Target Audience Experiences 1,2,and 3 are targeted at middle income families with children aged 6 to 16. Experience 4 is aimed at young professionals looking for a night out with a twist. Both groups can take advantage of the Interactive and educational experiences..

Tone of Voice The Logo and Branding have echoes of the past, with a nod to 19th century poster layout and Slab Serif typefaces. The bright coloured overprint used on print collateral and the Perspex signage adds a contemporary feel which will appeal to both target audiences.

CIR CUS CIRCUS CIRCUS Logo development Two aspects of Circus entertainment throughout the ages is movement and colour, whether it is the clowns, animals or acrobats. In an attempt to create ‘movement’ and also layering, I experimented with the overprint attribute in InDesign. I explored Typefaces commonly used on advertising posters during the 19th Century particularly Slab Serif typefaces such as Clarendon. I chose Memphis, a Slab Serif revival typeface designed by Rudolf Wolf in 1929, because the extra bold weight leant itself both to the overlay effect and also the cut out customisation. I chose Futura which was designed by Paul Renner in 1927 to accompany this typeface. Wolf’s conception for Memphis drew heavily from Futura, making them a good combination.

This is a Typography focussed competition brief so the main challenge was to avoid the logo being a pastiche of Circus past. The branding needed to appeal to a contemporary professional audience, both families and young people.

The Museum Concept A circular building such as The Corn Exchange In Leeds or The Round House in London would lend itself perfectly to this interactive Circus Experience. Experience 1, Jump on the Band Wagon will be an interactive ride back through the history of the Circus. From freak shows and menageries to the trapeze and clowns. The ‘Band Wagon’ experience will be an explosion of sounds and smells together with projections and stunning live performances from skilled Circus Artists and Clowns. Experience 2, Join the Parade, will offer the opportunity to join one of four skills workshops and then show off the newly learned skills in the Circus Parade, complete with costume and make-up. Experience 3, Circus Tales will be the Museum’s Collection that will include vintage costumes, posters and circus memorabilia. The museum will deal sensitively with Animal Rights issues and celebrate the human achievements of the contemporary Cirque Du Soleil. Experience 4, The Circus of Horrors will be an altogether darker experience allowing an adult only audience to explore the golden ere of vintage side shows. As darkness falls outside the whole building will be projected with vibrant coloured Circus, performances, words and shapes.

MUSEUM CONCEPT AND PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT

The Circus Museum is a contemporary interactive visitor experience. The Museum will offer an interactive ride, similar to The Jorvik Viking Centre, a journey though history of the circus.

Signage The Building Signage and wayfaring will have a modern, contemporary tone of voice. To fit with the ISTD brief the Signage is Typography based and does not use iconography. The letters and numbers will be laser cut from brightly coloured Perspex and back lit so that the colours offset

against each other. The bright colours will suit the more playful daytime experiences. In the evening the signs will be brightly lit and cast bright coloured shapes and shadows around, adding to the excitement and mystery of The Circus of Horrors.

Visitors Guide Provides a complete guide to the Museum Experiences and the building including a map of the Museum. The leaflet folds out into a poster. The layout is centred inspired by traditional 19th Century Posters.
