Presidential Perspective T.R. Ramsdell
Each month, I sit for quite awhile, and think about what my monthly column will be about. When I write my column about the Grand Prix series, it comes easy. My job is to report, encourage and rally you guys into running races and competing. This month, I want to rally and encourage you guys into getting involved more with something else. Our club. Yes, “our” club. It belongs to you and me. We make the decisions about what happens. Now, I’m not picking on anyone, or pointing fingers, but I wonder why it is that I see the same people on all the race committees, and all the same faces at all the races? Wicked has 300 plus members. I know the names of maybe half. Why? This is what I want to find out. It’s not for a lack of trying, I’ve just never had an occasion to meet some of you. You’re not hiding from me are you? Nah, I didn’t think so. Maybe you’re shy, or afraid to engage. Well, the point of this diatribe is to let you know that we’re here for you. Yes,
me and all the rest of your Wicked teammates are here for you, to run with, train with, share tips, or even just hang out. That’s the whole point of being on a team. And Wicked is a team. I’ve met some of the nicest, friendliest people on the planet since joining 4 years ago. Now, I’m not saying that everyone that joins will go out and run a marathon. It’s not a prerequisite. I’m just saying, give us a try. Show up at a group run. When I’m not on the shelf due to my newest injury, I can be found leading the circle of love at Forest River Park on Saturday mornings. It’s a great group that goes, and there is always someone to run with. Or you can try the NRFTW run on Thursday nights. Also a very awesome crew. There’s the Tues/Thurs morning bunch from Front Street, or the Tues slow run in the evening. The best way to get to know the rest of your teammates is to volunteer at a race, or get on a race committee. My point is, get out there and mingle! Whatever it takes to become more involved in our club. Yes, “our” club.
Shameless Fundraising Plug From Beth O’Grady: Please join us Saturday, April 27, 7:30pm-11:30pm at the K of C on Salem Common for the Annual Spring Dance to benefit the Stephen M. O’Grady Foundation. $20 donation at the door includes several door prizes, snacks & DJ. Tons of great raffles, a 50/50 worth a minimum of $1,000 and Red Sox tickets also! For information see www.stephenogrady.com or email bethogrady@yahoo.com. Over the past 14 years, we have awarded over $151,000 in scholarships and donations to local youth groups! Editor’s note: Definitely not shameless. Sounds fun!
Running Tips With Mike Toomey Now that we are entering racing season, a lot of people are starting to talk about “The Taper.” We have all heard of it, we all know we need it...but what exactly is the taper? There are three main parts to your taper…volume, frequency, and intensity. The proper taper will only have a reduction in volume, while keeping the intensity and frequency the same. Often times when you hear people complain about being flat during the taper it’s because they reduced two or all three of the above. When getting ready for the big race, approximately three weeks out, you should be thinking of cutting your mileage. Keep your running days and paces the same, just gradually decrease the mileage. For a marathon, sometimes this could simply be dropping the long run volume. If you have questions on the taper, please shoot us an email and we can help. You can reach us at mike@toomeysports. com. Good luck at the races!

Thank You Wicked Running Club! Rich Tabbut
Amber Woolfenden and I were awarded the 2013 WRC Boston Marathon Numbers. My sincere thanks go to the club and its members for giving me the opportunity to run in the greatest marathon in the world! Special thanks go to our members who volunteer at the mile 17 gel stop that made this possible. Prior to running on April 15th, I would like to share a few thoughts about what the Wicked Running Club means to me. I joined the WRC following being a member of the North Shore Striders for many years. My responsibilities for the NSS included serving as club officer, Grand Prix Coordinator, newsletter editor, and race volunteer. A few years ago I spotted Tim Short at the East Boston Savings Bank Race in Peabody working the WRC table. I asked him if it would be possible to join WRC and continue to be a member of the NSS. He assured me that it would be no problem. I had always loved running for NSS, but thought it might be time for a change after 25+ years. My first event for WRC was the Mill Cities Relay. T.R. Ramsdell welcomed me to the Masters Team. I had such a great experience that I have never looked back. What I find unique about Wicked is our extensive involvement in the local running community and helping those less fortunate than ourselves. Serving on the Wicked Scholarship Committee for two
years allowed me to get involved in assisting local high school runners pay for college. The Miles Over the Moon Race Committee allowed me to be involved in giving back to the Beverly High School Boys Cross Country Team (1977 alumni). We have so many individuals within our club that work together with charities to support worthy causes all over the local area. There are several organizations that I became involved with via volunteering at events for the Wicked Running Club. Working the finish line at the Wicked Kidz Race led to my joining MyTeam Triumph–Cape Cod (as relayed in my Oct. 2012 WRC newsletter article). I have participated in 3 events for this outstanding athletic organization, most recently the New Bedford Half Marathon. There are no words that can describe the joy I have seen in the eyes of those I have had the privilege of pushing in a racing chair at road races. My mother suffered from a serious lifelong medical condition called SturgeWeber Syndrome that prevented her
from participating in most activities that we generally take for granted. Her experiences made me realize how important it is to be actively involved with those with disabilities so they can participate in everything our world has to offer. Last year I joined Team Wicked Nation for the North Shore Cancer Run. Almost every family I know has someone who has battled cancer. My original intention was to run in memory of my mother-in-law Mary Rossiter Duffy who lost a long battle with ovarian cancer just before Christmas in 1995. My plans changed when my long-time running friend Gary Freedman told me that he was being treated for Multiple Myeloma and undergoing treatment. Thanks to Team Wicked Nation and many friends’ generosity I raised over $2,000 for the North Shore Medical Center! Even though Gary was undergoing chemo, he completed the Cancer Run and the Cancer Walk. Gary is continuing his fight with cancer. I hope to run for him again in 2013. Our club has made a big difference in many lives. We are much more than just a “running club.” I am honored to run for the Wicked Running Club at the 2013 Boston Marathon.

Editor’s note: Good luck Rich, Amber, and all Wickeds running Boston!

Wicked Grand Prix Series 2013 T.R. Ramsdell
One down and 7 to go. Well, all I can say is thank God that one’s over with. Wicked had a great turnout for the Olde Salem Greens 5K cross country race last month. Sixty-nine of you Wicked maniacs showed up to take on one of the most challenging races you’ll run this year. It was a little chilly, and a little hilly, but you guys did great. Wicked members received a ton of hardware, including sweeping every team category (would you expect less?) This was also the first race in the Salem Park and Rec series put on by our very own Tim Short (I love double dippin’). We take April off in the series, but pick things up in May at the Pipestave 5k trail race. This is a new race in the WGP series this year, so I don’t know what to expect. I’m just hoping to get through it without breaking my foot again like last year. Be sure and check out the series standings on the website, and find out which team you’re on. This year, Tennille suggested using car names, so I’m down with that. Don thought up some great car names for us to use, along with some nice pics conveniently lifted from the Internet. Be sure and harass your fellow teammates and get them to show up to races. Every person that shows up, gets 10 points towards your team total. Trophies are awarded at the Winter banquet for the top 3 teams. That’s it for this now gang. I’ll ramble on some more next month. Hope to see y’all out on the roads, or at a group run soon.
Wicked Kudos

Where in the World is Wicked? Winning! Angel Green got a little rambunctious at the Doyle’s Road Race in Jamaica Plain. She stole a medal from the Somerville Road Runners and started double fisting beer in laundry detergent containers. That smile says it all. The mad posse at Doyle’s included rebel rousers Julie Arrison, Shelby “#GoingForGold” Morrison and Val Mathews, among others. Good times!
Play Nice, People From Don Gallucci: After fellow Wicked Member Paul Goodwin (289) “edged me out” at the end of the Olde Salem Greens 5K, he told me about the plan he made with my son Kyle (forefront). “Our plan was to beat you, even if I had to elbow you out of the way to win!”
Semper Fi John Gordon, Kristen Miano and Anne Burk went to Quantico Virginia, to the Marine Corps 17.75k to earn a guaranteed spot in the Marine Corps Marathon in October. All three completed the 11.3 mile course which was very hilly, with 8.5 miles of off-road course and a 370ft climb. This was a very challenging course indeed. They all ran in their Wicked Gear to represent the club. Nice job!
