The 1st Annual Salem Run@Work Day which was held on September 16 at the Salem Common was a tremendous success with nearly 80 runners participating. Salem Park, Recreation and Community Services and the Wicked Running Club partnered together on this exciting new event in Salem. The goal of Run@Work Day, presented by the Road Runners Club of America, is to encourage adults to get 30-minutes of exercise each day, in accordance with the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, either before work, during lunch, or immediately following work. We also had some great sponsors: B&S Fitness, Extra Effort Fitness, Body & Soul, Old Colony Running Events, St. Jean’s Credit Union, Boston Sports Club, Salem YMCA, New England Running Company, Shetland Properties, Salemroadraces. com, North Shore Road Race Guide and Toomey Sports. Through the generous sponsorship donations to the 5k fun run, tech shirts and refreshments were free for all who signed up. Mayor Kimberley Driscoll also attended Salem Run@Work Day and talked about all the great running events and programs that the City has to offer. RRCA Runner Friendly Community car stickers were given out to all who attended to celebrate Salem receiving the RFC designation. Run at Work day was also celebrated in Boston. Wicked Running member, Melissa Jaynes (MJ), helped organize the 5k run and 3k walk for federal employees who work in the Tip O’Neill building. Ten employees, including MJ, hit the Charles in stride! If you didn’t get a chance to participate in this year’s Salem Run@Work Day, don’t worry! We are already starting to think about the 2nd Annual Salem Run@Work Day. Save the date – September 21, 2012!

Race Review Lake Winnipesauke Relay Leeanne Nagle
Saturday, September 10, 2011 The sun began to warm the cool September morning as runners – some tired, some excited, some both - gathered in the parking lot at Fun Spot in Weirs Beach, NH. As a new runner with only a handful of races under my belt, I knew this race, The Fred Brown Lake Winnipesauke Relay, was going to be something special. Runners from all over New England, as evidenced by their yellow, green, orange, blue and red racing club shirts, smiled with eager anticipation as they greeted teammates and competitors alike. With temperatures warming into the low 70s and race time nearing, runners broke off into groups of eight in order to map out transportation and support plans for their teams. Soon enough 76 teams, including three Wicked teams, would be off and running the 65.1 mile/7-town relay around Lake Winnipesauke. To give you a little history, the Lake Winnipesauke Relay came into existence as the result of another race’s end. From 1974 to 1988 Fred Brown organized the Plymouth Rock to Provincetown Relay on the Cape. Unhappy with runners relieving themselves on neighborhood lawns, the Barnstable Police Chief abruptly ended the race in 1988. The following year the relay was moved to Lake Winnipesauke, where it has continued to grow in size and fame ever since. Back to the race…The relay started at 8:00 a.m. The first leg of the relay navigated through the Weirs Beach Boardwalk and offered scenic views of
Weirs Bay before presenting the runners with some decent hill work. John Paul Bosse was all smiles as he braved this 10.7 mile leg for our team, The Wicked Rebels. Water stops were limited, so team support for the runners was key. As John Paul ran his leg, Tim Short, Mary Bruno and I drove the course, stopping every several miles to provide encouragement, fuel and in the case of Tim, lies (“It’s all downhill from here!”). As we provided support to John Paul, our team captain, Doug Bollen, drove Beth O’Grady to the start of the second leg. This relay, among other things, proved to be a crash course in logistics. As Beth embarked upon leg two from the Gunstock Ski area, Mary and I drove Tim to the start of leg three. The longest of the eight legs, leg two spanned 11 miles from start-to-finish and offered some of the relay’s best views of the lake. Beth faced a challenging uphill start, but her hard-work was rewarded with a gentle downward grade into the baton exchange area at Alton Bay, where Tim awaited her hand-off. Leg three…If I were to sum up leg three of the Lake Winnipesauke Relay in one word, it would be: ridiculous. To put that word into context, if someone were to ask me to run the initial hill of leg three, I would assume they were drunk, mentally ill or both. Needless to say, Tim Short ran this leg for The Wicked Rebels. This 9.3 mile leg started with a three-quarter mile, 11 percent climb up Bay Hill Road! Think steep, very

steep. The rest of the leg was a steady, but gradual incline to the Kingswood Regional High School. Not surprisingly, Tim kept a swift pace throughout the entirety of this very challenging leg. Picking up where Tim left off, Mary Bruno mastered leg four for the Wicked Rebels. Described as a short and fast leg, leg four took Mary through the town of Wolfeboro. As required by race rules, Mary – despite her rebellious nature made sure to run on the sidewalks as she passed through the downtown area of Wolfeboro. Mary finished this relatively flat four mile leg at the Abenaki Ski Area, where she passed the baton onto the recently engaged (congrats!) Karra Cheever. After attending a wedding and accumulating no more than a few hours sleep the night before, Karra – no worse for wear - took charge of leg five. Measured at 10.8 miles, leg five passed through the mostly wooded countryside of Wolfeboro and Tuftonboro. Making quick work of leg five, Karra finished

at Morgan Farm, where she passed the baton onto me. Leg six of the Lake Winnipesauke Relay is described as a fast 6.4 miles with pleasantly rolling hills. To get to the start of leg six one must take a shuttle from the start of leg five to Morgan Farm. It was a little after 2:00 p.m. when I started upon leg six. The course started out flat but quickly presented me with a somewhat challenging uphill climb. After the initial climb, the course was, as described, pleasantly rolling. Since teams were spread out by this point, I did most of my running alone. The solitude of my leg was nice and gave me time to take in the scenery, which consisted of country neighborhoods and farmland. Without milemarkers or a Garmin, I was unsure of my exact pace. Mary and Tim met me at about the 5.4 mile mark and to my surprise, informed me that I only had one mile left. Kicking it into high gear, I increased my speed with hopes of catching up to the first place Wicked team. Unfortunately, my adrenaline got

the best of me and I failed to notice a large rock in my path. I tripped and face-planted onto the pavement. After a quick tooth count, I finished the last downhill portion of my leg and handed the baton off to Mike Smith who was waiting at the Moultonboro School. Mike Smith commandeered leg seven for The Wicked Rebels. If you do not know Mike Smith, he is fast, very fast. He all but sprinted the hilly 8.5 miles that comprised leg seven. Mike’s fiancée, Karra, John Paul and I provided support on his leg and it was all we could do to keep up with him – even in a car. Mike finished leg seven at the Interlakes School in Meredith, where he passed the baton off to Kristy Cheever. As the leg eight runner, Kristy was responsible for the final 4.4 miles of the 64.1 mile relay race. Leg eight held some of the best views of the relay and those views, as Kristy can attest, are well deserved. Leg eight took Kristy briefly downhill through the center of

Meredith before hitting what would be two of the more challenging (and long) hills of the entire relay. Kristy charged up the last quarter mile hill to a cheering crowd. The Wicked Rebels clocked in at a respectable 8 hours, 32 minutes and 42 seconds – 24th place overall. I enjoyed this race immensely. Spending 10 hours with other Wicked Club members builds a definite sense of camaraderie. The Lake Winnipesauke Relay gave me the opportunity to meet members that I had yet to meet and learn more about the members I already knew. As part of an eight person relay team, I felt like I was part of something bigger – and I was. There is a reason why runners and teams come to this race year after year – fun, excitement and pride fill the air. The pure exhilaration of the relay is matched only by the views of the lake and mountains. I encourage every Wicked member to run this relay next year – so mark your calendars now. I plan to make a weekend out of the trip next year and word on the street is that Mary Bruno is bringing a boat! I give this race a five out of five cats.

There’s a new fall half
Shari Hewson and Alison Phelan
September leaves are dropping from the trees and with that we know that fall is upon us. It’s the time of the year when we can look back and re-evaluate the year. With just a few months to go, this year has been especially memorable. Just glancing at the most recent Grand Prix Results, it Dave Long, Louis Chinappi, Shari Hewson, seems that there have been Don Gallucci and Rick Marciano (l to r). more members involved with the series this year. The camaraderie at these events has been tremendous – especially the relays where “individual” team pride plays a huge role. But beyond that, members really seem to enjoy running these Club events – cheering each other on, high-fiving one another – we are a dominating presence with the “sea of red” showcasing our Wicked Club colors! Seriously, though, we are especially grateful for that one member who can’t run this year, but still shows up to all the Grand Prix races and cheers each person on just when you think you can’t go any faster. Yes, T.R. Ramsdell – we hear you loud and clear – be sure that just because we’re not smiling on the outside doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate you. There are also other members creating ways of getting the WRC recognized throughout the community and beyond. Take for instance, our former President, Tim Short “with a little help from his friends,” who has placed WRC on the map with submittals of information to the RRCA which have resulted in two awards: the 2010 RRCA Outstanding Website for a Large Club and most recently the RRCA Runner Friendly Community designation for the City of Salem. Congratulations, Tim, for taking the time to enter the WRC in these competitions – you have taken the club to new heights. As the leaves turn color and the air gets crisper, there are many welcoming the change in the air and gearing up for fall races. Remember there are many organized runs and many friends ready and willing to train with you! Melissa J. Jaynes, Alison Phelan, Cait Gaglione, Amber Good luck to all! Woolfenden and Susan Keezer (l to r).

Wicked Grand Prix Series Update T.R. Ramsdell
Another month has passed in our race series, and what a month it was. Starting things off was the Run the Goose 7K, and the Race Around Cape Ann 25K, both of which took place on Monday, Labor Day. We had a fantastic showing by Wicked members in both races. I counted 23 Red runners flying by me as you approached the finish line. And although it was a little warm out there, and there was some misdirection during the 7K, you guys persevered and represented. Kudos to all of you. Also in Gloucester, we had The Lone Gull 10K. This race has always been a huge draw for Wicked runners, and this year didn’t disappoint. You guys looked great out there as you streamed by my position near the finish. Awesome job gang! This is one of the prettiest races around, with spectacular views of the ocean as you meander along the 6.2 mile course. Sadly, after 5 great years with Wes (from NERC) at the helm, the race has come to an end. Wes has given it up to spend more time with his family, so we cant fault a guy for that. Good luck to Wes! Our next race in the series, number 9, is The Fall Frolic 5K and Fun run (I usually say it correctly about one out of 10 times). Saying the name is the hardest part of this run. It traces the Homecoming route, and if you’ve Say hello to new ever run that (and who hasn’t), you know that it is a very Wicked member fast course. Fast equals PR gang, and who doesn’t like to Candice who ran re-set their PR from time to time? And did I mention that our very own Wicked Co-Prez, Shari Hewson, is the race the Lone Gull with a smile on her face! director? And did I further mention that Mike Page of North Shore Timing, will be testing out his new “B-tag” chip timing equipment for this race? I love “chipped” races. All this fun takes place on Sunday, Oct 16 @ 9:30AM. Check out the website for more info. Again folks, I want to ask you to please wear your Wicked gear when you’re racing. I’m actually making my racing “come-back” at this race, but I promise that after I finish, I’ll come back out to cheer in any one that might be behind me. But I cant cheer for you if I cant see you. So wear your Wicked jerseys! As always I ask you, C’mon, who’s in?

Question of the Month: What is your favorite thing about fall running? Melissa Jaynes Treasurer and Member I love fall running! The crispness to the air brings a lightness to my feet and changes places where you run everyday into completely different courses. Tim Short Webmaster and Member Nothing better than a Saturday morning group run with the Wicked Running Club during the fall! Running on the trail and hearing the leaves crunch with each footstep is a great sound! Shari Hewson Co-President and Member I like the change in air quality — cooler, crisper air makes for more comfortable runs!
Beth O’Grady Member Not sweating my dupa off. One fall warning, while foliage is gorgeous, falling leaves can hide potholes and other road and trail hazards so watch your step! Shannon Downey Member The weather!!! Goodbye, humidity! Hello, PRs!!!!
Micki Shinnick Member I love running in the fall. The cool air is great and I love crunching the leaves as I run.
Jacqueline Washburn is running the NYC Marathon for a good cause. With the fall comes marathon season and I am planning to bite the Big Apple for my first. When I qualified last fall I knew I wouldn’t do it unless I had a reason to run, so I decided to run for the Plummer Home. The Plummer Home is one of those small charities that do a lot, but aren’t typically able to obtain a bib for a big race. I have been training for much of the summer and it has been by far the toughest thing I have ever done. I have thought of giving up many times but when I do I try to think of the boys at the Plummer Home who face even tougher challenges everyday. Included below is a link to my website where you can make a contribution to the Plummer Home. www.razoo.com/story/Washburn For every $25 you contribute, your name will be registered to win a chance for a weekend stay at Good Harbor Beach. Below is a picture of the 4 bedroom house. — Jacqueline Washburn
Miles Fartlek WRC Mascot I think fall is my favorite time of year to run. I have a hard time waking from my cat naps but love the cooler air and chasing leaves along the way. Sometimes I even find some left over wild catnip in people’s yards and take a little nap in their shrubs and finish the run later!
Stephanie Hagyard Member at Large and Member The cooler temps!

Fun SHOTS! Wicked Caught on Camera
Years in WRC: Joined in Jan. 2008 right after I ran the first Frosty Four that Wicked put on, so I have been with the Club almost 4 years! Favorite WRC Moment: This year at the Newburyport 10 miler in August (my 3rd Alison (center) with daughters Natty (left) one). My daughter, Kerry, also a member, and I trained and Kerry. and ran this race together; it was great running with so many other Wicked members. This was her first 10m race, so we really enjoyed running under every water hose to get wet, paced each other and ran as hard as we could when T.R. Ramsdell started screaming at us at the bottom of the last big hill. In the end, I just remember “high-fiving” Kerry and smiling at a “PR” by 5 min. I enjoyed every moment racing with her and the rest of the WRC members. Runners High: My 2009 “Keene State Road trip” with Billy Shea and the WRC Ambassadors Team Touchette (Deb, Steve and Liz Touchette). Dan Sullivan, Liz’s fiancé at the time, drove us to Keene, NH for the Clarence deMar Marathon. We had a rocky start (off TT’s schedule time of departure), drove over a curb on a rotary a couple of times, and then on race day, the weather was drizzly and cool. But for me, personally, it couldn’t have ended any better – the stars and the moon were all aligned perfectly for me. Coming down the last 2 miles of the marathon, I knew then I had met my goal. With tears in my eyes, I raised my arms in and ran thru the finish line in a qualifying Boston Marathon time – bettering my previous best marathon time by 10 minutes. Whether I qualify for Boston ever again, I know the first one will always be the sweetest!
Karra Cheever and Michael Smith were recently engaged at the From the Clock to the Rock 5K road race in Lynn — the same race where they originally met. Congrats!
Don Gallucci saw this sign in beautiful Lovell, ME (population – 1,000). The Wicked name is spreading!
Post Run Snack: On the weekends after our long runs, Kerry and I started to buy the ½ gallon Chocolate Moo milks. We love to split the chocolate milk between us with some yummy breakfast. Favorite Movie: The Quiet Man a great movie that our family loves to watch every year on St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a classic – set in the 1950s and filmed in Ireland – lots of Irish humor and a little drinking also are shown. Guilty Pleasure: Warm cider donuts and fresh baked apple pie a la mode – fall is all about comfort foods and these are two of my favorites, especially now.
Brant Henne takes the podium at the YuKan Run 25K in Essex for winning 1st place in his age group.

Wicked Kudos Kudos to Michele and Gif Campbell, and Tim and Nicole Short who made it amongst the photos of movers and shakers in the fundraising community in the North Shore Medical Center annual report. Now that we are getting up in the world, perhaps we need a Wicked formal wear line? Congrats to Mike McKie who went to Quebec to run the Quebec City Marathon — unfortunately, the full was canceled at the last moment due to Hurricane Irene but runners were allowed to complete a half instead. Mike ran that in 1h 35m, pace 7:15 ... at times with a 35mph headwind! It wasn’t what he went there for but he said he still had a great time...in a beautiful city. Nice job Mike! From Tim Short: Thank you to everyone who ran the Lake Winni Relay back on September 10! I had a blast hanging out with everyone. Good job Coach Bollen on putting together a great team!
From Melissa Jaynes: Thanks to Dawn Cobak, Jim Maher, and Jackie Washburn for being my support crew for my long training run. You guys rock! Special shout out to Front St. runner Tim Clarke. Thanks for being my “rabbit” during Lone Gull. My turn next time:) See you on the AM runs! Thanks to Michele Campbell for letting me talk her into a few hills during the 25k in Essex and Brant Henne for not bearing a grudge or even a frown when I led us astray. Great running with you both! From Marie Duignan: A huge congratulations to Julie Arrison and Mary Bruno for their last ‘long run’ 21 miler on Sunday pre-Chicago Marathon. They rocked it all the way up to Rockport and didn’t moan once when the return transportation issues caused us a few headaches. They’re definitely going to be wicked awesome in Chicago in October.
From Jay Carraro: Wicked kudos to Tim Short and Doug Bollen for all the time and effort put in to win Salem the runner friendly community designation.
From Shannon Downey: Thank you to Melissa Jaynes for helping me to pass the woman at the end of Lone Gull and for supporting me in my PR. Thanks also to all the other Wicked members who were cheering me at the finish, that’s what makes Wicked so special. And a special shout out to Michele Campbell for giving me the best photo of the year - the look on her face is priceless :-)
From Miles Fartlek: Thanks to all the Wicked runners for transporting me from place to place since the loss of my license (and for not asking questions about the incident). I had a great time at Lone Gull---more bacon please!
From Doug Bollen: Thanks to Tim Short for all his work on the successful Salem Run @ Work Day. Thanks to Michele Campbell for volunteering at this event. Congratulations to Mike Smith and Karra Cheever on their recent engagement.
From Shari Hewson: Thank you Denise Murphy for pushing me in the Lone Gull race!
From Beth O’Grady: Thank you to Billy Shea for a badly needed pat on the back about a mile from the 5th and Final Lone Gull 10k finish line. It was enough to give me a race course PR, and my 2nd best 10k finish, just 5 seconds off my best 10k time. Never underestimate the power of an encouraging word to a fellow Wicked member! From Amber Woolfenden: Thanks to Billy Jackson and Greg Esbitt for marking the trails for me and Mary Bruno out at Willowdale last month! They were even nice enough wait for us and brought us iced coffees! From Stephanie Hagyard: Thanks to all who stuck around at Lone Gull and cheered me on! And to Michele Campbell for doing a little run with me. :-) Editor’s note: While it looks like I might have bribed people to put me all over the kudos this month, please know that no money changed hands!
Did you know? Originally, our first club race was going to be a night time race in the summer (possibly starting at Camp Naumkeag), before we finally decided to move it to New Year’s Day and name it the Wicked Frosty Four. WICKED FUN FACTS

LEFT: MJ in TX; I traveled to 5 states in the last month and while I enjoyed running in old neighborhoods in IN and in Central Park in NYC, I have to say I was left speechless in Austin, TX. It was 108 that week, so I got my run in at 5 AM “alone” and was amazed along the Town Lake path. There were TONS of runners (whose headlamps I originally thought were fireflies) and the city had set up water and gatoraide stations. What an awesome running community! — Melissa Jaynes RIGHT: I went to Scotland to take part in the Great Scottish Run 10k & Half Marathon in Glasgow. I did the half marathon with my Mum and Uncle, and 3 of my cousins did the 10k with friends. It’s been a family tradition since 2005, raising money for Cancer Research, in memory of my Dad and others close to us who have passed. Since then, we’ve raised well over $16,000 so it’s certainly worthwhile the trek from the USA now!
