talk since she was too tired to talk herself! The Finish: During the race, Shari and I had plenty of time to talk about everything or should I say I was talking and she was listening more at times. I do recall reminding her on who’s idea it was in the first place to run the Pinelands 50k. In the end, we found the strength to finish and to have a memorable photo finish smiling and raising our arms in triumphant (photo left). We had done it together – “Mocha and Vanilla” – quite the determined duo from the Wicked Running Club! Footnote: Team Touchette finished ahead of us, Dan Sullivan and Bill Mullen completed their 25k races and endurance supergal, Karen Giroux, completed another 50m in a PR. I don’t know if we’ll ever do another 50k, but we would still rate this race a 4 out of 5 cats!

Wicked Runners Take on the Patriot Half Ironman Denise Murphy and Patrick Smith
Saturday, June 18, 2011 Cathedral Camp, East Freetown, MA WRC members Patrick Smith, Tim Clarke and Denise Murphy traveled to East Freetown, MA along with 503 other athletes on Saturday, June 18th to race the Patriot Half Ironman at Camp Cathedral. A Half Ironman is a triathlon with distances of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike and a 13.1-mile run, with finishing times ranging from 4 to 8 hours.
Congrats to the WRC Half Ironmen: Denise Murphy (above in
orange), Patrick Smith (photo top, above) and Tim Clarke (photo top right, on right)!
The morning started off to be a perfect day for racing with cooler temperatures, lots of cloud covering and all three on the same bike rack for transitions (typically not the case). So far, so good. Water temperature in Long Pond was approximately 69-70 degrees which had Denise wishing that she opted to wear “the other wetsuit” she brought with her; the one with the full sleeves. The “rolling” bike course was a scenic two-loop course along country roads where you passed farms, cranberry bogs and the Poshka Pond Causeway with lake-size ponds (and fishermen) on both sides. All managed to dodge the fishing hooks. Patrick and Tim were probably cycling too fast to notice the llamas Denise spotted on the bike course. The clouds gave way to a brilliant blue sky and an unobstructed view for the sun to melt the runners on the one-loop hot-hot-top course as air temps hit 87. It was 13.1 miles of weaving from the right-side of the course to left side trying to find a tiny bit of shade for relief. Patrick swears he ran more than a half marathon by using this technique. Denise’s heat running strategy included lots of head icing as she utilized her visor as an ice tray to cope with the high temperatures. Kudos to the event organizers for having plenty of ice on the course. Tim was tough, took it straight and looked the sun straight in the burning gasses and told it to find someone else to bother. The final 2 miles were the toughest; wide open, sun-baked main road with a triple uphill to test your will. In the end there was nothing sweeter than running down the finisher’s chute with friends (thanks WRC Dan Cooper for support), food and entertainment waiting for you. Oh, and of course, some hardware! Race = 4 cats out of 5 Race temp/sun exposure conditions = 2 cats out of 5

Question of the Month: How do you cope with running in the heat? Nicole Short Member, WRC I don’t!
Shari Hewson Co-President and Member, WRC I try to run as early as possible and if necessary, run slower. Tim Short Webmaster and Member, WRC I’ll usually start runs early in the morning to make sure I don’t get caught running in hot weather. For long runs on Saturday mornings during the summer (depending on how many miles I’ll be running) I will start at 6:30AM. Usually this gives me enough time to run 8-10 miles and then I will pick up another 8-10 miles with other members from Wicked. Alison Phelan Co-President and Member, WRC Usually Kerry and I will run thru people’s lawns while their sprinklers are on in the early morning hours around 4:30AM. Yes, on hot days it can already be pretty hot by then! David Long Member, WRC Hydrate the day before or, if it isn’t a race day, take the day off.
Julie Arrison Member, WRC I try to hydrate excessively the day before a long run and always carry enough water with me and have quite a few fountains around Salem mapped out. I also try to get into the habit of running early in the morning when possible. Beth O’Grady Member, WRC It’s not the heat that bothers me as much as the direct sun, so I try to run early morning, later at night or anyplace with lots of shade. Regardless, when the air is thick and humid, always bring your inhaler if you have asthma like I do... better safe than sorry! Don Gallucci Member, WRC The best way I can cope with running in the heat is to avoid it as much as possible. I try to run in the early morning or later in the evening whenever I can, especially on those long runs. I also keep an eye on the long range weather reports and schedule my training runs around the hot or rainy days. It doesn’t always work out perfectly, but it helps. Mickel McClish Member, WRC I try to run earlier or later in the day than I normally would. If I can’t do that, I just suck it up and deal….with plenty of fluids.
Rich Tabbut Member-at-Large and Member, WRC I never really get used to racing in hot weather. I run without a shirt and pour water over my head before and during runs. Also, I run very early in the morning and later in the day. Kerry Phelan Member, WRC I cope with running in the heat by running really early with my mom. Especially since I have a job with The Food Project 5 days a week, I like to get my runs in early rather than after a long hot day in the sun. My mom and I can often be spotted with the Tuesday/Thursday crew at 5:30am or even running in Peabody as early as 4:30am! We also try to hit all sprinklers along our running route and end with a jump in our pool :). Shannon Downey Member, WRC I hate hot weather and really hate running in it! I just try to go as early as possible, sometimes I’m out by 5:00 am. Yikes, but it’s better than heat stroke!

Ask the Coach
Mike Toomey Answers Four Questions This Month
Billy Shea: I have recently been advised to change my long standing running style from landing on my heels to landing on the balls or toes of my feet. I have been told this is more efficient and less jarring on the body. Your thoughts? I’m always hesitant to change something that has been working for a long time. If it is something that interests you, a good way to try it out is to mix in easy 20 minute runs using the new style. We can all use some work on our form, but a major overhaul can be tough on the body. Stefanie A. Smith: Last winter I pulled my groin and still to this day I still feel a twinge of pain when I run, making running uncomfortable. What is your suggestion in getting that twinge to go away? That is an area where rest is so important. Once the area is ready to be worked again a strength plan may be in order. A good idea is to work with a PT that has a running background to get you back on track. If you need some names of people in the area, feel free to email me at mike@toomeysports.net. Cindy Johnson: I have a weak back due to scoliosis. As a child, they didn’t encourage me to participate in sports. I’ve now been running now for about 6 years and participating in races of all distances. I’ve discovered that as long as I can strengthen my core, I can run longer without encountering pain after mile 10. Are there any back strengthening exercises you recommend? Working with a trainer on this is probably the best idea because you should have someone there with you to make sure you are doing the exercises correctly. But, if you are comfortable at the gym already, here is a link to some pretty good core/back ideas. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120 ,s6-393-394--11878-2-1-2,00.html Kerry Phelan: With the summer heat rising, staying hydrated is extremely important. However, how much water is too much water and do you suggest runners choose drinks like Gatorade over water during runs? Prior to running, you should start drinking 5 to 8 glasses of water a day... Keep a water bottle with you while at work. The day of your run, drink sports drinks that contain electrolytes. Drink 6 to 8 ounces of water for every 20 minutes of running. If you drink too much during your run, you will feel nauseated. Eat a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, because these foods will help you keep hydrated. Finally, Monitor your urine. If it’s yellow, you are not taking in enough water.

Wicked Kudos From Tim Short: Congrats to Beth O’Grady for placing 3rd in the 50-59 age group at the 7th Annual 26x1 Mile Club Challenge Relay. T.R. says: A Wicked big thanks to everyone that came out and played in the second annual Wiffle Ball Throwdown. Especially to the members of The Wicked Ball Bustahs team for keeping my undefeated streak as captain going. Thank you also to Nicole Short for organizing everything. Congrats to Beth O’Grady for conquering her fear of wiffle ball, and not only pitched a few innings, but hit a single and a double in the game. From Stefanie A. Smith: I would like to thank Amber Woolfenden for motivating and running with me at my first NRFTW run. As a newbie it was hard to get out and run because I knew I was going to be left in the dust of the other runners’ strides … but Amber was great! She stayed with me and her gentle encouragement and spontaneous “you can do it” helped me finish. Thanks Amber for slowing your
stride and sticking it out with me. I’m excited to join such a great group of supportive runners! From Alison Phelan: Congratulations to our WRC members and friends who climbed Mount Washington last weekend. You all deserve a great big pat on the back! From Julie Arrison: Thanks to: Nicole Short for putting on an amazing Wicked Wiffleball Throwdown...even with the last minute changes. Mia Poppe Mountain for providing lots of treats for the No Rest for the Wicked Two Year Celebration Party. It was a great event and good to see old and new friends of the Thursday night running group. From Don Gallucci: Thanks to Sasha Sopic for keeping me going on the final hill during the Fathers Day 5K! Without his encouragement, I
Brant Henne and family at the Georgetown 5K race on 6/11/11
wouldn’t have beaten my personal best for that course. From Rich Tabbut: Congrats to Brant Henne for his second place standing in the Yukanrun. com series. From Mickel McClish: Kudos to everyone training for the Chicago Marathon!
THANK YOU WRC!
I’d like to personally thank WRC members, friends, and family who volunteered for the North Shore Cancer Run. You all made this event possible. I’m proud to be in such good company. —Michele Campbell Race Director

Seen and Heard on the Run Shari Hewson to Alison and Kerry Phelan during the 50k @Pinelands on Memorial Day: “Kerry, why don’t you talk for awhile because I’m too tired to talk! What? Shari Hewson too tired to talk...what is the world coming to?!” “I wear $40.00 lipstick to a wiffle ball tournament! I am NOT an outdoorsy kind of gal!” Shannon Downey’s response when asked if she was interested in running in Lynn Woods. “You lied to me!” Stacy Adams to Shari Hewson upon learning a woman had fallen off Mt. Washington after Shari told her it would not happen. Stephanie Hagyard when seeing Michele Campbell and Ann Sousa at the Salem Farmers Market: “Is there anything you two don’t do together?”
Seen on the Run: Don Gallucci
at the Fathers Day 5K, smiling and about to “high 5” his boys as he passed them at the starting line.
Beth O’Grady reports: In a developing news story on WBZ radio on Friday June 17, they were reporting that a suspicious backpack had been found in Arlington National Cemetery. When the broadcaster asked if the situation was contained or if it still presented a potential danger, the reporter said he believed it was no longer a threat as he saw a number of joggers in the area. Apparently, he doesn’t know how crazy ‘joggers’ can be. If if were the end of the world we’d still be trying to get a few more miles in :)

T.R.’s Take: Wicked Grand Prix Series Ok Wicked runners, time to lace up those shoes and get ready for our fourth race in the series. It’s the Jennifer Tinney Memorial 5 mile race in Boxford on Monday, July 4. The 5 miler takes off at 8 AM, but there is also a kids 1 miler, and a 2.5 walk, so no excuses for not getting out there. I’m still on the mend, but look forward to screaming my lungs out for all my Wicked buddies as you pass by. Teams, encourage your team mates to get to this race. Everyone that shows up gets 10 team points. The Fourth of July is always a busy weekend for everybody, but can you think of a better way to justify that extra burger you’ll have later that day? Next race will be the super sweaty Yankee Homecoming 10 miler in August. Always a good time! So until then, C’mon, who’s in?

Danvers Rail Trail Review by Julie Arrison
Wicked Good Suggestion from Tim Short
Mary Bruno and I set out for a nine mile jaunt
While going through coolrunning. com for a recent results post, I noticed that none of our members that ran listed that they belonged to a club. If a race asks for a club name please don’t forget to write in or choose Wicked Running Club! Many races have team results and in the past we have been able to pick up some well deserved hardware for our efforts! For USATF races please use club number 266. Also, if you have club clothing, be sure to wear it to races. Not only will this make it easier for photographers, like Gif Campbell (or anyone) to spot you, other runners love to see our logo as well! Editor’s note: Putting the WRC designation when racing helps me too! I often look at race results when creating photo credits, etc. I search for the club name.
on the Danvers Rail Trail, which has been getting a lot of positive press. We parked at the Hobart Street lot in Danvers, one of the turning points in the weekly D5K run. From there we travelled on loose gravel for about 2 miles and the path then switched to hard packed dirt, with the exception of mud in some areas. The trail provided lots of shade for the run and some great views of marsh lands and the Ipswich River at our turning point in Topsfield, along Route 97. The history geek in me loved seeing the stacks of old railroad ties and the occasional iron rail spike along the path. The few folks that we met along the trail were very friendly. The cons of the trail are a lack of water or restroom facilities, but that is to be expected with most runs through wooded areas, so plan accordingly. The website for the trail, www.danversrailtrail.org, provides information about parking, mileage, upcoming events, and updates on construction. Mary and I give the rail trail 4 cats out of 5 and she pointed out that for anyone looking to trail run, this would be a good introductory route.
